01:09 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
02:08 AM Deejay: moin
04:22 AM Tom_L: morning
06:44 AM rdtsc-w: xxcoder, redboro_ broken wiring is quite common - very handy to have a complete (and legible) print for the machine. have seen customer's cabinets with changed and rewired parts with no print updates - "Jim knows where wire 81 goes... but he retired last year" nightmare to service
07:08 AM JT-Cave: I had a service tech demand a wiring diagram to diagnose a single hyd solenoid
07:08 AM JT-Cave: but there is only 2 wires... not hard to trace
07:09 AM JT-Cave: he kept saying it was a plc problem but in the end the pump was bad
07:43 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> Hello, I'm setting up the Z homing. I set the ferror to 100000. My Z home switch is at the end of the travel (the longest point from the spindle head). When homing, my Z axis is going in the good direction, on the screen the Z is increasing (normal to me as we are moving from the spindle) but as soon as I hit the the switch, I get a following error. Any idea why?
08:19 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> maybe HOME_LATCH_VEL or HOME_FINAL_VEL to height ?
09:30 AM xxcoder: rdtsc-w: indeed. all wires have bend rating, if its designed to even slightly bend often. if its regular wire assume 100,000 bends or so.
09:31 AM xxcoder: if machine is used, then I guess its best idea to confirm correct wiring
09:38 AM pcw_at_home1: <vibram@> if you are trying to mask following errors for testing, you need to increase min_ferror also.
12:14 PM JT-Shop: should I ship to Argentina?
12:16 PM pcw_at_home1: well they have money now...
12:17 PM JT-Shop: did they run out?
12:18 PM pcw_at_home1: > 30% inflation rate
12:21 PM JT-Shop: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1391766/average-inflation-rate-argentina/
12:22 PM JT-Shop: nap time
12:25 PM pcw_at_home1: Yow 214% in 2024
12:25 PM pcw_at_home1: 219%
12:40 PM roycroft: if they run out dear leader will send them more
12:41 PM roycroft: i would only ship there if i got the money up front and was sure there were no customs issues
12:41 PM roycroft: argentina has a long history of triple- and quadruple-digit inflation
12:44 PM roycroft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Argentina#/media/File:Argentina_Inflation.webp
12:47 PM roycroft: there were times in the 80s where people would insist on paying their bill at a restaurant as they ordered, as the price would sometimes increase mid-meal
12:49 PM roycroft: it's almost as bad as germany in the weimar republic
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <die_limonade@> was cheaper to burn your money, instead of buying firewood with it
12:54 PM roycroft: the germans were using banknotes as wallpaper during the '20s
12:55 PM xxcoder: I remember those picture with kids playing with money blocks
12:56 PM roycroft: hungary had the worst hyperinflation in history right after the war
12:56 PM roycroft: prices were doubling every 15 hours
12:56 PM roycroft: 4*10^16 monthly inflation
02:07 PM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> pcw_at_home1: OK thank you I will try but my PID tuning seems to be OK so my ferror is not huge...
02:09 PM pcw_at_home1: If you can avoid triggering a following error fault you can plot the actual following error to diagnose the issue.
03:10 PM xxcoder: wow interesting machinist trick to square all sides. https://youtu.be/AUhvdmYmo1k
03:11 PM xxcoder: so simple yet brilliant. my mind is blown
03:19 PM Tom_L: boys made some of those dice at votech
03:19 PM roycroft: so yet another youtuber has discovered the only way to make money with a shaper
03:20 PM xxcoder: yup. the trick I talked about though was done on mill, but I'm sure shaper can do same trick
03:20 PM Tom_L: he's a little too annoying for me to watch the whole thing
03:21 PM xxcoder: yeah? in what way?
03:22 PM xxcoder: hmm hes running it much faster than blondihack did, so I wonder if hes run it too fast, or she ran it too slow
03:29 PM JT-Shop: what time is the trick?
03:29 PM xxcoder: ill find it again when finished with video. pretty soon
03:29 PM Tom_L: wake me up when you do...
