05:05 AM Tom_L: morning
06:15 AM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> morning
07:20 AM rdtsc: morning gents and vampires
07:33 AM JT-Mobile: looks like we will get some rain on the way home
10:41 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
11:47 AM fluffywolf: wtf. I ordered wheel bearings for my car from Rock Auto. I spent extra for National instead of mystery brand. Got four National 207 bearings here... and they're shit. like... several thous of slop.
11:47 AM fluffywolf: made in china.
11:47 AM fluffywolf: has National become utter shit and I missed the memo?
11:51 AM Tom_L: National bearings are not consistently made in one country; some are made in the USA and Italy, while others, particularly those sold by retailers like ClassicBroncos.com under the National brand, can be manufactured in China, depending on the specific product and supplier. The National brand is owned by The Timken Company, which manufactures in various locations globally, including the US, but also in places like China and Italy
11:52 AM Tom_L: luck of the draw
11:52 AM fluffywolf: there's also two obviously different bearings in the boxes. both types have too much play. made in different factories likely by different manufacturers, I would assume.
11:52 AM Tom_L: they still should meet some sort of 'class' of bearing
11:52 AM fluffywolf: yes, the class is "scrap".
11:53 AM fluffywolf: these would be tossed in the trash if I removed them from a hub.
11:54 AM Tom_L: carter, auburn, ntn, schatz are all supposedly mfg in the usa
11:55 AM Tom_L: maybe not NTN
11:56 AM fluffywolf: It's a 41 year old car, I'll probably just toss them in anyway, but it pisses me off that I spent extra money and got such shit parts.
11:56 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I generally use Timken or Koyo, or whatever Japanese brand I can find. Timken isn't quite what they were, but they tend to at least be acceptable
11:56 AM fluffywolf: if I wanted chinese junk with 5 thous of slop, I wouldn't have paid triple to get a name brand!
11:56 AM Tom_L: timken owns national which could also be made in china
11:56 AM fluffywolf: the timken seals I got are all taiwan.
11:57 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> Tom_L: timkens are currently made in several places, including china and india
11:57 AM Tom_L: right
11:57 AM fluffywolf: again, I spent extra for the name brand...
11:57 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> but the qc seems a bit better.
11:57 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I mean, not all Chinese parts are bad
11:57 AM Tom_L: yeah, they send all thsoe to fluffywolf
11:57 AM rdtsc: got four higher-end rotors through RA; all warped after 3mos
11:58 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> fluffywolf: I do get the disappointment. I work as an auto tech, and the quality of parts has declined drastically. It's not uncommon at all to have electronics out of the box that don't work, or worse, last a week and then fail
11:58 AM fluffywolf: grrr.... and the rack bellows they sent are for the manual rack, NOT the power rack...
11:58 AM * fluffywolf is getting increasingly pissed off unpacking these boxes
11:58 AM Tom_L: better have a talk with them
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I won't even buy from RA
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> only benefit is low cost
11:59 AM fluffywolf: I'm not surprised, of course, because I thought ones for the power rack were NLA and have been for a long time...
11:59 AM * rdtsc is learning his lesson
11:59 AM Tom_L: napa seems to have quality parts
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> some of them
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> they're a pretty good bet for pads and rotors
12:00 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> their fleet ball joints are rubbish
12:00 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> especially for Didge trucks, and we do a lot of those
12:00 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> * Dodge
12:00 PM Tom_L: not that fond of dodge anyway
12:00 PM fluffywolf: lol.... the UltraPower bearings, for about $1 each, for the transmission input shaft, feel much nicer than the expensive National wheel bearings.
12:00 PM fluffywolf: that cost 20 times as much.
12:01 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> surprisingly, the best I've found for Dodge trucks are the Precision brand from O'Reilly, the Moog ones are another brand that has dropped quality in favor of cheap
12:01 PM Tom_L: they have to compete
12:01 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> Tom_L: me either, but they pay my mortgage
12:02 PM fluffywolf: I don't like dodges, and don't work on them.
12:02 PM Tom_L: barden makes good bearings
12:03 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> long as I don't have to get very deep into their diesels (Cummins) it's not a big deal. Every make has a few not very good lines.
