12:19 AM t4nk_fn: well, _unreal_, I still have that stuck cylinder inside my desk chair
12:34 AM t4nk_fn: I'm thinking about getting a vise
12:34 AM t4nk_fn: would probably be a smarter investment than a pipe wrench
12:34 AM t4nk_fn: though I'm not convinced I can twist it out, I might be able to squeeze the tube with the vise and get a good grip perhaps
12:38 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
12:48 AM Deejay: moin

04:06 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Anyone who's used a pulley to get encoder feedback from a lathe spindle, are there any gotchas with the pulley and belt type? I'm thinking a high torque type belt would have less slap and stretch, but would require a beefy mounting system on the encoder side.
04:08 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Spindle has a 48mm outer diameter, so most of the cheapo pulleys are too small anyway
04:08 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> You just have to make sure that it is 1:1.
04:08 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> because the index pin
04:09 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I'm planning to use AS5047P which is an absolute encoder anyways
04:11 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> also with absolute encoders - 1:1 is a must
04:12 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yeah, anything else would be a pita
04:13 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Need to find a pulley that can accommodate spindle diameter and something like an 8mm dowel pin for the encoder side
04:14 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> 3d-printing 🙂
04:14 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Or make some sort of hub for the encoder side, I'd lime to avoid tgat
04:14 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> * that
04:15 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> * *like ffs
04:17 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yeah, ideally not 3d printed I was hoping as the magnet should ideally be very accurately placed in the centre of the chip axis
04:18 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I have a big chunck of brass round bar I could use
04:19 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Could use 3d print for prototyping I suppose
04:20 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Does the tooth pitch matter/produce any noise?
04:21 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> i think so
04:36 AM Tom_L: morning
04:39 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Spindle/Encoder1.jpg
04:40 AM Tom_L: yours would be bigger of course
04:41 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Tom_L: Neat
04:42 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Lack of flanges not an issue?
04:42 AM Tom_L: it does rigid tapping just fine
04:45 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Cool, was thinking of having a live tool as well, for bolt circles etc
04:47 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/bp-knee-mill/encoder07.jpg
04:47 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/bp-knee-mill/
04:48 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Nice, though my mill has a pneumatic drawbar there, but that's a headache for another day
04:51 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Think I'm going to redesign the spindle power transfer on the mill, currently a manual variable speed pulley thing
04:52 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> But I have a fanuc 5.5kw servo spindle motor I want to use with vfd instead
06:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/eicM2FLbfghEzDZF7
07:08 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> skunkworks8841@: Nice and chunky, like it
07:41 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://electronicsam.com/images/matsuura/sensors1.jpg
08:23 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> hey - this is when I decided freecad was usable..
08:23 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/Bt7NNcsz2UtDtGDUA
08:50 AM rdtsc-w: Heh I used the same color filament to create a 2-piece metabo vacuum attachment for indoor concrete - design was a lot more involved than it sounds
08:53 AM rdtsc-w: for levelling bumpy concrete indoors, a large diamond disc on a slow-speed buffer (and a lot of water) works well
08:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have modeled a lot since then.. not a ton though..
08:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> all of the future metal parts for the emco
08:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think that was pla.. I think it fell over an broke so I printed it in petg.
09:01 AM rdtsc-w: PLA is brittle... found out that some PETG can be brittle if printed too fast
09:03 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Been irritated by orbital sander cable getting tangled in vaccum hose today should make some clips
09:04 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> rdtsc-w: I've done a fair bit of that, makes a hell of a mess even with dust extraction through, dust sheets definitely recommended
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Used one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B076VDCDJD
09:07 AM rdtsc-w: ditto; price is very reasonable :) use water - no dust at all... but slings mud everywhere :)
09:07 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> https://imgur.com/a/z0yyVbm
09:08 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Like splash it on the floor or some sort of hose attachment?
09:09 AM rdtsc-w: just keep a container of water nearby... put some on the floor and start grinding slowly... when it starts to get thick, add some more... vacuum up the slop
09:09 AM rdtsc-w: swarf, really
09:09 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> worked at a shop that took on rebuilding those concrete polishers
09:09 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I've done about a quarter of my garage
09:10 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Should check what hiring one of those upright ones costs
09:10 AM rdtsc-w: my "lab" in the basement had an uneven floor - leveled it nicely that way (then epoxied it)
09:10 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yeah would like to do that
09:11 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Currently making new garage doors because the old 70s ones started falling apart
09:11 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Going with swinging split doors to regain some space
09:12 AM rdtsc-w: tip for epoxy with top sprinkles - be very careful throwing the chips - one slip and it cannot be fixed (ask me how i know lol)
09:12 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> if money weren't an issue, I'd love to replace my janky swinging doors with a roll-up steel door
09:12 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Lol
09:12 AM fluffywolf: I wish I could afford a garage.
