03:12 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
05:46 AM Tom_L: morning
05:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:03 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> Hello
07:03 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> I'm working on my PID and homing setup of my joint 2 /Z axis
07:36 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> rio documentation output demo: https://www.multixmedia.org/Mesa7c81/DOC/index.html
07:40 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> That looks great.
07:43 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> It would have been amazing to have something like this for my 7c80 when I put it together.
10:24 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 2.5 bucket loads of ash out of the furnace (kubota size)
10:53 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnHjrz_inQU
10:53 AM lcnc-relay: This is freaking amazing
10:55 AM xxcoder: cool, watched little bits of it, as guy moves camera way too much for me
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> yeah, it's a bit "jarring"
10:59 AM xxcoder: smooth surface, jagged video
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbM0I1bafhM
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: this one has much less camera movements, and the ball bar is useful for my mill commissioning.
11:11 AM JT-Shop: hmm the engine idles fine but at wot it surges... carb is clean so I guess I'll check the governor setting after a nap
11:20 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Usually.. surging on Briggs is caused by a lean condition.. but I have had engines that always surged a bit
11:37 AM roycroft: the atmospheric river is more like an atmospheric creek this morning, but it's still flowing steadily
11:38 AM roycroft: i'll be in the shop today, setting up and testing the power feeder, and remaking some of the templates for my roof frame
11:38 AM roycroft: and i don't care if it's wet outside for those tasks
11:39 AM roycroft: i also got my new nas built last night, and would like to install it in the rack and start replicating data to it, but the parts i need to finish it up that were promised to be delivered today will not arrive now until monday
11:39 AM roycroft: so i guess that gets to be on hold for a couple more days
12:19 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
12:51 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> moin
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> roycroft: it's been pretty much kerdumping here since the wee hours
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> so just taking a lazy Saturday morning before I really get started for the day
01:11 PM * roycroft also has eased into the day
01:11 PM roycroft: i'm showered and breakfasted now, and this morning's nas configuration done
01:11 PM roycroft: so it's time to head out to the shop
01:12 PM roycroft: i need a plug for the power cord on my power feeder, and when i went to jerry's and home depot to get it on thursday they were both out
01:12 PM roycroft: the guy at jerry's said it's a "very uncommon plug", and not a priority to stock
01:12 PM roycroft: it's a fripping l620p
01:13 PM roycroft: l6-20p
01:13 PM roycroft: pretty common
01:13 PM roycroft: anyway, i should be receiving a couple from amazon presently - they are out for delivery
01:13 PM roycroft: and i'll know to always keep one in stock at all times, since the local stores aren't particularly interested in stocking them
01:14 PM JT-Shop: skunkworks this engine is the same as the last one and it never surged like this one is doing
01:19 PM fluffywolf: 3-phase anything is rare
01:24 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I like the l6 ones because they do a twist lock
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> used to always seeing those at the big box stores, will look next time and see if they're no longer stocked
01:25 PM fluffywolf: I've never seen a 3-phase connector at a hardware store.
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> they are also used for 1 phase 240, here
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> which is what I use them for, as well
01:28 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> most of my big stuff is on NEMA14-50 plugs, though
01:28 PM fluffywolf: oh, I read what you said wrong. I thought you said 16-20, which is 3-phase. that's what I get for IRCing while on the phone and not reading closely.
01:29 PM fluffywolf: my bad. lol
01:30 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> _nodnod_ yeah, I WISH I could get three phase in here but there's no way I can afford what the power company wants even for a larger single phase service
01:30 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> so, lots of vfds for machines
01:30 PM fluffywolf: I had a rotary converter when I had 3-phase machines.
01:31 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> big mill has a Huan-Yang, little mill is single phase
01:31 PM fluffywolf: I standardized on L14-30 for all my 240 stuff, rather than random different connectors for 20A, 30A, neutral, no neutral, etc.
