12:56 AM Deejay: moin
04:22 AM Deejay: made a drawer inlay for all my clamping stuff:
04:22 AM Deejay: empty: https://quadrokopter.net/temp/optimum_spannmittel_leer.jpg
04:22 AM Deejay: and with every part at its place: https://quadrokopter.net/temp/optimum_spannmittel_voll.jpg
04:23 AM Deejay: satisfying when everything fits as intended :)
04:23 AM Deejay: (this is the clamping stuff for my 'wrong foo', not for my cnc)
04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
04:25 AM Deejay: hey tom
04:25 AM Tom_L: nice job
04:26 AM Deejay: thanks :)
04:43 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> Morning
05:12 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> had 13 deer cross by the camera this morning... forgot to snap a screen shot, but was fun to watch 🙂
06:25 AM JT-Chicken: most I've seen at the feeder is 10
06:32 AM JT-Chicken: got 2 deer and a bunny under the carport eating breakfast
07:08 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:20 AM Deejay: we have some deer coming into our garden, they like to eat the fresh bloom of the flowers. worrying my mother
07:49 AM JT-Cave: https://pasteboard.co/7NQRCpExetd1.png
08:05 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:31 AM roycroft: it is friday
09:35 AM bjorkint0sh: Good friday.
09:37 AM roycroft: that remains to be seen
09:38 AM roycroft: i did not sleep well last night, and i'm getting some feeling in my back where the incision was made
09:39 AM roycroft: that feeling is "itch"
09:39 AM bjorkint0sh: will a heating pad help?
09:39 AM roycroft: a hot shower will
09:39 AM roycroft: which is forthcoming
09:42 AM JT-Shop: the cross people are out today
09:42 AM bjorkint0sh: Ramen.
10:08 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:09 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> JT, i put a sign on the door, "No Soliciting, be it sales, political, religious!" works quite well
10:09 AM roycroft: it doesn't work for me, sadly
10:10 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> then your "cross people" can't read 😉
10:10 AM roycroft: they can
10:10 AM roycroft: but they think their righteousness outweighs my privacy rights and sovereignty over my property
10:11 AM roycroft: they can read but they cannot think rationally
10:11 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> I just don't answer the door. I have cameras though so I know if it is someone I want to talk to.
10:12 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> same here, zinc
10:13 AM roycroft: surveillance cameras are on my list to install
10:13 AM roycroft: i have a few other home automation devices to add first, though
10:13 AM roycroft: i want all the lights inside my house to be on the automation system
10:14 AM roycroft: and i'm not quite there yet
10:17 AM JT-Shop: these cross people stand by the side of the road with giant pvc crosses
10:17 AM bjorkint0sh: oh it's a much lighter cross to bear.
10:18 AM roycroft: while i don't like it, they are within their rights to promote their cult while on public property, and may stand just off my property if they wish
10:18 AM roycroft: but they have no right to take a single step onto my property, and if they do so persistently, i would not hesitate to have them trespassed
10:18 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> wth, JT, do you run a devil warship there or something? 😉
10:19 AM bjorkint0sh: c'mon travis. that's a bit extreme.
10:19 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i was joking...
10:19 AM roycroft: possibly worse, travis_farmer
10:19 AM roycroft: jt may be a roman catholic
10:19 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> 😱
10:19 AM bjorkint0sh: they love processions.
10:19 AM bjorkint0sh: (and crosses)
10:19 AM roycroft: that's the quickest way to get rid of the jw folks
10:20 AM roycroft: pull out a rosary and start saying hail marys
10:20 AM bjorkint0sh: hahaha
10:20 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> lol
10:21 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> i am Autistic, so most religions find me to be evil anyway 🤣
10:21 AM bjorkint0sh: well that's a shame. I doubt they think so though.
10:21 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> a lot do
10:22 AM roycroft: but in honesty and fairness
10:22 AM roycroft: i think those folks are kind of nutty
10:23 AM roycroft: but they do have a first amendment right to be nutty
10:23 AM bjorkint0sh: travis_farmer, just build a multi-storey labyrinth like this guy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9i2vmFhSSY
10:23 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer@> yeah, selling religion, door to door
10:23 AM roycroft: and as long as their nuttiness doesn't directly affect me or harm people i respect that right
10:34 AM rdtsc-w: yeah, some people decide to build a two-ton CNC machine in their basement... I mean, how crazy are they? :)
10:34 AM bjorkint0sh: rdtsc-w: this is a safe space.
