02:55 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
10:53 AM roycroft: aah, the hypervisor is reracked and all the vms are happy
10:53 AM roycroft: and it's friday
10:53 AM roycroft: and it's concert night
10:53 AM roycroft: all that makes for a great day
11:16 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> what concert?
11:17 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> water still seeping into the basement. must have saturated the ground
11:17 AM roycroft: i'm going to see lyle lovett and his large band
11:19 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> neat!
11:19 AM roycroft: yeah
11:19 AM roycroft: i've never seen him, and he's on my list
11:19 AM roycroft: and he's about my age, so my rule to see anyone on the list who is 60 or older no matter what applies
11:27 AM roycroft: grrr
11:28 AM roycroft: even though foxnews.com is mostly fake news, i think it's important to visit it periodically to experience another perspective on things
11:28 AM roycroft: it really sucks that it drives the load up to ~500 on my computers whenever i attempt to do so

02:53 PM Guest14: hi friends
02:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +o by ChanServ
02:59 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to -o by ChanServ
03:27 PM JT-Shop: hmm I'm missing two saw horses...
03:27 PM xxcoder: maybe its out in field?
03:28 PM JT-Shop: maybe they wanted more company so they are hanging with the deer...
03:30 PM roycroft: maybe my old neighbors visited your place
03:30 PM roycroft: or maybe the ground buckled from the heat and shot them up into the air
03:30 PM JT-Shop: that would be a miracle
03:30 PM JT-Shop: hmm I should go look in the trees to see if they flew home
03:39 PM roycroft: i just saw an ad that said "you can run your appliances for days with this"
03:39 PM roycroft: the picture in the ad was a 500w jackery
03:39 PM roycroft: i have one of those
03:39 PM roycroft: i can charge my cell phone a couple dozen times with it
03:40 PM roycroft: if it powers my refrigerator at all (it might not even try), i expect it would last 20 minutes at most
03:42 PM roycroft: do people have appliances that are an order of magnitude more efficient than any of mine?
03:48 PM JT-Shop: if it sounds too good to be true...
04:03 PM * JT-Shop considers getting a mini split for the shops and garage
04:04 PM JT-Shop: there are so many to choose from it's pretty overwhelming
04:06 PM roycroft: i am definitely going to get one for the shop
04:07 PM roycroft: i'm not sure when, but sooner is better than later
04:07 PM JT-Shop: from what I've read only a few manufacturers make them and they are just branded
04:07 PM roycroft: that makes sense
04:08 PM xxcoder: some of those is just riciously overpriced
04:08 PM roycroft: what the hvac guy i talked to recently told me to look for is one where both the indoor and outdoor unit can have their coolant lines closed
04:08 PM JT-Shop: interesting
04:08 PM roycroft: most of them come pre-charged, with a vacuum in the indoor unit
04:09 PM roycroft: once you hook up the coolant lines the seals are broken and the coolant flows
04:09 PM JT-Shop: you still need to pull a vacuum on the lineset and most say you need to purge with dry nitrogen then pull a vacuum
04:09 PM roycroft: but if you need to service them you have to have an hvac person come out and remove the coolant before opening the lines, as the only valves are on the outdoor unit
04:09 PM JT-Shop: to remove any moisture in the lineset
04:10 PM xxcoder: some kits, hoses is also prevharged with coolant
04:10 PM xxcoder: so all you would need to is plug it in and break seal.
