12:05 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Moin, been on holiday?
12:21 AM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> No, I was sick in bed.
12:21 AM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> cold, but feeling better now
12:37 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> morning
01:00 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Olli (RIO)@: Ah, sucky
01:01 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Hear this year's flu is the worst in over a decade, considering getting the vaccine
01:24 AM Deejay: moin
01:37 AM roycroft: next year's is going to be a lot worse
01:37 AM roycroft: in the us, that is
02:15 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Would imagine it's reasonably close to the same one, the viruses travel all around the world on airplanes every day
02:18 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Local clusters of mutations to some degree
02:40 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I had the 1989 flu, just thinking about it makes my stomach turn
04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
04:41 AM justache- is now known as justache
06:32 AM lcnc-relay: <CaptainHindsight@> 89 that was when the flu was the flu
09:19 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> moin
09:44 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I was in highschool in 89
09:51 AM roycroft: hi folks
09:52 AM roycroft: it's back to the grindstone day
09:52 AM xxcoder: monday fun
09:53 AM roycroft: my new client phoned last night with an emergency, so after my day job i'll be dealing with that situation
09:54 AM roycroft: but it's a local client, with a lot of local influence, so i want to take good care of her
10:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> nice!
10:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> well - sometimes emergencys are a pain..
10:18 AM roycroft: i'm looking to get local clients as soon as possible
10:18 AM roycroft: my boss has made me another offer
10:18 AM roycroft: we're losing our largest client at some point (it was supposed to be last march), and that will seriously impact revenue
10:18 AM roycroft: so when that client finally leaves, this is my boss' current offer:
10:19 AM roycroft: i stay on working full-time
10:19 AM roycroft: i get zero salary
10:19 AM roycroft: he will share profits with me 50-50
10:19 AM roycroft: profits are about 10% of my salary, so i'd be taking a 95% pay cut
10:20 AM roycroft: somehow he's having a hard time understanding why i did not jump at that offer
10:20 AM roycroft: oh
10:20 AM roycroft: and he said he'd pay me cash, under the table
10:20 AM roycroft: i guess that's how he thinks it makes sense
10:20 AM roycroft: because i would not have to report the income
10:21 AM roycroft: but if i took that deal i'd not only have zero tax liability, i'd be eligible for food stamps and medicaid
10:22 AM roycroft: also, i would have no say in managing the company
10:22 AM roycroft: so yeah, i'm looking to build a local client base :)
10:27 AM * roycroft is hoping that, now that the first shutdown of the current regime is over, his social security mess will get sorted and he'll finally start getting that revenue soon
10:27 AM xxcoder: I hope so, as my brother is in same position for over 2 years now
10:28 AM roycroft: my congressional rep's office was working on it and thought they were making progress when the shutdown happened
10:28 AM roycroft: my biggest concern is that the case worker who was trying to get it fixed may not be there any more
10:28 AM roycroft: that's what happened last time (in february)
10:29 AM roycroft: the case was open, they had everything almost ready to go, then doge came in and froze all their computer access
10:29 AM roycroft: the case worker was then coerced into taking early retirement
10:29 AM xxcoder: it took me nearly 2 years, from feb 2021 to feb 2023, to finally start
10:29 AM roycroft: and when the case was revisited, all my lifetime waged had disappeared
10:29 AM roycroft: wages
10:31 AM roycroft: anyway, if that gets sorted soon, when we lose the big client, i can be done with that job
10:31 AM roycroft: ss will keep me poor, but pay all my bills
10:31 AM roycroft: and free up my time to generate additional revenue
10:32 AM xxcoder: I gonna figure that too, but first health issues. I'd love to make extra $500 a month
10:33 AM roycroft: once the ss is in place i need about $1500/month net revenue in addition to that to do the stuff i want to do
10:33 AM roycroft: which shouldn't be too hard to generate
10:33 AM roycroft: but i need 1. for the ss stuff to be sorted, and 2. to have my time freed up to generate the revenue
10:34 AM roycroft: my boss cannot run the isp business - he has no idea how to do that
10:34 AM roycroft: in the end, he'll probably end up shutting it down, and i'll likely inherit a good chunk of the customers
10:35 AM roycroft: he'll want half the revenue for the customers i inherit, but that's not going to happen the way he thinks it will
10:35 AM roycroft: i'd be willing to give him half the profit, for a period of time, but not half the gross revenue
10:35 AM roycroft: i would be losing money if i did that
10:36 AM roycroft: and he seems to not understand rudimentary arithmetic
10:36 AM roycroft: if i pay $3/month for an anti-spam service, and charge the customer $4/month for the service, my boss would want $2 of that
10:36 AM roycroft: and thinks that's fair
10:37 AM roycroft: i'd be losing $1/month off the top
10:37 AM roycroft: not to mention the cost of billing and the cc charges
10:37 AM roycroft: anyway, i don't see that working out at all once we lose the major client
10:38 AM xxcoder: yeah I would rather close out than have arrangement that way, expecially with person like that
10:40 AM roycroft: he claims that he needs that because he has never taken a salary from the isp
10:40 AM roycroft: which, while technically true, ignores the fact that he has a consulting gig that consumes much of his time that is actually isp related and uses isp resources, but he has always billed separately
10:41 AM roycroft: and he will continue that work once the major client is gone
10:42 AM roycroft: i've already talked to him about paying the isp for the services he provides the consulting client, so that i can share in the profits from that, but he balked at that
10:42 AM roycroft: he also runs a print shop business, and that business consumes much of our isp resources for its website hosting, email, and file servers
10:43 AM roycroft: i again told him that after this new arrangement, the print shop would have to be billed for all of that
10:43 AM roycroft: and again, he balked
10:43 AM roycroft: he also wants to continue hosting email and websites for all his friends and relatives for free, things i told him we would need to bill for if we were to do a profit sharing arrangement
10:44 AM roycroft: he said he does not want to bill those people, so i told him that we could bill him instead
10:44 AM roycroft: it's a bad arrangement in every way
10:44 AM roycroft: for me, that is
10:44 AM roycroft: and regarding that last bit, he seems genuinely puzzled about it
10:45 AM roycroft: because i know almost all those people who get free services from him
10:45 AM roycroft: he doesn't understand why i would not want to continue giving them free stuff, since i know them and get along with them
10:46 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> he sounds like my ex wife.
