#linuxcnc Calendar

04:53 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:26 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> I'm currently trying to support a Mesa card configuration with HM2 firmware in the Rio Flow GUI. This stuff is really awful. I'm so glad I have Rio and can configure all the pins individually. 😂
10:49 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> andypugh@: thanks for the release.....
11:24 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> hmm, how can i flash a mesa-card using openFPGALoader ?
11:28 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> ok ok, works
11:46 AM roycroft: it's chilly this morning, but at least the rain has stopped for now
11:49 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> sposed to get a break til tomorrow, I think?
11:49 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> will heat up the shop for a while, and try to get more paintwork done, today
11:53 AM rdtsc-w: did you blast those parts? looked really clean
11:54 AM roycroft: wednesday here
11:54 AM roycroft: and i need to go turn the heater on in the shop shortly, so i can do some work at lunch time
11:54 AM roycroft: i got my old table saw fence removed yesterday, and the wood extension table removed
11:55 AM roycroft: the cast iron extension table that i'm going to mount the power feeder to, as well
11:56 AM roycroft: but when i had that all torn apart i decided it was a good time to relocate the power switch, which has always been inconveniently recessed so that's hard to reach (especially important in an e-stop situation)
11:56 AM roycroft: and i found that the switch was in really bad shape
11:56 AM roycroft: so i ordered a replacement
11:56 AM xxcoder: nothing like fixing problems on finding more problems
11:56 AM roycroft: another case of a relatively small project turning into a big one
11:56 AM roycroft: it will be good in the end though
11:57 AM roycroft: i'm adding a receptacle for the power feeder, so it will be protected by the table saw switch
11:57 AM roycroft: the switch is magentic, so the saw won't turn on automatically after a power outage
11:57 AM roycroft: so it's important to operate the power feeder the same way
11:58 AM roycroft: and i'm going to make a big shutoff paddle for the new switch, so i can kill power with my knee
12:00 PM roycroft: i almost started thinking about completely disassembling the table saw, fixing up some other minor problems, sealing it up so that extraction works better, and repainting the whole thing
12:00 PM roycroft: but decided that's a next year project
12:01 PM xxcoder: too many irons in fire is bad]
12:02 PM roycroft: yeah
12:02 PM roycroft: but on the other hand, procrastinating is also bad
12:03 PM roycroft: on the other other hand, all these little side projects are detracting from my roof rebuild, so i'm in essence procrastinating on that project
12:03 PM xxcoder: sure though how bad depends on what. broken safety thing? prompt. if its something that wont affect its functionality for while eh
12:03 PM roycroft: right
12:04 PM roycroft: the stuff i'm doing now will have immediate benefits
12:04 PM roycroft: and the stuff i want to do later is not safety-related nor will it affect productivity much
12:05 PM roycroft: i hate the fence that was on the saw - i loved my vega fence on my old saw, but the vega i got for this one is crap
12:05 PM roycroft: they've really gone downhill
12:05 PM roycroft: so putting the biesemeyer back on is going to be a great help
12:05 PM roycroft: also, my vega ( the one i just took off) is 52", while the biesemeyer is 38"
12:06 PM roycroft: since i have a track saw now, i don't need that extra rip capability
12:06 PM roycroft: and i really could use that 14" of real estate
12:06 PM roycroft: the saw just doesn't fit well in my new shop with that long fence
12:18 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> rdtsc-w: immersed painted parts in Berryman's chem dip for 24 hours, and used a couple of cans of brake clean to get all the residue off.
12:18 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> stuff works well for removing old paint and bondo
12:18 PM rdtsc-w: that stuff works fantastic; looks bead-blasted or something
12:19 PM rdtsc-w: thanks for the release Andy :)
12:20 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> down side is it smells terrible, and when you work with it, the smell gets in your clothes. Also not something you want even a little of on your skin.
