12:23 AM roycroft: you can get heim joint ends for about the same price
12:40 AM roycroft: since you have to weld whatever ends to a piece of pipe anyway it doesn't matter
12:40 AM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9J9SGPX
01:56 AM Deejay: moin
03:08 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> can i add a new thread/subchannel for RIO here ? if yes, how ?
03:24 AM lcnc-relay: <kool7001@> meisterdippel@: I think turboss is one of the Admin maybe message him
03:47 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> i will wait, maybe tom can do this
04:20 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:20 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:43 AM Tom_L: morning
04:45 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
08:41 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> roycroft: that is the cheapest I have seen.. The 3pt top link is 1 inch pins and a lot bigger threads.
08:41 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (I am an over-do'er..)
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (class 2)
09:10 AM JT-Shop: roycroft, fridge still down and it's escalated to what I don't know
09:15 AM JT-Shop: and if I pay for the repair sears home service can be here today
09:19 AM JT-Shop: the moral of that story is don't buy LG
09:21 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> JT-Shop: Did they come by finally?
09:21 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It is really a crap shoot - we have LG washer/dryer that have been running for 15 years.. We had a LG dish washer that I fixed atleast 4 times after warrantee was up.
09:27 AM roycroft: wow - that really sucks
09:27 AM roycroft: so it's not a scheduling issue at all
09:27 AM roycroft: it's that they do not want to honor their warranty
09:28 AM * roycroft thinks it's time to contact the better business bureau
09:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> roycoft: did they actually move your cable?
09:43 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I remember you saying they showed up
09:44 AM roycroft: they removed it
09:44 AM roycroft: it was not in use
09:45 AM roycroft: so the air above my shop is now unobstructed
09:46 AM rdtsc-w: "unescalated" is more like it
09:46 AM rdtsc-w: congrats rc
09:52 AM JT-Shop: service has been no show, no call
09:52 AM rdtsc-w: we have a local TV station that likes to do "calls to action" occasionally, for things like this
09:53 AM JT-Shop: I have a kenmore 22 side by side that's been running for 38 years without any issues
09:54 AM JT-Shop: the next schedule is july 10... I'm not holding my breath
09:54 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ugh
09:55 AM rdtsc-w: I'd say give them the benefit of the doubt and *tell them* you're about to contact your local TV station... but honestly it sounds like they need to learn a lesson
09:56 AM JT-Shop: just got a real funny spam email Gnipsel Staff Performance Report
09:57 AM JT-Shop: those names in green qualify for a mid year bonus
10:05 AM rdtsc-w: The AI overlords have deemed you a worthy subject :)
10:07 AM JT-Shop: lol
10:27 AM JT-Shop: nap time then a trip to Sikeston to pick up the bridge jack
10:36 AM NetPipe: anyone want a job making wooden wide mouth ball mason jar lids for me on cnc ?
10:38 AM NetPipe: cannabis users need them and the ones on the market dont have threads on the lids
10:39 AM NetPipe: can pay like 10 CAD per lid
10:39 AM NetPipe: probably sell them for like 50 each
10:40 AM NetPipe: 30 a better price though
10:43 AM roycroft: why do cannabis users need wooden lids for mason jars?
10:44 AM NetPipe: for curing / storing their weed. glass is best but wood is second best
10:44 AM NetPipe: the ones on the market are plastic on the underside
10:45 AM NetPipe: 1.8 L mason jars are affordable and store alot
10:45 AM roycroft: what difference is there between wood and glass and plastic lids?
10:45 AM roycroft: wood would breathe a little
10:46 AM NetPipe: probably taste is the biggest thing
10:46 AM NetPipe: i wonder if cedar wood makes weed taste better even
10:47 AM roycroft: standard mason jar lids are two-pieces, with the part that's exposed to the inside of the jar enameled - it is inert, and would not affect taste at all
10:47 AM NetPipe: if it was painted on the outside of the lid the moisture woudl still stay in
10:47 AM NetPipe: oh those enameled lids really have a tin taste
10:47 AM NetPipe: better off getting the plastic lids
10:47 AM * roycroft is having a hard time buying that
10:48 AM NetPipe: yaman smell one
10:48 AM NetPipe: even empty jars smell like lids
10:48 AM roycroft: if wood actually does enhance the taste, rather than spending $50 on a wooden lid i'd be inclined to use the standard 2-piece lid and put a chunk of wood inside the jar
10:49 AM NetPipe: obviously you dont smoke enough weed
10:49 AM roycroft: a two piece lid insert is enameled, as i indicated before
10:49 AM roycroft: that enameling is essentialy inert
10:49 AM roycroft: unless you're filling the jar with something like hydrofluoric acid
10:50 AM roycroft: there is a rubber sealing ring, though, and i can imagine that that right might produce some off-flavors
10:50 AM roycroft: it seems the effect would be quite minor, though
10:50 AM roycroft: but i am by no means an expert on cannibis chemistry
10:51 AM roycroft: a 'tinny' flavor i can't imagine, however, as there is no metal exposed whatsoever
10:51 AM NetPipe: smoke is more important than wine sometimes to growers and buyers
10:51 AM roycroft: and to be clear, i'm not trying to be argumentive
10:51 AM roycroft: i'm genuinely trying to understand
10:52 AM roycroft: and if there is an actual market for $50 wooden mason jar lids i'll have to think about how much it would cost me to make them :)
10:53 AM NetPipe: 4 for 100 is a good deal
10:54 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: got my Netgate SG-1100 going yesterday. a difficult upgrade...
