10:15 AM NetPipe: coffee anyone
10:58 AM roycroft: it rained a fair amount overnight, thank goodness
11:30 AM fluffywolf: it just started raining here... about three seconds after I put my shoes on to go outside and do yard work.
11:31 AM roycroft: i have a small job to do today for my new client which is outdoors, but it should only take a few minutes
11:31 AM roycroft: and i have to go to town today
11:31 AM roycroft: i'm going to take a piece of my new flooring with me to see if it matches up with any current product, so i'll know what my options are
11:32 AM roycroft: my new portable garage delivery date has been pushed out to the 28th, and i need that installed before i can start work on my roof
11:32 AM roycroft: so it looks like the roofing job will be getting into the rainy season
11:33 AM fluffywolf: I have no garage of any kind, alas...
11:33 AM roycroft: which means i'll probably have to use the big, expensive tarp i'm going to buy
11:33 AM roycroft: i was hoping that i could get the job done and not need the tarp so i could return it
11:33 AM roycroft: but i'm not going to tear off a single shingle until i have the tarp in my posession
11:35 AM roycroft: it's actually not that expesnive - i can get a 12 mil tarp that will cover the whole thing for $90
11:35 AM roycroft: i think
11:35 AM roycroft: maybe $140
11:36 AM roycroft: i'm pretty sure the $90 one would work
11:37 AM fluffywolf: I have a slight roof leak in one corner, but I need to remove my hot water panels to get to where I think it is.
11:40 AM fluffywolf: well crap. the rain is getting harder. it wasn't supposed to rain any time soon. I have a stack of tooling in the back of my van, and my van, like every other ford van of similar era, is leaky, meaning it's all going to get damp and rust.
11:40 AM roycroft: i'm still not sure how i'm going to do some of the framing work if i can't find a helper
11:40 AM fluffywolf: forecast shows the rain only lasting a couple hours... I might go crank the heater up full and idle the van the whole time.
11:41 AM roycroft: my experience trying to hire people up here is that they're not good at showing up to do the work, but they're very good at showing up the next day demanding payment for the work they did not do
11:41 AM roycroft: it's really warm here
11:41 AM roycroft: it is quite unusual for us to get warm rain
11:41 AM roycroft: even the rare summer rains we get are usually accompanied by a significant temperature drop
11:42 AM roycroft: but it's 22 degrees, and the rain only stopped a couple hours ago
11:43 AM fluffywolf: I got a double stack toolbox of tooling at an estate sale a couple months ago, and it hasn't yet moved from the back of my van to somewhere better to store it.
11:44 AM roycroft: erin is at category 5 now
11:44 AM roycroft: it's a good thing it's turning north
11:45 AM fluffywolf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khRzQz0PnZ0&list=PL2ISTNaXIkzC2s9OMVn2EnkT_c3g7JU9-&index=8 I haven't seen this guy on youtube before. Seems to have a nice mill setup.
11:46 AM Scopeuk: I think the mill is it's own video build series
11:48 AM roycroft: i've seen that guy's videos
11:49 AM Scopeuk: I quite like his sense of humour, the recuring "that's definitely not a microphone is subtle enough that it's not irritating
11:49 AM roycroft: "not an engineer" is a good name for his channel
11:49 AM roycroft: he's clever, and he gets things figured out, but it's obvious that he's not trained to do that kind of stuff
11:50 AM fluffywolf: I'd be too tempted to grab my Hitachi for the microphone...
11:50 AM roycroft: and i'm not impressed with the fake microphone stuff
11:50 AM Scopeuk: it's not impressive but it's also not a massive distraction
11:51 AM roycroft: that's something martina from nerdforge started years ago - she used a hand shovel for planting stuff as a fake microphone
11:51 AM roycroft: then everyone, it seems, started using fake microphones
11:51 AM Scopeuk: that's fair, I'm aware of the trend, I wasn't aware of the root cause
11:51 AM roycroft: martina uses random stuff now, and doesn't use a fake mike all that much at all
11:52 AM roycroft: it's no longer clever - it's become pedestrian
11:52 AM roycroft: she may not be the first, but she's the first person i saw doing it, and she was doing it for quite a while before i saw anyone else doing it
11:55 AM * roycroft wants to get on with his day, but needs his ipad for the job, and it's still charging
12:29 PM fluffywolf: I'm beginning to really dislike the music selections of people on this secret santa list.
12:36 PM xxcoder: wow it got worse. https://www.theregister.com/2025/08/13/firefox_ai_scoffing_power/
12:36 PM xxcoder: glad I use waterfox
12:42 PM Tom_L: pretty soon you won't have to think at all
12:43 PM lfluffywof: I'm hoping Ladybird doesn't suck.