12:25 PM Tom_L: my kid used to get stopped by the dog at the mall all the time because he worked around coolant
12:25 PM rdtsc-w: sounds like a "cool" kid :)
12:26 PM Tom_L: he's not around it as much now since he took the prorammer job
12:26 PM xxcoder: I wanted to pivot into programming job evenually because its easier on back lol
12:26 PM xxcoder: but ultimately well laid off lol
12:27 PM Tom_L: pays better too
12:27 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> malls have canine security now?
12:27 PM Tom_L: they want him to learn to program the mill turn
12:27 PM xxcoder: I didnt care about pay too much, but my back was going worse and worse
12:27 PM Tom_L: like 8-9 axis?
12:28 PM xxcoder: I barely could walk across shop before I discovered cbd
12:28 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> sucks that you gotta deal with that
12:28 PM Tom_L: lesliet, i missed the update pics
12:29 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> hang on
12:29 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> https://imgur.com/gallery/progress-on-r2e4-mill-project-quill-housing-assembly-0Iys9lx
12:30 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> today is probably just painting and no assembly, got lots more parts to clean and paint, but only so much Berrymans
12:30 PM Tom_L: that's alot of chem dip
12:30 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> so I have to cycle parts through
12:31 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I got the 5 gallon bucket, and the big stainless pans fit the belt housings pretty well
12:31 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> just waiting on a 4 minute print so I can head out
12:31 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> (takes the machine about 5 minutes to get to temps)
01:47 PM justache- is now known as justache
01:47 PM justache is now known as justache_
01:48 PM justache_ is now known as justache
02:01 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:08 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> so I was curious, and looked to see if I could buy more of that cleaner, and the EPA banned it around January
03:09 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> there's a new non-chlorinated version out, but no idea if it's anywhere near as effective
03:39 PM roycroft: if i went to a place with canine security the only thing i would do is turn around and leave as quickly as possible
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> it has been quite a while since I really felt the need to go to a mall
03:45 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> they just feel so sad and weird these days
03:46 PM Tom_L: left in my hands i never would
03:46 PM roycroft: i used to go once/year, on boxing day, to get calendars at 50% off
03:46 PM xxcoder: I know I went to mall once few years ago but malls dont hold any value to me now
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> back when Sears was a place to get tools...
03:46 PM roycroft: but i don't even do that any more
03:46 PM roycroft: i just order them online
03:47 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> much less of dealing with crowds and slow movers that way
03:47 PM roycroft: i go near the big mall in eugene every couple months or so, because there's a pet supplies store across the street from it that has stuff i need
03:48 PM roycroft: but i never go onto the mall property itself
03:48 PM roycroft: my understanding is that the mall in eugene is half empty
03:48 PM roycroft: which seems to be the state of most malls across the country
03:48 PM Tom_L: the west one here closed
03:48 PM roycroft: they only way that the malls can fill up again is to become amazon warehouses
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I think the last time I went in one was a couple of years ago, now. Used to get cigars at one up in Salem. Then one time, there was a new guy, and he acted like I was a shoplifter. Left a nasty review, never went back
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> that mall had the thing where the big cornerstone stores just looked like warzones
03:51 PM xxcoder: guilt by default is just bad
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I mean, I get it, there's a bad tweaker/theft problem here
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I just chose to be offended
03:52 PM xxcoder: I would be too.
