#linuxcnc Calendar

09:12 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> in the 40's yesterday - now it is 15f
09:27 AM Tom_L: 22°F High 18°F err low?
09:27 AM Tom_L: it was nice here yesterday as well
09:27 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it got super windy yesterday evening..
09:27 AM Tom_L: and that..
09:27 AM Tom_L: still
09:47 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:23 AM Tom_L: xxcoder, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze5fDIan1L0
10:32 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:51 AM rdtsc: Roycroft, dunno if this would work - an impact + https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9Q2WCPV/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?th=1 looks like it can measure peak - likely a matter of hitting peak, clear, hit again a few times until bolt no longer spins = tight enough. No reviews saying it can or cannot be done.
11:14 AM john__ is now known as C3-Shop
11:47 AM xxcoder: 57f, inside lol. fun
11:50 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> That was our shop last week, until we got the replacement fan motors in for the heater.
11:50 AM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> I was comfortable, everyone else was freezing.
12:06 PM xxcoder: Tom_L: looking
12:07 PM xxcoder: lol that intro
12:27 PM xxcoder: pretty good
12:27 PM xxcoder: taper is new to me
12:27 PM xxcoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCv7rs9iOrA lol weird print phone toy
12:40 PM roycroft: it just got above freezing here
12:40 PM xxcoder: its a ice day here
12:40 PM roycroft: i'm going to try to finish the pickup today, but don't want to work when it's below freezing
12:40 PM roycroft: so maybe in another hour or so it will be warm enough
01:52 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
01:52 PM Unterhausen: I swear cars only have problems when it's cold, even if the problems have nothing to do with the cold
01:57 PM Tom_L: that's murphy's law
02:12 PM xxcoder: yay got my breakfasts soylent here. no black suv stealing it this time
02:12 PM xxcoder: good thing too. I only have 3 bottles left
02:35 PM bjorkintosh: Unterhausen: do you have an old car?
02:35 PM Unterhausen: I don't, but I get to work on old cars sometimes
02:54 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Yo
03:01 PM roycroft: it's up to 5 degrees now, and the sun is out, so i think it's time to go finish up the pickup
03:02 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I have to finger out why the C3 is running rough
03:03 PM xxcoder: dont give it a middle finger it might get angry
03:05 PM Tom_L: dist cap arcing
03:07 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> cap and rotor is ok
03:08 PM Tom_L: is it a miss or like it's getting too much fuel to quick?
03:08 PM Tom_L: off idle or at speed
03:08 PM Tom_L: fuel pump starvation.. filter
03:10 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Feels like a misfire at speed
03:11 PM Tom_L: have you had the plugs out yet?
03:11 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> No
03:11 PM Tom_L: those tell a story
03:11 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Eating crab rangoon
03:12 PM Tom_L: i'm not wild about that but she is
03:14 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Checked the firing order and it's right
03:14 PM Tom_L: wires, cap rotor... does it have points & condenser?
03:14 PM Tom_L: another possibility
03:15 PM Tom_L: i've never really seen a condenser go bad but always replaced them with the points
03:15 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> HEI distributor
03:16 PM Tom_L: ok
03:16 PM Tom_L: arc traces are hard to see sometimes but show up more during humid weather
03:17 PM Tom_L: if it has one.. rev limiter acting up
03:17 PM Unterhausen: Our neighbor is out working on his truck, hopefully he gets it done before monday
03:20 PM Unterhausen: bambu drama continues into the second day
03:20 PM Unterhausen: wonder if any deals will be coming up
03:23 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c3-tech-performance/4898613-82-l83-runs-rough.html
03:24 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Tom_L that's the thread
03:25 PM Tom_L: haha i had the firing order memorized and hadn't needed it for years :)
03:25 PM Tom_L: just one of those things you somehow don't forget
03:28 PM Tom_L: the arm on the rotor center doesn't look super (worn a bit) but i don't see signs of arcing
03:29 PM Tom_L: you can also ohm the plug wires
03:29 PM Tom_L: for any 'out of the ordinary' resistance
03:30 PM Tom_L: stock timing is usually around 6-8 deg advance at idle
03:30 PM Tom_L: iirc
03:31 PM Tom_L: the vaccuum advance will move it 10-15 deg more iirc
03:31 PM Tom_L: i'm kinda pulling the number outta my arse but i think they're close
03:33 PM Tom_L: google is showing a bit more advance than i suggested here but alot depends on the engine cam etc
03:34 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Stock cam
03:34 PM Tom_L: check the idle timing with the advance unhooked
03:34 PM Tom_L: you can borrow my snapon timing light...
