12:33 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
02:08 AM Deejay: moin
04:35 AM Tom_L: morning
04:43 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
05:00 AM rifraf: morning Tom_L
05:01 AM rifraf: did you see  Velouria, a bit of diy cnc beauty, https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cSmjnmIA0Tc
05:45 AM JT-Cave: https://github.com/jethornton/mesact/issues/149
05:46 AM JT-Cave: I have no clue what that is
05:49 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> Geiger counter for radioactivity
05:49 AM rmu: somebody tries to connect to a geiger counter. funny thing is "please file an issue at ..:"
05:50 AM rmu: probably some sort of artificial stupidity hallucinating code involved somewhere
05:52 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Ackuethe%2Fgeigerlog%20mesact&type=code
05:52 AM rmu: https://github.com/ckuethe/geigerlog
05:52 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> someone has copied your code and not changed the url
05:52 AM rmu: :)
05:53 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> copy of this: https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Ajethornton%2Fmesact%20https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Fjethornton%2Fmesact%2Fissues&type=code
05:53 AM rmu: https://github.com/ckuethe/geigerlog/blame/b49d82ee83b3788d17c50776bf9fbf28a8d52f8f/ggeiger.py#L2444
05:58 AM rmu: seems there is no easy way to file an issue or contact author
06:00 AM rmu: i could fork and PR the file with the mesact url
06:03 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> the author was probably a bit contaminated when copying 😂 - think the sentence is funnier in german
06:35 AM JT-Cave: odd that my excepthook verbatim was copied
06:42 AM JT-Cave: but that's not the code in the sourceforge link
06:54 AM JT-Cave: https://github.com/ckuethe/geigerlog/pulls
08:23 AM JT-Cave: so actually my code is in https://sourceforge.net/projects/geigerlog
08:24 AM JT-Cave: does anyone have a sourceforge account so they can request that it be removed
08:35 AM rmu: i would just PR it on github and let the maintainer deal with sf
08:39 AM JT-Cave: I think the github is just a copy by someone else
08:39 AM JT-Cave: the maintainer seems to be ullix and the github is ckuethe
08:40 AM JT-Cave: so two different chaps
08:44 AM rdtsc-w: JT's code is popular :)
11:56 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
02:40 PM roycroft: more bizarre shaper head thinking
02:40 PM roycroft: a person needs to make some large, square things out of wood
02:41 PM roycroft: the question they had is if they use enough shaper tape, can they route a perfectly square, straight line over a distance with the origin
02:41 PM roycroft: the immediate responses were to use an accurate rule and do a 4-5-6 layout to get a square line, then cut to the line with a track saw
02:42 PM roycroft: or something very similar
02:42 PM roycroft: but the person seems to think that he needs to use the shaper origin because he has it and it's "more accurate"
02:44 PM roycroft: it's kind of like saying "i need to drill a hole. i have a really nice, titanium damascus hammer that cost me $400, and i have a ratty old drilling machine from harbor freight. The hammer is a much nicer tool, so how do i drill a hole with my fancy hammer?"