03:29 PM Tom_L: time for a nap
03:31 PM xxcoder: Tom_L: jt is 11:53
03:31 PM xxcoder: time
03:33 PM Tom_L: thanks
03:33 PM xxcoder: welcome
03:40 PM JT-Shop: that's how I square stock
03:41 PM JT-Shop: it's not new
03:41 PM xxcoder: it was to me lol
03:41 PM xxcoder: nor did he say it was new, he talked about old tricks being lost
03:41 PM JT-Shop: that could be the case for sure
03:42 PM xxcoder: I never really squared stock besides couple times to make tap blocks as my internship
03:42 PM JT-Shop: I don't tip it over like he did
03:42 PM xxcoder: I guess slight angle error would do it anyway
03:42 PM JT-Shop: if you don't square a lot of stock you don't figure out the tricks
03:43 PM xxcoder: yeah that makes sense. cnc machinist, we just get cut blocks and we put in fixture and run program
03:44 PM JT-Shop: when I square the first narrow edge I just look for a clean area all the way across
03:46 PM JT-Shop: it did take me a bit to figure out how to square a block LOL
03:46 PM xxcoder: lol I suppose it would have taken me a bit too. I was taught however
03:47 PM JT-Shop: I'm self taught
03:47 PM xxcoder: thats cool. you bought machines then learned on them or?
03:47 PM JT-Shop: pretty much
03:48 PM JT-Shop: figure it out as I go
03:48 PM xxcoder: I still find it funny that I was working towards exactly that
03:48 PM xxcoder: then I got hired as cnc machinist
03:48 PM xxcoder: mini router
03:48 PM xxcoder: the very one that roy has now lol
03:49 PM JT-Shop: a buddy that used to work in a machine shop showed me a way to measure depth with calipers that I never had figured out
03:49 PM JT-Shop: I just saw him doing it and asked about it and he said that's how he was taught to do it
03:50 PM xxcoder: it took me a little bit to learn how to reliable measyure with calipers
03:50 PM xxcoder: using 123 block
03:50 PM xxcoder: push too hard, or slight angle and its wrong
03:50 PM JT-Shop: yup
03:51 PM xxcoder: took me a day or two, then it was braindead simple
03:52 PM JT-Shop: I just figured out I have storage for about 6 cords of firewood
03:52 PM JT-Shop: and the deer are here looking for dinner
03:54 PM JT-Shop: just my luck one universal joint cap is stuck
03:55 PM JT-Shop: I sprayed it with break free so we'll see
04:51 PM roycroft: well bummer
04:51 PM roycroft: i just found out from 3m that while they still make the original pps system, they no longer make adapters for other spray guns
04:52 PM roycroft: their pps2 system has adapters, but they don't make the tiny paint cup for that system
04:52 PM roycroft: in case any of you use sprayers and are not familiar with it, the 3m pps system is awesome
04:52 PM roycroft: it has pressurized spray cups that can fit almost any spray gun
04:53 PM roycroft: and the cups have liners, so you don't have to clean the cup when you're done - just the internals of the spray gun
04:53 PM roycroft: and since it's pressurized, you can spray in any orientation, including upside-down, without having to use an external paint pot
04:55 PM roycroft: but with the new system all they have is midi (13oz/385ml) and large (28oz/828ml)
04:56 PM roycroft: the original system also had a detail cup (6oz/175ml) with liners both that size and also 3oz/89ml
04:57 PM roycroft: the liners have filter built in so you don't have to pre-filter your paint
04:57 PM roycroft: or whatever you're sprayin
04:57 PM roycroft: g
04:57 PM roycroft: and they also have air-tight caps, so if you need to switch back and forth during a job you can easily do so
04:58 PM JT-Shop: hmm we are having wings but have not decided how to cook them
04:58 PM JT-Shop: crispy is best for me
04:59 PM roycroft: i'd grill them with a grill press on top of them so they don't fly away
04:59 PM JT-Shop: we have a new 8.5" grill press but it's for bacon
05:00 PM * roycroft is having pizza for dinner and will likely just bake it
05:01 PM roycroft: it's the weekend!