03:58 PM * roycroft wonders how long he's going to have to argue with the amazon marketplace seller before amazon just refund his money
03:59 PM roycroft: they sold me some '10"' molex 4 to sata power cables that are 7" long
03:59 PM roycroft: and don't want to take them back because it would cost too much to ship them back
03:59 PM roycroft: they want me to keep them and figure out how to use them
04:00 PM roycroft: i think i'll really push hard on amazon after the next futile round of communication with the seller
04:01 PM C3-Shop: sounds like the old they started with 10" of wire but when we're done they are 7"
04:01 PM roycroft: i have other cables the exact same length
04:01 PM roycroft: and they are not long enough for my application, which is why i ordered some that claimed to be longer
04:02 PM roycroft: and i don't think it's just a unit conversion thing, as the stated length is actually "10in/25cm"
04:03 PM roycroft: since 10" ~= 25cm they did their math right
04:03 PM roycroft: they just didn't measure right
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> seems like a pretty open and shut case
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> product not as described
04:04 PM rdtsc-w: it probably is 10" when pressed flat and measured from farthest points - they'll claim you should have ordered the 12" version
04:05 PM roycroft: i measured from the outer edge of the molex connector to the outer edge of the sata power connector with the wires taut
04:08 PM xxcoder: was wondering what standard way to measure em was
04:12 PM roycroft: from the inside of the connector to the inside of the connector is pretty standard
04:12 PM roycroft: but i was being generous in my measurement
04:13 PM roycroft: more than the money, it means another 2 or 3 days before i can get that machine back in the rack
04:23 PM JT-Shop: ah those are to convert the 4 pin power plugs to sata
04:26 PM roycroft: yes
04:27 PM roycroft: the boot devices for this machine are ssd drives, and they are mounted inside the machine
04:28 PM roycroft: the data drives are front-accessible, and hot-swappable
04:28 PM roycroft: so i can always manage those after the machine is racked, but i have to have it on the bench to get the boot drives installed
04:40 PM C3-Shop: last seat bolt is being difficult
04:47 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> why is it always the last bolt?
05:07 PM JT-Shop: because you skip it and hope the rest are easier
05:09 PM xxcoder: lol'
05:10 PM roycroft: my job is over for the day
05:11 PM roycroft: i can get back to mounting the table saw fence now
05:11 PM xxcoder: 🎉
05:34 PM JT-Shop: to change the front parking brake cable you have to remove the seats, the tunnel side covers, the parking brake cover and the parking brake assembly
05:40 PM roycroft: and i just found out that i have to completely remove the table top from my table saw to mount the rear fence rail
05:40 PM JT-Shop: fun
05:40 PM roycroft: which is no big deal to remove - just four bolts
05:40 PM roycroft: but after i reinstall it i have to calibrate it to be square to the blade
05:40 PM roycroft: and that can take a long time
05:41 PM JT-Shop: that's what sold me on a sawstop the ease of adjusting everything
05:41 PM roycroft: i am exploring other options
05:41 PM roycroft: both fence rails are through-bolted for some reason
05:42 PM roycroft: the casting is more than thick enough to drill and tap the mounting holes
05:42 PM roycroft: the rails mount with 1/4" bolts currently
05:43 PM roycroft: i may enlarge them and drill/tap 5/16" holes
05:43 PM roycroft: that might take less time than removing the top, installing the fence rails, then reinstalling and realigning the top
05:43 PM roycroft: plus, it would make it easier to remove and reinstall the fence later
05:44 PM roycroft: this is not the original fence that shipped when the saw was new - the stock fence on the early grizzly 1023 saws was crap
05:44 PM roycroft: and a biesemeyer upgrade was pretty standard
05:44 PM roycroft: but it should have been mounted better
05:45 PM JT-Shop: I have a jessem stock roller thing that attached to the fence with magnets and for long stock it keeps it tight against the fence
05:47 PM roycroft: i have the router table version of that
05:47 PM roycroft: the table saw version is too expensive
05:47 PM JT-Shop: I used magnets that switch on/off
05:47 PM JT-Shop: and it's mounted to some mdf
05:47 PM roycroft: so i paid more to get a power feeder instead :)
05:49 PM roycroft: i guess it's time to put a mcmaster order together
05:49 PM JT-Shop: do they deliver to you next day air?
05:49 PM roycroft: the screws i need are $4.95 each at the local hardware store, which is cheaper than jerry's or home depot in town
05:49 PM roycroft: i can get 25 of them for $9.95 from mcmaster
05:49 PM roycroft: they are 2 or 3 days out now
05:50 PM JT-Shop: holy crap what size screw?
