#linuxcnc Calendar

12:31 AM pere: andypugh: I thought it should only into master, so that is why I mentioned master and pushed to master. I did not change the tag mechanic of the CI job.

08:30 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> probably another 2 tons of cast
08:47 AM rdtsc-w: wonder if that's all "low-radiation" iron, cast before the age of atomic testing?
08:49 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I think that comes from ships that have been sunk..
08:50 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> otherwise - all steel was exposed to atmospheric radiation..

10:49 AM JT-Shop: strut is clean and ready for paint
01:51 PM JT-Shop: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c3-tech-performance/4939826-82-rear-suspension-rebuild-3.html#post1609238102
01:55 PM Tom_L: gonna replace it?
01:57 PM Tom_L: that forum is slow as molasses
02:01 PM JT-Shop: not sure
02:01 PM JT-Shop: I can't "feel" any depth to the scarred area with my el-cheapo bore gauge
02:02 PM xxcoder: any toothpick type tool?
02:02 PM xxcoder: I would think thats easier to feel roughness with that
02:03 PM JT-Shop: yup
02:03 PM Tom_L: bearing presses in?
02:03 PM Tom_L: (it should)
02:04 PM Tom_L: clean up the old bearing and see how it presses in... if it's tight i'd go with it
02:04 PM JT-Shop: yup I had to press the old one out
02:04 PM JT-Shop: I can "feel" the roughness with the o-ring pick
02:05 PM Tom_L: those bores probably weren't that smooth to start with on a chassis part
02:05 PM Tom_L: what did the first one look like?
02:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> New glen went into a hold at T-20 seconds.
02:08 PM JT-Shop: new glen?
02:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> Blue orgins try at a re-usable rocket..
02:09 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://x.com/risknc/status/1988418410456449484
02:09 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> lul
02:09 PM JT-Shop: ah
02:55 PM lcnc-relay: <wrickert@> How disruptive is wifi on the raspberry pi 5 to linuxcnc?
02:56 PM lcnc-relay: <wrickert@> I was thinking of making a little keyboard thats a single button to turn the wifi on and off if its disruptive
02:58 PM roycroft: if by "disruptive" you mean adding latency, folks who have run linuxcnc on an rpi 5 have not complained about that
02:59 PM roycroft: so assuming that you're not doing things like mining bitcoin on the rpi while you're machining, that should not be much of a factor
03:05 PM rdtsc-w: I have a toggle button for both LAN and wifi, but they seem to make little difference to the operation of LinuxCNC / rpi5. Rpi4 however, is much more constrained.
03:08 PM lcnc-relay: <wrickert@> I appreciate it. Always a shame to not have a side project but better to get onto other projects.
03:09 PM rdtsc-w: side-projects tend to multiply
03:10 PM roycroft: i would not toggle the lan port on my rpi, as it's what connects the rpi to the mesa board
03:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> New Glen stuck the landing...
03:10 PM roycroft: i should think that turning that off would not be productive
03:11 PM roycroft: i need to make some feet to elevate the honeycomb in my laser cutter
03:12 PM roycroft: those are really simple parts, so i think i'll have a go at desiging them in freecad
03:12 PM roycroft: i'm assuming i can get stl files out of freecad that i can feed to my slicer
03:13 PM xxcoder: you can yeah
03:13 PM roycroft: i should probably check for updates first - i haven't touched freecad since i installed 1.0 a while back
03:14 PM roycroft: i think there have been multiple point updates since then
03:17 PM roycroft: yeah, it looks like 1.0.2 is current for macos
03:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> that is how I use freecad most of the time.. (outputing stl files to print)
03:32 PM xxcoder: same
03:36 PM roycroft: i don't want to be using freecad for some things and solidworks for others
03:36 PM roycroft: my preference will be to pick one and use it for everything
03:37 PM roycroft: i'm not sure that freecad is ready for me to move to it yet, but i don't mind doing some simple things with it to see how suitable it is
03:37 PM roycroft: the next storm is almost here
03:37 PM roycroft: the wind is picking up substantially
03:38 PM roycroft: the air is full of blowing oak leaves right now
03:40 PM xxcoder: all quiet here
03:40 PM xxcoder: light rain
03:42 PM xxcoder: turning ac on in winter is bit funny but it got pretty hot here in short sun, and humidity was very high
03:42 PM xxcoder: it hit 70%