10:46 AM roycroft: i think it's part asshole, part clueless
10:46 AM roycroft: and pretty much 100% victim
10:47 AM roycroft: he works hard at working hard
10:47 AM roycroft: and is not a millionaire
10:47 AM roycroft: that is everybody's fault but his
10:47 AM roycroft: anyway, when we lose the big client, i don't see any other course than complete separation from that job
10:47 AM roycroft: this profit sharing thing cannot work
10:48 AM roycroft: i asked for financials again, so i could determine how much money i would actually make
10:48 AM roycroft: and again, he demured
10:49 AM roycroft: probably because he doesn't have them, and never has
10:49 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> for the last 6 years where the kids were with me 100% she said I need to pay her alimony.. (she had a different name for it - I don't remember). I said - well then I am going to ask for child support.. She then said - but I can't pay that. She didn't get it.
10:50 AM roycroft: i read about a case recently where the husband had been paying child support for 7 years to his ex, but she had abandoned the kids and they had been living with the father all that time
10:50 AM roycroft: she still did not want to raise the kids, but objected when he tried to get a court order relieving him of the child support payments
10:51 AM roycroft: the husband didn't even ask for the 7 years worth to be paid back
10:51 AM roycroft: ex husband, i should say
10:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> there are certanly dead beat dads though.. but it does go both ways..
10:52 AM roycroft: yes, it does
10:52 AM roycroft: and i have no sympathy for deadbeat dads
10:52 AM roycroft: nor for moocher moms
10:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> same
10:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> same
10:53 AM roycroft: unfortunately the courts are still geared towards the moms when it comes to divorce stuff
10:53 AM roycroft: there's a reasonable chance that your ex would be awarded alimony but not ordered to pay you child support in your situation
10:55 AM roycroft: and if the roles were reversed, where she was the primary breadwinner during the marriage (and i have no idea of you were in your marriage), and had full custody of the kids, that you would be awarded alimony and also required to pay child support, just because you were the male
10:55 AM xxcoder: life is not fair. its why judgement should be as fair as possible
10:55 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> right. we have been seeing a co-parenting councilor. the ex has made comments about the courts (she sometimes uses it as a threat) but the councilor usually says - well- we really don't know how the court would side and would probably be more trouble than it is worth if these things can be worked through.. (especially with the history as it is currently)
10:59 AM roycroft: i've been really fortunate in that in all my past relationships, there's only one where my ex harbored hostility after the break up
10:59 AM roycroft: i've remained friends with all the rest, albeit we've drifted apart in many cases
11:00 AM roycroft: but in every case but that one, i'm confident i could run into an ex randomly, and we would hug and smile and catch up on our lives
11:00 AM xxcoder: I'm not much into relationships at all. its both negative and postive
11:00 AM roycroft: i never got the have to hate your ex thing
11:01 AM xxcoder: roy thats good. and yeah I dont get it either
11:01 AM roycroft: although i know lots of folks who think that's a requirement of a breakup
11:01 AM xxcoder: I dont get jokes that put down current relationships too
11:01 AM xxcoder: like all those wife bad jokes
11:02 AM roycroft: i don't find jokes that put down others, either individually or collectively, to be funny at all
11:02 AM xxcoder: I do call out such "wife bad" jokes sometimes, indirectly by wondering if it is time to gentle seperate
11:03 AM roycroft: i think i've mentioned this before, but there was a machining channel on youtube that was otherwise very good
11:03 AM roycroft: the guy who did the videos was an older guy, and an exec in his company, but provided very good content
11:04 AM roycroft: except he would tell very demeaning and really stupid "your wife" jokes in every video
11:04 AM roycroft: i found his videos unwatchable because of that
11:04 AM roycroft: anyway
11:05 AM roycroft: i'm going to cut a couple more pieces of plywood at lunch today, and try to dial in the kerf compensation on the laser
11:05 AM xxcoder: nice. hope its a success
11:05 AM roycroft: looks like i won't have much, if any time to work on that after my day job today, since i have this client emergency to deal with
11:06 AM roycroft: but i'm getting close to having that done, and would like to get it done
11:06 AM roycroft: i'm really pleased that the vent system is completed
11:06 AM roycroft: a little smoke was building up in the laser enclosure last night, but it did not last long
11:07 AM xxcoder: wonder if it means it needs more inlets
11:07 AM roycroft: i ordered an a-b switch for the laser so i can switch between the regular y axis and the rotary axis without having to swap any cables
11:07 AM roycroft: and the guy who makes those also has high cfm fans that are the same size (85mm) as the one that xtool ship with their enclosure
11:07 AM roycroft: so i added one of those to the order
11:08 AM roycroft: i have enough inlet opening
11:08 AM roycroft: i just need more air flow
11:08 AM roycroft: so when i'm done with the client tonight i'll hopefully be able to swap that fan in and install the switch
11:09 AM xxcoder: ok
11:09 AM roycroft: and hopefully that fan will keep things clearer
11:09 AM roycroft: i have a much larger fan that i plan on installing when i build the proper cabinet for the laser
11:09 AM roycroft: it has a 4" inlet and outlet
11:10 AM roycroft: and should move a lot of air
11:10 AM roycroft: but that's a down the road thing
11:22 AM xxcoder: cool
11:28 AM roycroft: cool and clear, hopefully :)
11:28 AM xxcoder: indeed
11:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> there is a mechanic on youtube 'south main auto' who is a really good mechanic. Very good. Him and his wife always have cute interactions.
11:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> You can tell they actually like each other.
11:46 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> He gets to the root cause of any problem. Not just pulling the parts cannon.