10:34 AM bjorkint0sh: you're not crazy
10:35 AM bjorkint0sh: we think you should build ANOTHER one to keep the first one warm.
10:49 AM roycroft: so here we go
10:49 AM roycroft: i'm up against a hard deadline to move our mail server
10:49 AM roycroft: and my boss knows that
10:50 AM roycroft: i'm busting my butt to get it done
10:50 AM roycroft: he just started emailing me a stream of messages about billing anomolies and is demanding that i drop what i'm doing to answer them
10:50 AM roycroft: 1. i am busy working on the new mail server
10:50 AM roycroft: 2. i have nothing to do with billing and am completely unqualified to answer any of his questions
10:51 AM roycroft: 3. leave me the f*** alone so i can do my job :)
10:51 AM bjorkint0sh: what kind of server do you use, if it's not an NDA sorta thing?
10:52 AM roycroft: debian for almost everything
10:52 AM roycroft: for the hardware, we lease raw iron from various data centers
10:52 AM bjorkint0sh: sendmail then?
10:52 AM roycroft: postfix
10:52 AM bjorkint0sh: ah I see.
10:53 AM roycroft: and i'm not even on the main mail server yet
10:53 AM bjorkint0sh: that alone is someone's entire job description.
10:53 AM roycroft: we have customers who subscribe to email archving
10:53 AM roycroft: but we don't have an exchange server
10:53 AM roycroft: as a result, the only way to capture their outbound messages and import them into the archive server is to send a bcc to another server, and have the archive service retrieve them from there
10:54 AM roycroft: this functionality is built into exchange, but not anything else
10:54 AM roycroft: so i'm building the archive relay server now
10:54 AM roycroft: and i'll build the main mail server when that's done
10:56 AM roycroft: the archive service retains immutable archives for 10 years that are admissible in court
10:57 AM bjorkint0sh: 10 years.
10:57 AM bjorkint0sh: goodness. what happens if you and your boss win the lottery? who maintains all that?
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Wait, postfix can't do a "transport rule"?
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Good lord
11:05 AM JT-Cave: https://lansingmachine.com/brand/mesa-electronics/
11:05 AM JT-Cave: lots of mesa boards up for grabs
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Sad face, saw Lansing in the name, assumed it was in Michigan, /sigh
11:15 AM roycroft: it's the archive server that's the issue
11:15 AM roycroft: it won't retrieve the outbound messages from the same mail server that accepts inbound
11:15 AM roycroft: unless it does whatever magic/kludge exchange does
11:16 AM bjorkint0sh: archive server is also procmail?
11:16 AM bjorkint0sh: *postfix
11:16 AM bjorkint0sh: goodness, where did procmail come from?
11:16 AM roycroft: bjorkint0sh: the archive can be transferred to another provider
11:16 AM roycroft: procmail came from germany
11:16 AM roycroft: and i have no idea what the archive server is - it's a third-party service to which we subscribe
11:16 AM bjorkint0sh: I'm not sure why I typed it in there instead of postfix.