12:43 PM xxcoder: theres always been people addicted to ez-think
12:50 PM roycroft: i haven't "upgraded" firefox in a while
12:50 PM roycroft: just think of how slow it would be on my imac if i had, given how slow the older version was
12:50 PM roycroft: so far, waterfox is doing fine for me
12:51 PM xxcoder: indeed
12:52 PM lfluffywof: argh... another video in the playlist, another selection of fucking painfully bad music.
12:54 PM lfluffywof: I have high hopes for ladybird, but it's so early in development that there's no way to know how it'll turn out.
12:54 PM lfluffywof: I had high hopes for dillo too, but they decided to stop adding features well before it could render more than 1% of web pages...
12:57 PM xxcoder: ew lol. in discord people discussing about dying watches that was sla printed, and one guy menioned he uses dyes only for river table. ew.
01:00 PM * lfluffywof tries to parse that
01:00 PM xxcoder: *dyeing
01:00 PM xxcoder: they was making custom cases for pebble watches
01:09 PM lfluffywof: I still don't get it. lol.
01:12 PM lfluffywof: what's a pebble watch, is dyeing a SLA print a weird thing (seems cheaper than buying every color resin you might need? are they coloring the raw resin, or soaking the finished print?), river tables are those big epoxy pour wood tables, no? what's eww about any of this?
01:13 PM xxcoder: by pebble watch I mean literally pebble watch. watches made by pebble
01:13 PM xxcoder: dyeing sla print is not whats weird
01:14 PM xxcoder: and river tables really suck, even very well made, because its huge overblown fad
01:17 PM lfluffywof: ok, so the ewws were about the existence of river tables. lol
01:18 PM xxcoder: yeah. I only liked one so far. and it uses actual water
01:19 PM lfluffywof: brb
01:22 PM olfluffywf: stupid hotspot.
01:36 PM rdtsc: browsers seem to follow a bell-curve of bloat and users. The more users, the more bloat = its demise
01:37 PM rdtsc: rode the opera 'coaster for awhile, now it seems that that one too is getting slow and bloated
01:38 PM rdtsc: ...even though it was touted when it first came on the scene as being so lightweight and fast
01:41 PM xxcoder: maybe, for now, waterfox seem to be nice and trim, and vivaldi runs ok
01:44 PM rdtsc: it certainly is a changing landscape, where one can't be tied to a single browser for longer than a decade or so
01:44 PM xxcoder: I used firefox for over a decade
01:44 PM rdtsc: firefox is likely one of the best
01:44 PM xxcoder: yep, long run before enshittification got in a major way
01:45 PM rdtsc: guess I'm just a little disappointed opera came on the scene so fast and lightweight, then slowly turned into yet another sumo wrestler among browsers (no offense to any sumo wrestlers out there)
01:46 PM olfluffywf: I've been using firefox for a very, very long time... and it still leaks memory as bad as 3.x did...
01:48 PM rdtsc: caught opera doing that on two occasions, but the devs eventually patched it
02:59 PM roycroft: firefox does a good job of garbage collection, but a horrible job at garbage disposal
03:00 PM roycroft: it is a garbage hoarder
05:49 PM pcw-home: Well, could have saved some time by checking if the new freezer gasket we bought was actually the right one before taking off the freezer door...
05:50 PM pcw-home: Right part number but wrong part on the box... sigh
05:50 PM pcw-home: in the box
05:50 PM xxcoder: ugh
05:50 PM xxcoder: hope its not a returnee
05:53 PM pcw-home: They are sending what I hope is the right one, not cheap either, like $150.00 for a gasket
05:53 PM JT-Shop: wow, I didn't even know you could get replacement gaskets for freezers
05:55 PM pcw-home: Just the freezer door on a refrigerator
05:56 PM rdtsc: watch Wes work just released an auto repair video where three parts were wrong straight from the dealer
05:57 PM rdtsc: point being, looks like parts supply is a weakening field
05:58 PM rdtsc: since 2020, car parts have gone up about 45% while quality has gone down
05:58 PM pcw-home: This is from the OEM, It was supposed to be a ~31" x 22" gasket and the one they send was ~39" x 16"
06:02 PM JT-Shop: LG couldn't get anyone to repair our fridge so they bought it back after 4 years
06:03 PM pcw-home: I'm just hoping this one holds out for a while longer
06:04 PM JT-Shop: they did pro rate it a bit but not much
06:04 PM JT-Shop: the Kenmore 22 we have downstairs is 38 years old
06:05 PM pcw-home: Ours is a kenmore but only about 20 years old
06:05 PM pcw-home: probably not as well made
06:06 PM JT-Shop: I surprised you can get parts for a fridge that old
06:08 PM pcw-home: I think it was a common model as it's the same as Whirlpool and some others
06:09 PM pcw-home: I think we replaced one of the trays a couple years ago
06:11 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzGIIqVZtIM
06:11 PM JT-Shop: nettle sag aloo
06:12 PM JT-Shop: I didn't know you can eat nettles
06:18 PM pcw-home: Yeah as long as they are cooked
06:29 PM pcw-home: We have a common supposedly toxic weed here that has been used as a green around the world for years (likely also with special cooking) : Solanum Nigrum
06:29 PM JT-Shop: we have a lot of stinging nettles
06:29 PM JT-Shop: out by the rivers
06:30 PM pcw-home: I really like the Solanum Nigrum berries (like really sweet tomatoes with a bit of licorice)
06:31 PM pcw-home: I've been stung a bit with nettles when young, but there are none around here
06:32 PM pcw-home: probably too dry
06:43 PM pcw-home: Anyone know which Python versions are acceptable to LinuxCNC 2.9 and master?
