05:24 AM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> I need help, I started to calibrate the rails on the large cnc machine, but the problem is that the metal tubing (the frame of the machine) are not very true they have a slight bow down, and the rails also get bow down, that happen from gravity and the natural flex of the metal.
05:24 AM lcnc-relay: so any idea what can I use for straight reference? or any good trick or technique to use?
05:46 AM lcnc-relay: <rs> laserpointer?
06:16 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Maybe fill the tubes with sand and eopxy then clamp them down on a flat surface
06:18 AM JT-Cave: got a photo of the machine?
07:29 AM Tom_L: meisterdippel, like your new toy?
07:29 AM Tom_L: looks like a nice setup
07:29 AM Tom_L: document the steps from bookworm to trixie pls
07:30 AM Tom_L: also if you do an upgrade on the 2.9.4 ver you get 2.9.6
07:30 AM Tom_L: you may want that before you do the trixie tricks
07:45 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> i fixed the nvme on the linuxcnc bookworm-image, no update to trixie at the moment, and yes, nice toy 🙂
07:47 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> i have a general problem with 2.9.5 and 2.9.6 , broken halui pins/signals like halui.axis.x.pos-relative
07:49 AM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> I am still with 2.8 or 2.6 I am not in front of it
08:44 AM * JT-Cave almost wonders why tall garbage bags no longer fit tall garbage cans
09:00 AM JT-MShop: T-2h8m
09:32 AM JT-MShop: that is tall kitchen garbage bags
09:43 AM roycroft: shrinkflation
09:47 AM roycroft: all you need to do is buy a new garbage can
09:47 AM roycroft: which will be smaller than your current one

10:10 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> works
10:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:51 AM lcnc-relay: <die_limonade@> pink_vampire@: you can use epoxy to level the surface. There are 2 methods. First one is to use a low viscosity epoxy wich levels by itself. Or you can transfer a surface precision surface using epoxy. second option is more precise but you need a "master" surface
10:52 AM lcnc-relay: <die_limonade@> or weld flat bar onto it. stress aneal it and mill it
10:52 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Just scored a Keysight 34460A for half the average price 😃
10:53 AM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> die_limonade@: Too crazy for what I need, and it will not work because the rail is mounted to the side
10:53 AM lcnc-relay: <die_limonade@> or you shim it
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> pink_vampire@: Is this a wheels riding on tube arrangement?
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> No it is a 20mm hiwin style rail. One on each side
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Unless you reinforce it straighter somehow you're asking for pain
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> most important is that you figure out your realistic requirements...... wants and needs are sometimes very different
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> A photo would make it easier for peeps to give advice
11:00 AM * roycroft wonders how the universe exchanged information before the time of digital cameras
11:06 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> By mail, and the world was a better place
11:08 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> That's a bit disingenuous, I actually think the world peaked in the 90s
11:20 AM roycroft: i don't think it's peaked yet
11:21 AM roycroft: but it reached a new height in the '90s, and has been on the decline ever since
11:21 AM roycroft: i'm hopeful and confident that it will reach that '90s height and surpass it
11:21 AM roycroft: i'm not sure if that will happen in my lifetime or not, though
11:26 AM Tom_L: meisterdippel, that's cool
11:31 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> thanks
11:34 AM Tom_L: can you do postgui connections with it too?
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> yes
11:35 AM Tom_L: looks like maybe you did with the encoder
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> the right vcp frame is auto generated
11:36 AM Tom_L: nice
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> This is the exact lego kit I dreamed about when I was a kid...
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXjjXnLYg3c
11:37 AM Tom_L: does it use the standard widgets?
11:41 AM Tom_L: input spin boxes etc
11:41 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/axis_probe_routines.png
11:41 AM Tom_L: i added those to user vars
11:43 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> yes, and it can generate pyvcp, qtpxvcp, ....
11:43 AM roycroft: so is the rpi5 really all that much better than an rpi4 for running linuxcnc with a mesa ethernet board?
11:43 AM Tom_L: hands down
11:43 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> but special layouts are complicated, only tabs -> groups
11:43 AM roycroft: i may be getting another rpi soon for a different project, and i can use an rip4 for that project
11:44 AM roycroft: so perhaps getting an rip5 for the mini-router and redeploying the one that's in that machine now makes sense
11:44 AM roycroft: is the rpi5 the same form factor as the rpi4?