03:35 PM Tom_L: ^^ those were non performance timing suggestions
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> lol.. I just had to use a timing light this summer
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> it has been a long time
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> long long time
03:35 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I have a craftsman timing light
03:35 PM Tom_L: i haven't had mine out in years
03:35 PM Tom_L: mine's not the newer fancy ones with the build in advance dial
03:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> mine has an advance and it came in handy as there are no marks on the flywheel
03:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (just one)
03:36 PM Tom_L: i've had to make my own tdc mark on occasion
03:38 PM Tom_L: i also wonder if the engine has the original stock plastic timing gears or if they used those on the vettes
03:38 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Lots of chatter on the forum about checking that the harmonic balancer has not slipped
03:39 PM Tom_L: another reason to dial indicate TDC
03:39 PM Tom_L: thru #1 plug
03:39 PM Tom_L: https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/pesvj6/70s_gm_nylon_timing_gears_or_whats_left_of_it/
03:40 PM Tom_L: the outter ring was plastic
03:40 PM Tom_L: i've changed a couple of those too
03:40 PM Tom_L: likely not the problem
03:42 PM Tom_L: pull the water pump, timing cover and pop new stuff in
03:42 PM Tom_L: and if it's shot, drop the oil pan and clean out the plastic
03:43 PM Tom_L: i'd establish TDC is correct first
03:44 PM Tom_L: that will eliminate the harmonic balancer
03:44 PM Tom_L: the cap & rotor look 'used' but ok imo
03:44 PM Tom_L: from a few hundred miles away with poor eyesight :)
03:45 PM Tom_L: find true TDC by going say 20 thousands each side and then zero
03:49 PM Unterhausen: just updated my windows computer. BITD, you only had to worry about new bugs, now they might be trying to screw you
03:49 PM Unterhausen: plus new bugs
03:49 PM Tom_L: the gift that just keeps on giving
03:49 PM xxcoder: bugs all way down
03:50 PM xxcoder: windows is all bugs pretending to be os
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> But hey, at least the sound works.
03:50 PM Tom_L: linux updates are just broken bridges that have to be rebuilt
03:50 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Wondering how to find TDC in such a limited space
03:51 PM Tom_L: you can do it by feel if you can't get a gage in there
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <ccatlett1984@> Stick something down the spark plug hole, watch until it stops going up.
03:51 PM Tom_L: it will show you probably close enough to know if the balancer slipped
03:51 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Yup
03:51 PM Tom_L: stick a wire/screwdriver etc in there and feel
03:52 PM Tom_L: i kinda doubt that's it
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I was thinking of a dowel with a rubber band
03:52 PM Tom_L: whatever floats yer boat...
03:53 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> High water
03:53 PM NetPipe: removing rock damage from car rims ?
03:53 PM Tom_L: i don't know of a good way to test the timing gear
03:53 PM xxcoder: long wire camera?
03:53 PM Tom_L: you _might_ be able to see it on the rockers with an indicator for slop back and forth
03:53 PM NetPipe: would bondo make rims look new ?
03:54 PM Tom_L: NetPipe, trying to do a shady car deal???
03:54 PM Tom_L: :)
03:54 PM Unterhausen: I'm sure shady car repairs was covered in "Matilda"
03:56 PM Tom_L: high end miss to me indicates electrical somewhere
03:56 PM Tom_L: unless the carb is way off which it shouldn't be
03:56 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> That's what I thought
03:56 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> JT heads to the barn
03:58 PM NetPipe: brand new gold rims
03:58 PM Tom_L: btw you can test the advance timing by just sucking on the advance diaphram :)
03:59 PM xxcoder: sold gold rims would break brakes lol
03:59 PM Tom_L: if you are so enclined
03:59 PM xxcoder: solid
03:59 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> I have a vacuum generator lol
04:00 PM Tom_L: just saying, you don't have to rev it up unnecessarily
04:00 PM Tom_L: that advance is somewhat preset anyway, it either works or it doesn't
04:01 PM Tom_L: when the advance is introduced would depend on where the vacuum comes from like the thread suggests
04:04 PM roycroft: grr
04:04 PM roycroft: the brake bracket is bent and cracked
04:04 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Oh crap
04:04 PM roycroft: another delay, and i'm so close to the finish line now
04:05 PM xxcoder: murphy sucks. too bad hes as hard to find as waldo
04:05 PM roycroft: and of course none of the wrecking yards are open on saturday any more
04:05 PM roycroft: not since the before times
04:05 PM roycroft: i did not even for a fleeting moment consider bending it back and welding it up
04:06 PM Tom_L: not weldable?
