12:01 AM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss@> godd morning
01:09 AM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> hi
01:12 AM xxcoder: hey andypugh irc client issues?
01:19 AM Deejay: moin
01:33 AM lcnc-relay: <xxcodeᴦ@> Jacob@ this is test
01:33 AM lcnc-relay: <Jacob@> Test success
02:55 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Mornin
02:55 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Forum seems to be down again
02:57 AM rmu: works for me
02:57 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Now it works for me again
02:58 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> There must be some weird config on the host since this keeps happening, some load balancing issue
02:59 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Acts like it's running win98 on a regular basis
04:19 AM Tom_L: morning
06:07 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:43 AM rdtsc-w: From 10 weeks to 72 hours - Metal 3D print + CNC with 97% less waste https://all3dp.com/4/from-10-weeks-to-72-hours-the-power-of-hybrid-manufacturing-3d-printing-cnc-machining/
06:46 AM lcnc-relay: <Lucid Nonsense@> Those 3d printing 5 axis DMGs are cool asf, bet they come in at half a mill easy though
06:47 AM rdtsc-w: Tom, I wonder if like how we use Oshpark for PCBs, we can use a metal 3D print service to "rough-shape" parts for cheap, then just pipe our finished part to LinuxCNC and mill the rest :)
08:24 AM lcnc-relay: <gregcnc@> rdtsc-w: If you work with very difficult to machine materials
09:44 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:23 PM roycroft: i am waiting for a countersink to be delivered, which purports to be out for delivery today, and then i can finish up the first phase of my table saw refurbishment, and have that machine fully functional again (and taking up less space in the overcrowded shop)
12:24 PM roycroft: i needed the table saw yesterday to make some parts for the new power switch mount, and had to do some rather sketch wiring to accomplish that
12:25 PM roycroft: like directly wiring the motor to the power cord, and plugging the machine in to turn it on, and unplugging it to turn it off
12:25 PM roycroft: i do not like doing stuff like that
12:25 PM roycroft: too scary
12:26 PM roycroft: the rewiring is completely done now, though, including a receptacle for the power feeder that is on the load side of the magnetic switch, so that powering off the saw also powers off the power feeder
12:40 PM rdtsc-w: surprised it doesn't unfold from the wall
12:56 PM Tom_L: hydraulics lift it from the floor
01:00 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <Lyn@> I got a touch probe off Amazon (first mistake), it's a normally open switch, but the resistance when open is only 9.3k. hooking it up to the limit switch pin on my generic 5 axis parallel breakout board, it reports the signal as on as long as the probe is plugged in, and doesn't change when the probe is actually triggered. I tried tying some resistors between the pin and probe but only got constant on/off readings. I got the...
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: ... replacement unit today and it has the same behavior. has anyone experienced something like this? theoretically it should be fixable as the probe does work, like the resistance falls to 0 when touched
01:08 PM rdtsc-w: Lyn, what voltage?
01:08 PM Tom_L: touch probe for tool or 3d touch probe?
01:10 PM rdtsc-w: assuming the BoB is injecting a 5V signal, but would be helpful to confirm
01:12 PM lcnc-relay: <Lyn@> its a 3d touch probe. about 10v from the breakout board.
01:14 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/PGFUN-Anti-roll-Waterproof-Coordinate-Compatible/dp/B0B3XMFDX5
01:14 PM Tom_L: i have that one and it works just fine with linuxcnc
01:15 PM Tom_L: 5v gnd and signal
01:16 PM lcnc-relay: <Lyn@> https://a.co/d/7o85a7r
01:16 PM lcnc-relay: <Lyn@> i'm thinking i send it back and get that model. this is what i ordered
01:16 PM Tom_L: you can also find spare tips for it
01:16 PM Tom_L: same place
01:17 PM Tom_L: 6mm shank
01:17 PM Tom_L: i modified one of my holders witha 6mm reamer
01:19 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFIyd-bjOCU
01:24 PM Tom_L: yours has a ruby tip and a tungsten shaft on the tip
01:24 PM Tom_L: for hobby i'm plenty happy with mine
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lyn@> definitely dont need the extra precision, i was just hoping to spend a bit more than the basic one and get a more relible unit
01:26 PM Tom_L: i used it to test all my probe routines without a hitch
01:27 PM Tom_L: you want accuracy go get a heidenhain
01:47 PM andypugh: Just not really here.
01:48 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> andypugh: hey, thanks for all the work you're doing in LinuxCNC.....
