#linuxcnc Calendar

12:55 AM Deejay: moin
03:17 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
03:42 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
06:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:01 AM lcnc-relay: <snitty@> Good morning.
08:08 AM * JT-Cave gives up trying to use a rip of master just too much dependency hell
09:58 AM * JT-Shop wonders why for the last few years there have been millions of bug fixes for emc...
10:02 AM JT-Shop: are they just introducing bug after bug?
10:04 AM Tom_L: seems they're not quite as careful as they used to be
10:29 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: I think there used to be more review of stuff prior to pushing it.
10:29 AM JT-Shop: yup
10:31 AM Tom_L: is it true linuxcnc dropped out of mainstream?
10:32 AM Tom_L: google ai says it's still in
10:32 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I think it is still in.
10:33 AM Tom_L: i thought it was on the chopping block there for a bit
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Shop: on my ride Wednesday, I was behind a nice Vette at a light.... I think it was a late 60's or early 70's. could sorta tell by the bumpers... very nice, black, good condition, a real rumbler.
10:47 AM C3-Shop: yup 68-72 had chrome bumpers
10:47 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> It had those
10:48 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> it was really nide
10:48 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> nice
10:57 AM JT-Shop: usually nice looking older corvettes have had a frame off restoration
10:59 AM bjorkintosh: you know what I don't understand (speaking of ancient cars)... '55 thunderbird carburetors.
10:59 AM bjorkintosh: why are they so crappy?
11:03 AM Tom_L: ai has an answer
11:04 AM Tom_L: their complexity, susceptibility to fouling, and the tendency for their rubber components to degrade over time
11:04 AM Tom_L: especially the holley 4000
11:11 AM Tom_L: in 50 yrs will there be discussions of how cool my old '25 electric car was?
11:11 AM bjorkintosh: hahah. if it still exists.
11:14 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: very doubtful
11:14 AM * JT-Shop takes a break for a nap and the distributor clamp search resumes
11:43 AM xxcoder: "I miss days when evs dont beam ads to your eyes while I drive"
11:45 AM xxcoder: good morning
11:48 AM xxcoder: woke up to cold home lol. 62f. I forgot to turn off ac and turn small heater on before going to bed
12:06 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
12:06 PM Unterhausen: I guess web developers are using an adblocker detector that doesn't like privacy badger
12:06 PM Unterhausen: never thought that was an ad blocker, it's more of a malware blocker
12:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we had an international dumptruck with a 400somethingCI engine.. holly 4 barrel. When we go the truck - it ran but used a crazy amount of fuel. Finally overhauled it and boy.. I think everything was plugged and the seals were all bad.
12:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> after the overhaul - it ran really nice.
12:52 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I guess the 42 has been running nice after the rochester carb overhaul..
12:53 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> pump the accelerator once - starts right up
12:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> still needs a pedal.. driving it by pusing on the shaft sticking through the hole in the floor board..
01:17 PM infornography: is there a pendant that is pug and play with linux cnc?
01:24 PM JT-Shop: https://mesaus.com/product/7i73/
01:25 PM JT-Shop: that's about as plug and play you can get if you have a Mesa board with a Smart Serial port
01:28 PM infornography: ty
01:31 PM infornography: not exactly what I had in mind
01:34 PM infornography: I thought maybe now there would be something plug and play, the last time I messed with one it took a lot of tweaking and not all the buttons worked
01:36 PM infornography: 🤔️ maybe that is something I should work on
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> do you mean a jog pendant?
01:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I honestly don't know what is out there now..
01:41 PM infornography: yeah, something beside the keyboard
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> are you a diy'er?
01:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://github.com/Stutchbury/Manualmatic-Pendant
01:43 PM JT-Shop: you have to plug any interface into something to get the inputs into linuxcnc
01:44 PM infornography: nice thanks
01:49 PM JT-Shop: plugs are gapped now to put them in
01:52 PM infornography: bll
02:02 PM JT-Shop: even plugs are in and they are supposed to be the hard ones
02:30 PM Tom_L: that thing has alot of buttons on it
02:30 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, did you do a compression test while you had em out?
