#linuxcnc Calendar

12:52 AM Deejay: moin
04:01 AM Tom_L: morning
05:45 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:50 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:45 AM mrec: I have not had a look at linuxcnc G02/G03, but the freecad code says following:
08:45 AM mrec: // Split arc(circle) larger than half circle. Because gcode
08:45 AM mrec: // can't handle full circle?
08:45 AM mrec: does anyone know if linuxcnc supports full circles with G02/G03?
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It does.. the problem if the start and end are not exact - you get some odd arc..
08:50 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (I do it all the time for spiralling into a hole)
08:51 AM mrec: the freecad contours command is not good for a circle
08:51 AM mrec: contours operation*
08:51 AM mrec: it leaves the tool engaged at the center causing a groove
08:52 AM mrec: s/center/edge/
08:55 AM mrec: so the problem freecad tries to resolve is tolerance related
09:02 AM Tom_L: do a helix leadin
09:04 AM mrec: I will add this to freecad: https://snipboard.io/WLoHN7.jpg (but that's mitsubishi); there are still several manual mills in that shop which I want to change to linuxcnc first
09:05 AM mrec: first adaptive clearing of the hole, afterwards profiling
09:06 AM Tom_L: 0deg starts at 3'oclock but that may not hold true for all cad packages
09:07 AM Tom_L: some may start at 9'oclock
09:07 AM Tom_L: (written by union workers)
09:07 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> O_o
09:07 AM Tom_L: :)
09:08 AM mrec: did anyone check the accuracy/repeatability of various chinese edge finders?
09:08 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> pretyt much everything needs a lead in/out or you get marks on the part.
09:09 AM Tom_L: jt checked the one i got and found it to be quite accurate (touch probe)
09:09 AM mrec: I have this one https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005008964214281.html
09:09 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> the cheapie wired probe i have is pretty good. i did replace the stylus with a ruby one though
09:10 AM Tom_L: same thing
09:10 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> yup thats the one i have
09:10 AM mrec: it has a runout of 0.01mm at the moment, but it's not convenient to throw the cable into the machine all the time
09:10 AM mrec: https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005005980653992.html
09:10 AM Tom_L: i found spare tips for it too
09:10 AM mrec: I think about getting this one
09:10 AM Tom_L: 2nd link was a bust
09:10 AM Tom_L: i like mine
09:11 AM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/4f2tcY.jpg this link didn't work?
09:11 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> my way of doing the runout is to spin it while probing until the light stays on the whole time, but tuns off if you back off. so its consistent within a few tenths.
09:12 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> mrec: i want that one. but its too tall for this machine.
09:12 AM mrec: I can fix the runout with the setscrews (0.01mm is just my issue at the moment) but I did not test repeatability yet on the large mitsubishi machine
09:12 AM Tom_L: or use an axial indicator
09:12 AM Tom_L: oh i put an indicator on mine
09:13 AM mrec: I don't want to use anything manual it's a 3 axis machine at the moment before I change that one to LinuxCNC I want to change the other mills in that shop and add 5 axis to the other ones.
09:13 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> theres a lot of flex in the stock stylus. so for repeat, you want to always probe the same way. on "release". the stylus i got is shorter and stiffer, so its more consisten in every direction.
09:13 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/probe/probe_adjust.mp4
09:13 AM mrec: 3 axis = I need to turn around the stock more often than I would like to.. but I'll do it for now
09:14 AM mrec: that's how I did it too of course
09:15 AM Tom_L: for a cheap probe i'm rather satisfied
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> yeah
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> its well worth the money
09:16 AM mrec: wireless probing of the other edge finder would be interesting for me.
09:16 AM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/BTuregsau-Touch-Probe-Stainless-Finder/dp/B0DH1XCTHS
09:16 AM Tom_L: spare tips
09:17 AM Tom_L: you can probably find those on ali too
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> stainless is what you DONT want. wet noodle
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> you want carbide with a ruby tip
09:17 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> trick is they are hard to find in the thread
09:17 AM mrec: so far I did not have any problem with stainless
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> they flex and bend. and stay bent.
09:18 AM Tom_L: https://www.carbideprobes.com/
09:18 AM Tom_L: yeah but i'm using this for testing so i'm not overly concerned
09:18 AM mrec: and why should the ruby tip make any difference?
09:18 AM Tom_L: less wear?
09:18 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> thats ceramic. but same thing. problem is most are for renishaw threads
09:19 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> wear and hardness.
09:19 AM mrec: my stylus is short.
09:19 AM Tom_L: and ceramic will snap instead of bend
09:19 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> mine is super short. 10mm.
09:19 AM mrec: how do you want to wear out the stainless one do you rotate the probe while probing?
09:19 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> Tom_L: exactly, so you know its "dead"
09:19 AM Tom_L: it would take quite a while
09:20 AM Tom_L: unless you bend it, i'd say ss would do for most hobbyists and unless you're doing super tight tolerances
09:20 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hobby tinker people dont really notice these things. but when you are tying to "work" all the fussiness comes out. πŸ™‚
09:20 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> (and when you crash)
09:20 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> anyhow. back to herding cats
09:21 AM mrec: I only crashed the machine once and that damaged the bearings.. it was at the beginning when I started to recover it the encoder was dirty instead of sub mm it ran with full speed into the front.
