12:57 AM Deejay: moin
02:41 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:42 AM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> good morning
04:20 AM Tom_L: morning
06:17 AM JT-Cave: and now my package magically is in PB
07:00 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJSie_3ncc8&t=2s
09:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> didn't I just say it was friday?
09:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this week went fast.
09:40 AM JT-Shop: heading to St. Louis in a bit for the weekend
09:48 AM rdtsc-w: long weekend with Monday?
09:52 AM JT-Shop: actually we are coming home Sunday afternoon
09:53 AM JT-Shop: mrs birthday today
09:56 AM * roycroft is looking forward to the long weekend
09:56 AM roycroft: although tomorrow i have to get 1-1/2 yards of gravel for my driveway and spread and compact that before i can start on the roof projecdt
09:57 AM roycroft: i'm looking forward to that being done, but i'm not looking forward to doing it
09:57 AM roycroft: i need more than that, but my pickup is a 1 ton, and even 1 yard is pushing things a bit
09:58 AM roycroft: but at ~$40/round trip for fuel, i'm going to haul as much as i possibly can each trip
09:58 AM roycroft: the fuel costs almost as much as the load, but i would pay even more if i bought it from the local quarry
10:05 AM Tom_L: what would a dump truck full cost instead?
10:06 AM Tom_L: how many pickup loads....
10:11 AM roycroft: the gravel would be cheaper if i ordered a 5 yard or more load, but they would charge hundreds of dollars for delivery
10:11 AM roycroft: the local quarry would not be cheaper
10:12 AM roycroft: plus, i want 1/4"-1/2" minus, and the local quarry only have 3/4" open and 3/4" minus
10:12 AM roycroft: this is the big drawback of living so far from town
10:13 AM roycroft: but i should only need to regravel once every few years, so i'll be ok with it
10:13 AM roycroft: the drive home should be fun with all that ballast, though
10:13 AM Tom_L: i've had truckloads of dirt delivered but it was a long time ago was why i wondered
10:13 AM Tom_L: i've done pickup loads of sand too
10:13 AM Tom_L: not that much fun
10:13 AM JT-Shop: I get it by the truck load and the quarry is 1 mile away from me
10:14 AM roycroft: 1.5 yards is about 2 tons, so double the rated capacity of the pickup
10:15 AM roycroft: when i lived in eugene i could get rock and soil about 5 miles from my house
10:15 AM roycroft: i've done multiple loads/day
10:18 AM roycroft: i might just get 1 yard - that is all i really need for what i'm about to do
10:18 AM roycroft: fuel cost will be about the same for 1 as 1-1/2
10:18 AM roycroft: but i've not hauled a heavy load up here yet, so maybe going for something closer to the rated capacity of the pickup would be prudent this time
10:19 AM roycroft: plus, shoveling all that gravel won't be fun and won't be great for my back
10:21 AM rdtsc-w: JT, happy birthday from the interwebs, mrs! :)
10:27 AM roycroft: the first football game of the season is tomorrow
10:27 AM roycroft: note to self: completely avoid downtown eugene tomorrow
10:28 AM roycroft: fortuantely i can avoid almost all the traffic by taking an alternate route to the quarry
10:28 AM roycroft: i'm glad i found out about it - usually i don't know if there's a game until i'm stuck in traffic
11:53 AM xxcoder: roy that reminds me of that post about guy who used scanner to scan size of piles and caught suppler shorting
11:54 AM xxcoder: guy ordered one load of something and 3 loads of something else. (soil or gravel whatever cant remember)
11:54 AM roycroft: if it's delivered it can be hard to verify
11:55 AM roycroft: when i pick it up it's easy - they use 1/2 yard buckets on the loaders
11:55 AM roycroft: so i just watch for how full each bucket is, and how many scoops i get
11:59 AM xxcoder: cool. :) speaking of cool, its nice and cool clouds here
11:59 AM roycroft: it's overcast here, but that's mainly because of smoke
12:00 PM roycroft: aqi is <100 at the moment, but it could get worse any time
12:00 PM xxcoder: 36 here apparently
12:01 PM roycroft: and i heard on the news this morning that some firefighters did not show up for work at the emigrant fire, because a couple days ago ice raided a fire crew in the olympic mountains and hauled away a firefighter
12:02 PM roycroft: the emigrant fire is the one just to the southeast of here which is causing the smoke we're getting
12:03 PM roycroft: but at least the red flag warning is gone
12:30 PM rdtsc-w: so I just told my boss, "ya know, the moment everyone is walking on eggshells here, it will all end, right?" He didn't quite know how to respond to that - sorry if the blunt truth is hard to swallow.