02:21 PM lcnc-relay: <9ꌗ ❖ ravaged skies@> Hey guys, quick question: you know when you hook up a trailer to your vehicle (the standard ball type hitch), you then have to toggle this "tab" on the trailer to lock the ball in place so the trailer doesn't pop off. What is this part called?
02:21 PM lcnc-relay: <9ꌗ ❖ ravaged skies@> Mine broke and I need to buy another one and fix it
02:28 PM lcnc-relay: <9ꌗ ❖ ravaged skies@> I guess I'll just replace the entire coupler
02:28 PM jdh: Probably easier than finding the latch that fits your particular coupler.
02:39 PM NetPipe: https://i.imgur.com/GiTnhIq.jpeg
02:41 PM roycroft: those latches are usually not very useful anywa
02:41 PM roycroft: y
02:41 PM roycroft: best to replace what you have with a more robust one that won't break
03:01 PM roycroft: and even if you have a good one, it can still pop off, so make sure you have really good chains that will actually support the weight of your trailer and its load, and that they are connected properly
03:58 PM JT-Shop: why is it so hard to find the mounting dimensions of a B&S 21R707-0130 engine
04:05 PM roycroft: because they don't want you to know
04:05 PM Tom_L: ai says it's the standard pattern for that size engine
04:05 PM roycroft: they want you to take it to one of their authorized repair shops for installation
04:06 PM * Tom_L tries to figure out why double tap doesn't launch a program
04:06 PM roycroft: a shop who pay them lots of money to train their technicians
04:06 PM roycroft: and ai is a liar much, if not most, of the time :)
04:11 PM JT-Shop: actually ai is pretty good for programming questions
04:12 PM roycroft: that's the kind of thing one would expect it to be best at
04:13 PM roycroft: ask it what your wife would like for her birthday
04:13 PM roycroft: and get what it suggests
04:13 PM roycroft: you'll be in for a surprise on her birthday
04:14 PM xxcoder: some open source groups is setting policy on ai gen pulls, because so many is nonsense
04:15 PM roycroft: i was watching a video the other day - one of the legal ones that is entertaining
04:15 PM roycroft: an attorney got held in contempt for submitting ai-generated documents to the judge that were nonsense
04:16 PM roycroft: he challenged the comptempt ruling, and submitted a bunch of ai-generated paperwork to substantiate the challenge
04:16 PM xxcoder: yep
04:16 PM roycroft: the judge did not take kindly to that
04:16 PM Tom_L: Briggs & Stratton provides engine mounting dimensions and specifications in their official
04:16 PM Tom_L: Replacement Engine Catalogs and specific engine specification sheets, which are available as free PDF downloads from their support website.
04:17 PM JT-Shop: the only thing I've found is the over all dimensions
04:17 PM roycroft: i'm not saying ai is a bad thing per se
04:17 PM roycroft: but it needs to be kept in perspective
04:17 PM xxcoder: its ok if you dont simply trust it
04:18 PM xxcoder: review, test
04:18 PM roycroft: yes, it's a research tool
04:18 PM roycroft: not a final product
04:19 PM JT-Shop: I finally found it I just had to ask a different way
04:19 PM roycroft: i'll be happy when work is over for the day
04:19 PM roycroft: it's been another brutal work day
04:20 PM roycroft: and i got the front rail permanently mounted on the table saw at lunch
04:20 PM roycroft: right after work i'll do the back rail and then the last few things to be done with it
04:29 PM Tom_L: wading thru the interweb without hip waders is brutal
04:49 PM xxcoder: hmm anyone know any wifi camera that arent cloud based
04:49 PM xxcoder: and can act as doorbell too
04:49 PM xxcoder: (not audio, but notification at pc)
04:51 PM roycroft: you might ask on #homeassistant - while that channel is mostly about that software, the folks there tend to know a lot about security and automation devices, and are generally internet-wary
04:52 PM roycroft: and one of the main people there lives in eugene
04:52 PM xxcoder: thanks. will check out
04:52 PM roycroft: introduce yourself as an oregonian and he'll probably be nice to you :)
04:52 PM xxcoder: lol ok
04:53 PM * roycroft wants to get the shop work done soon so he can monitor election returns tonight
05:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> woot, ELS is working again on the lathe. At least, so far, so good- will recheck tomorrow and make sure it still works, since the issue was intermittent
05:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/HIBvoXIbmNOrKBqSpSFEAjjA/05gH6S_ESUE/new_encoder_for_ELS.JPG

05:26 PM xxcoder: way to go!
