05:16 AM Tom_L: morning
05:38 AM NetPipe: do they make tiny bandsaw ?
05:38 AM NetPipe: for small art maybe dremmel saw
06:21 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:40 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Yes
11:54 AM Tom_L: NetPipe, https://www.dremel.com/us/en/p/ms20-01-f013ms20aa
11:54 AM rdtsc: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=scroll+saw
11:58 AM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/116238888683
11:58 AM Tom_L: :)
11:58 AM Tom_L: i think that had one too
11:58 AM Tom_L: i had one as a kid
12:03 PM Tom_L: i think what you want would be called a scroll saw not a band saw
12:14 PM roycroft: i would just use a jeweler's saw
12:19 PM roycroft: knew concepts make some great ones:
12:19 PM roycroft: https://knewconcepts.shop/collections/jewelers-saws-tools
12:19 PM xxcoder: rdtsc: yeah. amazing isnt it lol. linked to it bit ago
12:19 PM xxcoder: morning
12:26 PM lcnc-relay: <sliptonic_bradcollette@> FYI,
12:26 PM lcnc-relay: The FreeCAD community is having an real-world meetup next weekend in Springfield, IL.
12:26 PM lcnc-relay: This is a tiny meeting and very informal but there's going to be a handful of us there working on CAM stuff. If anyone is within driving distance and wants to join, ping me.
12:29 PM roycroft: i know that marius is german, but "chamfer" is pronounced (to use german syntax) as tsch, not sch
12:29 PM roycroft: therefore marius is not separate to the animals
12:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I pronounced it wrong in a video and never heard the end of it lol
12:50 PM roycroft: and that was the last time you mispronounced it :)
12:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> maybe - I don't know
12:50 PM roycroft: at least publicly
12:50 PM xxcoder: I, for one, is glad its impossible for me
12:51 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> like gib?
12:52 PM xxcoder: I dont have any spoken language
12:52 PM xxcoder: so I cannot misspeak the word lol
12:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> nycnc pronounced it as a J which suprised me
12:57 PM Tom_L: gib like gibson guitar
12:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that is always how I understood it
12:59 PM roycroft: it is pronounced with a hard 'g'
01:00 PM Tom_L: g as in gun
01:00 PM roycroft: the brits pronounce it with a soft 'g'
01:00 PM roycroft: i guarantee that nycnc guy is not a brit
01:01 PM roycroft: interestingly, oed claims that both hard and soft 'g' are british pronunciations, but soft 'g' is the only american pronunciation
01:02 PM roycroft: american dictionaries differ, however
01:03 PM rdtsc: life's too short to worry about correct way to pronounce '.gif'
01:04 PM rdtsc: toor
01:04 PM rdtsc: interesting - ctrl+d in terminal does some funky stuff with input heheh
01:30 PM roycroft: rdtsc: it's an inferior format, so i don't pronounce it at all
01:31 PM Tom_L: klingon?
01:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I bought a couple of auger bits.. They are not sharp - took a good 10 minutes and put a decent edge on them time will tell
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> irwin
01:37 PM Tom_L: read that as darwin :)
01:37 PM Tom_L: but do you have any auger bits that fit a brace N bit?
01:38 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> as in "darwin awards"? 😉
01:39 PM Tom_L: ... the old square drive ones...
01:39 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i think i have some old brace bits somewhere
01:39 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> with a brace
01:40 PM Tom_L: but did you get your wifi working?
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> no wifi to get working, at the moment. still no internet
01:50 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Raise the jibs
01:51 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Lower the misen mast, more poop on the poop deck.
02:04 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:04 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> 🏒
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - it's started..
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/uLiRdxYyPMxdah3a8
04:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> needless to say - I found out I really don't have a powerfull enough drill to drill a 1.125 hole through 2ft of oak.
04:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (That is a 3ft 1" all thread)
04:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the 2 inch spacers go into the oak 2 inches - stick out 2...
05:00 PM roycroft: i need folks' opinions
05:00 PM roycroft: my '75 chevy pickup came with a '55 oldsmobile hood ornament
05:01 PM roycroft: i kept that when i got rid of the truck, and i just found it
05:01 PM roycroft: should i sell it or should i install it on my f350?
