#linuxcnc Calendar
01:51 AM lcnc-relay: <pink_vampire@> Tom_L: 3/4" thick
02:07 AM lcnc-relay: I want to open 2 large rectangular openings (like 12"x15"), and also doing some drilling. but that is easy.
02:07 AM lcnc-relay: the idea is to take my old inventable cnc, and get longer beams for it and rebuild it larger.
06:06 AM Deejay: hi
06:14 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> Tom_L: what gui did you said?
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i getting enough of axis :3
09:54 AM roycroft: jt recently released flexgui
09:55 AM roycroft: that is probably what tom_l would have recommended
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> yes!
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i gonna test it!
09:55 AM roycroft: it makes it easy to build your own interface
09:56 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> roycroft, that some years old, not reccently
09:56 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui
09:57 AM roycroft: well he's done a lot of work on it recently
09:59 AM roycroft: and the first commit was last year
09:59 AM roycroft: so i'd call that recent
10:00 AM Tom_L: yes flexgui
10:01 AM Tom_L: https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui
10:01 AM Tom_L: woops
10:01 AM Tom_L: https://www.gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/index.html
10:01 AM Tom_L: that's the docs
10:02 AM Tom_L: le_spud, there are several examples in the example folder
10:02 AM Tom_L: after installing the deb, from the linux menu you can copy them to the config folder
10:04 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/touch-probe3-2.png
10:04 AM Tom_L: one i did that's there
10:04 AM Tom_L: if you want touch screen he has some examples for that also
10:25 AM roycroft: i have so much to do, but now that my car is fixed i really want to go on a road trip
10:28 AM roycroft: i have a concert to attend tomorrow evening, though, so perhaps i should not do the road trip this weekend
10:33 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> TOm_L: im i have to try all examples?
10:35 AM rdtsc_ is now known as rdtsc
10:41 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> would be good to add screenshots of it :p
10:44 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Did you take the fkexgui exam before proceeding? 🙂
10:45 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Flexgui even
10:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/wm8HZhwpmA3xXZDM8
10:48 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It was time
10:53 AM Tom_L: le_potato, he has a YT for most things flexgui. there are likely videos of them
10:54 AM Tom_L: he did a whole help series for it
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> Tom_L but it bugs 😦
10:56 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jmZXuxF_Ly0
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> QTSlider bugs...
10:57 AM Tom_L: post the error
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> cant post, i cant move the slider
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> and shortcuts to arrows are doesn't work
10:58 AM Tom_L: which example?
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> mill3
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> now i try touch one
10:59 AM Tom_L: some examples are older when we first started
11:01 AM Tom_L: the examples are for a starting point
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> what parameters i have to copy?
11:02 AM Tom_L: did you copy the examples over from the menu?
11:02 AM Tom_L: each example folder is supposed to be complete
11:03 AM Tom_L: i'm not sure i've tested all of his since i don't have a touch screen etc
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> yes, copy machine stuffs in to examples
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> but i did copy examples to my machine
11:04 AM Tom_L: if you have specific issues you may mention them in #flex-dev and he is more likely to see them
11:05 AM Tom_L: i _think_ it has a discord channel but not positive
11:05 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> nah, i merged it with vscode
11:05 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> :3
11:05 AM Tom_L: i live on irc
11:06 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/libflexgui/commands.py", line 163, in jog
11:06 AM lcnc-relay: vel = -vel
11:06 AM lcnc-relay: ^^^
11:06 AM lcnc-relay: UnboundLocalError: cannot access local variable 'vel' where it is not associated with a value
11:11 AM JT-Cave: what exactly did you do to get this error?
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i try to jog with 0 velocity
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> since i cant touch the slider
11:13 AM JT-Cave: which example?
11:13 AM Tom_L: mill_3 starts fine here
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> any
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> and home_all doesnt work as well
11:13 AM Tom_L: touch screen?
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> yes
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> even in mill_3
11:14 AM JT-Cave: I did find the above error in mill 3 when doing z - with jog speed of 0
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> at velocity min and max 0
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> so i can't move it
11:14 AM Tom_L: estop -> power on -> home all
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> its cant read something what is it need
11:14 AM JT-Cave: why can't you use the (I assume jog) slider
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> because its zero
11:15 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> Tom_L, i can home separated axis but not all
11:15 AM JT-Cave: I don't have any problem using the slider
11:15 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> whats your maximum value therE?
