06:56 AM rdtsc-w: morning. MesaNewbie, if the board is new, it likely already has default firmware on it. If not new, could have any manner of customized firmware on it. Can try the mesaflash tool to give a summary of it's configuration; the linuxcnc forums should have an example of using it. Such as the first response here: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/37631-does-anyone-have-a-link-to-a-good-tutorial-on-flashing-a-mesa-card-7i96e-and-7i8
06:57 AM rdtsc-w: oh, no longer here (and not discord) hmmpf.
06:57 AM * rdtsc-w sips coffee to wake up...
06:58 AM JT-Cave: fyi mesact is the easy way to check what firmware is on a mesa card
07:24 AM rdtsc-w: does that work with the spi boards? my memory is terrible anymore
07:27 AM rdtsc-w: the identify-firmware feature. maybe it didn't identify mine, because it had some strange firmware on it from oem
07:48 AM JT-MShop: well you select a firmware then check if the board has the same firmware
07:50 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:58 AM rdtsc-w: i'll have to give that a try tonight... provided the 6.11.12 .iso boots (the 6.1.0-35 rpi5 .iso did not - that also did not have a [rpi5] section in the config.txt - I should probably let the forum (rodw) know about that)
08:10 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/vFU9GPVFdYWpwoP3A
08:13 AM rdtsc-w: she's lookin' drivable! :)
08:14 AM rdtsc-w: totalled-my-@#$%
08:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> probabaly change the oil while it is on the lift.. but - yes
08:14 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> other than I have to find the year sticker for the licence plate 🙂
08:15 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> totalled how?
08:15 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> oh - lol. got it
08:15 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes. that was about 2500 in used parts.
08:16 AM rdtsc-w: that's really good... a shop would have charged a small fortune
08:16 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> still way cheaper than getting a car about the same..
08:17 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (but I also fixed damage caused by my stupidity backing into the 42 pickup - so it would have been less to fix t he deer damage)
08:18 AM rdtsc-w: we all have a boo-boo or two, keeps us humble :)
08:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> for a 2017 it doesn't look too bad under..
08:45 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (I figure it sat atleast 2 years after the first accident)
08:46 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> for the salt belt
10:57 AM JT-Shop: where's the wheely bars?
11:01 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i was looking over the file edit stuff a bit.. how to enable the flex editor?
11:02 AM Tom_L: i left some notes too
11:48 AM roycroft: well how strange
11:48 AM roycroft: i was having issues with the pump not working on my espresso machine yesterday, and having spent a couple hours on the rebuild i put it away for the day
11:49 AM roycroft: i could get no hot water through the group head nor any steam from the frothing wand
11:49 AM bjorkintosh: blockage?
11:49 AM roycroft: i just went out to reassess things, but turning it on and seeing what happened and, having not touched it since yesterday, it is now working fine
11:50 AM roycroft: yes, there was scale buildup and i had to disassemble and descale the boiler and all the other bits
11:50 AM roycroft: but prior to that work, the frothing wand was working, which is in indicator that the solenoid was blocked
11:51 AM roycroft: after the descaling/reassembly nothing worked, which is an indicator that the pump had failed
11:51 AM roycroft: but apparently not
11:51 AM * roycroft is having a mediocre cappuccino right now
11:52 AM roycroft: it's mediocre because the machine has been down for over a month, and i haven't purchased fresh beans since then, so the beans are quite old now
11:52 AM roycroft: i'll be in town tomorrow, and i'll definitely be stopping by the coffee roaster
11:54 AM roycroft: i have to say, though, that a mediocre cappuccino is still better than a good drip brew
12:17 PM xxcoder: probably needed time to hmm dry out? for descaler to finish on servo?
