04:44 AM JT-Cave: how annoying the linuxcnc rpi5 has the screen saver and lock enabled just what a cnc machine needs a blank locked screen
05:16 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> JT-Cave: xset -dpms
05:16 AM lcnc-relay: xset s off
05:16 AM lcnc-relay: xset s noblank
05:16 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> sudo apt-get remove -y xscreensaver
05:16 AM lcnc-relay: sudo apt-get remove -y xscreensaver-data
05:18 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> thats what i add always to my startups , But the newer versions still sometimes go to a black screen.
05:19 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> https://github.com/multigcs/riocore/blob/main/riocore/files/riocore-installer.sh here is also xfce4-power-manager setup included
05:22 AM JT-Cave: yup I do that in my debian pc's https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/debian-11-fix.html
05:23 AM JT-Cave: xset -dpms s off s noblank s 0 0 s noexpose
05:39 AM JT-Cave: I guess I was complaining that why do I have to fix that in a cnc controller software
06:15 AM rdtsc-w: claim that as a bug in the next meeting :)
06:33 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:33 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> JT-Cave: agreed. I turn it off the first time it happens.
08:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> if you take that one step farther - it should auto login too..
08:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but that is just me
08:11 AM JT-Cave: exactly, no blanking or locking the screen and auto login
08:26 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I will have to save your link to debian-11-fix.html..
08:26 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I always have to look it up
08:27 AM Tom_L: you'll lose it by the time rpi6 is out
08:27 AM Tom_L: :)
08:27 AM Tom_L: i'm the same way... either put up or look it up
08:32 AM rdtsc-w: autologin may have been similar for the last few releases, but can be very different for different releases and desktop environments, hence "always look it up"
08:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> right
08:55 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> saved in my Bridgeport folder
09:03 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> sounds like an annoying thing, I was assuming one could just turn it off in settings, but I guess not
09:09 AM rdtsc-w: it'll likely have you editing a file in /etc
09:10 AM rdtsc-w: well for the auto-login anyways
09:11 AM rdtsc-w: if the machine will never be connected to a network, not much harm in enabling auto-login, except the default cnc user has sudo rights, so anybody can walk up to it and totally bork it
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> nobody else in my shop, and when I finally keel over, I don't want to leave it locked out
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> :p
09:18 AM JT-Shop: if the rpi is in a public place yup otherwise no problem
09:19 AM JT-Shop: I don't want to try and unlock a cnc machine every time I want to change something
11:11 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> being tempted to go talk to the manager of a shop in our company in a larger city just to our North. They've been looking for a tech for a while, now, and it's been slow at our shop for the last year or so. (small town, and the shop joined a larger corporate thing, so we lost a lot of local business over the changes)
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> just don't want to cause political waves that get me canned, but if it gets much worse going into winter, I'm going to need a plan B
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> sucks, cause I'm like 7 years from retirement, and not keen to move a large, heavy tool box, or increase my commute, or have to prove myself to new people
11:15 AM rdtsc-w: guess it boils down to "will they still be afloat in 7 years"
11:26 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> trying to predict the trend, yes
11:27 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> one other attractant to the other shop, is we got loaned one of their counter people, and she exhibited very good attention to detail. One of my biggest peeves with the two new management types who replaced the old, is that they seem to be illiterate and poor at written and verbal communication, as well as not generating paperwork that I depend on
11:29 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> conversation with assistant:
11:29 AM lcnc-relay: Ass.: hey, do you need x on this job?
11:29 AM lcnc-relay: Me: _points at page where I wrote this all out in great detail, with required time and materials already looked up_
11:29 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> typical interactions
11:30 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:31 AM xxcoder: "as per previous email..."
11:32 AM xxcoder: I seriously used that once. and my previous email was not long essay, at 2 or 3 lines.
11:32 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I try to be patient and keep the snark down, but sometimes the stupid is too strong
11:53 AM roycroft: i'm just used to having to relitigate everything multiple times until it's actually done
11:53 AM roycroft: just yesterday my boss asked me when the new server will arrive
11:54 AM roycroft: the one he told me last week not to order
11:54 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oof
11:54 AM Tom_L: as soon as you order them
11:55 AM roycroft: i'm still cleaning up from the office move
11:55 AM roycroft: i have about 100 development websites to renumber still, which will take me the rest of the day
11:56 AM roycroft: so i'll order the server when i can
11:56 AM roycroft: unless i'm told not to again in the meantime :)
01:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - had a motherboard that had a huge 2430 battery on it (in a punch press running some sort of dos program)
01:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we replaced it and it still had a bios battery dead error.
01:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> finally looked at the motherboard and there are also 2 dallas chips on it
01:18 PM rdtsc-w: /cringe
01:19 PM rdtsc-w: although, some of them have an external battery input pin - can be modded
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> these don't
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I found replacements.. time will tell when they get here
01:19 PM rdtsc-w: the chip itself has the input, unused
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I could go in and grind down the the battery..
01:19 PM rdtsc-w: replacements are all old-stock by now, it is a gamble
01:20 PM rdtsc-w: that has been done :)
01:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no - these are re-done with an external battery
01:20 PM xxcoder: I suppose can always just solder wires to pads and have it more replacable
01:21 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/vzSGkY29MJBipYev5
01:21 PM xxcoder: interesting
01:21 PM rdtsc-w: check out the tadiran brand cells for that purpose... lithium-thionyl lasts 15years
01:21 PM xxcoder: interesting brand name too lol
01:21 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - he is a retro guy - I think I have watched him on youtube.
01:40 PM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> dosbox 🙂
01:44 PM roycroft: so i mentioned earlier that i have to renumber ~100 websites due to the server they're hosted on having moved to the new office
01:45 PM roycroft: i told my boss this morning that none of those sites will work until i renumber them, and sent him a list of the sites
01:45 PM roycroft: that was fine for a while, then he started sending me "this website does not work" emails
01:45 PM roycroft: i would respond "see my earlier email about renumbering"
01:45 PM roycroft: i've done that half a dozen times now
01:46 PM roycroft: and he just sent me an email saying i need to clone of the unreachable sites to a new dev site that's not been set up yet, and i have to do it right away
01:46 PM roycroft: i suggested he go have lunch :)
01:49 PM xxcoder: sometimes I wonder if he has demenia
01:55 PM roycroft: he is getting more foregetful than he should
01:55 PM roycroft: he's 78 now
01:55 PM roycroft: so i suppose arguably less forgetful than one would expect
01:56 PM roycroft: it's just unfortunate that i have to spend so much of my time responding to stuff like that when i could be getting the work done that needs to be done
01:56 PM roycroft: i'm on lunch break right now, btw, so this is not distracting from my work :)
03:58 PM * JT-Shop takes a break from lumberjacking
04:09 PM * roycroft has taken to just ignoring his boss' emails, and focusing on getting the work done, which, when it's done, should slow down or stop the emails
04:10 PM roycroft: those of you who have kids, remember when they were six years old, and you went on a trip to grandma's house, and about 2 blocks from home the kid asked "are we there yet?", and continued to ask that every 2 minutes until you got to grandma's house?
04:10 PM roycroft: that kid is my boss today
04:12 PM JT-Shop: I would tell them yup we were there and now we are heading home you napped and missed it
04:12 PM xxcoder: I never drove my kids to grandparents
04:12 PM xxcoder: probably because I never had any kid
04:13 PM roycroft: the thing is, these are all development websites - none are public, customer-facing, production sites
04:14 PM roycroft: the other thing is, there is still tons of work to do to finish getting moved out of the old office
04:14 PM roycroft: which is what my boss should be doing
04:14 PM rdtsc-w: promote yourself to manager, and hire some poor soul to do your work
04:15 PM roycroft: i'd rather hire a manager whose job is to deal with my boss while i get my work done
04:16 PM JT-Shop: 4 more rounds to noodle and I forget how many more rounds will be left to split
04:16 PM roycroft: i'm in the home stretch on this project now
04:16 PM roycroft: i think i'll finish today
04:19 PM JT-Shop: I thought one of the bolts that hold the rear spring on the C3 was stripped out which would be a disaster for the differential
04:22 PM JT-Shop: https://www.corvettecentral.com/c3-68-82/suspension/polyurethane-bushings/80-82-differential-carrier-bushing-set-583008
04:23 PM JT-Shop: it's all aluminum so not as stout as the older ones
04:30 PM JT-Shop: and not as heavy
04:52 PM roycroft: i'm finished, with 7 minutes to spare
04:52 PM roycroft: it wasn't even close :)
04:53 PM JT-Shop: you knock off at 3pm?
