01:50 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
02:11 AM Deejay: moin
04:44 AM Tom_L: morning
04:45 AM rifraf: evenin Tom_L
06:59 AM rdtsc-w: * roycroft has to run out to the shop to get some tools, and will know how deep it is shortly --> haven't seen roycroft in an hour and a half... he must be stuck in a snow drift somewhere <-- took that as "running out to the shed, brb"
07:01 AM rdtsc-w: looking back, guess that does look like actual driving - was just trying to be funny
08:11 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> sooo how does one install QtPyVCP, tried the wiki but doesnt seem to work 😦
08:19 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> https://pastebin.com/tPi1TfT5
08:19 AM lcnc-relay: is there another source?
08:26 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> https://repository.qtpyvcp.com/repo/qtpyvcp-dev/
08:28 AM Deejay: hmm, did some more experiments with my new setup
08:28 AM Deejay: had to reduce P from 1000 to 800, otherwise oscillations can occur
08:28 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> oddname_skane@: https://cserver1.multixmedia.org/install_pobebasic.sh
08:29 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> hope this still works
08:29 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> what to do with that *.sh?
08:29 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> me and linux 🙂
08:30 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> we tolerate each other 😄
08:31 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> wget -O - https://cserver1.multixmedia.org/install_pobebasic.sh | bash
08:32 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> if someone you don't know sends you something like this, never do it 🙂
08:32 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> that cmd line will download the .sh file and execute it on your system
08:33 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> so, first go to the url and scheck the script for bad things
08:33 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> in this case, it's an installer script i used for probe basic, because i had the same problem as you before
08:34 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> meh alot of errors and howevers =/
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> hmm, what system/distribution you have ?
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> bookworm
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> https://repository.qtpyvcp.com/apt/pool/main/develop/python3-hiyapyco_0.6.0-1_all.deb https://repository.qtpyvcp.com/apt/pool/main/develop/python3-probe-basic_0.6.0-9.dev_amd64.deb https://repository.qtpyvcp.com/apt/pool/main/develop/python3-qtpyvcp_5.0.2-5.dev_amd64.deb
08:35 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> installed fresch linuxcnc
08:36 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> works on my bookworm host , hmm
08:36 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> raspberry or intel/amd ?
08:36 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> intel
08:36 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> nothing exotic or weird
08:36 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> ok, than show me your errors
08:38 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> will post the novell soon, then off a quickie to pick up the little one 🙂
08:38 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> https://pastebin.com/sXN6SxBg
08:38 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> sudo apt-get install -f
08:39 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> this cmd will fix the dependency problems
08:41 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> morning
08:42 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> hi
08:42 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> how's tricks Olli?
08:43 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> what ?
08:44 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> like... "how are you, what is up", just an odd expression
08:44 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> all fine 🙂 and you ?
08:44 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> looking at a maximat v13 lathe on ebay
08:44 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> considering what I would need to get rid of if i bought it
08:45 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> cool tool
08:45 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> this hobby sucks, everything is 1100lbs
08:45 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> but have no space for so big machines 😦
08:45 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> move to the USA
08:45 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> don't have to worry about putin invading
08:46 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> what's next for rio?
08:46 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> I don't care about putin
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> it has been running quite stable since my recent update
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> i will build a new board for din rails
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> nice
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> what fpga?
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> ice40hx8
08:47 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> how much is that board to make (bom)?
08:48 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> dev-board : https://eu.robotshop.com/de/products/devantech-icewerx-ice40-hx8k-fpga
08:48 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> I still have my mill on grbl, considering lcnc'ing it some day
08:48 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> have no schematic yet 🙂 all in my head at the moment
08:49 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> i have allready used this dev-board for the octobot board on my robot
08:49 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> the tang 9k seems enough, i do want to play with feedback via scales though.
08:50 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> i still have 2 tangs, another dream is maybe to run one as an ELS but the esp32's doing that well enough
08:50 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> too many backlog projects and pipe dreams
08:50 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> on the iceworx board i have more pins and it's little bit faster
08:51 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> never change a running system 🙂
08:51 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> i've wondered if it make any sense to get RIO doing sin/cos encoders
08:51 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> i have 4 heidenhain micro amp encoders.