01:07 PM roycroft: the descaler is all gone
01:07 PM roycroft: i rinsed everything really well before reassembling - i did not want to be drinking any descaler
01:10 PM xxcoder: lol true
01:10 PM xxcoder: yeah dont know
01:11 PM roycroft: i'll chalk it up to one of life's mysteries
01:48 PM JT-Shop: https://ibb.co/PZnBp2R1
01:48 PM JT-Shop: twins I bet
02:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> awww.. I have been seeing a ton of turkeys around here lately
02:32 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the 2 auto parts places in this town didn't have a filter in stock for the vw
02:35 PM rdtsc-w: boy got a used beamer (bmw) last year... had to buy a M17 deepwell just to take the wheels off
03:10 PM xxcoder: etching glass with metal. interesting https://youtu.be/J0NNO91WyXM
03:10 PM xxcoder: using laser
03:13 PM xxcoder: roycroft: check that video out, since you got laser
04:18 PM xxcoder: hovercar rebuild. https://youtu.be/4u5RMY5tul4
04:19 PM xxcoder: theyre kinda stupid on safety but yeah
04:25 PM xxcoder: it crashed and broke some plastics and cracked quite a bit. they fixes it
04:43 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> looks like a Scat 2, the Scat 1 was better as it was fiberglass ( = repairable)
04:48 PM xxcoder: they used abs glue and some fiberglass to fix the hull
04:48 PM xxcoder: and abs sheets
04:48 PM xxcoder: they ran into problems in mountains, snow made zipties and holders too brittle so they lost some. they managed to ride it down to truck though
04:48 PM xxcoder: I'd have used stainless steel parts or something for those.
04:49 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> it needs to be cheap and easy to replace though
04:49 PM xxcoder: yeah. their plastic holders for ziplocs broke off too, so they couldnt repair it in field
04:52 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> wth, weather just said possible snow here tomorrow...
04:56 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i really need to get out to my shed and see if my machine still works... been sitting quite a while...
04:57 PM JT-Shop: kinda late in the year for snow in the north world
04:58 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i thought so
04:59 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i guess it is mostly high elevations, but i am foothills
05:00 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> hmmm, friday, not tomorrow. but still, late in the season
05:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It has been in the 40s here the last few days
05:15 PM roycroft: the sunshine is back here
05:20 PM xxcoder: sunny here also
05:27 PM roycroft: there's a chance of light rain later this evening and throughout much of tomorrow, but after that it warm and sunny for the indefinite future
05:27 PM roycroft: that will be great, as i need to tidy up behind my shop so i can get my blasting cabinet and store it there, which i hope to do this weekend
07:10 PM bjorkint0sh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHxtY6_zxZo
07:11 PM xxcoder: gonna love those classic videos
07:14 PM roycroft: i've cleaned up my controller frame sides after the glue-up
07:15 PM roycroft: now i have to decide how big the front and back metal panels need to be, if i'm even going to do a metal insert in the front, and figure out airflow for the cooling fan(s)
07:15 PM roycroft: then i can finish machining the sides and make the frame
07:17 PM xxcoder: video even have that vector graphics logo at end lol.
07:18 PM roycroft: something i really want to try some time, and i'm not sure if this would be a good project for that, is making a backlit glass panel for the front of a controller/device
07:19 PM xxcoder: for cnc machines?
07:19 PM roycroft: i'll have to think about that a bit
07:19 PM roycroft: for whatever
07:19 PM xxcoder: ok
07:20 PM roycroft: i like making really nice containers/cabinets/whatever for shop things because i get to learn new techniques that i can use on stuff for sale or for my house
07:20 PM roycroft: and this backlit glass idea has been in my head for decades
07:20 PM roycroft: i think mainly because mcintosh hifi gear does it, and i absolutely love the look of my mcintosh kit
07:21 PM xxcoder: im not too sure how to picture it
07:21 PM xxcoder: is it some decal thats glass, and have white backing and has scattered light across it so it glows?
07:21 PM roycroft: piece of glass
07:21 PM roycroft: on the back of it are some decals or other applications that are transparent, but colored
07:22 PM roycroft: the rest of the back of the glass is painted black
07:22 PM xxcoder: got examples? im failing to visualize it lol
07:22 PM roycroft: behind that is a piece of opaque white acrylic, with lamps installed behind the decals
07:23 PM xxcoder: oh yes did you see my link about etching metal into glass? I bet it might be cool, even if not trying to have circuit or anything on glass.