09:21 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> i tihnk the error i ahve is cause the driver is shutting down, as opposed to not talking to the drive correctly. hm
09:22 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> i crashed the probe twice
09:22 AM Tom_L: all the probe routines i tested for flex i fubbed up maybe once
09:22 AM mrec: I implemented the probe routines 2 days ago and luckily did not crash it at all
09:22 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/touch-probe3-2.png
09:23 AM Tom_L: i wrote all those
09:23 AM mrec: (but that on a mitsubishi m60 .. 25 years old)
09:23 AM Tom_L: so i feel pretty lucky
09:23 AM Tom_L: modified a couple
09:23 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> Tom_L: how come you can post pichurs and i cant? πŸ˜›
09:23 AM Tom_L: i'm special :)
09:23 AM mrec: https://streamable.com/w1sou8
09:23 AM Tom_L: that's my webserver
09:23 AM Tom_L: and you're on the other side of the wall
09:24 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hehe
09:24 AM Tom_L: i'm on irc and you're not
09:24 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> i see
09:24 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> well
09:24 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> fone then
09:24 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> πŸ˜›
09:24 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> fine then
09:25 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> im planning on using qtdragon ui on my new setup
09:26 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> proba basic was proving to be too much trouble
09:26 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> * probe
09:26 AM Tom_L: you should give flex a look
09:26 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> never heard of it
09:26 AM Tom_L: that pic i posted is in the example files
09:27 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> is it part of the latest release, or an add on?
09:27 AM * Tom_L sheds some light
09:27 AM Tom_L: https://www.gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/flexgui/index.html
09:27 AM Tom_L: https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui
09:27 AM Tom_L: a separate gui builder
09:27 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ah ok
09:27 AM Tom_L: no coding required
09:27 AM Tom_L: the code is done for you
09:27 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> i seeee
09:28 AM Tom_L: wysiwyg
09:28 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> well, lets get the cats herded first. one thing at a time πŸ˜›
09:28 AM Tom_L: take a look at the examples
09:28 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> onces it all back working then i need to figure out the atc
09:28 AM Tom_L: jt wrote it from scratch
09:28 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> nice
09:29 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> someoene needs that for ethercat now πŸ˜›
09:29 AM Tom_L: i've helped debug it a bit
09:30 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> oh and then the s curve. seems so close, yet so far
09:30 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ha
09:30 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> _pokes grotius_
09:31 AM mrec: what's the current status of the s-curve support?
09:32 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> people have been testign his latest version and it seems to mostly work.
09:32 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> but still very "beta"
09:33 AM Tom_L: yeah i've heard a bit about it
09:34 AM Tom_L: turboss?
09:34 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> O_o
09:34 AM Tom_L: i think
09:34 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/55075-linuxcnc-scurve-motion-planner?start=0
09:35 AM Tom_L: maybe not. i thought turboss was working on something along those lines
09:36 AM Tom_L: ahh yeah, he's in the credits
09:36 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:36 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> their name is there. but this is mostly a grotius project form the last year or so.
09:37 AM JT-Shop: rain, rain, rain, rain what a forecast
09:37 AM Tom_L: yep
09:37 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> sun sun sun here. (for a few hours :P)
09:37 AM Tom_L: started here around 3am
09:37 AM Tom_L: ~2"
09:38 AM * JT-Shop dashes out to the other shop in the rain
09:39 AM * Tom_L gives JT-Shop a bucket to put on his head
09:39 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> _steals the bucket and plants tomatoes in ti_
09:40 AM Tom_L: i think you'd find flex more appealing than dragon though
09:42 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> we shall see
09:43 AM Tom_L: he even did up an axis lookalike in it
09:43 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ha
09:44 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> <-- uses flex... though a much older version of it...
09:50 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Sunny here.. about ready to do some more scrapping
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Need to fix a mower tire...
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think I have a replacement
09:51 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hand scraping the lawn?
09:52 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol. No.
09:53 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Need to pull the stuff that is too big to cut up. The cut up pile is getting big
09:54 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol. You know what I nean
09:54 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> nope, i dont. i dont have a lawn
09:54 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> only rocks
09:54 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> and... peaches
09:55 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> sooo many peaches
10:12 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - we are in the driftless reagon... So very little rocks.
10:14 AM roycroft: do you want some of mine?
10:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no.
10:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> sorry
10:14 AM * roycroft is in the process of trying to level his front lawn, and has many, many rocks to remove
10:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have a .0005/ft level you can use..
10:14 AM roycroft: i have a laser level that does a good enough job
10:15 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yah - those are nice. Built a house with one.
10:15 AM roycroft: when i was out surveying the property i actually attracted a small crowd of neighbors
10:16 AM roycroft: i had the laser level in the middle of the front yard and was walking around with a surveyor's stick that had the receiver attached to it
10:16 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol. I just ran across the laser level here. Now that I think about it - I wonder if the sensor is with it.
10:16 AM roycroft: this was all cheap, imported stuff - i think all the gear cost me about $300 total, but it seemed pretty high tech to my neighbors
10:17 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> right - I think ours is 'empire' - I have a few of their buble levels too. Seem good
10:17 AM roycroft: the good news about that task is that the parts that matter were level to within about 5cm
10:17 AM roycroft: it's just that there are lots of little hills and dales in between
10:18 AM roycroft: but the permimeter of the lot is pretty level, so i can use that for the rest
10:18 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> when I built the garage at the other house - the neighbor that is a contractor had to come over and see how strait my shingles where. Came up the ladder and looked down the courses. He approved..
10:18 AM roycroft: the front yard is going to be my garden - it will be filled with raised beds, so while it doesn't have to be perfectly level, it needs to be close enough that it's not a lot of fiddly work to get the beds installed
10:19 AM roycroft: i did a lot of roofing work when i was a kid in my 20s
10:19 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I can't imagine doing it for a living. oof. I guess I would probably be in shape
10:20 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
10:22 AM roycroft: i was in good shape at the time
10:22 AM roycroft: that was when i was a competitive bicycle racer as well
10:22 AM roycroft: it's been all downhill since those days
10:23 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> so 2 of my drives actually went to op mode. 1 didnt. hmm. maybe i botched something on the 3rd (different model drive)
10:23 AM _unreal: hum
10:23 AM _unreal is now known as _unreal_
10:24 AM roycroft: i have to decide still how i'm going to roof the shop
10:24 AM _unreal_: t4nk_fn, you live?