10:55 AM roycroft: what was the difficulty?
10:55 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> first tried the latest RC install. failed twice. finally did the latest stable release. got it going
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> now I gotta figure out all the subnet stuff..... and firewall rules
10:56 AM roycroft: at least you didn't brick it in the process
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> that woulda been bad
10:56 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> $$$$
10:57 AM roycroft: the networking part should't be too bad
10:57 AM roycroft: firewall rules can be tricky sometimes
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> runs pfSense
10:57 AM roycroft: my typical cisco process for updating firewall rules is this:
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> they have a pretty good forum too. pretty active
10:57 AM roycroft: write memory (save current config)
10:57 AM roycroft: reload in 5
10:57 AM roycroft: (do the scary stuff)
10:58 AM roycroft: and if i did not break stuff
10:58 AM roycroft: reload cancel
10:58 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I definitely do backups and save configs...
10:58 AM roycroft: that gives me five minutes to do what i need to do, and if i screw up, it automatically reboots with the saved config
10:58 AM roycroft: 99+% of the time i'm doing this work remotely
10:58 AM roycroft: truck rolls are expensive
10:59 AM roycroft: i love it when i have the luxury of sitting in front of the device i'm configuring
10:59 AM NetPipe: i could sell the lids as a 6 pack for a set of jars as 120 dollars, so i could start with 1000 dollar order and get 100 lids made
10:59 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: a good friend is moving to Newberg......
10:59 AM roycroft: that's an interesting town
11:00 AM roycroft: it's like an "urban farmer" town
11:00 AM roycroft: very close to portland, but with large properties and several vineyards
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> an old high school friend. now lives in Los Angeles
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> roycroft: hey are ya going to join Elon's new party ????
11:08 AM NetPipe: whats the website we use to buy everything wholesale for cnc stuff one that sells low cost lathes and stuff parts like threadrod and ballscrew
11:09 AM NetPipe: its like the us version of princess auto
11:11 AM NetPipe: sometimes buy small trailers and stuff there
11:12 AM roycroft: i hear he's going to be deported soon
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> lol
11:12 AM roycroft: and if he goes back to south africa, i probably won't join his white nationalist party
11:12 AM roycroft: seriously, dear leader has been talking about deporting him
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> i don
11:13 AM roycroft: i did not get my glue-up done yesterday
11:13 AM NetPipe: this channel has its own favorite hardware website right ?
