12:00 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
01:31 AM Deejay: moin
04:20 AM Tom_L: morning
04:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:03 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:24 AM pere_ is now known as pere
06:41 AM JT-Cave: so far I've found 3 different ways to mount the active cooler on the rpi5
06:44 AM JT-Cave: dunno which one is correct
06:54 AM JT-Cave: it looks like most show the pads on the processor, power management and wireless/bluetooth chips
07:20 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/rpi5_heatsink1.jpg
07:20 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/pics/RPI5-nvme.jpg
07:28 AM JT-Cave: https://static.cytron.io/image/catalog/products/V-BO-PI5-HAC/v-bo-pi5-hac-b.jpg
07:29 AM JT-Cave: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0053/4721/3361/files/thermal_pads_1024x1024.jpg?v=1701221967
07:29 AM JT-Cave: that's where the pre-applied pads are placed
07:30 AM JT-Cave: https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Cooling-Aluminum-Temperature-Controlled-Dissipation/dp/B0CWGCHD7H?th=1
07:30 AM Tom_L: i think that's what i did
07:30 AM JT-Cave: yours has a pad on the cpu the memory and the I/O controller
07:31 AM Tom_L: the shiney one should have a pad?
07:31 AM JT-Cave: the lower left is the power management chip
07:31 AM JT-Cave: and the upper left is the wireless/bluetooth and that's where the pads go
07:31 AM Tom_L: ok
07:32 AM Tom_L: the tiny one with all the caps around it is pwr management?
07:33 AM Tom_L: so my 2 in the middle need to go left a chip
07:34 AM Tom_L: it would probably destroy the pad if i tried to move them
07:39 AM JT-Cave: I would assume as well that trying to move them would destroy them
07:39 AM JT-Cave: https://speedmedia2.jfrog.com/08612fe1-9391-4cf3-ac1a-6dd49c36b276/media.jfrog.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/31022436/image-2.png
07:39 AM Tom_L: actually that was pretty easy
07:39 AM JT-Cave: that's all the chips
07:40 AM JT-Cave: taking the active cooling thing off?
07:40 AM Tom_L: pic..
07:43 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/pics/Rpi5_thermal_pads.jpg
07:44 AM Tom_L: luckily they stuck to the aluminum instead of the chips
07:44 AM JT-Cave: the cpu one really got smashed
07:44 AM Tom_L: it's taller
07:45 AM rdtsc-w: I just got five heatsinks with the attached thermal tape (one kit for a 4 with 4pcs I think, then a big copper one for the CPU - nothing on the wifi module) - works great with a 60x10mm fan mounted next to it. The rip5 is above the 7c80 FPGA which also has a heatsink - taking no chances
07:45 AM JT-Cave: I gotta get my tweezers from the shop to put my pads on
07:45 AM Tom_L: make sure to remove the plastic... i found a cpu on a pC once that they didn't
07:45 AM Tom_L: it was brown
07:46 AM Tom_L: the pad that is
07:46 AM Tom_L: once approved.. i'll fix the 2nd one
07:46 AM Tom_L: be interesting if it affects latency one way or the other
07:48 AM rdtsc-w: i've found that it helps to heat the little ones up once placed (hot-air at 100c), and press them a little more - seems to stick better
07:49 AM rdtsc-w: and clean their tops with lacquer thinner or equivalent to make sure spotlessly clean
07:49 AM rdtsc-w: forget what my temps normally run at, but it's low, perhaps 35c
07:50 AM rdtsc-w: figured that'll give it a chance if ever run in a 105deg shop or something
07:51 AM rdtsc-w: 105F = 40.5C
07:58 AM JT-Cave: 40°F
07:59 AM Tom_L: 55F here
07:59 AM Tom_L: was in the 40's yesterday AM
08:00 AM Tom_L: latency base 5.5 servo 4.5 after 300 sec and still running
08:06 AM rdtsc-w: the rpi5 is a beast
08:07 AM JT-Cave: so step 1 after assembling the rpi5 is download and burn a normal 64 bit rpi os?