02:47 PM xxcoder: fancy
02:47 PM xxcoder: yeah dunno why would need shaper for just square wood
02:47 PM roycroft: it's pervasive mentality there - i have an origin, i love my origin, and i want to find a way to use it for everything i do
02:48 PM roycroft: my attitude is that i have an origin, i love my origin, and i use it whenever it makes sense to use it
02:48 PM roycroft: i'm still figuring out when it makes sense and when it doesn't
02:49 PM roycroft: but i would definitely use a track saw to cut a straight line
02:49 PM roycroft: in fact, there was just a shaper session that discussed cutting grooves for drawer bottoms with the origin
02:50 PM roycroft: i just had to do that, and i used a manual router with an edge guide, because that was a lot easier
02:53 PM xxcoder: yeah whatever makes best sense
02:53 PM xxcoder: big cnc setup to cut groove wouldnt make sense, as programming and test would take more time than few drawers manually cut
02:53 PM xxcoder: un;ess its like 100 drawers
02:54 PM roycroft: that's part of what i'm figuring out
02:54 PM roycroft: how long it takes to set up the origin to do a job
02:55 PM roycroft: whether that takes more time than setting up for a manual cut with a saw or a router or whatever
04:17 PM Unterhausen: If all I had was a shaper origin, I would save my pennies and buy a track saw
04:20 PM xxcoder: you can always use a strip of wood or something to act as track
04:26 PM Unterhausen: Shaper might be better than that
04:26 PM Unterhausen: someone is running some equipment that is making our house resonate
04:27 PM Unterhausen: lucky for our dog, because it was annoying enough I took him to the park for a walk
04:33 PM rdtsc-w: Nikolai Tesla Earthquake machine? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla's_oscillator
04:35 PM Unterhausen: I wonder if I have an fft app on my phone
04:39 PM Unterhausen: 35hz
04:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yeck - wonder what that is
04:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> is it consistant?
04:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we had some road work being done a few months ago - they were using a wood chipper and that took a bit to figure out what the vibration was coming from
04:44 PM roycroft: how far are you from the nearest fracking zone?
04:44 PM * roycroft wonders if unterhausen's water is going to change color and smell funny soon
04:44 PM Unterhausen: they don't frack too close to here
04:45 PM roycroft: if i needed to cut a straight line and i did not have a track saw i'd cut it as close as i could with a hand saw and use a plane to make it straight and smooth
04:45 PM roycroft: if i did not have a hand saw or a plane would not have bought a shaper origin - i would have purchased a hand saw and a plane first
04:47 PM Unterhausen: I had a full shop before track saws really gained widespread use.
04:47 PM Unterhausen: would be nice to have one
04:48 PM roycroft: same here
04:48 PM roycroft: but i have one now
04:48 PM roycroft: i sure could have used one back in the '80s, when i was building cabinets for a living
04:48 PM JT-Shop: I keep thinking about a longer track but so far the 5' track seems to be all I need
04:48 PM roycroft: i was younger and stronger then, though
04:48 PM roycroft: i could lift a full sheet of mdf up onto the table saw without making old man noises
04:49 PM roycroft: i have a 2700mm track
04:49 PM JT-Shop: I forget how many mm my track is
04:49 PM roycroft: i wanted a 3000mm, and that would really help, but it was $100 more than the 2700
04:49 PM roycroft: if it's a festool it's probably 1400
04:50 PM Unterhausen: They paved a road near my basement lab a while back. The shakers on the asphalt rollers were about this same frequency
04:50 PM roycroft: the 2700 is barely big enough to cut a full sheet lenghtwise
04:50 PM Unterhausen: but they moved
04:50 PM roycroft: as in entry and exit would be a bit sketchy if i were not careful
04:51 PM roycroft: that extra 300mm would really help a lot, but not $100 more, imo
04:51 PM Unterhausen: someone was giving away a nice sheet of mdf recently, but I'm too old to wrangle it
04:52 PM roycroft: my new shop roof is going to be interesting to build, as i don't have and can't afford a helper
04:52 PM roycroft: it's going to be a timber frame design, and the math is looking like i'll need 8x10 tie beams, 14' long
04:52 PM roycroft: the wood will be green douglas fir
04:52 PM roycroft: those suckers are going to be heavy
04:53 PM JT-Shop: I built a crane for my scaffold using a boat winch
04:53 PM * roycroft will use "technology" to assist
04:53 PM roycroft: i have an electric winch that should handle the weight just fine, but i'll need to get creative when mounting it
04:54 PM JT-Shop: I used the crane to lift the trusses for the machine shop by myself
04:54 PM roycroft: my current thinking is that i won't demo the entire existing roof at the same time
04:55 PM roycroft: the shop is 24' long, and the structure will be made of 8' bents, so i can do 1/3 of the roof at a time
04:55 PM roycroft: build the end bay, then go in 8' and build an interior bay
04:55 PM roycroft: tear off another 1/3 roof, build another bay
04:55 PM roycroft: etc.