05:01 PM * JT-Shop likes the new pizza dough recipe
05:02 PM roycroft: i'm lazy these days and get pre-made dough from a bakery in eugene
05:02 PM roycroft: making dough from scratch for just one pizza is too much work
05:02 PM JT-Shop: nothing like that here
05:02 PM roycroft: perhaps some day i'll get back to making a batch big enough for 4 pizzas and freezing three of the doughballs
05:03 PM roycroft: once i ever get totally moved in
05:03 PM roycroft: half my kitchen gear is still in storage
05:03 PM roycroft: and i don't have anywhere to hang my pots/pans rack, so all that stuff is stashed in a cabinet
05:04 PM roycroft: i've been pretty low key on cooking since i moved, due to the kitchen being in somewhat of a shables
05:04 PM roycroft: shambles
05:05 PM JT-Shop: my machine shop is still in a bit of a state but making progress
05:06 PM JT-Shop: damn u joint cup is not moving
05:17 PM Tom_L: heat
05:17 PM Tom_L: bigger hammer
05:18 PM Tom_L: more determination
05:19 PM Tom_L: doesn't have a missed c clip holding it in does it?
05:20 PM Tom_L: i'm sure you're well beyond forgetting those
05:20 PM JT-Shop: clips are out... just going slow and careful
05:23 PM JT-Shop: the main thing is to not bend the ears
05:23 PM Tom_L: absolutely
05:26 PM JT-Shop: once it moves a thou it's all over with
05:34 PM JT-Shop: I think I'll wait till the morning to try and move it
05:34 PM Tom_L: rust can have a strong grip
05:35 PM JT-Shop: the end close to the diff had a bit of oil on it
05:35 PM JT-Shop: so the seal is likely a bit worn
05:37 PM Tom_L: looks like you're due for an update
05:38 PM Tom_L: been busy today
05:38 PM JT-Shop: update?
05:38 PM Tom_L: flex
05:38 PM Tom_L: i generally check in the morning but didn't have a chance today
05:39 PM JT-Shop: still trying to sort out a hal led button
05:47 PM Tom_L: PR #380
06:01 PM Tom_L: what viewer do you use for png? this pi install has none
06:02 PM Tom_L: i keep forgetting to look when i'm in the amd64
06:23 PM * roycroft is about to start experimenting with paste wax and hard wax formulas
06:23 PM roycroft: if anyone is interested, when i get some that i like i'd love to send out samples for feedback
06:24 PM roycroft: my new pid-based temperature controller is fully functional now, and the heated stir plate is ready, and i have all the ingredients to get started
06:40 PM xxcoder: samples of what?
06:42 PM Tom_L: paste wax
06:43 PM xxcoder: ahh ok. whats it used for?
06:43 PM Tom_L: we used to get rubbing oil by the gallon
06:43 PM Tom_L: sheen on finished wood
06:44 PM xxcoder: ahh cool. not something I can test though
06:45 PM Tom_L: we used to get alot of our stuff from star chemical in dallas but they're not there now
07:00 PM xxcoder: I love to beta test stuff, but sadly wood coating is not somrthing i can test
07:06 PM roycroft: i'm going to be making three types
07:06 PM roycroft: a hard wax with resin, similar to alfie shine, which is a wonderful wax but has been unavailable in this country since the tariffs started
07:06 PM roycroft: a soft wax that will fully cure (the hard wax will as well) for general furniture polishing
07:07 PM roycroft: and a soft wax that does not fully cure for coating machinery table, etc.