12:31 PM roycroft: layoffs coming?
12:38 PM rdtsc-w: no idea... mangement is attempting to micro-manage electronics repair technicians, a very hard job already, and all the techs are fed up with it
12:38 PM roycroft: bean counters trying to do engineering work is almost always bad
12:40 PM Tom_L: there is a place in the world for bean counters i just have no idea where that would be
12:41 PM rdtsc-w: in a bean field :)
12:42 PM Tom_L: hand them the iron and say fix it or get the f out
12:49 PM roycroft: i needed to upgrade our billing software today
12:50 PM roycroft: i told my boss it would take about 20 minutes and he repeatedly asked me if i was sure it would only take that long, and kept stressing that we could not have prolonged downtime
12:50 PM roycroft: i just completed it in 19 minutes and 53 seconds :)
12:50 PM xxcoder: scotty averted lol
12:50 PM roycroft: that's from the time i took it offline to do backups until it went back online
12:51 PM roycroft: well if i were scotty i'd have told him it would take an hour
12:51 PM roycroft: then 20 minutes would be a miracle :)
12:51 PM xxcoder: yep lol
12:51 PM Tom_L: the ones that want to work can do their job better when left alone
12:51 PM Tom_L: the ones that don't never will
12:52 PM Tom_L: the balance is tipping
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I was told when I was out of college that I was going to teach the maintenance department how to do board level trouble shooting...
12:53 PM roycroft: nobody knows what that even is any more, skunkworks8841
12:53 PM Tom_L: my kid has been called back a couple times on jobs he's left because they didn't know how something worked
12:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this was in the 90's
12:54 PM roycroft: in the best of circumstances these days you replace boards randomly until the thing starts working again
12:54 PM Tom_L: he did it for his worker friends, not the company
12:54 PM roycroft: but most of the time, when something breaks, you just replace the whole thing
12:54 PM Tom_L: but he still wouldn't disclose what he did
12:55 PM Tom_L: control featues they knew nothing about
12:56 PM Tom_L: must be nap time
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it almost makes me want a model t...
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7mPbBxNBEo
01:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> almost
01:09 PM xxcoder: oh hey bad obession is finally updating on escargot
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oh!
01:28 PM roycroft: my wire is out for delivery
01:28 PM roycroft: i'll find out today if i've been scammed or not
01:30 PM DaViruz: xxcoder: with quite the cliffhanger to boot
01:30 PM xxcoder: yeah. its just update on news
02:20 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:22 PM JT-Mobile: yo
02:26 PM lcnc-relay: <Mister Wallace> Yo
02:27 PM JT-Mobile: made it to St. Louis
02:27 PM roycroft: are you going to meet someone at the fair?
02:28 PM JT-Mobile: what fair?
02:28 PM lcnc-relay: <Mister Wallace> Nice, I’m about to land in Indianapolis
02:28 PM roycroft: in st louis
02:28 PM roycroft: you know - meet me in st louis, louis, meet me at the fair
02:28 PM pcw-home: maybe <JT-Mobile> is not a fan of musicals
02:28 PM JT-Mobile: didn't know they had one... we are up here for the mrs birthday and a trip to the zoo
02:29 PM JT-Mobile: I did watch State Fair a few times
02:29 PM JT-Mobile: but that's a different state iirc
02:30 PM pcw-home: Our State fair is a great State fair...