11:49 AM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> My Mesa clone arrived today, 7i92, works 🙂
11:57 AM roycroft: i used to watch junkyard mook's channel sometimes
11:58 AM roycroft: another husband and wife channel where you can tell they're pretty tight
11:58 AM * JT-Shop almost wonders why a package shipped on the 13th in va takes two days to leave the po
11:58 AM roycroft: i don't think she's still doing videos, but her husband is
12:01 PM roycroft: the wrenching on that channel is so-so
12:01 PM roycroft: but the couple are fun
12:01 PM roycroft: they focus on taking old, dead junkers and turning them into old, dead, barely running junkers
12:01 PM roycroft: not the best premise, but they seem to do ok with it
12:02 PM xxcoder: why not? theres channels of people just eating stuff
12:02 PM xxcoder: not channels I watch, but if theres an interest theres going to be videos.
12:08 PM roycroft: and then there's the swedish fireplace channel
12:08 PM roycroft: which is apparently watched by a substantial portion of the swedish population
12:08 PM xxcoder: theres so many fire videos lol
12:09 PM xxcoder: I use one when I am testing latency. fireplace 24 hours HD
12:09 PM roycroft: you should watch the 10 hour tro-lo-lo channel
12:09 PM roycroft: you cannot hear
12:09 PM roycroft: so you are the ideal viewer of that channel
12:09 PM xxcoder: lol sounds boring
12:17 PM roycroft: https://www.blameitonthevoices.com/2010/03/trololo-lyrics.html
12:17 PM roycroft: there are the lyrics to tro-lo-lo, in russian
12:17 PM roycroft: no translation into english available nor needed :)
12:18 PM xxcoder: yeah thats annoying to read lol
12:18 PM roycroft: scroll down below the image
12:18 PM roycroft: the lyrics are posted in plaintext in the discussion
12:19 PM JT-Shop: how nice both axles need a 0.133" shim and you only get one of each size in the kit
12:19 PM xxcoder: yeah I could read both pic and plaintext :) just that text is annoying to read lol
12:20 PM roycroft: take my word for it, listening to it is more annoying
12:21 PM roycroft: i once owned a fiat 124
12:21 PM roycroft: the valves for that engine were adjusted with shims
12:21 PM roycroft: eight valves, a shim kit was expensive and had one each of about 20 sizes of shims
12:21 PM roycroft: and of course i needed a bunch that were the same size
12:22 PM roycroft: like 4 or 5
12:22 PM roycroft: it's been decades, so don't remember exactly how many, but i remember being really pissed off that i had to buy a bunch of shim kits and only need one shim out of 20 from each kit
12:23 PM roycroft: i probably should have ground a couple thousandths or so off the ends of the valve stems where the same size shim was needed, to utilize more than one shim from a kit
12:24 PM JT-Shop: I found a place that just sells shims in each size
12:24 PM roycroft: but i had no way of doing that back then reasonably, and i'm sure i never thought about doing it
12:24 PM Tom_L: cool
12:24 PM JT-Shop: but the shim is $5 and shipping is $16
12:24 PM JT-Shop: wtf
12:24 PM Tom_L: steel?
12:24 PM roycroft: the fiat ones were hardened steel, i'm sure
12:25 PM roycroft: i don't know that jt's application would need hardened shims
12:25 PM JT-Shop: yeah they are steel
12:25 PM JT-Shop: I think I'll go borrow a surface grinder and make one the size I need from a thicker one
12:25 PM Tom_L: well that though did cross my mind
12:26 PM Tom_L: did they get it wired up?
12:28 PM JT-Shop: yup they had it going in just a couple of days
12:28 PM JT-Shop: found someone else selling the shims single
12:28 PM Tom_L: be careful though, they might put you to work
12:30 PM roycroft: lovely
12:30 PM roycroft: a parcel that was due to arrive friday last has taken a trip to the coast now
12:31 PM JT-Shop: hmm they want $15 shipping too and it is a very small part
12:31 PM roycroft: it went from portland to astora, which is in the northwest corner of oregon, at the mouth of the coumbia
12:31 PM roycroft: astoria
12:31 PM Tom_L: i think i'd pay a visit to the surface grinder
12:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I fired up our surface grinder recently...
12:44 PM roycroft: there's a nice used surface grinder with a big mag vise on fb marketplace for $1200
12:44 PM roycroft: if i had the shop space i'd get it
12:45 PM roycroft: although the floor standing powermatic mortiser for $1k would be a lot more useful
12:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> this one is all hydraulic but has bushings for bearings.. (so you have to fill up the cups before running..
12:45 PM roycroft: to the point that i might make the shop space for it
12:45 PM roycroft: i have a nice bench model jet mortiser, but the powermatic has an x-y table, which is really nice
12:45 PM roycroft: with the jet i have to position the part manually and move it manually
12:46 PM roycroft: the powermatic is in central oregon, so if i decide i want to get it i should decide soon
12:46 PM roycroft: getting home would probably be fine, as i'd have a few hundred pounds of ballast in the pickup bed, but getting over there could be dicey
12:47 PM roycroft: i also don't have chains for the pickup yet, and don't really want to invest in a couple sets if i don't have to
12:48 PM roycroft: no snow in the pass today but that will change come mid-week
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> Hey, do you know if it's possible to send data from linuxcnc to an ethercat device /master?
01:38 PM lcnc-relay: <CaptainHindsight@> yes
01:39 PM lcnc-relay: <CaptainHindsight@> https://forum.linuxcnc.org/ethercat
01:39 PM lcnc-relay: <CaptainHindsight@> vibram@ ^^^^
02:35 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> Indeed but is there existing project about this? I would like to send information such as the current speed, gcode line and so on
02:46 PM roycroft: my third go at kerf compensation is too tight - the parts won't go together
02:46 PM roycroft: but at least i now have a narrow braket to work within
02:46 PM * roycroft anticipated making some scrap plywood while working through the process
02:52 PM xxcoder: nice.
03:03 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> I'm curious about mapping out leadscrew error.