05:01 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/365247927279
05:01 PM roycroft: that is the same as mine, in similar condition
05:01 PM roycroft: and if i keep it and install it i might look into having it rechromed
05:02 PM roycroft: it's a cool hood ornament, and it looked great on the chevy, but the f350 (2001) might be a wee bit too modern for it to look good
05:03 PM xxcoder: build a base for it, to display on shelf
05:04 PM roycroft: it looks like there are several listings for it on ebay, but nothing in sold listings
05:04 PM roycroft: so i guess there's not that much value there
05:04 PM roycroft: if i keep it i want to put it on a vehicle
05:04 PM roycroft: and it would definitely look out of place on my veloster
05:04 PM JT-Shop: I got rid of my ww2 cast iron surface plate today :)
05:04 PM xxcoder: jt nice
05:06 PM JT-Shop: it's been a paper weight since I bought it... so glad to see it go
05:09 PM * roycroft decides to put the hood ornament in storage for now
05:10 PM roycroft: i went out to get a pair of gloves out of the rear cab of my pickup and could only find one
05:10 PM roycroft: two hours later, the rear cab is a clean as when i first bought the vehicle
05:10 PM roycroft: it was still full of stuff from the move
05:11 PM roycroft: i've decided that getting side tracked is fine as long as it is accomplishing things
05:11 PM roycroft: and i did find the other glove
05:11 PM roycroft: i may get back to the original task now
05:12 PM roycroft: which is moving some rocks out of my back yard and starting to turn the hills and dales that make up my yard into something resembling a level surface
05:13 PM roycroft: a previous owner/renter grew cannabis in the back yard and had mounded up the grow areas
05:13 PM roycroft: reinforcing them with rocks so they did not erode
05:13 PM roycroft: it's going to be a tremendous amount of work fixing that, and i've been planning on doing so since the day i bought the place
05:14 PM roycroft: circumstances have not permitted that, and my neighbors behind me, who were very friendly when i first moved in, are somewhat standoffish now - i suspect in part because i've made so little progress on the yard
05:15 PM roycroft: so both to mend relationships and to actually make progress on the yard, i'm making it a point to go do a little bit of work there whenever i can
05:15 PM roycroft: a half hour twice/week will add up quickly
05:16 PM JT-Shop: slow and steady wins the race
05:16 PM roycroft: but today's half hour has so far turned into two hours of cleaning out the pickup :)
05:16 PM roycroft: yup
05:16 PM roycroft: it's also pretty dangerous out there - easy to lose one's step
05:16 PM roycroft: and i'll be spending a fair amount of time in the back yard while rebuilding my shop roof
05:16 PM roycroft: so making it safer would be good
05:17 PM * roycroft has cooled off enough now, and heads back out
05:18 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/WKhMweD4EOA?t=893
05:18 PM JT-Shop: interesting way to line up a drill
05:24 PM JT-Shop: turns out the guy that bought the rotary table and chuck and surface plate is into the same things as me restoring old cars and wood working
05:25 PM JT-Shop: when I mentioned Dixie Gun Works his mom has worked there for the last 30 years so I bought the cannon barrel from her
05:32 PM _unreal_: man what a wasted weekend
05:32 PM _unreal_: having to go to work yesterday REALLY screwed up my plans
05:52 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, that should have prompted some interesting conversation
05:52 PM JT-Shop: yup we had quite a good conversation
05:53 PM Tom_L: the older you get, the smaller you realize the world is
05:53 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:54 PM JT-Shop: he restored a 67 Nova and put a LS engine in and did a small tubbing for some huge rear tires
05:54 PM Tom_L: what year did they change from the square body?
05:54 PM Tom_L: 65? 66?
05:54 PM JT-Shop: not sure, I had one but I think it was a 70 or so
05:55 PM Tom_L: 68 was the new one
05:56 PM Tom_L: i think they both looked good
05:56 PM Tom_L: popular with 'racers' cause they were cheap
05:56 PM JT-Shop: my brother had a hurst olds that looked like a family car
05:57 PM JT-Shop: he used to street race it at New Orleans east which had a bunch of streets but no developers had built any houses
05:58 PM Tom_L: there's a couple industrial roads they use here
05:58 PM Tom_L: not as much nowdays
06:01 PM Tom_L: you get in some lap times this weekend?