11:15 AM Tom_L: same here, the min & max show 0 but it does change
11:16 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> hmm
11:16 AM Tom_L: the jog velocity does change
11:16 AM JT-Cave: they show 0 so that's a configuration issue
11:16 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> where is it getting the value?
11:16 AM Tom_L: and i can see the axis digits move
11:17 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> Tom_L yours zero min max as well?
11:17 AM Tom_L: that is likely set in the [DISPLAY] section of the ini
11:17 AM Tom_L: yes but the slider does change the velocity
11:18 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> not configured at display section
11:18 AM Tom_L: home all also works here
11:19 AM Tom_L: i'd have to look in the ini to see where
11:19 AM JT-Cave: I don't think those jog min/max labels are even used anymore... I have to look more
11:20 AM Tom_L: i explained some examples are older and done as developement progressed
11:21 AM Tom_L: the min max also show 0 in touch-probe3 so maybe they aren't even used now
11:22 AM Tom_L: the slider works
11:22 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> not at me 😢
11:22 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> other works
11:22 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> max is 99
11:22 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> so should work but no
11:23 AM JT-Cave: I don't see the min max jog labels in the code anywhere
11:23 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> in QT
11:24 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, looks like those jog min/max labels are in your samples only
11:24 AM Tom_L: max_jog_vel_lb in the ui
11:24 AM Tom_L: is mill_3 mine?
11:24 AM Tom_L: i don't remember doing that one
11:24 AM JT-Cave: mill 3 rpi 3 and a couple other
11:24 AM JT-Cave: well heck I don't remember
11:24 AM Tom_L: hah
11:25 AM Tom_L: did you rename them?
11:25 AM JT-Cave: yup that you... I know because there's no layouts used
11:25 AM JT-Cave: I'd have to look later... important activity coming up soon
11:25 AM Tom_L: ok
11:28 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> max_vel = parent.inifile.find('TRAJ', 'MAX_LINEAR_VELOCITY')
11:28 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> why is it at traj?!
11:28 AM Tom_L: le_potato, it may be set in [TRAJ]
11:28 AM Tom_L: https://www.gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/labels.html
11:28 AM Tom_L: and i believe it was renamed after that example
11:28 AM Tom_L: one sec
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> Tom_L it was in traj!
11:30 AM Netpipe: https://i.imgur.com/Ox0MUMG.jpeg
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> 'DISPLAY', 'DEFAULT_LINEAR_VELOCITY')
11:30 AM Tom_L: can you edit the ui?
11:30 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> yes and the source as well
11:30 AM Tom_L: the label was renamed max_velocity_lb
11:31 AM Tom_L: it shows up here now
11:31 AM Tom_L: all i changed was the name in the ui file
11:31 AM Tom_L: the label may need to be wider
11:32 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> these should be good to custom configure under like [flexgui] section
11:33 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> if parent.inifile.find(f'JOINT_{i}', 'HOME_SEQUENCE') is None:
11:33 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/max_velocity.png
11:33 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> this is home all
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> haha
11:34 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i fixing as well 😄
11:34 AM Tom_L: ok
11:35 AM Tom_L: things changed fast during dev and some older examples or elements may have been overlooked
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> home all works as well!
11:37 AM Tom_L: what did you change?
11:38 AM Tom_L: i'll try to fix the examples
11:39 AM Tom_L: for the velocity
11:39 AM Tom_L: those labels were renamed
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> the other thing, shourcuts doesnt work if your are in editor
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> and cant click from it
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> to outside
11:41 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> because it capture the keys
11:45 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> so for now back to axis
11:50 AM Tom_L: ok i think i fixed all the examples for velocity and will push those
11:53 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, PR #332 for velocity label changes
11:58 AM Tom_L: le_potato, which example was that in?
12:16 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> like all
12:19 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> but if i cant use shortcuts its a big no for me
12:20 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/issues/310
12:24 PM Tom_L: ahh, yeah he was working on those and hit a wall i think
02:22 PM ffywolfluf: simulating the g-code output from linuxcnc... for some reason the preamble is making it end up at Z=-.5110. which is... not good.
