01:06 AM xxcoder: man that guys insane https://youtu.be/V2EuDTWu2No
01:22 AM xxcoder: epoxy vase using bismuth and stuff
01:22 AM xxcoder: I thought it'd be a lamp. easy. but no
01:32 AM Deejay: moin
05:56 AM Tom_L: morning
06:16 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
10:40 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yep - I like the vevor sharpener
10:57 AM Tom_L: figure out if you got the wrong collet?
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I did
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no clue why - started a ticket but would be suprised if I actually get a replacement - time will tell
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I made it work.. 😉
10:59 AM Tom_L: of course you did :D
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> lol
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/wkPRVk1pGgkRX93Z8
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that is a 3/4 drill
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I made a ring and pressed it on to the bigger collet holder.
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/vp2bQJd2dbDoSKT99
11:00 AM Tom_L: not bad
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and now I know the difference between split point grinding and web thinning.
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> This sharpener does web thinning.
11:01 AM Tom_L: web is the 'fatness' of the drill
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> at the point - yes
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and usually gets thicker the farther down the drill you go
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> mr pete tought me...
11:02 AM Tom_L: probably needs the strength
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I guess the vevor sharpeners came in 2 different models -- ones that do split point - and ones that do web thinnning
11:03 AM Tom_L: huh
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the model that does over 3/4" does web thinning
11:03 AM Tom_L: probably matters more there
11:04 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> maybe? that could be. more consistant - unrelated to the drill size
11:04 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that could be exactly it - Great idea Tom_L
11:07 AM Tom_L: now figure out how to grind a chip breaker on them
11:08 AM Tom_L: https://www.somta.co.za/application-products/mts-chipbreaker-drills/
11:08 AM fywolfluff: I've often wanted to write a drill bit sharpener program, where I can stick a drill in my A axis and a grinding wheel in the spindle, and it puts a perfect fancy multi-facet grind on it...
11:20 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> on 95t can i do 24v control with positive or negative?
11:24 AM Tom_L: looks like the chip break feature would need to be ground into the drill flute
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> just give me a dremel... ')
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 😉
11:35 AM Tom_L: now get a pile of dull bits and turn sully loose on them
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - thought about it
11:36 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have a whole drawer
11:36 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it would be nice to get a bunch of indexes full again
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> blew the dust off the surface grinder even...
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/djt6XcCPVQjbHMNA6
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (I did the profile on the k&t)
11:37 AM Tom_L: saw that earlier
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is so hot
11:39 AM Tom_L: and that's why i plan on staying inside
11:40 AM Tom_L: 87F feels like 97F
11:44 AM JT-Shop: nap time
11:46 AM Tom_L: lunch first then yeah
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> 🥵
12:43 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> 🔥
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I seem to recall a very cool late spring/early summer
12:44 PM xxcoder: todays going to be little bit warm at 77f. tomorrow and next few days is going to suck, peaking at 85f
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Now it's mother nature's payback
12:45 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Only a month until September
12:45 PM Tom_L: wtf did i do to her?
12:46 PM xxcoder: its not personal payback
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> You took the cool early summer
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I protested, didn't do any good
12:46 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Wait maybe it is personal. 🙂
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Speaking of Fanuc...
12:47 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Any Fanuc robot fans here?
12:50 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I am convinced that Fanuc just makes things complicated so that you have to take their programming classes
01:25 PM Netpipe: someone should invent the cr1000 with traction control button and tree jump button, where it revs up and compresses aarm
02:30 PM roycroft: i've not been paying attention to the outside world, and it's lunch time
02:31 PM roycroft: i should check to see which celebrities have died, what new scandals have been discovered, who's been wrongly fired or locked up, and how many mass shootings there has been since yesterday morning when last i checked
02:32 PM roycroft: oh, and who has been newly-labeled a traitor
02:33 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Or just have lunch
02:34 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Or pretend that you live in Finland
02:35 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> It's cooler there and has less news for the stupid
02:36 PM roycroft: well nothing much new
02:37 PM roycroft: there was a mass-stabbing yesterday, but that's just a footnote
02:37 PM roycroft: i'd forgotten that mass killings are no longer newsworthy - they're just daily life
02:37 PM roycroft: and kamala harris is the target of the day for being a traitor, but she's already been labeled that
02:38 PM roycroft: and the current scandals are still epstein and the scottish excursion
02:38 PM roycroft: that's not changed since last week
02:38 PM * JT-Shop switches off the bbc
02:38 PM * roycroft moves on to eating lunch
02:39 PM roycroft: i am already distracted today
02:39 PM roycroft: i've been researching lighting for my studio
02:39 PM roycroft: i wanted to install some nice lighting there, but haven't been able to decide what to get
02:40 PM roycroft: i went out to do some work on the minirouter this morning and got sick of how dark it is in there
02:40 PM roycroft: so i went to my storage unit and pulled out a bunch of fluorescent light fixtures
02:40 PM roycroft: which is exactly what i do NOT want in that room
02:40 PM roycroft: but i'm installing them, and they'll suffice until i decide on something better
02:40 PM roycroft: at least i'll be able to see in there
02:41 PM roycroft: these are old fixtures that have actual fluorescent tubes in them, but i just ordered a box of led replacements
02:41 PM roycroft: it's funny how one can so easily get distracted
02:42 PM xxcoder: whew finally almost done on breaking down boxes lol
02:42 PM roycroft: although considering when i bought this house the idea was to completely gut it, room by room, and rebuild it
02:42 PM roycroft: and that i've gone over a year just dealing with moving my stuff
02:42 PM roycroft: it makes sense that i'm now getting distracted a lot
02:42 PM roycroft: i still have over 100 boxes in storage
02:43 PM roycroft: i've come up with a new cunning plan though
02:43 PM roycroft: in front of my shop i have one of those portable garages - the metal frame with tarps for the roof and walls
02:43 PM xxcoder: hiring m to break those boxes down?