11:44 AM Tom_L: roycroft, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi4/Rpi4_histogram294..png
11:44 AM roycroft: i have a vertical din rail mount for the rpi4 that i need to use
11:44 AM Tom_L: compared to http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/Rpi5_nvme_histogram4.png
11:44 AM Tom_L: overnite test
11:44 AM roycroft: or replace, and vertical din rail mounts for rpis are hard to find
11:45 AM Tom_L: same basic form factor
11:45 AM roycroft: even printable ones
11:45 AM Tom_L: maybe different size hats
11:45 AM roycroft: folks seem to like to mount htem horizontally, for some reason
11:45 AM Tom_L: don't know enough about hats yeet
11:45 AM Tom_L: yet
11:45 AM * roycroft 's pis do not wear hats
11:46 AM roycroft: that reminds me
11:46 AM Tom_L: hardware something something... i forget
11:46 AM roycroft: i have an ex whose sister's husband refused to wear hats, even in the dead of winter
11:46 AM roycroft: he'd rather risk frostbite on his ears than wear a hat
11:46 AM roycroft: he was convinced that hat wearing causes baldness
11:47 AM Tom_L: i got a full kit with my rpi5 which for the first one i think is a good way to go
11:47 AM roycroft: this is the guy who, when we wen to vist for the first time, walked into the house while was reading the newspaper, and his reaction was first his jaw dropping, and then he exclaimed loudly "you READ?!?!?!"
11:47 AM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D2WYFS23
11:48 AM Tom_L: btw, 8G is more than enough
11:48 AM roycroft: so maybe not all that high up on the evolutionary scale
11:48 AM Tom_L: the new ones have 16 iirc
11:48 AM roycroft: the rpi4 in my mini-router has 4GB of ram
11:48 AM roycroft: 8 would be luxury :)
11:48 AM Tom_L: i dunno what mine has
11:48 AM Tom_L: but i have both
11:49 AM roycroft: but i don't need the enclosure or any of the cables
11:49 AM roycroft: so i would not get a kit
11:49 AM Tom_L: the 5 has 8g
11:49 AM Tom_L: the psu and active cooling are nice
11:49 AM roycroft: just the rpi and whatever cooling is needed for it
11:49 AM Tom_L: you can get that fan separate
11:49 AM roycroft: i have a psu for the rpi and mesa board in the enclosure already, all wired up
11:50 AM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Official-Raspberry-Cooling-Heatsink-Thermal/dp/B0D1JYTXSS
11:51 AM Tom_L: and if you want nvme i'd suggest a usb->nvme adapter for the pc
11:52 AM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MNFH1PX
11:52 AM Tom_L: skunkworks and i both went that route
11:52 AM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F389CXSX
11:52 AM Tom_L: takes the longer ssd but doesn't fit a standard case
11:55 AM Tom_L: with a wood enclosure the wifi may be fine for the outside world but doubt it would in a metal enclosure
11:55 AM Tom_L: meisterdippel got a 2 ethenet hat for his
11:56 AM Tom_L: https://cserver1.multixmedia.org/rpi5a.jpg
11:56 AM Tom_L: and standard size hdmi
11:57 AM roycroft: i don't know that i'd need that
11:58 AM roycroft: the mini-router uses wifi for the externale network and the ethernet port to talk to the mesa board
11:58 AM Tom_L: https://cserver1.multixmedia.org/rpi5b.jpg
11:58 AM Tom_L: https://cserver1.multixmedia.org/rpi5c.jpg
11:58 AM roycroft: and again, an enclosure is not a consideration, since it would be mounted in a vertical din rail bracket
11:58 AM Tom_L: me either but it is nice
11:59 AM roycroft: i added that cooling/heatsink thing to my cnc shopping list in case i get an rip5
11:59 AM roycroft: rpi5
11:59 AM Tom_L: i put my nvme on the bottom and i think you could run screws up from the bottom of the din rail mount into it's threaded holders
11:59 AM Tom_L: they are small though
12:00 PM Tom_L: i didn't get it for speed, more for write cycles
