12:12 AM Gothia1 is now known as Gothia
01:38 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> guten morgen
04:37 AM Tom_L: morning
05:45 AM Deejay: hi
05:55 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:21 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:41 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> Tom_L: http://6-f.cc/nc/index.php/s/eCtqnjetMMpqsJt
06:45 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
09:26 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wow - Vevor said they can ship me the correct part.. So - i wonder if I will get the correct part.
10:02 AM roycroft: a few years ago i bought a vevor vinyl cutter from amazon
10:03 AM roycroft: it was missing the cutter head, so i asked about it and they (vevor) said to return it and they would send me another one
10:04 AM roycroft: i asked them if the could just send the replacement cutterhead instead, because returning the whole thing would be a hassle - it was already assembled and was fairly big
10:04 AM roycroft: they told me to just keep the old one, sent me a new one, and refunded my money, so i ended up with two free vinyl cutters, one missing the cutter head
10:05 AM roycroft: apparently it's easier for them to ship whole units vs replacement parts
10:46 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> right - I am wondering if I will get a second whole sharpener..
10:58 AM roycroft: if you're lucky
11:06 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> time will tell
11:11 AM roycroft: i ended up donating my spare vinyl cutter to st. vincent de paul when i moved
11:12 AM JT-Cave: https://www.tsunami.gov/
11:12 AM roycroft: i read a short while ago that crescent city north to the oregon border is the only place in the us that still has a tsunami alert
11:13 AM roycroft: crescent city, as is usually the case, got the biggest waves in the us outside of hawaii
11:13 AM roycroft: half moon bay got some big waves too, but not as big as crescent city
11:14 AM JT-Cave: lots of earthquakes lately
11:14 AM roycroft: yes
11:14 AM roycroft: i hope we don't get the long overdue one here in my part of the world
11:15 AM roycroft: yesterday's was the sixth-largest in recorded history
11:15 AM JT-Cave: I just released mesact 2.1.8 with much improved spindle section so if you get a chance to test it I'd appreciate any feedback
11:16 AM roycroft: i'll check it out when i can
11:16 AM roycroft: i'm still struggling with the soft e-stop in classicladder
11:16 AM roycroft: i'm about ready to just crap the ladder and use estop_latch
11:16 AM roycroft: i bet i can have that working in five minutes
11:17 AM JT-Cave: I would use estop_latch for the remote estop logic
11:18 AM JT-Cave: if you need to flash a light to indicate that estop is active I'd use ladder for that
11:20 AM roycroft: i need both to turn on an indicator when estop is active and turn off a different indicator when it is active
11:20 AM roycroft: and i got the physical e-stop working with classicladder just find doing exactly that
11:21 AM roycroft: but i want to do the same with the software e-stop, and also to signal linuxcnc that e-stop is active when i engage the physical button
11:21 AM roycroft: and that's where i've been having problems
11:22 AM roycroft: i'm in the middle of a sticky work thing right now, though, and can't work on it until later
11:50 AM * JT-Shop next job is to move the 50 ton press from the big shop to the machine shop
11:52 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I didn't feel a thing in the midwest
11:53 AM roycroft: must be all the pain killers
11:53 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> lol
11:54 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> My friend's dog had sewer breath last night (not sure if it's related to tsunamis)
11:54 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> or a bad tooth
11:56 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I am on a Metra train right now and I've noticed that all the parking lots are full at the stations
11:56 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> How the fuck are you supposed to use the trains?
11:57 AM roycroft: or eating poop
11:57 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> true...