11:13 AM roycroft: i want to put my brand on the front of the controller cabinet, and i
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> he has a legal citizenship. not sure if that can be pulled
11:13 AM roycroft: have been going back and forth about how i ant to do that
11:14 AM roycroft: it can, roguish - and revoking citizenship is a new big push for the doj
11:14 AM roycroft: they have a list of naturalized citizens that they want to deport
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> yeah
11:15 AM roycroft: birthright citizens cannot have their citizenship revoked, but naturalized ones can, when they commit heinous crimes
11:15 AM roycroft: such as not respecting dear leader's authoritay
11:15 AM roycroft: anyway, i was thinking about laser etching the brand, and i need to do that before assembly
11:15 AM NetPipe: they used to send out huge catalogs
11:16 AM roycroft: but i just decided to make it an applied brand, so i can go ahead and do the glue-up now
11:16 AM roycroft: which i'll try to do today
11:16 AM * roycroft is wanting to install electronics asap, and get the mini-router finally going
11:18 AM roycroft: hmm, i just now read that dear leader yesterday threatened to strip citizenship of some birthright citizens and deport them
11:18 AM roycroft: i really don't think that would pass muster
11:18 AM roycroft: but if they're already in south sudan or el salvador by the time a court rules on their case, it doesn't really matter if it's legal or not
11:21 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Elon has lots of attorney money
11:22 AM roycroft: he won't be deported
11:22 AM roycroft: he's moved to texas
11:23 AM roycroft: he'll just get texas to secede if a deportation action commences
11:24 AM NetPipe: neat i got a suggestion for using a regular lathe as a copier to make the lids
11:24 AM roycroft: the threads would be the challenge
11:24 AM roycroft: it's very difficult to cut clean threads in wood
11:24 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I would threadmill
11:25 AM roycroft: when you mentioned the project earlier one of my first thoughts was what the spoil rate would be on manufacturing
11:25 AM roycroft: that would mitigate the problem significantly, skunkworks8841
11:25 AM roycroft: but i should think it would still be a fairly low yield process
11:26 AM roycroft: unless there is very careful selection of premium wood
11:26 AM roycroft: it would have to be clear wood, and i'd probably go for hard maple
11:27 AM roycroft: any softwood would be really difficult to thread without a high spoil rate
11:28 AM roycroft: i don't think a lathe would be the proper machine for this at all
11:29 AM roycroft: sure, it is needed for making the blanks
11:29 AM xxcoder: you probably can do it the very old way
11:29 AM roycroft: but a cnc router would be much better suited for the actuall machining
11:29 AM roycroft: with a whittling knife?
11:29 AM xxcoder: cylinder with tool inside it
11:30 AM xxcoder: similiar to that screws of precision example
11:31 AM NetPipe: maple or hickory would be nice probably
11:31 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> cherry
11:31 AM roycroft: hickory would be harder to machine
11:32 AM roycroft: cherry is a lot softer than hard maple
11:32 AM roycroft: it would work but the threads would be more delicate, and i think the spoil rate would be higher
11:33 AM roycroft: i believe cherry experiences more seasonal movement than hard maple, but i'm not certain
11:34 AM roycroft: actually, i am wrong about that - seasonal movement of cherry is a bit less than hard maple
11:36 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I would agree.. I think dad made a spinning wheel out of cherry and it seems to change shape by a lot
11:36 AM roycroft: nope, i was wrong about being wrong
11:37 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> unless you get into making your own buildups (ply-ish-wood)
11:37 AM roycroft: the link to the chart i was looking at claimed it was a seasonal movement chart
11:37 AM roycroft: it was actually a hardness chart
11:37 AM roycroft: i found a real seasonal movement chart and hard maple moves less than cherry
11:37 AM xxcoder: thats odd error
11:38 AM roycroft: skunkworks8841: netpipe was talking about off-flavors produced by things
11:38 AM roycroft: including enameled lids, which i still cannot believe generate any detectable off flavors
11:39 AM roycroft: but if that's actually an issue, then plywood, or any glue- or resin-impregnated manufactured wood product would be unacceptable
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - I agree with you... there are a lot of wood lids to buy - but they usually have an threaded incert.
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> but - if you can sell something that people want - who cares why they want it 😉
11:40 AM roycroft: i don't judge
11:40 AM roycroft: but i do have to calculate the cost to manufacture if i want to sell the product
11:41 AM * JT-Shop just wants to sell all the stuff he doesn't use anymore
11:41 AM * roycroft wants to do that too
11:41 AM roycroft: i want to clear out one of the storage units
11:41 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: how ya going do that?
11:41 AM roycroft: a lot of the stuff is household stuff, and i'm going to have a big garage sale later this summer
11:42 AM xxcoder: I would, as minium, care about if stuff I sell would be dangerous to people or not. for example if I make something really radioactive for glow in dark effect
11:42 AM roycroft: i should probably do that before my shop roof build, both so i have more cash for the project, and because the property will be pretty full of big timbers when i do the roofing work
11:42 AM roycroft: well of course, xxcoder, it would need to be safe
11:43 AM roycroft: i'm not talking about people wanting scary, dangerous stuff
11:43 AM xxcoder: as safe as reasonable anyway. table saw is always going to be unsafe
11:43 AM roycroft: i'm talking about not judging goofy stuff
11:43 AM xxcoder: yeah.
11:43 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I have lots of stuff I just need to purge
11:45 AM JT-Shop: fb marketplace
11:45 AM NetPipe: aha found it www.mcmaster.com
11:45 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop:is that better than craigslist ?
11:46 AM JT-Shop: I'm not sure anymore
11:47 AM NetPipe: mcmaster has 5 axis lathe for 8k
11:47 AM NetPipe: cnc rather
11:54 AM Rab: NetPipe, got a link?