07:23 PM roycroft: https://www.mcintoshlabs.com/legacy-products/preamplifiers/C28
07:23 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omPt6U_8ws8
07:23 PM Tom_L: edge lit
07:23 PM roycroft: that's not my personal pre-amp, but i have a c-28
07:23 PM roycroft: yes
07:24 PM roycroft: and yes, i saw your link to the video on "evaporating" metal onto glass
07:24 PM roycroft: i watched a couple minutes of it, and will definitely watch the rest later on
07:24 PM xxcoder: hmm yeah thats definitely cool art style
07:24 PM xxcoder: (your and toms links)
07:25 PM roycroft: i really want to do it, but it may be a lot of trial and error
07:25 PM Tom_L: i did these up in a hurry but are back lit plastic tubing: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/itx/frontled1.JPG
07:26 PM roycroft: plus, i'm not really set up to drill and edge polish glass right now
07:26 PM roycroft: i have my stained glass grinder, but it's in one of the 150 or so boxes in storage
07:26 PM xxcoder: roy yeah. its prety cool, and I asked if gold foil would work for that lol
07:26 PM xxcoder: tom nice
07:26 PM roycroft: i'm just thinking that this project would be ideal, because the front panel will be very simple
07:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/itx/frontled4.JPG
07:27 PM xxcoder: slightly reminds me of old star trek indictors
07:27 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/itx/frontpannel1.JPG
07:28 PM roycroft: the front panel may be as simple as a key switch, e-stop button, and status lamps (neon, of course, not led, because neon :)
07:28 PM xxcoder: :)
07:28 PM Tom_L: age tell
07:28 PM xxcoder: age doxxed lol
07:29 PM roycroft: i think even youngsters would think neon indicators look cool, if they ever saw one
07:29 PM Tom_L: probably
07:30 PM roycroft: the age tell is that i actually know what they are :)
07:30 PM roycroft: i also need to design some vents for the fan(s)
07:30 PM Tom_L: admittedly so do i
07:31 PM bjorkint0sh: Tom_L: are you just a Tom of all trades, master of all or something like that?
07:31 PM roycroft: i want to route the vents directly into the frame pieces
07:31 PM Tom_L: just like to tinker
07:31 PM bjorkint0sh: modest.
07:31 PM roycroft: and since i have a shaper origin, they don't need to be a simple, boring array of straight slots
07:31 PM Tom_L: i've pretty much given up my electronic's hobby
07:31 PM bjorkint0sh: it seems this channel is filled with *_of all trades.
07:32 PM bjorkint0sh: as long as that trade exists.
07:32 PM Tom_L: not enough time for everything so i've somewhat limited it to cnc and machining
07:32 PM roycroft: yeah, there are a lot of folks here who are multi-talented
07:32 PM bjorkint0sh: it's a little unusual. most other channels of course are just nerds, but in a narrow domain.
07:32 PM Tom_L: still enjoyed it but time moves on
07:33 PM roycroft: i think a channel about homebrew cnc machines (of all sorts) attracts folks like that
07:33 PM roycroft: even if all our discussions were strictly on-topic
07:33 PM bjorkint0sh: they absolutely are always absolutely on topic.
07:33 PM xxcoder: many here dont just have cnc hobby, they have cncs to supply stuff for their hobbies
07:33 PM Tom_L: still have a paperback of the 'pink' books for 68hc11 if you even know what those are
07:33 PM xxcoder: and theres tons of different hobbies
07:34 PM bjorkint0sh: never used those.
07:34 PM Tom_L: back when data sheets were printed
07:34 PM roycroft: cnc mill, cnc metal lathe, cnc plasma cutter, cnc robot arms for industrial operations, cnc embroidery machines, cnc chemical plant operations, cnc cake decorating ...
07:34 PM roycroft: there are thousands of cnc operations, and linuxcnc can do them all
07:35 PM bjorkint0sh: yes. it's a way to control servos with great precision.
07:35 PM roycroft: it would be fun to build a frictionless cnc machine
07:36 PM bjorkint0sh: with a thin layer of oil?