12:03 PM Tom_L: more for aero though
12:03 PM fluffywolf: unfortunately, the brick-and-mortar parts stores have pretty much stopped caring about my personal vehicle, and stock little for it these days. Also, even with my Oreilly commercial account, they're still more expensive... and Oreilly has been putting the worst chinese shit they can find in boxes lately...
12:04 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> thinking of that movie where the guy says he could poop in a white box, and sell it for less
12:04 PM rdtsc: prices double, while quality halves
12:04 PM fluffywolf: around here, dodge trucks are universally owned by overweight assholes with tinted windows, a lift kit that's never seen more travel than the speed bumps in the Target parking lot, and Trump stickers all over them... so part of my hate of dodges might just be from dealing with their owners.
12:05 PM Tom_L: heh
12:05 PM rdtsc: I'm waiting for the Dodge Impaler
12:06 PM fluffywolf: there's a stupidly sharp brand divide... work trucks are all Ford, assholes with tinted windows blowing through school zones are all Dodge.
12:06 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> wow
12:06 PM fluffywolf: and chevy trucks don't exist.
12:07 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> yeah, we get a-holes in all makes. But there are also the farmers/ranchers that actually need the towing power. I still laugh, though, when I see the stupidly high lift kits and the wheels sticking a foot out of the wheel wells.
12:07 PM fluffywolf: lesliet: stupidly high lift kits and wheels sticking a foot out the sides... and not a speck of dust or a scratch anywhere on the truck.
12:07 PM Tom_L: making up for something lacking elsewhere
12:07 PM fluffywolf: because they've never once been off road.
12:07 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> rofl
12:08 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> similar vibe to badly lowered cars with the rear wheels having excessive negative camber
12:09 PM Tom_L: they can't help it, they're still young and stupid
12:09 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> kind of a difficult thing, explaining to these kids that the only way to fix their terrible tire life is to unlower it, or go to a much better lowering kit that has better geometry
12:09 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> = lots more $$$
12:10 PM Tom_L: i've seen a few that lack springs at all
12:10 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> fluffywolf: most of our rednecks actually do go offroad in theirs
12:10 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> there is always mud on them when they come in for work.
12:10 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> Tom_L: mmhm
12:12 PM Tom_L: lesliet i forgot where you're located
12:12 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> Oregon
12:12 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> and fairly rural
12:12 PM rdtsc: Once was taking a big F350 to the woods for some off-roading, but it died climbing a highway overpass. Ended up pulling a rock out of the fuel filter lol
12:12 PM fluffywolf: lowered cars with bad suspension are pretty rare here... that crowd seems to like all-black BMWs, always driven like shit.
12:13 PM fluffywolf: the classic rice rocket is extremely rare.
12:13 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I worked at a BMW dealership for a while. It always cracked me up that when I stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks, they tended to stare at me in disbelief
12:13 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> "wait, BMW... but... they stopped..."
12:15 PM fluffywolf: lol
12:15 PM fluffywolf: so BMW owners aren't just assholes here.
12:16 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> we seem to have a demographic in my area (16-20yo?) that hasn't figured out yet that the ricerockets and humongous diesel 4x4's cost more to keep working than they make
12:16 PM fluffywolf: this area has weirdly skewed demographics because of (formerly) massive influxes of drug money, encouraging gang banger types to drive idiot cars.
12:18 PM rdtsc: a guy at my work has a totally-modded-out rock-crawler Jeep... over the past few years, he's been able to drive it about 40% of the time - rest of the time is engine / suspension rebuilds - perfect if you have lots of money and free time
12:19 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I can't really make too much fun of people with expensive hobbies
12:19 PM xxcoder: its a jeep thing
12:19 PM fluffywolf: my cars are a '84 subaru wagon, a '01 ford e-350 van, and a '68 jeep m715... the jeep is probably going to be sold soon, as I don't have the time and money to have a project.
02:11 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> whoops, i let the magic smoke out of a 2hss57 driver
02:12 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> looks like a "diode" sacrificed itself
02:12 PM lcnc-relay: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/970073721291292702/1419397832925774047/AP1GczPN_KUc7jlO-lSPCxGDBW2T6FSgGDdHnuzrvge-D8Xbh3W08JTBFP1GSgw1436-h1907-s-no-gm.png?ex=68d19cbe&is=68d04b3e&hm=f1cadd3fc9ab4738d5528547bebbb65401c230a942e2db27ea84e5c60f28927e&
02:12 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> looks like it says "AN" on it, and has 2 lines
02:13 PM rdtsc: ouch, some blistered (delaminated) board near it too
02:13 PM xxcoder: diede
02:13 PM rdtsc: or TVS
02:13 PM xxcoder: resistor near it look odd but might be just disortion
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> this driver and the original had the DC + and GND swapped, and i didn't catch it.