02:30 PM roycroft: does your state fair have deep fried butter?
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <Mister Wallace> All state fairs have deep fried butter
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <Mister Wallace> It’s the rules
02:32 PM roycroft: i thought only iowa had that
02:33 PM roycroft: wisconsin probably had deep fried cheese curds
02:33 PM xxcoder: if deep fried tastes good, would deep fried deep fried stuff taste better?
02:33 PM roycroft: i wonder if minnesota has deep fried hot dish
02:34 PM JT-Mobile: our state fair is close to kansas city
02:38 PM JT-Mobile: the problem I have with state fairs is I don't like crowds
02:40 PM Unterhaus__ is now known as Unterhausen
02:41 PM Unterhausen: I wasn't too impressed with the Iowa state fair when I went, but I didn't try the deep fried butter
02:42 PM Unterhausen: around here they have what's called a "grange fair." The big attraction is setting up fancy tents, people are on a waiting list for decades
02:44 PM JT-Mobile: https://grangefair.com/
02:44 PM JT-Mobile: that one?
02:52 PM Unterhausen: that's it
03:01 PM JT-Mobile: I found where we are having breakfast Sunday morning
03:01 PM JT-Mobile: https://bowoodbyniche.com/breakfastlunch
03:07 PM roycroft: i haven't been to the oregon state fair in decades
03:07 PM roycroft: last time i went we saw little richard
03:07 PM roycroft: so that should tell you how long it's been
03:08 PM * JT-Mobile has never been to a state fair or a concert
03:14 PM JT-Mobile: Tom_L, break something in flex so I have something to do for a few hours
03:14 PM roycroft: if you're bored maybe you could go to a concert? :)
03:16 PM JT-Mobile: we have reservations at 6pm for dinner so not enough time
03:16 PM JT-Mobile: and I don't like crowds...
03:20 PM JT-Mobile: and I can't wear my T shirt and hat because they have a dress code... that's a first for me
03:22 PM JT-Mobile: we are staying 7 minutes from the zoo
03:47 PM roycroft: my boss finally approved my vacation time
03:47 PM roycroft: so i'll acdtually be able to work on my roof all day long for a week
03:50 PM JT-Mobile: nice
03:51 PM roycroft: yeah, that will help a lot
03:51 PM JT-Mobile: you got all the materials on hand?
03:51 PM roycroft: besides just having more time, i have a lot more energy in the morning than i do at the end of the day, even when i'm sitting at my desk all day
03:51 PM roycroft: no, i'm ordering materials early next week
03:52 PM pcw is now known as Guest4609
03:52 PM roycroft: this weekend i'm putting down some gravel on my driveway, moving my old portable garage to use as a shelter/work area for the roof framing, installing the new portable garage, and possibly starting work on a scaffold
03:52 PM roycroft: next week i'll get the scaffolding done and order materials
03:52 PM roycroft: and next weekend i can start the joinery work on the timber frame portion
03:53 PM JT-Mobile: cool
03:53 PM roycroft: as soon as that's done i'll start doing the tear-off and building the new roof, in 1/3 at a time sections
03:54 PM roycroft: i need to take inventory on nails - i think i have enough, but if i don't i want to get them before i stgart
03:54 PM roycroft: what i don't want to do is start making trips to town to get things i forgot or ran short on
03:55 PM JT-Mobile: when I added on to my house in Pascagoula Ms the framing was white oak and I had to drill pilot holes for the nails
03:55 PM JT-Mobile: the house was build during ww2
03:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we built most of the buildings around here using oak. Yes - pre-drilling and bar soap.
