08:34 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> rdtsc-w: So just sluggish
08:49 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I like home assistant so far, see if I feel the same when I go to set up wireguard access
09:40 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://electronicsam.com/images/steam/DSC_3845.JPG
09:41 AM JT-Shop: keyboard jog for flex is coming soon...
09:42 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> cool!
09:42 AM Tom_L: genius at work.... again
09:42 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> wasapp
09:42 AM Tom_L: blue sky
09:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> That steam engine was made by my great great great uncle ira. (I don't know if that is even right)
09:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/UvQfBLpN7qTNzyoK9
09:44 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/rue/Steam_engine/Steam_engine4.jpg
09:44 AM Tom_L: that one was made by my grandfather :)
09:44 AM * JT-Shop heads to empire for a bit
09:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> neat.. my great great uncle joe always taked about his uncle ira.. Joe was always upset that ira burned the paterns for the steam engine
09:45 AM Tom_L: heh
09:45 AM Rab: skunkworks8841, so he cast all those parts?
09:45 AM luffywolff: is that a cga540 fitting missing the nut? heh
09:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes
09:46 AM luffywolff: it'll run real good off 2500psi. :P
09:46 AM Rab: Was this a production item, or a one-off?
09:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that might help for scale..
09:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://electronicsam.com/images/steam/DSC_3844.JPG
09:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it isn't small
09:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think uncle joe always thought it was around 5-10 hp
09:48 AM Tom_L: pretty hefty
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> luffywolff: I think it was just put there to get air into the engine.. lol
09:53 AM luffywolff: googling suggests it's a Bischoff or Sipp casting kit, probably... I don't know my live steam kits. lol
09:58 AM luffywolff: one of the many hobbies I don't have time or money for.
09:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> he made the patterns and had them casted..
10:00 AM rdtsc-w: lucid.nonsense: try a different browser - if still the same, then it's likely just slow
10:03 AM Tom_L: not slow here
10:03 AM luffywolff: that's even more impressive, then. usually you buy a kit that has all the cast iron parts, as bare castings, then do all the machine work and other parts yourself.
10:05 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I assume it was made in the early part of the 20th century..
10:10 AM JT-Mobile: I have a kit I've never finished
10:11 AM luffywolff: bbl, time for work
11:47 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> rdtsc-w: Yeah, might be duckduckgo browser, or just 5g acting up
11:49 AM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Actually, website is fine, but forum dead slow, on ddgo and Firefox
11:50 AM Tom_L: it has it's moments
11:51 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Those steam engines were popular in the 60's- 70's
11:52 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Back in the days of hobby shops
12:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> huh - I should check this out...
12:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://researchworks.oclc.org/archivegrid/collection/data/45796094
12:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> He died in 1975
01:19 PM Rab: skunkworks8841, very cool find. I guess you could go there and listen to the tape on premises. I wonder if they have a provision for digitizing a personal copy.
01:20 PM Rab: If that were my family history, I'd slip a contact mic into the headset if I had to.
01:21 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - I can't log into the acuall library in lacrosse. (I gave up)
01:27 PM roycroft: road trip!
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it isn't that far away.. Expecially from work.. Maybe 20 minutes
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> at the most
01:27 PM roycroft: just be sure to practice your minnesota accent before you go
01:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you becha
01:28 PM roycroft: you'll be really close to oof-da territory
01:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am in oof-da territory.. My mom is Norwegian...
01:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> she was an evenson.
01:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and related to the ericsons..
01:39 PM pcw-home: I'm part Norwegian (grandfathers name was Leif Ingrbrigtsen)
01:41 PM pcw-home: Sadly, never met him (was killed in a sawmill accident at 21)
01:50 PM pcw-home: (not many safety standards in the 1920's)
02:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> my grandfather told the story of a guy at autolite managed to cut a finger off on the band saw.. The supervisor walked over and said - how the hell did you do that? So he cut another finger off to show him..
02:53 PM lcnc-relay: <die_limonade@> and in the end he had probably more fingers left than he had common sense😛
03:09 PM JT-Shop: I've heard some stories at the shipyard but didn't believe any of them
03:26 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:30 PM * JT-Shop watches Calvin adjusting derailleur
03:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Grandpa told the story more than once and he wasn't one to embellish.. but who knows
03:41 PM JT-Shop: all right rear shift cable and housing has been replaced and it shifts much better now
03:46 PM JT-Shop: and the chain is clean and lubed up ready to ride
03:59 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> I'm Norwegian, can confirm my grandfather and great grandfather, both mariners in their younger days, were full of tall tales
04:00 PM xxcoder: while I am no war hawk, I wish my grandfather in least outlined what he did in ww2
04:00 PM xxcoder: he would only say that he went to germany and japan
04:01 PM xxcoder: which by itself is bit of mystery, as solders rarely went to both, and he was drafted too.
04:01 PM Rab: Was he a soldier? He might have performed some logistical role.