05:26 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> all the printed stuff transferred right over
05:26 PM xxcoder: 3d printed stuff has no backlash?
05:27 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> it has a little, but I think for most intents and purposes, it disappears relative to the movement in the leadscrew
05:27 PM xxcoder: if error is tiny enough it dont matter I guess
05:28 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> the encoder is reading spindle rpms, and a hybrid servo drives the leadscrew at various feeds and threads
05:28 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> the original setup uses a bunch of spur gears in a gear train, so I expect the buildup of gear lashes is more on the original
05:29 PM xxcoder: makes sense
05:30 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> just in time for me to be able to bore out a 4wd socket to remove a nut on the bull gear assembly for the mill. Found one tooth on the bull gear with a big divot in it
05:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> threading is always one direction.. backlash doesn't really matter
05:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> as long as there is enough leadin to take it up - which usually isn't a probmel
05:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> problem
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> ugh. I hate netsutie
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> netsuit
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> ah, the "scream test" 😄
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> i've done that many times
06:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> certianly partially my fault.. I got the email a month or 2 ago that they were doing this - but I read the time frame as - over night. not 2 days
06:20 PM xxcoder: sorry skunk bridge was being fixed and missed one longer sentance from you skunks lol (only one missing)
06:21 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> yep, microsoft did this recently for some of the old co-existance exchange stuff..... folks didn't read, are freaking out, it's amazing
06:21 PM xxcoder: turboss found why, and fixed it so it uses username in case if someone had never set display name, so its blank
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss@> 👍
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> no-one complaining on reddit - so I guess I am the only one that has waited this long to convert
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> i mean, it's netsuite, you might be the only one left using it 🤣
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> lol
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> maybe
07:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> The forklift runs ok now - but there is a rather large hydraulic leak I need to find
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> > .< reminding me of a forklift at one place I worked where all the old timers knew not to run the rack all the way up. New guys got to find out when they got a shower
07:24 PM xxcoder: hey free shower is good right? ;)
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> keeping the employees well lubricated
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> nice. It gets dark too soon.. I turned my phone light on and saw in the belly pan of the forklift - a ton of milky fluid.
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> the lift goes down way way too fast.
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <Lesliet@> hopefully the leak is pretty obvious in daylight
07:27 PM xxcoder: if coolant glows in blacklight, mighht be a way
07:28 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:41 PM roycroft: if it gets a geiger counter all hot and bothered, it's even more obvious in daylight or darkness
07:47 PM Tom_L: plane down in Louisville
07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> uh oh'
07:47 PM xxcoder: is that the ups one?
07:48 PM Tom_L: yes
07:48 PM Tom_L: don't expect your package to be on time
07:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> I got an email from starlink that I can get a mini dish for free - and $5 a month for standby... they want you to use it for traveling..
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> it is tempting but I don't travel
07:49 PM Tom_L: put it in the treehouse
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks@> too many tree's - and the treehouse is close to wifi - and really close to fiber
07:50 PM roycroft: the ups plane was headed to honolulu
07:50 PM roycroft: and since it's ups, not the usps, it's likely that it was full of stuff for delivery to hawaii
07:50 PM Tom_L: i think i'm finally gonna get my fiber on the 15th
07:52 PM Tom_L: i wonder if one or more of their containers shifted on takeoff
07:52 PM roycroft: i read that an eyewitness had video of an engine on fire prior to takeoff
07:52 PM Tom_L: that happened here a few years ago on a fully loaded test flight of a new plane
07:53 PM Tom_L: hmm
07:53 PM roycroft: but i've only read a very little bit about it
07:53 PM Tom_L: that's more than me
07:53 PM Tom_L: i just saw a pic and where it was
07:53 PM roycroft: so i don't know any real details
07:54 PM Tom_L: we also had a prop plane hit a simulator building of all things
07:55 PM Tom_L: McDonnell-Douglas... at least boeing is off the hook this time
07:58 PM xxcoder: tom thankfully none of mine is coming via ups
08:29 PM roycroft: i'm just happy that usps delivered my countersink on time (for once) so i could finish installing my table saw fence today
08:30 PM roycroft: every once in a while they actually perform competently
11:09 PM lcnc-relay: <Elian.s@> Is it possible to control my rs485 hy vfd from the 9 pin serial port on my motherboard? Dell optiplex 5040 running Debian 12 LinuxCNC.
11:42 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> moin moin
11:43 PM lcnc-relay: <Olli (RIO)@> Elian.s@: yes, you need an adapter to rs485