03:56 PM roycroft: i'll be using douglas fir for the timber frame portion
03:56 PM roycroft: no nails in that part
03:56 PM roycroft: i'll be attaching the roof to the side walls with structural screws
03:56 PM roycroft: but the timber frame roof itself will be pegged mortise and tenon
03:57 PM roycroft: the rafters will be nailed
03:57 PM roycroft: and probably douglas fir, but maybe hemlock
03:57 PM roycroft: 5/8" osb sheathing, and fiberglass architectural shingles
03:58 PM lcnc-relay: <asicresisteur@> thought my machine was linuxcnc which is why I'm here but I'm not even sure now 🥲
03:59 PM JT-Mobile: hmm I can't remember the bash line to install flex with gdebi
04:07 PM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> JT-Mobile tru "sudo dpkg -i flex.deb"
04:07 PM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> *try
04:08 PM JT-Mobile: hmm -i forgot that
04:08 PM JT-Mobile: thanks
04:08 PM lcnc-relay: <TurBoss> 🙂
04:08 PM JT-Mobile: echo 'somepassword' | sudo -S gdebi -i /home/john/github/flexgui_1.3.0_amd64.deb
04:09 PM JT-Mobile: I'll try that as soon as apt is done
04:15 PM JT-Mobile: how's it going over there?
04:24 PM Tom_L: JT-Mobile must be bored
04:24 PM JT-Mobile: yup
04:25 PM Tom_L: been out grocery shopping
04:25 PM JT-Mobile: fun
04:26 PM Tom_L: just sudo gdebi file
04:27 PM JT-Mobile: I get an error
04:27 PM Tom_L: that's what i use
04:27 PM JT-Mobile: right not apt is busy
04:27 PM Tom_L: i use the full path if that matters
04:27 PM Tom_L: /home/xxx
04:28 PM JT-Mobile: I do it in a bash file so I can just press a button
04:28 PM Tom_L: so do i
04:28 PM Tom_L: from the pull to the push is automated
04:28 PM JT-Mobile: how do you pass the password to sudo?
04:28 PM Tom_L: umm
04:28 PM JT-Mobile: echo 'somepassword' | sudo -S gdebi -i /home/john/github/flexgui_1.3.0_amd64.deb
04:29 PM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> Hi everyone
04:29 PM JT-Mobile: hi
04:30 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:30 PM Tom_dev: sudo dpkg -i flexgui*amd64.deb
04:30 PM Tom_L: i guess i use dpkg there
04:30 PM Tom_L: but that line works
04:30 PM JT-Mobile: ok
04:30 PM JT-Mobile: I forgot to copy my bash files to this pc
04:31 PM JT-Mobile: so you have to type in the password for sudo?
04:31 PM Tom_L: nope
04:31 PM Tom_L: iirc there may be a switch for gdebi for that
04:31 PM Tom_L: i forget
04:32 PM Tom_dev: there arem
04:33 PM JT-Mobile: I didn't see a switch for gdebi that is -i
04:33 PM Tom_dev: t many switches for gdebi
04:33 PM Tom_dev: no that's dpkg
04:34 PM JT-Mobile: and maybe I use dpkg but I forgot
04:34 PM Tom_L: either one works
04:34 PM JT-Mobile: aot is at 95%
04:36 PM JT-Mobile: mrs is cutting some logs in the next room LOL
04:38 PM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> I have a question about a stepper driver (cheap TB660), if I set the driver to 5A, that mean that it push 2.5A per coil of the stepper of 5A per coil?
04:39 PM Tom_L: i'd say 5
04:39 PM * Tom_L rolls the dice again
04:39 PM JT-Mobile: roycroft, may know
04:41 PM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> the reason I asked is because I want to use 4 pin GX16 connectors for the steppers, that is 5A and they are rated 5A
04:41 PM JT-Mobile: dpkg seemed to work
04:44 PM rdtsc: stepper system info https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNTuMiNC2TU
04:53 PM roycroft: i don't know for sure, but i agree with tom_l
04:54 PM roycroft: it should only be powering one coil at a time, unless it's microstepping, in which case it will likely split the current
04:54 PM roycroft: and make sure that the amperage rating for your connectors is for dc, not ac
04:55 PM * roycroft just decided to head down to eugene today to pick up gravel instead of tomorrow, to avoid the game traffic
04:55 PM Tom_L: merican amps too not chinaco
04:56 PM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> this is what I have here.
