12:01 AM lcnc-relay: <onceloved.cn@> Does anyone know how to write components?
12:16 AM lcnc-relay: <onceloved.cn@> I have a python program that needs to be converted into components in c format. Can anyone help me?
12:38 AM jpa-: onceloved.cn@: if you know C, it is not very difficult - do you have your python code somewhere?
12:39 AM jpa-: even chatgpt might make a reasonable initial guess at it
01:32 AM Deejay: moin
01:35 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> moin
04:07 AM rifraf: any input welcome, trying to make an automated bar feeder for small stock without much prior experience https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9T8L9pdzVs
07:20 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> @rifraf, use a bellville washer stack instead of the coil spring. You will want a few hundred pounds of drawbar tension at a minimum. Plus you will only need to release the collet and won't need to worry about the pull back mechanism.
07:22 AM Tom_L: i mentioned bellvilles to him in another channel as well
08:26 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> -10f
08:33 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> https://www.datron-neo.com/de/datron-neo-simple-milling/datron-next/
08:33 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> I think I will try to recreate this
08:44 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> I am still considering whether to use web or qt5
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> i have the feeling web is more easy to maintain over the years
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> Someone told me about nativecam for example
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> this is not maintained anymore and a PITA to make it elvolve
09:06 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> maybe Im wrong
09:14 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> the web interface makes things more complex and there are more delays
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <meisterdippel@> but the gui itself will be easier to create
09:15 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> delays difference are in ms i guess?
09:16 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> you're not loading data or whatever
09:16 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram@> i wish i knew how to do it
09:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Your important stuff should be hardware...
09:46 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> -32C (-26f), the shop heater isn't keeping up. 40w way makes a mill table really stiff at +6C (42F) and the d-bit grinder wont spin fast enough to get the motor up past it's start circuit speed! I guess it's a writing software kinda day.
09:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> The shop is set to 55f - so far so good. (outside wood furnace)
09:47 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> house is 70F
09:48 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> shop is 40X80ft
09:49 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> mine is a small converted single car garage with terrible doors, I keep saying I'll fix that in the spring and then never do heh
09:56 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> dad had added windows and a large roll up door - so it isn't as tight as it used to be.
09:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is still going to take 100 years to organize this place...
09:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZNSRTZmqJ7os8fK27
09:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (that is only looking down 1/2 of the building)
10:01 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> I feel at home in shops like that!
10:17 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> anyone have any experience with STL files ?
10:21 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> with several million facets?
10:22 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> giving me flashbacks! but a little bit, what's up? Meshmixer was one of my secret weapons
10:23 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> a guy asked me to help him section and measure so parts on a scanned part. literally 5.5million facets....
10:25 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> Yes, that is not too big a file as scans go.
10:25 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> Meshmixer to decimate the file and then into fusion for slicing and measurement is my flow.
10:25 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well solidworks won't handle it..... freecad is having problems. rhino does ok.
10:26 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> fusion keeps crashing....
10:26 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> but i'll try your procesure.
10:26 AM roycroft: i was thinking about a roll-up door on my shop
10:26 AM roycroft: right now it just has a 3-0 person door
10:26 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> You need to reduce the file complexity first. Meshmixer is a pain in the ass but does a good job.
10:27 AM roycroft: i'm leaning more towards carriage house doors though - i think it would look better
10:27 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> roycroft: I'm thinking of doing the opposite, replacing the roll up with a pair of barn doors. the roll-up is tough to seal well
10:29 AM roycroft: roll up doors are not that expensive, even insulated ones, but the shipping is as much as, if not more than, the cost of the door
10:29 AM roycroft: that's the scam the roll up door people are running
10:29 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> The other program is meshlab to optimize the stl file.
10:30 AM lcnc-relay: <zincboy_ca_on@> I have insulated roll up doors that the previous owner installed in my shop. They seal well and keep the heat in/out but are very heavy.
10:30 AM roycroft: i don't need anything really wide - there will never be vehicles in the shop
10:31 AM roycroft: but a bit more than the standard 7' height would be nice
10:31 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> zincboy_ca_on@: i'll try them. the object is a drink bottle. 6-8 inch tall. it's for a patent litigation
10:31 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> same, I may just box in half of the doorday and stick a large person door, big enough to get the motorcycle in there
10:31 AM roycroft: i may build my own doors
10:32 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> roguish: ah, so it's not needing manufacture-precision? you may be able to get the job done in Blender, it's got measurement tools. not great ones, but it's designed for meshes at least.
