01:19 AM Deejay: moin
03:51 AM Tom_L: morning
03:51 AM Tom_L: 32°F low 29°F high 33°F
04:23 AM JT-Cave: 29°F High: 36°F Partly Sunny
06:55 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO9HA5VCyMc
07:26 AM JT-Shop: sweet one battery is fully charged on the generator
07:26 AM JT-Shop: dunno why that guy put 2 12v car batteries in parallel instead of a big battery but so long as it starts I'm not going to fix it
08:13 AM Tom_L: ran mine yesterday and started up on the first pull after sitting a couple years
08:34 AM Tom_L: cool
08:34 AM Tom_L: started sprinkling here
08:34 AM Tom_L: borderline freezing
08:39 AM JT-Cave: below freezing here and some precip is starting to show up by St. Louis and east of there
08:47 AM Tom_L: lookin at the radar it doesn't look like we'll get much
08:48 AM JT-Cave: yuck we have to go to a grave side service this morning
08:49 AM Tom_L: not a good day for that
08:49 AM Tom_L: she took ben grocery shopping early while i babysit
08:50 AM Tom_L: mom should be coming home today or tomorrow
08:58 AM Tom_L: aparently it's below freezing now.. got a call from them that everybody is bouncing off the curbs & each other
08:58 AM Tom_L: just a light sprinkle turned to an ice rink
09:05 AM rdtsc: ccatlett1984, take a look at https://github.com/mj1911/my-linuxcnc but note each 7c8x config is very customized and you could find mine as totally unsuitable. It is also still under construction (physically and program-wise.)
09:08 AM lcnc-relay: <t4kuy4@> quick question regarding pncconf.
09:08 AM lcnc-relay: whats the difference between limit, home and shared limit+home when configuring the inputs?
09:09 AM rdtsc: https://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/config/ini-homing.html
09:11 AM lcnc-relay: <t4kuy4@> ah that makes sense! thanks
09:12 AM rdtsc: study that page carefully; homing can be kinda complex :)
09:14 AM lcnc-relay: <t4kuy4@> rdtsc: yea..
10:24 AM lcnc-relay: <nick_namsep@> hey everyone i got ethercat working but im struggelling to get the configuration working with linuxcnc itself i dont really understand the HAL and ini files is there a place that has some examples or tutorials for configuring a ethercat servo from scratch? im using the leadshine el8 but cant seem to find a lot of references to it either
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> nick_namsep@ I would start a thread on the forum..
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> wow - thermostat in the shop is a life changer..
11:38 AM Roguish: a little chilly here, in the 40's..... but clear. no fog or rain today
11:38 AM Roguish: heading out for a ride, all bundled up.....lots of layers.....
11:43 AM roycroft: we're forecast for a bit of rain today and tomorrow, but not nearly as much as we've been getting (<5mm today and tomorrow), followed by a dry spell for a week or so
11:44 AM roycroft: it will be nice to not be raining hard every day
11:45 AM Tom_L: this was hardly enough to wet the ground but froze and traffic is nuts
11:45 AM Tom_L: stupid was out in force today
11:49 AM xxcoder: lol buildbot just finished build 2025. funny
11:51 AM xxcoder: roycroft: got that roland sauce you recommanded. lets see if its good lol
11:52 AM xxcoder: will test it ince my current bottle runs out
11:54 AM roycroft: let me know
11:54 AM roycroft: i haven't tried it, myself
11:54 AM xxcoder: lol ok
11:55 AM roycroft: when i went into town the other day it was raining so hard i could hardly see, even with the wipers on high speed, yet folks were following me so close i could count their nose hairs with my rear view mirror
11:55 AM roycroft: and this is multiple folks doing that
11:55 AM roycroft: i was driving at the posted speed limit
11:56 AM roycroft: sections of the road were covered in water such that hydroplaning was a real risk
11:56 AM roycroft: this road has no shoulder, trees on one side right next to the road, and a clif on the other side
11:57 AM Tom_L: i'd personally choose the trees
11:57 AM roycroft: there is a guard rail on the cliff side, but at speed a guard rail isn't all that effective
11:57 AM JT-Shop: I think Arlo rode his motorcycle down that roat
11:57 AM roycroft: driving into town i'm on the cliff side