10:24 AM roycroft: i'm reframing it - it's a low pitch gable roof now (3 in 12 or so), and its going to be reframed as a steep gambrel
10:25 AM roycroft: metal roofing would be nice on that, but i'm not sure i want to deal with the expense of it
10:25 AM roycroft: it would be easy to install, though, which is a factor
10:25 AM Tom_L: i rolled it on my patio instead of 3 tab
10:25 AM roycroft: the cheapest 3 tap shingles i can get will at least 20 years, and at my age i'm not thinking beyond that
10:25 AM roycroft: so that's how i might go
10:25 AM roycroft: will last, that is
10:26 AM Tom_L: wasn't much pitch on the patio either and it was quick
10:26 AM Tom_L: got the heavy duty roll stuff
10:26 AM roycroft: roll roofing on a steep gambrel roof would not be an fun at all to install
10:26 AM roycroft: but on a shallow roof, sure
10:26 AM roycroft: i've done it many times
10:26 AM roycroft: cheap, fast, and effective
10:26 AM Tom_L: everything else has 3 tab
10:26 AM Tom_L: i hated putting on interlocking when i was young
10:27 AM Tom_L: you don't see those much anymore
10:27 AM Tom_L: not here anyway
10:28 AM _unreal_: I would also love to build a tiki hut/bar
10:28 AM _unreal_: at the new house
10:28 AM roycroft: that would be fun, _unreal_
10:28 AM _unreal_: god its killing me, EPIC Universe is now open as of today
10:28 AM roycroft: it would not fit in around here, but in florida, sure
10:29 AM roycroft: it is tourist season, for sure
10:29 AM roycroft: last night i had to go to the local market for a couple things, and highway 58 had at least 5x the normal amount of traffic
10:29 AM roycroft: mostly rvs and pickups pulling boats
10:30 AM roycroft: i need to add at least 15-20 minutes to trips to town between now and labor day
10:31 AM * roycroft has been shopping for a nice looking metal e-stop switch, and hadn't found a decent one for <$40
10:32 AM roycroft: i'm thinking i might need to use one of the cheap plastic ones, and turn a nice mushroom knob for it out of a chunk of ash
10:32 AM _unreal_: roy you will be amazed as a lot of the new tools I have
10:33 AM roycroft: that actually might look really cool, especially if i dye it dark red
10:33 AM _unreal_: wood working and metal working
10:33 AM roycroft: sound like you need a proper shop, _unreal_
10:33 AM Tom_L: but wood it still be OSHA compliant?
10:33 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hmm. so its cycling safe op and op and error. this is probably "good". it means things are talking. hmm
10:33 AM roycroft: hopefully you'll be able to close on a house soon
10:33 AM roycroft: what is osha?
10:34 AM roycroft: isn't that one of those communist groups that is being abolished?
10:34 AM roycroft: er, sorry, i meant "radical left wing communist"
10:34 AM Tom_L: it gets ignored until one gets slapped with a 14k fine per incident
10:34 AM * roycroft is not very good at using sufficient pejoratives
10:35 AM roycroft: yeah, but if i buy enough of that new crypto currency that will never happen
10:35 AM roycroft: but if the button is red it probably is compliant, regardless
10:36 AM roycroft: and since i'm going to do my traditional dark mahogany treatment on the case, like on my brew system controller, staining the button dark red will match nicely, with enough contrast to be apparent in an emergency
10:36 AM roycroft: i'm still thinking about a glass front panel
10:37 AM Tom_L: brown or red mahogany?
10:37 AM roycroft: both
10:37 AM roycroft: i use bright red dye on the mahogany, then dark brown dye over that
10:37 AM roycroft: so i get the reddish tones, but it's mostly brown
10:38 AM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/BrewSystem/IMG_1012.JPG
10:38 AM roycroft: kind of like that
10:38 AM Tom_L: looks nice
10:39 AM roycroft: i know some don't like that look, but i really like the early 20th century industrial look a lot
10:39 AM roycroft: and i think i'm getting pretty good at reproducing that look
10:39 AM Tom_L: mahogany & walnut were quite popular back then
10:39 AM roycroft: yes
10:39 AM Tom_L: prior to that was limed oak
10:40 AM roycroft: and cheap woods stained/dyed to look like mahogany and walnut
10:40 AM Tom_L: which i hated
10:40 AM roycroft: and then we got to mid-century with a lot of teak
10:40 AM roycroft: which is also a nice look
10:40 AM roycroft: up until the '80s things were pretty stylish
10:41 AM roycroft: but then, flat sawn red oak took over the world
10:41 AM roycroft: and everything went to hell
10:42 AM Tom_L: i forget where tiger oak fit in but think it was also prior to walnut/mahogany phase
10:42 AM roycroft: so today i am going to the old property to prep a few things for moving - i have an air hose reel mounted to the ceiling of the fabrication shop, a chain host truck on an overhead i-beam, etc.
10:42 AM roycroft: all that is coming down today
10:43 AM roycroft: and tomorrow a friend will be joining me, and we're going to try to get the last of my stuff out of that place
10:43 AM Tom_L: careful with overhead things
10:43 AM roycroft: if things go well, i will be finished with the move by tomorrow
10:43 AM roycroft: i will be very careful
10:43 AM roycroft: looking up triggers the vertigo
10:43 AM roycroft: there are only three things overhead that i need to deal with
10:44 AM roycroft: but i will take my time and be exceptionally careful when taking them down
10:44 AM roycroft: i also have to get the extractor down for the blasting cabinet
10:44 AM roycroft: it's mounted to an exterior wall, and i forget how it mounts
10:45 AM roycroft: it's not too heavy though, and i should be able to handle it myself
10:45 AM roycroft: if not i'll wait until tomorrow to take it donw
10:45 AM roycroft: i'm trying to get as much done ahead of time as possible, so my friend doesn't have to do too much
10:47 AM roycroft: i moved into the new house on 30 may of last year
10:48 AM roycroft: it's hard to believe that i'm almost done moving, finally, and also hard to believe that it's taken almost a year to move
10:48 AM Tom_L: wheel issue, wrist issue, back issue....
