01:00 AM Deejay: moin
01:49 AM lcnc-relay: <z3rni3@> Morning.
01:49 AM lcnc-relay: Could you guys help me with a very easy question.
01:49 AM lcnc-relay: Im Setting up a small CNC XYZ machine and have set my physical Endstops so that Home should be in the top, left, back Corner.
01:49 AM lcnc-relay: But my virtual Machine has the Home in the top, left, Front corner.
01:49 AM lcnc-relay: ... long message truncated: https://jauriarts.org/_heisenbridge/media/jauriarts.org/OgGgTehWukpUYjLFldcsPVSN/_FnuSHABpAU (6 lines)
04:36 AM Tom_L: morning
04:39 AM Tom_L: z3rni3 try changing the sign of the scale on Y on the sim
10:34 AM roycroft: hi folks
10:35 AM roycroft: it's friday!
10:35 AM * roycroft is about to begin his second weekend of not moving
10:35 AM bjorkintosh: roycroft: how's recovery too?
10:35 AM roycroft: the vertigo is not completely gone, but better
10:35 AM roycroft: my back is feeling fine
10:36 AM roycroft: i'm not 100% yet, but doing rather well, all things considered
10:47 AM roycroft: i have figured out my issue with affinity designer
10:48 AM roycroft: at first it almost made my brain explode, but now i can kind of see why they did it the way they did, although they could have come up with a better method
10:48 AM roycroft: it's their shape builder tool
10:48 AM roycroft: i have to first of all select the objects i want to apply the tool to
10:48 AM roycroft: then i have to select the tool
10:49 AM roycroft: then i have to go back and select the elements of the objects that i want the tool to manipulate
10:49 AM roycroft: then select the action - add or subtract
10:49 AM roycroft: what was getting me was having to select stuff twice
10:49 AM bjorkintosh: it's a UI problem.
10:49 AM roycroft: yes
10:49 AM roycroft: they could eliminate the first step and it would still be fine
10:50 AM roycroft: select tool, select elements, select action
10:50 AM roycroft: that seems like it would work just fine - i see no reason to have to select objects before selecting the tool
10:51 AM roycroft: i spent a lot of time last night getting that sorted, and i just now tested by building a shape that did not work yesterday, exporting it to svg, and loading it onto the shaper origin
10:51 AM roycroft: it works as expected now
11:50 AM xxcoder: roy wow that is weird steps
12:05 PM roycroft: it is
12:05 PM roycroft: i don't feel bad that it took me a long time to figure it out
12:12 PM xxcoder: the first selection process sounds completely pointless, since you have to redo after select tool
12:13 PM roycroft: yes
12:14 PM xxcoder: of oits matter of "enabling" objects, then just have list to add objects as person adds elements on objects
02:18 PM roycroft: time to cut a test panel, assuming that the shapebuilder tool still works as it has been
02:52 PM roycroft: when all the components go in with a slight press fit, i'd say the cutouts are pretty good
02:53 PM xxcoder: nic
02:53 PM roycroft: i might add 0.003" for the actual part
02:53 PM xxcoder: e
02:53 PM roycroft: just because the wood is harder and thicker
02:53 PM roycroft: i can do that on-tool
02:53 PM roycroft: so i don't have to modify the drawings at all
03:22 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
03:23 PM Unterhausen: I just wasted longer than I want to admit on getting a replacement for my recalled Anker charger
03:23 PM Unterhausen: Also, the rain showed up a day early
04:05 PM roycroft: we have rain in the forcast for saturday
04:05 PM roycroft: light sprinkles
04:05 PM roycroft: i'd be fine with that
04:07 PM Tom_L: glad you're getting things worked out
04:09 PM Guest61: Hi, I’m trying to get. Gryphon router controlled by a Dahlgreen box to run. It’s been abandoned and I know little about CNC software. If I purchase a Linux computer and run Linux CNC, do you think this might run?
04:10 PM Guest61: Presently Engravelab on a windows 7 pc. 15 years old
04:10 PM Tom_L: dunno what a Dahlgreen box is
04:11 PM roycroft: you might need to purchase some hardware for the controller, depending on what you have
04:11 PM * roycroft has no idea what a dahlgreen box is either
04:11 PM Guest61: maybe you can suggest a forum to help me out.you guys uk or usa
04:12 PM roycroft: yes
04:12 PM Tom_L: there are always options it's just a matter of how extensive
04:12 PM roycroft: and other parts of the world as well
04:12 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/
04:12 PM Tom_L: there's our forum
04:13 PM Guest61: Apologies roycroft.
04:13 PM roycroft: for what?
04:13 PM roycroft: you did nothing wrong or said nothing wrong
04:13 PM Tom_L: likely if you found out more about the interface we can help you better
04:13 PM Guest61: ill get on to the forum with some real detail. The machine is in the local school
04:14 PM Guest61: what detail would you need apart from the name on the control box?