10:32 AM roycroft: 5' would likely be wide enough
10:33 AM roycroft: if the scan is for patent litigation, you could probably elimiate about 5.4 million of the facets and still be fine
10:33 AM roycroft: can it be rescanned with the parameters tweaked a bit to simplify the file?
10:34 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> or simplify at the point cloud to stl conversion stage
10:34 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> the scan software probably can do this
10:34 AM roycroft: that too
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> probably no rescan.
10:36 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> and there are 3 version of 25 bottles....
10:36 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> 75 files... each around 360meg
10:36 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> just bought a large UPS backup.... 950va
10:37 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> free delivery tomorrow. best buy. not amazon
10:37 AM roycroft: we had a hard frost last night - it's -5 right now
10:37 AM roycroft: coldest night since i bought this place
10:37 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> chilly willy even in celcius
10:38 AM lcnc-relay: <voiditswarranty@> I wish it was that warm here
10:38 AM roycroft: it's been a mild winter so far, regarding temperature
10:38 AM roycroft: way too much rain, even for here, but mild temperatures
10:40 AM roycroft: my pickup probably would not start today unless i plugged the block heater in for a few hours
10:41 AM roycroft: since it still can't drive that is not a big deal
10:43 AM bjorkint0sh: does solidworks have a commandline component like autocad has?
10:43 AM Roguish: no
10:44 AM bjorkint0sh: damn. is it scriptable?
10:44 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I think sort of....
10:46 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok just downloaded meshmixer, meshlab, and blender
11:02 AM roycroft: solidworks had a cli-ish thing, but it's almost useless
11:02 AM roycroft: there is a scripting language, though
11:12 AM * roycroft would describe what sw has more as "keyboard shortcuts" than a cli
12:10 PM xxcoder: roycroft: I wonder if you could use tuned cermic heater set to little bit above freezing and just always have it on when parked at home
12:15 PM BorgPipe: fermented pickle juice anyone ?
12:17 PM BorgPipe: i had left a jar out for 2 months cought a wiff of it being non transparent anymore and started feeling drunk and halucinating for 2 hours
12:20 PM BorgPipe is now known as NetPipe
12:34 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> voiditswarranty@: zincboy_ca_on@ ok, trying meshmixer. opened stl, reoriented. saved as solid OBJ file. opened that in Solidworks, and made drawing with section and dimensions. pretty crude as I used default parameters in meshmixer...... can probably refine to get an acceptable drawing section..... thanks.
03:11 PM roycroft: wrecking yard in eugene (an hour from here): bracket only, need 3 days lead time to pull it, $160
03:11 PM xxcoder: geez. ebay is cheaper
03:11 PM roycroft: wrecking yard in cottage grove (also an hour from here): bracket and caliper together, we can have it ready this afternoon, $40
03:11 PM xxcoder: oh nice
03:11 PM * roycroft knows which direction he'll be driving this afternoon
03:11 PM Tom_L: cottage grove is a smaller market
03:12 PM roycroft: it is
03:12 PM roycroft: less competition
03:12 PM roycroft: but also less demand
03:12 PM Tom_L: can't rape you quite as bad
03:13 PM roycroft: i sheared the one bolt off that i removed from the cracked/bent bracket
03:13 PM roycroft: and those caliper bolts get frozen really well, so i anticipate having problems with the other bolt
03:13 PM roycroft: having the whole assembly handed to me will be a lot better
03:24 PM rdtsc-w: pre-soak in penetrant
03:30 PM unterhausen: we might find out if our hvac can work a the temperatures it's rated for. -5F on Wednesday
03:30 PM roycroft: i've ordered a smart thermostat for my house
03:31 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, you're having as much fun with the truck as I am with the C3... I just keep finding more evidence of Bubba
03:31 PM roycroft: $160, but i can probably save $30/month or so in heating cost with it
03:31 PM roycroft: yeah, jt-shop, this has not been fun
03:31 PM xxcoder: bubba the hammer and wire cutter repair guy?
03:31 PM xxcoder: oh yes and duct tape. never forget thay
03:32 PM roycroft: when doing the research on my current setup i found that the old furnace is still funcational as back-up heat
03:32 PM roycroft: so if the heat pump fails at least i have something
03:32 PM roycroft: jt-shop: i'm so close to finishing this job that there's really not much else that can go wrong
03:33 PM Tom_L: oh boy here we go now that you said that
03:33 PM unterhausen: I once fixed something on a car with a zip tie, and forgot about it until the transmission failed on a trip and I got caught
03:33 PM unterhausen: bubba would have used fence wire
03:33 PM roycroft: and i'm not afraid i'll jinx things by saying that
03:34 PM bjorkint0sh: I once used large zip ties to replace my 240's broken belt.