11:57 AM roycroft: you are supposed to take the train to the train station
11:58 AM JT-Shop: uber
11:59 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i am still amazed that somebody thought i was an "expert" here 😉
12:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:07 PM roycroft: afaik there is no uber where i live
12:12 PM xxcoder: morning
12:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Downtown Chicago and the train sounds like it's going to split in half
12:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> The infrastructure here is ancient
12:26 PM roycroft: some of the trains are probably ones i rode on, and i moved away from chicago in 1980
12:27 PM roycroft: because some of the trains i rode on when i lived there were from before wwii
12:27 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> were they steam? 😉
12:29 PM roycroft: electric
12:29 PM roycroft: the el has been electric since forever
12:30 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i was making a joke 😉
12:30 PM roycroft: well, in the late 1800s it was steam
12:32 PM roycroft: the l went electric in 1895, so it was only steam for a few years
12:34 PM roycroft: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Chicago_Transit_Authority_4451_at_the_Fox_River_Trolley_Museum.jpg
12:35 PM roycroft: i remember riding in cars like that in the '70s
12:35 PM roycroft: most of them were newer than that, but there were a bunch of those old ones still in service
12:35 PM roycroft: from the '20s
12:35 PM roycroft: and not these '20s
12:35 PM Deejay: you must be old ^^
12:35 PM roycroft: well that was 50 years ago
12:36 PM Deejay: yes
12:37 PM roycroft: but what i'm saying is that since i was riding in 50-year-old trains back then, it's likely there are still trains from the '70s in service now
12:37 PM roycroft: so i likely rode some of the ones that are still in service
12:38 PM roycroft: when i lived in the south suburbs i rode the illinois central commuter train downtown, then switchec to cta to get where i needed to be if not in the heart of downtown (the ic terminated at randolph street station)
12:49 PM Tom_L: old is relative. when i was a kid i thought highschoolers were old
12:49 PM Tom_L: now i know different :)
12:56 PM Deejay: :)
12:56 PM Deejay: true. relative to me, roycroft is old ;)
12:57 PM Deejay: ok, leaving now. have a nice day, cya tomorrow
12:59 PM roycroft: and i am young relative to some here
12:59 PM roycroft: but i'm old relative to most, i should think
12:59 PM xxcoder: when I saw you in person roy, you seems to be around my age, or just a little older lol
01:25 PM roycroft: folks tell me i look young for my age
02:03 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> and here i thought xx was in his 30-40's 😉
02:04 PM xxcoder: nah im basically 50
02:05 PM xxcoder: not quite 50 yet but yeah
02:05 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> ... ...then how old is roycroft? i thought he was in his 60-70's
02:06 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG2JDiZFG0o
02:06 PM roycroft: that ties together two discussion threads from today
02:08 PM roycroft: late '60s, travis_farmer
02:09 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> so i was right... must look young then if you could pass for 50's. have aged well, i would say
02:10 PM roycroft: all that good living
02:11 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i on the other hand, @ 20 i looked 40, and @ 45 i look 50-60's
02:13 PM xxcoder: when I was young, I was often mistaken for being even younger
02:13 PM xxcoder: I paid young kid rates at my senior trip to disneyland
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> and i am not living high on the horse either... or if i am, it must be a very very short horse. LOL
02:13 PM xxcoder: others all paid teen or adult
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i have never been carded for alcohol
02:14 PM JT-Shop: well crap my card reader thingy quit working... wonder if I have another one laying around in all my junk
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i hate when that happens, JT
02:15 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i have one right here...
02:15 PM lcnc-relay: *hands card reader to JT
02:16 PM roycroft: i get carded almost every time i purchase alcohol
02:16 PM roycroft: but that's because most of the local markets have adopted a policy of carding everyone every time
02:16 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> lol
02:16 PM roycroft: and they all blame it on state regulations, which is utter bullshit
02:17 PM roycroft: our "regulation" states that a person should be carded if they appear to be under 30
02:17 PM xxcoder: I never got carded when I purchase alcohol. would need to actually buy to buy one to be carded.
02:17 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> true...
02:17 PM roycroft: our drinking age is 21, as it is in most states, so that leaves 9 years of wiggle room
02:18 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> drinking age here is 4 *jk
02:18 PM roycroft: the regulation in washington is the same, or at least was when i lived there, but i got carded in washington in my late 30s
02:18 PM roycroft: because apparently i looked like i might be under 30
02:19 PM xxcoder: we might have an immortal here
02:19 PM xxcoder: jk
02:19 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> lol
02:19 PM xxcoder: reminds me of that actor that had people look basically exactly like him, but quite old images
02:19 PM xxcoder: so assuming it was same person, hes over 300 now
02:20 PM xxcoder: (one is painting)
02:21 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> maybe roycroft is immortal... have you died yet? if not, could be true... *jk
02:25 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Hmm, one of these days i need to build a enclosure for my Rpi5... something vented, but keeps the dust out...
02:25 PM xxcoder: if you have large surface area filters, then pressure requirement for fan would be very low
02:25 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> hmmm, true
02:42 PM roycroft: that's something a lot of woodworkers don't seem to understand when it comes to dust collection
02:42 PM roycroft: if you have a low end dust collector, with just a filter bag for air exhaust, you're going to signifanctly negatively impact your airflow, and thus, ability to collect dust and chips
02:43 PM roycroft: if you replace the bag with a pleated filter you'll have much more surface area for the exhaust, and will have much better airflow and chip collection
02:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but.. then it isn't a bag.. Duh.