11:17 AM roycroft: postfix came from minnesota
11:17 AM roycroft: it was written by an ibm employee
11:34 AM roycroft: btw, i used sendmail since its inception until a few years ago when i switched to postfix
11:34 AM roycroft: it was the early to mid '80s when i started using it
11:35 AM roycroft: my first smtp server - it was uucp before that
12:03 PM JT-Shop: you need to tell them you are highly contagious and if they don't leave they will get schistosomiasis
12:04 PM roycroft: that ilk think they can pray the disease away
12:05 PM roycroft: and if they die of it it's god's will
12:05 PM roycroft: i've always had issues with fatalism, and most religions seem to be based on that
12:06 PM roycroft: i'm much more a free-will and take responsibilities for one's own actions kind of guy
12:12 PM xxcoder: 3d printer with coolant lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8WIoQfOqlo
01:17 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnUYLvDSdto
01:18 PM roycroft: removing an ancient drag line logging crane that has not moved in decades
01:18 PM roycroft: my moving challenges pale in comparison
01:22 PM xxcoder: dang lol
01:35 PM xxcoder: interesting indeed
01:39 PM xxcoder: too bad really that it was just too dead
01:40 PM xxcoder: main drive gear was way too shot
01:44 PM roycroft: they had fun pulling it out though
01:44 PM roycroft: and probably a lot of fun cutting it up
01:45 PM roycroft: lunch time
01:46 PM roycroft: which means more raised lettering routing time
01:46 PM xxcoder: yum yummy wood chips ;)
01:46 PM roycroft: i'm about 2/3 done with that project, and want to finish it asap so i can use my bench for other stuff
02:45 PM roycroft: the biggest drawback of the shaper origin from what i've determined so far is that the automatic z-touchoff is not terribly accurate nor repeatable for small diameter cutters
02:45 PM roycroft: that seems to be the source of all my problems
02:45 PM roycroft: i can touch off manually, though, and i should probably try that soon
03:18 PM JT-Shop: yay it's the weekend
03:18 PM xxcoder: 🎉
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Would it be better to touch off on a piece of shimstock?
03:19 PM roycroft: yes
03:19 PM roycroft: i'm already not touching off on the part, because it's wood
03:19 PM roycroft: i'm touching off on the fiduciary grid on the shaper workstation
03:19 PM roycroft: but even that's a little soft
03:20 PM roycroft: i could touch off manually using a piece of paper
03:20 PM roycroft: but shimstock would actually work really well, as i could do an auto-touch for every cutter, and touch all of them off on the shim stock
03:20 PM roycroft: and if depth of cut were really critical i could add the thickness of the shim stock to the cutting depth
03:21 PM roycroft: for what i'm doing, 0.005 difference in depth is not a big deal, as long as it is consistent with all the cutters
03:21 PM xxcoder: wonder if you could build "touchoff station"
03:22 PM roycroft: i probably could, but there's no mechanism to set a z offset from touchoff
03:22 PM roycroft: that all has to be done by adjusting depth of cut
03:22 PM roycroft: at least i think i've identifie the source of my problem
03:23 PM roycroft: i was on the road yesteray during the shaper session on raised lettering
03:23 PM roycroft: it usually takes them a day or two to post the session to youtube after the live stream, so before i do anything else i think i'll wait to watch that to see if they have a clever way of dealing with it
03:24 PM roycroft: or if they even adress it - sometimes shaper sessions are useful and they make refined parts, and sometimes they are pretty crude
03:25 PM JT-Shop: harmonic balancer is back on... now to clean the pulley and put it back on
04:00 PM roycroft: god, i hate libera bot spam
04:00 PM xxcoder: dont think its a bot
04:00 PM roycroft: whatever it is i can't stand it
04:01 PM xxcoder: yeah it should be critical only, like fixing server or updating
04:01 PM roycroft: as i've said before (many times i think), when i ran a server on efnet fi any of my opers ever did something like that they would no longer be an oper
04:02 PM roycroft: there are mailing lists and discussion forums for messages like that
04:03 PM roycroft: libera.chat is mostly run by adults - more so that many other irc networks, but i guess we still have the 12-year-olds who abuse their privilege
04:04 PM * roycroft is done now
04:29 PM * JT-Shop needs to clean the desk off in the machine shop
04:30 PM xxcoder: just tip it for a second
04:30 PM JT-Shop: it's a really heavy oak desk
04:30 PM xxcoder: lol
04:35 PM * roycroft notes that people tip cows, which are heavier than oak desks
04:39 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/rifraf/Result3.jpg
04:41 PM Tom_L: fast fourier transforms and power spectral density to read a spinning top from the android
04:41 PM Tom_L: a rifraf project
04:46 PM Tom_L: went for 1:13 but the app didn't pick it up
04:46 PM Tom_L: wrong channel :/
05:05 PM xxcoder: lovely inheirance machining video today
05:05 PM xxcoder: love the new tool
05:10 PM JT-Shop: xxcoder, you get your trike assembled?