04:14 PM Tom_L: there is generally a way to do it
04:14 PM Tom_L: how the interface works like step/direction or analog etc
04:14 PM Tom_L: you need to do a bit more research
04:14 PM Guest61: oh Tom, I wish I had your expertise! More a mechanical guy me
04:15 PM roycroft: a brief perusal of the internet suggests that the dahlgreen controllers were for small engraving machines
04:15 PM Tom_L: does it have steppers or servos
04:16 PM Tom_L: are the drivers there for the stepper/servo motors
04:16 PM Tom_L: for XYZ
04:17 PM Tom_L: it just depends how much of the current hardware you can use
04:17 PM roycroft: yes, a hardware inventory would be useful
04:17 PM roycroft: identify the spindle, and the motors, then get into the controller and identify the drivers and the interface board to the pc
04:18 PM Tom_L: This machine is driven over serial port using HPGL
04:18 PM Tom_L: https://www.reddit.com/r/CNC/comments/381bgq/need_help_with_dahlgren_engraver/
04:18 PM Guest61: https://www.ronamachines.co.uk/listings/4917846-used-suregrave-2516-with-dsc-controller
04:18 PM roycroft: i suspect a mesa board may be in order here
04:18 PM Tom_L: o
04:19 PM Tom_L: i'd suspect you may need stepper drivers as well
04:19 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure those are steppers though
04:19 PM roycroft: i'm converting a small machine about that size to linuxcnc right now
04:20 PM Guest61: See when you start suggesting stuff like motors and stuff, is the cheapest option to just chuck it and buy more modern?
04:20 PM roycroft: we have pretty much zero information right now
04:20 PM Tom_L: depends what their salvage price is
04:20 PM roycroft: so there are no options as of yet
04:20 PM Tom_L: we're just tossing ideas out for you to follow up on
04:21 PM roycroft: what hardware do you have? what is the intended use of the machine? you mentioned it's at a school. is the goal to teach kids what cnc is all about, or just to make parts, or what?
04:21 PM Guest61: I’ll get back to you, my apologies for lack of detail. Vodka and the internet is never a good idea! Hic!
04:21 PM JT-Shop: lol
04:21 PM roycroft: you're right
04:21 PM Tom_L: vodka helps
04:22 PM roycroft: whisky and the internet is a much better combination
04:22 PM Tom_L: or wine if you ask JT
04:22 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:22 PM JT-Shop: or Cognac in the winter
04:23 PM Guest61: It’s worse if you add eBay, or Craigslist!
04:23 PM Tom_L: craigslist you're getting someone else's problem
04:23 PM Guest61: Now cognac, now you’re talking………….. cigar? Goodnight people. Thankyou
04:23 PM JT-Shop: say goodnight Gracie
04:24 PM xxcoder: hope that guy is successful on project
04:25 PM JT-Shop: I haven't looked on craigslist in a few years
04:25 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure i ever have
04:25 PM roycroft: an hpgl interface could be interesting
04:25 PM Tom_L: like a pen plotter
04:25 PM xxcoder: can sometimes find good deal, but full of resales from china nowdays
04:25 PM roycroft: one could do a design in autocad, and plot it to the engraver
04:25 PM Tom_L: HP had one iirc
04:25 PM JT-Shop: you used to be able to find a lot of stuff and sell a lot of stuff on craigslist
04:26 PM roycroft: i still use cl
04:26 PM roycroft: i know folks have mostly shifted to facebook marketplace now, but i'm still holding out and having nothing to do with facebook
04:26 PM roycroft: there's an opportunity cost for my stubbornness, i know
04:26 PM roycroft: but one i've so far been willing to pay
04:26 PM Tom_L: doesn't google have one too?
04:27 PM Tom_L: no clue here
04:27 PM roycroft: i have no idea
04:27 PM roycroft: but that would be even worse than facebook
04:27 PM JT-Shop: when stuff stopped selling on CL I quit using them
04:27 PM * roycroft still is able to buy and sell on cl
04:27 PM xxcoder: google shop search really sucks lol. dunno if they have commnty market type ite
04:27 PM xxcoder: facebook meh. full of china stuff resellers
04:28 PM JT-Shop: I think if CL works in your location you're lucky to have that
04:28 PM xxcoder: I sorta have it. seattle one
04:29 PM roycroft: i haven't really used it since i moved
04:29 PM roycroft: when i start listing stuff for sale again i'm going to have to mention that i travel to eugene regularly
04:29 PM roycroft: most folks won't want to drive up here to buy something
04:29 PM roycroft: they think i'm on the other side of the country or something
05:08 PM xxcoder: interesting cardboard stuff https://youtu.be/45JhacvmXV8
05:08 PM xxcoder: treatment to make it almost wood-like
05:11 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> xxcoder: lots and lots of glue?