04:02 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> Probably records available somewhere
04:02 PM xxcoder: literally only thing we have of him, in his soldier life, is his picture in uniform./
04:02 PM xxcoder: how would I find those records?
04:04 PM Rab: My grandfather was a career Marine in various support roles in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. He said he never participated in combat, but he got bombed a lot.
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> A search for whatever agency is responsible for service records, then request them at a guess. Should be public domain after a certain age.
04:05 PM xxcoder: ok thanks
04:06 PM lcnc-relay: <lucid.nonsense@> This is my guess, I'm a Norwegian living in the UK, and pretty sure this type of documentation is readily accessible in both, might be a charge for the service
04:07 PM JT-Shop: https://www.archives.gov/research/military/ww2
04:08 PM xxcoder: wow draft records is pretty specific
04:08 PM xxcoder: thanks, will look into it more later
04:09 PM Rab: He visited us once at our house right under the final approach for the airport. A passenger jet came in and he hit the deck. It was funny at the time, less so as I've thought about it.
04:15 PM JT-Shop: a few years back after MIL passed we went PR to spread her ashes and I asked wife's uncle if he hunted just trying to make conversation
04:15 PM JT-Shop: he did 2 tours in viet nam
04:16 PM JT-Shop: his reply was after hunting men animals were not a challenge
04:16 PM JT-Shop: I had no clue what to say next
04:16 PM xxcoder: the most dangerous animal eh
04:16 PM JT-Shop: so I think he was a sniper
04:17 PM xxcoder: yeah maybe
04:17 PM JT-Shop: but he never said
04:22 PM JT-Shop: my Dad was a tail gunner on a Hellcat on the Enterprise
04:23 PM JT-Shop: the ships captain made him carry the camera for the dive bomber group because he took good photos
04:23 PM JT-Shop: usually it was given to different tail gunners each mission
04:28 PM JT-Shop: my Dad's last entry in his log was YIPPEE
04:29 PM Tom_L: heh
04:29 PM JT-Shop: my sister has his log book from training through Japan's surrender
04:31 PM xxcoder: interesting
04:43 PM JT-Shop: my Dad was a dirt poor child in NC and never had shoes in the summer, after ww2 he saw an ad for air traffic controllers and called them
04:44 PM JT-Shop: they said you can type right? he said yes how many works per minute?
04:45 PM JT-Shop: so he got on a train with a typewriter and some paper and taught himself how to type by the time he got to Oklahoma
04:47 PM JT-Shop: I think he said it was Tulsa was where the hiring was being done
04:57 PM t4nk_freenode is now known as t4nk_fn
04:58 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i'm kinda surprised how quick this kbd stuff came together
04:59 PM JT-Shop: me too
04:59 PM JT-Shop: but once I get a grasp of something sorting out the details usually doesn't take long
05:02 PM JT-Shop: I did struggle with it for a while early on
05:02 PM Tom_L: i remember
05:04 PM JT-Shop: the biggest hurdle was sorting out what works and what doesn't... never could follow qtvcp code it's just too cornfusing
05:06 PM JT-Shop: it was interesting the Kurt worked on qtvcp for a while then started pyqtvcp but it was only a marginal improvement in making a gui without programming
05:06 PM JT-Shop: so my goal was to make a gui with no programming
05:07 PM Tom_L: so far that's been done with flying colors
05:07 PM JT-Shop: well it did take a couple of attempts at the start
05:08 PM Tom_L: takeoff from jet
05:08 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:08 PM Tom_L: did you make any sense out of that file i posted?
05:09 PM JT-Shop: which file?
05:09 PM Tom_L: the keyintercept txt file
05:09 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/keyintercept.txt
05:10 PM JT-Shop: yes
05:10 PM Tom_L: looked like there were a couple ways to go about it
05:13 PM Tom_L: i haven't really had a chance to look over the jog py much yet
05:27 PM JT-Shop: saw a boat today with 5 500hp outboards on it
05:27 PM JT-Shop: that's a lot of power
05:28 PM JT-Shop: say goodnight gracie
07:43 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> milling 1 valve seat from cylinder, takes 40mins
07:43 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> lol
08:52 PM firephoto__ is now known as firephoto_
09:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oof.. Our company bought a smaller company.. I went there to look at a couple computers that they would like to upgrade.. They are running windows 7 - all i3's and running software that I don't know if will run on windows 11...
09:04 PM xxcoder: win 7 may be peak windows, but its also quite old
09:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> plus they are running a domain server. I haven't dealt with microsoft servers since 2000...
09:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> *windows 2000
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> eh - 10 had a pretty rocky start - but 10 and 11 have been pretty painless... Plus for the most part you can through an install into another computer and it will probably work. like linux.
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I just try to forget the spyware.
09:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 7 was not portable. for the most part
09:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> throw
10:55 PM roycroft: i've found windows 10 to be the most tolerable version in a very long time
10:55 PM roycroft: perhaps ever
10:55 PM roycroft: i have nothing that will run windows 11, so i have no idea about that
10:56 PM roycroft: but windows 10 mostly just works
10:59 PM fluffywolf: I was forced to use windows two weeks ago. windows 10. it was fucking showing me "apps" I could purchase in the start menu. an excellent reminder windows should die.