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> lemme try to get a more clear photo
02:17 PM rdtsc: that's likely gonna be a gonner... maybe could be that one diode but likely to have damaged other parts too
02:18 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/970073721291292702/1419399442871877797/AP1GczPvkxckIT_N-hFYkLTPWqRli5ckxkLJ6bs3z2IFIb44EuHoJewjzfEEjQw1436-h1907-s-no-gm.png?ex=68d19e3e&is=68d04cbe&hm=80e80d534f15cd5088d284b9723661bf9b2e8497e09464420d3d87ff7188a583&
02:19 PM xxcoder: wow blisted
02:19 PM xxcoder: blistered
02:19 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> how would i go about finding an appropriate replacement component?
02:19 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> yeah, it de-laminated
02:20 PM xxcoder: whats the shiny look around down below dead part
02:20 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> there is a clear glossy coating on multiple parts of the board
02:20 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> There's a few tuts on YouTube about repairing tracks
02:20 PM xxcoder: conformation coating to protect against elements?
02:22 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> i'm more concerned about figuring out the repacement diode
02:23 PM xxcoder: yeah
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Email the manufacturer and ask for the specs
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> already done
02:24 PM xxcoder: its nicely labeled on board so should be easy to id for them too
02:24 PM xxcoder: D14
02:24 PM xxcoder: diode having AN and 2 lines
02:30 PM rdtsc: https://smd.yooneed.one/code414e.html
02:30 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> sweet, thanks
02:32 PM rdtsc: afraid it's still largely a guessing game, there are more than a few which it could be... but this might be like a blown fuse in a car - replace the fuse and find out something else is shorted (not to be a downer)
02:33 PM rdtsc: replacing that one part should be cheap enough to try
02:33 PM rdtsc: gob on some solder and flux, heat both sides until it slides off
02:34 PM rdtsc: use solder wick to suck up all the solder from the pads, place the new part (in the same orientation) and resolder
02:36 PM rdtsc: if you don't have a suitable soldering pencil, I hear the new rage is USB-C powered ones - can use a USB-C battery pack and have it portable
02:37 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> i have a pinecil v2, love it
02:37 PM fluffywolf: I've been thinking of picking up a pinecil, and a dewalt usb-c adapter for their batteries, for easier portable soldering.
02:52 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> i have an Anker 45,000 mAh brick that I use
03:01 PM fluffywolf: I saw a news article a couple days ago that a fuckton of anker bricks were being recalled; might check if yours is one.
03:08 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Been thinking of getting a second ts101 and design a 3d printed contraption to turn them into tweezers
03:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> a fuck ton of several companies bricks have been recalled this year
03:18 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
03:24 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:26 PM Scopeuk: at a guess they were all running manufacturer reference design for a charge chip where that was then found to be problematic
04:07 PM Unterhausen: the local sportsball team somehow bumbled themselves into a win
04:08 PM Unterhausen: One of my anker portable chargers was recalled. I was a bit surprised to get a replacement. It's about twice the physical size of the one it replaced
04:10 PM Unterhausen: same capacity. Original was advertised as "smallest and lightest"
05:07 PM JT-Shop: Flex GUI HAL LED's are almost done
05:07 PM JT-Shop: I think
06:07 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <nein.9s@> I've always wondered - my oster classic 76 hair clipper has some plastic parts inside that are insanely wear resistant and hard and I want to know what they're mad of. For example: https://leadingedgesharpening.ca/product/oster-drive-lever-a5-76/?srsltid=AfmBOorrnYXKDa6PZ0jnGgUSoxJnGNAb4Oj57aeTRveAt8vnoHUVLMSf this "plastic" part is what directly interfaces with the blade to move it back and forth. The blades are made of very very...
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: ... hard steel
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <nein.9s@> This part seems to last forever and shows very little wear. I don't think it's a thermoplastic
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <nein.9s@> Any guesses as to what it may be made of? perhaps some kind of thermoset polymer? I want to make some things out of this kind of material
06:31 PM Tom_L: ask google
06:38 PM Unterhausen: bakelite is pretty wear resistant, I think
06:40 PM Unterhausen: you can still buy bakelite sheets
06:47 PM Tom_L: also fiber impregnated plastics
06:49 PM Tom_L: nylon, teflon, delrin...