01:31 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> makes good sense
01:33 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> Am planning some more hardwired 240 outlets in the shop, but currently, just one big extension cord
01:33 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> heavy gauge wire $$$
01:33 PM fluffywolf: the non-locking 6-20 is exceptionally common here, and hardware stores have bulk bins of them. lol
01:33 PM fluffywolf: it's the standard plug on grow lights.
01:34 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> lol
01:34 PM fluffywolf: Humboldt County, California... Emerald Triangle, etc.
01:34 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> mostly running welders and heating stuff for metal melting on mine
01:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> The 220 RV plugs were common here.. 4 prong. We used them for 3 phase
01:35 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> it was funny, when the rep from the power company that has the local monopoly was by to discuss what I wanted to do for upgrading service, she was absolutely convinced I was going to run a grow op. I even showed her the machine tools
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> kind of irritating
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> since apparently she's like the queen of local service, and sole gatekeeper
01:37 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> don't care at all if other people like weed, but it's really not my thing
01:38 PM fluffywolf: I got sick of locking, non-locking, neutral, no neutral, 20A, 30A, and nothing plugging together, needing different extension cords, etc... I now have L14-30s on everything other than 50A stuff. it means I have extra copper (10AWG instead of sometimes 12AWG, sometimes neutral in extension cords even when the thing plugged in doesn't have that pin hooked up), but no hassle.
01:38 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> too much is better than not enough
01:40 PM fluffywolf: I don't use weed either, but there's a fuckton of it grown around here.
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I broke down in my truck once, in that area, and donned blue coveralls to work on it. A local that stopped and gave me a ride to the parts store let me know that was a bad idea, because the feds also liked to wear blue coveralls
01:41 PM fluffywolf: lol
01:41 PM fluffywolf: I've never heard that one, and I live here.
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> some years ago, when it was still a major crime
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> could have been lies, too, for all I know
01:42 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> wanna say it was somewhere outside of Eureka?
01:42 PM fluffywolf: I'm somewhere outside of eureka!
01:42 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I grew up in So Cal, but it was 70's/80's
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> _is looking around for scuba gear to go outside_
01:46 PM fluffywolf: totally different topic... I'm shopping for a fire exinguisher for my car. Any opinions? from what I've seen googling, Element is the most hilarious scam ever.
01:47 PM fluffywolf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAjlLscIizI I like how it makes fires worse. :P
01:50 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I'd probably just do a pressurized dry chemical one.
01:50 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> C02 would be good for electrical fires, but the yellow powder ones seem to be about the best general purpose thing
01:51 PM fluffywolf: there's multiple options for dry chemicals, and huge differences in quality... for example, some people say kiddie's with a plastic valve will randomly fail in vehicles...
01:51 PM xxcoder: I wonder what fire types the element covers
01:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> A, B, and C, if I remember correctly, but let me check
01:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> there's no cooling factor, though
01:52 PM xxcoder: hmm seems useless
01:52 PM fluffywolf: xxcoder: none, according to the two test videos I watched.
01:52 PM fluffywolf: lol
01:52 PM xxcoder: lol
01:52 PM xxcoder: 0.1a 0.1b 0.1c?
01:53 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> oh the element, specifically, sry
01:53 PM xxcoder: no plm
01:53 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> looking at the Kidde ones with metal handles, specifically for vehicle use
01:53 PM fluffywolf: I'm leaning towards a ~2lb purple K
01:54 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> pkp was what we used in the navy for a lot of things. Didn't know it was still in use tbh
01:54 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> 5BC on the Kidde ones
01:56 PM fluffywolf: I agree with the people saying plastic valves are a terrible idea... too easy to break when loading things.
01:59 PM fluffywolf: brb
02:09 PM lfluffywof: https://img.waimaoniu.net/2431/2431-202309151154120044.jpg fire extinguishing butt plug. I love how china always uses these butt plug bottles to show off chemicals...
02:13 PM xxcoder: fun
02:22 PM lfluffywof: https://youtu.be/WzV07iUE9eQ?t=1219 these Element extinguishers are criminally bad. literally. it should be illegal to sell this product with the claims they make.