03:03 PM lcnc-relay: The general idea that I have in mind is:
03:03 PM lcnc-relay: * connect a 1um magnetic or glass scale to the encoder inputs on my mesa 7i96s
03:03 PM lcnc-relay: * temporarily but rigidly mount scale to an axis
03:03 PM lcnc-relay: ... long message truncated: https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/PuGuLnMeSPjoHqjnomjldkYG/-2WSeReDCwM (7 lines)
03:04 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> The encoder inputs on the 7i96s are nominally meant for the spindle, is there a way to sample them independently vs interfaced to the spindle?
03:05 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> I'm curious about mapping out leadscrew error.
03:05 PM lcnc-relay: The general idea that I have in mind is:
03:05 PM lcnc-relay: * connect a 1um magnetic or glass scale to the encoder inputs on my mesa 7i96s
03:05 PM lcnc-relay: * temporarily but rigidly mount scale to an axis
03:05 PM lcnc-relay: ... long message truncated: https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/ynCbleYOajYuXcULuaSKHMSv/U48AX5zQ9bE (7 lines)
03:07 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> I have a 5um scale on hand that is long enough and which I could use to test out the process. I'd need to acquire a 1um one.
03:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> linuxcnc doesn't care how or what the encoder is counting..
03:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> You can hook it up or read it any way you want.
03:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I also think you are limited to like 255 points along an axis.
03:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> alex.w#18266@ ^\
03:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Although I cannot find the 255 limit anywhere.. But am pretty sure that is the limit.
03:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> ah - there it is
03:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/config/ini-config.html#sub:ini:sec:joint-num
03:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> start reading at COMP_FILE
03:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> there are 2 different comp files - one that just comps (no backlash) and one that takes into account backlash..
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (so oon the second on - you would run the axis both directions and compile the data)
03:19 PM lcnc-relay: <Jacob@> alex.w#18266@: Keep us posted on your progress, in the next couple of weeks I’ll be doing the same with linear scales & 7i96s, but on a lathe
03:23 PM JT-Shop: well I must have dropped the trailing arm bushing tool... one of the 1/2" x 4" G5 hex bolts has some damaged threads at the end
03:23 PM JT-Shop: I bet I don't have one
03:28 PM roycroft: maybe you can put the bolt on the lathe and clean up the threads
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <Tom_Cell@> Chase it with a dje
03:53 PM JT-Shop: I don't have a 1/2-20 die nut :)
03:53 PM JT-Shop: I ground a bevel on it
03:54 PM roycroft: well i'm impressed
03:55 PM roycroft: i ordered some parts from geeksatlarge.com for my laser
03:55 PM roycroft: one of them just arrived - it's an a-b switch to switch between the y axis and rotary axis
03:55 PM roycroft: the part was $25, which i thought was fair
03:56 PM roycroft: it arrived in a nice powdercoated metal enclosure with counterbored hex head bolts on the cover, the logo and url were printed on it in metallic gold ink
03:56 PM roycroft: and it came in a black 4oz tin that has the logo and url printed in silver metallig ink
03:57 PM roycroft: metallic
03:57 PM roycroft: pretty fancy for a cheap part
03:58 PM roycroft: and refreshingly nice for a small outfit to pay so much attention to packaging and branding
03:59 PM roycroft: not to mention the stuff shipped the day after i ordered it, and i ordered it at night, so it might have shipped the same day
04:00 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> skunkworks@: Yes, this is why I would do offline analysis to figure out where the non-linearities are in my specific ballscrews to figure out the 255 actual points to give linuxcnc
04:01 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> Thanks, I'll see if I get time to play with hooking up the encoder to my 7i96s and playing with this
04:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Varitasium did a video on turbine blades... It is pretty cool
04:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I had no clue how they were done.. it is crazy
04:33 PM roycroft: i should imagine they're done very carefully and very precisely
04:35 PM roycroft: on a precision scale from bricks to ball bearings, turbine blades are a bit past ball bearings
04:40 PM xxcoder: yeah. if windmind is little bit off, its soon not off in any way, because its broken
04:41 PM xxcoder: *windmill
04:41 PM xxcoder: same for high rpm turbine really
04:45 PM rdtsc-w: worked on a cement block-forming machine... all hydraulic, rather impressive
04:46 PM xxcoder: I guess they did some tuning after cast
04:47 PM rdtsc-w: think the forms are heated, and the mixture is filled to some point and then the whole thing squeezed and it cures in seconds
04:48 PM xxcoder: I remember reading about new windmill blades thats purely plastic
04:49 PM xxcoder: infinitely recyclable plastic, can just melt and cast again
04:49 PM roycroft: hopefully there is an easy way to clean the bird poop off of them first
04:53 PM JT-Shop: I should work on that project for foxy...
04:54 PM xxcoder: https://www.nrel.gov/manufacturing/comet-wind-blade-resin what im talking about
04:55 PM roycroft: windmill blades, while they need to be well-balanced, do not need to be made as perfectly as turbine blades
04:55 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, foxy want more copier lathes converted?
04:56 PM roycroft: they rotate at very low speeds, and would not be susceptible to turbulence anywhere near to the degree that high speed turbine blades are
04:56 PM JT-Shop: naw, I converted all of them, now he want's a coarse then finish cut on them
04:56 PM xxcoder: yeah makes sense
04:56 PM Tom_L: hmm
04:56 PM roycroft: but they tend to be very large, and have a lot of rotating mass
04:56 PM Tom_L: roycroft, the tips of the windmills around here are fairly high velocity
04:57 PM roycroft: if they're not very well balanced they will imediately shake themselves apart
04:57 PM Tom_L: they have problems with them eroding
04:57 PM roycroft: the tips are somewhat high velocity, but not like jet engines
04:57 PM Tom_L: no
04:57 PM roycroft: but yeah, i get your point
04:57 PM xxcoder: hose termosplastic windmill blades is amazing from what I read, it exceeds fiberglass ones and are cheaper
04:58 PM Tom_L: they make alot of those around here too
04:58 PM roycroft: even if you're rotating at 3rpm, if the blades are 100' long that's a lot of velocity at the tips
04:58 PM Tom_L: i've seen them haul them on semis and the 'bed' of the truck is extended
04:59 PM Tom_L: i'd guestimate them longer than 100' but wouldn't swear by it
04:59 PM roycroft: i don't know how long they typically are, but 100' is in the ballpark
04:59 PM Tom_L: 170'
05:00 PM Tom_L: says ai
05:00 PM JT-Shop: The current longest wind turbine blade is 153 meters long, manufactured by Dongfang Electric (DEC) for its H2X000-31X model.