05:50 PM roycroft: they used to deliver to eugene next day
05:50 PM roycroft: 5/16"-18x1" flat socket head screws, in black alloy
05:50 PM xxcoder: wow that price differenc
05:50 PM roycroft: they need to be flush with the rails
05:51 PM roycroft: there are four magic words that drive the price way up at a hardware store: "stainless steel", "black alloy", "socket head", and "metric"
05:52 PM roycroft: the ones i need use two of those magic words
05:52 PM roycroft: so they're double sky high
05:53 PM roycroft: and i include terms like "button head" in "socket heat"
05:53 PM roycroft: basically, any socket products
05:53 PM roycroft: if i needed m8 instead of 5/16" they would probably be $7.95 each
05:54 PM Tom_L: i got some of those (not metric) from my local tool guy for like .10 ea
05:54 PM Tom_L: with the fat shallow head
05:54 PM JT-Shop: bomgaars has reasonable prices on socket head fasteners
05:55 PM roycroft: i just don't want to pay $10 shipping on $9.78, so i need to put together a proper order for mcmaster
05:55 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
05:55 PM xxcoder: even if you didnt, its still miles cheaper than local
05:56 PM roycroft: i used to keep a white board in the shop where i would write down mcmaster items i need
05:56 PM roycroft: but that white board is currently in storage
05:56 PM xxcoder: 2 would cost more than 25
05:56 PM roycroft: yes
05:56 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/Vise_parts/Softjaws1.jpg
05:56 PM Tom_L: like that?
05:56 PM roycroft: but i still don't want to pay that much
05:56 PM xxcoder: or 4, with shipping
05:56 PM roycroft: no, i need flat head so they will sit flush with the rails
05:57 PM roycroft: https://www.mcmaster.com/91253A583/
05:57 PM Tom_L: yeah he has those too
05:58 PM Tom_L: haven't visited him in a while.. he might be dead
05:58 PM Tom_L: gettin pretty old
05:58 PM roycroft: i can get mil-spec versions of those same bolts for only $10.54 each
05:59 PM Tom_L: most of what he sells is for aircraft related apps
05:59 PM xxcoder: perfect for mil-spec wood saw table
05:59 PM Tom_L: tooling etc
06:03 PM roycroft: i found a couple other things i need
06:03 PM roycroft: not a good order, but enough to spread the shipping cost out a bit
06:03 PM roycroft: and, as usual, their website promised i would get the stuff tomorrow
06:03 PM roycroft: then my order confirmation said i would get the stuff thursday
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/XkKKzQBttnLwvSRz5
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lots of times - you have to make a tool
06:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> again - it is nice having the monarch running
06:43 PM Tom_L: carb jet?
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes - for some reason it was 2 flats
06:43 PM Tom_L: odd
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I found an overhaul kit locally - should be there tomorrow
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the actual jet below that was normal screw driver slot
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the parts store is pretty awesome. I have gotten 2 carb overhaul kits from them - they know how to look things up
06:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I walked in - and said I have a hyster forklift with a zenith carb - but I don't know what it is.. I think i have some number .. he wanted the numbers - grabbed a random book and said - that number crossed.. I can get it here tomorrow morning.. lol
06:47 PM Tom_L: my mower guys are like that. half the time they don't even need to look it up
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - me too - but he isn't long for this world. that suks
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> sucks
06:47 PM Tom_L: alot of my contacts are getting that way
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I don't even work on the stehls anymore - I just take them to him
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> sthels?
06:48 PM Tom_L: stihl?
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> thats it
06:48 PM Tom_L: haven't had much issue with mine except a primer bulb and a new rope
06:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I had a chainsaw that would not stay running - he went through it and have not had a problem since
06:49 PM Tom_L: my pole saw wouldn't idle and it was due to a crack in the bulb
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> skunkworks8841@: it's a real good sign nowadays if they even have paper books to look stuff up.