02:23 PM ffywolfluf: I'm not sure what line is doing it, because it doesn't show the line you're on when single-stepping until you get to a G0/G1?
02:23 PM ffywolfluf: I have to press single step five times before any lines get highlighted.
02:24 PM ffywolfluf: the actual code simulates fine; it's something in the preamble.
02:25 PM ffywolfluf: and I don't remember my g-code well enough to know what the heck the G5x and Mwhatever codes are doing. lol
02:28 PM ffywolfluf: why does it not highlight the current line when single-stepping? is annoying.
02:29 PM ffywolfluf: I think it's a M6 tool change that's causing it to rapid into the table? that seems unlikely.
02:32 PM ffywolfluf: it's that or a G54. hrmm.
02:51 PM ffywolfluf: yes, it's the tool change. hrmm.
02:51 PM ffywolfluf: I'm going to assume it's a sim thing and not ivestigate further unless it still does it while air cutting on the actual machine. heh.
02:55 PM JT-Mobile: Yo
02:57 PM ffywolfluf: heyas
02:57 PM ffywolfluf: fixed your connection? heh
02:59 PM xxcoder: or more likely, arrived at whatever place after driving
02:59 PM JT-Mobile: Yup
03:00 PM xxcoder: probably better to set it to not reconnect during driving lol
03:00 PM JT-Mobile: I don't look at it when driving
03:01 PM xxcoder: thats why yeah :D
03:04 PM ffywolfluf: I haven't done any cnc in too long. I have no idea why a M6 is rapiding. lol
03:07 PM xxcoder: thats always machine config. I dont remember more specifically for linuxcnc but yeah it can be set to park and wait for you to change tool, to full script to auto change tool
03:08 PM ffywolfluf: It pops up the box asking me to change the tool... and then proceeds to rapid into the table. I think it's an offset issue, maybe.
03:09 PM ffywolfluf: I don't remember how I have the real mill set up, so if it's just a sim thing, I can ignore it.
03:29 PM xxcoder: https://youtu.be/u4_a5QC2y0U
03:29 PM xxcoder: pretty interesting. guy makes a door for workshop
03:33 PM * ffywolfluf is already watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0R0ZlBWVfY (not making-things related)
03:39 PM xxcoder: gonna love autocaptions. chamfers is "shamfers" and its "shame size"
03:39 PM xxcoder: think its supposed to be "same" on latter
03:42 PM ffywolfluf: I've come across a couple videos lately with AI dubbing, and it's fucking terrible.
03:42 PM xxcoder: autocaptions is older than ai
03:42 PM xxcoder: I still remember autocraptions era
03:42 PM ffywolfluf: take everything autocaptions gets wrong, and then get it all equally wrong again translating it, and then even more wrong reading it.
03:42 PM ffywolfluf is now known as fluffywolf
05:21 PM roycroft: well i went on a slight adventure today
05:22 PM roycroft: i've been concerned since i moved here that there is only one road from here down to the valley, and that road closes somewhat frequently during inclement weather or due to fires or wrecks or landslides
05:22 PM roycroft: but i did some research and there are some forest service roads on the other side of the river and reservoir that can get me down to the valley, so i took that route today on the way home
05:23 PM xxcoder: probably had some nice views too
05:23 PM roycroft: it was a nice drive, but very twisty, and about 15 miles if it is gravel
05:23 PM roycroft: occasionally - it was all in the forest, so i could not see too far
05:23 PM roycroft: but i did drive through a couple small old growth stands, which surprised me
05:24 PM roycroft: i thought there was virtually no old growth around here any more other than in the wilderness areas
05:24 PM roycroft: and especially not so close to the roads
05:24 PM roycroft: there were several stands of very mature second growth as well
05:24 PM roycroft: but i've now proven that there's another way to get to the valley in an emergency
05:25 PM xxcoder: indeed
05:25 PM xxcoder: always good to know
05:25 PM roycroft: although i would not want to drive that way in the winter, even with my pickup, unless it were a true emergency
05:25 PM roycroft: and it will never be my 'scenic' way home
05:25 PM roycroft: in fact, the main highway is much more scenic
05:25 PM roycroft: it also took me a bit over an hour, vs. 30 minutes from the turnoff if i took the main road
05:26 PM roycroft: there is one other road that i know of to get down to the valley, but is about a 2-1/2 hour drive, and requires taking a scenic road that is closed in the winter