04:56 PM roycroft: if i do that i can mount the winch on either the existing or the new roof
04:56 PM JT-Shop: it would look funny during the transition
04:56 PM roycroft: or something like that - i'll figure it out
04:56 PM roycroft: the bigger problem is not that
04:56 PM roycroft: it's that my shop is full of tools and machines and stuff, and i have nowhere to move all of that during the rebuild
04:57 PM roycroft: i can move things out of the way as needed, but i'm essentially going to have to do the entire job with a full shop
04:57 PM roycroft: i have ways of mitigating that as well
04:57 PM xxcoder: oh talking about roof, have that wire traveled a bit yet?
05:07 PM roycroft: it's gone
05:07 PM roycroft: one less thing to worry about
05:07 PM xxcoder: completely removed? not replaced with longer wire and route off your land?
05:08 PM roycroft: completely removed
05:08 PM xxcoder: interesting
05:08 PM roycroft: the neighbors do not have service with centurylink
05:08 PM roycroft: so they just cut it off at their house and at the pole
05:08 PM xxcoder: I guess it was just remaining leftover from service days
05:09 PM roycroft: so now there's a long bridge tap hanging in the air
05:09 PM roycroft: but it's not my problem
05:09 PM roycroft: it's not even in my easement
05:09 PM xxcoder: yeah its not hanging over your roof so yeah
05:09 PM roycroft: right
05:09 PM roycroft: that's all i care about
05:10 PM xxcoder: indeed
05:13 PM JT-Shop: https://www.ozarksfirst.com/news/lance-shockley-execution-scheduled-2025/
05:16 PM roycroft: capital punishment is barbaric
05:17 PM JT-Shop: he ambushed and murdered a state trooper investigating a hit and run that resulted in a death
05:17 PM roycroft: that is a heinous crime
05:17 PM roycroft: but it does not make capital punishment not barbaric
05:17 PM Tom_L: just
05:18 PM JT-Shop: ambushing and murdering is pretty barbaric
05:19 PM roycroft: i would not disagree with that
05:21 PM xxcoder: ignoring all moral stuff, jailing a person for life is much cheaper than execution. and always will, as long as there is chances to appeal and find evidence of not being quilty.
05:24 PM JT-Shop: interesting that most of the cost is legal costs for execution so the lawyers profit from it
05:25 PM xxcoder: lawyers win even when they lose. so not surpised.,
05:25 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:26 PM xxcoder: that said, I will always support lifetime jail since that leaves open possibility of discovery of evidence that releases them. you cannot release a person from death.
05:27 PM xxcoder: I remember that case where case was open and shut and guy was jailed for years. turns out lot of stuff was a lie and it was pure injustice on that guy being jailed. if he was killed, it would be irreversable.
05:27 PM xxcoder: that said, his life was ruined anyway, being released after 20 years
05:27 PM JT-Shop: yup the Hurricane was railroaded by lies but he finally got out
05:31 PM JT-Shop: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubin_Carter
05:31 PM xxcoder: that may be the case I was remembering. I couldnt recall more specific details
05:31 PM xxcoder: thanks
05:48 PM JT-Shop: geomapappy seems to have a lot of issues every day
05:48 PM JT-Shop: I suspect the code is a bit cornfusing
05:55 PM Tom_L: what now?
05:56 PM JT-Shop: I don't pay much attention to what, it just seems like there are multiple issued every day on the mailing list
05:56 PM Tom_L: oh
05:56 PM Tom_L: i hardly ever go there
05:57 PM JT-Shop: I get them in my in box for some reason
06:31 PM roycroft: *whew*
06:31 PM roycroft: 37 degrees outside - body temperature for most folks, and slightly above my normal body temperature
06:32 PM roycroft: i just had to do some repairs to my gtaw welder, in preperation for selling it, and it is in my portable garage, which is not climate controlled in any way
06:33 PM roycroft: at least the humidity is only 30%