04:56 PM lcnc-relay: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09DGN29NT
04:56 PM roycroft: i also decided to just get 1 yard, to see how well that rides
04:57 PM Tom_L: what's that weigh?
04:57 PM Tom_L: you don't wanna fix more axles...
04:58 PM roycroft: a yard of gravel this time of year weighs about 1.35 tons
04:58 PM roycroft: in the winter it weighs significantly more
04:58 PM roycroft: my pickup is a super duty - it should be able to handle well over its rated load capacity
04:59 PM roycroft: but 1.5 yards might be pushing it
04:59 PM roycroft: that would be double the rated capacity
04:59 PM roycroft: almost
04:59 PM roycroft: actually, it is double - 2022lbs
04:59 PM roycroft: 2025lbs, rather
05:00 PM xxcoder: the years is heavy
05:00 PM roycroft: besides, if i only get one yard i only have to shovel, level, and tamp one yard :)
05:00 PM xxcoder: joking aside, yeah you would need to go uphill with that weight too
05:00 PM roycroft: sure, but not too much
05:00 PM Tom_L: just go slow and accel the same
05:01 PM roycroft: and my engine is a 7.3l diesel
05:01 PM roycroft: i'll have no problem pulling at all
05:01 PM Tom_L: i'd be more worried about the parts further down the chain
05:02 PM roycroft: i probably won't even feel it except when i'm going around curves at speed
05:02 PM roycroft: it might want to fishtail a little when i do that
05:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:02 PM roycroft: but yeah, i'll take it easy
05:02 PM Tom_L: should be a nice smooth ride
05:02 PM roycroft: it's friday on a holiday weekend
05:02 PM roycroft: there will be like 10,000 rvs driving up past where i live to get to central oregon for the weekend
05:02 PM Tom_L: the ride not the journey
05:03 PM roycroft: speed will probably be 35mph all the way up today
05:03 PM roycroft: i'll be able to do 60 heading down, but i'll be empty then
05:03 PM roycroft: the suspension has been lifted a couple inches on the pickup, too
05:03 PM roycroft: so that will help
05:04 PM roycroft: it will ride more like a normal pickup on the way home, not a lifted pickup
05:04 PM roycroft: those aviation connectors on amazon don't say if the amperage rating is dc or not
05:04 PM xxcoder: probably almost squatback with load lol
05:04 PM roycroft: but i use that kind on my machine
05:05 PM xxcoder: roy it does list volts and amps, for ac, and some for dc
05:05 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/MiniRouter/FinishedCabinetBack.jpeg
05:05 PM roycroft: but amperage is not listed as ac or dc or both
05:05 PM JT-Mobile: nice
05:05 PM roycroft: oh, man
05:06 PM roycroft: i keep going to my controller cabinet with a flashlight and magnifying glass to try to read the dip switch settings on the drivers
05:06 PM roycroft: and i have this: https://roycroft.us/MiniRouter/Driver.jpeg
05:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol -
05:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/6MqmkQsmGSvkH4Uw8
05:08 PM roycroft: or i could have visited skunkworks8841's wite
05:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I bought a couple to get a sherline style lathe running..
05:08 PM roycroft: ok, i'm off to get gravel
05:09 PM roycroft: if i don't come back you'll know it was a fail
05:09 PM xxcoder: hopefully gravel is all roughness you get
05:09 PM Unterhausen: there's a penn state home game tomorrow, I'm surprised I didn't see more RV's
05:09 PM Unterhausen: maybe they all went to drive past Roycroft's house
05:10 PM roycroft: btw, i used to haul a full yard of gravel on my old toyota 1/2 ton pickup
05:10 PM roycroft: that thing would be almost scraping the ground after it was loaded
05:11 PM roycroft: but i only had to drive about 3 miles
05:11 PM roycroft: anyway, time to be off
05:11 PM roycroft: it's officially the holiday weekend!