12:01 PM Tom_L: cooling snaps in like a regular pc fan
12:02 PM roycroft: i shouldn't have to write to the rpi5 often
12:02 PM Tom_L: i kinda wanted to test one too
12:02 PM roycroft: i just want to make chips :)
12:03 PM Tom_L: it will do that far better than the 4
12:03 PM Tom_L: skunkworks is testing software stepping
12:04 PM Tom_L: <skunkworks8841@> linuxcnc has been running 3 days? 2 days with a 40us base thread. No realtime errors
12:06 PM roycroft: meanwhile, my boss just had me clone a wordpress website and i cannot log into the clone, because of a redirect to a non-existent url
12:06 PM roycroft: he replaced the core wp-login.php script with some third-party login mechanism that does not work on the clone
12:07 PM roycroft: now the back and forth is that he keeps telling me to do things to fix the problem by turning off the caching mechanism or resetting permalinks
12:07 PM roycroft: and i keep telling him that since wp-login.php is missing i can't log in and do any of that
12:07 PM roycroft: and that he should NEVER install a login utility that completely replaces the distributed one
12:08 PM roycroft: he says he can't fix the problem until i do those things
12:08 PM roycroft: and really doesn't get that i can'd do those things unless i can log in
12:10 PM roycroft: i even copied wp-login.php from another site, but that's not working
12:35 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:14 PM lcnc-relay: <zachfrey@> Hi everyone, new to LinuxCNC and to CNC machining in general (but trying to learn as fast as I can). This is a really basic question, but if it's in the official docs I'm not finding the answer. Now that I have LinuxCNC up and running, is there a specific example that is best to run "out of the box"? I am looking for something where I can just pick the right setup and G-Code example, hit play, and see _something_ work. Thanks in...
01:14 PM lcnc-relay: ... advance!
01:19 PM Tom_L: the Linuxcnc text file is a goto for alot of beginners
01:19 PM Tom_L: loads when you start axis by default
01:21 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/screenshots/Rotary_Axis_screenshot.png
01:21 PM Tom_L: like you see there
01:21 PM Tom_L: i've never run it but i think it's scalable
01:22 PM Tom_L: there is a 3d chips example that is more complex
01:23 PM Tom_L: that is also popular
01:26 PM olfluffywf: I cut the linuxcnc text file as-is and it worked.
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <zachfrey@> Aha! That was it, I didn't have the home plus touch off quite right. Running for me now
01:28 PM lcnc-relay: <zachfrey@> Thank you!
01:28 PM Tom_L: may the chips fly in your boot and burn like hell
01:29 PM Tom_L: :)
01:34 PM olfluffywf: bbl
01:34 PM xxcoder: that reminds me of that time at work I was walking away from cnc machine cutting steel
01:34 PM xxcoder: one chip managed to go up and over the cnc walls (no top) and went over into inside my shirt in back
01:34 PM xxcoder: it hurt
01:34 PM xxcoder: thankfully it was very brief but yeah
01:42 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
01:43 PM roycroft: well, my pid controller should be delivered shortly
01:43 PM roycroft: that means that i am going to trip and fall over the one that i've been looking for right after the new one gets delivered
01:43 PM Unterhausen: we used to have a cnc'd bridgeport with nothing stopping the chips from hitting you. Lots of fun
01:44 PM Unterhausen: I tried the trick of ordering a new something to replace the one I lost and the same vendor I got the first one from tried to defraud me
01:45 PM Unterhausen: sent me a usb light
01:45 PM roycroft: auber instruments are very good about fulfillment
01:45 PM Unterhausen: when confronted, they said it was a gift
01:45 PM roycroft: did they send the correct item then?