11:58 AM roycroft: i had things totally under control
11:58 AM roycroft: but that can change in an instant
11:58 AM roycroft: and when you're following less than instant behind, that's a problem
11:59 AM xxcoder: I always drive like anyone in front of me can magically stop in an instant
11:59 AM xxcoder: if someone behind me is too close, I vary my speed 1-2 mph
11:59 AM xxcoder: enough to be unpredictable so they follow less close
11:59 AM roycroft: the safe following distance is 2 seconds behind
12:00 PM roycroft: and safe following is usually a function of distance
12:00 PM Tom_L: reaction time is greater than 2 seconds when you got a phone in one hand and a burger in the other
12:00 PM roycroft: but when distance can't be adjusted, it can be a function of speed instaed
12:00 PM roycroft: so i adjust my speed to match the distance when necessary
12:01 PM Tom_L: and watching your heathen children bouncing in the back seat
12:01 PM roycroft: of course that always results in the distance decreasing even further
12:02 PM * roycroft should get to work
12:02 PM roycroft: i'm going to start work on the laundry room today
12:02 PM roycroft: i really want to get my sink installed there
12:03 PM roycroft: and i have a bunch of sheet rock in the shop, so i can do that project without needing my pickup
12:03 PM roycroft: i'll need plumbing parts and paint
12:03 PM roycroft: all of which can be transported in my car
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> why did I get this error when inverting my enable pin?
01:06 PM lcnc-relay: https://pastebin.com/1vLjFf4b
01:08 PM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> if I dont do it steppers are energized when machine is in the "off state" 😄
01:09 PM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> using pnc-conf to set it up quickly, maybe it is doing something off?
01:10 PM lcnc-relay: <oddname_skane@> just want it so that steppers are not energized wheen booting up etc and not until I press
02:25 PM rdtsc: if my case, I had to add a pull-down resistor at each drive to keep them off normally, and drive this high when machine is enabled. There are a dozen ways in which this could be different...
02:56 PM JT-Shop: generator runs
03:06 PM JT-Shop: now if I can remember how to stop it and reset the start thingy
03:06 PM Tom_L: heh
03:07 PM JT-Shop: you have to set it up to start the next time
03:07 PM Tom_L: was your trip slippery?
03:07 PM JT-Shop: no precip yet
03:07 PM Tom_L: barely any here but enough to fip cars on their lid
03:07 PM Tom_L: flip
03:12 PM JT-Shop: I think it's been running long enough
03:13 PM Tom_L: i ran mine enough to warm it up good then let the carb empty out
03:13 PM Tom_L: diesel is probably a bit different
03:18 PM JT-Shop: on my gas generator I do the same plus I put a teaspoon of oil down the sparkplug hole and pull it over a few times
03:52 PM JT-Shop: precip is coming soon
03:54 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> below 20f here
04:20 PM * JT-Shop stacks up some firewood in the machine shop
04:29 PM Tom_L: outlook doesn't look good for tomorrow
04:29 PM Tom_L: monday looks like single digits
04:30 PM Tom_L: and Tues
04:31 PM Tom_L: blizzard warning
04:32 PM JT-Shop: ice accumulation of less that 0.1" so not bad there
04:34 PM JT-Shop: just ordered a new carburetor for the C3
04:38 PM Tom_L: stock?
04:38 PM JT-Shop: the one on there is a POS and has to go so yup just a Holley 600cfm
04:41 PM Tom_L: baked potato soup in a bread bowl tonight
04:42 PM JT-Shop: shrimp in noodles with garlic bread
04:45 PM Tom_L: not positive but think it's this: https://www.pamperedchef.com/recipe/Main+Dishes/30+Minutes+or+Less/Baked+Potato+Soup/283228
04:48 PM Tom_L: served in https://www.paneraathome.com/products/categories/artisan-breads/sourdough-bread-bowls
04:49 PM JT-Shop: with golden fish floating on top?
04:49 PM Tom_L: that's doubtful :)
04:51 PM JT-Shop: looks good if the celery is very finely chopped
04:52 PM JT-Shop: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c3-tech-performance/4895330-quadrajet-for-an-82-a-2.html
04:53 PM Roguish: try a thick creamy chowder in a bowl made from a large sour dough bread load.....