02:47 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> if i could figure out how to have dust collection on an ATC spindle, and still change tools automatically... then my Rpi5 would not need air filters 😉
02:47 PM roycroft: i won't even get into the hooking a tiny hose up to a big dust collector and expecting it to work with your sanders thing
02:47 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> lol
02:48 PM roycroft: which is kind of a variation of the wife needs a house vac, husband wants a shop vac and thinks it can do both theme
02:49 PM * roycroft wonders how many marriages have been broken up by that
02:49 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> thats why i want 4in dust collection hose for my machine
02:50 PM roycroft: the dust hood i got for my minirouter is 38mm
02:50 PM roycroft: but for such a tiny machine that will probably work fine if i have a shop vac right next to it
02:51 PM roycroft: when i build the bigger router it will have a 100mm dust port
02:51 PM Rab: travis_farmer, I like those enclosed aluminum Pi cases that contact the hot parts and act as a heat sink. Not sure if there's one for the 5.
02:51 PM xxcoder: or feed some conehead
02:51 PM roycroft: beldar is hungry
02:52 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Rab, i have one for the Rpi4, but i will look for a 5 one
02:53 PM Rab: This kinda thing. Although it's not actually sealed, and might need active external cooling for heavy workloads. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CT93JZTR
02:54 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i think the 5 needs active cooling, so i am not sure if that style would work
02:54 PM roycroft: my minirouter controller has an rpi4, not 5, and cooling is not as critical on the 4 as on the 5
02:54 PM JT-Shop: the 50 ton arcon press with the press brake have been moved to the machine shop
02:54 PM roycroft: but i think the way i have it set up should work fine
02:54 PM roycroft: i have an intake at the front of the cabinet, with a fan sucking air in
02:54 PM roycroft: and two outlets at the rear of the cabinet
02:55 PM roycroft: i can feel quite a bit of air moving through them, and the rpi is directly inline with one of them
02:55 PM roycroft: so it gets a decent amount of airflow over it
03:08 PM JT-Shop: hmm before I roll the 50 ton press in place I need to drop the wire for the surface grinder
03:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that's a lot of tons
03:19 PM JT-Shop: I'm glad it only weighs about 600 lbs plus 200 lbs for the press brake part
03:20 PM JT-Shop: I was able to pick it up with my homemade forks on the hoe
03:20 PM JT-Shop: which is starting very well now
03:22 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@>...
03:23 PM xxcoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CAwnGRB6OM insane. no engine lol
03:23 PM xxcoder: train with no engine
03:24 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Powered by angry old men
03:25 PM xxcoder: aw I am not able to power it. im too calm
03:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> We can work on that. 🙂
03:25 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> lol
04:06 PM xxcoder: fun. I guess you could power it better if you gave elders phones to doomscroll on
04:33 PM * JT-Shop tries to remember how he got the press brake off the press so I can put it back on...
05:19 PM JT-Shop: hmm I think the motorcycle jack will work...
05:31 PM JT-Shop: but where is it?
05:50 PM Tom_L: right where you put it last
05:51 PM Tom_L: you probably used it when rebuilding the forks
05:52 PM JT-Shop: last time I used it was to move the press brake to the bottom of the 50 ton press
05:54 PM Tom_L: my kids know to put things back but sometimes even if they do it's not quite in the same spot... i'll miss it
05:58 PM JT-Shop: damn going up with the press brake on the beam is pretty hard
06:28 PM Guest6791: /nick pcw_work
06:29 PM Guest6791: well that did not work
06:32 PM Guest6791: <Tom_L> can you email me your address? I was going to send you a couple cards ( I volunteered a couple months ago and then forgot )
06:33 PM xxcoder: you had spaces before /
06:34 PM Guest6791 is now known as pcw_work
06:34 PM pcw_work: Thanks!
06:34 PM xxcoder: np
07:02 PM Tom_L: not to a guest :)
07:02 PM Tom_L: but yeah
07:04 PM Tom_L: tech@ ?
07:04 PM pcw_work: pcw@
07:04 PM Tom_L: ok
07:04 PM pcw_work: well tech will work as well
07:05 PM Tom_L: i used tech last time
07:05 PM pcw_work: RPI cards right?
07:05 PM Tom_L: the spi things yes
07:05 PM Tom_L: i was tesing the spi stuff
07:06 PM pcw_work: these are both working with SPI configs preloaded
07:06 PM Tom_L: pcw this time
07:06 PM Tom_L: i won't change the configs before trying mesaflash and spi
07:07 PM Tom_L: spi worked on the 7i90 but not mesaflash
07:07 PM Tom_L: but it can be loaded other ways
07:08 PM pcw_work: I'm going to try and get the serial option to work on mesaflash, been years since I looked at that
07:09 PM Tom_L: i've never tried serial
07:09 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure anybody is using it to be honest
07:09 PM _unreal_: I officially have internet
07:09 PM _unreal_: not AS good as what I had in the last house but still
07:10 PM _unreal_: 500MB fiber isnt bad
07:10 PM Tom_L: pcw_work, how would that work on the pc? what pin connections etc
07:10 PM _unreal_: just did a speed test got 866mb down 692 up
07:10 PM pcw_work: I was looking at the possibility of having satellite FPGA cards with all the capabilities of the root card
07:11 PM pcw_work: It currently would use the RS-422 interface on the FPGA card (like a 7I90)
07:12 PM Tom_L: serial port on the pc?