05:17 PM JT-Mobile: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5604773be4b07571cdc25ad8/1443165376081-0GTD1A5921J6BC93Q12N/KreisWorldFamousPrimeRib_2048x1365.jpg?format=1500w
05:17 PM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> I have similar driver
05:30 PM * JT-Mobile brought home some chat (crushed limestone) once on the 16' trailer and one scoop from the loader really put a load on it
07:48 PM roycroft: well that did not go to plan at all
07:48 PM roycroft: when i was checking fluids before taking off for town i found that the transmission fluid was a bit low
07:48 PM roycroft: i only found one store locally that had any transmission fluid, and it was the wrong kind
07:49 PM roycroft: i ended up driving almost all the way to town to find a parts store that had what i needed
07:49 PM Tom_L: leaking?
07:49 PM roycroft: the pickup probably would have made the trip, including hauling the gravel back, just fine - it has a 16 quart transmission fluid capacity, and being down one quart probably would not matter, but i did not want to take a chance
07:50 PM roycroft: no sign of leaks
07:50 PM roycroft: i haven't added any fluid since i bought the truck about 5 years ago
07:50 PM Tom_L: what made you decide to check it?
07:50 PM roycroft: i always check fluids before i go to town
07:50 PM roycroft: in the pickup
07:50 PM Tom_L: ahh
07:51 PM roycroft: in my car i check a couple times/month
07:51 PM roycroft: anyway, it's topped off now
07:51 PM Tom_L: no rocks
07:51 PM roycroft: but it's too late to get gravel - the quarry closed 10 minutes ago
07:51 PM roycroft: so i'm back to my original plan of going tomorrow morning
07:52 PM Tom_L: are they open on the holiday weekend?
07:52 PM roycroft: still, i think it was the right choice to not drive it that way
07:52 PM roycroft: yes
07:52 PM Tom_L: what time?
07:52 PM roycroft: and i confirmed on the phone
07:52 PM roycroft: they're open 7-5 tomorrow
07:52 PM Tom_L: i'd go as early as possible :)
07:52 PM roycroft: i shall
07:52 PM roycroft: but the game starts at 1, i think
07:52 PM roycroft: so there will be traffic even that early
07:52 PM roycroft: folks show up early for tailgate parties
07:53 PM Tom_L: maybe at 1 everybody will be there
07:53 PM roycroft: that's actually the best time to drive on a game day
07:53 PM Tom_L: i would imagine so
07:54 PM roycroft: when i lived in eugene, often times the only way i would know there's a home game would be when i went to the store and there was zero traffic
07:54 PM roycroft: most of the rest of the time it would be when i would go downtown and there was really heavy traffic
07:55 PM roycroft: i'm not sure college football is as big a thing in kansas as it is in nebraska and in the south, but in oregon it's almost as big a thing as those places
07:55 PM roycroft: i5 will be jammed up tomorrow from portland to eugene
07:56 PM roycroft: and the cops will be making more dui arrests tomorrow than they usually do in a month
07:56 PM roycroft: especially after the game
08:00 PM Tom_L: we lost our football team here years ago
08:00 PM xxcoder: I guess its highly profitable for goverment on dui season
08:01 PM roycroft: a lot of people get killed by drunk drivers
08:01 PM roycroft: i think and hope that's the reason the police are out in force on game days
08:01 PM xxcoder: I know. thats why its always better to catch and arrest drunk drivers.