08:51 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> unfortunately I don't have one otherwise I would install it
08:52 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> i'm not even sure how you'd do that on a fpga
08:52 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> but you can convert it to A/B signals
08:52 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> you need a bunch of analog stuff (trans- impedance amp)
08:54 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> thought that comes out as voltage, hmm, ok
08:56 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> afk -> need a cigaret
09:00 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you already have one in your mouth
09:01 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> back 🙂
09:04 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> my main problem with the tangnano is that it cannot be flashed from the raspberry
09:09 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> A really crappy picture of a really crappy mess https://photos.app.goo.gl/qQ2YHcmHbVoNe6qg7
09:12 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> only genius can master chaos 😎 😂
09:29 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is about 85% there.
09:32 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> no errors atleast 😄
09:32 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> thank you soo sooooo much 😄
09:34 AM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> and yes up and running it seems
09:56 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> JT-Shop: quick question on your hardinge, I am reinstalling the closer assembly and i was able to get the TIR on the extensions assembly down to 0.002" at the bery end where the draw tube bore is. but i get some vibration at higher rpm. was wondering if yours did this as well. seems it should be smooth, but im not certain where i need to look to resolve. I wouldn't think 0.002" TIR would cause this as it is the spec from hardinge.
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> Lcvette: I don't have a hardinge, but I found much of my high rpm vibration came from my drive belt from my motor
10:09 AM JT-Shop: I didn't do anything special when I replaced the o-rings in the spindle collet closer
10:09 AM JT-Shop: an old drive belt "can" cause vibrations
10:10 AM JT-Shop: it's been a long time since I ran the Hardinge
10:12 AM JT-Shop: and I'm still running Ubuntu 10 if that tells you how long ago I worked on it :)
10:20 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> 😲
10:20 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> ok
10:21 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> voiditswarranty@: could be, i cleaned the pulleys while i had everything apart and the belt, it looked to be in good condition but it may need to be replaced
10:22 AM JT-Shop: look to see if the belt is vibrating
10:23 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> i should change it out to a K series poly-v setup probably
10:23 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> JT-Shop: it does at certain rpm
10:24 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> i adjusted the belt tension while it was running to minimize it and ensure it wasn't too tight or too loose
10:24 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> i also went to great lengths to ensure the pulleys were aligned correctly
10:24 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> this did help some
10:25 AM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> so you guys may be right, at least hopefully its the belt. the motor bearings are freshly replaced but i didn't check the runout on the motor pulley while i had it out. uses a sheave type setup
10:36 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> pulley balance can be a thing too, my 100 year old mill shook like crazy if it wasn't bolted down until I balanced the pulleys but they were a good 50lbs each so it's a bit of a different story
10:38 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> and I wouldn't expect that to increase over time either, and wouldn't expect hardinge to have left it bad enough to cause problems
10:39 AM roycroft: i replaced the drive belt on my lathe with a segmented belt and the vibration went way down
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I need belts for the monarch
10:53 AM lcnc-relay: <schoch_@> i just switched to pj poly-v belts, super quiet and better torque
11:19 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> super easy to make pullies for too
02:46 PM xxcoder: roycroft: ran out of that sraracha, its not bad, but I decided I like trader joe ones better. the nicer cap fits perfect on joes though so thats awesome.