05:00 PM Tom_L: they make them about 50 mi from here in Hutchinson
05:00 PM JT-Shop: carp that's 500'
05:01 PM xxcoder: long indeed
05:01 PM Tom_L: wouldn't wanna get smacked in the head with one
05:01 PM roycroft: and that's just the radius
05:01 PM JT-Shop: the diameter is 300m or 984.252'
05:01 PM Tom_L: must really be geard up
05:02 PM xxcoder: balance must be really tight
05:02 PM xxcoder: as precise as possible
05:02 PM roycroft: at 3rpm that's over 100mph at the tips
05:02 PM Tom_L: i believe it
05:03 PM roycroft: 106mph, to be more precise
05:03 PM Tom_L: dust in the air erode the tips
05:03 PM Tom_L: we have plenty of that around here
05:04 PM Tom_L: Farmers can earn an average of $8,000 to $20,000 per turbine per year
05:04 PM JT-Shop: 100, 106 what ever it takes
05:07 PM JT-Shop: my brother worked on the foundation crew for wind turbines for a few years
05:09 PM roycroft: yes, it's a good way to earn some extra income
05:10 PM roycroft: and since there's no export market any more for most american agricultural products, that extra income can mean the difference between survival and bankruptcy for small farmers
05:11 PM Tom_L: my local tool guy gets income off a cell tower
05:11 PM roycroft: more money per acre than growing stuff, in many cases
05:11 PM Tom_L: less physical labor as well
05:12 PM Tom_L: although i've never seen those guys sitting around
05:12 PM JT-Shop: around here the farmers are busy year round
05:12 PM Tom_L: if they're not in the field, they're in the barn fixing something
05:13 PM JT-Shop: they just harvested the cotton crop a few weeks ago
05:13 PM Tom_L: yeah, i've seen alot of cotton bales around here lately
05:14 PM Tom_L: mostly in the drier areas around here
05:14 PM Tom_L: it's a dry crop
05:14 PM JT-Shop: they seem to rotate different crops here
05:14 PM Tom_L: also talked to one that does sesamie seeds which is also a dry crop
05:15 PM Tom_L: took me out in the field and showed me a plant. nothing what i expected
05:15 PM Tom_L: i figured they'd look like a wheat plant
05:19 PM JT-Shop: speaking of plants my basil is growing nicely
05:20 PM JT-Shop: I have 4 that took to root
05:33 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> The farm where I grew they're still harvesting, brusselsprouts will be harvested below freezing
05:34 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> +up
05:35 PM _unreal_: lucid where I grew up in maine, we had rasberrys that where becoming ripe into the first frosts and there after
05:35 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
05:36 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Yeah, some plants are well adapted, my dad said they were harvesting cauliflower last week
05:36 PM _unreal_: my mom and step dad planted so many blackberries and raspberries in the back yard it was discusting. you could pick 4 lbs of black berries every day for ever
05:36 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Well into frost
05:36 PM _unreal_: the wierd ones where the 2" black berries
05:37 PM _unreal_: made for great blackberry pie
05:37 PM _unreal_: heck I have a single picture BEFORE I LEFT MAINE of my daughter picking thenm
05:37 PM _unreal_: them
05:37 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Around here noone plants blackberries, you try to tame them
05:38 PM _unreal_: the LONG black berries where planted
05:38 PM _unreal_: some special bread from poland
05:39 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I didn't have much success growing cauliflower, or other brassicas. Too many insect pests, and I'm not keen on spraying poisons around
05:39 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> squash goes gangbusters, tho
05:39 PM _unreal_: mmmmmm squish
05:39 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> so many delicious squish
05:40 PM _unreal_: speaking of I may cook the pumpkin tonight
05:40 PM _unreal_: never got the chance to carve it for Halloween
05:40 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> pattypans, and crooknecks, and Hubbards, and lots of others. Spaghetti squash, too
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Are you just inventing words now?
05:41 PM _unreal_: thinking butter back with brown sugar and tarragon
05:41 PM _unreal_: yes
05:41 PM _unreal_: which word(s)
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> squarsh
05:41 PM _unreal_: squish
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I'm gonhollyhop them into grumpardink
05:42 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> just don't trivet the remnons
05:42 PM _unreal_: I made pumpkin beer once and PUMPKIN mead once
05:42 PM _unreal_: was FREAKING AMAZING
05:43 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Anything is amazing if you're drunk enough
05:43 PM _unreal_: I wish I had written down my ratios when it came to that pumpkin mead GODDDDD it was god
05:43 PM _unreal_: ? How did you know my glass was empty
05:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> It would have tonbe
05:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> To be
05:44 PM _unreal_: huh?
05:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Jokes
05:44 PM _unreal_: o0h
05:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> We call it takin da piss
05:45 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I definitely don't believe you on the mead though
05:47 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> That sounds like the deep wisdom of a fourteen year old who's run out of moonshine and decided that the bottle of 20 year old cherry liqueur your parents never touch is an amazing idea
05:48 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> And noz that didn't happen in 1992
05:49 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> of course not. None of us EVER would have consumed the antique cherry Kirshwasser
05:49 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> was that like a staple item for our parents?
05:50 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> It was definitely not an antique for a reason
05:51 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Because whoever bought it took one taste and then left it at the back of the cupboard presumably for eternity
05:51 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I would expect it was meant to mix in other drinks
05:51 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Or left as a ticking lesson
06:00 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Looks like we might get snow tomorrow
06:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Weather report say rain at 2C, for some reason the met weather reports completely ignore elevation
06:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> So the actual temp is likely to be -2
06:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Great discussion.. but I was talking about jet engine turbine blades...
06:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> 🙂
06:04 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> But you left and then there was a squirrel
06:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yep
06:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I should have specified...
06:05 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> _is cackling_
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I did mention veritasium.. I would have thought someone would have looked...
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> It's 5 past midnight gimme a break dad
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Seriously, I probably will have a look tomorrow
06:08 PM _unreal_: just got the first of the PANEL pc's I ordered
06:08 PM _unreal_: GOD its heavy
06:08 PM _unreal_: suprised they didnt get delivered at the same time considreing I paid $1500
06:09 PM _unreal_: So what version of lcnc should I download for an I7 poc
06:09 PM _unreal_: cpc
06:10 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> skunkworks@: Gimme spoilers, is it some argon atmosphere titanium forging?
06:10 PM _unreal_: 7pm here
06:11 PM _unreal_: I'm going to have to order some arms to mount these panel pcs when I get the second one
06:11 PM _unreal_: that are durable
06:11 PM _unreal_: they are NOT light
06:11 PM _unreal_: lite
06:11 PM _unreal_: t4nk_fn, whats new
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> nope - it goes deeper than that. lost wax casting - then magically making the 'crystals' in the blade all the same direction - and then one total crystal...
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Cool
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it is a good video
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Some sort of induction mechanism?
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> and metallurgy...
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I was only half watching it when I was driving
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Lol
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> uh - I mean listening..
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Was that you I was driving behind earlier?
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (android auto is awesome.. If I ever get another car - it will have android auto)
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> My android auto will show videos natively, but not connected to my phone
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> But that's because it's hacked
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> there is a hack that allows me to play youtube videos.. It really is awesome.
06:16 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Yeah doesn't work for a phone connection for me, but I do have linux terminal access to the headubit
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Head unit
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> It's running some sort of nvidia jetson computer
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> When I got my new pixel - it stopped working because of newer android. I found out that if I got a wifi adaptor (normally my phone was connected usb) it fixed it and it did. Which is pretty awesome now because I just keep my phone in my pocket now.
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> (this is circa 2017 android auto)
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Yeah mine is 2017
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> This is a VW and it would be cool if I could update the firmware - but currently that sounds like only the dealer can do
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> So something I found out that the Internet will not tell you, is that if you enable dev mode you can override the default audio mode
06:21 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Ok, in that case, you can probaly get what I have
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Mib more incredible bash
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Think it's any vag car
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Available for
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> I was quoted £980 for android auto activation
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Or I could just download an iso and not pay
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol - https://photos.app.goo.gl/ab22LrpkoCTrnbUTA
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Hah
06:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> been very happy with this car
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> started like this
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/h3HJC8ZdeVEbgiyX6
06:35 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> That's a project
06:35 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Passat?
06:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> jetta
06:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it wasn't that bad. It was hit pretty high.. only on fender support needed to be cut out and welded back in
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> one
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Cool, Jetta might be US name for passat
06:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> we have the passat here. they are very similar
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Ok
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Sont think jetta is sold here
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Don't
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> We have golf then Passat I tgink
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> same
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> and Jetta 🙂
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> actally - I don't know if we have the golf anymore. I thought that was the GTI
06:41 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Lot's of different ones, dunno that mich about them
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/sD9kxd7tNE91Ze4M7
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Only vw I've had is a tiguan, but 85% of my cars have been vag
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Moatly audis
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Mostly
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Do you have vcds?
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> It really helped me out getting the airbags reset..
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Looks like an autobot got mullered by starscream
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Like an obd thing?
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> yes
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> but for (what you call) vag 😉
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Right, no haven't had to get a specific one yet, just disconnect the battery if I need to poke around with anything that would trigger it
06:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/VCDS.php
06:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it lets you change memory addresses - but you really should know what you are doing.. lol
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Did parking brake reset with a generic obd on the tiguan
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Looks like that thing doesn't support my car
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> aww - poop
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> now I am just showing off
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/T9XS68FxVY4Q3MiJ9
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Awesomw job
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> About to pass out, nightnight
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> night
06:53 PM _unreal_: so which build Should I download? LinuxCNC 2.9.4 Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO or older?
06:54 PM _unreal_: 2.9.7 or an older version then these?
06:59 PM _unreal_: ?
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> what hardware are you running with it
07:17 PM _unreal_: i7
07:17 PM _unreal_: 16gb ram
07:17 PM _unreal_: 7i96
07:18 PM _unreal_: skunk I just got the first of 2 panel pc's I spent $1500 on
07:18 PM _unreal_: robust machine so far as I can tell
07:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I mean - are you running the printer port or mesa hardware?
07:42 PM xxcoder: wow Baumgartner Restoration latest is insane. he restores a paint thats way too damaged. so he have connections digitally restore a picture of painting before damage, and create shape out of blank spaces, print and laser cut water slide of that face parts
07:42 PM xxcoder: put it on painting, then retouch over it.