02:30 PM xxcoder: lol. "we all kicked a pregnant woman". took me a min to think about, but indeed its true
03:04 PM JT-Shop: well I think I found the sweet spot for the governor linkage
03:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - the hyster forklift that I would like to work on this winter is a 6 cylinder continental
03:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I thought it was 4
03:26 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> got the quill housing clean and painted, and cleaned all the goop out of the Z axis ballscrew
03:26 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> need to build or mod a paint shaker
03:28 PM xxcoder: damn very heavy wind here
03:32 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> got a nice little cameo appearance by the sun, just long enough to make a store run
03:33 PM roycroft: same here
03:33 PM roycroft: but the sunny break was preceded immediately by huge wind gusts
03:33 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> same here
03:33 PM roycroft: and it did not last long enough for a store run - it lasted maybe 10 minutes
03:36 PM xxcoder: was sunny, then heavy winds and cloudy
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> re-rigged the tarp over the outside cat house, so it doesn't collect water
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> taking care of a couple of feral kittens, now about 8-10 weeks old
03:38 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
03:38 PM roycroft: something just came to me
03:38 PM roycroft: with this power feeder, i can safely do climb cuts on the router table now
03:38 PM roycroft: that is awesome
03:38 PM xxcoder: power feeder?
03:39 PM roycroft: the one i was talking about the other day
03:39 PM roycroft: https://www.maggi-technology.com/en/dettaglio-prodotto/steff-2038
03:39 PM roycroft: i just made a portable mount for it and have it mounted on the table saw for testing
03:40 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> already have 3 cats, or I'd take them in
03:40 PM roycroft: my two cats are best friends
03:40 PM roycroft: but i suspect they would not take kindly to enlarging the family
03:40 PM xxcoder: can always get humanity socity to do vaccines and serilize do ear clip
03:41 PM xxcoder: they stay wild but they wont have more cats
03:41 PM xxcoder: ear clip is to tell people they was already vaccined and serilized
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> planned on doing the spay and neuter when they're a little older
03:42 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> there's a local outfit that does it at low cost
03:43 PM roycroft: i've brought feral cats in for spaying/neutering before
03:43 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> they've bonded to me well enough for me to be able to nab them at least once
03:43 PM roycroft: it's kind of a dilema
03:43 PM roycroft: you need to capture them to do that, and you want to do it so they don't breed
03:43 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> managed to adopt out 4 of their littermates
03:44 PM roycroft: but you also don't want to befriend them, as it's important (at least in the city) to keep them wary of humans
03:44 PM roycroft: too many people do bad things to animals
03:44 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> but the neighbor grabbed mom, unfortunately, not knowing she had kits
03:44 PM roycroft: feeding them is fine
03:44 PM roycroft: but trying to approach to pet them and the like, not a good idea
03:44 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> we're out in the country. less of a worry, but I hear you, humans can be awful
03:44 PM xxcoder: strictly envormental view, it would be best to get rid of super invasive species
03:44 PM roycroft: in more rural areas that's not as much of a problem
03:45 PM JT-Shop: my daughter traps them, covers the trap, takes them to get fixed then the next day lets them go
03:45 PM roycroft: and spaying/neutering effectively does that, xxcoder
03:45 PM xxcoder: but yeah we arent perfect lol
03:45 PM roycroft: it keeps the cats from being invasive
03:45 PM roycroft: that's the best way to do it, jt-shop
03:45 PM xxcoder: roy yeah. they can still live and kill more birds and such
03:45 PM JT-Shop: unfortunately cats breed faster than rabbits
03:45 PM xxcoder: but its better than doing nothing at all
03:45 PM roycroft: at least they're not tribbles, who are born pregnant :)
03:46 PM xxcoder: lol indeed roy
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> they still take their toll on songbirds, but life is harsh, and I am not mean enough to delete cats
03:46 PM JT-Shop: a female cat can get pregnant right after giving birth
03:46 PM fluffywolf: now I want to re-watch TAS, because I can't remember what happened in the second tribbles episode.