02:37 PM JT-Shop: no, I assume it's not up to par and I plan on rebuilding the engine this fall
02:37 PM JT-Shop: odd plugs are in... now to figure out plug wire routing as none of the original wire things are there
02:38 PM Tom_L: sounded like you may need some shorter ones on some
02:39 PM JT-Shop: yup a couple of them were long enough to reach the headlights almost
02:39 PM Tom_L: you wouldn't have to flash your headlights at ppl that way
02:47 PM Tom_L: nap seems to be in order
03:07 PM xxcoder: roycroft: https://youtu.be/zW5nZ0Hp95k interesting. using old toy type to make nice table
03:07 PM xxcoder: epoxy tho
03:11 PM JT-Shop: never a bad time for a nap
03:11 PM xxcoder: except for me. its ALWAYS bad time for a nap
03:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I sold something on ebay - it says it is going to my bank account. I have used this before - like a few years ago. But the last 4 didget of the account don't seem to really match anything.. lol
03:32 PM JT-Shop: the last 4 digits are usually the check number
03:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I figured it was the routhing number.. but it doesn't match - but it must have worked before - time will tell
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think this is going to work great...
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> 532656
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol
03:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/EtjrBKqjiALQZ8wg9
03:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> and give me room to put all the welding/plasma in that corner
03:37 PM Tom_L: good those are one time use verification codes
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Tom_L: exactly...
03:37 PM Tom_L: been there done that
03:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> better than a password.. (which I have done)
03:38 PM Tom_L: fwiw.. you've been verified
03:39 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I have!
03:39 PM Tom_L: yes, you are in fact... you
03:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> btw - the central vaccum that my parents had in the house for 2 seconds was here in the polebuilding..
03:40 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It is a great mouse trap.. It had atleast 4 that I could make out - and a slury of mouse parts...
03:43 PM Tom_L: heh is that why they took it out?
03:51 PM * JT-Shop goes to see if the battery is charged enough to attempt to start the C3
03:51 PM JT-Shop: for some reason even with the battery tender on the battery was totally discharged
03:51 PM JT-Shop: I need to get a Ctek tender for it
03:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> no - they never used it. Dad had mounted it - but just had a long vaccum hose - because the house was never setup for central vac
03:57 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> he probably found a good deal on it - most likely
04:11 PM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> my odrive now have power and temperature feedback 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8M65LrQPhQ
04:13 PM JT-Shop: hmm the power steering belt is correct
04:22 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/VZ5MuEePbNzRUy4RA
04:23 PM JT-Shop: and the alternator belt might be the correct one but the AC belt is wront
04:23 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Except I don't have a 110 outlet in that corner...
04:24 PM JT-Shop: so the belt I have is 1" short no wonder it's hard to get on...
04:27 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Is it the stretch style? No tentioner?
04:33 PM roycroft: i am back home
04:34 PM roycroft: with a big wad o' cash, and no longer a volkswagen owner
04:34 PM xxcoder: welcome back.
04:34 PM roycroft: and as the buses were being hauled away i realized why i still had them - this is now the first time in 45 years or so that i've not owned a volkswagen
04:35 PM roycroft: i'm pretty sure i kept the buses so long for sentimental reasons
04:35 PM roycroft: but i'm being realistic now, and the cash will go a long ways toward my shop extension
04:35 PM roycroft: and now i don't have to figure out where to park two extra vehicles on my fairly small property
04:36 PM roycroft: all in all it's been a good day so far, but i'm pooped from the trip and walking around with the new owner
04:37 PM roycroft: what's funny is that when we were haggling over price, the guy seemed totally disinterested in the other stuff i was bundling, like the porsche fuel injection systems and the gas heaters and stuff
04:38 PM roycroft: but when he got the stuff today he scoured every outbuilding and every bit of the property for anything vw-related and made sure he got it all
04:38 PM roycroft: i was sure when we were haggling that he knew what i had and what its value is, but he had a good poker face
04:40 PM * roycroft is tired, but also feels layers of stress floating away, now that the buses are gone
04:45 PM roycroft: i got the little cnc mill out last night and untangled all the wires
04:46 PM roycroft: i think i'm about able to climb up a step stool to get the controller hardware down off the shelf, so hopefully i'll make progress on that pretty soon
04:47 PM * roycroft feels a nap approaching soon, though, and is likely not going to wander back to the studio to work on that project for a bit
04:47 PM rdtsc: cirkey, be careful
04:47 PM rdtsc: *crikey
04:48 PM roycroft: absolutely
04:48 PM roycroft: if i do not feel totally comfortable doing it i won't do it
04:48 PM roycroft: i have zero interest in negative progress
04:48 PM roycroft: new yorkshire workshop just posted a new video
04:49 PM roycroft: renovating and restoring century and a half old cupboard doors
04:49 PM xxcoder: yep. it was amazing'
04:49 PM roycroft: his always are
04:49 PM xxcoder: did you see my link? while its epoxy table, its not a river, and pretty cool way to make a pattern
04:49 PM roycroft: no
04:49 PM roycroft: repost please
04:49 PM xxcoder: roycroft: https://youtu.be/zW5nZ0Hp95k interesting. using old toy type to make nice table
04:50 PM roycroft: unless it's the spirograph one
04:50 PM xxcoder: it is
04:50 PM roycroft: i saw a couple minutes of that
04:50 PM roycroft: neat technique
04:50 PM roycroft: not my thing though
04:50 PM xxcoder: yeah that part is what I wanted you to see. the epoxy parts dont matter
04:51 PM xxcoder: would be cool if postive wood could be made, so its wood-woodinlay, rather than epoxy.