02:47 PM xxcoder: those sraracha have fairly sweet and bit spicy taste, good taste but I could get tired of it, unlike joes sraracha
02:47 PM roycroft: it's good that we have choices :)
02:48 PM xxcoder: indeed
03:05 PM roycroft: you must like that sauce a lot
03:06 PM roycroft: it usually takes me six months or longer to go through a bottle, and i use it regularly
03:06 PM roycroft: at lunch today, in fact
03:09 PM xxcoder: yeah that I do
03:24 PM roycroft: i just found out that one of my best friends, whom i've known for over 30 years and who was part of my weekly dinner group, passed in his sleep last night
03:24 PM * roycroft is very sad right now
03:24 PM Tom_L: sorry to hear that
03:25 PM xxcoder: that sucks, when very good friend leaves life
03:25 PM roycroft: he had health problems but had been taking care of them and was in the best shape i've seen him in years last week
03:26 PM roycroft: other than his hearing - he had a military career and suffered pretty severe hearing loss due to being close to munitions tests for too long
03:26 PM roycroft: i guess you never know when your time might be up
03:27 PM xxcoder: friend of mine suddenly went blind, got vision back and died by stroke 2 years ago. he was nearly 50. it can happen anytime
03:30 PM JT-Shop: sorry to hear about your friend but that's the best way to go if it's your time to expire
03:34 PM roycroft: yeah, it is the best way
03:34 PM roycroft: he just adopted a new cat last week, and was all excited about it
03:34 PM roycroft: he was down to one cat, and cats are almost always better in pairs or more
03:36 PM roycroft: anyway, i'm going to be sad for a while, but life will go on
03:36 PM xxcoder: yep
03:44 PM roycroft: we have a new winter storm advisory through thursday, and it has started lightly snowing again
03:53 PM JT-Shop: rain here till Sunday but skipping Friday
04:12 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> rain last night, today scattered showers and drizzle
04:26 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> already an 1 inch rain today....
04:32 PM JT-Shop: that's a lot of rain
04:54 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> just started a pretty heavy shower....
04:55 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> for us here it is
05:33 PM roycroft: now it's snowing pretty hard, and i have to go the post office, so i guess i'll find out how driving in the snow in this town works
05:33 PM roycroft: fortunately it's a short drive
05:33 PM JT-Shop: using the truck?
05:36 PM roycroft: my car is in front of the truck
05:36 PM roycroft: i'll see when i pull out of the driveway whether i'm ok with taking the car or whether i need the pickup
05:37 PM roycroft: fortunately my house is the last house in a cul-du-sac, so if i park the car out on the street no other cars would go near it
05:37 PM JT-Shop: that's nice
05:37 PM roycroft: yeah
05:38 PM roycroft: the snow is not too deep, but i don't know if there's a layer of ice underneath it
05:38 PM JT-Shop: my house is on a dead end dirt road off of a dirt road and you can't see my house from the road so parking is easy
05:39 PM JT-Shop: parking a vehicle outside is asking for wood rats to eat the wiring
05:39 PM JT-Shop: and insulation
05:42 PM xxcoder: quite cold outside, even with sun lol
05:42 PM xxcoder: refilled my water tank
05:50 PM JT-Shop: how often do you have to do that?
05:50 PM * JT-Shop started a fire in the shop but it went out
05:50 PM xxcoder: looks like once a month or so
05:51 PM JT-Shop: that's not bad
05:51 PM xxcoder: yeah.
05:52 PM rdtsc-w: JT, an intentional fire? ;)
05:52 PM xxcoder: insurance
05:53 PM JT-Shop: fire in my cast iron stove lol
05:54 PM JT-Shop: to knock the chill off but I gave up
05:54 PM rdtsc-w: used to have a wood burner in an old shop. put a coil of copper tubing in it, run to a car radiator... could extract a good deal of heat out of it that way
05:54 PM JT-Shop: nice
05:54 PM xxcoder: wouldnt you be able to build one jt? plenty of junkyards
05:54 PM JT-Shop: the cast iron is not as good as the wonderwood
05:56 PM JT-Shop: I would like to find another wonderwood for the machine shop
05:58 PM JT-Shop: I should get a vw bug radiator for it
06:02 PM Tom_L: that 70F couple days ago was just a nasty trick
06:02 PM JT-Shop: here in Missouri we call that the fake spring
06:02 PM Tom_L: yeah something like that
06:03 PM memleak: working on the image again today, hopefully i can get it to github later
06:03 PM memleak: been way too tired to do anything.
06:03 PM memleak: might actually get qtpyvcp working today too
06:04 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> memleak your doing an rpi image?
