04:20 AM Tom_L: morning
04:59 AM Deejay: hi
05:35 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:03 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
07:34 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> meisterdippel@: is this in a fridge?
07:41 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> .le_potato@: you wanted something cool 😂
07:42 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> no, it's a dental mill
07:44 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> AMANN GIRRBACH Ceramill Mikro 5X
07:46 AM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> meisterdippel@: why they put in to a fridge?
07:53 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> .le_potato@: this is just the color / coating,
07:53 AM lcnc-relay: this is a solid aluminum block
08:15 AM rdtsc-w: interesting toolchanger :)
08:32 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I forgot about this.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llwq5QKDgWo
08:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> this is the guy who creates a lot of this...
08:34 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hEEp07c7ew
10:29 AM indy_ is now known as indy
10:49 AM rdtsc-w: after getting OD7+ safety glasses and an IR test card, got a chance to test one of the two 25W 1064nm laser modules from scrap... completely dead. Behaves exactly like a diode with exponential current, but zero photonic emission. Opened the module, no visible damage; not much to see unless disassembled to the die (unsure if that can even be done)
11:42 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> .le_potato@ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh4YD0d071c
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39q6kvrSBSk
02:13 PM rdtsc-w: interesting... thought that laser module was bad - turns out it needs 10A or more to start emitting - it could be old and worn though
02:53 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> How do you start a program in AXIS from a line number other than 1 without editing the program?
02:53 PM xxcoder: hmm I remember that it IS possible but its been so long
02:54 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Say you stop at line 200 and then wish to start up again at line 200
02:54 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Yeah I just had brain surgery and can't remember
03:05 PM xxcoder: freecad blog has tutorial on sheet metal folding cad. interesting
03:06 PM Tom_L: capn, right click on the line
03:07 PM Tom_L: make sure the spindle etc are on because it will start from that line regardlesss
03:07 PM Tom_L: -s
03:08 PM Tom_L: i've added spindle lines on occasion to start mid program
03:11 PM Tom_L: left click to hilite the line then right click on it and a popup will show up
03:12 PM Tom_L: comps like spindle at speed etc could interfere
03:20 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Okay thanks
04:29 PM slobodan__ is now known as slobodan
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - the blade that stopped cuttting the non-magnetic shaft is cuttting the magnetic stainless
06:06 PM xxcoder: nice
06:07 PM xxcoder: it might be regular steel while nonmagnetic one is stainless?
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> maybe - but it sure is shiny for being around the shop forever
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but - maybe - it will work for what I want
06:08 PM xxcoder: would be lovely if we had easy test for metals
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you can get those testers for like 20k
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the guy had one that was testing the silver contacts
06:09 PM xxcoder: yeah I remember theres one for plastics too, and quite expensive too
06:09 PM xxcoder: not as expensive as 20k ouch but yeah
06:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> like
06:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://ims.evidentscientific.com/en/products/xrf-analyzers/vanta?creative=761093446315&keyword=handheld%20metal%20analyzer&matchtype=p&network=g&device=c&campaignid=22733435969&adgroupid=184768593794&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22733435969&gbraid=0AAAABALRtDJMPF4OfolEaweKVyFS5GnqZ&gclid=CjwKCAjw7MLDBhAuEiwAIeXGIQyKHE6OXntYV3eqXS9NNndUa7xd9zpZadWpG4Jd0yxK_3Qmyz_RHhoC58UQAvD_BwE
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is heavy.. 12ft long https://photos.app.goo.gl/hLET2nbtN4ZZU6TW9
06:13 PM xxcoder: my spine aches with that sight
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - after pullying the well pump - I am already sore
06:15 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so - it is what it is
06:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you kinda have to commit
06:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and it cuts that bar pretty quick
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have 3 cut off already
06:19 PM xxcoder: nice
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - drilled a 3/4 hole also
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think this is it
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> damn i wish i had a 5 axis dental mill like olli
07:15 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> instead i just brought home a 4 axis dental mill 😦
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> but it has 2 spindles....
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> i like playing with it OEM, because its alll nice and polished everything is nice
07:16 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> except it doesnt do what i want, which is gcode
07:17 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> so, even thought it has a really fancy SBC, and motion controller, it specifically said on the motion controllers website, "not sutible for gcode"
07:18 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> i would post some pics, but they cutoff 3g cellphone service this week so i havent had a phone for a few days, and im finding it a struggle to really care about not having a phone
07:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> keeps telling himself.. This is for a tree house...
07:35 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/970073761770512384/1393387599623753848/motion.png?ex=6872fcd3&is=6871ab53&hm=e868f671be14b43a6c0dcc5ffbd56bd4615a6ce4d1573ed1da32e599b59b0847&=&format=webp&quality=lossless
07:35 PM xxcoder: sigh another machinist channel dropped because guy uses way too much special effects
07:36 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> 2x highspeed atc spindles and highpressure coolant, this dentist toy is kinda neat
07:37 PM xxcoder: neat
07:39 PM lfluffywof: I found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDKdLZob5rI the day before last, for random machinist channels... 12 subscribers. lol
07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that might work...