11:56 AM NetPipe: harbourfraight or something was actually what i was looking for
11:57 AM NetPipe: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/cnc-milling-machines/
11:57 AM roycroft: i just signed up for a fb account to sell stuff on fb marketplace
11:58 AM roycroft: so far i'm not at all impressed
11:58 AM JT-Shop: I just cross posted on cl
11:58 AM roycroft: i posted the welder that i have for sale, and so far i have heard from a bunch of tire kickers, lowballers, and downright rude people trying to dictate to me the price and terms of sale
11:59 AM Rab: lol @ McMaster's characteristic obscuring of the Pocket NC brand
12:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - you have to have a thick skin.. There was a guy looking at the ford tractor that kept telling me I would not get the minimum I was asking and that I should help out a poor farmer..
12:01 PM NetPipe: https://www.harborfreight.com/two-speed-variable-bench-mill-drill-machine-44991.html
12:01 PM roycroft: i have pretty thick skin when it comes to that kind of stuff
12:01 PM roycroft: that's not the issue
12:01 PM roycroft: i have plenty of skin, but not so much time
12:01 PM roycroft: and i don't like my time being wasted
12:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> right
12:02 PM Rab: Whenever I contact a CL seller I say, "I'm interested in your [item] at asking price". I imagine it's a huge relief to hear.
12:02 PM roycroft: yes, it is
12:02 PM roycroft: i can say as both a seller and a buyer that it's a relief for both not to have to do the dance
12:02 PM roycroft: i know some folks like the dance
12:03 PM roycroft: but my experience is that whenever i have to do the dance the dance partner rarely ends up going home with the product
12:04 PM roycroft: i even post "price firm" in my listings, but folks still think it's dance time and get huffy when i won't play along
12:08 PM xxcoder: lol when I was selling off my lego collection, one guy offered well below half the price
12:08 PM xxcoder: I told that person I am not going to sell to that person.
12:08 PM roycroft: i would like to sell this welder
12:08 PM roycroft: i rarely use it
12:08 PM roycroft: but i won't give it away
12:08 PM xxcoder: after few days later, "so what about that deal? I am willing to get it". well since I was pricing it to sell, I had sold it already, at price I asked for
12:09 PM roycroft: i'm not desperate for the money, and my concern about the real estate that it occupies is not great enough to justify selling it for less than what it's worth
12:09 PM JT-Shop: Rab, if you email mcmaster they will tell you the brand
12:09 PM xxcoder: "nah you offered way below I wanted, at my already way below actual value, I told you I won't sell to it. I have sold collection at my asking price"
12:09 PM NetPipe: https://www.vevor.ca/rotary-table-c_10128/compound-milling-machine-work-table-2-axis-cross-slide-bench-drill-vise-fixture-p_010230619047
12:09 PM xxcoder: *sell to you
12:10 PM Rab: JT-Shop, yeah, I have had good experiences when I've called them for more detail.
12:10 PM JT-Shop: fb marketplace you get a bunch of one click is it available
12:10 PM roycroft: yes, i got a ton of those, jt-shop
12:11 PM roycroft: i did not even mention them, because i figured everyone gets them, and the appropriate way to deal with them is to ignore them
12:11 PM JT-Shop: I put a big bold I don't respond to is it available and I don't reply
12:12 PM JT-Shop: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1441624533848479
12:12 PM roycroft: i should start responding "no, but i'll take your money anyway"
12:12 PM JT-Shop: that's a good one
12:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> so far I haven't had any scammers.. (going to send you more money to give the shipper style)
12:12 PM Rab: NetPipe, I'd have to be really hard up to buy or use one of those. Any used XY table you can find for 160.99CAD almost has to be better.
12:13 PM JT-Shop: delete & relist has been broken for me for quite some time and I don't know why
12:13 PM Rab: A friend bought the LittleMachineShop version, which should have at least a little bit of QC, but it was still pretty sad.