06:44 PM JT-Shop: does that depend on what OS you have?
06:44 PM pcw-home: I need to update my ancient mint installation as master needs 3.9 or > now but not sure how high I can go
06:45 PM Tom_L: i thought they migrated to a newer one a while back but i don't know what version
06:45 PM pcw-home: The master requirement for 3.9 or > is recent
06:45 PM pcw-home: So I can no longer compile master
06:45 PM pcw-home: (on Mint 20.2)
06:46 PM JT-Shop: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/debian/control.main-pkg.in#L12
06:46 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/45793-install-2-9-on-debian-11
06:46 PM Tom_L: dunno if that helps or not
06:46 PM Tom_L: 3.9.2
06:47 PM JT-Shop: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/debian/control.top.in#L43
06:47 PM JT-Shop: I'm just seeing python3 but no versions
06:48 PM pcw-home: I was able to limp along for a while by upgrading Python to 3.8 but 3.9 breaks a bunch of stuff on Mint 20.2
06:49 PM JT-Shop: john@machineshop:~/emc/debian$ grep -irn Build-Depends
06:49 PM JT-Shop: control:6:Build-Depends:
06:49 PM JT-Shop: control:45:Build-Depends-Indep:
06:49 PM JT-Shop: control.top.in:9:Build-Depends:
06:49 PM JT-Shop: control.top.in:54:Build-Depends-Indep:
06:49 PM JT-Shop: changelog:809: * Fixing build-depends - also binary packages need asciidoc to build
06:51 PM JT-Shop: jeeze they have a convoluted control in debian
06:51 PM pcw-home: my plan was to save my home directory, install Mint 22.1 and the restore my home directory but Mint 22.1 uses python 3.12 and not sure if thats OK especially for 2.9
06:52 PM JT-Shop: debian 12 has python3.11.2
06:53 PM Tom_L: most of the forum answers are old
06:54 PM Tom_L: mint17 old
06:55 PM JT-Shop: interesting that the only GUI that works on Gentoo now is Flex GUI
06:55 PM Tom_L: https://www.forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/54021-python3-12
06:55 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/55660-linux-mint-22-1-linuxcnc-2-10-iso
06:57 PM pcw-home: On the bright side, current Trixie uses Python 3.13 so if LinuxCNC's 2.9/master source is updated I should be OK
06:58 PM pcw-home: so that 3.12 issue should be solved by now
07:00 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, that's called forward thinking :)
07:01 PM pcw-home: I thought Axis ran on anything...
07:01 PM JT-Shop: I "think" it's some old library or something in Axis
07:03 PM JT-Shop: I use pyqt6 for flex and I'm the only one using pyqt6, the rest use pyqt5
07:06 PM JT-Shop: except Axis which is tk and python
07:10 PM pcw-home: Tom_L: thank's for the Mint 22 link, I think I had seen that, but forgot, and just ran into the master build issue a couple days ago
07:15 PM Tom_L: np
07:36 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <connor_9220@> That is a question. Will lcnc work with Debian 13?
09:11 PM xxcoder: more of those stupid kokak papers arrived
09:12 PM xxcoder: I wonder if its reship of last one that went to me too
09:12 PM xxcoder: if I get car towel and tire cleaner again, I guess I'll give it to bro lol
09:17 PM * roycroft is waiting for the day they ask for all the stuff back
09:19 PM roycroft: the answer, when that happens is "um no, thank you very much" of course
09:25 PM xxcoder: yeah there is no requirement for me to return things they shipped to me, in my name, by mistake
09:25 PM xxcoder: cuecat lawsuit proved that
09:26 PM xxcoder: short story, they shipped cuecats to people without asking anything, and when some people hacked it to work on whatever, they tried to get it back or charge them
09:26 PM xxcoder: but they lost the lawsuit
09:39 PM roycroft: yes
09:39 PM roycroft: if that stuff had been sent to me and i found it worthless i'd be tempted to bill the shipper the cost of disposing of it
09:40 PM roycroft: so i went to home depot today with a sample of my flooring, and found an almost perfect match
09:40 PM xxcoder: nice
09:40 PM xxcoder: I would tell them to stop, if I can figure who is shipping them lol
09:40 PM xxcoder: labels is all china sent stuff repacked to ship in usa
09:40 PM roycroft: yes, if i want to do the living room and dining room i can buy enough extra at retail to still make it a fantastic deal
09:41 PM roycroft: that's the problem, i guess
09:41 PM roycroft: are there tracking numbers?
09:41 PM xxcoder: if theres some gap in between the old and market new ones, you wont be able to see any difference
09:41 PM xxcoder: yeah
09:41 PM roycroft: if i get more i'll blend them together
09:41 PM xxcoder: it does say company names but I cant find crap on that too lol
09:42 PM xxcoder: ahh randomness would work also,.
09:43 PM wolfluffyf: cuecat... I think I have a couple of those in storage somewhere. radioshack was handing them out free with purchase. I don't think I ever plugged one in.
09:43 PM xxcoder: yours is likely keyboard type connector
09:43 PM xxcoder: both of mine is usb type, bought from librarything. one is "declawed"
09:44 PM wolfluffyf: bought? what do you use them for?
09:44 PM xxcoder: cataloging books
09:44 PM xxcoder: it saved me probably hundred hours
09:45 PM xxcoder: it was well past days of free cuecat so it was impossible to get free anyway lol
09:48 PM wolfluffyf: am I the only one here who doesn't have any form of of boot catalogging system? lol
09:48 PM xxcoder: yep they still sell em for 5 dollars. $5 for shipping so $10.
09:48 PM xxcoder: I bought my first at orginal price, and second at $5
09:48 PM xxcoder: https://www.librarything.com/more/store/cuecat lol
09:49 PM xxcoder: mostly useless now, phones can scan em now
09:50 PM roycroft: quinn's secret santa gift is awesome
09:50 PM xxcoder: one she got, or sent?
09:50 PM roycroft: both
09:50 PM roycroft: but i saw the one she sent yesterday
09:50 PM wolfluffyf: I watch the whole 10 video series... the video title generator is seriously impressive.
09:50 PM roycroft: i just saw the one she got
09:50 PM xxcoder: ahh yea. pretty cool
09:50 PM wolfluffyf: watched
09:50 PM roycroft: yes, the video title generator is amazing
09:50 PM roycroft: i haven't seen many of them yet
09:51 PM wolfluffyf: though I have a strange suspicion it went welllllll over the $150 budget limit. heh.
09:51 PM roycroft: i've always enjoyed not an engineer's videos
09:52 PM wolfluffyf: my biggest complaint was the terrible music in so many videos in the set, often with overly-long chipmaking porn. used fast forward a lot...
09:53 PM xxcoder: glad I avoided the former. yeah skipped some of chips.
09:55 PM xxcoder: I was amazed to discover that yt now auto-applies translation to english if autocaptions is not in english
09:55 PM xxcoder: used to be not the case
09:57 PM xxcoder: and alec of tech connections noticed that autocaptions now uses sentance breaks etc now. so its even better. man I remember old days of autocraptions
09:59 PM wolfluffyf: I was watching that video, and wondering why the captions were worse than usual, then he said he was trying autocaptions again. heh.
09:59 PM wolfluffyf: for example, "right protect" vs "write protect"...
10:01 PM xxcoder: fun. might let him know lol
10:01 PM xxcoder: *want to
10:02 PM wolfluffyf: he's hard to contact. I tried once to send him a video idea.
10:04 PM wolfluffyf: he likes odd applications of bimetallic switches... did you know that older vehicles used bimetallic switches for the oil pressure gauge sender? most people have no clue, and I'm sure he'd find it interesting... but you can't contact him. heh.
10:05 PM roycroft: air-coold volkswagens have them
10:05 PM xxcoder: pasted what you said to video suggestions
10:06 PM wolfluffyf: roycroft: knowing that means you know more than about 99% of people who work on cars. heh.
10:07 PM wolfluffyf: it's a clever rube goldberg device... it's a bimetallic thermostat with a heater wrapped around it, and the setpoint attached to a diaphragm. the more oil pressure, the more the heater has to run to heat the switch up enough to open, increasing the duty cycle of the output signal.
10:08 PM wolfluffyf: it converts pressure to a temperature to measure it. lol
10:13 PM xxcoder: fun
11:40 PM wolfluffyf is now known as fluffywolf