07:36 PM roycroft: no, i said frictionless, not low friction
07:36 PM roycroft: magnets in a vacuum
07:36 PM bjorkint0sh: so air instead?
07:36 PM bjorkint0sh: oh.
07:36 PM bjorkint0sh: interesting.
07:37 PM xxcoder: air bearings?
07:37 PM roycroft: air has friction
07:37 PM bjorkint0sh: yes. it's a fluid.
07:37 PM bjorkint0sh: it's pretty low though!
07:37 PM xxcoder: yeah. air bearings can spin for quite long time
07:37 PM bjorkint0sh: does such a thing as a frictionless machine exist already?
07:37 PM Tom_L: don't they do that in observatories?
07:38 PM Tom_L: float the bearing surface
07:38 PM bjorkint0sh: right bullet trains too
07:38 PM xxcoder: CMMs at my old job used air bearings for super precision and smooth movement
07:38 PM xxcoder: I know it, because they had rebuilt one
07:38 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig38LXSaerE
07:38 PM roycroft: inspired by xxcoder's comment, but unfortunately not for him, since it's a song with no subtitles :(
07:39 PM xxcoder: lol
07:39 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/CCM.jpg
07:39 PM Tom_L: tiny cmm
07:39 PM roycroft: oh wait
07:39 PM roycroft: there are subtitles!
07:39 PM xxcoder: I remember that one lol
07:39 PM roycroft: just not cc
07:39 PM xxcoder: very large indeed
07:39 PM roycroft: well, there are a few subtitles
07:39 PM roycroft: maybe i can find a version with all the lyrics
07:40 PM xxcoder: nah dont need to do the work
07:41 PM xxcoder: anyway that rebuild was to replace all air bearings and to recalbrate it. it was getting close to runtime rate max for certification
07:41 PM bjorkint0sh: now that I think of it, I've thought about the ultimate record player: one that is held up and spun by electromagnetic forces.
07:41 PM xxcoder: same as those levation ones? I think I remmber seeing one in yt
07:41 PM roycroft: the ultimate record player already exists - it uses a laser beam to read the grooves, so zero wear
07:41 PM bjorkint0sh: well it turned out it already existed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1v4zMYTk8Q
07:42 PM Tom_L: leave that to mcintosh or somebody like that to invent one
07:42 PM bjorkint0sh: roycroft: their flaw is that they don't work with transparent records.
07:42 PM roycroft: music archivists actually invented the laser record player to try to get archival copies from really old records that would probably be destroyed by a needle
07:43 PM roycroft: well, i don't know that they invented it, but they wrote the basic specs for it and had it engineered, at least
07:43 PM xxcoder: yeah and finally played thpose wax records too
07:47 PM roycroft: new yorkshire workshop guy made a video a few years ago of a cabinet build for a £10,000 turntable
07:48 PM roycroft: and that was, i believe, the cost of just the turntable, not including the fancy base he built for it
07:49 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKFQ8B4cx64
07:49 PM roycroft: sorry, i was wrong
07:49 PM roycroft: it's a £13,000 turntable,not £10,000
07:49 PM roycroft: i don't mean to imply he would work on cheap stuff
07:51 PM bjorkint0sh: goodness. that looks fancy as all hell!
07:54 PM bjorkint0sh: the damned tone arm alone is $7,600!