07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/Mad1g8LeVeshPQbC6
07:48 PM xxcoder: tapered a little?
07:51 PM Tom_L: perspective
07:51 PM lfluffywof: I have like 500 endmills. I'm thinking of buying https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BGPXFPZZ/ anyway, because I can't remember if I have any sharp 1/8 ones good for aluminum. Any opinions on these chinese ones? they have decent reviews.
07:52 PM lfluffywof: and they're cheap enough that I won't mind experimenting with how fast they can cut...
07:52 PM Tom_L: https://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/
07:52 PM Tom_L: or https://onlinecarbide.com/
07:53 PM lfluffywof: I probably have a problem. Hi, I'm fluffywolf, and I'm an endmill hoarder.
07:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> xxcoder@ no?
07:54 PM xxcoder: must be illusion then lol
07:55 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, that ss must have a lower nickel content
07:56 PM lfluffywof: are those mounts for the incredibly overkill treehouse?
07:57 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, are you building it in the top of those trees by the tower?
07:57 PM Tom_L: :)
07:57 PM Tom_L: be a nice lookout
07:58 PM lfluffywof: those are $12... are they six times better than $2? heh
07:58 PM Tom_L: probably
07:59 PM Tom_L: i like em
07:59 PM lfluffywof: the second site doesn't even have long length 3 flute 1/8...
08:00 PM lfluffywof is now known as fluffywolf
08:00 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't trust a long length .125" em anyway
08:01 PM Tom_L: too much tool deflection
08:01 PM Tom_L: i dunno what DLC coating is for
08:01 PM fluffywolf: I dunno what dlc coating *is*.
08:01 PM fluffywolf: lol
08:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Tom_L: about halfway down the hill between the tower and the house
08:02 PM Tom_L: Diamond-Like Carbon coating
08:02 PM Tom_L: sounds more like a sales pitch than a true coating
08:05 PM Tom_L: https://onlinecarbide.com/1-8-2fl-x-long/
08:05 PM Tom_L: 1" loc
08:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> seriously thinking that we put a rope line across the valley then.. 😉
08:06 PM fluffywolf: https://aurorascicorp.com/what-is-dlc-diamond-like-coating/ companies selling DLC coatings seem to like DLC coatings.
08:07 PM Tom_L: i had a zip line between 2 trees years back
08:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it would be 500 ft of zip line
08:07 PM Tom_L: one tree is gone now and the other is blocked by the patio
08:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> have to test for terminal velocity.. lol
08:08 PM Tom_L: i put a big inner tube at the end
08:08 PM Tom_L: and a clamp on the line
08:08 PM fluffywolf: "Most DLC coatings start degrading at temperatures over 400ËšC. " I think I have other problems if my endmills are passing 400C.
08:10 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Lakeshore_vs_Online1.jpg
08:10 PM Tom_L: the lakeshore had a bit higher helix
08:11 PM Tom_L: ZRN coated iirc
08:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the monarch is working great - drilled the 3/4 hole at around 350 rpm - no back gear.
08:12 PM fluffywolf: reading random sites seems to suggest DLC is the best option for sticky aluminum, which covers the 4x1/2" bar stock I'm working with...
08:12 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, no pilot hole?
08:14 PM Tom_L: fluffywolf, add a couple of these to your collection: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/cutter5.jpg
08:14 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/cutter6.jpg
08:14 PM xxcoder: its definitely bit aged. I remember that pic lol
08:14 PM fluffywolf: I have a small collection of horizontal mill cutters, that I've never used. don't remember if that shape is in there or not.
08:16 PM fluffywolf: I have a 12" insert face mill somewhere, that I've also never used. lol
08:16 PM Tom_L: chamfer, corner rounding, threadmills...
08:16 PM fluffywolf: I don't have a machine anymore that can spin it. I was forced to give away my knee mill and 15x6 lathe a couple years ago.
08:18 PM fluffywolf: all I have now is my sherline mill, sherline lathe, a shoptask mill-lathe combo... and that face mill weighs more than the entire sherline mill. lol
08:19 PM Tom_L: i have the spindle off my sherline...
08:20 PM fluffywolf: I had a nice B&S #2 vertical mill, that could happily spin a 12" face mill... but no more.
08:20 PM Tom_L: about the only thing 'sherline' on the mill
08:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Tom_L: center drill. Then maybe 1/4? It was whatever was in the chuck
08:20 PM Tom_L: yeah, that's usually what i go with
08:20 PM Tom_L: or laying on the bench
08:24 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Seems pretty decent to machine.. no clue what it is
08:25 PM Tom_L: . These steels, like grades 409, 430, and 439, contain a high percentage of iron and have a ferritic crystal structure, making them magnetic
08:26 PM Tom_L: . These steels, such as grades 410, 420, and 440, also contain iron and have a martensitic structure, resulting in magnetic properties
08:26 PM Tom_L: pick one :)
08:27 PM Tom_L: looks like the 400 series are more magnetic than the 300 series
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol..
08:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Sure is shiny considering I think we have had it for many many years
08:38 PM lcnc-relay: <ta11u@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xTQ-6_7JnA
08:39 PM Tom_L: fancy