11:10 PM roycroft: i use it almost daily
11:10 PM roycroft: but i don't really notice that it's windows much, except the scroll button on the mouse works the opposite of the way it should, and i don't think i'll ever get used to that
11:11 PM roycroft: i only run cad apps on it though
11:11 PM fluffywolf: freecad's keyboard scrolling being backwards from every single other program ever written is exceptionally annoying, on that topic.
11:11 PM roycroft: no email, no web surfing, nothing but cad
11:11 PM xxcoder: thats weird n scroll wheel. is it compared to apple ios though?
11:12 PM roycroft: and occasionally excel, when i need it for a cad drawing
11:13 PM roycroft: on mac os when you move the scroll wheel the screen moves in the same direction
11:13 PM roycroft: on windows if you scroll up the screen moves down
11:13 PM roycroft: it's quite disconcerting
11:13 PM xxcoder: interesting. linux is same as windows, so I never had any transition issue
11:14 PM roycroft: i rarely use a gui with linux
11:14 PM roycroft: and when i do, the mouse rarely has a scroll wheel
11:14 PM roycroft: i don't know if i've ever scrolled with linux
11:15 PM roycroft: but if linux does it that way it can probably be fixed pretty easily
11:15 PM roycroft: windows, i'm not so sure
11:17 PM roycroft: so i found out today that i'll be employed for another month
11:17 PM roycroft: that's both good and bad
11:17 PM roycroft: i need the money
11:17 PM roycroft: but i need time to rebuild my roof, so i think i'll take some vacation time
11:20 PM fluffywolf: I work 8-12 hours a day and can't pay the bills. a vacation isn't even a remote possibility.
11:20 PM fluffywolf: and soon I'll be working 13-14 hour days, for even less money.
11:22 PM xxcoder: 0 hour a week for me. essentally forced into retirement by health issues. fun!
11:22 PM roycroft: my vacation is paid
11:23 PM fluffywolf: so you have one of those rich people jobs. must be nice. heh.
11:23 PM roycroft: far from rich
11:23 PM roycroft: and if getting paid vacation is a sign of being rich person, we have bigger problems in this country than even i thought
11:28 PM fluffywolf: I don't even make minimum wage... but california has zero enforcement of labor laws, and it's better than most jobs around here.
11:30 PM fluffywolf: california politicians talk big, but refuse to actually fund the labor commission, which is the only way to get labor laws enforced, so it's a useless pretty-much-only-exists-on-paper entity that doesn't actually help workers.
11:31 PM fluffywolf: if you steal a stapler from work, you go to jail. if your employer shorts you on every paycheck, ignores mandatory breaks, etc, that's an administrative penalty that won't actually ever be enforced anyway.
11:32 PM fluffywolf: I routinely see jobs posting offering half minimum wage.
11:33 PM fluffywolf: the labor commissioner's office has a case backlog more than three years long, and even if they do decide to pay attention to your claim, by the time they get around to it, you probably won't be working at the same place and they wouldn't be able to do anything even if they wanted to.
11:36 PM fluffywolf: and this isn't just my ranting. every single time the government looks into it, this is exactly what they find. example: https://www.auditor.ca.gov/reports/2023-104/
11:36 PM fluffywolf: sacramento is staffed with "democrats" who are just as much corporate shills as republicans, and do not protect workers in the slightest.
11:37 PM fluffywolf: "Although state law requires the LCO to issue a decision on a wage claim within a maximum of 135 days after it is filed, as of the end of fiscal year 2022–23, the agency had taken a median of 854 days to issue decisions"
11:39 PM fluffywolf: and if three years later you're still working for the same crooks, and they actually look at your claim, and they decide it in your favor... you still don't get paid. because there is no actual enforcement mechanism. failing to pay workers isn't actually a crime. the cops do not get involved. the employers does not go to jail. they just file the judgement in the trash and go on.
11:39 PM * fluffywolf stops ranting
11:54 PM roycroft: we elected a president who prides himself on not paying people for the work that they perform, so what do you expect?
11:57 PM fluffywolf: this problem is local to california, and far predates the current president.
11:58 PM fluffywolf: the democratic party isn't much less corrupt than the republican party.
11:58 PM roycroft: yes, i know it predates the current regime
11:58 PM roycroft: but that same problem is manifested in several states
11:58 PM fluffywolf: california has had democratic leadership for a very long time, and every successive iteration of it continues to knowingly and intentionally fuck workers.
11:59 PM roycroft: there are reasons i did not move to california :)
11:59 PM fluffywolf: according to the government's own report, cases take an average of 890 days, and only 12% of judgements actually get paid. there is basically no enforcement of labor laws. the government knows this, and readily publishes this... but does nothing about it.