04:53 PM roycroft: yes
04:54 PM * JT-Shop is making some pizza sauce for tomorrow
05:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I made fish and chips for mom... (,frozen breaded fish). I didn't think it was that great.. too fishy. Mom liked it
05:35 PM JT-Shop: that's all that matters
05:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Yep
05:38 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> nippy here today. I ran the furnace in the polebuilding. I really should check the propane in the tank.. It hasn't been filled in years but never really gets used much
05:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> don't want to run the wood furnace yet - the house is fine with the heat pump (split unit) currently
05:59 PM xxcoder: good idea to have that when oxygen starts to snow
06:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is going to be in the 60's this week
06:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but currently it is windy and
06:01 PM xxcoder: 60c today for you eh
06:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> raining - 46f
06:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the condensate drain doesn't go outside - yet.. Can't rush into that. And I have filled a 5 gallon bucket over the last year or so
06:54 PM xxcoder: 3d printed concerete lathe. interesting https://youtu.be/Vne_7rnhub0
06:56 PM xxcoder: it uses that umm dentist drill motor? forgot exactly what its for, but high rpm and has controller so pretty good
07:48 PM roycroft: are you talking about a foredom flexible shaft machine?
07:50 PM xxcoder: that looks different but similiar
07:50 PM roycroft: oh, probably not
07:50 PM roycroft: i skimmed through the video quickly and did not see a foredom
07:50 PM roycroft: so i knew this would happen
07:50 PM roycroft: it's both bad and good
07:51 PM roycroft: i had to pull an ethernet cable to my library, which for reasons i won't get into right now, is where my computer staging cart lives at the momen
07:51 PM roycroft: t
07:51 PM roycroft: and that should have been simple, but i just knew that, since i moved the office network over the weekend and recabled everything neatly, once i got into my rack at home i'd end up recabling, labeling, and organizing things
07:51 PM roycroft: an i just spent the last three hours getting started on that
07:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> :kekw:
07:52 PM roycroft: but it's all going to be really good in the end
07:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I get that, makes perfect sense
07:52 PM roycroft: and it feels good to know that i'm the "settling in" phase of my move
07:52 PM roycroft: the "moving in" phase consisted of getting all my stuff here and getting what i needed functional as quickly as possible
07:53 PM roycroft: the "settling in" phase is going back and redoing everything right
07:53 PM roycroft: the server rack is in my studio, for example, but i only had one ethernet cable in the studio for the machines there - i have a phone, imac, and 3d printer that all require ethernet (and more things to come)
07:54 PM roycroft: i've been swapping that one cable back and forth between those devices for over a year
07:54 PM roycroft: now they each have their own permanent cable
07:54 PM roycroft: and the cable to the library is only half installed
07:55 PM roycroft: instead of just stretching a cable across the floor and running it under the door i'm installing it overhead along the wall, and about to drill a hole to push it through
07:56 PM roycroft: i just redid the ethernet cable to my office switch link, so i'm in the office making sure it works
07:56 PM roycroft: and it obviously (my office imac is hard-wired) does
07:57 PM roycroft: now to drill the hole and finish the cable pull
07:58 PM roycroft: i'm about to play musical chairs with some of my servers - i have a new one to install and and old one to remove, but the new one is not going to be replacement for the old
07:58 PM roycroft: i'll be migrating services from server to server until i get everything the way i need it to be, so i really need that library ethernet drop, as i'll be rebuilding a bunch of machines over the near term
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wow - I am down to the last roll of filament that dad had bought..
08:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It was fun here setting up the network. (the farm house) We had already had pretty good infrastructure.. but when I moved into the attic - there was nothing up here. I pulled network cable up here from the network cabinet..
08:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Put an access point up here - and this is also were the fiber from the tower terminates..
08:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> cameras on the house also terminate up here.
08:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (and outside access point)
09:08 PM roycroft: i'm trying to decide what to do about wifi in the shop
09:09 PM roycroft: i'm connecting from there to the house wifi now, but the signal is pretty weak
09:09 PM xxcoder: cannenta?
09:09 PM roycroft: i may pull an ethernet cable out there and install an ap in the shop
09:11 PM xxcoder: one I saw was interesting option was laser networking
09:12 PM xxcoder: guy used laser pointer and solar panel
09:12 PM xxcoder: suprising very effective
09:13 PM roycroft: laser networking works great except when there is rain or snow or fog
09:13 PM roycroft: then it doesn't work at all
09:13 PM roycroft: so in our part of the world, it is great for indoor links
09:14 PM xxcoder: isnt there freq of light that the atomsphere is transparent to
09:14 PM xxcoder: that specific nm ir
09:14 PM xxcoder: though water probably blocks it, to lesser extent anyway
09:17 PM roycroft: yes, it's the water that's the problem
09:17 PM roycroft: it doesn't block it so much as scatter it
09:17 PM fluffywolf: a directional antenna on the house aimed at the shop would give a better signal in the shop.
09:18 PM xxcoder: or cannenta
09:18 PM roycroft: the house is 4m from the shop
09:18 PM roycroft: an ethernet cable would work fine
11:48 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin moin