05:10 PM xxcoder: not yet, havent been up to it for while lol
05:11 PM xxcoder: need to get chain for it first also, as once its done, it will have to be parked outside. no room anywhere
05:12 PM JT-Shop: chain as in a lock and chain?
05:12 PM xxcoder: yeah. well more like a cable but yeah
05:33 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Yay - just watched the ford 8000 get hauled away..
05:34 PM JT-Shop: tractor?
05:34 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes
05:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the guy gave me what I was asking for it. He had one when he was younger and wasn't afraid of fixing the pto
05:35 PM JT-Shop: nice
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> the thing started right up.. which I think helped.. 🙂
06:16 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> spent the night at a water park... https://photos.app.goo.gl/CFLppJSYZ5PA2mnZA
06:17 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> kids had a blast - plus we were upgraded to a condo. It really was nice.
06:58 PM flyback: HOLY MOTHER OF CANUCK!!!!
06:58 PM flyback: ManMower!!!!!!!!!!!
06:58 PM flyback: L
06:58 PM flyback: L
06:58 PM flyback: L
06:58 PM flyback: T
06:58 PM flyback: N
06:58 PM flyback: S
07:02 PM * flyback canuck-slaps Leeloo and buzzmarshall also
07:02 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> What??? I have a feeling that a lot of stuff is not coming through the bridge.
07:02 PM flyback: gotta be like 20 yrs since I last chatted with ManMower on linuxnet
07:03 PM bjorkintosh: ccatlett1984 it's nothing.
07:03 PM bjorkintosh: just a reunion.
07:10 PM xxcoder: sadly peer kicked that guy
07:11 PM flyback: dammit
07:13 PM Tom_L: it's just flyback
07:14 PM flyback: :P
07:14 PM * flyback finishes his 2nd alcoholic drink celebrating getting sacked from his job after 3 months
07:14 PM flyback: oh well it wasn't a good fit anyways I was miserable
07:15 PM Tom_L: not the only job in the world
07:15 PM Tom_L: you still up north somewhere?
07:15 PM Tom_L: i forget...
07:17 PM flyback: pennysylvania
07:17 PM flyback: same 20 min radius all 51 yrs
07:17 PM flyback: heh
07:34 PM ManMower: flyback: hi :)
07:34 PM xxcoder: welcome back lol
07:39 PM * flyback is trying to figure out this ibm power5 system he has been tasked with secure wiping the disks from his soon to be ex-boss
07:40 PM ManMower: this would be the right place for someone to give you some G-code to destructively decommission them, I'd think. ;)
07:42 PM roycroft: five "signs" done, one to go
07:42 PM roycroft: er
07:42 PM roycroft: seven done, one to go
07:42 PM * roycroft can't count any more
07:43 PM roycroft: and shaper just posted the raised letter sign video
07:44 PM roycroft: since i need to sit for a while, perhaps i'll watch that before doing the last one
07:44 PM roycroft: maybe i'll learn something
07:44 PM xxcoder: the sign of things to come ;)
07:44 PM roycroft: i'm watching a pask makes video right now - he's building a guitar out of recycled materials
07:46 PM roycroft: i needed some air today, so i turned on the breaker for the compressor
07:47 PM roycroft: i did not hear the compressor pump, but did hear the motor, so i went out to check on it, and found the motor sheave and the belts on the floor
07:47 PM roycroft: not a big problem except i have to kind of contort my body to reach the motor shaft to reinstall the sheave, and i'm not up to contortions quite yet
07:48 PM roycroft: i can use a portable compressor for now when i need one
07:49 PM roycroft: but it makes me think i should install an access hatch so i can service the back of the motor and the pump from the outside
08:04 PM roycroft: the guy who is buying my buses just confirmed that he'll be at the old house with a trailer in the morning
08:04 PM roycroft: i'm beginning to believe it's actually going to happen
08:08 PM Tom_L: cash in hand is a sure thing
08:08 PM roycroft: yes
08:08 PM roycroft: and he's bringing a wad o' cash with him tomorrow
08:09 PM Tom_L: leave him enough to have lunch on
08:10 PM roycroft: he's getting a great deal and he knows it
08:11 PM roycroft: oh, this shaper session is crap
08:11 PM roycroft: they're not making the signs the way i am - by carving out the background
08:11 PM roycroft: they're cutting out the letters and applying them to a backing board
08:12 PM Tom_L: i wondered about that
08:12 PM roycroft: they're claiming their way is the superior one
08:12 PM roycroft: it's a useful technique for some things
08:13 PM xxcoder: interesting. yeah way I picture it, theirs, you have to somehow align letters
08:13 PM roycroft: but it's not my thing
08:13 PM Tom_L: https://quadrokopter.net/temp/optimum_spannmittel_leer.jpg
08:13 PM xxcoder: well can always make "holder" to hold em in place as glue cures
08:13 PM Tom_L: like deejay did on his tool holders
08:14 PM Tom_L: https://quadrokopter.net/temp/optimum_spannmittel_voll.jpg
08:14 PM xxcoder: thats nice looking.