03:46 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> lol
03:47 PM xxcoder: the great klingon tribble war
03:47 PM xxcoder: sounds silly but tribbles did huge damage to klingon worlds
03:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - you know the klingons are not real - right?
03:48 PM xxcoder: of course lol
03:49 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> skunkworks8841@: blasphemy
03:54 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> am reminded of a friend at a convention, who happened to be dressed as a 7' tall squirrel at the time, being chased by Klingons. They eventually trapped him in an elevator, but he bought them off with a 5th of Scotch
03:55 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> said Klingons were armed with forks
04:06 PM roycroft: of course klingons are not real
04:07 PM roycroft: tribbles ate all their food and the klingons all starved to death, thus rendering them extinct
04:09 PM Tom_L: JT-Mobile, i forgot the utility to build the .py from resources.qrc
04:24 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/VHWUHkLzDCE
04:24 PM JT-Shop: flex resources
04:34 PM Tom_L: gotta find a rcc executable for the rpi
04:34 PM Tom_L: that's why it ain't workin yet
04:34 PM Tom_L: that's the next step between interruptions
04:34 PM JT-Shop: that might be fun
04:35 PM Tom_L: i tried copying the .py over from amd64 but i haven't been able to get it to see it yet
04:35 PM Tom_L: i nearly forgot how to do this
04:35 PM Tom_L: it's something that needs to be done somehow
04:36 PM JT-Shop: I gotta figure out why my rpi5 is locking up
04:36 PM Tom_L: could use pyside6 rcc if i knew the package
04:37 PM Tom_L: trying to do it all on the rpi5 to make sure it's doable
04:37 PM JT-Shop: once the .py file is generated it should just work
04:37 PM Tom_L: i agree
04:37 PM Tom_L: i may try that again in a bit
04:38 PM Tom_L: it should just be looking for the subfolder
04:38 PM Tom_L: images
04:38 PM Tom_L: well, not even.. at that point
04:39 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:39 PM Tom_rpi5: https://github.com/robocorp/rcc
04:39 PM Tom_rpi5: was a suggestion
04:39 PM Tom_rpi5: i haven't gotten back to yet
04:45 PM Tom_L: duh, i have to add those to the qss file too
04:48 PM Tom_L: that's all it took :)
04:52 PM JT-Shop: lol
04:56 PM JT-Shop: if you use the tool it should walk you through from start to finish
05:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Funny how much cozier the house feels when the whole concrete floor is warm
05:03 PM JT-Shop: I just watched a feral cat catch a chipmunk
05:03 PM JT-Shop: on my camera
05:06 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/rpi5/
05:07 PM Tom_L: it's a start
05:07 PM Tom_L: need to figure out those extra tabs at the top
05:07 PM JT-Shop: on main?
05:08 PM Tom_L: next to operations
05:08 PM Tom_L: to the right
05:08 PM JT-Shop: oh that's tabs that are off the screen
05:08 PM roycroft: well, that portable mount for the power feeder is not going to work
05:08 PM roycroft: i thought it might not
05:08 PM Tom_L: operations is the last one
05:08 PM roycroft: if i had a smaller one i might have gotten away with it, but this one is too big
05:08 PM Tom_L: maybe sub tabs
05:08 PM JT-Shop: I usually use south tabs for a touch screen so I don't have to lift my arm up as high
05:09 PM roycroft: it moves a lot
05:09 PM Tom_L: i haven't gotten that far yet, i may move them
05:09 PM * roycroft will have to drill holes in the table top and mount it properly
05:09 PM Tom_L: i had it resizing but broke that
05:10 PM roycroft: and i need new bolts for that, but i'm off to town in a minute for other errands anyway
05:10 PM Tom_L: not sure where to put the horizontal spacer
05:11 PM Tom_L: may need to make the probe buttons a bit bigger
05:11 PM Tom_L: i didn't change those
05:24 PM Tom_L: fixed the tabs..