02:43 PM xxcoder: me
02:43 PM roycroft: a bunch of my metal fabrication like stuff is there
02:43 PM roycroft: and a bunch of miscellaneous stuff
02:44 PM roycroft: but the tarps are over 20 years old, and getting ragged
02:44 PM roycroft: it leaks in there when it rains
02:44 PM roycroft: so i'm thinking that i should buy a new one to tide me over until i have proper shop space for all that stuff
02:44 PM roycroft: and i am about to start work on my roof, and need a big outdoor space to do the joinery for the timber frame
02:45 PM ffywolfluf: I got a 25-pack of led lights similar to https://www.amazon.com/5200LM-Integrated-Linkable-Basement-Workshop/dp/B0876LZ31D (I got the warm white high-CRI version) and screwed them to the ceiling.
02:45 PM roycroft: so i'm thinking i'll get a new portable garage, put it where the current one is, and then move the current one out onto the driveway, where i can use it for the joinery work
02:46 PM roycroft: in the meantime, i can put the sides up on the old one, and set it up with tables and shelves, and set up for a big garage sale
02:46 PM roycroft: which will be the opportunity to get all those boxes out of storae, as most of the stuff i'll want to sell in a garage sale
02:46 PM roycroft: then i can get the timbers for the new roof after the garage sale is over
02:47 PM roycroft: but all that will have to happen very soon, as it will probably take me a month to build the new roof, and the rainy season is only about 7-8 weeks away
02:47 PM * roycroft is very sad now
02:47 PM roycroft: i was just informed that tom lehrer has left the building :(
02:47 PM roycroft: which is also not in the news
02:48 PM xxcoder: wolf lights any good?
02:49 PM roycroft: he was 97, so he lived a good, long life
02:49 PM roycroft: but it's still very sad
02:51 PM ffywolfluf: xxcoder: I like the ones I got, with the exception that the connectors to join them are too short, and they tend to self-disconnect over time. But, they're made by like 19432 different chinese vendors, so who knows if the ones you get will be anything like the ones I got...
02:52 PM * roycroft has finished his lunch, and heads back to install the remaining light fixtures, and figure out how to wire them all up
02:53 PM xxcoder: fun. ok
02:54 PM xxcoder: i forgot to charge my box cutter from last time, so it barely had power to finish job today lol. charging now
02:54 PM xxcoder: man that box cutter probably is my best buy related to boxes.
02:55 PM ffywolfluf: when I hear "box cutter", I think https://www.amazon.com/Utility-Retractable-Cardboard-Extended-Disposable/dp/B0DBWDHVK7
02:55 PM xxcoder: thats good cheap tool for strong people
02:57 PM ffywolfluf: is there another kind of box cutter? lol
02:57 PM xxcoder: https://www.amazon.com/Cordless-Electric-Rechargeable-Cardboard-WX082L-2/dp/B0DGXHKM1Y
02:57 PM xxcoder: mine is differently colored and differently random brand name but yeah
03:00 PM ffywolfluf: different random brand... same problem I described with the lights. lol
03:00 PM xxcoder: yup
03:00 PM xxcoder: anyway it works well for me for well over a year
03:04 PM ffywolfluf: bbl, going to do more yard work until I get overheated again.
03:26 PM Tom_L: 94F feels like 106F
03:26 PM JT-Shop: I got over heated just thinking about yard work or digging with the hoe
03:27 PM Tom_L: been chillin most of the day
03:50 PM * roycroft is mostly working indoors today
03:50 PM ffywolfluf: it's too fucking hot today.