04:51 PM xxcoder: probably need cnc for that
04:51 PM roycroft: well, cnc would help in making the spirograph gears
04:51 PM roycroft: but once you have the gear set you can route it manually
04:52 PM roycroft: so i have to wait for the hospital bills to come in, but if they are what i expect them to be, i already have the money for that in a savings account that i fund for medical expenses
04:53 PM roycroft: in which case i think i have enough money to build the shop extension after today
04:53 PM xxcoder: yeah? how would gear create postive side?
04:53 PM roycroft: but only if i build it myself, and i'm not up to that at the moment
04:54 PM roycroft: i did not watch the whole video, so maybe he did something else that i did not see
04:54 PM roycroft: if i get a chance i'll watch the whole thing
04:54 PM xxcoder: nah just grooves then epoxy. base is cool
04:54 PM roycroft: i watch lots of videos where i'm not into the aesthetic at all, but i learn from the process
04:54 PM xxcoder: I was wondering about making inverse version so it would have awesome wood inlays rather than epoxy
04:55 PM xxcoder: I suppose it could be done in sections rather than whole thing
05:13 PM roycroft: yikes
05:14 PM roycroft: i'd like some skylights in my new shop roof, but they are expensive
05:14 PM xxcoder: you'd probably have much easier time, and cheaper, making your own
05:14 PM roycroft: i'll design to accomodate them, and maybe get a couple when i build the new roof, and add more later
05:14 PM roycroft: possibly
05:15 PM xxcoder: the rised glass type
05:15 PM xxcoder: not fancy curvy one
05:15 PM roycroft: i want vented ones, and i don't want them to leak
05:15 PM roycroft: yeah, i don't want or need curved ones
05:15 PM roycroft: flat glass is fine
05:15 PM roycroft: i'd need to rig some kind of shades for them that i can operate remotely
05:16 PM xxcoder: fancy linear actuator and nice blackout sheets?
05:16 PM roycroft: as simple as possible
05:16 PM xxcoder: or sinmple stepper
05:16 PM roycroft: chains/pull strings would be fine if that's what works
05:18 PM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/-bClvnnOnnU?t=585
05:18 PM JT-Shop: I learned that technique from a video of an old Russian who built baths for babies
05:19 PM JT-Shop: except he did the seal a bit different without the cotton
05:19 PM xxcoder: roy https://www.sunsquare.co.uk/blog/what-is-an-upstand/ is what im picturing in mind
05:19 PM xxcoder: should be easy-ish to waterproof
05:19 PM xxcoder: and you have huge space to install blinds or whatever sun blocking stuff
05:22 PM roycroft: matt cremona is finally working on his bridgeport mill
05:22 PM roycroft: he disassembled it years ago and it's been in that state all those years
05:22 PM xxcoder: watching artisan make, hes finishing off the plane
05:25 PM xxcoder: did you see sunsquare link roy?
05:54 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf@> is it possible to use a stepgen along with a spinx card to generate 0-10v analog? How complex would that be for a HAL/INI newbie? I have a 7i96s (I think) and I want to add a second spindle, ideally without ordering a new card / addon
05:58 PM JT-Shop: you need a pwm for the spinx not stepgen
05:59 PM JT-Shop: everything is easy once you know how...
06:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Lol.. I agree with that statement
06:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf@> but isnt there like a firmware you can use to get a second pwn out of a stepgen?
06:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf@> maybe i am confusing myself haha - sounds like an addon card might be easier?
06:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Yes.. you will probably need a firmware. Peter would be the one to ask
06:02 PM JT-Shop: just checking by running the Mesa Configuration Tool and I don't see a 7i96s with a pwm
06:03 PM JT-Shop: and I agree that is a Peter question
06:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Yah. I would put the pwm pins on the second port.
06:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (the expansion connector)
06:06 PM JT-Shop: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/10-advanced-configuration/48801-mesa-7i96s-pwm-outputs
06:08 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:20 PM Tom_L: been a rainy one here most of the day
06:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> sunny here.. mostly
06:26 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/4zhrMe26zL4bqaC69
06:29 PM Tom_L: quite a welder collection
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that is only maybe 1/2 if it - and I still don't have a tig.
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I found a buzz box with the big crank on the top to change the core location... dad must have been working on at some point..
06:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/BAxdQs5zNPADKdgh6
06:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I really think that is going to be turned into copper...
06:46 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ugh.. well - keep or not to keep
06:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/58iuXYg6Vk8ejHFM8
06:51 PM bjorkintosh: that must weight a tonne or more!
06:52 PM xxcoder: very heavy. if it fell ove into you, you hope you got lucky and died right away, or just one limb or something
06:52 PM pcw-home: 7i96s_2pwmd.bin replaces the last stepgen step output with a PWMGen
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think it would be too big to put on the shaper...
06:55 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> ffffrf@ Peter has joined the chat.. ^^^
06:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it would sit on the k&t... for doing some odd jobs.. I guess
08:06 PM rdtsc: heheh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz59e1wWyVc
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf@> cool i found the 2 pwm firmware and downloaded it - thank you!!
08:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf@> now to figure out live lath tool control 🤣
08:50 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> good luck.. Don't be afraid of hal. It is super powerful once you wrap your head around it.
08:51 PM Tom_L: don't be afraid to ask either
08:58 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wait - I thought we were a$$holes around here.
08:58 PM xxcoder: meh everyone has one
09:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I know it doesn't look like much - but that is actual floor space...
09:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/WLPt3iEN7GjwhnoP8
09:01 PM roycroft: having watched alex steele make a bollocks dagger out of some "willie" damascus, it's time for blondihacks
09:01 PM xxcoder: spoiler: good video!
09:01 PM roycroft: they all have been of late
09:02 PM xxcoder: yeah I only rarely skip videos
09:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I enjoy blondihacks.. I wonder though how much her 'mistakes' are actual mistakes..
09:02 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It almost seems like she is trying to really push that it is ok to make mistakes..
09:03 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (which is ok)
09:03 PM roycroft: well it is
09:03 PM roycroft: mistakes are great learning tools
09:03 PM roycroft: and everyone makes them
09:04 PM xxcoder: yeah. I dislike channel that hide em. I saw one where guy made a mistake and it was olvious, then he cuts "same part" but without mistake
09:04 PM xxcoder: never was said
09:04 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol - I should post a video of me creating a hal file from scratch..
09:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> why didn't that work? oh - I forgot this.. oops.. that was the wrong pin hooked up...
09:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> clown music playing in the back ground...
09:05 PM xxcoder: lol
09:06 PM roycroft: i haven't decided on my approach when i finally get my mini-router going
09:06 PM xxcoder: if I did it, people would mistake mine for spoof
09:06 PM roycroft: i see lots of folks wire up the whole machine then start testing
09:06 PM roycroft: my general approach would be more to configure one thing at a time and test it before moving on to the next
09:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> The k&t was tested as sub-systems.. it really broke it up and you can see your progress... Servos are hooked up and working.. VFD is hooked in and now to work on spindle gearbox. that is working. Now the tool changer.. and so on..
09:08 PM xxcoder: I wired everything but the spindle and tested em lol
09:08 PM xxcoder: spindle that time was crappy green edge router.
09:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> And - I am pretty sure we got each servo hooked up and tested individually.. Because I rememeber doing and X-Z circle when we go Z finally running..
09:17 PM roycroft: so my approach is not necessarly a bad one
09:17 PM xxcoder: not at all.
09:18 PM roycroft: quinn must have just rewatched the big lebowski
11:46 PM firephoto__ is now known as firephoto_
11:54 PM Tom_L: roycroft, you were wondering about programming a tapered cutter: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/15_deg_cutter.jpg
11:55 PM Tom_L: i picked a spot on it (probably the top or bottom) and used that as the cutter diameter
11:55 PM Tom_L: relief angle for a casting i did a part for