05:25 PM Tom_L: you were right
05:28 PM Tom_L: updated pics
05:30 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, what is the 'default view button'?
05:30 PM Tom_L: i get an error that it's missing but not sure what it is
05:31 PM Tom_L: for the plotter i'm sure
05:32 PM JT-Shop: yup, I forget why that comes up
05:33 PM Tom_L: nothing in the plotter docs that i can find
05:33 PM Tom_L: i never noticed it until i started running this ui from a terminal
05:34 PM Tom_L: where do you set the tabs location?
08:11 PM roycroft: what a deluge down towards the valley
08:11 PM roycroft: almost zero visibility, trees down all over the place, cars pulled over just waiting it out
08:12 PM roycroft: but up here, and down in town, it's just your usual winter atmospheric river
09:36 PM olfluffywf is now known as fluffywolf
09:43 PM roycroft: i got my property tax bill today
09:43 PM roycroft: taxes went down about $20
09:43 PM roycroft: that's never happened before
09:43 PM xxcoder: from $40? ;)
09:44 PM roycroft: from $1800
09:44 PM xxcoder: joking aside, yeah properity rarely go down. weird
09:46 PM roycroft: i also got a 45 page letter from the oregon department of revenue today
09:46 PM roycroft: that was pretty scary, until i opened it
09:47 PM roycroft: i made a math error at the very beginning of my tax return
09:47 PM roycroft: i was off by $1
09:47 PM roycroft: so they corrected it
09:48 PM roycroft: and every line they corrected they adjusted by the $1, and printed an explanation of what they did, why they did it as they did, and what my appeal options are if i disagree
09:48 PM roycroft: that ended up taking 45 pages by the time they were done with the adjustments
09:48 PM xxcoder: 45 print and mail would cost more than $1
09:48 PM roycroft: the net effect is that my refund will be $1 less than i anticipated
09:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I have someone do my taxes
09:49 PM roycroft: and they spent like $50 to send me the letter
09:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that I trust
09:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> she is a bit on the spectrum - perfect for the job she chose
09:52 PM roycroft: i'd like to hire someone to do my taxes
09:53 PM roycroft: my business are still operating at a loss, though
09:53 PM xxcoder: I always did my own taxes. nothing complex from me
09:53 PM roycroft: i hope to change that by next year
09:53 PM xxcoder: havent filed one for few years now tho
09:53 PM roycroft: and as soon as i turn a profit, no matter how small, i'll hire someone to do my taxes
09:54 PM roycroft: i hope you did during the pandemic, so you got your free money
09:54 PM xxcoder: I did thankfully
09:54 PM xxcoder: that money was lifesaver
09:55 PM roycroft: it helped a lot of people
09:55 PM fluffywolf: I was working too hard during the pandemic to file, and thus didn't get it. bleh.
09:55 PM roycroft: the first couple helped me, but i wasn't eligible for the last one, because i realized a capital gain that pushed me over the eligibility threshold
09:56 PM fluffywolf: (delivery driver... we were working all day, every day, to deliver all the toilet paper people could fit in their garages)
09:56 PM roycroft: that reminds me
09:56 PM roycroft: my boss is trying to sell his house and move back east
09:57 PM xxcoder: lol I bought bidet. it was much cheaper and I used maybe 3 rolls across two plague years
09:57 PM fluffywolf: I already had a bidet. lol
09:57 PM roycroft: he filled his basement with ammo and incandescent light bulbs during the obama years, because he was convinced that both would become illegal
09:57 PM roycroft: i wonder what he's going to do with that stuff
09:57 PM fluffywolf: ammo has gotten very expensive, so that was actually a sound investment if he sells it.
09:58 PM fluffywolf: incandescent light bulbs... not so much.
09:58 PM roycroft: stockpiling both is pretty dumb, imo
09:58 PM roycroft: for the reasons he did id
09:58 PM roycroft: it
10:01 PM fluffywolf: eh... if there ever really is some form of major societal failure, ammo is probably the best thing to have stockpiled. I don't have any, but at least I can see the reason people do.
