#linuxcnc Calendar

12:28 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Morn morn
12:44 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Really despise the dark mornings
12:44 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Hello darkness, we're not friends
01:15 AM Deejay: moin
01:19 AM * roycroft suggests that lucid.nonsense not move to hammerfest
01:48 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> There was no way I'd move further north than where I grew up
01:52 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I've manafed to contract tennis elbow in my left arm, thankfully not right arm like last year
01:54 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Also thankfully still have the forearm strap so I can ignore it and keep making it worse
04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
05:28 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:55 AM rdtsc-w: moin and morning
05:56 AM JT-Cave: yo
06:07 AM JT-Cave: I found some basil seeds from 2018, I wonder if they will sprout?
07:57 AM rdtsc-w: wonder if 7 years' worth of today's background radiation exposure influences the viability...
08:04 AM JT-Cave: they do have seed banks that store seeds for a long time
09:29 AM JT-Shop: 8 half-rounds and 16 rounds left to split
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <uazandy@> Hallo zeigt doch mal eure maschienen .Bin sehr gespannt
09:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39q6kvrSBSk
10:05 AM roycroft: the seed banks are climate controlled
10:08 AM JT-Shop: so is my house :)
10:09 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> put some in some wet paper towel - see if they grow.,.
10:09 AM JT-Shop: that's what I did
10:09 AM JT-Shop: that K&T is a beast
10:13 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> still my favorite machine
10:19 AM roycroft: basil seeds take about 12 weeks to germinate, iirc
10:19 AM roycroft: it's been a long time since i grew it from seed
10:29 AM JT-Shop: I can't find fresh basil here anymore
10:40 AM Tom_L: skunkworks, does the belt go to the next tool as soon as the tool change completes?
10:40 AM Tom_L: looks like it
10:53 AM JT-Shop: AI Overview Basil seeds typically take 7 to 14 days to germinate, though some can sprout in as few as 5 days while others may take longer. Optimal germination requires warm temperatures (around \(70-85^{\circ }F\)) and consistently moist soil.
10:54 AM Tom_L: AI gave me the number for an ins co yesterday and it was the epilepsy foundation. AI miss the mark on that one
10:54 AM JT-Shop: lol
10:55 AM Tom_L: found out why my rates went up alot. they're doing away with that brand name so i figure they're trying to run customers off
10:55 AM Tom_L: it worked for me
10:57 AM Tom_L: i just had to wait for them to buy me a roof
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Tom_L: I call the next tool after the previous tool change.
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (so it should be ready - but that was such a short program - it had to wait for a few tools)
11:04 AM JT-Shop: might be time to get a new motor on the splitter
11:04 AM JT-Shop: I think I have 3 more 190cc B&S motors left on the shelf
11:04 AM Tom_L: gettin tired?
11:06 AM JT-Shop: wouldn't start this morning now it won't start again
11:11 AM Tom_L: 1st day back today
11:21 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> JT-Shop: have any of the old style B&S pulsa-jet carb?
11:24 AM JT-Shop: not familiar with that, got a photo?
11:33 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7gatuaMU08
11:33 AM Tom_L: repairing one
11:33 AM Tom_L: looks like it works similar to a 2 stroke carb
11:34 AM roycroft: not that i have the spare cash, nor the time to go get it, but i found a nice power feeder in central oregon for a really good price
11:34 AM roycroft: so i may end up making a trip over the mountains later today
11:35 AM roycroft: i've been wanting a power feeder for years
11:36 AM JT-Shop: ah yeah those are on the engines that used to be build in Murry Ky
11:36 AM JT-Shop: the flat head engine
11:36 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I grew up fixing/rebuilding those style engines. Dad would pick them up from the junk yard.