03:34 PM bjorkint0sh: it worked.
03:34 PM bjorkint0sh: managed to get me to a mechanic's shop.
03:34 PM roycroft: if this bracket and caliper fit, it's literally a matter of two bolts to mount the brake, install new brake pads, bleed, and go
03:38 PM JT-Shop: was the caliper bracket bent?
03:43 PM roycroft: bent and cracked
03:44 PM roycroft: i found a used bracke on ebay, but it was in pretty bad shape, cost $40 plus shipping, and would take a week to get here
03:44 PM roycroft: and then another few days for the post office to deliver it
03:45 PM roycroft: so getting one that i can go pick up today for the same price, and includes a caliper, is great
03:45 PM roycroft: it will cost me about $10 in gas, but shipping on the ebay one would have been that much or more
03:45 PM Tom_L: tip the delivery boy
03:56 PM roycroft: i already did - the tip was "don't work on your own vehicles - hire it out"
03:57 PM xxcoder: plan around that trip, like maybe hauling stuff from old house lol
03:57 PM xxcoder: its ni9ce that you was able to find good deal though
03:59 PM roycroft: it's the opposite direction to the old house
04:00 PM xxcoder: doh lol. shopping trip?
04:00 PM roycroft: the only thing i can add to the trop is maybe getting some groceries
04:00 PM roycroft: but the only market in that town is a safeway, and the prices are high there
04:00 PM xxcoder: I just finished reconfiguring some electrics so I can have full 1500w heater going without blowing breaker
04:00 PM roycroft: even if i just go get the part it will be worth it
04:01 PM xxcoder: which is awesome. tired of cold nights even with propone
04:01 PM xxcoder: I bet. right away have part, and decent vs ebay, or vs overpriced at other place
04:05 PM roycroft: in the old house i found that oil-filled electric radiators worked very well
04:05 PM roycroft: better than the radiant ceiling heat
04:05 PM xxcoder: I would love to have heated floor
04:05 PM roycroft: but you do have to have the circuit capacity for them
04:05 PM xxcoder: it makes the most sense. bottom warmth rises.
04:16 PM Rab: My sister had a new condo in Corvallis OR with radiant floor heating, and said it wasn't great.
04:18 PM xxcoder: yeah? what was problems with it?
04:18 PM Rab: I think one issue was that the slab floor had significant thermal mass, so it was hard to respond to sudden weather changes. Sometimes they were too cold, and sometimes they were too hot with the only recourse being to open windows. Not as efficient as one might assume.
04:18 PM xxcoder: ahh interesting
04:18 PM Rab: There was something else I can't remember now.
04:19 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> you need a thermostat that can predict and learn from the mass of the floor and work accordingly...
04:20 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I think a lot of those also have a outside and floor thermometer...
04:21 PM Rab: Yeah, I don't know what the thermostat was like. It was built around 15 years ago. Part of the problem was that the building was super efficient, without much airflow.
04:25 PM Rab: My aunt used to have an ancient rent-controlled apartment in NYC that had a boiler in the basement, and basically a pipe with a steam tap going through the living space. You would regulate the temperature by throwing the window open, even when it was in the teens outside.
04:26 PM Tom_L: Rab, and the upper floors were probably frigid
04:28 PM Rab: Tom_L, no doubt. It wasn't an admirable setup.
04:31 PM xxcoder: I bet in wall room heaters would do better job than that
04:32 PM Tom_L: ancient tech in NY
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it is 1 degrees and the heat pump is still keeping the attic at 68f
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> school was called off tomorrow - too cold.
05:41 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> everyone thought it was going to be called off today
05:41 PM Tom_L: gonna be bone chilling here tomorrow too
05:41 PM xxcoder: ice week here lol
05:42 PM xxcoder: im much less worried now that I have actually decent heat
05:42 PM Tom_L: -2F overnite predicted
05:42 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wind chills of 35 to 40 below zero.
05:42 PM xxcoder: 27f this night
05:42 PM xxcoder: 40f now
05:42 PM Tom_L: awesome :)
05:43 PM xxcoder: here 27f is very cold. it rarely gets below freezing.
05:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> must be nice lol
05:43 PM xxcoder: most times yeah
05:43 PM xxcoder: old days it would rain basically nonstop
05:43 PM xxcoder: nowdays not so much
05:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> just packed the furnace - the shop is still 55f
05:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> feels like a heat wave in here
05:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> after being outside for 5 minutes
06:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/ceMbpC4VcQsneSdc7
06:05 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> shop lights are bright
06:05 PM xxcoder: looks frosty
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> It is kinda snowing?
06:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> very very light
06:06 PM xxcoder: is it fog "snow"? basically water just falling down in tiny ice form
06:06 PM xxcoder: looks like very light fog
06:07 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> yes - that is what it has looked like all day
06:08 PM xxcoder: "Ice Fog: This type of fog is only seen in the polar and artic regions. Temperatures at 14 F (-10°C) is too cold for the air to contain super-cooled water droplets so it forms small tiny ice crystals."
06:08 PM xxcoder: fun lol
06:08 PM xxcoder: so it is ice fog there
06:08 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well - I should tell the kids 🙂
06:09 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> This morning - I thought the car windows were frosty - but it was just light snow - the wind shield wiper blades pushed it off
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> well
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> I am doing my part.. Drinking these until Leinenkeugels closes....
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://photos.app.goo.gl/GQgHuPhLxtSLo4kW8
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (it is a wisonsin thing)
06:30 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wisconson?
06:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> Wisconsin
09:36 PM NetPipe: what was the old dos cnc software called turbocnc or machcnc ?
09:36 PM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> turbocnc
09:36 PM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> 🙂
09:37 PM NetPipe: wonder if they ever released the source code or if an ai will reverse engineer it
09:38 PM NetPipe: http://www.dakeng.com/super_secret_code_link_do_not_distribute/sourcearchive.html
09:40 PM NetPipe: darn its encrypted
09:41 PM NetPipe: "Source code and free support is yours when you register this program for $60 US. See the ordering page for details."
09:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> a password protected zip file, lol
09:50 PM xxcoder: I opened zip without any input
09:50 PM xxcoder: if you guys do any lcnc dev, dont view the source code
09:52 PM xxcoder: oh yes passwor only when try to open
09:52 PM xxcoder: files that is, not zip
09:58 PM NetPipe: its in pascal anyway
09:58 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> lmao, the password is endmill for the zip file
09:59 PM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> 😮 i can try port it to the z80
10:02 PM xxcoder: funny password lol
10:05 PM NetPipe: turboss would that be with gpascal ?
10:06 PM NetPipe: or was that for c64 only
10:06 PM NetPipe: http://www.gammon.com.au/GPascal/
10:06 PM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> cpm pascal
10:06 PM roycroft: i learned pascal on a vax running vms
10:06 PM lcnc-relay: <turboss@> nice!
11:23 PM roycroft: so now bambu labs have not only backed off on their "security enhancement" crap, they are engaging in major gaslighting, denying they ever told people they would not be able to submit print jobs unless they upgraded the firmware, etc.
11:23 PM roycroft: and they have edited their website accordingly
11:23 PM xxcoder: yeah, dig some more I guess
11:23 PM roycroft: unfortunately for them, there are archiving sites that preserve all that stuff
11:24 PM xxcoder: man wish I could rise chickens
11:24 PM xxcoder: I'd make so much money
11:24 PM roycroft: in my view, the gaslighting is worse than the original lockdown
11:24 PM xxcoder: wa egg prices is very high
11:24 PM xxcoder: agreed
11:25 PM roycroft: eggs are so high now because of avian flu
11:25 PM xxcoder: yup, and wa is hardest hit
11:25 PM xxcoder: I bought dozen and half for $14
11:25 PM roycroft: millions of chickens were killed to try to stop it from spreading
11:25 PM roycroft: i'm still getting organic free range eggs for about $6/dozen
11:26 PM roycroft: they were about $4/dozen before the bird flu and the shortage
11:26 PM roycroft: oddly, i've seen factory eggs going for $9/dozen
11:26 PM roycroft: how is it that organic, free range eggs cost less than factory eggs?
11:27 PM xxcoder: corps
11:27 PM roycroft: some people think brown eggs are weird
11:27 PM * roycroft wonders what those folks would think if they saw blue eggs
11:27 PM xxcoder: was th0oe washed, or still have antibontics covering?
11:28 PM roycroft: factory eggs are always washed
11:28 PM xxcoder: I know
11:28 PM roycroft: that's why they don't keep for very long
11:28 PM xxcoder: talking about your organic eggs
11:28 PM roycroft: organic eggs are rarely washed
11:29 PM xxcoder: ok