04:53 PM Roguish: mm, mm, good
04:54 PM Roguish: https://sf.eater.com/2020/4/27/21238892/how-to-make-homemade-sourdough-bread-bowls
04:56 PM * JT-Shop mixes up some jb weld...
04:57 PM xxcoder: hope jb weld tastes good
05:01 PM JT-Shop: smells good
05:02 PM Roguish: put a pinch of that between your cheek and gums
05:06 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841@> we just had Chinese it was good.
05:16 PM * JT-Shop is making chicken soup tomorrow... thinking about dumplings too
05:20 PM Tom_L: reading about your carburetor dilemma
05:21 PM JT-Shop: I love the QD fitting used for the brake booster vacuum hose lol
05:21 PM Tom_L: that was 'trick'
05:21 PM JT-Shop: so I could put a QD fitting on the hose lol
05:22 PM Tom_L: my bud put fuel injection on one of his racecars and loved that setup
05:22 PM Tom_L: idles super, starts easy etc
05:23 PM _unreal_: does anyone have any interest in 10 segment red bar graph LEDs I came across a bag of like 100. I'
05:23 PM JT-Shop: yup the fuel injection like the Holley Sniper are really nice
05:23 PM _unreal_: does anyone have any interest in 10 segment red bar graph LEDs I came across a bag of like 100.
05:23 PM JT-Shop: hmm there seems to be an echo in here
05:23 PM Tom_L: i don't remember what brand his was
05:23 PM _unreal_: backspace and enter are too close
05:24 PM _unreal_: for my oven mits
05:24 PM Tom_L: don't keep the keyboard in the oven
05:24 PM Tom_L: i hear it's bad for em
05:24 PM JT-Shop: and don't spill Pepsi on them
05:24 PM Tom_L: been there
05:25 PM _unreal_: packing packing packing. still dont have a home. and the realtor cancled the house viewing today she said she didnt trust the neighborhood considering my daughter.
05:25 PM JT-Shop: that was a 3 mile island skit on SNL
05:25 PM _unreal_: JT-Shop, shrug? cant say I know/remember that pone.
05:25 PM _unreal_: one
05:35 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:14 PM rdtsc: she made her "world famous nachos" tonight. deee-licious
08:11 PM linext: what would be the gcode command to run 0.75mm on a lathe in about 100 seconds?
08:17 PM linext: F0.45 G1 Z-0.5 ?
08:28 PM Tom_L: the distance to move would be Z-.75 ehh?
08:28 PM Tom_L: F is mm/min so that looks ok i think
08:29 PM Tom_L: doesn't seem right but i don't do metric alot
08:31 PM Tom_L: G91 G1 Z-.75 F 0.45
08:32 PM Tom_L: G91 moves from where you are to -.75 further in -Z
08:33 PM Tom_L: G90 would be the absolute position of Z-.75
08:33 PM Tom_L: from zero
08:37 PM linext: is the steps per mm the minimum travel?
08:38 PM linext: such as 320 steps per mm, means 1/320 is the smallest distance
08:46 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/config/stepper-quickstart.html#_mechanical_information
08:47 PM rdtsc: So Tom, trying to get FreeCAD to sketch a five-gang wall switch plate. Had it almost drawn, then boom, dozens of conflicting constraints. What a mess.
08:48 PM Tom_L: no surprise
08:50 PM Tom_L: https://grabcad.com/library/3-gang-wallplate-1
08:51 PM rdtsc: so ripping all of the duplicates out, no more conflicts... but there are identical geometries, with identical constraints, and some are good and others unconstrained. How in the @%^&?
08:52 PM rdtsc: I'd love to use pre-made geometry but this plate is totally custom, two oddball openings
08:52 PM Tom_L: draw one and drive the others with an array
08:52 PM rdtsc: what I get for adding two modern LED dimmers to an old wall box
08:53 PM Tom_L: array / grid
08:53 PM Tom_L: then if you edit the one, the others should update with it
08:54 PM Tom_L: and i forget... i think we were taught to array the solid not the sketch