06:05 PM memleak: heavily optimized amd64 image
06:05 PM memleak: doing preempt_rt first then i'll be adding an option for rtai to the installer
06:06 PM memleak: if i had a pi i'd make one for that too
06:06 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:06 PM memleak: noighty noight, sleep toight. toight like a toiger.
06:06 PM roycroft: it wasn't too bad
06:06 PM roycroft: no ice - just a little slushy
06:07 PM roycroft: and highway 58 was clear, of course - it's a major state highway
06:07 PM roycroft: and the only road in town that gets plowed
06:07 PM memleak: i wish they wouldn't salt the roads as much as they do
06:08 PM memleak: if you cant drive in some ice and snow, you shouldnt be on the road.
06:08 PM memleak: i've been doing rally simulators for years and now i have no fear sliding :)
06:10 PM memleak: people suck at driving even when its nice and sunny though. IMO 99% of people shouldnt even have a license
06:10 PM memleak: the driving test is way too easy
06:10 PM roycroft: we do not use salt in oregon
06:10 PM roycroft: mostly roads that are tended at all are just plowed
06:11 PM roycroft: major thoroughfares and freeways are sometimes sanded
06:11 PM memleak: nice!
06:11 PM roycroft: putting salt on roads must have been the brainstorm of an auto manufacturing exec
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> right
06:12 PM memleak: yeah salt does nothing but wreck cars. it doesn't make the roads any safer because ice or no ice, its dangerous asf with the idiots out there
06:12 PM roycroft: i don't agree to leaving major roads to nature
06:12 PM roycroft: but salt is not necessary
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> with a small part of the conspiracy being handled by the manufactures of dog shoes
06:12 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> they also use beetjuice
06:13 PM memleak: i think we should stop trying to intervene with darwin :D
06:13 PM roycroft: don't leave the aftermarket undercoating industry out of the conspiracy
06:13 PM memleak: plus if safety was a concern, then people should be ticketed for driving around with bald tires
06:14 PM memleak: i mean personally i can take Toyo R888Rs in the snow, most cant
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> they mandate someplaces for winter tires
06:14 PM roycroft: https://tripcheck.com/RoadCams/cams/WillamettePass_pid658.jpg?rand=1738713899495
06:14 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> f
06:14 PM roycroft: that's a major highway that thousands of trucks/day use to deliver goods to people
06:14 PM roycroft: i'm fine with plowing that road
06:15 PM roycroft: that's the highway that goes through my town, although i'm at a lower elevation
06:16 PM roycroft: we don't have anywhere near that much snow
06:17 PM roycroft: https://tripcheck.com/RoadCams/cams/ORE58%20at%20Salt%20Creek%20Tunnel%20WB_pid3021.JPG?rand=1738714066940
06:17 PM roycroft: that tunnel is only a few minutes east of here, but still at a much higher elevation
06:17 PM roycroft: same road
06:20 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> does the tunnel fill with snow?
06:21 PM roycroft: no
06:21 PM xxcoder: prediction for today changed from partial cloud to snow
06:21 PM xxcoder: I see no snow, but glad I already filled the tanjk'
06:21 PM roycroft: well, if there's a blizzard it might partially fill with snow
06:21 PM roycroft: if the plows don't come
06:22 PM roycroft: we fortunately do not get blizzards very often
06:27 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> up to 1.5 inches now...
06:55 PM ziper2: thinkin' bout cutting aluminum plate by hand with a woodworking router
07:58 PM rdtsc: ziper, bought a cordless circular saw (expecting to destroy it) cutting about four feet of 1.5 inch-thick aluminum plate... using WD-40, it cut fantastic! no damage to blade, just goes verrrry slow
07:59 PM rdtsc: so a router might just work
08:00 PM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> Just watch the kickback. If it grabs you are going to have a bad day.
08:00 PM rdtsc: was worried about that with circular saw - only bound up once, from trying to go just a touch too fast
08:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://youtu.be/s021CRrXfjU?si=Nw0wk3D9UNo8ibAy
08:46 PM xxcoder: thats cool
08:47 PM xxcoder: finally put live captions program to use lol
08:47 PM xxcoder: autocaptions havent triggered ye
08:47 PM ziper2: rdtsc, what kind of blade did you use?