04:10 PM roycroft: i'm a bit dubious about anything an hvac person ever says to me, other than when they say "if we install this for you you will be paying us to service it multiple times/year"
04:11 PM roycroft: but they are never that honest
04:11 PM xxcoder: those "easy to install" kit
04:11 PM roycroft: yes, xxcoder
04:11 PM roycroft: the self-install ones do not need an hvac professional to hook up the lines
04:11 PM JT-Shop: yup when they (hvac people) say only a licensed hvac person should install them
04:11 PM roycroft: you can do it once by yourself
04:13 PM roycroft: we had a couple units once that leaked constantly (condensate)
04:14 PM roycroft: the hvac company blamed it on the false wall between our machine room and the outside
04:14 PM roycroft: they said that the drain lines tend to droop and then they back up
04:14 PM roycroft: we paid thousands of dollars for service calls, and eventually for some drain pumps that never worked right
04:15 PM roycroft: we finally fired them and hired a new outfit who gave us the same story
04:15 PM roycroft: they really wanted a service contract from us though
04:15 PM roycroft: so i talked to the owner and told him i wanted them to remove the plastic drain lines and replace them with rigid copper lines that were sloped properly, and supported inside the false wall
04:16 PM roycroft: he said he had never heard of doing that, and that everyone used plastic drain lines
04:16 PM roycroft: we made him do the copper lines anyway, and they never backed up/leaked again
04:16 PM Tom_itx: cheaper in the end
04:16 PM roycroft: the guy was not an idiot
04:16 PM roycroft: and it was not a strange concept
04:17 PM roycroft: but hvac people do not like fixing problems properly
04:17 PM Tom_itx: job security
04:17 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
04:17 PM roycroft: they like putting band-aids on that last about 3 months, so they can bill for more work
04:17 PM roycroft: yes
04:17 PM Tom_L: i stood over a plumber helping my niece with a drain problem until he fixed it right
04:18 PM Tom_L: it was a crappy way to plum it from the get go anyway
04:19 PM JT-Shop: I'm lucky to know a good hvac guy
04:19 PM Tom_L: it had a 2" line going into a 4" line with no cleanout past the 2"
04:19 PM Tom_L: so you could never get it cleaned out
04:20 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, yeah, my kid knows a few
04:20 PM JT-Shop: I bet he does
04:21 PM Tom_L: a few of them do side work
04:21 PM JT-Shop: I know one guy that does side work
04:22 PM Tom_L: last time i changed the unit i was able to get wholesale
04:24 PM Tom_L: it still worked but the coils were getting pretty coroded on the outside unit
04:30 PM JT-Shop: when I got a new central system the hvac guy had a trailer full of air handlers that had a tiny scratch so they were like 2/3 cost
04:31 PM Tom_L: i got my last frig that way
04:31 PM Tom_L: it had been in a model home
04:32 PM Tom_L: still had all the taped drawers etc so i knew it hadn't been used
04:33 PM roycroft: all my hypervisor upgrades are done now
04:33 PM roycroft: i took the safe path and moved all the vms off each machine before upgrading it, then moving them back after the upgrade
04:33 PM roycroft: it took way longer, but i did not want to lose anything
04:34 PM * JT-Shop got all the red iron chopped up for the scrapper
04:34 PM JT-Shop: all metric tubing as it was the shipping container for a Phillips medical thing
04:58 PM roycroft: i put my gtaw welder on the cart in preparation for selling it and found that the receptacle for the water cooler is broken, so i had to order some of those
04:58 PM roycroft: another delay in the sal
04:58 PM roycroft: e
04:58 PM roycroft: but i haven't found the torch or electrodes yet anyway
04:59 PM roycroft: as those things so often go, it was cheaper to buy 8 of them with free shipping than to buy one and pay for shipping
05:13 PM JT-Shop: I've been having issues with fb marketplace delete and relist seems to do nothing
05:21 PM roycroft: do you get good responses from there?
05:21 PM roycroft: it seems folks aren't using cl much any more, other than scammers
05:21 PM roycroft: i might break down and get a fb account just for marketplace
05:25 PM xxcoder: just make up every thing, eric croft
05:25 PM JT-Shop: better than craigslist
05:30 PM JT-Shop: I might try and list some things on craigslist
05:35 PM JT-Shop: I see a lot of lathes on cl maybe I can sell my CHNC
05:37 PM JT-Shop: hmm we might get some rain in the next few days
05:54 PM * roycroft heads off to town
07:29 PM _unreal_: good lord I had troubles connecting
07:30 PM _unreal_: cant wait to get the last of my stuff out of one of the storage units. so i can close it. then get regular intnernet instead of my phone's hot spot
07:30 PM NetPipe: https://github.com/netpipe/qtIRCBot
07:30 PM NetPipe: might help if you need one
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> water is finally slowing down - I think
07:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no rain today... I think there was water quite a ways up the basement walls..
07:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 2 dehumidifires running