03:51 PM * xxcoder is mostly not working indoors today
03:54 PM xxcoder: my fruit fly baits finally captured one fruit fly
03:55 PM xxcoder: I havent seen one for couple days so I was it was hidden till it got captured
04:17 PM JT-Shop: I have some gnats downstairs by the pc and my sticky trap has caught a few so far
04:56 PM xxcoder: nice when traps work eh
04:57 PM xxcoder: anyway I just read about using yought on windows (outside, not inside) to lessen heat getting in. it might work, but I dont know if I will ever try lol
04:58 PM xxcoder: https://fortune.com/2025/07/14/yogurt-on-windows-cool-home-ben-roberts-loughborough-university/
04:58 PM xxcoder: up to 6f cooler which is sigificant enough to make ac job easier
04:59 PM JT-Shop: the house I had in LaPlace the AC was pretty old so I installed an attic fan in the garage and ran it on low with the garage door open a couple of inches and it made a huge difference
05:02 PM xxcoder: nice. sounds like very effective air movement system
05:08 PM JT-Shop: my neighbor came by one day and asked me what kind of oil did I use for the wind turbans... I had to chuckle a bit and said why
05:09 PM JT-Shop: he said your turbans turn faster than mine.. I said it's a secret oil
05:09 PM JT-Shop: I finally showed him the attic fan
05:10 PM xxcoder: lol
05:17 PM roycroft: even though i'm working in the house, which is air-conditioned, the studio is pretty warm, because that's where my computer rack lives
05:17 PM roycroft: and i'm installing lights up by the ceiling
05:17 PM roycroft: so i'm feeling a lot hotter than i would doing normal work indoors
05:18 PM roycroft: i have three light fixtures installed, though, with two to go
05:18 PM roycroft: i may or may not finish today - i have to head to town pretty soon
05:19 PM roycroft: but it's already way brighter in there
05:19 PM roycroft: i can work on the minirouter without a flashlight or other ancillary light now
05:20 PM xxcoder: your eyes will thank you
05:31 PM roycroft: yes, it's so nice in there already
05:32 PM roycroft: even though the lights are ugly
05:32 PM roycroft: the light is beautiful
05:32 PM roycroft: and it will be a tremendous productivity boost
05:33 PM luffywolff: I need to fix my loader. or buy a forklift. lol. I just got the top in place on the concrete table I was setting up... by making a ramp with a ladder and boards, and dragging it up the ramp with a comealong.
05:34 PM JT-Shop: comealong's can do amazing stuff
05:35 PM luffywolff: my loader can lift 1200lbs from the front of the bucket... but it needs belts and currently can't even get the bucket off the ground, much less a bucket with a table hanging off it.
05:36 PM JT-Shop: I loaded the 1400 lb surface grinder with my John Deere 310A
05:36 PM roycroft: i don't have any of that stuff like loaders or forklifts, and i'm getting ready to lift some heavy timbers up in the air to build my shop roof
05:36 PM roycroft: it's going to be fun
05:36 PM roycroft: i have winches and hoists and come-alongs and ropes and chains and pulleys and the like
05:36 PM roycroft: i'll get something worked out, but it's going to be challenging
05:37 PM JT-Shop: I made a crane like device to fit on scaffolds that used a boat winch to install the rafters on the machine shop
05:37 PM roycroft: the rafters will be no problem
05:37 PM luffywolff: a comealong and an a-frame works amazingly well.
05:37 PM roycroft: they will be 2x6s, and as this is a gambrel roof they will be short
05:37 PM roycroft: i'm not building trusses
05:37 PM roycroft: i'm stick framing
05:38 PM roycroft: it's the timber frame components that will be heavy -6x8s mostly, some of them 14' long
05:38 PM luffywolff: JT-Shop: a John Deere 310A is about six times the size of my loader. lol
05:38 PM JT-Shop: my crane thing would lift that easy
05:38 PM JT-Shop: wolf it's a beast for sure
05:38 PM roycroft: my plan is to not demo the entire existing roof all at once - i'm planning on demoing half of it, start to build the new roof on the first half, and then demo the other half
05:39 PM roycroft: if i do that i'll already have roof framing above where the heavy timbers need to go
05:39 PM roycroft: so i should be able to do the lifts with fairly simple rigging
05:40 PM roycroft: and i have an engine crane that i can use to move them around when they're still on the ground
05:41 PM luffywolff: JT-Shop: I have the loader variant of a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj4ewAn1oH8 . it's small enough to fit through most garden gates. heh.