01:45 PM Unterhausen: nope
01:46 PM roycroft: oh
01:46 PM roycroft: so you gifted them money
01:46 PM Unterhausen: refunded me though
01:46 PM roycroft: and in return they gifted you some junk
01:46 PM Unterhausen: yeah, no way I was plugging that thing into anything
01:47 PM Unterhausen: the problem was they were the only vendor on ebay selling what I wanted. Everyone else was selling an assembly that I would have to take apart
01:48 PM Unterhausen: at least they didn't try to pretend it had been delivered, although I think that was their initial intention
01:49 PM Unterhausen: I lost a mesa card once and ordering a new one worked, found the previous one pretty quickly afterwards
01:51 PM roycroft: some of the scammers are pretty good, but not as clever as me
01:52 PM roycroft: a few years ago i ordered a lathe extension bed for my small wood lathe
01:52 PM roycroft: we're talking about a medium size cast iron bed that weighs ~20kg or so
01:53 PM roycroft: the seller knew that paypal only tracked deliveries by zipcode
01:53 PM roycroft: so they "shipped" it to my zipcode
01:53 PM roycroft: i never got it
01:53 PM roycroft: i opened a claim with paypal
01:53 PM roycroft: they got delivery confirmation to my zipcode, and attempted to close the claim
01:54 PM roycroft: then i pointed out to them that what got delivered to my zipcode was a usps priority mail envelope
01:54 PM roycroft: and that the item that was allegedly shipped was a big chunk of cast iron
01:54 PM roycroft: i asked them how that could fit in an envelope
01:54 PM roycroft: then i got my refund
01:54 PM xxcoder: usps mail bag of holding
01:55 PM roycroft: and then i found out that this is a pretty well-known scam
01:55 PM roycroft: they ship an empty trackable envelop to a random address in the same zipcode
01:55 PM roycroft: hopefully paypal have tightened up their tracking verification system since then
01:56 PM Unterhausen: they just ship you junk to the right address nowadays
01:56 PM roycroft: yes, that's the new scam, i guess
01:57 PM xxcoder: I suppose way to counter that would be weight
01:57 PM Unterhausen: It works both ways, people scam sellers too.
01:57 PM Unterhausen: they just ship bricks
01:57 PM roycroft: yes, they do
01:57 PM roycroft: as i just experienced
01:57 PM roycroft: i just found out how people dispose of their broken fuji paint sprayers
01:58 PM roycroft: they purchase a new one from amazon, put the broken one in the box, and send it back to amazon
01:58 PM Unterhausen: take it back to home depot
01:58 PM roycroft: who then do not inspect it, sell it from their warehouse site, and i end up getting the broken/used product
01:58 PM Unterhausen: amazon is selling stuff like that as new nowadays
01:59 PM roycroft: that happened to me twice
01:59 PM roycroft: yes
01:59 PM xxcoder: its why I dont order from amazon much nymore
01:59 PM roycroft: i'm ok with it because i ended up getting a brand new one for >100% discount
01:59 PM rdtsc-w: Scamazon?
01:59 PM xxcoder: it didnt happen to me, but they dont care so yeah
02:00 PM roycroft: but it still required returning two of them and waiting almost a month before i got a working one
02:00 PM rdtsc-w: Fleabay is known for counterfeit chips
02:00 PM roycroft: i have to day, as sucky as they can be, they really kiss up to their business customers
02:00 PM roycroft: any time i have a problem on my business account they take care of it
02:00 PM roycroft: and i usually come out ahead
02:01 PM roycroft: on the personal account not so much
02:01 PM rdtsc-w: (chips being integrated circuits)
02:01 PM xxcoder: rs yeah I assume most stuff is clones on ebay. sometimes I dont care
02:01 PM roycroft: yes
02:01 PM roycroft: depends on the seller
02:01 PM roycroft: i get my vfds off ebay
02:01 PM xxcoder: there is no mixing of stocks from ebay tho
02:01 PM xxcoder: sellers hold their own stock
02:02 PM roycroft: but only from the huanyang store
02:02 PM xxcoder: *rd
02:02 PM roycroft: the mixing stock thing is a real problem on amazon
02:03 PM roycroft: unless you buy from a marketplace seller who does their own fulfillment
02:03 PM roycroft: but then you lose the benefits of prime
03:04 PM Unterhausen: supposed to have a hard freeze tonight, so I'm going to roast some green tomatoes
03:05 PM xxcoder: nice. im not too sure what i want for dinner today lol. I liked the rice meal yeserday, but I dont like repeats too much lol
03:05 PM xxcoder: probably just burritos
03:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> there was frost on the car this morning
03:07 PM xxcoder: I had mini heater on all night for first time.
03:07 PM xxcoder: woke up to nice temp of 75f, then after I turned it off, slowly went down tp 71f and stayed there
03:07 PM rdtsc-w: weren't we just slamming the AC?