07:07 PM roycroft: johnson's furnture wax is also discontinued, and folks don't seem to like the alternatives
07:07 PM roycroft: i'll be making mine with zero vocs
07:07 PM roycroft: and zero metal hardeners
07:07 PM xxcoder: hopefully you will be successful on those, and sell well
07:07 PM roycroft: we'll see
07:08 PM roycroft: at the very least i'll have that i like for my own use
07:08 PM roycroft: but i'd like to market it as well
07:08 PM roycroft: it could be some good side income while i'm building the other parts of my businesses
07:08 PM roycroft: i'm all set up to make the first test batch now, so i'll be off to do that for a bit
07:09 PM roycroft: it will just be a couple small tins at first, but when i get something i like i'll make a batch of 50 or so tins
07:09 PM roycroft: and that's when i'll be sending it out to testers
07:09 PM xxcoder: nice. metal containers is more recyclable
07:09 PM xxcoder: wonder if you could have return for reuse small discount
07:13 PM Tom_L: we used to get buffing compound for those 15" buffing wheels from a company in NY
08:16 PM roycroft: so what i've learned so far is that:
08:17 PM roycroft: 1. the gum resins i'm using take a lot longer to dissolve in oil than they do in solvents
08:18 PM roycroft: i have a mortar and pestle for resins, but it's in a box in storage somewhere, and i've not been able to locate it. i don't want to use a kitchen one for resins
08:19 PM roycroft: 2. calibrating a pid controller with water at my setpoint does not translate well to heating oil to the same set point
08:19 PM roycroft: it's overrunning by as much as 15c
08:19 PM xxcoder: ah oil can hold more heat so it makes sense
08:19 PM roycroft: which is mostly ok, since i am using a fairly low set point for this first experiment
08:20 PM roycroft: but i'll need to recalibrate with oil before i proceed further
08:20 PM roycroft: since the chunks of resin are taking so long to dissolve, i'm on my second run of the program
08:20 PM roycroft: i'm sure that once i'm able to grind the resins up before adding them they will dissolve faster
08:21 PM roycroft: and i think this batch will be at least somewhat successful
08:21 PM roycroft: but the proof will be when i apply it and buff it out and test its durability
08:22 PM roycroft: i may not be using enough resin right now - i went pretty conservative on that, both since it's expensive and since i don't have much
08:22 PM roycroft: i'm using up some resins i've had for years
08:22 PM roycroft: it smells like alfie shine already though :)
08:23 PM roycroft: the types of resins and the quantity of resins seem to be the biggest held secrets of the old wax/varnish makers
08:23 PM roycroft: if i get even close to what i'm aiming for on this first go i'll be delighted
08:24 PM roycroft: i'm anticipating a dozen or more rounds before i get what i want
08:24 PM xxcoder: ratio probably is critical too. so I guess you would have range
08:24 PM roycroft: yes
08:24 PM roycroft: and most of the old formulas are volumetric, which is very unreliable
08:25 PM roycroft: i'm doing it all by weight
08:25 PM roycroft: i scoop the stuff up volumetrically, then weigh it and record the weight
08:26 PM roycroft: the nice thing about this is that if i don't like what i made, i can melt the rest down and adjust the forumla and try again
08:42 PM Tom_L: turns into a paste?
08:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am marked safe from trick or treat.
08:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Must have walked 2 miles
08:43 PM Tom_L: got enough to rot everybody's teeth out?
08:43 PM xxcoder: yeah I wouldnt know if anyone knocked
08:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Both kids had a great time - the oldest went off with her friends
08:43 PM Tom_L: i stayed in due to my procedure but the mrs is out with the nieces
08:44 PM Tom_L: and others
08:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Everyone loved Sully's costume. He said it was surprising comfortable l.
08:45 PM Tom_L: cool
08:45 PM roycroft: nobody showed up here again
08:45 PM roycroft: but i expected that
08:45 PM roycroft: i live at the end of a cul-du-sac
08:45 PM Tom_L: do you live next to the Adam's family?
08:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/OYiKCQXQtzWVyxeRGsrPnNxg/ktHpc79IssQ/PXL_20251031_223727322.jpg
08:45 PM roycroft: and most of my neighbors are older than me
08:45 PM xxcoder: skunk nice
08:46 PM roycroft: so the behavior in the beaker is interesting, but not in a good way
08:46 PM roycroft: the resin chunks are kind of like panning gold
08:46 PM roycroft: as the oil spins around the chunks settle on the outer rim of the beaker
08:46 PM roycroft: and don't circulate
08:46 PM Tom_L: reminds me of melting animal glue
08:46 PM roycroft: which means taking a lot longer to dissolve
08:47 PM roycroft: i really need to either find my resin mortar and pestle or buy a new one before i experiment further
08:47 PM roycroft: i'm on the third heat cycle now
08:47 PM roycroft: all the wax is in, and everything is fine except for the undissolved resins
08:48 PM roycroft: and i seriously doubt i'm at saturation point, as i've only added 1.5% resin by weight
08:48 PM roycroft: which i think is probably not enough, but it's where i wanted to start
08:48 PM roycroft: i'm thinking 5% might be the right number in the end
08:49 PM * roycroft is not a big halloween person, but thinks he might watch rhps tonight
08:49 PM roycroft: it's been a few years since i've watched that
08:49 PM roycroft: it used to be a halloween tradition
08:50 PM roycroft: back when i lived in bellingham, i had some friends in seattle who went every week in costume to the theatrical showing of rhps
08:50 PM roycroft: i went with them a few times - it was pretty fun
08:51 PM roycroft: i never went in costume, though, as i both wasn't into it that much, and would have had a hard time picking a character
08:51 PM roycroft: and when i say i wasn't into it that much, i had a great time every show i went to
08:52 PM Tom_L: they used to play that at the historic Orpheum theater here
08:52 PM roycroft: but it's not something i would ever be interested in doing every friday night, like my friends did
08:52 PM roycroft: especially since it did not play in bellingham every week, and it would be an hour and a half drive each way to go see it
08:53 PM Tom_L: The Orpheum Theatre, opened on September 4, 1922
08:53 PM * roycroft should start on the pizza while the wax is cooking
08:54 PM Tom_L: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-e&q=Orpheum+theater#lpg=cid:CgIgAQ%3D%3D,ik:CAoSLEFGMVFpcFBQUEpDbTVDb1FJc1ZmNmJJSFh4SHpIVWYtVk82SkxWTDhvQm9G
08:55 PM fluffywolf: only two of us showed up to work in costumes today.
08:57 PM roycroft: nice
08:57 PM roycroft: i like old venues like that
08:57 PM fluffywolf: I saw a video of In This Moment playing there.
08:57 PM roycroft: your google link is to orpheums all over the country, though
08:57 PM roycroft: wichitaorpheum.com is where i think you meant to link
08:58 PM fluffywolf: oh, in this moment might have been a different orpheum, them.
08:59 PM roycroft: https://mcdonaldtheatre.com
08:59 PM roycroft: we have the mcdonald theatre in eugene
09:00 PM roycroft: it dates to 1925
09:00 PM roycroft: i can't count how many concerts i've been to there
09:00 PM Tom_L: i was more interested in the historical pics than the venu
09:00 PM roycroft: wonderful venue
09:00 PM fluffywolf: we have no real music venues here. only bars and school gyms.
09:01 PM fluffywolf: there was a theater, but it's actually a theater lounge, which is a fancy way of saying bar.