10:49 AM Tom_L: there's a couple months right there
10:50 AM roycroft: yeah
10:50 AM roycroft: more like 8 months of downtime, basically
10:50 AM roycroft: and the plan was that the move would take about 3 months
10:50 AM roycroft: so add that to 8, and it's almost a year
10:51 AM roycroft: it will be a huge relief - i will be able to finally focus on the new place, both mentally and physically
10:52 AM _unreal_: roycroft, I've been force to have about 6 years of down time tanks to my late father
10:52 AM roycroft: for this whole year, even when i have had time at the new place to do things, my mind has been on the old place, and that's made it hard to get anything done here
10:52 AM roycroft: that, along with things being in boxes and disorganized
10:52 AM _unreal_: roycroft, I have 2 30' storage units filled to the brim. to deal with :/
10:53 AM roycroft: i am just at the point of starting to organize the shop, and actually be able to go out and instantly put my hands on something i need
10:53 AM roycroft: _unreal_: i have 2 20' containers rented up here full of stuff
10:53 AM roycroft: so i know how that goes
10:53 AM roycroft: and i find myself going to the storage place at least a couple times/week to try to find something i need
10:54 AM roycroft: i'll probably keep one of the containers indefinitely, and line it with shelving to use as a warehouse/general storage place, but i want to get rid of the other one this summer
10:55 AM _unreal_: I want to get rid of both of mine killing me $1k/mo
10:55 AM roycroft: i pay $85/month per unit
10:55 AM roycroft: so it's not that bad
10:55 AM * roycroft wonders how the mini-router will do machining steel sheet metal
10:56 AM _unreal_: what rpm?
10:56 AM roycroft: pretty fast - i think 10k is as slow as the spindle goes
10:56 AM _unreal_: and dry or with any kind of cutting aid?
10:56 AM roycroft: but with a tiny cutter that should work
10:56 AM roycroft: probably manual mist
10:56 AM _unreal_: I'd go at least 5 flut
10:57 AM roycroft: i have some chassis punches that will work for some of the openings i need
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> regular steel is pretyt easy to cut
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> at high speed
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> just take very light passes
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> adaptive clearing etc
10:57 AM _unreal_: littleshop you still need a VERY rigid machine
10:57 AM _unreal_: any play as it doesnt matter
10:57 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> well thats a given
10:57 AM roycroft: but for d-sub openings and the like it would be nice to use the mini-router instead of a jeweler's saw and files
10:58 AM roycroft: and having the machine help built itself would be fun
10:58 AM roycroft: build
10:58 AM _unreal_: roycroft, hence I can not wait to get my mini endmill setup and convert it to cnc
10:58 AM _unreal_: Though I'm torn between having it in the gurage or having it in the office/bed room
10:59 AM roycroft: i just got a good deal on some fans for the controller
10:59 AM roycroft: i also just got the relays i need
10:59 AM _unreal_: You know... thats an interesting though I have not explored with my self yet
10:59 AM roycroft: deciding on the e-stop button and some front panel indicators is about all that's left for procurement
10:59 AM _unreal_: I have a metal lathe, and metal heavy duty mini end mill
11:00 AM _unreal_: I think I really need to keep them in the garage
11:00 AM roycroft: i hope to have that stuff ordered this weekend
11:00 AM _unreal_: but I do want to CNC both of them
11:00 AM roycroft: i'm working on vent designs for the fans, and have a prototype design done
11:01 AM roycroft: i have some old pine boards in the shop that i'll dye that dark mahogany color and use the shaper origin to make the prototype cutout
11:01 AM roycroft: i figure it might take 2-3 iterations until i get the look that i want, but it should look pretty nice in the end
11:01 AM roycroft: i'm going for both style and good airflow, of course
11:01 AM roycroft: form follows function, but form does not have to be ugly
11:02 AM _unreal_: nothing worse then an ugly form I always say
11:02 AM _unreal_: god. this laptop keyboard dbl types key strokes like mad. I dont know why
11:03 AM roycroft: then i'm sure you avoid about 95% of youtube videos by makers
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> _unreal_: cancer? nuclear war?
11:03 AM _unreal_: littlemachine?
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> you said nothing was worse
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> πŸ˜›
11:04 AM _unreal_: ahh.... squirrel moment. O,o ?
11:51 AM xxcoder: roycroft: honestly till you implement pid, id sugegst always set spindle to max rpm or near it anyway, like 75%. it loses torque below that pretty quickly
11:52 AM xxcoder: pid would allow it to ramp up voltage when rpm isnt meeting requirement
11:55 AM roycroft: i can use tiny cutters with steel
11:55 AM roycroft: so spindle speed won't be a big deal
11:55 AM roycroft: the thickest steel i anticipate ever cutting on that machine will be 0.120"
11:55 AM xxcoder: yeah. just letting you know how torque curves :D
11:56 AM roycroft: and that can be done in as many passes as necessary
11:56 AM roycroft: i'm pretty familiar with the loss of torque on those little motors at low speed
11:56 AM xxcoder: ya just making sure lol
11:56 AM xxcoder: good morning btw
11:56 AM roycroft: hi
11:56 AM roycroft: and it is a lovely morning
11:57 AM xxcoder: yep
11:57 AM roycroft: i've been watering the herb garden
11:57 AM roycroft: getting ready to head into town to deal with the old property
11:57 AM roycroft: hopefully tomorrow will be the last day of moving
11:58 AM xxcoder: hope so. hope theres no surpise stuff in closet or something
11:58 AM roycroft: the house has been completely empty since around thanksgiving
11:58 AM roycroft: it's in the final stage of remodeling now
11:59 AM roycroft: and will be on the market soon
11:59 AM roycroft: it's the outbuildings on the other lot that i'm finishing up, and i was there last weekend assessing what needs to be done
11:59 AM Tom_L: don't let any squatters in the door
11:59 AM roycroft: there should be no surprises unless i have trouble removing something
12:00 PM roycroft: the only variables are my veritgo and my back
12:00 PM Tom_L: alwasys have a bigger hammer on hand
12:00 PM roycroft: i'm bringing lots of tools today
12:01 PM Tom_L: i was gonna rewrite one of my probe routines but think i'll just be lazy today
12:01 PM roycroft: i'm going to try to haul my small metal stock today
12:01 PM Tom_L: make it a bit more efficient
12:01 PM roycroft: all small pieces, but worth a lot to me, and it adds up to quite a bit of stuf
12:02 PM Tom_L: i keep small chunks of brass/bronze bar on hand when i can find them
12:02 PM roycroft: much of what is there is ss and brass
12:02 PM roycroft: but there's some squares of 3/8" and 1/2" steel plate that i use for machine tables
12:02 PM Tom_L: i have a little ss but not much
12:02 PM roycroft: some pieces of dom
12:02 PM roycroft: tool steel
12:02 PM roycroft: etc.