03:08 PM roycroft: my heat pump is still in ac mode
03:08 PM xxcoder: I havent used ac for couple weeks now
03:08 PM roycroft: i hope i don't have to switch it to heat mode for a while
03:08 PM roycroft: it's not been cycling often for at least a week
03:16 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> https://www.theregister.com/2025/10/09/discord_photo_ids_leaked/
03:19 PM xxcoder: that probably is best posted in #meta as it pertains to discord only, and matrix and irc users wouldnt care ;)
03:23 PM roycroft: actually i think it's of interest to all
03:24 PM roycroft: it would be useful information to me should i ever consider setting up a discord account
03:24 PM roycroft: which i've never considered, and am now even less likely to ever consider
03:31 PM * roycroft is having one of those day
03:31 PM roycroft: i finally came up with a work-around to my boss' broken website, and was able to log into it
03:32 PM roycroft: shortly thereafter he emailed me complaining about something not working
03:32 PM roycroft: i replied that i'm not finishing cloning the site yet, and that a lotof things are broken, and to please let me finish cloning it before reporting any more issues
03:33 PM roycroft: five more emails and a phone call later, in which each time i've repeated the same thing, and i'm still working on fixing the site and he's still complaining about things i know about and demanding to know when they will be fixed
03:34 PM roycroft: my latest reply was "when i'm allowed to work in peace and concentrate on the problems without being interrupted constantly"
03:34 PM * roycroft is so glad he doesn't have adhd
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> xxcoder: Ok
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the other company that the owner bought - is changing internet and phone company. They were in and I stopped by just to make sure the internet was working (going to switch over on another day)
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> left.
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> then get a call from the head guy saying a bunch of the computers stopped working. (no internet or servers)
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (ip phones)
03:38 PM roycroft: and did you do your best phil hartman imitation?
03:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> they had hooked all the phones into their switch - and a good percentage of the phones pass network to the computers..
03:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> They all seemed suprised that it wasn't going to work that way...
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> skunkworks8841@: Reminds me of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastard_Operator_From_Hell
04:03 PM rdtsc-w: oh the good ol' BOFH :)
04:04 PM xxcoder: network is perfect and flaw-free. then the users come in
04:06 PM roycroft: well this one wasn't
04:07 PM roycroft: i still utterly fail to understand why lay people think they can configure computer networks that they don't know about when they know enough to go to a mechanic when they need their car fixed, a doctor when they are sick, or an attorney when they have legal issues
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I know none of these things
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Dunning kruger all the way!
04:26 PM rdtsc-w: "it's just a machine; how hard could it be?"
04:34 PM xxcoder: new ToT

04:43 PM JT-Mobile: yo
04:44 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> wait you guys go to doctors?
04:45 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> with US health insurance?
04:46 PM xxcoder: debt or death sometimes
04:46 PM roycroft: at least we old people do
04:47 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> kind of joking, but kind of not
04:48 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> am an old people myself, but at my income level, and with the huge deductible on my insurance, I haven't been to a doctor in a decade.
04:48 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I'll probably fall over with some massive cancer that would have been curable if detected early
04:48 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> _shrugs_
04:49 PM roycroft: and i should add, at least until medicare is taken away from us
04:49 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> that, too
04:49 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> these guys really seem to have a hardon for making sure working class people don't get healthcare.
04:51 PM xxcoder: thats getting into politics land
04:55 PM JT-Mobile: yup
04:57 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> sry, will shu'up
04:57 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> gonna go work on the mill in a few
05:01 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> at least, if this cat gets off me
05:25 PM JT-Mobile: Bowling Green the home of Corvettes but none to be seen anywhere
06:04 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> You all seen the rotarysmp/stefan livestream?
06:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I listened to it at work. It was awesome
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Enjoying it so far
07:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> stella has shop class at school and wanted to practice on the band saw...

07:56 PM _unreal_: messing with my solidstate i5 pc
07:56 PM _unreal_: no fans
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> getting sidetracked on figuring out how to make an acme threaded worm gear
08:09 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> would be lovely to do it as an external thread milling operation, since it's only a short part, but 3/4-5 is an odd size, it seems
08:09 PM _unreal_: do you have a thread mill that can do acme?
08:10 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> if I can model it in fusion, then probably?