10:01 PM xxcoder: isnt your boss business also being moved east?
10:02 PM Tom_L: building this gui is boring... lots of repeat
10:02 PM Tom_L: then i f'd it up and had to start over
10:03 PM xxcoder: why have to start over?
10:05 PM Tom_L: moved the tabs from top to bottom and designer didn't like that one little bit
10:05 PM Tom_L: so i did that before adding anything else
10:06 PM xxcoder: interesting
10:08 PM Tom_L: at least it's all been tested
10:08 PM Tom_L: i'm making my touch-probe3 a touch screen gui too
10:08 PM xxcoder: nice.
10:09 PM fluffywolf: at some point you'll need to help me figure out touch probes... I'm not ready to hook mine up yet, since the machine needs much other work, but some day.
10:10 PM fluffywolf: why are stainless m6-1.0 nuts $0.10 online and $2 at the hardware store? bleh
10:11 PM xxcoder: butteralloy vs real steel?
10:12 PM xxcoder: of course, store could be also ripping off
10:12 PM fluffywolf: the hardware store has Hillman, which isn't much better than amazon crap.
10:12 PM fluffywolf: all the hardware stores quadruple the price of anything metric compared to the identical inch-size equivalent.
10:13 PM fluffywolf: a m6 part is four times the price of a 1/4" part, despite costing exactly the same amount to make.
10:13 PM xxcoder: unfortunately basic econ thing. low demend means higher price
10:13 PM xxcoder: in least for commerance thing
10:14 PM xxcoder: but yeah turret lathe (I think thats the name?) can turn so many of those in a day
10:17 PM fluffywolf: inch is only more popular because it's so much cheaper. lol
10:21 PM fluffywolf: I bet if they swapped the pricing, metricification would happen pretty much overnight...
10:23 PM xxcoder: probably not
10:35 PM fluffywolf: nilered is building something impressively expensive this time around.
10:41 PM fluffywolf: https://youtu.be/GmwaJnj6pfY?t=969 someone needs to tram their mill. lol
10:42 PM xxcoder: I have gotten that pattern and it felt super flat
10:44 PM xxcoder: the maker needs bigger machine tho, thats a lot of machine milling over and over
10:44 PM xxcoder: or bigger tool
10:45 PM fluffywolf: this project is a lot more engineering than I expect from nilered...
10:46 PM xxcoder: I had dropped nilered a while ago
10:47 PM fluffywolf: he's building a ~$25k liquid nitrogen generator
10:47 PM xxcoder: ya saw a bit of it. insane.
10:47 PM xxcoder: why do he want it? or is it just showcase?
10:48 PM fluffywolf: he apparently is planning a series of videos that need large quantities of liquid nitrogen or liquid air.
10:49 PM fluffywolf: turning air into gasoline is one of the examples he gave.
11:16 PM xxcoder: the winds is going REALLY nuts now
11:16 PM xxcoder: I hope we still have most of roof
11:18 PM fluffywolf: it's been pouring rain here, but it's let up, and there wasn't much wind.
11:26 PM fluffywolf: his setup is making LN2 impressively quickly, but I think it's also impressively dangerous... he has a silly little release valve that absolutely will not keep that dewar from going boom if the vacuum fails, for example...
11:30 PM fluffywolf: he's pressurizing the inner flask of a dewar the manufacturer says not to pressurize, and that he knows leaks vacuum... if the leak is internal and the pressure causes a failure where the ln2 is sucked between the walls, it's going to flash into enough non-L n2 to make his shop go away when the outer jacket ruptures. heh.
11:30 PM xxcoder: oh boy
11:31 PM xxcoder: his early videos, he was pretty good on safety
11:31 PM xxcoder: later ones got less and less safety focused so I had dropped
11:41 PM fluffywolf: I'm unconvinced that a commercial account with the local industrial gas company wouldn't have been a much cheaper option. heh. but it's a nifty project!