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <fluffyalpaca@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/SuPMHXkuSHifGvNEjOXHyOyv/s4B2rLxiatA/Screenshot_from_2025-11-13_15-48-48.png
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <fluffyalpaca@> Here's a discount if anyone is buying Gecko Drives
03:49 PM roycroft: and, in cue, the power went out
03:49 PM roycroft: s/in/on/
03:50 PM roycroft: but it came back shortly
03:50 PM xxcoder: oh boy
03:55 PM roycroft: fanny is going nuts
03:56 PM roycroft: as i said, oak leaves are blowing in the wind
03:56 PM roycroft: she is sitting at the window watching them
03:56 PM roycroft: and she'll focus on a leaf and her head will jerk as she follows it blowing past the window
03:56 PM roycroft: then she'll jerk it back and pick another leaf to watch
03:56 PM roycroft: she seems quite entertained
03:57 PM xxcoder: nic. free show
03:57 PM roycroft: my neck hurts watching her jerk her head back and forth like that
03:58 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodeá´¦@> https://tenor.com/view/cat-crazy-crazyeyes-tard-nope-gif-7796652
04:00 PM * roycroft attempts the freecad update again, as the machine lost power mid-update previously
04:58 PM xxcoder: I have ac and heater on at same time. theyre fighting and only loser is humidity
04:59 PM xxcoder: I hate to do it, but when humidity is stubbornly high its only way
05:02 PM roycroft: my new (a year old now) thermostat will compensate for relative humidity
05:03 PM roycroft: there's no dehumidify functionality in the hvac system, but it knows the humidity and adjusts the heating or cooling so that it reaches a "feels like" setpoint, not the actual setpoint
05:03 PM roycroft: if i enable that feature, which i have
05:03 PM xxcoder: nice.
05:03 PM xxcoder: mines not that fancy sadly. I want to replace my ac with heatpump one, with heat and cool
05:06 PM roycroft: it's limbo season here - in between the cooling and the heating season - so i'm not using the hvac system at all, other than having the fan circulate air throughout the house for 5 minutes every hour to help equalize the temperature in every room
05:06 PM Tom_L: xxcoder, get a dehumidifier
05:06 PM xxcoder: I'm running one. its kinda having a problem
05:07 PM xxcoder: I will have to pull it apart see whats going on
05:09 PM roycroft: it's 100% humidity season
05:09 PM roycroft: that's part of the problem
05:09 PM xxcoder: yep. west wa and or fun
05:09 PM JT-Shop: dehumidifiers need regular cleaning, I have two
05:09 PM xxcoder: I hear woodworkers hate it
05:10 PM xxcoder: jt yeah im sure its clogged with dust or something
05:11 PM xxcoder: mine is desiccant dehumidifier type. not quite as good as compressor ac type, BUT works in colder weather
05:11 PM JT-Shop: mine get really nasty inside lol
05:11 PM JT-Shop: ah ok mine is the compressor type
05:12 PM Tom_L: powered are more effective
05:12 PM xxcoder: if you ever need to dry car inside, outside in winter, use desiccant dehumidifier.
05:12 PM xxcoder: though not dr. prepure one, which I own. it kinda sucks
05:12 PM JT-Shop: does it use heat to dry the desiccant
05:12 PM xxcoder: yeah
05:13 PM xxcoder: rotary ones do it in constant basis
05:13 PM xxcoder: it cant freeze or frost (well tank could I guess)
05:15 PM xxcoder: note watch out, many peltier ones band as "deseccant" its not.
05:15 PM xxcoder: "defrost cycle" is olvious flag, real deseccant ones never need defrost
05:16 PM roycroft: it doesn't matter to woodworkers, except they have to deal with the ignorance of woodworkers from back east
05:16 PM roycroft: in the east, summer is 100% humidity season
05:16 PM roycroft: here, winter is 100% humidity season
05:16 PM xxcoder: lol ok. yah I guess knowledge of local season is just what woodworker need
05:16 PM roycroft: woodworkers back east don't get that, and assume that the humidity here is the same as there
05:17 PM roycroft: i've had folks tell me i'm wrong that the humidity is highest here in the winter
05:17 PM roycroft: i'm like "but i live here - it think i know how the weather works here"
05:17 PM xxcoder: yeah had that experence recently
05:17 PM xxcoder: in discussion on why I liked my rotatary dehumifier.
05:18 PM xxcoder: I mean, it warms AND dries!
05:18 PM xxcoder: perfect for here winter
05:18 PM roycroft: in some ways, it's actually better for woodworkers in the northwet
05:18 PM roycroft: heating systems tend to lower the humidity
05:18 PM roycroft: back east, when it's already low in the winter, their heaters lower it even more
05:18 PM xxcoder: yeah.