08:10 PM _unreal_: O,o
08:10 PM _unreal_: acme is not like standard thread
08:10 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> understood
08:10 PM _unreal_: standard thread has a sharp point. acme is sqare
08:11 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I misunderstood your question, no, I do not have a threadmill for the size I want to do
08:11 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> _unreal_: yes, understood
08:11 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> been searching for one, and in 3/4 inch stuff, they only seem to have threadmills for 6, 7, and 8 tpi in acme
08:12 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> so I guess I'm doing it on the manual lathe
08:12 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> boo
08:13 PM _unreal_: what is your TPI?
08:13 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> 5
08:13 PM _unreal_: and pitch
08:14 PM _unreal_: https://www.fleetpride.com/parts/scientific-cutting-tools-power-tool-accessory-68242353?srsltid=AfmBOoroPo8QiBxTn5MzeEHmM0Tf8x1YzlhHKMxLhASFSGL0_dLsSksI
08:15 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> pitch would be .2
08:18 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> _unreal_: thanks, not sure that one works or not, but at $165, I am probably stuck just doing it on the lathe
08:18 PM _unreal_: it was the first thing I found with out full details
08:19 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> might make a few of my part and see if it sells before committing to very much, but I appreciate the help
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> the other cheater way I could do it is to buy acme threaded rod, and make them from that
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> stuff's not expensive
08:21 PM _unreal_: try ebay
08:21 PM _unreal_: I'm just messing with my solid state computer
08:22 PM _unreal_: trying to figure out what I want to do with it
08:23 PM _unreal_: I have this with 120gb ssd and 4gb ram https://www.ipcmax.com/index.php/en/nise300-nise-300.html
08:56 PM _unreal_: ???? struggling to burn a DVD :/
08:56 PM _unreal_: trying to burn ubuntu
09:03 PM roycroft: ubuntu goes on thumb drives, not dvds :)
09:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Haven't burned a DVD in years
09:04 PM roycroft: i still have a bunch of blank cds and dvds
09:04 PM roycroft: i have not inventoried the, but i know there exactly the same number today as there was 10 years ago, and possibly 15 years ago
09:06 PM _unreal_: i've burned several in the past 2 months cd's dvds
09:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Technology connectras on YouTube just did a video on buying physical DVD's. He bought current released sets and found them to be poor (lots of errors too). So he bought the original DVD sets and found out they were dual layer.. so the newer releases were re-encoded at a higher compression..
09:08 PM roycroft: it is rather ironic to be attemtping an os install on a machine with ssd storage using an optical drive
09:09 PM roycroft: at least it seems ironic to me
09:43 PM olfluffywf is now known as fluffywolf
09:43 PM fluffywolf: I don't have any dvds. or a dvd player. or a tv. lol.
09:44 PM * fluffywolf is watching This Old Tony's video on thread milling
10:04 PM _unreal_: still installing linux
10:04 PM _unreal_: installing ubuntu 25 on this solid state computer
10:06 PM * fluffywolf tries installing it on Usagi's non-solid-state computer
10:06 PM _unreal_: fluffywolf, I have this with 120gb ssd and 4gb ram https://www.ipcmax.com/index.php/en/nise300-nise-300.html
10:06 PM _unreal_: I'll be ordering the max ram just to upgrade it
10:07 PM _unreal_: 8gb not the greatest but regardless it will be nice to have a silent linux machine I can suspend when ever
10:07 PM fluffywolf: just about all computers are solid state.... Usagi is the only one I could think of that's not solid state and is in working condition. lol
10:08 PM xxcoder: isnt fans not solid state since it rotates? ;)
10:10 PM * fluffywolf thinks _unreal_ means a solid state drive, not solid state computer, of course...
10:11 PM fluffywolf: I really want to try writing a 3d rendering engine for his g-15, but I just have too many useful things I need to be doing.
10:12 PM _unreal_: I mean solid state computer
10:12 PM _unreal_: the nise300 has zero moving parts
10:12 PM _unreal_: nothing
10:12 PM _unreal_: the only active part is has are blinking lights
10:15 PM fluffywolf: with only 2K words of total memory, which has to include your code, the map, textures, and the working memory, it's questionably possible, but I'm not convinced it's not possible.
10:15 PM _unreal_: ?
10:16 PM fluffywolf: Usagi Electric is a youtuber who has, among a wide variety of projects, a fully working Bendix G-15 vacuum tube computer. The joke everyone always makes is "can it run doom?".
10:16 PM fluffywolf: I want to make some form of 3d rendering engine for it. It may be impossible, but that's no reason not to try. lol