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> They must have been from the early 80's and on
11:52 AM JT-Shop: actually I have one on my 2hp horz shaft flat head
11:58 AM xxcoder: JT-Shop: that hand tools guy grew one tomoto plant from 100 year old magazine packet of seeds
11:58 AM xxcoder: give it a chance and see
12:10 PM JT-Shop: turns out I have 4 to choose from... maybe one has the correct size shaft
12:22 PM roycroft: cool - i made a deal on the power feeder
12:22 PM * roycroft will be making a road trip today
12:23 PM roycroft: probably the last opportunity this year to head over the mountains before the pass is snowy all the time -
12:23 PM roycroft: weather arrives tomorrow night or thursday, and that is likely the start of the mountain snowy season
12:23 PM roycroft: it's already snowed a couple times at the pass
12:24 PM Tom_L: don't get stuck on the wrong side
12:25 PM roycroft: i should be back to at least near the pass before dark tonight
12:25 PM roycroft: this power feeder is a steff, and i'm pretty stocked about it
12:25 PM roycroft: steff are the rolls-royce of power feeders
12:26 PM roycroft: made in italy
12:26 PM roycroft: and the one i'm getting is 1hp
12:26 PM roycroft: i've been looking at smaller ones - primarily 1/3hp - for years, and i'm getting this for way less than the price of the tiny, asian import ones
12:28 PM roycroft: oh, and it's single phase, which is unusual, and saves me from having to get a vfd to power it
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad has a powerfeeder he got.. wonder where that is.
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> he was going to put it on the oliver planer I think
12:50 PM rdtsc-w: I just fixed a drive which had microscopic physical damage to the pins of a TQFP-128 IC (cram 128 pins, each 0.2mm wide, into the size of a fingertip)
12:52 PM roycroft: the power feeder is going to make life so much easier, and i'll get much better cuts, especially when ripping woods like white oak and hard maple
12:53 PM roycroft: when you feed those woods by hand, just the slightest hesitation in feeding will burn them instantly
01:49 PM JT-Shop: the current engine has a short 25mm shaft and two of the new engines I have have long 25mm shafts so I just need to cut one off and do the mods to fit the starter
02:03 PM JT-Shop: interesting all three intek engines are different heads and the 4th is a flat head
02:47 PM JT-Shop: flywheel key was sheared off
03:30 PM JT-Shop: gotta make a few modifications to the new motor for the electric starter
04:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have had the briggs backfire - causing the flywheel key shear about 1/2... causes them to run like crap
04:12 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:14 PM JT-Shop: do you know the best way to remove the flywheel?
04:14 PM JT-Shop: what they do in the factory is...
04:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we also had one that (granted - these were all junk yard engines) would run perfectly - then just die. then usually start again.. Took us forever to figure out that the valve seat was lose.. it would pop up and cock sideways.
04:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I would pick the engine up by the flywheel - then hit the crank shaft with a brass hammer.
04:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> seemed to work the best
04:15 PM JT-Shop: in the factory they hit the outside top with a dead blow hammer
04:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ? like a tie rod end?
04:16 PM JT-Shop: hmm no, take the nut off and just hit the outside top edge and it's loose
04:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> outside top edge of what?
04:16 PM JT-Shop: the flywheel
04:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ah - so kinda like a tierod end. hole on
04:17 PM JT-Shop: but yeah the same principle as hitting the side of the tierod end
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ah - we are on the same page
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Tell me why it would be stupid to mount a grinder to the knee ways on a mill and flatten the table with it
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the best way we found was picking up the flywell and hitting the crankshaft
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> because the ways might not be flat?