07:12 PM _unreal_: pcw_work, I am a ways off but I'm going to make my metal END mill linuxcnc
07:12 PM _unreal_: I have to convert it to CNC first
07:12 PM Tom_L: i have (somewhere) some of those 5v serial converters
07:12 PM Tom_L: i used with avrs
07:12 PM _unreal_: to
07:13 PM lcnc-relay: <rs> pcw_work: what protocol?
07:13 PM pcw_work: it could use the also but I was thinking more from a FPGA card so I could use say 10 or 20 Mb/s
07:13 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/misc_stuff/rs232_3.jpg
07:13 PM Tom_L: i did up a few of those ages ago
07:13 PM pcw_work: LBP16 (with a 16 bit CRC)
07:14 PM _unreal_: I believe MAX232 is what I did the original zipit1 serial hack with
07:14 PM Tom_L: but with the fpga you wouldn't need that
07:14 PM _unreal_: to load the custom 2mb rom
07:14 PM pcw_work: There are existing 7I90 serial configs using the protocol (same protocol as Ethernet)
07:15 PM Tom_L: what satelite cards would need a separate config?
07:15 PM Tom_L: all i know about are sserial etc
07:15 PM _unreal_: pcw_work, What card would you suggest to drive a metal lathe?
07:16 PM Tom_L: 7i96s
07:16 PM _unreal_: I have a metal lathe and mill. the mill will be the 7i96
07:16 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, really?
07:16 PM Tom_L: s gives you analog for spindle control
07:16 PM _unreal_: .......
07:17 PM _unreal_: I have a non S 7i96 currently
07:17 PM _unreal_: are there work arounds?
07:17 PM Tom_L: get a spinx card then
07:17 PM Tom_L: single analog
07:17 PM pcw_work: Got my gs10 working with the new hm2_modbus, thats an option
07:17 PM _unreal_: when I get a chance I'll snap a pic and post
07:18 PM _unreal_: I just spent almost 2 hours on the phone trying to get the internet setup and paying the mortgage
07:18 PM pcw_work: So modbus VFD control is possible also (through a 7I96)
07:18 PM Tom_L: hmm
07:18 PM Tom_L: modbus is getting more popular it seems
07:18 PM _unreal_: pcw_work, I have "little machine shop" tools
07:19 PM _unreal_: lathe and endmill
07:19 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, ask skunkworks what he used on his lathe
07:19 PM Tom_L: you don't need that much on a lahte
07:19 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, your jaw will hit the floor when I finally find places for all the adapters for the lathe and mill
07:20 PM Tom_L: i doubt it
07:20 PM _unreal_: :P
07:20 PM Tom_L: i've seen some pretty wild setups
07:20 PM _unreal_: I'm talkinga bout adapters and parts
07:20 PM pcw_work: you do want an encoder on the lathe spindle for threading
07:20 PM _unreal_: pcw_work, with out a doubht
07:21 PM pcw_work: bbl dinner time
07:21 PM _unreal_: Tom_L, I feel like we are not invited
07:21 PM _unreal_: :/
07:21 PM Tom_L: i already ate and you should have being a couple hrs ahead of the rest of us
07:23 PM _unreal_: I just spend the past 2 hours on the phone with ATT for internet issues and paying mortgage
07:23 PM _unreal_: 8:11pm
07:23 PM _unreal_: and my computer is LAGGING baddly
07:23 PM _unreal_: its getting FED by the internet "UPDATES"
07:33 PM olfluffywf is now known as fluffywolf
08:09 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/10-advanced-configuration/36918-format-and-type-of-data-passed-to-mesa-control-card-from-lcnc
08:09 PM Tom_L: that's fairly old
08:15 PM Tom_L: LBP16 allows read and write access to up to eight separate address spaces with
08:15 PM Tom_L: different sizes and characteristics. Current firmware uses seven of these spaces
08:15 PM Tom_L: is that 7 possible cards?
08:15 PM Tom_L: each having a unique socket number
08:40 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
09:34 PM Tom_L: ;program Simple serial LBP16 packet interface
09:34 PM Tom_L: ; using packet UARTS
09:34 PM Tom_L: found that
09:34 PM Tom_L: asm
11:47 PM roycroft: feasgar math, a h-uile duine