08:02 PM Tom_L: the basketball team is alot bigger thing here
08:02 PM xxcoder: theres always people dumb enough to think "eh im just a little tipsy I can drive home" and kill someone
08:04 PM Tom_L: a tragic 1970 plane crash killed 31 members of the team and staff
08:05 PM Tom_L: they weren't doing that good anyway
08:06 PM JT-Mobile: it won't be long for me before I call it a night
08:06 PM JT-Mobile: FD&H
08:06 PM Tom_L: belly full of meat may contribute to that
08:06 PM xxcoder: food coma
08:06 PM JT-Mobile: or maybe FT&S
08:07 PM JT-Mobile: Full Tired and Sleepy
08:08 PM roycroft: there's a lot of people who just don't care about anyone but themselves
08:08 PM roycroft: and sometimes not even themselves
08:08 PM JT-Mobile: we met a really nice black couple with a C5 and had some good conversation with them
08:08 PM roycroft: a lot of folks in eugene hate the sports program at the university of oregon
08:08 PM roycroft: but it's self-sustaining
08:09 PM roycroft: i.e. it sucks no money from the academic side
08:09 PM roycroft: in my view, if some folks like sports then that's great
08:09 PM roycroft: and a lot of students get scholarships through the athletic program
08:10 PM roycroft: i knew a young woman when i lived in eugene who went to the university of alaska on a full athletic scholarship
08:10 PM roycroft: she played volleyball
08:10 PM roycroft: she graduated, and went on and got her masters on another athletic scholarship
08:11 PM roycroft: she now has a master's degree in environmental science, and has zero college debt
08:11 PM roycroft: i'd say that's a good thing about sports programs
08:12 PM roycroft: i should start dinner and do some cad work
08:12 PM roycroft: or maybe work on the minirouter for a bit while the pizza dough is rising
08:14 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:30 PM xxcoder: ugh too hard work for me. barely sitting up
09:33 PM xxcoder: emptied out black and gray tanks. FUN
09:33 PM xxcoder: planned to do water refull but ran out of energy
09:41 PM Tom_L: on a metric config is the F word expressed in mm/m or M/m?
09:41 PM xxcoder: whatever the worse one is, it is that one
09:44 PM xxcoder: lol hmm feed? mm/m I am pretty sure
09:45 PM xxcoder: could be wrong, been quite a while since I ran mini router
09:45 PM Tom_L: it is
09:45 PM xxcoder: my brain is too burnt out
09:45 PM roycroft: if it's any country in the world except the us, it would be mm/m
09:46 PM roycroft: in the usa, people don't understand metric units well and use random ones
09:46 PM Tom_L: machine units per min and that is set in the [TRAJ] ini section
09:47 PM Tom_L: LINEAR_UNITS
09:47 PM Tom_L: Possible choices are mm or inch
09:48 PM Tom_L: i was thinking about converting all my subs to have a metric set now that they are all tested
09:48 PM Tom_L: i have a metric set but they're not up to date or tested well
09:49 PM Tom_L: wondering if it's worth the effort
09:56 PM Tom_L: hmm, typo in the docs
09:57 PM Tom_L: in the [TRAJ] section NO_FORCE_HOMING
09:58 PM Tom_L: one of them should be 0
10:07 PM lfluffywof: grrrrrrrrrr. went to install my replacement y-axis leadscrew... and it's the wrong part.
10:07 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
10:07 PM Tom_L: wrong how?
10:08 PM fluffywolf: too short on the stepper motor end, wrong diameter, keying, and threading on the handwheel end.
10:09 PM fluffywolf: the stepper motor end is I think usable/easily fixable, but without a Y axis leadscrew, I don't have any way to machine my Y axis leadscrew. lol.
10:10 PM fluffywolf: I could probably use my old one to machine the new one.
10:10 PM fluffywolf: or, back to plan A, fix my old one.
10:10 PM Tom_L: it was bent right?
10:10 PM fluffywolf: yes
10:11 PM fluffywolf: .023 runout at the stepper end, and it looks like a S bend, not a simple press-in-one-place fix.
10:11 PM fluffywolf: I couldn't find an obvious high point spinning it while moving a dial indicator along it.
10:11 PM fluffywolf: multiple high and low spots
10:12 PM fluffywolf: https://imgur.com/a/vQfdyvJ
10:17 PM Tom_L: use a precision hammer
10:20 PM fluffywolf: it's pretty thick. it'll need a press and something to protect the threads.