09:01 PM roycroft: and yeah, you can tell that the mcdonald in eugene
09:01 PM roycroft: "dead-o-ween" is tonight
09:01 PM roycroft: and next month is "steely dead"
09:02 PM Tom_L: https://www.crownuptown.com/
09:02 PM roycroft: those of you not from around here may not know that the grateful dead and the merry pranksters were really tight
09:02 PM roycroft: ken kesey (one flew over the cuckoo's nest) was a merry prankster
09:03 PM roycroft: and he is from springfield, right next door to eugeen
09:03 PM roycroft: his family business, the springfield dairy, were in financial trouble in the early '70s
09:03 PM roycroft: the dead played a benefit concert for the creamery at the country fair site and saved it
09:03 PM fluffywolf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9V6_JaLqBo wow, that's a terrible cellphone video. lol. (in this moment at one of the places named orpheum)
09:04 PM roycroft: later on, the dead played the country fair site to help the fair pay for its land
09:04 PM Tom_L: https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/10948
09:04 PM Tom_L: they finally tore the crest down
09:04 PM roycroft: chez ray, the private chef for the dead, had a booth at the country fair until he passed a few years ago
09:04 PM roycroft: and chez ray's is still there, but without him
09:05 PM roycroft: the grateful dead/eugene connection is very deep and tightly woven
09:06 PM Tom_L: been to all those i linked
09:07 PM * roycroft has been to the orpheum theatre in vancouver, bc
09:07 PM roycroft: many times, in fact
09:07 PM roycroft: another great old concert venue
09:08 PM xxcoder: talking about old venues, I remember the old art deco treate in vancouver wa. we had weekly deaf movie night there, and tickets was $3
09:08 PM roycroft: offhand, i remember going there to see traffic, jethro tull, neil young, and neko case
09:08 PM roycroft: and i know i've seen a few other shows there
09:09 PM xxcoder: then new owner I guess, jacked price up to $7, which is ricious for fairly unconfortable chairs and shallow slope movie place. good ones was 9 dollar then
09:09 PM xxcoder: it was to nobody surpise that caption weekly stopped then, as better places had monthly captioned movies
09:10 PM Tom_L: i remember watching the old silent movies as a kid
09:10 PM * Tom_L heads up to relax
09:10 PM xxcoder: havent went to movies since covid year
09:12 PM xxcoder: surpise! its still up. https://www.visitvancouverwa.com/things-to-do/arts-and-entertainment/kiggins-theatre/
09:12 PM xxcoder: inside is quite art deco look, which I liked
09:16 PM fluffywolf: I've never been a movie person. Only times I've been to a movie was when someone dragged me along.
09:18 PM pcw_at_home1: I gave up on movies a couple years ago, just can't stand being forced to watch 30 minutes of previews
09:19 PM fluffywolf: followed by 90 minutes of drivel.
09:20 PM xxcoder: lol I used to smuggle in a ice water bottle
09:21 PM xxcoder: they usually dont care, though sometimes I also bring in candies because hoky crap so expensive even last time I went, im sure its worse now
09:32 PM xxcoder: remembered about me and my friend joking about "pulling a han solo"
09:59 PM roycroft: well i guess the first batch of wax is not going to be what i wanted
10:00 PM roycroft: the resin did not dissolve well
10:00 PM roycroft: but the ratios of the waxes, and the wax to oil ratio, will be informative
10:25 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder@> wheee looks like it will never stop raining
10:25 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcoder@> https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/YdYOJXWNLkBudNOAOyiVbGjC/Ujw5r9PdS5Q/mashup-2025-10-17T19-15-07Z-75335d.png
10:31 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
10:31 PM roycroft: it's not raining again here yet
10:31 PM roycroft: but it probably will later tonight or tomorrow
10:31 PM roycroft: and it will stop
10:31 PM roycroft: at least by some time in may or june
10:58 PM lcnc-relay: <john.obrien@> hey if I found a typo in the LinuxCNC documentation how do I fix it?
11:16 PM roycroft: with a sharpie
11:16 PM roycroft: and maybe some white-out
11:19 PM xxcoder: I guess actual answer would be to edit file in git and commit it
11:24 PM lcnc-relay: <john.obrien@> ok. Just to make sure I understand, documentation changes are then like code changes, in that I clone the git repo, make my changes, and then submit a pull request to potentially have them merged in. Is that correct?
11:24 PM roycroft: that requires commit access
11:24 PM xxcoder: I remember something about making pull request
11:24 PM xxcoder: I did it years ago, to add 3axis_tutorial

11:25 PM roycroft: so the wax is cool now, and the consistency is almost exactly what i want
11:25 PM roycroft: but it cracked while cooling
11:26 PM roycroft: i guess i need to let it cool more before pouring it into the tins
11:26 PM roycroft: probably to just above when it starts gelling
11:26 PM roycroft: i can test with it as is, though
11:41 PM xxcoder: cracky dont sound like big deal, if it works perfectly when applied properly