12:03 PM roycroft: small but valuable
12:03 PM roycroft: i've gotten better at getting rid of wood smalls over the years, but i still have a hard time getting rid of metal smalls
12:03 PM * JT-Cave tries to decide what vehicle to drive to our anniversary dinner as it's still raining
12:03 PM roycroft: drive the one without the leaky roof
12:04 PM roycroft: and happy anniversary
12:04 PM JT-Cave: that rules out the C3 then
12:04 PM Tom_L: yep happy anniversary
12:05 PM roycroft: i should get ready to go - the last soaker hose has about a half hour to do its thing
12:05 PM roycroft: and i'd like to leave when i'm done watering
12:12 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as unterhausen
12:13 PM xxcoder: metal smells?
12:13 PM xxcoder: interesting
12:15 PM * JT-Shop has a plan to get the very heavy press brake down the last foot using the motorcycle jack... I think
12:19 PM xxcoder: certainly I figured there would be smells while its being cut but just sitting has smell too is a surpise to me
12:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Xxcoder, "smalls" not "smells", think small cutoffs/scraps
12:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Lol
12:34 PM xxcoder: ah yeah misread lol
12:34 PM xxcoder: thanks
12:34 PM xxcoder: was pondering how cnc shop would smell if all metals had a smell
12:34 PM xxcoder: well for a bit anyway
12:35 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> metal smells of cutting oils and grime usually
12:35 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ha
12:38 PM xxcoder: cool :) I figured that shop wouldnt smell good at all but thats extent I thought of it
12:39 PM Tom_L: steel sludge in the bottom of a coolant tank has an odor for sure
12:42 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> yuk
12:59 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> cast iron cutting smells nice but hurts my nose
01:04 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> found a new xml and now i get error b2. thats progress!
01:10 PM Tom_L: better than the 1 b4
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> the manual doesnt say what b2 means
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> sigh
01:11 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> haha
01:14 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> oh, it might be referencing an inpot state
01:14 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hm
01:16 PM * rdtsc hands littleshopofrandom the secret decoder glasses.
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> " EtherCAT communications errors
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: occurred one or more times."
01:19 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> seems to be not important maybe. just referencing the previous error?
01:20 PM rdtsc: here's possibly a dumb question... use wireshark/pcap to snoop on the traffic
01:22 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> dont know what that is
01:23 PM rdtsc: low-level network packet analyzer
01:24 PM rdtsc: can see every byte "on the wire"
01:24 PM Tom_L: yeah that might help
01:26 PM rdtsc: wireshark is great if you plug some unknown device in and it's not setup DHCP and you can't set it's IP address... start a capture, plug the device in, wait a minute, stop capture, and search for arp.isgratuitous - should see the device asking for it's IP
01:28 PM rdtsc: it could have packet filters for CAN, not sure
01:28 PM rdtsc: even if it doesn't, can filter by device IP addresses to whittle down the bits of interest
01:30 PM Tom_L: doesn't look like saleae supports ethercat yet
01:30 PM Tom_L: https://support.saleae.com/protocol-analyzers/supported-protocols
01:31 PM rdtsc: sigrok does not https://www.sigrok.org/wiki/Protocol_decoders
01:40 PM rdtsc: nor kingst https://www.qdkingst.com/en/plist
01:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> all 3 drives in op mode, no errors
01:47 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> so... i guess that parts done. now i need to make a config to use them
01:50 PM xxcoder: seems openbuilds.com is going out of business
01:50 PM xxcoder: might be chance to grab stuff you want
02:05 PM JT-Mobile: Yo
02:06 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> mama
02:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - after fighting with the bead on the mower tire - i gave up and bought a 5 gallon bead setter from harbor freight.
02:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> holy crap - scary good
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think the only thing I should add is a air fitting so I can use it as a portable tire filler..
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It like set the bead - both sides with one fill
02:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> poof
02:30 PM Tom_L: ether is more fun
02:31 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> as long as theres no cats in the tire
02:35 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hSpwAVovl8 HOW AIRCRAFT ENGINES ARE MADE! Continental’s 120th Anniversary Factory Tour
02:35 PM JT-Mobile: Stray cat strut?
02:38 PM JT-Mobile: I used a bucket to inflate lawn mower tires
02:39 PM JT-Mobile: Works great
02:40 PM Tom_L: 506 tool changer
02:41 PM Tom_L: buying that many tools would put some shops out of business
02:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> JT-Mobile: how?
02:44 PM JT-Mobile: Put the tire on the bucket press down then fill
02:45 PM JT-Mobile: The bucket seals the far side
02:45 PM Tom_L: the ole tire in the bucket trick!