05:18 PM roycroft: and it generally gets colder there, so the heat is on more often, for longer periods of time
05:19 PM xxcoder: if I was in east I would never buy my dehumidifer. its wrong one for most of usa
05:19 PM roycroft: as a result, they have more seasonal humidity swings that we do, generally
05:19 PM JT-Shop: the deer are looking for a snack but I've put the corn away for the night
05:19 PM roycroft: give them a snickers bar
05:19 PM JT-Shop: not sure it's good for them
05:19 PM xxcoder: leftover corn candy
05:20 PM xxcoder: it has "corn" in name right?
05:20 PM roycroft: there's a break in the wind storm
05:20 PM roycroft: i should go check the mail - i'm expecting a small parcel today
05:25 PM roycroft: not there, but the usps claim it's out for delivery
05:25 PM roycroft: and the letter carrier is always here by 3
05:26 PM roycroft: so maybe it's going on a trip back to eugene, then portland, then back to eugene, then back here
05:26 PM roycroft: as the postal service loves to do
05:27 PM roycroft: freecad is being its weird self, which i expected, but that was slowing me down
05:28 PM roycroft: and i don't have a 3d mouse for my imac, which slows things down a lot more, so i just fired up the cad workstation and will make this part in solidworks
05:28 PM roycroft: freecad will wait until i have time to just play with it, and not be under the gun to get a part made
05:29 PM roycroft: i should see if my 3d mouse even works on my imac
05:29 PM roycroft: if so, then there's hope for freecad on the mac
05:32 PM Tom_L: i use a logi M575 for my cad work
05:33 PM Tom_L: prior to wireless i also have a corded one
05:36 PM roycroft: a 3d mouse is almost completely unlike a conventional mouse
05:40 PM Tom_L: i know
05:40 PM Tom_L: they had a room full of them at the vo'tech
05:40 PM Tom_L: nobody used them
05:41 PM roycroft: for parts design it is nice but not really necessary
05:41 PM roycroft: for assemblies i think it's essential
05:41 PM roycroft: i'm not doing assemblies today
05:41 PM roycroft: but even part design benefits from one
05:41 PM roycroft: for me, at least
05:42 PM roycroft: the ease of rotating parts to expose the plane you need to work on makes a 3d mouse great
05:42 PM Tom_L: i was never able to get sw set up the same with it
05:42 PM roycroft: everyone develops a workflow that they prefer
05:42 PM roycroft: mine includes a 3d mouse
05:42 PM Tom_L: i had mine set in catia to pan zoom rotate etc without lifting
05:43 PM roycroft: i did no special setup with sw or acad
05:43 PM roycroft: i just installed the 3d connexion drivers and it worked
05:43 PM Tom_L: i just set the middle button was all
05:44 PM Tom_L: with the smaller buttons
05:44 PM roycroft: if i did not have a 3d mouse i would have to have a 3 button mouse for cad work
05:44 PM roycroft: steve jobs was a brilliant man, but he was wrong about many things
05:45 PM roycroft: and he was most wrong when he declared that a mouse should only have one button
05:45 PM * JT-Shop looks forward to driving up to The Terrace tomorrow
05:45 PM roycroft: so i'm going to get my pickup tomorrow
05:45 PM JT-Shop: what was the outcome?
05:45 PM roycroft: $2600 and change, but i'll get a 5% aaa discount on the labor
05:46 PM roycroft: so i should save about $50
05:46 PM roycroft: it should be an interesting adventure
05:46 PM roycroft: i'll have to take the bus from here to eugene, and i've never done that
05:46 PM xxcoder: not bad compared to worse case
05:46 PM roycroft: i can live with it
05:47 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
05:48 PM Unterhausen: harbor freight website is only halfway working
06:19 PM roycroft: and i'm again getting conflicting bus schedule information
06:19 PM roycroft: one source says it leaves here at 12:15, and the other says 1:15
06:19 PM roycroft: it's going to rain all day tomorrow, so i may end up standing in the rain for the 12:15 for a while, only to have to go home and do it again at 1:15
06:20 PM xxcoder: that was why I loved to bring book with me, and later nook/kindle. it makes me not care
06:20 PM roycroft: one would think that publishing an accurate schedule would be a standard part of a bus company's job
06:20 PM roycroft: if i brought a book with me it would get soaked
06:20 PM roycroft: if i brought an ipad with me it would get soaked and die
06:20 PM xxcoder: not with waterproof kindle but yeah lol
06:21 PM xxcoder: you sure differing times is not due to one being one direction and another, other?