04:23 PM JT-Shop: I asked my buddy who used to be a supervisor on the final assembly line how they remove the flywheel at briggs
04:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I will have to try that next time
04:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> they were always a pain to get off because of the taper
04:25 PM JT-Shop: that's why I called him one day, I couldn't get a flywheel off
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yes, effort would be made to work them as well as possible ahead of time
04:25 PM Tom_L: thankfully MT2-3 don't hold much
04:26 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I just shudder to think wat it would cost to get a 1450mm ground around here
04:26 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> +table
04:26 PM JT-Shop: no blanchard grinders around
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> No, lots of cnc shops, but none that offer grinding, well, 6-7 hours away
04:28 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> There are specialist reconditioners
04:28 PM JT-Shop: specialist == $$$$
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yup
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Could cut my losses and make a fixture plate from aluminium tooling plate and shim it
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Have the z height
04:30 PM Tom_L: steel would be better
04:30 PM Tom_L: for something critical like that
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yeah maybe, I sorta want to cnc the knee though
04:31 PM Tom_L: all the aircraft around here make steel jigs, all the 3rd party vendors use aluminum jigs :)
04:31 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Guess I'll just need stronger gas springs
04:31 PM JT-Shop: MIC 6 would be flatter than a steel plate
04:32 PM Tom_L: being cast maybe
04:34 PM JT-Shop: I picked the short 7/8" shaft motor because it turned over easy... I hope it runs after I get it installed
04:36 PM Tom_L: you'd be surprised (maybe not) what even a skin cut to a plate will to to it's flatness
04:36 PM JT-Shop: the long shaft 7/8" is a cast iron cylinder but it's locked up
04:36 PM Tom_L: do they sleeve the others or just use the casting?
04:37 PM JT-Shop: and sometimes surprised when it moves as you cut it
04:37 PM JT-Shop: I don't think they make any cast iron blocks anymore
04:37 PM Tom_L: i made quite a few test specimens when i was helping my bud and you had to get them flat
04:37 PM JT-Shop: they went to aluminum back in 53
04:38 PM JT-Shop: 7/8 lovejoy should be here by lunch tomorrow
04:38 PM Tom_L: they'd drop off a big arse block and want half dozen from each grain direction
04:39 PM Tom_L: rounds and flats
04:41 PM Tom_L: the old one metric?
04:41 PM JT-Shop: yup it had a 25mm shaft and two of the new ones had 25mm shafts
04:41 PM JT-Shop: one was a flat head and the other one was a bit strange with DOV
04:43 PM Tom_L: 76F, took the kids to the park
04:43 PM JT-Shop: cool
04:46 PM Tom_L: did you use a horizontal layout on the led example?
04:46 PM JT-Shop: grid prob
04:47 PM Tom_L: you need to drop a couple widgets then pick the layout right?
04:47 PM Tom_L: ok
04:47 PM Tom_L: where do you find that?
04:47 PM JT-Shop: you have to drop one then you can pick a layout
04:47 PM JT-Shop: right click
04:47 PM Tom_L: ahh ok
04:47 PM Tom_L: you can have different ones inside a container right?
04:48 PM JT-Shop: each container can have layouts so yeah
04:48 PM Tom_L: ok
04:49 PM Tom_L: guess i should have figured that out early on
05:10 PM JT-Shop: one part modified to fit the electric starter
05:15 PM Tom_L: basic ui started
05:15 PM JT-Shop: cool
05:15 PM Tom_L: if you don't start with your basic example where do you add the file menu?
05:16 PM Tom_L: i started with yours though.. just wanted to know
05:16 PM JT-Shop: one of the starters?
05:17 PM Tom_L: if i start with a blank page
05:17 PM Tom_L: i see toolbar and status bar but where's the menu
05:17 PM Tom_L: to add a new menu
05:17 PM JT-Shop: did you start with a main window?
05:18 PM Tom_L: i clicked on create
05:18 PM Tom_L: and got a blank workspace
05:18 PM JT-Shop: easy to just copy a starter and rename
05:18 PM Tom_L: i did
05:18 PM JT-Shop: what did you create?
05:18 PM Tom_L: i just wondered where it was
05:18 PM JT-Shop: I'm not following what you did
05:19 PM Tom_L: open designer and click on create to get a completely blank work area except 'ok' and 'cancel'
05:20 PM Tom_L: i wound up using your simple sim but wanted to know how to add a menu from scratch
05:20 PM JT-Shop: you have to pick mainwindow
05:20 PM Tom_L: ahh ok
05:20 PM Tom_L: is that in the list on the left?
05:20 PM JT-Shop: you picked dialog maybe
05:20 PM JT-Shop: yes
05:20 PM Tom_L: oh i see it now
05:21 PM Tom_L: if i'm gonna start over i may as well know all the tricks
05:21 PM Tom_L: or a few more at least
05:21 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:21 PM JT-Shop: if you copy one of the starters that is the easy way
05:22 PM Tom_L: btw this flex 'add and work' thing is the shizzle...