06:01 PM JT-Shop: no, the track day was canceled a while back
06:01 PM Tom_L: hmm
06:02 PM Tom_L: wondered if you've tried the new tires yet
06:02 PM roycroft: i
06:03 PM roycroft: am pretty sure what i'm doing is not on the list of "fun things to do the summer after having spinal fusion surgery"
06:03 PM roycroft: some of those rocks have to weigh 75kg
06:03 PM JT-Shop: no, they canceled right after I made reservations at the hotel
06:03 PM roycroft: and they are all dug into the ground - i have to dig them out, then pick them up and put them in the wagon
06:03 PM Tom_L: sounds like the fun job the rebar was
06:04 PM * roycroft got one loaded up and hauled to the staging area in the front yard, but needs a break before attempting to unload
06:04 PM roycroft: yeah, i have lots of not fun jobs like that ahead of me
06:05 PM roycroft: there is a slab right behind my house, and i built a shed on it - one of those metal kits - for lawn and garden stuff
06:05 PM roycroft: one of the big rocky mounds has blocked access to that the while time i've lived here, and i almost have a flat, level path to the shed now
06:05 PM roycroft: i figured that i'd work on something that will be a big win for me right away first
06:06 PM roycroft: and the neighbors will definitely see that work has started, even though the ugly parts next to their yards have not been touched yet
06:07 PM roycroft: i think if they see i continue to make progress, and continue to work back to the outside edges of the lawn, they'll be ok
06:07 PM roycroft: the yard has probably been like this for many years
06:08 PM JT-Shop: I bought a house in Pascagoula Ms a long time ago that was built during ww2
06:08 PM roycroft: the good news is that, because of the cannabis farm, the soil in the mounds is really good - rich and has a nice texture
06:09 PM JT-Shop: when I cleaned the back yard it dropped 5' in the back... it was full of decades of pine needles from some giant pine trees
06:09 PM roycroft: so once i spread it out it should be easy to get grass growing (which is a temporary thing)
06:09 PM roycroft: yeah, i cleaned up a yard like that once
06:09 PM Tom_L: snakes like to hide in pine needles
06:09 PM roycroft: the back of the house was next to a hill, and there were fir and hemlock trees on the hill
06:10 PM Tom_L: at least in savannah
06:10 PM roycroft: i wasn't aware that the hill was right behind the house until i started the cleanup
06:10 PM roycroft: i must have hauled 50 pickup loads of debris to the recycling center
06:11 PM roycroft: this place is nothing like that
06:25 PM JT-Shop: hmm I need to do a bit of work at Empire tomorrow
06:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - every time you say that. The company I work for is named empire..
06:26 PM JT-Shop: this is empire comfort systems I think
06:28 PM JT-Shop: yup https://www.empirecomfort.com/
06:28 PM JT-Shop: https://www.primogrill.com/
06:28 PM roycroft: have they ever stricken back?
06:29 PM JT-Shop: I work mostly on the grill area
06:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol.. No. if you knew the original owner - you would know why he called his company 'empire'
06:29 PM * roycroft goes out to try to unload the rocks
06:31 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
07:10 PM roycroft: i got the rocks unloaded, which is good, as it made it seem like i accomplished something
07:10 PM roycroft: there's probably 10-15 more loads like that to do, so it's going to take a while
07:10 PM roycroft: but i don't feel like i'm going to trip when i go to the shed now
07:11 PM * roycroft wonders if he can accomplish something with linuxcnc this evening as well
07:17 PM roycroft: jennifer marlowe has left the building (loni anderson)
08:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/aQdFsipriEUFhUCE8
08:36 PM xxcoder: hopefully not cooked
08:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no
08:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but it was certainly a lot of clearing out the hole and then maybe a 1/2 drilling at a time
08:58 PM Tom_L: is it level?
08:58 PM Tom_L: :)
08:58 PM Tom_L: i bet that was fun
09:23 PM roycroft: you did that with a 1/2" magnum drill?
09:24 PM roycroft: don't get me wrong, that's a tough drill, but that's some really tough drilling to be doing
09:34 PM Gothia1 is now known as Gothia
09:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I tried about 3 drills... Ended up with that one..
09:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> After it got over 1/2 way through - it took a lot of clearing the hole.
09:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Tom_L: I was leveling the drill with a magnetic level. Sure it isn't perfect
09:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I really figured the silver drill below the Milwaukee would do it... It was always called the wrist breaker.. but it had less torque than our battery powered drills
10:17 PM roycroft: the milwaukee magnum drill is an impressive machine
10:17 PM roycroft: i've had mine since the early '80s, and it's still going strong