07:54 PM roycroft: it is massive, which is what one wants in a turntable
07:55 PM roycroft: the funny thing is, when was working at the high-end hifi shop back in the '70s, garrard were the cheap consumer grade turntables that we did not like to sell
07:56 PM roycroft: they were making some pro turntables at the time, but most of their stuff was crappy consumer grade
07:59 PM roycroft: new yorkshire workshop is one of the best channels on teh youtube
07:59 PM roycroft: it's up there with clickspring
08:00 PM xxcoder: I love that channel also
08:00 PM Tom_L: that drill is a bit fast for that wheel
08:00 PM xxcoder: heyy that video, I didnt watch
08:00 PM xxcoder: no cnc router yet
08:01 PM Tom_L: we used to use a milwaukee angle grinder with a 15" wheel
08:03 PM roycroft: then there was the video i started watching the other day
08:03 PM roycroft: the guy was a "furniture restorer", and was trying to salvage an old art deco piece
08:04 PM roycroft: i started getting annoyed when he took apart the breadboard top and then reassembled it by gluing the entire length of the breadboard ends on to the top, cross grain
08:04 PM roycroft: a bit later he was making some kind of a lift, i forget the details, and decided to use a vise screw for the mechanism, but he needed to grind it a bit
08:05 PM roycroft: he started grinding, and noticed that the screw was sparking when grinding, but the nut was not
08:05 PM Leeloo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2OaQjN0Z4g
08:05 PM roycroft: he thought that odd, but surmised that forging metal makes it spark, and casting metal does not
08:05 PM Leeloo: Sorry. wrong window
08:05 PM * roycroft exited the video at that point
08:06 PM xxcoder: that guy sounds very careless. not channel I would like tp watch
08:06 PM xxcoder: like that hovercar one. video was fun, but I didnt sub due to all that careless
08:07 PM roycroft: i am perfectly fine with people not knowing things
08:07 PM roycroft: there are orders of magnitude more things i don't know than i do know
08:07 PM roycroft: i'm not fine with people making videos about things they don't know
08:08 PM xxcoder: im ok with guy trying to learn something new, as long as they tell people they dont know and stuff they do may be wrong
08:08 PM Tom_L: i tend to not watch facetime videos
08:08 PM bjorkint0sh: it's all for the likes.
08:08 PM roycroft: so that guy, whoever it is, does not go on the new yorkshire workshop/clickspring list
08:08 PM Tom_L: awww
08:09 PM bjorkint0sh: ah clickspring. Yes.
08:10 PM roycroft: i just hope that, should i run across any more of his videos, i recognize him before i invest any time watchint the video
08:10 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/6ixMySzCbzf3epEY8
08:10 PM roycroft: that is by no means an exhaustive list, bjorkint0sh
08:10 PM Tom_L: omg somebody stole your car
08:10 PM roycroft: just a couple examples of excellent youtube content makers
08:11 PM bjorkint0sh: roycroft: no doubt.
08:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/MGhNZmeoYgiSaFBs7
08:11 PM Tom_L: even gave it a bath
08:11 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Brakes are a little chunky
08:11 PM xxcoder: wow shop got robbed
08:12 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Backing it out was a pain
08:18 PM * roycroft decides it's time to make dinner
08:22 PM xxcoder: just had mine lol. burritos and cheese. not exactly complex\
08:22 PM xxcoder: the remaining sour cream bottle I have is still good thankfully
08:25 PM xxcoder: man that player creation is insane
08:44 PM xxcoder: yeah then it just keeps going into more insane
08:45 PM xxcoder: massive amount of work. thanks for link roy
08:46 PM roycroft: that's one of my favorite videos of his
08:46 PM xxcoder: im subbed to channel, but didnt watch all videos
08:46 PM roycroft: and he's obviously set up to make those bases on demand
08:47 PM roycroft: which makes sense, because in the early '60s, the bbc bought heaps of garrard 301s for their radio stations all over the uk
08:47 PM roycroft: so there are a lot for collectors
08:48 PM roycroft: but they are really industrial looking, and high end collectors want it to look like furniture
08:48 PM xxcoder: it may be utterly useless thing for me, but I love to watch skilled worker
08:52 PM rdtsc: hmm... put 6.11.12 onto sd card, seemed to have worked fine, but config.txt is unread/writeable
09:33 PM xxcoder: roy interesting on those players though.
09:38 PM bjorkint0sh: SD cards are unreliable it seems.
09:48 PM rdtsc: repartitioned it, tried again, seems fine now... weird.
09:49 PM roycroft: sounds like an sd card
09:49 PM roycroft: they were not invented during einstein's time on earth
09:56 PM roycroft: do any canadians other than oddball televison presenters actually pronounce "asphalt" as "ashphalt"?
09:56 PM roycroft: i've heard them refer to it as bitumen, but never "ashphalt"
11:41 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