05:27 PM roycroft: not just impassible, but closed - they shut the gates in november and open them in may
05:27 PM xxcoder: oh boy. if I lived where you do now, I'd have minium of month food at all time
05:28 PM xxcoder: in case road gets destroyed in middle of winter
05:29 PM roycroft: i would not be happy, but i would be able to live for a month cut off from town
05:29 PM roycroft: and i can always go to the local grocery store
05:29 PM xxcoder: while thats true, I'd have very long term food too. like food that expire in 2 years or more
05:30 PM roycroft: i was just at target getting something, and they had annie's mac and cheese on sale - buy one get one free
05:30 PM roycroft: target is already the cheapest place for that, but i bought 20 boxes
05:30 PM roycroft: i don't eat mac and cheese often, but it can be handy in a pinch
05:30 PM xxcoder: yeah
05:30 PM roycroft: and if you add a can of tuna to it it starts resembling real food
05:31 PM xxcoder: just keep your cats away lol
05:31 PM roycroft: but yeah, i stock up on stuff like that
05:31 PM roycroft: whenever i open a can of tuna for my dinner i always give them a little plate of it
05:32 PM roycroft: speaking of which, winco had tuna on sale for 88 cents last week, so i stocked up on that as well
05:32 PM xxcoder: not bad
05:32 PM roycroft: i needed some staples to repair a stand that i need to set up so i can unload the cab of my pickup, and i bought some when i went to town today
05:32 PM xxcoder: I havent had them for quite a while. maybe ill get some bread and tuna soon lol
05:33 PM roycroft: but now it's the heat of the day, and i'm not feeling motivated to go outside and do the repair
05:33 PM roycroft: perhaps i'll do that tomorrow morning before it gets hot
05:33 PM xxcoder: interesting. quite cool hre
05:39 PM roycroft: it's not wicke hot here
05:39 PM roycroft: but warmer than i prefer if i'm going to work outside in the sun
05:39 PM Tom_L: was a humid sticky hot here
05:39 PM Tom_L: 95F
05:40 PM Tom_L: after a shower overnite
05:41 PM roycroft: that could be the beginning of a bad novel
05:42 PM roycroft: "it was a humid, sticky day"
05:42 PM xxcoder: when its very humid and you need a drink, just wave a cup around and it'll get full
05:45 PM Tom_L: roy, you get the ladder for the estop figured out?
05:50 PM roycroft: not yet
05:50 PM roycroft: i'll work on it some more this evening
05:50 PM roycroft: i'm trying to convince myself to go outside and do the work i need to do
05:50 PM roycroft: if i succeed in convincing myself then i'll be busy for a couple hours
05:51 PM roycroft: if not, i might spend a bit of time on the ladder stuff before dinner
05:52 PM Tom_L: i was trying to figure out how to mod a sim to add ladder
05:52 PM Tom_L: just to mess around
05:58 PM xxcoder: wow blondihack video is interesting
05:59 PM Tom_L: had to find the right sim hal to add it to but i have ladder on the menu now
06:01 PM olfluffywf: she makes good videos.
06:02 PM xxcoder: always. been watching for few years
06:02 PM olfluffywf: I wish she'd make videos on her other hobbies - she's actually a programming/electonics nerd, with machining as a side hobby.
06:02 PM xxcoder: can always make another channel
06:02 PM xxcoder: like hobby cnc has 3d printing stuff and cnc, and other channel about racing
06:03 PM xxcoder: ryu have 4 channels, though I only watch one
06:03 PM roycroft: she makes good money with her blondihacks channel
06:03 PM roycroft: and it probably occupies more of her time than she would like already
06:04 PM roycroft: people don't realize how much time it takes to make a decent youtube video
06:04 PM olfluffywf: ryu... only ryu I can think of plays super mario maker.
06:04 PM roycroft: a 17 minute video can take 20-30 hours to produce
06:05 PM xxcoder: yeah he does.its always been perfect dinner channel for me for quite a while now
06:05 PM olfluffywf: roycroft: unless it's adam booth. then a 87 minute video takes 20-30 minutes to produce. or at least it feels that way watching them. lol
06:05 PM * roycroft decides go to outside and see how well he can tolerate the heat
06:05 PM roycroft: abom has his wife to help
06:06 PM olfluffywf: I just mean they feel way, way too long, and that they could benefit from a whole lot more editing.