06:51 PM Tom_L: The Oster A5/76 Drive Lever is made of
06:51 PM Tom_L: nylon plastic. It is also known as the "tongue" or "blade guide," and its function is to move the clipper blade back and forth
06:51 PM Tom_L: says google
06:52 PM Tom_L: The specific type of nylon used is not detailed
07:48 PM rdtsc: logarithm
07:58 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> dik but meshcam looks way easier and usable to use on 3 axis
07:59 PM rdtsc: nylon would make sense; very tough and wear-resistant when injection-molded
08:01 PM xxcoder: insane https://seattleultrasonics.com/
08:01 PM rdtsc: saw that yesterday, cool :)
08:01 PM xxcoder: I want one lol but so expensive
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i have one
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> only 60liters fits in
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> cost like 8k
08:02 PM xxcoder: thats insane. one I linked to is $400 for knife
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> ah knife
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> not ultrasonic cleaner, lmao
08:03 PM xxcoder: lol
08:03 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i have 1$ knifes and they are useless
08:04 PM xxcoder: I only have one knife lol
08:04 PM Tom_L: dishwasher safe?
08:04 PM xxcoder: I sharpen it myself, which is bit annoying
08:04 PM rdtsc: knife has a button... press it, and it effectively reduces cutting force by half
08:04 PM xxcoder: tom I would never ever put knives in dishwasher
08:04 PM xxcoder: its like sandblasting edge
08:05 PM xxcoder: rd thats cool
08:06 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> same same, I just wash the knives by hand right after using them'
08:06 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> knife handles tend not to like dishwashera
08:07 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't either but it was a valid question
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> true
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> Tom_L: what cam software do you use?
08:07 PM Tom_L: smartcam
08:07 PM Tom_L: freeform
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> meshcam have no feed settings for each axis
08:08 PM xxcoder: yeah, I wouldnt with electric knife, evem if its made to be safe there. because it probably wouldnt be waterproof forever
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> trying to remember if meshcam was one of the ones I tried
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> settled on fusion as the best bang for the buck
08:09 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> ah, Tom, both is expensive
08:11 PM xxcoder: I wonder if freecad cam would work for you
08:11 PM Tom_L: i used it commercially for a while
08:11 PM xxcoder: its a hit or miss one, great whn its a hit
08:12 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> meshcam is pretty good but missing some basic settings, more like its for wood
08:12 PM Tom_L: i'd rather have a home run
08:13 PM Tom_L: in it's day smartcam was the one to have but now mastercam has taken over for the most part
08:13 PM xxcoder: its excellent one, but too expensive for person playing around in hobby shop in most case
08:14 PM Tom_L: https://onecnc.com/en/home
08:15 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> not even demo
08:16 PM Tom_L: i think JT may have used that but i'm not positive
08:16 PM xxcoder: I definitely cant afford onecnc. its quote site
08:17 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> lol, if I have to ask, i probably can't afford it
08:17 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> so staying with fusion360
08:17 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> works pretty well for me at a hobby level
08:18 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i dont like it because slow cloud based
08:18 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> yeah, I could live without the cloud stuff
08:18 PM Tom_L: just about everything is now
08:19 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> never found a foss one that I could figure out how to make it work for me. disclaimer: I am not great at figuring out software when it's not intuitively obvious to someone who doesn't code for a living
08:19 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> helps if there are lots of diy vids
08:19 PM Tom_L: https://carbide3d.com/carbidecreate/
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> carbide is pretty good, yeah
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I use it for making signs
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i check
08:20 PM Tom_L: https://easel.com/
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> I think pro was like 130 usd? for a permanent license
08:22 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> this carbide is 2 d tool
08:22 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> pro is 3d
08:22 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> and not possible to try...
08:22 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> not as advanced as fusion, but good for woodworking & cnc routers
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> they let you dl 2d to play with, but I think to let it export g-code, you need pro
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> it's made to work with shapeoko routers
08:23 PM lcnc-relay: <lesliet@> but pro will export g-code that works on generic 3 axis stuff
08:26 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> anybody have pro installer?