07:43 PM xxcoder: it would have otherwise taken way too many creative decisions, which conservators hte
07:43 PM xxcoder: hate
07:58 PM roycroft: well that sucks
07:58 PM roycroft: the job i went to today
07:58 PM _unreal_: yay just got my second PC
07:59 PM roycroft: the client is in her '80s, and a sibling is having health problem so she's driving to kentucky to deal with that
07:59 PM _unreal_: skunk mesa
07:59 PM roycroft: after she left her house got burgled
07:59 PM roycroft: it was ransacked, her safe opened, and a bunch of valuables stolen
07:59 PM _unreal_: skunkworks I'm going to run both of these panel pc's as twins setup
08:00 PM roycroft: her helper could not figure out how to view the surveillance videos
08:00 PM _unreal_: only difference is I believe I'll get the 7i96s for the second mesa card
08:00 PM roycroft: so they called me in, and i was able to find the footage of when the perp arrived and left (no inside camera, so no video of the burglary itself)
08:00 PM roycroft: it was definitely an inside job
08:01 PM roycroft: the perp was only there for 10 minutes, and obviously knew where the cameras were, as he had a mask and hood on, but still turned his head and covered his face when in view of the cameras
08:01 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> particularly heinous to rip off seniors
08:01 PM roycroft: this was in the middle of the night, and there was no lighting outside, and the cameras do not have any leds the glow in the dark, so it would have been impossible to see them - he had to know where they were
08:02 PM roycroft: it really is
08:02 PM roycroft: i feel so bad for her
08:02 PM xxcoder: thats sad :(
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> or anyone else that's particularly vulnerable
08:02 PM roycroft: i'm glad i was able to recover the video footage
08:02 PM xxcoder: yeah hopefully it leads to arrests, as low chance that is
08:02 PM roycroft: this happened last wednesday, and the camera system only preserves videos for a week, then overwrites
08:02 PM roycroft: the other guy has been trying to recover the footage since last thursday
08:03 PM roycroft: finally they called me in
08:03 PM roycroft: i actually think it's a much greater chance of catching the perp now
08:03 PM xxcoder: I certainly hope so
08:03 PM roycroft: it's so obvious that the person knew exactly where everything is
08:03 PM roycroft: so that narrows down the list of suspects
08:05 PM roycroft: also, the burgler went straight into the back door of the garage, without even checking the other doors he walked past getting there
08:06 PM roycroft: and the landscaper was there wednesday afternoon working, and said she could not lock the garage door, so she left it open
08:06 PM roycroft: coincidence?
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> hmm
08:08 PM roycroft: the cops are not too interested in this
08:08 PM roycroft: so the client is hiring a forensics company in eugene to dust the safe and some other stuff for fingerprints
08:09 PM _unreal_: So where is the install to HD option for the lcnc ?
08:10 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> cops don't usually seem too interested in theft cases
08:10 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/downloads/
08:10 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> probably just that successfully prosecuting is difficult at best
08:11 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, I've already burnt the dvde
08:11 PM _unreal_: dvd
08:11 PM _unreal_: how do I install it? its in live boot?
08:11 PM Tom_L: no
08:11 PM _unreal_: ?
08:11 PM Tom_L: live boot iirc lets you test run it without installing
08:11 PM Tom_L: something like graphic install or such
08:11 PM Tom_L: been a while...
08:11 PM _unreal_: so there is no install in the live boot?
08:12 PM Tom_L: i think that option runs off the cd
08:12 PM _unreal_: linuxcnc 2.9.4
08:12 PM Tom_L: for a test run
08:12 PM Tom_L: yeah then do an update after installing
08:12 PM _unreal_: should have an install option
08:12 PM Tom_L: i'm on 2.9.6 iirc
08:13 PM _unreal_: thats what I'm trying to figure out
08:13 PM _unreal_: how to install from the dvd
08:13 PM Tom_L: should come up with a menu
08:14 PM _unreal_: just not seeing it regardless downloading 2.9.6
08:14 PM _unreal_: iso
08:14 PM Tom_L: install 2.9.4
08:14 PM Tom_L: amd64 right?
08:14 PM _unreal_: that was the first link
08:14 PM _unreal_: The Debian 12 Bookworm ISO will install a full Debian system with the required realtime kernel and the linuxcnc-uspace application. It uses a PREEMPT-RT patched kernel which is close to mainstream Linux but does not, in some cases, give quite such good realtime performance as the previous RTAI kernel. It is very often more than good enough. It should probably be the first version tried even if using a parallel port. This is
08:14 PM _unreal_: compatible with all Mesa and Pico interface boards
08:15 PM _unreal_: I dont really care if I have the latest
08:15 PM Tom_L: they must have just added the 2.9.7 trixie stuff
08:15 PM Tom_L: yes install that
08:15 PM Tom_L: the 12 preempt-rt one
08:16 PM _unreal_: I'm more interested in preformance unless I'm trying to tweek nano nano seconds
08:16 PM Tom_L: using the 7i96 preempt-rt is a requirement
08:17 PM Tom_L: ethernet
08:20 PM Tom_L: i may have to test that 2.9.7 rpi5 trixie one later
08:20 PM _unreal: wtf I just froze
08:20 PM Tom_L: impossible! yer in florida
08:20 PM _unreal: I am NOT liking UBUNTU 25.10
08:20 PM _unreal: har har har
08:21 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't run it
08:21 PM _unreal: I'm very tempted to go back to fedora
08:21 PM Tom_L: that 2.9.4 install is a full os & lcnc install
08:22 PM _unreal: right, I'm just trying to figure out how to install it. rather then run it as live
08:22 PM _unreal: there is no install to HD option
08:22 PM _unreal: that I have found so far
08:22 PM Tom_L: it's not rocket science
08:22 PM _unreal: I'm good at linux not great at linux
08:22 PM Tom_L: select graphic install from the menu
08:22 PM Tom_L: iirc
08:23 PM Tom_L: like i said, it's been a while
08:23 PM _unreal: looking
08:25 PM _unreal: not seeing anything that says install
08:26 PM Tom_L: LinuxCNC 2.9.4 Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO
08:26 PM Tom_L: right?