05:12 PM xxcoder: very cheap glue
05:12 PM xxcoder: he made his own glue
05:13 PM roycroft: i'm done with work for the weekend
05:13 PM roycroft: and i have modified my drawing for the front panel - time to make some cutouts (another test board before the real thing)
05:14 PM roycroft: this time it will be full thickness, so i'll be doing the 2-sided thing, and hoping it aligns well enough
05:25 PM Guest84: has 32-bit support been added?
05:26 PM JT-Shop: added to?
05:26 PM Guest84: rtai for buster
05:26 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, knows about rtai
05:27 PM Guest84: he's not here
05:28 PM JT-Shop: I only know debian by the numbers and not the silly names...
05:28 PM Tom_L: https://onelaboratories.us/abc/
05:28 PM Guest84: i dont remember its from 2021
05:28 PM Tom_L: the latest RTAI build
05:29 PM Tom_L: somewhat experimental
05:29 PM Tom_L: but i've been running it a while
05:29 PM Guest84: tom, does the programneed support of rtai incode?
05:29 PM Tom_L: afik it's 64bit
05:29 PM Tom_L: and that build includes debian 12 with linuxcnc
05:30 PM Tom_L: there IS an order of installation
05:30 PM Guest84: i need both 64 and 32
05:30 PM Tom_L: i don't know of any 32bit rtai except wheezy
05:30 PM Tom_L: buster was skipped for all practical purposes
05:31 PM Tom_L: err no, bullseye was skipped
05:31 PM Tom_L: buster was 10
05:31 PM Guest84: ineed to run both 32 and 64 apps
05:31 PM Tom_L: https://www.debian.org/releases/
05:32 PM Tom_L: not sure that's possible nowdays
05:32 PM Guest84: i use devuan
05:32 PM Tom_L: unless you use an ancient version
05:32 PM Guest84: it was parallel withbuster installed in 202@
05:32 PM Guest84: 2022
05:32 PM JT-Shop: I use ubuntu 10.04 on the CHNC with no issues
05:33 PM Tom_L: we are of ancient decent
05:33 PM JT-Shop: the VMC has a 386...
05:33 PM Guest84: i asked one year ago here, they told to ask oneguy who compiled herebut he did not appear again here
05:34 PM Tom_L: ntulinux built the last few RTAI
05:34 PM JT-Shop: memleak?
05:34 PM Tom_L: same guy
05:34 PM Guest84: so ihad to uninstall cnc because it was purely 64bit. i wanted to test it for audio vs usual preempt
05:35 PM Guest84: maybehe, don't remember
05:35 PM Guest84: yes seems he
05:35 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/40454-debian-buster-installation-with-32-bit-rtai-source
05:35 PM Tom_L: old post
05:36 PM Tom_L: dinner
05:39 PM Guest84: so what should i do?
05:41 PM Tom_L: do you have to run linuxcnc on the 32bit pc?
05:42 PM Tom_L: run the 32 bit app on that and linuxcnc on 64 bit
05:42 PM Guest84: no,ihave 64bit devuan installed
05:43 PM Guest84: but winehq 32bit requeirs support of 32bit too,it's calledmultilib
05:46 PM JT-Shop: sometimes one has to give up windblows for a cnc machine
05:46 PM Guest84: good old audio plugins are all 32bit and i need support for that. last time i just intalled some deb which installed linuxcnx and rtai automatically. i wanted the debtobe compilied by someome with 32-bit support too, i mean to be both 64 and 32 bit at once
05:47 PM JT-Shop: audio plugins have nothing to do with machining...
05:47 PM Guest84: but no one compiled that's why i waited for several months to ask here agaiin
05:47 PM Tom_L: https://github.com/NTULINUX/
05:48 PM Tom_L: it's very possible that is oneguy
05:49 PM Tom_L: he's also developed gentoo installs
05:50 PM Tom_L: sounds like a DIY project
05:51 PM Guest84: but i don't have gentoo installed though i used it about 10years ago
05:51 PM Tom_L: well you _are_ looking for 10yr old software
05:52 PM Guest84: not actually, i may upgrade devuan if needed
05:52 PM Guest84: but will itbe better than preempt?