09:12 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> lesliet@: Problem is losing headroom
09:13 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> mine has pretty tall ceiling
09:13 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad always used low profile track setup. The door is a few inches below the ceiling.
09:14 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> also, the whole pole barn was badly built, probably by a previous homeowner. Been fixing issues as best I can on a limited budget
09:14 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> slidey doors could be cool
09:14 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> still feel like we did good getting this place when we did, though
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> huge shop space, a little over an acre, with fruit trees, big house
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> finally got a new roof on it, so no more water issues
09:16 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/HzHyn4XcWP3Z2hPn8
09:16 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you can see the 2 tracks..
09:16 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> nice!
09:16 AM rdtsc-w: could fit a boat in there :)
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> seems like a great setup
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> not a boat person
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> my swing doors are made out of 2x4 so you can imagine how unstable they would be over time and weather
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> could fit a hyster forklift in there to work on it over the winter.. lol
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Getting this inside was, interesting https://i.postimg.cc/bvxCDG5K/20190514-112035-1.jpg
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> did you pull the head off at the column?
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> or just tip it over 😉
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> lucid.nonsense@: the power drawbar setup on that... who's it made by?
09:20 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> (is reminded to go look at aluminum polishing stuff)
09:43 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> skunkworks8841@: Just tipped it over and took a few bits off. Had to prop the door up with some 2x4s. Then bolted a winch to the garage floor and pulled it into place
09:45 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> lesliet@: Align machine tools, no idea if they still exist
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> https://www.align.com.tw/index.php/other-en/powerdrawbar/
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Seems like they do
10:33 AM Tom_L: busy morning
10:58 AM JT-Mobile: Yo
10:58 AM Tom_L: yo
10:59 AM Tom_L: is empire the same one that makes wall heaters?
11:00 AM JT-Mobile: In Poplar Bluff they make fireplace inserts and primo ceramic cookers
11:00 AM JT-Mobile: Dunno what they make at the Illinois plant
11:01 AM Tom_L: i just noticed the heater i put in the basement when i dug it was empire
11:01 AM JT-Mobile: Empire comfort systems?
11:01 AM Tom_L: mostly for emergencies
11:02 AM Tom_L: https://www.northlineexpress.com/products/empire-10000-btu-blue-flame-natural-gas-heater-thermostat-temperature-control?variant=48046440808685&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=cse
11:02 AM Tom_L: similar
11:03 AM Tom_L: i have 2 in the shop
11:03 AM JT-Mobile: https://empirezoneheat.com/
11:04 AM Tom_L: just a curiosity
11:05 AM JT-Mobile: Waiting for the oil change on the C8
11:05 AM JT-Mobile: Got 1 bar in here
11:05 AM Tom_L: left you a deb
11:05 AM Tom_L: one bar seems to be enough
11:05 AM JT-Mobile: For this yup
11:06 AM JT-Mobile: Your link would not open
11:06 AM Tom_L: very similar to the one you posted
12:24 PM rdtsc-w: kinda off-topic programming question - on a Rpi4 with output to an interlaced monochrome CRT, what would be a good way to draw an oscilloscope-like waveform to it? 60 fields/sec ideally
01:21 PM Tom_L: The Raspberry Pi 4 can output a composite video signal, which is perfect for driving older analog displays
01:23 PM Tom_L: rdtsc-w, plug what you just said into AI :)
03:05 PM roycroft: grr, i think i'm about to blow up my roof design again due to another minor change i need to make
03:06 PM roycroft: i should go take a more advanced solidworks course, either in person or online, to help me design things that are more resiliant to minor changes
03:06 PM roycroft: i don't blame sw for this at all - it's my poor choices when doing the design in the first place
03:07 PM * roycroft does another git commit before doing the scary thing
03:07 PM roycroft: jane goodall has left the building :(
03:08 PM xxcoder: yeah
03:08 PM xxcoder: sad
03:52 PM roycroft: aol dialup service has also left the building
03:52 PM roycroft: they turned it off yesterday
03:55 PM xxcoder: aol was horrible. I had to get myself banned from them so they would stop charging me after I tried to close accoun
03:59 PM roycroft: i never used them
04:00 PM roycroft: not even in the american online days
04:00 PM roycroft: but i got plenty of their cds in the mail
04:00 PM roycroft: and stuffed into magazines
04:00 PM roycroft: and in swag bags at conferences
04:00 PM roycroft: i don't think they ever put their cds in boxes of cracker jacks, though
04:00 PM xxcoder: there was old lamp projects using all those cds
04:01 PM xxcoder: I wanted to do one of those lol
04:03 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Compuserve was the only thing we could get where I was
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Funny, since we were 20mins away from silicon valley
04:05 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> That was '92 I think
04:06 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Maybe 93
04:07 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Usrobotics 14.4 modem
04:07 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:08 PM Unterhausen: I'm surprised facebook doesn't know how to translate Vietnamese
04:08 PM Unterhausen: might be a good reason to move there
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Wild that French special forces boarded a Russian ship and today and there's barely a squeak of news about it
04:13 PM Rab: lucid.nonsense, lucky! At that point I was using a Wang 1200 baud modem I found in a dumpster, and I was glad to have it.