06:21 PM roycroft: i'm sure
06:21 PM xxcoder: ok
06:21 PM roycroft: the one coming back from town is at 5:30 or so
06:21 PM Tom_L: they don't uber there much?
06:22 PM roycroft: i don't think uber operate here
06:22 PM roycroft: but a 50 mile uber drive?
06:22 PM Tom_L: probably cost alot anyway
06:22 PM roycroft: that would be expensive
06:22 PM Tom_L: i didn't know how far
06:22 PM roycroft: i'll have to take multiple buses to get to the transmission shop
06:22 PM roycroft: but in eugene they run every 10 minutes, so it doesn't matter once i get there
06:22 PM Tom_L: should be an eventful day
06:22 PM roycroft: it's just getting to eugene
06:23 PM roycroft: i'll be happy to have the pickup back
06:23 PM roycroft: and i've been meaning to check out the bus situation since i moved here, in case i ever needed it
06:23 PM roycroft: like i shall tomorrow
06:24 PM roycroft: old people ride for free in eugene, and i got an old person pass before i moved up here
06:24 PM Tom_L: should have a bicycle with a gas motor for things like this
06:24 PM roycroft: so once i get down there the buses run frequently and i pay nothing more
06:24 PM roycroft: it's $2.50 for the ride down
06:24 PM roycroft: which is actually pretty good
06:24 PM roycroft: highway 58 is 2 lanes, narrow and winding the whole way, and is about 3/4 of the trip
06:25 PM Tom_L: cheaper than driving the truck there
06:25 PM roycroft: i would not ride a bicycle on that road
06:25 PM roycroft: $5 for a round trip is cheaper than driving my car
06:25 PM roycroft: and i'll keep that in mind whenever i need to go to town and i 1. have a lot of time, and 2. don't have to carry much stuff
06:26 PM roycroft: plus, i can read or do cad work or whatever while riding the bus - i rode the bus for years to work, even when i had a car
06:26 PM roycroft: because i could get stuff done while riding, and because it was cheaper than driving
06:27 PM roycroft: it's too bad there's no wifi on the bus
06:27 PM roycroft: that would be nice
06:28 PM Tom_L: amazon gave me a $3 per item discount for waiting delivery to Saturday so they could all arrive at once
06:28 PM Tom_L: for 4 items
06:29 PM roycroft: that's nice
06:29 PM Tom_L: first time i've seen that
06:29 PM xxcoder: lol I remember those offers, then after accepting it, get it in seperate packages and faster anyway
06:29 PM roycroft: i'm not usually in a hurry, so i'll take a discount vs. getting it before i order it almost any time
06:29 PM Tom_L: i didn't mind since i can't really use one without the other
06:30 PM roycroft: one of the things i've learned in my old age is that if you're in a hurry stuff usually takes longer than if you just let it take its natural course
06:30 PM roycroft: and your blood pressure goes up
06:31 PM roycroft: the latter being perhaps the more important lesson
08:31 PM xxcoder: lol nice try ebayseller
08:31 PM xxcoder: (new track number) Hello, we have sent you a new package. Would you like to close the dispute in advance?
08:31 PM xxcoder: me: Hello, we have sent you a new package. Would you like to close the dispute in advance?
08:31 PM xxcoder: errm me: No. I will close it as soon as I have items in hand, and not before.
09:01 PM roycroft: disputes are closed after final resolution
09:01 PM roycroft: and not a nanosecond before then
09:02 PM xxcoder: yup
09:05 PM xxcoder: said items is squeze type wipers. nothing valuable
09:07 PM xxcoder: I suspect the shipping fraud was attempt to squeeze more money from order. too bad for guy 2 things happened: its about items I can buy elsewhere easily, and I rather wait month than pay for shipping when presumely I had with order already
09:17 PM roycroft: i really dislike scammers
09:18 PM xxcoder: same
09:18 PM xxcoder: I trust that seller as far as I can throw my car
11:49 PM roycroft: i don't watch reaction videos much any more - i got over that a few years ago - but teh youtube just recommended a reaction video with an ex-morman reacting to the south park morman episode
11:49 PM roycroft: and it was hilarious
11:49 PM roycroft: i wonder if she's going to go see "the book of morman" now
11:50 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbhkuHaLBJU
