04:43 AM Tom_L: morning
05:02 AM Deejay: hi
10:34 AM * rdtsc-w is repairing handheld barcode scanners today... probably the lowest-profit items next to PID heater cards, also very common
10:44 AM roycroft: yes, they are pretty low-profit, since the low end ones are pretty much bundled with software packages
10:45 AM roycroft: or are you talking about low-profit repairs?
10:45 AM roycroft: which would be due to the same thing - if someone gets a product for free they don't want to pay much to repair it
02:10 PM JT-MShop: steer wheels for my Jet pallet jack are falling apart... from Jet $200 each!
02:13 PM Rab: Hmm, I found a site a while back that was just pallet jack replacement parts. I don't remember any $200 wheels. Might've been this place: https://www.palletjackparts.com/store/
02:29 PM JT-MShop: thanks
02:30 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:31 PM JT-Shop: https://liftsplus.com has better cost + shipping
02:38 PM JT-Shop: got both wheels with shipping for $141
03:24 PM roycroft: so i guess the people who bought my old house are doing some remodeling
03:24 PM JT-Shop: I didn't know you sold it
03:24 PM roycroft: i was over at bring recycling yesterday, and i picked up a medicine cabinet for my bathroom because the one in the new house is tiny
03:24 PM roycroft: yeah, i finally sold it
03:24 PM roycroft: i only lost $5k :(
03:24 PM JT-Shop: awesome
03:25 PM roycroft: anyway, i want to build a medicine cabinet but that's going to be a while, and i have more boxes of stuff to unpack so i thought i'd get a temporary one
03:25 PM roycroft: i found one that looked just like the one in the old house and bought it
03:25 PM roycroft: i just unloaded it and looked inside, and recognized it as the same one that was in the old house
03:26 PM JT-Shop: small world
03:26 PM roycroft: i had added some hangers inside it that were exactly what i found in this one
03:26 PM roycroft: yeah
03:26 PM roycroft: i got it for free, because i still had some credits from my frequent buyer card
03:26 PM roycroft: but i realized also that i may have a big problem
03:27 PM roycroft: there's a ginormous mirror mounted to the wall above the sink
03:27 PM roycroft: with thin wood trim around it
03:27 PM roycroft: the existing tiny medicine cabinet is off to the left of the sink
03:27 PM roycroft: i was assuming that the mirror is held in place by the wood trim
03:27 PM roycroft: but looking at it closer, there's a good chance the mirror is glued to the wall
03:28 PM JT-Shop: ouch
03:28 PM * rdtsc-w senses a shop vac and cut-proof gloves in your future...
03:28 PM roycroft: i was hoping to just remove it and surface mount the new cabinet
03:28 PM roycroft: but long term i'd like a recessed one
03:28 PM roycroft: maybe the recess will happen now
03:28 PM roycroft: i have both
03:28 PM roycroft: but not the inspiration to deal with that problem
03:29 PM roycroft: but also not the room to store a medicine cabinet until i feel inspired to install it
03:29 PM JT-Shop: I need to do some major rearranging in the big shop
03:29 PM roycroft: anyway, it's weird that i ended up buying the one i had at the old place
03:29 PM roycroft: i keep lots of first-aid supplies, which is why i need a bigger one
03:30 PM Tom_L: long day
03:30 PM roycroft: i probably have a bigger variety of band-aids than most people
03:30 PM roycroft: i like the specialty ones - fingertip, knuckle, elbow, etc.
03:30 PM JT-Shop: I prefer to not need bandages
03:30 PM roycroft: i don't use the specialty ones often, other than the fintertip ones
03:30 PM roycroft: i prefer not to need them as well
03:31 PM roycroft: but when i need them i like to have the right ones for the job
03:31 PM roycroft: i haven't bought any in at least a decade
03:31 PM roycroft: i do nick my fingers more often than i'd like
03:32 PM roycroft: and my name is not roy underhill, so i don't see small cuts to the fingers as opportunities to stain my wood red
03:32 PM roycroft: so i usually put a band-aid on to keep the blood off what i'm working on
03:32 PM JT-Shop: all I have to do is touch something with my arms and I bruise or start to leak
03:34 PM Tom_L: things don't heal as quick as they used to
03:34 PM xxcoder: man humidity sucks. feels like raining indoors
03:35 PM xxcoder: 66% inside lol
03:37 PM roycroft: there's all this talk about how dear leader is on his death bed because of his bruises
03:38 PM roycroft: while he may be on his death bed for other reasons (like consuming so many cheeseburgers), the bruises are just a natural thing that happens when people get old
03:38 PM roycroft: and doesn't mean anything terrible in and of themselves
03:39 PM roycroft: i'm not quite at that point yet, but i expect within a few years i'll start getting bruises from minor bumps
03:39 PM roycroft: one's skin gets thinner as one ages, as generally does one's blood
03:40 PM Tom_L: especially with bp meds
03:41 PM JT-Shop: yup
03:43 PM Tom_L: i should figure out what psu these boards need
03:43 PM Tom_L: not here yet but close
04:02 PM * roycroft wonders what state his power converter is in today
04:03 PM roycroft: oh, it made it to north carolina last night
04:03 PM roycroft: it shipped on july 25 from iowa
04:04 PM roycroft: it bounced around iowa for a few days, went to arizona, then tennessee, and now north carolina
04:04 PM roycroft: i guess it's made it all the way to the east coast, so hopefully it will be afraid of the water and will start heading towards the west coast soon
04:15 PM JT-Shop: new fridge and gas cooktop arrives Monday
04:19 PM Tom_L: cool
04:22 PM JT-Shop: I think my plan is to raise the C3 all the way up and put a lot of equipment under it while I sort out where everything needs to go
04:23 PM Tom_L: what sort of equipment?
04:23 PM Tom_L: suspension parts?
04:23 PM JT-Shop: wood working
04:24 PM Tom_L: ahh
04:24 PM JT-Shop: I had it all sorted out until I put the lift in there
04:24 PM Tom_L: still aranging furniture
04:24 PM Tom_L: +r
04:24 PM JT-Shop: yup do a bit take a break do a bit
04:25 PM Tom_L: i got some scam that won't quit calling
04:25 PM Tom_L: keep blocking numbers..
04:25 PM JT-Shop: that's what I do just keep blocking
04:26 PM Tom_L: quick as i'd hang up they'd call right back
04:26 PM JT-Shop: that's annoying
04:28 PM Tom_L: haven't had a bad one in quite a while
04:29 PM JT-Shop: the gas cooktop was $500 off and has 5 burners
04:29 PM Tom_L: nice
04:29 PM Tom_L: built in?
04:30 PM JT-Shop: yup, a cooktop only
04:30 PM JT-Shop: oven is next to the cooktop
04:30 PM Tom_L: ahh
04:31 PM JT-Shop: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Whirlpool-30-in-5-Burners-Recessed-Gas-Cooktop-in-Stainless-Steel-with-SpeedHeat-Burner-WCGK7030PS/327754403
05:42 PM roycroft: what's funny is that cooktops often cost much more than a cooktop/oven combo where the cooktops of each have similar features
05:43 PM roycroft: it's that american buy less/pay more pricing model
05:43 PM JT-Shop: yup, this one was $500 off so cost effective
05:44 PM JT-Shop: when I designed the kitchen we wanted storage under the cooktop and the oven at chest level
05:44 PM JT-Shop: when we get old I didn't want to have to bend down to look in the oven
05:46 PM JT-Shop: yum taco night
05:46 PM Tom_L: enchiladas
05:46 PM xxcoder: undecided for me lol
05:47 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Shop/Roof_Frame_Render_1.jpeg
05:47 PM roycroft: i have a few details to tidy up, but that's basically my new roof-to-be
05:48 PM xxcoder: that esigns great for volume
05:48 PM roycroft: and i'm about to go to town for dinner with friends
05:48 PM JT-Shop: I like the mash scene when charles has a tooth ache and is at the local medicine man and asked what does that cure
05:48 PM JT-Shop: the guy said it cures hunger that's my dinner
05:49 PM JT-Shop: almost room in attic like I put on my dads house
05:49 PM * roycroft will add the fascias and soffits tonight, and a few trim details, then it's on to framing the front and back walls
05:49 PM Tom_L: got a couple boards to test
05:49 PM JT-Shop: cool
05:50 PM roycroft: i really want a lot of overhead space
05:50 PM JT-Shop: I still can't find my 7c81
05:50 PM roycroft: and a lot of loft storage
05:50 PM roycroft: that roof already weighs close to 2 tons, btw
05:50 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> job hunting sucks after having your own businesses for over 40 years
05:51 PM Tom_L: it would
05:51 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> people treat others so poorly
05:51 PM roycroft: 1645kg so far
05:51 PM JT-Shop: sounds like you should be old enough to retire
05:51 PM roycroft: and that's when the wood is dry
05:51 PM roycroft: i'll be getting it green, so it will probably weigh close to 2x that much when i install it
05:51 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> can't retire soon, i had too many disasters
05:52 PM * roycroft thinks he's not going to be hauling all the lumber in one trip
05:53 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> clients were bad enough, these job posters treat people like crap
05:54 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> many don't even post a salary range, they aren't even for actual jobs
05:55 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> "oh you don't talk salary, you're supposed to take what we decide you are worth"
05:55 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> what a mess of things my generation has made
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> <--- boomer
05:58 PM JT-Shop: 1945-1965 pretty good range
05:59 PM roycroft: i don't think our problems can be blamed on any one generation
05:59 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> it's the most recent one to be running things
06:00 PM JT-Shop: the folks that run things around here are nice to deal with
06:00 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> are people on linkedin just insane?
06:00 PM JT-Shop: dunno, never looked in linkedin
06:01 PM JT-Shop: even though I had many emails about it
06:02 PM * JT-Shop opinion on linkedin is it's similar to facebook and quite evil
06:04 PM * JT-Shop got the spider power distribution thing moved to the new location
06:04 PM roycroft: i have called every equipment rental company i can find in the eugene-springfield area, and none of them rent scaffolding
06:04 PM roycroft: i really don't want to buy it
06:04 PM roycroft: not for one use
06:05 PM roycroft: and going on cl and facebook marketplace is just stupid
06:05 PM JT-Shop: hmm menards does, not sure about home depot
06:05 PM roycroft: all the used scaffolding i find there is priced higher than new
06:05 PM roycroft: home depot sell it
06:05 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> does Oregon have some rule about not being able to rent scaffolding?
06:05 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> liability thing?
06:06 PM JT-Shop: get some bamboo and build some
06:06 PM roycroft: but all they sell is the narrow indoor kind (which i'm thinking of getting if i have to buy it) or the standard 5' deep kind
06:06 PM roycroft: i need 3' deep, because of narrow spaces
06:06 PM JT-Shop: I had one of those indoor roll around ones and it was great for working on the ceiling
06:06 PM roycroft: i don't know, capthindsight_ - nobody has mentioned that it's against the law, and i've never heard of it being against the law
06:06 PM JT-Shop: then I sold it
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> isn't the narrow scaffolding closer to 18"
06:07 PM JT-Shop: prob insurance issue
06:07 PM roycroft: there are some that are 24" and some that are 36"
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> ok so 24"
06:07 PM roycroft: i'll be needing it outdoors, but not during the rainy season
06:07 PM roycroft: the indoor stuff has a plywood plank for the platform (with steel ribbing underneath)
06:08 PM JT-Shop: just build some temp scaffolding like they use in shipyards
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I can rent it in the midwest
06:08 PM roycroft: it would last about a month in our rainy season and then it would rot
06:08 PM roycroft: i may build something temporary
06:08 PM JT-Shop: kind of a teepee shape with lots of places for boards
06:08 PM roycroft: i found something neat for the indoor kind
06:08 PM roycroft: there are extra shelves you can get for them - not work platforms, but just shelves
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> how about the ladder type?
06:08 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/4WYQW0YIy8c?t=712
06:09 PM JT-Shop: you can see what I'm talking about there
06:09 PM roycroft: i used to have a big shelving unit in my shop, and if i can make the space for that again, i could use the scaffold for the job, then move it into the shop and use it for shelving
06:09 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> 2-3 extension ladders with horizontal planks between them
06:09 PM roycroft: that way it won't take up a bunch of storage space and i'd have it if i never needed it again
06:10 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> https://www.amazon.com/Metaltech-Scaffolding-Extensions-Platforms-Improvement/dp/B0CQ3K1LJ1?th=1
06:10 PM roycroft: that would cost a lot, captainhindsight
06:10 PM roycroft: i only have one extension ladder, and it's a lightweight one that is decades old
06:10 PM roycroft: i don't like to use it, and would never trust it for a scaffold
06:10 PM JT-Shop: a few 2x4's could be used to build the ones in the video
06:10 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> ah you want scaffolding for <$49.95
06:11 PM JT-Shop: when you're done just take all the screws out...
06:11 PM roycroft: no, but i don't want to buy two $350 ladders plus the brackets plus the platform
06:11 PM roycroft: i'm into it for over $1k by the time i'm done
06:11 PM JT-Shop: 2x4's are $3.50
06:11 PM roycroft: yeah, i may end up cobbling something together
06:11 PM roycroft: and i really don't need to move it around for this job
06:11 PM roycroft: if i just set it up in one corner outside the shop it can stay there the whole time
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> a few people around here are handy
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> some are even engineers
06:12 PM roycroft: i hope so, because you know the old saying
06:12 PM roycroft: if the women don't find you handsome, at least they find you handy
06:13 PM roycroft: those indoor scaffolding units are $239 at harbor freight, and $300 at home depot
06:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> When I built a house. I rented scaffolding
06:13 PM roycroft: and they are the exact same thing, with different labels
06:13 PM roycroft: but i have uneven ground, and i'd need two of those units
06:13 PM roycroft: so $500 + some leveling legs
06:14 PM roycroft: and probably a cage to go on top to be really safe
06:14 PM JT-Shop: 2x4's are much more cost effective
06:14 PM roycroft: or rail to go on top
06:14 PM roycroft: yes, they are, and i'll probably do that
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> We have a ton of those inside scaffolding.. dad bought a bunch
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> sounds like you answered your own question
06:14 PM roycroft: i can assemble the inside scaffolding in 5 minutes
06:14 PM roycroft: it would take me a lot longer to build scaffolding
06:14 PM roycroft: but it would cost a lot less
06:15 PM JT-Shop: I don't see where it would take much time to build the scaffolds like I linked in the video
06:15 PM JT-Shop: they are dead nuts simple
06:15 PM roycroft: longer than 5 minutes :)
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> the Romans never rented scaffolding
06:16 PM roycroft: but yeah, i could probably knock them out in a couple hours at most
06:16 PM roycroft: they did not need scaffolding, captainhindsight_
06:16 PM roycroft: they had plent of slaves
06:16 PM roycroft: they could just climb up on the slaves
06:16 PM roycroft: or send the worker slaves to climb up on the scaffold slaves
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Rome was not built in a day
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> but what did the Romans ever do for us? 🙂
06:18 PM JT-Shop: they paid the soldiers with salt
06:18 PM roycroft: they invaded many of our ancestors' homelands and subjugated the natives
06:19 PM roycroft: but in order to do so, they built some very long, very straight roads, many of which are still in use today
06:19 PM JT-Shop: they did pave a lot of roads with slave labor
06:19 PM roycroft: so they developed the first intercountry highway system
06:19 PM JT-Shop: yup
06:20 PM roycroft: they perfected viticulture
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Xad5Rl0N2E&t=4s
06:20 PM roycroft: and if it weren't for the romans, we would never have had the great animal house toga party
06:20 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/em7HhntjG4qtf4EM7
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that was a bunch of shelving uprites..
06:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad was a crazy mofo
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (that is my mom)
06:23 PM Tom_L: he got alot done
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> he was amazing
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> got him out of the house
06:23 PM roycroft: looks like it got the job done
06:23 PM roycroft: out of the house and onto the house?
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that was 2002 - so - the shingles lasted about 20 years. (we just had it re-shingled)
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> asphalt shingles?
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes
06:25 PM roycroft: the shingles on my shop roof are totally shot
06:25 PM Tom_L: they won't insure those here now
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think he replaced the 3rd floor windows too while this was setup.