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Lol
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Did you have to eat toys?
04:14 PM Rab: No AT commands, to dial I had to use a telephone handset with the mic removed.
04:14 PM Rab: I may have chewed on a few toys in my time.
04:14 PM xxcoder: my first was 2400 baud because it was pretty cheap. 7k baud was out then
04:16 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Worst was when my parents thought it was conceivable that it was more important to use the phone
04:17 PM Rab: We had two phone lines, multiple computers, and a bunch of kids...we would pick up a handset and blow into the receiver to knock each other offline so we could connect.
04:18 PM Rab: I was the oldest so I was the worst, until the others caught on.
04:18 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I remember my chest falling when I could hear the handshake not being at full speed
04:18 PM Rab: haha
04:21 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Became deadly serious wheb q1testalpha came out
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> *when
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Overclocked kingston 486@133mhz
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Could play it at quarter screen size
04:25 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Until I got a pentium with matrox 2d card and seperate 3dfx orchid 3d card
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> It's funny, around that time we got used to computing power doubling every 6 months, then early 2000s everything slowed right down
04:30 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Since about 2018 we're getting back there again
04:47 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> https://www.theregister.com/2025/10/01/critical_red_hat_openshift_ai_bug/
04:49 PM Tom_L: us robotics 300 baud ftw
04:50 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Didn't know they were even around that early
04:50 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Last one I had was an isa 28800
04:51 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Then we got ISDN, 2 libes bundled for a whopping 128k
04:51 PM Tom_L: https://support.usr.com/education/modem3.asp
04:51 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> *lines
04:51 PM Tom_L: getting fiber next month
04:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> No chance of fibre here, arse end of nowhere
04:52 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Do have 300mbit 5g though
04:53 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> And multiples thereof for redundancy
04:54 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> UK has weird rules where landowners can refuse infrastructure being laid on their land
04:55 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Norway would laugh and tell you they're buying your land at the price they decide
04:58 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Tom_L: 1gbit?
04:58 PM Tom_L: 2.5
04:59 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> My parents have 10gbit, such a waste
04:59 PM Tom_L: it's about half what i'm paying cable now
04:59 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Yeah, cheaper to run I guess
05:00 PM Tom_L: city is funding laying the trunks
05:00 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Nixe
05:00 PM Tom_L: they've been diggin holes everywhere
05:00 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Nice
05:00 PM Tom_L: free installation for me and 2 free months
05:01 PM Tom_L: think they're trying to sell it?
05:01 PM Tom_L: i think cable will be short lived here
05:03 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Copper degrades, expensive
06:04 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, did you find a suitable nvme/usb for the pc?
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have not looked yet
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> busy day
06:07 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Enclosure-Adapter-External/dp/B07MNFH1PX
06:07 PM Tom_L: gonna try that
06:09 PM Tom_L: looks like it supports sata and nvme
06:11 PM Tom_L: with both pinout combinations
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> looks good. I will try it too
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have 2 - but don't know where the other one is - and think it only does the old style anyway
06:26 PM Tom_L: will find out tomorrow
06:27 PM Tom_L: will the hat take sata or just nvme ssd?
06:27 PM Tom_L: i have a gb ssd that a MB doesn't seem to like
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it takes the style that has only 1 key
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> one notch
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Well - I have one with 2 notches and it doesn't fit
06:38 PM Tom_L: ok
07:01 PM srk_ is now known as srk
08:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> hmm - I am missing a rpi5.. wonder were that is
08:21 PM rdtsc: they tend to have legs... those and 7c81 cards just ask JT
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Lol
08:24 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Same with boxes of wago connectors