05:53 PM JT-Shop: better depends on hardware
05:53 PM Tom_L: exactly
05:54 PM Tom_L: i get better results with RTAI on my hardware
05:54 PM Tom_L: but that limits me to not using ethernet mesa cards
05:55 PM Guest84: i hezitate about it being better because i now can record at buffer 16 but can't mix with chains of pluginz with less than buffed 64 as each plugin adds latency
05:56 PM JT-Shop: sounds like you're more into audio than cnc
05:56 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/RTAI_TEST/RTAI-5.4.290.png
05:56 PM Guest84: i actually don't connect pc to internet and disabled usb but i can't disable networking and tcpip because xorg won't even load
05:56 PM Tom_L: no glxgears because i was running a much more intensive load
05:58 PM Guest84: anyway if you see that guy please asm him to make release with 32bit support for buster
05:59 PM Tom_L: email him
05:59 PM JT-Shop: quicker to DIY
05:59 PM Guest84: how?
05:59 PM JT-Shop: research
06:03 PM Tom_L: capnhindsight may know how to reach him
06:04 PM Tom_L: he's not here atm either
06:04 PM Tom_L: unless he's hiding on the far side
06:04 PM JT-Shop: never can tell with him
06:04 PM xxcoder: not currently active on discord
06:05 PM * Tom_L goes to entertain a 4mo old
06:05 PM Guest84: i noticed that on cnclinux cores are always loaded about 50% or more while with preempt cpu load depends on operating tasks. is it a benefit?
06:05 PM Tom_L: we got her for the weekend
06:05 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:06 PM Tom_L: we use isolcpus for that
06:06 PM JT-Shop: sugar her up before returning her
06:06 PM Tom_L: oh of course
06:07 PM xxcoder: reminds me of that unattended child sign. "if you leave child unattended here, we will feed child sugar and give free puppy"
06:07 PM Guest84: i also havd isolcpus activated
06:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I wonder if I will make it to being a grandparent.
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> my 5th gen laptop all updated.. (heading north for the week)
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that thing still is pretty nice. still runs the pci passthrough of the dedicated video card for windows 10/11
06:56 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> part of my 'relaxing' will be figuring out how the treehouse is going to be built.
06:58 PM roycroft: well i'm still not getting good alignment when i do front to back features
06:58 PM roycroft: and i'm thinking it's not me - i think my process is good
06:58 PM roycroft: i think it's the shaper origin
06:59 PM roycroft: i'm off by a few thousandths when i flip the board over and reindex
07:00 PM roycroft: shaper always say that the origin, in the hands of a skilled operator, is accurate to a "hundredth" (they mean ten thousandths) of an inch
07:00 PM roycroft: so maybe trying to do features on both sides of a board that have to align is not very feasible with the origin
07:01 PM roycroft: i think i can make this part all from one side, though, with the exception of two small screw holes that i can drill by hand
07:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> sounds like wood working tolerances...
07:04 PM xxcoder: yeah though you probably want tighter tols for front-back alignment
07:10 PM roycroft: i try to hold my wood parts to 0.001"
07:11 PM roycroft: saying wood needs looser tolerance because it moves with changes in moisture is bs
07:11 PM roycroft: metal does the same thing
07:11 PM roycroft: not due to moisture, but due to temperature
07:11 PM roycroft: and to a lesser degree
07:12 PM roycroft: if i left a 0.010" gap in a wood joint i would not expect anyone to ever pay me for the product with that huge gap
07:19 PM roycroft: so yeah, i can cut all the features except those two screw holes from the back with the shaper origin
07:19 PM roycroft: no more alignment issues
07:20 PM rifraf: made a drilling rig for baby lathe, https://desire3d.com/images/public/Drillrig1.jpg , waiting on correct ER8 collet to use small bits but works, https://desire3d.com/images/public/Drillrig3.jpg
07:20 PM roycroft: new nerdforge today, btw
07:21 PM roycroft: and this time martina took 40 terry pratchet books, removed the binding, and is making what i can only call a 'rolatext' out of them
07:41 PM xxcoder: whew egg burritos was yummy
08:06 PM roycroft: it's pizza night here
08:06 PM xxcoder: oh good, I'm on way
08:06 PM xxcoder: always room for pizza
09:06 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I haven't been around much
09:06 PM xxcoder: yo capt
09:07 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> I can ask the RTAI dev to peek in tomorrow
09:07 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Saturday
09:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Hey xxcoder@
09:10 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> But RTAI work is on hold for now
09:11 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> He has to take care of me again
09:13 PM xxcoder: take best care of yourself
09:14 PM xxcoder: *best possible
09:14 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Apparently I'm cancer free but they missed a benign brain tumor
09:14 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> So I get to have holes drilled in my head soon
09:15 PM xxcoder: reminds me of saying "I need this like another hole in head"
09:15 PM xxcoder: but you actually do. hopefully surgery to remove the tumor go well,
09:15 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.@> Yeah🤣
09:25 PM Tom_L: sorry to hear that. hope things work out for you
09:43 PM roycroft: the cancer free part is great
09:43 PM roycroft: but the holes in the head part, that sucks
09:44 PM roycroft: i hope it goes well