08:27 PM Tom_L: from the /downloads/ page
08:28 PM _unreal: yes
08:28 PM _unreal: I burned the DVD
08:28 PM _unreal: I also just downloaded the 9.6 version I just have not burned it because the USB drive is being used by that other panel pc at this second
08:28 PM _unreal: having booted from the 2.9.4 iso
08:29 PM Tom_L: don't boot from it, when you start the cd you should get a menu
08:29 PM Tom_L: dvd
08:30 PM Tom_L: i think they're getting to bloated for a cd nowdays
08:30 PM _unreal: so there the install is before live boot
08:30 PM _unreal: sigh
08:31 PM Tom_L: :)
08:33 PM _unreal: You guys would love these panel pc's
08:36 PM Tom_L: i'm kinda likin my rpi5 touch screen setup right now
08:37 PM Tom_L: once you get it installed, run a latency test
08:37 PM Tom_L: or latency histogram
08:37 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/Rpi5_nvme_histogram4.png
08:38 PM Tom_L: if you can beat that i'll be impressed
08:39 PM _unreal: I will when it finishes
08:39 PM _unreal: copying data right now
08:39 PM _unreal: :/
08:39 PM Tom_L: servo thread is what you're looking at since you're running mesa hardware
08:40 PM _unreal: I ran that I believ and got like 4882 ish on the servo thread in the live boot
08:41 PM _unreal: I forget the other number, highre regardless
08:42 PM _unreal: ok well I'm going to go shower while I wait
08:43 PM _unreal: back in a few, also I need to make din din for the kido
08:43 PM Tom_L: it may not be done asking you questions
08:44 PM _unreal: fyi, MODEL: ppc-156a-c cpu i7-1165g7 16gb ram 128gb SSD
08:47 PM _unreal: https://www.piesiatech.com/15-inch-industrial-tablet/ppc-156a-c
08:47 PM _unreal: 2 of those
08:48 PM Tom_L: you showed those the other day
08:50 PM Tom_L: i think i got the same screen
08:50 PM _unreal: same screen?
08:50 PM Tom_L: touch screen
08:50 PM _unreal: oh
08:50 PM Tom_L: waveshare iirc
08:51 PM _unreal: its very sharp and responsive
08:51 PM Tom_L: x2
08:51 PM _unreal: 15.6"
08:51 PM Tom_L: yeah
08:52 PM _unreal: ok the basic install is done. I had to do the install with out an internet connection
08:52 PM _unreal: shower time, feed kid and I'll be back to finish the isntall
08:52 PM Tom_L: should have a cnc menu
08:53 PM _unreal: it does
08:53 PM _unreal: which one shall I test
08:53 PM Tom_L: histogram is the graph
08:54 PM Tom_L: run a handfull of glxgears
08:54 PM Tom_L: it's a button on the bottom of the histogram
08:54 PM Tom_L: watch some yt etc to load it
08:55 PM _unreal: with nothing going max jitter 2806
08:55 PM Tom_L: i ran mine overnite
08:56 PM _unreal: ok its got one instance of glx gears going I'm going to shower now
08:56 PM _unreal: already 10pm
08:57 PM _unreal: and jitter jumped to 4889
09:12 PM Tom_L: i ran 8 on that test
09:13 PM _unreal: ok out of shower.. Its on a fresh install
09:13 PM _unreal: Idont even know what the drivers look like
09:13 PM Tom_L: glxgears
09:13 PM _unreal: after I feed the kid and my self I'll deep dive this panel pc
09:13 PM Tom_L: i'll be counting sheep
09:14 PM _unreal: Tom_L, I'm talking drivers like regarding GPU
09:14 PM _unreal: I'll be hurding them lol
09:14 PM _unreal: herding
09:14 PM Tom_L: if you got good latency and the pannel works (it should) leave it alone
09:14 PM _unreal: its a partial install
09:15 PM _unreal: I had to do the install with out internet
09:15 PM _unreal: didnt have time to set it up
09:15 PM Tom_L: it would have been easier
09:15 PM _unreal: ?
09:15 PM Tom_L: net install
09:15 PM _unreal: I have to find a network cable first of all
09:16 PM Tom_L: then it would have detected and set that up
09:16 PM Tom_L: now you get to do it manually
09:16 PM _unreal: naa I'll just start it over
09:16 PM _unreal: I also just did the install, I didnt do the advanced install or anything
09:16 PM Tom_L: you don't need to
09:16 PM _unreal: I dont even know what the options are any more its been so long since I installed it last. heck the other pc that is still setup is a core 2
09:20 PM _unreal: ok hamburgers started
09:21 PM Tom_L: if somebody happens to see Andy you might mention the link on the downloads page: LinuxCNC Uspace 2.9.7 arm64 (Pi) is 404
09:21 PM _unreal: sucks I dont have a good system for mounting that panel PC for setup purposes
09:22 PM _unreal: Tom_L, I dont even know the working differences bvetween 2.4, 2.5, 2.7
09:22 PM Tom_L: about 3
09:22 PM Tom_L: .3
09:23 PM _unreal: humm.... thats quite a difference. its nearly a factor of 2
09:23 PM Tom_L: from 2.9.4 to 2.9.6 were minor updtes
09:23 PM _unreal: hence I dont know if its worth going with the latest
09:23 PM Tom_L: 2.9.7 looks like a trixie (Debian 13) install
09:23 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> Are you talking about 2.x versions or 2.9.x versions?
09:24 PM Tom_L: sounded like it to me
09:24 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> those are very different things
09:24 PM _unreal: alex 2.9.x
09:25 PM Tom_L: alex, flex has a handfull of gui examples in the example folder when you get to it
09:25 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> It's about 3rd on my list now, but I am interested to play with it
09:26 PM lcnc-relay: <alex.w#18266@> thanks
09:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/Rpi5/
09:26 PM Tom_L: latest one i did
09:26 PM Tom_L: (it's in there)
09:28 PM _unreal: hum ya 2.9.7 isnt even displayed https://www.linuxcnc.org/iso/
09:28 PM _unreal: ISO
09:28 PM Tom_L: there's a deb and an img file for rpi5
09:29 PM Tom_L: deb for amd64
09:29 PM Tom_L: the deb assumes you have a working os already
09:29 PM _unreal: right but I was looking for ISO for 2.9.7
09:30 PM _unreal: save me from Rtai patching
09:30 PM Tom_L: you won't be running RTAI with the 7i96 anyway
09:30 PM Tom_L: you need preempt-rt
09:31 PM _unreal: right HENCE I just installed LinuxCNC 2.9.4 Debian 12 Bookworm PREEMPT-RT ISO
09:31 PM Tom_L: once installed you can do an update and upgrade
09:31 PM Tom_L: sudo apt update
09:32 PM Tom_L: that should bring you at least to 2.9.6
09:34 PM Tom_L: later..
09:35 PM _unreal: ok ethernet cable found
09:35 PM _unreal: update and upgrade done
11:49 PM xxcoder: interesting channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odjYAPczKDI