08:07 AM Tom_L: unless you want lcnc on it
08:08 AM Tom_L: burn the one off the lcnc site to the nvme for lcnc
08:08 AM JT-Cave: I thought you could add the real time kernel?
08:08 AM Tom_L: it is
08:08 AM Tom_L: afik
08:09 AM JT-Cave: I'll find out, just putzing with the sd card for now
08:09 AM JT-Cave: gotta find my keyboard and monitor
08:09 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:09 AM Tom_rpi5: uname -a
08:09 AM Tom_rpi5: Linux Debian12 6.12.11 #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT Mon Jan 27 00:10:15 AEDT 2025 aarch64 GNU/Linux
08:10 AM JT-Cave: I should go take the one out of the coop 2
08:10 AM Tom_L: that's what 2.9.4 has
08:11 AM JT-Cave: from the linuxcnc download page?
08:11 AM Tom_L: aside note: if you use the case that came with that kit, you will need to sand or otherwise thin the larger od of the button or it will be in reset
08:11 AM Tom_L: the yes
08:11 AM Tom_L: the button is too thick
08:12 AM Tom_L: it's in the screw pack and tiny
08:16 AM JT-Cave: mine appears to be ok I can hear the push button click when I push the black outer button ting
08:17 AM Tom_L: good
08:17 AM * JT-Cave starts his cold chicken day
08:18 AM Tom_L: ok both rpi pads adjusted
08:18 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Tom_L: lol - yes - I had problems with the power button. (I could not get it to 'click' when I would tighten the screws)
08:18 AM Tom_L: both mine were that way.. JT got lucky
08:20 AM Tom_L: latency base 6.3 servo 5.1 after 1500 sec and still running
08:20 AM Tom_L: 8 gears
09:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - these machines are really really good for mesa hardware
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have been running it on the plasma - no issues at all
09:07 AM Tom_L: even with no tweaks they're more than adquate
09:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> right
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> encouraging to see people having success with them
09:21 AM rdtsc-w: rpi used to be better-suited to smaller tasks; not anymore :)
09:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Well... I ran the rpi4+Mesa on a mill for years - no issues.. (there was a few issues initially - but got worked through). But the 5 is much much better
09:44 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have now downgraded one of the rpi4's to the monarch to run the spindle
09:44 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (hal only)
10:27 AM roycroft: i just found out that if i replace the rpi4 in my mini-router with an rpi5 i'll have to get a new power supply for it
10:27 AM roycroft: which doesn't bother me except i'm not sure it would fit in the controller enclosure without a lot of remodelling
10:28 AM roycroft: so now i have to be convinced that it's worth the upgrade
10:31 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:34 AM * JT-Shop waits for roycroft to convince himself that he "needs" a Rpi5
10:35 AM roycroft: i need an rpi
10:35 AM roycroft: and my application would be fine with an rpi4
10:35 AM roycroft: so the question is: get an rip4 or get an rip5 for the mini router and use its rpi4 for my other application
10:36 AM roycroft: which is an easy answer, except for the power supply issue
10:36 AM roycroft: complications always complicate things
10:43 AM JT-Shop: is the power supply that much different between the 4 and 5?
10:43 AM JT-Shop: I know the plug is different I "think"
10:44 AM JT-Shop: nope they both use usb c
10:46 AM JT-Shop: looks like the 4 usually has 3a and the 5 has 5a
10:52 AM roycroft: yes, that's the difference
10:52 AM roycroft: and my 5v ps in the mini router controller is 3a
10:53 AM roycroft: plus, it also powers the mesa board as well as the rpi4
10:53 AM roycroft: so i'm already pushing it
11:12 AM Tom_L: both psu are usb C
11:12 AM Tom_L: 5 needs a bigger supply
11:27 AM roycroft: looks like amazon are still pretty borked after this morning's outage
11:27 AM * roycroft will deal with that stuff later, after the internet calms down a bit
11:27 AM Tom_L: monday morning jitters?