05:22 PM Tom_L: add an item and it just friggin works!
05:22 PM JT-Shop: yippee
05:23 PM Tom_L: i copied your simple ini thing too for now
05:23 PM JT-Shop: so much easier than anything else
05:23 PM Tom_L: just for preview
05:23 PM Tom_L: no sh*t
05:23 PM Tom_L: we'll see how much i've forgotten
05:23 PM JT-Shop: yup the simple ini is a good place to start too
05:24 PM Tom_L: i can fix up one of mine pretty easy but for now that's fine
05:24 PM Tom_L: you select touch in the ini right?
05:25 PM JT-Shop: you can use a touch theme in the ini
05:26 PM Tom_L: in the flexgui section?
05:26 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/ini.html#flexgui
05:27 PM Tom_L: ok
05:33 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
05:34 PM Tom_L: ok so far so good
05:34 PM Tom_L: never used theme yet
05:58 PM xxcoder: "dermel with some anger management issues" ToT lol
06:02 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yeah I chuckled a bit, but one one of his weaker episodes I thought
06:02 PM xxcoder: agreed
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Wooohooo
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: I have solved my homing issues.
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Now, to get the USB pendant working
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Then I need to fix the scale factor, the mill thinks it's moving far further than it actually is moving.
06:47 PM xxcoder: second package is another pink bag. probably replacing last one for whatever actual buyer was
06:54 PM xxcoder: congats ccat
07:22 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Pendant hal file is being pissy
07:23 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://github.com/ccatlett1984/LinuxCNC_configs/blob/main/dmc_test%2Fxhc-whb04b-6.hal. Line 73, says it's already connected...
07:29 PM Tom_L: look at 68
07:30 PM Tom_L: that is likely the conflict
07:31 PM Tom_L: save for the .is.
07:31 PM Tom_L: dunno
07:31 PM Tom_L: something about that doesn't look right but maybe it is
07:33 PM Tom_L: i'm pretty sure whb04b-6 was fixed, i know there was an issue a while back but -4 worked
07:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://forum.linuxcnc.org/10-advanced-configuration/51432-xhc-whb04b-04-got-it-working
07:33 PM lcnc-relay: According to this, I can just delete the halui portion of the offending connections
07:34 PM Tom_L: -4 i know works
07:34 PM Tom_L: -6 has more whistles i'm sure
07:41 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> As fast as I know, the only difference is the extra 2 axis controls
07:42 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> This is a tomorrow problem, bed time soon.
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol . Sully is playing with freecad
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> He is 10
08:03 PM xxcoder: thats cool
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I told him he should watch some freecad videos . And it will probably be frustrating
08:04 PM xxcoder: manjojelly ones?
08:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Maybe
08:05 PM xxcoder: id recommand those
09:27 PM * roycroft is back, with the power feeder in the back of his car
09:28 PM roycroft: that was a great score - the seller said he had used it 5 times, and i believe him, because it is in perfect condition
09:29 PM Tom_L: is this a saw attachment?
09:34 PM Tom_L: i see one for 10k...
09:34 PM Tom_L: that's the exception though
09:50 PM roycroft: it can be used on a table saw
09:50 PM roycroft: the one i got goes for $1500
09:50 PM roycroft: i got it for $250
09:51 PM roycroft: https://www.maggi-technology.com/en/dettaglio-prodotto/steff-2038
09:52 PM roycroft: they are most commonly used on shapers
09:52 PM roycroft: but i don't have a shaper
09:52 PM roycroft: my intended use is primarily for my table saw and router table
09:53 PM roycroft: some folks use a power feeder when resawing on the band saw
09:53 PM roycroft: that's something i might try
09:53 PM roycroft: it would be rather difficult to mount on my band saw, though
10:06 PM roycroft: this was on my list of machinery to get for years, but was not something i was actively searching for
10:07 PM roycroft: i stumbled upon it this morning and snatched it up while the getting was good
10:27 PM xxcoder: nice