06:06 PM olfluffywf: we don't need to admire your shaper making curlies for 14 minutes straight. etc.
06:08 PM olfluffywf: I'm about to head outside too... going to hopefully set up a concrete table I got at a yard sale like two years ago.
06:09 PM olfluffywf: but to move it, I need to move my equipment trailer, then move my van, then set up some pavers as a foundation for it, then move the heavy concrete bits... and before I can move the trailer, I need to mow the spot I'm moving it to... and before that,... and before that, I need to shave a yak...
06:23 PM Tom_L: ok i entered my first ladder example but don't know wtf :)
06:29 PM Tom_L: roycroft, when you get a chance link the video you are using
07:03 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:11 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:17 PM xxcoder: steak fries and breakfast egg sustage muffin
07:17 PM xxcoder: yummy
07:44 PM roycroft: i'm making fettuccini with seared ahi
07:44 PM roycroft: i got the outdoor work done, and the front cab of the pickup emptied out
07:44 PM xxcoder: nice
07:45 PM roycroft: the back part of the cab is going to take a while to deal with, but that's ok - getting the front done makes it easy to drive it again
07:45 PM xxcoder: I cant really cook well, but sometimes I put little bit of work for nicer meals like today
07:45 PM * roycroft is proud of himself for going out in the hot sun
07:45 PM roycroft: back in a previous life i cooked in several restaurants
07:46 PM roycroft: i would not call myself a chef, and while they were not fast food restaurants, they were also not michelin star restaurants
07:46 PM roycroft: i have some cooking skills, though, i think in can say
07:47 PM roycroft: btw, last week, right before i took my car in for the clutch job, i was getting 32mpg
07:47 PM roycroft: today, even with the long, winding, steep, gravelly road, i got 42mpg
07:47 PM roycroft: the best i've ever gotten with the car
07:47 PM Tom_L: rest was burned up in clutch heat
07:48 PM roycroft: which tells me the clutch was already weak when i bought it, although i did not feel it slipping until recently
07:48 PM roycroft: yes, tom_l
07:48 PM Tom_L: which may have been welcome in winter
07:48 PM roycroft: and i never smelled it burning
07:48 PM roycroft: there are better ways to generate heat in a vehicle than burning the clutch :)
07:48 PM Tom_L: no doubt
07:56 PM olfluffywf: and instead I got nothing done moving the table! went outside, and in the two hours since last time I was outside, my eucalyptus decided to drop a 7" diameter branch across the road, that the neighbors were having to drive around. so instead I did tree clearing instead of table moving.
07:56 PM olfluffywf: and it's way, way too fucking hot out there for tree clearing.
07:57 PM Tom_L: seems there's been an unusual amount of that this year
07:57 PM Tom_L: at least around here
07:59 PM olfluffywf: I need to just remove that tree. it's not healthy and drops branches every time there's high wind.
08:00 PM olfluffywf: it's a bit sketchier than I feel comfortable climbing and cutting, but tree services cost too much.
08:02 PM Tom_L: alot less than a broken back
08:04 PM xxcoder: I would use ladder and someone to do rope pulls
08:05 PM xxcoder: makes it safer, if not safe
08:05 PM xxcoder: also take it slow
08:07 PM olfluffywf: it's not a ladder-sized tree.
08:08 PM olfluffywf: it's a get my gaffs and harness out of storage sized tree.
08:10 PM xxcoder: I know what you meant, but "storage sized tree" lol
08:12 PM olfluffywf: it's a get-my-gaffs-and-harness-out-of-storage sized tree.
08:12 PM olfluffywf: happy? :P
08:12 PM xxcoder: lol
08:13 PM olfluffywf: I have the proper equipment to remove it myself; I do not have sufficient skills and experience for how sketchy the tree is.
08:14 PM xxcoder: how is it dangerous anyway? is thunk brittle or something?
08:15 PM olfluffywf: it's been topped repeatedly and now all branches grow out at corner angles and then snap off when there's wind.
08:16 PM xxcoder: oh boy
08:17 PM olfluffywf: I want to cut it down to a tall stump, and then coppice it as a short tree, instead of topping it repeatedly like the last people did.