08:51 PM rdtsc: standard carbide-tipped blade, a brand new one
08:51 PM rdtsc: Nice SW :)
08:54 PM memleak: isn't diamond better than carbide?
08:54 PM * memleak knows nothing about tools so don't take this as judgement
08:54 PM Tom_L: for some things
08:54 PM memleak: but in some ways carbide is superior?
08:57 PM Tom_L: cost
08:58 PM memleak: ah
08:58 PM Tom_L: carbide is expensive enough
08:58 PM xxcoder: most interesting tooling I used was cobolt ones
08:59 PM rdtsc: Diamond (covered) blades are definitely used for things like ceramics and other very-hard-things; they work by wearing away tiny bits of material like sanding would. Carbide isn't as hard, but cuts like a knife though, making "chips" instead of dust. End result is, carbide would cut aluminum waaay faster than diamond. The diamond would probably "clog" since aluminum is so soft.
08:59 PM xxcoder: much more expensive, and it lasted maybe 5 parts lol. (very hard metal)
08:59 PM memleak: rdtsc, interesting!
09:00 PM Tom_L: rdtsc, thanks, i didn't feel like splanin it
09:00 PM memleak: graphene has been making waves lately, would it be possible to make a saw blade out of it?
09:02 PM rdtsc: probably not *made* out of graphine, but it may be possible to coat the cutting surfaces with it. There are many "coatings" used on cutting tools, each giving some benefit or another (usually longer tool life)
09:04 PM memleak: gotcha
09:04 PM memleak: carbon fiber would shatter right?
09:06 PM memleak: hey flyback, i used to see around in the coreboot channel
09:08 PM rdtsc: likely, yes. Materials have malleability, ductility, and other factors which influence whether they will cut (or be cut by another) material. Carbon fiber is strong and lightweight, but far too brittle against metals... would probably work great against cardboard though hehehe
09:12 PM memleak: lol
09:23 PM xxcoder: whew good thing my package made it into usa
09:23 PM xxcoder: usa is now blocking china and hong kong shippings
09:23 PM rdtsc: oh that can't last long... pile-up at the ports lol
09:24 PM xxcoder: dont know either. maybe just NEW shipping
09:28 PM rdtsc: AcT2018**
09:29 PM rdtsc: oops wrong window heh
09:29 PM Tom_L: better change that password
09:32 PM rdtsc: just for the mill, only on intermittently, but yeah
09:32 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> gotta use the right terms rdtsc
09:33 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> carbide cuts, diamonds are abrasive
09:33 PM rdtsc: got >90 browser tabs and four terminals open typically lol
09:33 PM rdtsc: right kevin :)
10:03 PM lcnc-relay: <thorhian@> PCD is used for making chips too, not just grinding dust. It makes beautiful surface finishes in aluminum. Also, Diamond turning is also done for incredible surface finishes as well.
10:17 PM rifraf: i got a few diamond bits to do copper bar but have not used yet, was hoping they would cut, the regular cutters were getting gummed up
10:28 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> fuck, i just smashed an endmill abnd i wasnt even cutting anything
10:29 PM lcnc-relay: <big_kevin420@> on my new spindle...
10:52 PM memleak: hopefully qtpyvcp works now, brb
11:00 PM lcnc-relay: <tyrantelf@> big_kevin420@: Oof that sucks
11:17 PM xxcoder: crazy https://youtu.be/ifQRS5fZCzM
11:18 PM xxcoder: guy buys cargo box full of excavators
11:27 PM memleak: another day wasted on qtpyvcp...
11:27 PM memleak: no dice. the main branch isn't even working, missing widgets
11:28 PM memleak: big_kevin sorry to hear
11:28 PM memleak: is the spindle ok?
11:28 PM memleak: brb rebooting
11:34 PM rifraf: some more progress on 5C bar feeder https://imgur.com/a/Flemkqx
11:39 PM memleak: back
11:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Lcvette> memleak: what are you trying to do?
11:51 PM rifraf: https://imgur.com/a/RunUNjg