10:20 PM fluffywolf: my hammers that can bend that thick don't do precision well. :)
10:21 PM fluffywolf: and it's too long to put between centers in the machine for a better attempt at mapping the bend.
10:21 PM fluffywolf: my guess is it was originally a severe simple bend, and the previous owner straightened it, stopping at this smaller, more complex bend.
10:22 PM fluffywolf: he told me he'd fixed several things after the "incident".
10:22 PM fluffywolf: (he backed his forklift into it)
10:23 PM xxcoder: maybe can fix one bend a time, if you have press
10:23 PM Tom_L: press with some softer brass between
10:23 PM fluffywolf: alas, I do not have a press.
10:24 PM xxcoder: do you have that small car lift thingy?
10:24 PM fluffywolf: I don't know what a small car lift thingy is.
10:24 PM xxcoder: lemme try find a pic
10:24 PM fluffywolf: I do have plenty of random jacks, but trying to use them without a frame will be annoying.
10:25 PM xxcoder: https://www.vehiclescene.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/types-of-car-jacks-750x417.jpg rightmost one
10:25 PM xxcoder: and yeah not sure also on frame
10:25 PM fluffywolf: that's called a bottle jack.
10:26 PM xxcoder: thanks
10:26 PM fluffywolf: in order, that's a hydraulic floor jack (or just floor jack), scissor jack, and hydraulic bottle jack.
10:28 PM xxcoder: hopefully I can remember lol. my brain is getting better but still quite burnt out
10:32 PM fluffywolf: probably I should jury rig some centers and do a better job mapping the bends as the first step.
10:32 PM xxcoder: any surface?
10:32 PM * fluffywolf sets the tailstock on a cinder block next to the machine
10:32 PM fluffywolf: lol
10:33 PM xxcoder: guess not. one large enough for that ballscrew may be too hard to get
10:34 PM fluffywolf: I'm not sure what you're asking.
10:34 PM xxcoder: theres few names for it. surface is most common, but some call it rock
10:34 PM xxcoder: super flat griate block
10:34 PM fluffywolf: the usual way you map bends, from what I understand, is to put the part between centers, and then measure peak height and angle at various points along it.
10:34 PM fluffywolf: "surface plate"
10:35 PM xxcoder: shops I worked at always just called it surface
10:35 PM fluffywolf: I do have one, but it'd be a lot easier to measure the part between centers vs trying to keep it in one place rolling around on my surface plate.
10:35 PM xxcoder: true
10:36 PM fluffywolf: if I wanted to measure it on a flat surface, meausing it sitting in the T-slots like in the video would be easier than the surface plate. lol
10:36 PM fluffywolf: but I tried measuring it in the T-slots, and got non-helpful data.
10:37 PM xxcoder: hopefully between centers would work better
10:39 PM fluffywolf: all the pictures I can find online look like the leadscrew I have... I think they mis-identified the one they had sitting around and sent me.
10:40 PM xxcoder: or bad returnee
10:40 PM fluffywolf: it's an old machine they no longer stock any parts for; they said they had this leadscrew because someone had converted to ballscrews and gave them the parts.
10:40 PM xxcoder: interesting
10:41 PM fluffywolf: probably from a slightly different machine
10:47 PM fluffywolf: my machine is in too bad of shape (it has a lot more bashed up than just the leadscrew) to throw that kind of effort at it.
10:47 PM fluffywolf: (ballscrew conversion)
11:16 PM fluffywolf: lol, I went to imgur's front page... seems they imploded in some fashion since last time I did that.
11:17 PM xxcoder: indeed
11:20 PM fluffywolf: duh, I'm stupid... a video on youtube suggests measuring between vee blocks if you can't fit it between centers.
11:53 PM xxcoder: hopefully that works
11:59 PM lfluffywof: seems like imgur got sold once again, the new owners are enshittifying it maximally, so everyone is posting trash or leaving. sigh. imgur was one of my favorite sites.