05:42 PM JT-Shop: that's pretty small
05:42 PM JT-Shop: but could be very useful in confined places
05:43 PM JT-Shop: I think the 310A is 20 times as heavy
05:43 PM luffywolff: https://classicdozers.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/agricat-loader-berryville-va-2008-show.jpg this is the version I have. that guy must be tiny, as he makes it look big. the video shows its size much better. heh.
05:44 PM JT-Shop: that's pretty cool
05:44 PM luffywolff: it's small, but it has full-sized hydraulics and steel tracks, so can do a lot of work.
05:44 PM luffywolff: you can see the main lift rams are thicker than that guy's legs.
05:45 PM JT-Shop: my Kubota loader is pretty anemic and won't lift much over 300 lbs
05:45 PM luffywolff: 1200lbs is the most I've lifted off the end of the bucket, and it took two guys hanging off the back of it to counterbalance it. lol
05:45 PM luffywolff: I picked up the front end of a V6-powered sedan with it, but only by running the tracks forwards to keep the machine from tipping forwards.
05:45 PM JT-Shop: sounds like it has some good hydraulics
05:46 PM JT-Shop: the 310a didn't even notice the 1400 lbs of load
05:47 PM luffywolff: I want to mount a hoe on the back of it, but I haven't figured out how I'd manage the logistics of seating and controls. a flippy seat like a backhoe would end up on top of the skid steer levers...
05:48 PM luffywolff: the levers go between your legs, and you jam them into your crotch to steer.
05:48 PM JT-Shop: the 310a has a rotating seat
05:48 PM luffywolff: (did I mention it's little?)
05:48 PM JT-Shop: I saw that
05:49 PM JT-Shop: to work on the key switch I had to take the seat loose and move it out of the way lol
05:50 PM luffywolff: some backhoes have a flippy seat, that you flip over backwards, where the backrest becomes the seat and the seat becomes the backrast... probably the design that would work best with how little room I have.
05:50 PM luffywolff: I have a vintage "towable trencher" that would make a really nice backhoe attachment if I just cut off 2/3rds of it.
05:50 PM JT-Shop: I've not seen one like that but it makes sense
05:51 PM Tom_L: the guy on the agricat looks like his knees are up his nose
05:51 PM JT-Shop: my buddy has one of those backhoe things
05:51 PM JT-Shop: and I used it when I was digging in a cramped area
05:53 PM luffywolff: https://youtu.be/sPXJk13E6KM?t=111 I have one like that, but it's an old USA-made one with a kohler engine, not a chinese clone.
05:54 PM JT-Shop: yup that's what my buddy around the lake has
05:54 PM luffywolff: just cut it apart at the back of the steer rams and bolt it to the back of my loader where the ripper bar currently is.
05:54 PM luffywolff: I've used the ripper a grand total of zero times.
05:54 PM JT-Shop: takes a bit o practice to drive it around lol
05:54 PM luffywolff: then you know how frustratingly annoying getting it to where you need to dig is, or even just repositioning for a new angle.
05:55 PM Tom_L: hook it to a lawn tractor
05:55 PM JT-Shop: I made a hitch for his to make it easy to move
05:55 PM luffywolff: and it's also not heavy enough to apply any serious downforce, so you have to drag it towards you, not dig down.
05:55 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:55 PM luffywolff: having it attached to a 2500lb skidsteer would fix both those!
05:56 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
05:57 PM luffywolff: cyas
06:03 PM luffywolff: https://i.imgur.com/Rlvj6ne.mp4 that's some fancy joinery.
06:20 PM roycroft: if you know how to cut dovetails accurately that's not a hard joint to make at all
06:20 PM roycroft: it's just very time-consuming
06:21 PM luffywolff: it looks hard to me. lol
06:21 PM * luffywolff can not make accurate things from celluose foam, much less precision fits...
06:22 PM luffywolff: cellulose
06:23 PM roycroft: it's quite different to machining metals
06:23 PM luffywolff: bbl, done cooling off again, back to hard labor.
06:23 PM roycroft: but also very similar
07:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> replaced the THCAD10 with THCAD2 in the plasma.. Now I can put the THCAD10 back in the plasma..
07:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> tested it with a 1.5v battery and it showed exactly 75v.. (50 divider in the plasma)
07:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so I measured the battery - and it was excatly 1.5v
07:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so - that tracks
07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> *Now I can put the THCAD10 back in the monarch
07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wow - it has been a long day
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am running the THCAD2 as 0-5 volts.. Should give a little better resolutin
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> resolution
07:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the formula for calculating the voltage scale and voltage offset was spot on
07:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (in the QTplasmac docs)
08:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> although.. Peter... The bolt hole pattern between the thcad2 is not the same as thcad10... currently it is held in there with 1 screw
10:08 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