11:28 AM xxcoder: too much coffee?
11:28 AM xxcoder: or not enough?
11:30 AM roycroft: there was a massive aws outage last night and the recovery is just starting
11:31 AM roycroft: someone was probably performing an "upgrade"
11:31 AM xxcoder: commit to live
11:31 AM roycroft: or maybe the cleaning lady plugged the vacuum cleaner into the wrong outlet
11:32 AM xxcoder: that reminds me about that old case of mysterous hospital deaths
11:32 AM xxcoder: turns out some cleaner unplugged to clean room
11:32 AM xxcoder: so patent died
11:50 AM rdtsc-w: RC, your boss probably had something to do with the AWS outage
11:50 AM rdtsc-w: xx, https://allnurses.com/quot-cleaner-polishes-off-patients-t25125/ woooowww
11:51 AM xxcoder: tht one is definitely urban legend, and I remember that one
11:55 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf7LuaLDnWU
11:56 AM JT-Cave: WOW Flex has HAL LED Labels now
12:22 PM JT-Shop: hmm somewhere I have an asus 15.6" touch screen...
12:22 PM JT-Shop: it was on the bp...
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> hmm - we have mice in the house... I think my parents have before - but I don't remember how long ago it was. Need to check door seals and things.
01:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is that time of year. They start looking for places
01:12 PM pcw_at_home1: We have a relatively old house (1935) and we had a mice problem until we put a fine screen on the old floor furnace (which is off for 9 months of the year)
01:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> There isn't much penatrating this place - but there is a lot of surface area and I am not sure how everything is sealed.
01:30 PM rdtsc-w: mice can squeeze through a surprisingly tiny hole - their logic is "if my head fits, the rest of me will too"
01:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> right. that is why I need to check doors - I know I can see light from under one of them.
01:48 PM Tom_L: just get a couple of outdoor cats
01:48 PM Tom_L: that's what the farmers here do
01:49 PM rdtsc-w: recently saw a historical trap - a big glass bowl of peanut oil (they get in and too slippery to get out)
01:56 PM xxcoder: saw that yeah a while ago
01:56 PM xxcoder: guy who showed it didnt like it
01:57 PM xxcoder: he prefer to either trap them securely without panic, or kill them instantly
01:57 PM xxcoder: not middle
02:00 PM Tom_L: giant bug zapper
02:04 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f3ekMqo4hg
02:04 PM Tom_L: wonder what they did
02:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad had the 5 gallon water bucket trap for a while. But he would foget about it and it would be really really bad..
02:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> in the shop
02:04 PM Tom_L: yeah
02:05 PM Tom_L: poison has the same effect... they hide and die
02:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - traps are ok - we attach them to a block of wood so they can't drag the trap away..
02:06 PM Tom_L: if they did, i'd let them :)
02:06 PM Tom_L: would be one tough mouse
02:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> when I reset the trap this morning - about 2 minute later I heard a snap. The mouse was dead when I got to it.
02:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> na - in the polebuilding - they can walk the trap far enough away that I can't find it. Then it starts to smell
02:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (and yes - partly because there is so much stuff)
02:14 PM JT-Shop: I tie a string on the trap so they can't drag it off
02:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - there is a short rope between the trap and the block of wood.
02:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> makes it so it is easy to take the trap outside to remove the mouse.
02:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 'rope' like heavy thread.
02:18 PM JT-Shop: ss leader
02:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oh - That is a good idea.. (I am not a fisherman)
02:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I usually buy little eyelets that I screw into the edge of the trap
02:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (and block of wood)
02:39 PM JT-Shop: there is a mouse hole downstairs behind a bookcase I need to plug up... had a black snake come in after a mouse I assume it could "smell" the trail
03:09 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you're running off the SD for now right?