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> most of the auto parts stores have thrown out all the paper catalogs,
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is the first place I go now
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> kind of laughing to myself, thinking about how hard it has been to try and teach my counter guys to read footnotes on parts
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is auto-value...
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> i don't know how big they are
06:54 PM Tom_L: haven't heard of them here
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> closest one to me looks like 50-75 miles
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> they got me the overhaul kit for the 42' carb too
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> nice
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> sounds like a keeper
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> rochester iirc
06:57 PM Tom_L: lots of them N of here but none in Ks
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> went off on a tangent like I do, researching a possible laser cutter for making gaskets
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have access to lasers at work
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it comes in handy
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I think it's going to have to wait a bit, though, since price goes up rapidly for an enclosed unit
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and knife cutters
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> looked at that idea, too
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> which might make sense, just use a knife cutter in the Tormach
06:59 PM Tom_L: map shows one here in town though
07:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> cleaning the carb parts 480 seconds at a time
07:09 PM Tom_L: ultrasonic cleaner?
07:10 PM Tom_L: i have a small one i used to clean model engine parts back when i competed
07:10 PM Tom_L: quart mabe?
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I can barely fit the 3 carb pieces in it..
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but it is working well
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> just have to re-start it ever 480 seconds lol
07:14 PM Tom_L: mine is continuous
07:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I put simple green/water in it - that thing was gross inside.
07:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (the carb)
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> takes more then 480 seconds for it to heat up
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> unless I am missing a setting
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that could be
07:15 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/misc_stuff/ultrasonic2.jpg
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> neat - this is a little crap one
07:16 PM Tom_L: i've used that quite a bit thru the years
07:17 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/misc_stuff/ultrasonic1.jpg
07:17 PM Tom_L: jewelery etc i put in a jar inside
07:18 PM Tom_L: or a little plastic toy basket i stole from one of the kids
07:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/NQZ5aZAs1roCdtnM9
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dinky
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> put simple green in it with water
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (because that is what I had down here)
07:23 PM Tom_L: well it works
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> seems to - definatly cleaned some bearings in it
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> gasp - your not supposed to do that!!!
07:24 PM Tom_L: i won't tell
07:24 PM Tom_L: i've done it too
07:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but for the purpose of the application - it was fine
07:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it gets pretty warm after about the 4th run
07:26 PM Tom_L: mine doesn't have a heater but i generally use warm water etc
07:26 PM roycroft: both of my ultrasonic cleaners have heaters
07:27 PM roycroft: but usually they take way longer to heat up than the cycle time i need to clean the stuff
07:27 PM roycroft: and neither can run the heater without the ultrasonic vibrator running
07:28 PM roycroft: i wish i could turn them on to heat-only mode until they reach my set point, and then i can turn the cleaner on
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> agreed
07:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but - I think this was a harbor freight one - that dad bought
07:28 PM roycroft: if i'm doing what tom_l does (which i often do) - put the solvent/cleaner/whatever in a jar and set it in a water bath, i can just fill the thing with hot water
07:29 PM Tom_L: yeah that's what i do
07:29 PM roycroft: but if i'm putting the cleaning solution directly into the reservoir, i have to cycle it several times until it heats up enough
07:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have used kerosine in it - but this time it is simple green
07:29 PM Tom_L: unless the item is too big
07:29 PM roycroft: i actually have three ultrasonic cleaners now
07:29 PM roycroft: i forgot that i have one in my bathroom to clean my spectacles
07:30 PM Tom_L: that works too
07:30 PM roycroft: that one gets plain water with a drop of dish washing soap
07:30 PM roycroft: i use simple green a lot
07:30 PM roycroft: but you have to be careful with that stuff - it removes paint really well
07:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> my ex fiance (before my ex wife) used to like taking her ring to the place we bought it - to do an ultrasonic cleaning of it. it was super sparkley after