12:15 PM roycroft: i would look at grizzly for a rotary table
12:15 PM roycroft: "vevor.ca" is a lie
12:15 PM roycroft: vevor are in china
12:15 PM roycroft: one of the biggest brands from china, and they are a brand, not a manufacturer
12:15 PM roycroft: you'll get much better customer service from an outfit like grizzly than from vevor
12:16 PM roycroft: s/rotary table/x-y table/
12:17 PM Rab: Looks decent, although it could be at the other end of the country for all I know: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-tool-other/cambridge/milling-table/1718934059
12:19 PM Rab: This looks like a genuinely cool piece of hardware. Plus generous application of white lithium grease, and that sweet gantry: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-other-business-industrial/ottawa/nsk-xy-cnc-milling-table/1709889415
12:20 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Rab: check out these guys https://www.precisionmatthews.com/
12:21 PM roycroft: one of the things that drives me nuts is not removing bar code stickers from stuff, including lumber
12:21 PM roycroft: like, if you're going to build something, at least clean up your materials
12:22 PM roycroft: roguish: i'm hoping i can get a new metal lathe before too much longer, and i'm currently looking at a precision matthews model
12:22 PM NetPipe: the lids are only 3.5" so even the 100 dollar one thats 7x4" would work with a drill press
12:22 PM NetPipe: looks like it bolts to the table nice
12:22 PM NetPipe: retrofitting a drillpress wheel's probably easy
12:22 PM Rab: roguish, I know of them. My friend almost bought one of their mills. Standard Chinese stuff, but I think PM does in-house QC or at least works with their supplier. Seems like a cut above Grizzly.
12:23 PM NetPipe: wrap a cable around it after attaching plywood wheel
12:23 PM roycroft: iirc they are taiwanese, not chinese
12:23 PM roycroft: and yes, a cut above grizzly
12:23 PM Rab: Taiwanese castings?
12:23 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Rab: I have one. unfortunately its chinese, not tiawan
12:23 PM roycroft: grizzly also do in-house qc, btw
12:23 PM roycroft: pm are from china?
12:24 PM roycroft: that doesn't necessarily matter, other than the tariff issue
12:24 PM roycroft: good stuff is made in china
12:24 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> a lot of PM's is tiawanese. some is chinese
12:24 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> very different quality
12:24 PM roycroft: the reason we have so much crappy stuff from china is because importers order crappy stuff
12:24 PM roycroft: and china happily complies
12:25 PM roycroft: but the chinese definitely know how to make good stuff
12:25 PM roycroft: and how to charge for it accordingly
12:26 PM Rab: I think PM is similar to Shars in that it's generic OEM product which you see everywhere, but they work with their supplier for a certain quality tier and it's generally a good value for the money.
12:27 PM roycroft: i had a very negative experience with shars, so it's hard for me to be objective about them
12:27 PM Rab: I would throw Grizzly and Jet in there too, I don't like it very much but it's better and more predictable quality than Harbor Fright.
12:28 PM roycroft: but i generally agree with the rest of that statement
12:28 PM roycroft: in defense of harbor freight, while they still have a lot of crappy one-use and partial-use tools, they're becoming more upscale
12:28 PM roycroft: there are some pretty decent tools there now
12:29 PM roycroft: they all still look like cheap chinese knock-offs
12:29 PM roycroft: and they all still smell like china when you open the box, and sometimes for months after
12:29 PM Rab: I have not touched their power tools since a couple of experimental purchases way back.
12:29 PM roycroft: but there's som decent stuff there
12:29 PM Rab: "Bauer", "Predator"
12:30 PM Rab: We have a Predator gas posthole digger at work, almost took my finger off but it does work as designed.
12:30 PM roycroft: their winches, for example, are very good, and you will see them on lots of professional tow vehicles, but they are a fraction of the price of the big brands
12:31 PM roycroft: their roll-around toolboxes have really improved in quality as well
12:31 PM roycroft: and i'd rather spend $600 on a hf roll-around than $5k on a similar-size and spec snap-on
12:32 PM roycroft: but if i needed an open end wrench for a job and i did not have the right one and hf was my only option, i'd go there and get it, hoping it would last through the immediate job
12:33 PM roycroft: and expecting it not to last beyond that
12:33 PM xxcoder: yep. some is just super inflated price. I bought toolcart from costco and it cost me $660. and it was bigger than most people carts. the fancy brand was $800 for small toolcart
12:33 PM JT-Shop: I would go to menards before horrible freight
12:33 PM roycroft: sure
12:34 PM roycroft: the closest menard's is only about an 18 hour drive from here
12:34 PM roycroft: we have jerry's in eugene, though
12:34 PM roycroft: but they sell craftsman roll-arounds
12:34 PM roycroft: which are crap these days
12:34 PM roycroft: the hf ones are better than craftsman
12:36 PM roycroft: and i exaggerated
12:36 PM roycroft: the closest menard's is only 17-1/2 hours away, not 18 hours
12:36 PM roycroft: that makes it much more doable
12:38 PM NetPipe: https://www.amazon.com/Dremel-Cnc-Machine/s?k=Dremel+Cnc+Machine one of these could work with a special bit to do threads ? kinda like a disk shaped bit ?