08:17 PM olfluffywf: (eucalyptuses essentially always regrow from stumps)
08:18 PM xxcoder: not safe enough to simply chop it down from little bit higher, then make flat stump after that?
08:18 PM xxcoder: the usual "v" where you want it to pull it towards, and start cutting other side type
08:19 PM olfluffywf: too tall to remove other than from the top down
08:19 PM olfluffywf: will hit things
08:19 PM xxcoder: ok
08:19 PM olfluffywf: took a nice chunk out of my fence today! heh
08:20 PM olfluffywf: a medium-sized bucket truck would make it super easy. heh.
08:20 PM olfluffywf: with how easily the branches snap off, I really don't want to be climbing one while cutting, in case the springing makes it snap...
08:22 PM xxcoder: take branches off?
08:22 PM olfluffywf: but all the branches seem brittle, not just where they come off the previous cuts. there's a couple widowmakers dangling already.
08:22 PM olfluffywf: too tall/long
08:22 PM xxcoder: I remember those rope with saw in middle

09:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - well... I bought a vevor MR-20G drill sharpener.. everyone seems to love it.
09:07 PM Tom_L: are you part of the everyone?
09:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - yes.. it is way way better than the drill dr.. But.. This is the the one that does drills up to 3/4 or so.. so it has 2 collets - ones for the smaller range of drills and ones for the bigger drills - the collets are different sizes. But the bit collet they sent along is not right.
09:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/13CsMFkcPrE1L6AKA
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the bigger collet holder is 5 sided.. (the small one just has the 2 flats)
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> as far as I can tell - There is no way for the big collet to work in my sharpener
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I started the vevor support ticket but I am not holding my breath.
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> So...
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have a machine shop..
09:11 PM roycroft: i have a drill doctor, andi use that for small drills
09:11 PM roycroft: anything bigger than 3/8" i just grind by hand
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZQNAuCoFZ3iqeQyj9
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/V6kRLQ6jX12j5Awd6
09:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this was a 3/4 inch drill
09:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/6xuPcuKaQV7ML4kH9
09:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> seems to work
09:14 PM olfluffywf: is this the one there's like two youtube videos on it not sucking? I've been thinking of trying one as well.
09:14 PM olfluffywf: I have a few cheaper ones, including a drill doctor, and they're totally worthless.
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I like it
09:15 PM olfluffywf: ... ouch, that model is over $400?
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> some where around there
09:17 PM olfluffywf: too much for me.
09:18 PM olfluffywf: that's more than a week's pay... I could probably get less bad at hand sharpening if I spent a full week practicing. lol
09:39 PM roycroft: it only takes a few minutes to learn how to grind larger size drills
09:41 PM roycroft: it's the first thing we taught when we went into the machine room on the first night of machining class
09:42 PM roycroft: it's just a matter of proper stance - it's one simple motion on each flute
09:46 PM roycroft: i use the drill doctor for small drills because i can't see them well enough to position them properly for and grinding
09:46 PM xxcoder: and errors is probably more forgiving for small drills anyway
09:46 PM roycroft: i get really good grinds with the drill doctor
09:46 PM xxcoder: nice
11:20 PM olfluffywf: roycroft: the funny thing is, I've never gotten an acceptable grind on the drill doctor. ever. lol
11:20 PM olfluffywf: it usually has no relief angles, and sits there spinning without cutting.
11:20 PM olfluffywf: (the bits sharpened with it)
11:21 PM olfluffywf: it seems to be incredibly sensitive to the helix angle of the flutes, the thickness of the web, the exact shape of the web, etc, and just doesn't work unless you happen to have the exact drill bits they designed it for.
11:23 PM olfluffywf: no relief, negative relief (cutting edge is lower than the trailing edge), no chisel, super wide chisel, malformed chisel,...
11:26 PM wolfluffyf: grrr
11:26 PM wolfluffyf: <olfluffywf> it seems to be incredibly sensitive to the helix angle of the flutes, the thickness of the web, the exact shape of the web, etc, and just doesn't work unless you happen to have the exact drill bits they designed it for. <olfluffywf> no relief, negative relief (cutting edge is lower than the trailing edge), no chisel, super wide chisel, malformed chisel,...
11:40 PM roycroft: i guess i must have the exact drills they designed it for