06:25 PM roycroft: some of the decking edges are rotting
06:25 PM roycroft: but the biggest problem is that the roof is sagging significantly
06:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> *2nd floor
06:26 PM roycroft: it was undebuilt in the first place, and some previous owner/tenant cut out some of the ceiling joists that the roof trusses are attached to
06:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (this house was built in the late 70's)
06:26 PM roycroft: so the trusses started spreading, causing the roof to sag
06:27 PM roycroft: i knew this when i bought the place, and have been intending to build a new roof since day one
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yeck. people are idiots
06:27 PM roycroft: the one i designed should be plenty sturdy
06:27 PM roycroft: the framing members are 6x8s
06:27 PM roycroft: dimensions of the shop are 14'x24'
06:27 PM roycroft: i do not think it will sag at all
06:28 PM roycroft: and because i'm using king posts and queen posts, all the load will be transferred straight down, not along the run of the rafters
06:28 PM roycroft: so no spreading at all
06:29 PM roycroft: ok, time to head to town
06:29 PM roycroft: ciaoder
06:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> have fun with friends!
06:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I built a whole house.. Think I blocked it out.
06:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/RvQ6S7nE7ats4vjH7
06:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 2001 - very early digital
06:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (dad took pictures of everything)
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I still have about 1000 floppies and cdroms to go through)
07:17 PM Tom_L: pcw_work, 7c81 W10? not in the manual
07:17 PM Tom_L: thanks btw...
07:26 PM pcw_work: I think that enables the RPI ID EEPROM (which we have never used)
07:27 PM Tom_L: ok, W7 W8 are also unused
07:27 PM Tom_L: for selecting eeprom?
07:27 PM Tom_L: says unsupported
07:28 PM Tom_L: TB1 TB2 are wired together and identical?
07:28 PM Tom_L: excepting orientation
07:29 PM Tom_L: the meter seems to think so
07:29 PM pcw_work: yes just 5V
08:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> omg - I found my spare 7i80 and 5i20
08:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (I have 2i20's running since 2020ish...)
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> And I mean 2 2i20's running in the same machine. I needed that much i/o
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (and linuxcnc does it without breaking a sweat)
08:21 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
08:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and when I say 2i20 - I obvously mean 5i20.. ooooff

09:10 PM Tom_L: previously: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi4/Case_top_idc.jpg
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I like those cases
09:10 PM Tom_L: i do to except for that
09:10 PM Tom_L: and now i like that too
09:11 PM Tom_L: it cut into the threads on both sides slightly
09:11 PM Tom_L: not enough to compromise them (much)
09:13 PM Tom_L: the first spi cable i did, i butchered the cable instead of the case
09:14 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/spi_cable.jpg
09:14 PM Tom_L: that was for the 7i90
09:14 PM Tom_L: not a straight thru cable
09:27 PM Tom_L: pcw_work, 7i80 TB15 alt cpu pwr... for what?
09:27 PM Tom_L: didn't see that in the docs
09:32 PM Tom_L: sry, 7c80...\
11:01 PM roycroft: it's raining here
11:01 PM roycroft: it came up suddenly
11:01 PM roycroft: not hard, but steady
11:02 PM roycroft: there was not a cloud in the sky when i went to town this afternoon
11:02 PM xxcoder: must have been from here. its crystal clear here now
11:03 PM roycroft: 100% tariff on computer chips
11:03 PM roycroft: dear leader just announced it
11:13 PM * roycroft thinks he can build a scaffold that, in his situation, will be more sturdy and secure than using a commercial one
11:13 PM roycroft: and for <$100
11:13 PM roycroft: with all materials able to be reused later
11:14 PM xxcoder: definitely doable
11:14 PM xxcoder: wonder if you could add ropes pulley system to lift stuff
11:14 PM roycroft: if i need to
11:18 PM roycroft: i'm more concerned about being able to work safely than how i hoist the heavy timbers up
11:18 PM roycroft: i have an over head winch that can handle 400kg easily
11:18 PM roycroft: and the heaviest board i need to lift is going to be around 125kg
11:19 PM roycroft: i'm kind of guessing on that
11:19 PM roycroft: it will weigh about 75kg when it's dry
11:19 PM roycroft: so probably 125 when it's green