02:45 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> has to be a small tire, or a really big bucket
02:45 PM Tom_L: mower tires
02:45 PM xxcoder: lawn mower tires isnt known to be huge in most cases
02:45 PM JT-Mobile: Yup
02:45 PM Tom_L: just don't forget to take it out of the bucket before filling
02:46 PM Tom_L: i bet earthmover tires are fun
02:47 PM JT-Mobile: You put it on top of the bucket
02:47 PM Tom_L: ok
02:47 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> Tom_L: they have bead locks, so they are somewhat easy (just really heavy)
02:48 PM xxcoder: https://youtu.be/r6Bcofn8zUU
02:49 PM xxcoder: interesting
02:49 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> im not totally sure the bucket is doing anything there. hm
02:49 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> maybe
02:49 PM xxcoder: its doing a lot
02:49 PM xxcoder: it'd be impossible without bucket
02:50 PM Tom_L: alot harder anyway
02:50 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> people tell me that about bike tubeless tires, but i put them on with a mini hand pump πŸ˜›
02:51 PM JT-Mobile: The bucket seals one side of the tire
02:52 PM Tom_L: JT-Mobile, rain finally move out?
03:03 PM JT-Mobile: No rain at Chaumette Vinyard
03:05 PM Tom_L: looks like you gotta wear your fancy digs there
03:07 PM JT-Mobile: Carhartt T shirt lol
03:07 PM Tom_L: like i said....
03:09 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> LMAO
03:10 PM Tom_L: reminds me of Brooks' 'Friends in low places'
03:11 PM JT-Mobile: LOL
03:18 PM xxcoder: hand tool resuce restore of meat saw is interesting
03:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> neat - never tried the bucket trick - but boy the tank works good
03:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> suprised me
03:20 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i have to get steroid injections in my lower back for sciatica, on this Thursday... i bet that will be interesting...
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 42 started
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that thing just goes.. (although it has a new hei distributier...) but still
04:30 PM xxcoder: fun sat for videos. yorkshire, hand tool resuce, blonihack, and this old tony
04:37 PM xxcoder: yorkshire is as insane as ever
04:41 PM _unreal: I'm going nuts being stuck in a hotel ?(
04:43 PM _unreal: I wonder if I should build a vertical wall mounted cnc in the garage when I close on the housese?
04:43 PM _unreal: house
04:43 PM _unreal: to do something with the 2.2kw
04:44 PM _unreal: I'm just torn
04:44 PM xxcoder: lawnmower. automatic one
04:44 PM _unreal: My current new cnc machine is going to be hard enough to get into that room as is.
04:45 PM _unreal: takes 3 people to move it. 2 to hold it. and one to move the control box
04:45 PM _unreal: I didnt have time to setup a detachable wiring system for the steppers
04:45 PM _unreal: and all wiring
04:47 PM * Tom_L gives _unreal a box of wire crimps
05:03 PM _unreal: why thank you
05:52 PM _unreal: I'm looking at all kinds of outdoor kitchen ideas
05:54 PM _unreal: Its hard to come up with ideas with out being in the house. but at least I can put together some design thoughts that could be a good fit
05:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/NmXTvVbcvu2hypeY7
05:59 PM _unreal: theres the old girl
05:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Getting fuller
05:59 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Need side boards...
06:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Should fire up the sawmill and make some
06:14 PM Tom_L: sanford & sons
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hmm, now its saying my hal pins dont exist. how rude
06:18 PM Tom_L: look in hal show
06:21 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hallshow shuts off as soon as linuxcnc starts
06:21 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> so that seems not to be an option
06:21 PM Tom_L: in a separate window?
06:21 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> yes
06:22 PM Tom_L: mmmm
06:22 PM Tom_L: bugger
06:22 PM Tom_L: dmesg maybe
06:22 PM Tom_L: not sure that would show pins
06:22 PM Tom_L: clear it then start lcnc
06:23 PM Tom_L: you can't start hal show after lcnc is running?
06:23 PM Tom_L: you should be able to
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> linuxcnc starts and stops with a debug window
06:23 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> at which point there is nothing to show
06:24 PM Tom_L: find the error line
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> yes, i have the error line, its telling me the pin doesnt exist
06:24 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> but it does in the xml
06:24 PM Tom_L: what's above that and are you sure the xml is loading in the config?
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hard to know if the xml is loading. 99% sure
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> cause it would error that
06:25 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> (it has before)
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hmm
06:31 PM * Tom_L goes back out to test some code
06:33 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> *pokes linuxcnc
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> i dont see the error. oh well. dinner time
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> yay found the issue. have to reference by "name" instead of slave number
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> (see, more missing steps!)
06:43 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> haha
06:44 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> its like telling someone to use and if else statement and forgetting the whole c++ part...
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I found where they hide them!
06:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/SmfoySWWrqVWkhHj7
06:54 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ha
07:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> nice having plasma...
07:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/tzwgJc53HwSDbSmm9
07:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> although - I burned my finger with slag
07:36 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> why are you murduring that poot forklift?
07:36 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> * murdering that poor
07:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it sat outside and the engine got water in it.
07:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> plus it sucked
07:38 PM rdtsc: now you need a metalworking furnace, and a cope and drag :)
07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> you need to become an expert on ethercat and then tell me what to do
07:38 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> :x
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> (actually i think im done the ethercat part and now need a linuxcnc config to run it)
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol. Don't have any want to blacksmith..
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> you could forge useless trinkets though on youtube!
07:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Ugh
07:40 PM rdtsc: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/6pL7kDeJIPY
07:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Ben (I don't remember his irc name) would mill foam with linuxcnc and cast parts. Saw him do it at one of the cnc fest (first maybe?) in galesberg...
07:44 PM rdtsc: it's pure magic
07:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> He hasn't been around in ages..
07:44 PM rdtsc: stand upwind or wear respirator though... fumes are mighty awful
07:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Fenn!

07:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - the mob

07:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the og
07:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://www.fennetic.net/
07:51 PM Tom_L: ok probe routine updated
08:26 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, did fenn contribute to emc early on?
08:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think so
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that was a long time ago
08:27 PM Tom_L: i remember him
08:27 PM Tom_L: chatted a few times but never met
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> He was for sure at the first cnc fest I went to
08:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (obvously - I have pictures)
08:28 PM Tom_L: where was the other pic taken?
08:28 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> same fest
08:28 PM Tom_L: i recognize a few faces from wichita
08:28 PM Tom_L: don't know all the names though
08:29 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> I dont know any of you peoples.
08:29 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> πŸ˜›
08:29 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> well, cept skunkworks
08:29 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that was in Galesburg Illinois.....
08:30 PM Tom_L: i was only there a short time
08:30 PM roycroft: ladies, germs, good evening to you
08:31 PM roycroft: i
08:31 PM Tom_L: sup ya ole hippie!
08:31 PM roycroft: am back from the old place, having made significant progress but not as much as i'd like
08:31 PM roycroft: one of the outbuildings is now officially abandoned
08:32 PM roycroft: the big disappointment is that i want to keep the top of my old welding table, which is a 3'x5' sheet of 1/8" steel
08:32 PM roycroft: but it's welded to the frame
08:32 PM Tom_L: woops
08:32 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> break out the grinder
08:32 PM Tom_L: leave it and get one of JT's tables
08:32 PM Tom_L: they're 1" plate iirc
08:32 PM roycroft: i brought my portable power supply with me and hoped to use an angle grinder to cut through the welds, but the power supply couldn't put put quite enough power
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> that sounds expensive
08:33 PM roycroft: the grinder would start spinning slowly, then stop
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> left to right.. steve stalling, matt shaver, john kesnic(sp), jeper, jon elson, stephen padnos, dave engval, don't know, cradek
08:33 PM roycroft: by that time my back was hurting, and i went home
08:33 PM roycroft: i think tomorrow i'll just cut the legs off with a sawzall and haul it up here, then cut the top off the frame
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> skunkworks8841@: i dont know none of thems. i only know people by their names on the forum. haha
08:34 PM Tom_L: dave is in the white pants?
08:34 PM roycroft: i still see light at the end of the tunnel, but the tunnel is a bit longer than i wanted it to be
08:34 PM roycroft: not a lot, but a bit
08:35 PM * roycroft is grilling tonight - first corn on the cob of the year
08:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> sorry - ray henry was between jepler and jon elson
08:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> forgot one person
08:35 PM roycroft: and traffic is insane crazy
08:35 PM roycroft: the switch flipped from the off season to peak tourist season literally overnight
08:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> steve stalling, matt shaver, john kesnic(sp), jeper, ray henry, jon elson, stephen padnos, dave engval, don't know, cradek
08:38 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Matt shaver was at one of the tormach get-togthers recently.. I didn't know who he was as he lost a ton of weight..
08:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - he said - oh - you haven't seem me in a while.. I am matt.. I was like - holy crap!
08:39 PM Tom_L: heh
08:45 PM rdtsc: littleshopofrandom, prolly not much help, but https://etherlab.org/en_GB/getting-started
08:45 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> rdtsc: nope, were way past all that stuff
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> its all running. just need to do the actual linux config side
08:46 PM Tom_L: he's to the easy part now
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> * linuxcnc
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> Tom_L: easy for you!
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ive only every used the wizards
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> πŸ˜›
08:46 PM Tom_L: what are they?
08:46 PM Tom_L: :)
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ha
08:46 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> ha
08:49 PM rdtsc: old: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Etherlab
08:49 PM rdtsc: rpi example: https://gist.github.com/Bouni/8b4532d0bdf012bd83c65d3eb62f8aa2
08:50 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> O_o
08:51 PM Tom_L: how come didn't you find that earlier?
08:52 PM rdtsc: ya know it's fun when Intel gets involved, lol https://eci.intel.com/docs/3.3/development/tutorials/enable-linuxcnc.html
08:52 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> O_o
08:52 PM rdtsc: all still looks quite custom
08:58 PM rdtsc: and to really blow everyone's mind (very short), https://www.youtube.com/shorts/uUNzzLN4EYE
09:26 PM roycroft: well that was delicious
09:26 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i've ever had corn on the cob that was so sweet in may
09:42 PM xxcoder: nice
09:43 PM xxcoder: I kinda wish theres something like dash cooker for egg but for corns
09:43 PM xxcoder: low water usage cooking corns
09:43 PM xxcoder: low power too
09:43 PM xxcoder: boiling water is really expensive
09:45 PM xxcoder: theres apparently microwave corn cooker
09:45 PM xxcoder: dunno if any good
09:47 PM Tom_L: https://therecipecritic.com/air-fryer-corn-on-the-cob/
09:48 PM xxcoder: heyy I have air fryer
09:48 PM Tom_L: i thought you did
09:48 PM xxcoder: olive oil needed, I have it too, though running out of it
09:49 PM xxcoder: thanks! didnt even think of air fryer
09:49 PM xxcoder: im really enjoying my air fryer so far
09:50 PM xxcoder: dash model
09:52 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> another step foreward. axis ui starts. but e stop is locked on.
09:53 PM Tom_L: limits
09:53 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> hm
09:53 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> limites are set right i ... think...