04:06 PM roycroft: i'm not going to do that on a brake part
04:06 PM roycroft: i'm not a good enough welder
04:06 PM roycroft: and it's cast iron - not the easiest thing to weld
04:06 PM Tom_L: yeah
04:06 PM roycroft: i've done it before, but only with an oxy-acetylene torch, using nickel rod
04:06 PM Tom_L: brazing cast is easier than welding but i wouldn't trust that there either
04:07 PM roycroft: yeah, what i did before was more brazing than welding
04:07 PM roycroft: i see the brackets on ebay for $45
04:07 PM roycroft: so i expect that i can find one at a junk yard for <$100
04:08 PM roycroft: it's just that i have to wait until at least monday to find out if anyone has one locally
04:08 PM roycroft: at this point i'm willing to take a day off work and drive as far as portland to get it
04:12 PM roycroft: it's impressive how much damage can be inflicted when i drove the truck less than a mile after the bearing failure
04:12 PM roycroft: although i wonder how much of the damage was from prior to the failure
04:13 PM roycroft: i was going 55mph when the bearing failed and the wheel turned in
04:13 PM roycroft: i could see the brake bracket being bent and cracked instantaneously when that happened
04:14 PM * roycroft goes to work on other projects for the rest of the weekend
04:50 PM Unterhausen: hopefully the township declaring a snow emergency means we don't get any snow
06:01 PM ziper2: well I think this is the first time i've ever had an issue with too much bed adhesion
07:00 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wow - how long have I been running a dehumidifier up here? It has been a couple months. It has now stayed at 40% for a few days now without it running. Maybe I am getting the residual moisture out of the house..
07:00 PM xxcoder: thats definitely possible
07:01 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> maybe the mildew will be under control now.. 🙂
07:08 PM xxcoder: :)
07:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> that is an amazing peice of tech...
07:48 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT6jXu-Yx9w
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> watching the hot-staging and the booster turning around..
07:49 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> (and the de-acceleration and catch)
08:54 PM * roycroft wonders if he should make a list of things he wants/needs the come from overseas, and order them all before monday
08:55 PM roycroft: unfortunately i cannot order a 4 year supply of produce by monday - it would not keep
08:56 PM Tom_L: root cellar
08:57 PM roycroft: for some things that would work ok for a while
08:58 PM roycroft: but not four years
08:58 PM xxcoder: invent stasis field
08:58 PM xxcoder: it'd be world changing invention for sure
08:58 PM roycroft: i guess i should just start eating more patriotic food - big macs and diet cokes - instead of real, healthful food
09:00 PM cyborg_ar: dont forget the ketchup
09:00 PM cyborg_ar: counts as a serving of vegetables
09:08 PM roycroft: i do not consume catsup at all
09:08 PM roycroft: that's on the other side of the line that i drew ages ago
09:21 PM bjorkintosh: a 4 year produce supply? you gotta keep it alive: a garden or two will do that for you.
09:38 PM roycroft: i used to garden pretty extensively
09:38 PM roycroft: i plan on doing so again with the new place
09:38 PM roycroft: at the old house i built a nice raised bed garden
09:38 PM roycroft: it was great for a while, but then the tiny oak trees to the south of the garden became big oak trees, and it got too much shade
11:39 PM roycroft: so it appears that bambu labs yesterday started pushing some new firmware which disables all third-party software and requires virtually all operations to be authorized by bambu's cloud server
11:40 PM roycroft: they also told folks that they may not be able to initiate any new prints until after they install the new firmware, even when the printer is in lan mode
11:40 PM roycroft: so the only way to use the printer without "authorization" is to print from an sd card
11:46 PM xxcoder: yup. glad I idnt get one of those
11:49 PM roycroft: we were discussing bambu here the other day and i said that i think the hardware looks really good but i was concerned about the calling home thing
11:49 PM roycroft: it appears i was not being paranoid
11:50 PM xxcoder: earliest days bambu didnt even allow printing off cloud