12:38 PM NetPipe: then sanding after
12:39 PM roycroft: i'm perusing timber framing forums, since i'll be building a timber frame roof for my shop
12:39 PM roycroft: i ran into an odd thread
12:39 PM roycroft: a person was building a 10'x12' shed, and wanted to timber frame it
12:40 PM roycroft: he said he was planning on using 8x8 posts, and 8x10 tie beams
12:40 PM roycroft: and was wondering if he should install more supports in the middle
12:40 PM xxcoder: wow thats heavy duty
12:40 PM roycroft: yeah
12:40 PM roycroft: you could build a shed like that out of 2x2s and while it would not meet code and would not be super-solid, it would not fall down
12:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> my dad made a 40ft by 40ft pole shed using 4X4 oak lumber.. (he made trusses to span)
12:41 PM roycroft: my shop is 14x24
12:41 PM roycroft: and i'm looking at 6x10 tie beams (the 14' ones)
12:41 PM roycroft: i think that will probably be sufficient, but i won't know until i have a complete design
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> he used the dump truck and rone tower sections to set the trusses. (I was pretty young and don
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 't remember it)
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> rohn
12:42 PM roycroft: my construction will not be traditional at all, because i'll be doing most, if not all, the work myself
12:42 PM roycroft: so instead of constructing bents/trusses and hoisting them up, i'll be stick-building it
12:43 PM roycroft: even so, a 14' 6x10 is going to way a lot more than i can lift
12:43 PM roycroft: so i'll be doing some rigging to help get the big pieces up there
12:43 PM roycroft: weigh, rather
12:47 PM NetPipe: whats a thinner surfacing bit called ?
12:48 PM NetPipe: 2mm rotary cuts or so
12:58 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't really consider anything 2mm for 'surfacing'
01:02 PM Tom_L: there are flycutters and face mills
01:02 PM roycroft: it depends on what you are surfacing
01:03 PM roycroft: if you're surfacing a match box then 2mm might be fine :)
01:04 PM NetPipe: flutes
01:05 PM * roycroft is beginning to wonder if netpipe is a bad ai engine
01:06 PM Tom_L: picolo
01:22 PM NetPipe: my mistake flute is just regular drillbit
01:22 PM Tom_L: no
01:22 PM Tom_L: flute is a feature of many cutting tools
01:22 PM roycroft: with a 2mm surfacing cutter it had better be a picoloissimo
01:22 PM roycroft: maybe the mice are the pipers now?
01:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> NetPipe: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLY67-4BrEae9m8v20LNARIRl9Pd9bdFRZ
01:22 PM NetPipe: a slotter router bit
01:22 PM NetPipe: only 2mm wide ?
01:22 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Keyseat_cutter1.jpg
01:28 PM NetPipe: just bought one of these https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B08CXM2C7N
01:28 PM NetPipe: 3 payments of 60 bux
01:30 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> i have successfully made an API thread on the small lathe using only g76
01:31 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/970073761770512384/1390034223783477469/IMG-4635ba06b52f615118b063c1763f7faf-V.jpg?ex=6866c9c0&is=68657840&hm=eb7bc48d2bb006dd474ac5f629f6917934fb210fdc5565a6360fdf34c678ba41&
01:31 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> internal 2⅜
01:31 PM NetPipe: that look real good
01:33 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/970073761770512384/1390035002833637376/VID_20250702_112222_286.mp4?ex=6866ca7a&is=686578fa&hm=cec37d26dc88e508ebe492a339ebf7f55d712caecd948896773bde3c62b8681d&
01:33 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> this is the motion
01:37 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/168904469290024960/1390036008539652116/VID_20250702_112631_193.mp4?ex=6866cb6a&is=686579ea&hm=b54009ebdcfb9120318929e8fea31fc8b3e83d738696a1d76dc7dac5c3043187&
01:40 PM xxcoder: thats cool
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> im using exit taper
01:42 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Its kind of clunky but it works quite well
01:42 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> the problem is, i have to stop it mid cycle
01:43 PM NetPipe: looks fast too
01:43 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> i wish we had taper threading support with g76
01:43 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Ill look into the source code
01:43 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> my rapids are 30 000mm/min
01:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://sourceforge.net/p/emc/mailman/emc-developers/thread/57CB4DBB.1010107%40wallacecompany.com/#msg35333774
01:44 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> oh
01:44 PM Tom_L: hefty chunk -o- steel
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> its 42CrMo4 +Qt 36HRC
01:47 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Is there a post somewhere which would help me compile this myself? I would really like to use this code
01:47 PM Tom_L: is it written as a comp?