08:14 PM Tom_L: from this morning
08:14 PM roycroft: what goes in the drawer?
08:14 PM Tom_L: you'll have to ask him
08:15 PM Tom_L: i see a cabinet in the 2nd one
08:16 PM roycroft: aah, i didn't see the second link at first
08:16 PM roycroft: that looks nice, but the cheap metal rack that my hold down clamps came in is a lot more compact
08:17 PM roycroft: this person must not have a shop real estate problem
08:17 PM Tom_L: deejay from germany
08:17 PM roycroft: ohh, it's deejay
08:19 PM Tom_L: i'd put it on rollers, i bet that drawer is heavy
09:10 PM roycroft: so far i have learned nothing from this video
09:10 PM roycroft: and it is almost over
09:15 PM Tom_L: cut your losses and move on
09:15 PM roycroft: it's ok
09:15 PM roycroft: i've been doing dishes and starting dinner
09:16 PM roycroft: i can't pay close attention to things on the television when doing chores like that
09:16 PM roycroft: so it wasn't a total waste of my time
09:16 PM xxcoder: lol I usually watch videos I dont care about while eating
09:16 PM roycroft: i actually did learn one thing - that the shaper guys are delusional
09:16 PM xxcoder: todays was idiots in cars
09:17 PM roycroft: they're pushing shaper studio - their "design software" - for things other than the shaper origin, and wanting to know what other products folks use it for
09:17 PM roycroft: shaper studio is hands down the worst design tool ever released
09:17 PM roycroft: it's not even pre-beta quaity
09:17 PM roycroft: quality
09:18 PM roycroft: for example, it cannot do fillets or chamfers
09:18 PM roycroft: in fact, in a recent shaper sessions, the guys were trying to answer a question about how to do fillets, and it was obvious that they did not even know what a fillet is
09:18 PM Tom_L: fill what?
09:19 PM xxcoder: machine designed by people who arent machinists
09:19 PM roycroft: and since it can't do chamfers, shaper people obviously are in no wasy separated from the animals
09:19 PM xxcoder: 😂
09:19 PM Tom_L: cave men beating a stone round
09:19 PM Tom_L: aka fred & barney
09:20 PM roycroft: anyway, that is over
09:20 PM roycroft: and i'm doing fine figuring out how to make the signs on my own
09:20 PM Tom_L: most wood projects require more space than metal
09:20 PM roycroft: shaperock studio is what they should call it
09:21 PM roycroft: yes
09:23 PM roycroft: time to put the pizza together and pop it in the oven
09:24 PM roycroft: it's anchovy night, so tom_l would not like it
09:26 PM xxcoder: had breadsticks and grape tomotoes, cooked in microwave with some sharp cheddar
09:45 PM roycroft: that's pizza-like
09:46 PM xxcoder: yeah almost was lol. sauces was small amount of msg, garlic-jalepino and sraracha
09:46 PM xxcoder: tomotoes wasnt cut in any way, I just ate em first with fork, then cut up breadsticks
09:48 PM xxcoder: whole, hot and have cheese and sauces it was really delious