09:54 PM roycroft: i should get an air fryer
09:55 PM roycroft: it would save a lot of unhealthy cooking
09:55 PM Tom_L: we use one quite a bit
09:55 PM roycroft: i'm not a fan of fried food generally
09:55 PM lcnc-relay: <littleshopofrandom@> scale is wrong. hmm
09:56 PM roycroft: but an air fryer seems to me, having never used one, to be more like roasting than frying
09:56 PM Tom_L: did some salmon in it the other day
09:56 PM xxcoder: yeah its much closer to oven. forced air oven
09:56 PM roycroft: i grilled steelhead tonight
09:56 PM roycroft: that was dinner - grilled steelhead, grilled corn on the cob, and a salad
09:56 PM xxcoder: yummy microwaved frozen food today. it was really unexpectly delious
09:57 PM roycroft: most of my microwaving is heating up meals i cooked and froze, and making popcorn
09:58 PM xxcoder: im quite bad on cooking so yeah lol
09:58 PM xxcoder: im been eating much healther last year or so than ever
09:58 PM xxcoder: I used to eat crap food all time
09:58 PM roycroft: i got rid of my chest freezer when i moved here, because i did not have room for it
09:59 PM roycroft: but i brought up my upright freezer, and there's plenty of room in that for microwaveable meals
09:59 PM roycroft: and i still have my chamber vacuum sealer, so it's really easy to seal up meals and store them for a year or so in the freezer
10:00 PM roycroft: without freezer burn or off flavors
10:00 PM xxcoder: nice
10:00 PM roycroft: yeah
10:00 PM xxcoder: I hear sealing it in bag then ice cube it would make it last *really* long time
10:00 PM roycroft: i bought that vacuum sealer in my heavy brewing days, for hops and the like, but i've used it more for food than brewing
10:01 PM xxcoder: ice blocking any and all water vapor from getting in or out
10:01 PM roycroft: well a good vacuum sealer is the best
10:01 PM roycroft: it gets rid of all the air
10:01 PM roycroft: but you have to have a chamber vacuum sealer
10:01 PM roycroft: those seal-a-meal things that suck air out of quilted bags are crap
10:02 PM roycroft: they don't work well and the bags are insanely expensive
10:02 PM xxcoder: oh talking about freeze, I saw freeze dryer thing in costco first time fairly recently. but it costs so much in power than its not worth it lol. it doesnt scale well at all
10:03 PM roycroft: this week's gold rush: mine rescue is in oregon
10:03 PM * roycroft will see if blondihacks is back after this episode
10:04 PM roycroft: i'm pretty beat after the moving work today
10:04 PM roycroft: i think zoning out in front of the tv is about all i'm up to this evening
10:05 PM roycroft: i'll keep looking for a e-stop switch
10:05 PM roycroft: but i'm really leaning towards turning one on the lathe
10:05 PM xxcoder: one I got was really cheap lol
10:05 PM xxcoder: but maybe ok for testing
10:05 PM roycroft: i want a nice looking one
10:05 PM roycroft: yeah, i have a bunch for testing
10:06 PM roycroft: if i turn a button out of wood, i'll try burning some lettering on it with the laser
10:06 PM roycroft: that would be interesting, as the button would be the traditional mushroom shape, so i'd be burning lettering into a dome, not a plane
10:06 PM roycroft: i've never tried that
10:06 PM xxcoder: would weight of button have any effect?
10:07 PM roycroft: it shouldn't
10:07 PM roycroft: and it won't weigh that much more than plasti
10:07 PM roycroft: c
10:07 PM xxcoder: true wood is quite light
10:07 PM roycroft: ash is pretty dense for wood
10:07 PM roycroft: but still not too heavy
10:08 PM roycroft: as i've said many times before, i like making fancy stuff for shop tools/fixtures, as it lets me explore new techniques that i can use on for sale products and household products
10:08 PM roycroft: so it's really not too crazy, imo, to put a lot of energy into making an e-stop switch
10:08 PM xxcoder: well its your time
10:08 PM xxcoder: youre infinitely more productive than me
10:08 PM roycroft: oh
10:09 PM roycroft: i forgot to mention
10:09 PM roycroft: i found my shellac brushes today!
10:09 PM roycroft: i've been looking for them for a year
10:09 PM roycroft: and now i have them
10:09 PM roycroft: i really wanted to make sure i found them
10:10 PM roycroft: not because they're expensive, which they are - one cost $70 and the other cost $50 - but because they've been made of unobtanium for at least the last year
10:10 PM roycroft: but i found them, and they are in my car
10:10 PM roycroft: i am pretty excited about that
10:11 PM roycroft: they should have been in my paint/solvent cabinet, but they were not
10:11 PM roycroft: they will be by tomorrow, though
10:12 PM roycroft: and we're moving my paint cart tomorrow, so i'll have my sprayers and stuff
10:12 PM * roycroft will be ready to do finishing after this weekend
10:13 PM xxcoder: nice
10:23 PM roycroft: i have no idea where the paint cart is going to live, which is the primary reason i haven't moved it yet
11:32 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/187245016504
11:32 PM roycroft: i found a nice looking e-stop button that will fit the controller chassis
11:32 PM roycroft: for a reasonable price
11:34 PM roycroft: the mushroom knob looks like anodised aluminium
11:41 PM * roycroft has spent probably about 3 hours looking for that switch - it's a very expensive one, even though the out of pocket cost is small
11:41 PM xxcoder: that does look good
11:43 PM roycroft: yeah, i really like the look
11:43 PM roycroft: and i would almost certainly invest more than 3 hours designing and making an ash knob for an e-stop switch
11:45 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/314822285298
11:45 PM roycroft: i like that one too, but i did not want to spend that much
11:45 PM xxcoder: very industual
11:46 PM roycroft: real industrial, not new-fangled industrial
11:51 PM roycroft: i think the one i just bought will work fine
11:51 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> vintage industrial, aka some parts are radioactive
11:52 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> kid at work loves old industrial shit because its components are sometimes radioactive
11:54 PM * roycroft looks over at the kerosene lamp on the end table next to him that is made of uranium glass
11:54 PM roycroft: that e-stop switch i bought probably dates from the 1970s or so
11:54 PM roycroft: well after radioactive materials were used in things
11:55 PM roycroft: watch makers stopped using radium in wristwatch lume in the late '50s