01:47 PM Tom_L: i've never compiled a comp
01:48 PM * Tom_L looks at skunkworks
01:48 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Im just not sure how i can incorporate it
01:53 PM * roycroft decides it's glue-up time
01:53 PM Tom_L: a far fetched idea... could you probe an X angular offset and cut a straight thread? it probably wouldn't turn out the same
01:53 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8hpXoHmHzk
01:53 PM Tom_L: what made me think of it
01:55 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> interesting
01:55 PM Tom_L: you'd sure wanna reset it afterward
01:57 PM Tom_L: i would imagine you have that option on a lathe same as a mill
01:57 PM Tom_L: or it could just be a dumb idea
01:58 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Im not familiar with angular offset
01:58 PM Tom_L: pull the flex examples and look at the tp3 probe routines
01:59 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Im quite happy with this g76 modification
01:59 PM Tom_L: that's all in the flex examples
01:59 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> But how can i try it out
01:59 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> I have never done such things
01:59 PM Tom_L: skunkworks could probably help with that
02:09 PM Tom_L: i used G10 L2 P0 R(angle) for that but looking, it rotates about the Z axis so it may not work on a lathe anyway
02:10 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/gcode/g-code.html#gcode:g10-l2
02:10 PM Tom_L: works great on a mill
02:11 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Yeah i need rotation on the Y axis
02:11 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> still seems kinda funky
02:11 PM Tom_L: might work for something like cutting a flat around a bar
02:12 PM Tom_L: (with live tooling)
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Im actually so happy with the workaround
02:13 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I don't know how you would do this.. I didn a quick search on github thinking there was a g76.cc but there isn't. So maybe there is inline code?
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> What is a .cc
02:14 PM Tom_L: c++\
02:14 PM Tom_L: c++
02:14 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Oh
02:14 PM Tom_L: afik
02:17 PM Tom_L: or rather c+
02:18 PM * Tom_L feels a good nap coming
02:23 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/hal/comp.html
02:25 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/man/man1/halcompile.1.html
02:25 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> ah
02:26 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> so i need to compile this as a component?
02:26 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> and it will override g76? huhhh
02:26 PM Tom_L: could be
02:26 PM Tom_L: i don't know
02:26 PM Tom_L: call it something special like G76a... ask skunkworks or andypugh
02:28 PM Tom_L: now for the nap...
02:29 PM lcnc-relay: <sodakaustik@> Enjoy your nap
02:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I don't think comp is going to work for interp code
02:45 PM JT-Mobile: Yo
02:47 PM roycroft: hi
02:47 PM * roycroft just finished doing his glue-up
02:50 PM JT-Mobile: What are you gluing
02:51 PM roycroft: the controller cabinet for my mini-router
02:51 PM JT-Mobile: Cool
02:51 PM roycroft: yes - i really want to get the electronics installed, so i can start figuring out how linuxcnc works :)
02:52 PM roycroft: i still have some edge treatments to do and apply finish to the outside of the cabinet once the glue is dry, but i'm getting pretty close to having that ready to go
03:19 PM JT-Mobile: Picked up the bridge jack finally
03:38 PM JT-Mobile: Heading back to the barn
06:21 PM JT-Shop: chicken is in the marinade
06:22 PM JT-Shop: ready to cook tomorrow
06:24 PM xxcoder: not too hot here, but not cool either. not sure what my meal plans is yet lol
06:24 PM JT-Shop: we had sammiches for tonight
06:26 PM JT-Shop: chicken is for Saturday as it's much better cold
06:28 PM xxcoder: nice
06:35 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> hey
06:35 PM xxcoder: hi
06:35 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> what board should i buy for 3 axis cnc?
06:35 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> 7I76EU?
06:35 PM xxcoder: jt youre up
06:36 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> or if i need encoder, 7i95T?
06:36 PM JT-Shop: depends on how much I/O you need a 7i96s might be all you need
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> 3 axis with 3 encoder
06:37 PM JT-Shop: and it depends on if you need analog or step/dir
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> + spindle + 3 home
06:37 PM JT-Shop: servo?
06:37 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> stepper
06:38 PM JT-Shop: what are the encoders for?
06:38 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> its on the rails
06:38 PM xxcoder: linear encoder?