03:19 PM JT-Shop: yup
03:21 PM Tom_L: did you get wifi etc all set?
03:21 PM Tom_L: looking over hal led a bit..
03:23 PM JT-Shop: no, I didn't mess with wifi
03:25 PM JT-Shop: noodle time
04:35 PM JT-Shop: got 3 rounds noodled just 4 to go tomorrow
04:46 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:15 PM Gothia1 is now known as Gothia
05:24 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> A few years back a mouse died in our fridge drip tray, it took us a long time to find the source of dissolved mouse odour...
05:25 PM JT-Shop: eww
05:26 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Something that small has no right to smell that much
05:27 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:29 PM Tom_L: is that why crude oil stinks?
05:30 PM Tom_L: i'm sure to the well owner it smells like money
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is years and years of evolution... Don't eat the rancid meat...
06:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - mom used to take care of the mouse traps in the polebuilding.. She is not moving as fast as she used to. So - I also set about 4 traps in the shop.
06:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no more mice in the house.. Yet
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I walked into the polebuilding and though - it smells weird..
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> finally figure out it was the briggs carb/gas tank I took apart. It is really really stale gas
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> skunkworks8841@: just add more hot sauce
06:22 PM xxcoder: enough hot sauce can even make grease ediable
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I would eat a spoon full of crisco when I was a kid
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> creamy...
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> my daughter made my moms recepie for chocolate chip cookies.. She won't make it again after putting all the ingredients it. She admits that they taste good.. but all the fat...
07:09 PM _unreal_: I need input what would you guys do with one of these from a linux USE point of view? https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/getting-started-with-the-tessel-2/what-is-the-tessel-2
07:09 PM _unreal_: HOME use
07:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> home assistant like things
07:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> simple automations
07:11 PM _unreal_: I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with it as a usable device in my home
07:11 PM Tom_L: xmas tree controller
07:11 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/environmental-monitoring-with-the-tessel-2
07:12 PM _unreal_: beyond an xmas tree controller though, halloween something something would be interesting.
07:12 PM _unreal_: LACK OF TIME at this point
07:12 PM _unreal_: hehe first line "Phant is No Longer in Operation"
07:17 PM xxcoder: lol https://merryco.com/ yule one is sold out again
08:49 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:01 PM wolfluffyf is now known as fluffywolf
09:02 PM xxcoder: lol one of unknown packages arrives
09:02 PM xxcoder: its rods extendable box apparently. small one. but hey its useful for me. even if one of rods was bent by bad packing
09:15 PM roycroft: blech
09:15 PM roycroft: my boss missed payroll today, but it wasn't his fault
09:15 PM roycroft: his payroll service uses aws
09:16 PM xxcoder: aws = awesomely shitty? man that amazon service is everywhere
09:16 PM roycroft: it gets even worse
09:16 PM roycroft: parts of duolingo are down
09:17 PM roycroft: that's gonna spark "no aws" rallys all over the world
09:17 PM roycroft: anyway, my boss will manually cut draw checks tomorrow if the payroll service is not back online by then
09:19 PM fluffywolf: none of the packages we delivered at work today got tracking uploads. same reason... corporate runs the tracking servers on aws...
09:19 PM fluffywolf: people are going to come home and find unexpected deliveries they never got updates for. heh.
09:19 PM xxcoder: lol better than unexpected package at all
09:20 PM xxcoder: I keep getting random mostly crud stuff
09:20 PM xxcoder: due to shipping errors I guess
09:21 PM fluffywolf: some shippers are probably going to be pissed that they don't have any proof of delivery, but we still decided it was better to get the packages out than to just hold all of them in the warehouse for tomorrow when the servers will presumably be up.
09:21 PM fluffywolf: staples especially loves being fuckheads.
09:43 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
11:57 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
