09:56 AM roycroft: happy friday eve
09:57 AM Tom_L: if you're an Aussie it's Friday
09:59 AM roycroft: unless i'm from perth
09:59 AM Tom_L: i was trying to be optimistic :)
10:01 AM roycroft: after today we have five days in a row with no rain in the forecast
10:02 AM * roycroft hopes that holds true
10:36 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> The shift linkage is so warn. but - it will probably work ok.
10:37 AM JT-Shop: saturday here
10:58 AM xxcoder: one thing I miss wa state, is my joke "ever-washing-a-ton"
11:06 AM roycroft: tacoma is in the rain shadow
11:06 AM roycroft: i think you'll get a lot wetter living here
11:06 AM xxcoder: yay lol
11:06 AM roycroft: i hope you can abide by that
11:07 AM xxcoder: its fine
11:07 AM roycroft: how close are you to pdx?
11:07 AM xxcoder: uhh dunno lol
11:07 AM xxcoder: I'm in portland is all I know
11:08 AM roycroft: the really annoying thing about portland in the winter is that they get that washboard ice
11:08 AM roycroft: and don't seem to know how to deal with it
11:08 AM roycroft: pdx = portland :)
11:08 AM xxcoder: lol ok. I do want to evenually move to vancouver wa
11:08 AM xxcoder: or thereabout anyway
11:08 AM roycroft: i know it's the airport code, but it's the local term folks use to refer to portland
11:09 AM roycroft: anway, be prepared for the city to be totally dysfunctional when the tiniest amount of snow falls
11:09 AM xxcoder: so, like texas?
11:09 AM roycroft: but you don't drive that much, so as long as your pantry is stocked you should be fine
11:09 AM xxcoder: yeah I recently resupplied. I have little over month of food
11:53 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> xxcoder: *Warshing
11:53 AM xxcoder: no idea what that means
11:54 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> oh, people in Washington often said "Warshington" or "warshed" their hands
11:55 AM xxcoder: interesting. well to know accents, you do need ability to hear :D
11:55 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> regional dialect stuff
11:55 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> typical Portland snow driving:
11:55 AM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/FmCHFwRyncMQEbuklxJrECdT/wbpdvkrXFrE/image.png
11:58 AM xxcoder: fun. I have droven on snow maybe 5 times in as many years. tacoma dont see much snow
12:09 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> I rather enjoy snow driving. Lived in Michigan for 6 years after being in Washington for 10. I like to find an empty parking lot and practice drifting and controlled spins
12:11 PM Tom_L: i used to do that in my '68 vw
12:16 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> xxcoder: I lived in Kent, was fun to take a moto out to the windy roads just North of Tacoma on the East side of the Sound
12:16 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> (not on snow days, tho)
12:16 PM xxcoder: lol ok
12:17 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> point something or other, not remembering the name
12:18 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> Browns point/Dash point
02:13 PM JT-Mobile: Yo
02:35 PM JT-Mobile: Quiet in here
02:38 PM xxcoder: yep
02:59 PM * JT-Mobile heads back to the barn
03:10 PM roycroft: the password for the surveillance system at the louvre that was in place during the recent jewel heist has been revealed
03:10 PM roycroft: it was "louvre"
03:11 PM xxcoder: thats step above "password"
03:12 PM roycroft: i'd say that on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being completely insecure and 10 being absolute security, that password was a minus googleplex
03:14 PM roycroft: to make matters worse, that password was first revealed in an audit in 2014 (not a typo), and was not changed until after the heist
03:16 PM roycroft: assuming it's actually been changed now
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <wrickert@> Yeah, the cyber security discords I'm in are having an absolute field day with that one
03:24 PM roycroft: i'm generally not a fan of biometrics for authorization, but this is a case where that might be appropriate
03:25 PM roycroft: at the very least, folks who work there should be told that they are either going to use proper passwords and change them periodically, or they will have to use biometrics
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <wrickert@> I've loved the concept behind the Correct Horse Battery Staple ever since I heard it and I stand by the concept, something like that would benefit from adding biometrics to a strong password.
03:36 PM roycroft: i use a password manager and generate very long, randomish passwords that are unique to each site/function/whatever
03:37 PM roycroft: and i use a good pass phrase for the password manager
03:37 PM roycroft: it's the only thing i need to remember
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <wrickert@> Super excited to _finally_ start digging into LinuxCNC starting tonight! I've been getting the filesystem setup via ssh during work today. I'm going to install remora on a BTT octopus starting when I get home.
04:58 PM roycroft: work is done in a minute
04:58 PM roycroft: time to finish up the tablesaw project
04:58 PM xxcoder: wrick nice!
04:59 PM roycroft: i cut 18" off the extension table
04:59 PM roycroft: it fits nicely in the shop now
04:59 PM roycroft: i put the 52" fence on the saw before i had a track saw
04:59 PM roycroft: since i got the track saw i've not needed that long of a fence once, so i put the old 38" fence back on
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> got the hydraulic hoses in... what a pain. the guy must have made them just slightly longer.. They didn't need to be
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> sprayed the filter housing with some foaming degreaser.. going to see if the pressure washer works tomorrow
06:43 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
06:46 PM roycroft: this table saw project has been pretty much a one step forward, a partial to full step back kind of thing
06:47 PM roycroft: everything i fix/update leads to something else suboptimal that is best fixed now instead of kicked down the road again
06:47 PM roycroft: it is all good, though
06:47 PM roycroft: except it's taking too long
06:52 PM * roycroft thinks chinese companies should be required to hire a native english speaker to review their chosen company name and product names if they are going to export to english-speaking countries
06:52 PM roycroft: who in america would want to buy products from a company named "shittime"?
06:53 PM xxcoder: reminds me of that long dead lego ripoff company "shifty"
06:53 PM xxcoder: yes, it is shifty...
06:55 PM roycroft: then there was the famous chevy nova fiasco when they tried to sell them in mexico
06:55 PM roycroft: the chinese don't have a monopoly on this
08:07 PM _unreal_: ok going nuts trying to get a client project milled
08:07 PM _unreal_: also just discovered that my X timing belt is failing
08:08 PM _unreal_: I broke the last one by doing something stupid. had a spare. but the spare had a bit of a kink in it. well it wasnt an issue till it became an issue. now its becoming an issue. driving me crazy because its putting chatter into the parts. enough to be annoying. amazingly I'm not loosing position but damn that belt wants to try and jump so bad.
08:08 PM _unreal_: just ordered 2 next day from amazon
08:09 PM _unreal_: with any luck they will show up tomorrow
08:11 PM _unreal_: I've got one part to re-cut and then 4 parts to mill the backsides. at least ALLLLL of them the backsides are fast and easy milling running a 1/4". I've got some nice heavy duty upcut bits that dont mess around.
08:12 PM _unreal_: glad I dbl checked everything found one corner I was suposed to overcut
08:27 PM * roycroft wonders if the 10% reduction in airline flights includes logistics flights as well
08:27 PM roycroft: ups already way behind because of the crash
10:24 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
11:48 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> moin