06:38 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> yes
06:38 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> for the deadzone
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> my Z axis have .1 mm deadzone
06:39 PM JT-Shop: that gets very complicated then
06:39 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> why
06:40 PM JT-Shop: because steppers don't work like servos and you can't add more power to a stepper to make it keep up
06:40 PM JT-Shop: backlash is never easy to deal with with software as direction changes can cause very high acceleration
06:41 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> https://discord.com/channels/970073318357078036/970073761770512384/1390112553895723149
06:41 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i have this machine
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> its have mach3 at the moment
06:42 PM xxcoder: you will need to paste image url directly
06:42 PM JT-Shop: yup
06:42 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/970073761770512384/1390112553555722351/20250630_021323.jpg?ex=686712b3&is=6865c133&hm=3294fae28598585cbf8f011e6b894bf255b5b045ce615c3234364eb136e5e0d7&=&format=webp&width=726&height=968
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> ah, i see, this is a bridged channel
06:43 PM JT-Shop: that must have some hefty stepper motors
06:43 PM xxcoder: yeah :)
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> yes, but X-Y direct drive and Z 4:1
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i having issues with the steppers and i think its from mach3 what running from an 1998 pc
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> on 2006 made board with some missing components...
06:45 PM xxcoder: not surpised, mach3 is quite old
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> with PIC and firmware IO card
06:45 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i wanted to try LPT on Linuxcnc but i was idiot. Can't boot from USB. haha
06:46 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> there are too many options with Mesa cards.. so
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> 95t or 96s or 97t
06:47 PM xxcoder: yep. amazing isnt it. im far from expert on those though. jt is one
06:47 PM * JT-Shop is far from an expert on anything
06:48 PM JT-Shop: have you searched the forum for information?
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> yes but too much informations
06:48 PM JT-Shop: there is much more expertise there
06:48 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> and lot of people looks like dont understand what are they doing
06:49 PM JT-Shop: well new folks usually don't know what they are doing but there are some very experienced folks on there
06:50 PM JT-Shop: me, I know about the machines I converted/built which were all straight forward
06:50 PM xxcoder: everyone is new on something at some point :D
06:50 PM JT-Shop: open end steppers or servos with encoder feedback
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> pretty much 50$ difference between those. So if i buy the 'better'. Maybe good for later
06:51 PM JT-Shop: they are all better, it just depends on what you need
06:51 PM JT-Shop: disclaimer I'm a distributor for Mesa
06:51 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> no in EU?
06:52 PM JT-Shop: although some of the newer cards have better I/O
06:52 PM JT-Shop: EU?
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> europe
06:52 PM JT-Shop: ah there are at least one in EU... let me think of his name
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i found only one:)
06:52 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> in protugal
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> https://eusurplus.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_62_71
06:53 PM JT-Shop: https://store.mesanet.com/international-dealers
06:53 PM JT-Shop: ah yea eusruplus.com
06:54 PM JT-Shop: what country are you in?
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> hungary
06:55 PM JT-Shop: hmm don't see one there only germany and protugal
06:55 PM JT-Shop: portugal
06:55 PM JT-Shop: ukraine
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> german is like price x 1.5
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> there is war in ukraine, cant import anything
06:55 PM JT-Shop: Czech Republic
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> webshop gives 404
06:56 PM JT-Shop: anyway that link is a list of all international dealers
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> last update on that shop was 2009
06:56 PM JT-Shop: https://store.mesanet.com/international-dealers
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i seen, portugal and germany, others are dead
06:57 PM JT-Shop: quite possible they have gone away but mesa might have not updated that page
06:57 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> what card do you recommend for me?
06:58 PM JT-Shop: for step and direction 7i76eu, 7i95t, or 7i96s
06:59 PM JT-Shop: 7i76eu does have sink/source outputs and more than the 7i96s
06:59 PM JT-Shop: of course the 7i95t has encoder inputs
06:59 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> whats the different between 95t and 97t?
07:00 PM JT-Shop: 97 is analog
07:00 PM JT-Shop: for servos
07:00 PM JT-Shop: https://mesaus.com/
07:00 PM JT-Shop: a less complicated place to look at mesa cards as I only carry the ones that work with linuxcnc
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> 404
07:01 PM JT-Shop: must be blocked from your end
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> nice
07:01 PM JT-Shop: anyway it's been a long day for me so time to call it a day
07:02 PM JT-Shop: good luck
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> ty, i order 95t
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> https://www.mesaus.com/ loaded for me, after ages
07:02 PM JT-Shop: everything is loading slow for me here
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> I'm on 500mb symmetric
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> i see i can upgrade with 6 channel analog with 7i83
07:03 PM lcnc-relay: <.le_potato@> so if i switch to servos, i can do it
