04:18 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:41 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:17 AM Deejay: moin
05:26 AM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> Morning... i had a migraine, took some Excedrin Migraine, now i am Buzzing!!! (not used to that level of caffeine)
06:22 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:20 AM Tom_L: 75°F / 93°F
08:36 AM JT-Shop: 70-90
08:38 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, do you generally start with a horizontal layout?
08:38 AM Tom_L: the ones i've done so far are either fixed or don't expand like they should
09:03 AM JT-Cave: mostly I use a grid unless it has only two vertical areas then I use vertical
09:04 AM JT-Cave: can't say I've ever used horizontal but I might have dunno
09:04 AM Tom_L: what does grid do?
09:05 AM Tom_L: snap things in place?
09:17 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:29 AM JT-Cave: it's one of the layouts you can pick from
09:29 AM Tom_L: right
09:30 AM JT-Cave: https://pasteboard.co/GGztjUOQ96VT.png
09:30 AM Tom_L: what's the difference between grid and form?
09:31 AM JT-Cave: I've never used the form layout
09:31 AM Tom_L: ok
09:32 AM Tom_L: i may have screwed up my 12 install anyway trying to set up 2 monitors
09:32 AM JT-Cave: qthttps://doc.qt.io/qt-6/qformlayout.html
09:39 AM Tom_L: heh, now my screen is on the 2nd monitor and i can't get to it
09:48 AM Tom_L: ok, getting better..
09:50 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:50 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT-Cave: going out in a few minutes to ride to the middle of Mt Diablo, out local mountain. mt is 3850' peak, middle is about 2200' from the park entrance to the middle is about 7 miles. riding with a new gal cycling friend. hope she doesn't kick my ass too badly
09:51 AM Tom_L: ok we'll see how long this works. trying to get win7 on one and linux on two
09:51 AM Tom_L: on a shared monitor
09:55 AM roycroft: today is shed deconstruction day for me
09:55 AM roycroft: in the middle of a heat wave
09:55 AM * roycroft anticipates that the one day job will take two days
09:55 AM Tom_dev: lots of gatorade or pedialite
09:56 AM roycroft: yeah, i have a bunch of that stuff that's going in a portable cooler
09:56 AM roycroft: and the shed is on the east side of the old house, so by the time it gets hot i should be mostly in the shade
09:57 AM roycroft: i'm thinking there will be 3 loads of material to haul away, so doing it over a couple days is no big deal
09:58 AM Tom_dev: borrow skunkworks's truck :)
09:58 AM roycroft: i just pulled temporary power for my air compressor and dust collector, which will live in the new shed that build out of the materials from the old one
09:59 AM roycroft: so that tempoarary power should be really temporary, if things go well
09:59 AM roycroft: but still worth doing
10:01 AM bjorkint0sh: Tom_L: what's the win7 for?
10:01 AM Tom_dev: all sorts of things
10:01 AM Tom_dev: my cad cam is windows based for one
10:01 AM bjorkint0sh: ah right.
10:01 AM bjorkint0sh: which one do you use?
10:02 AM Tom_dev: it's very old... smartcam freeform
10:02 AM bjorkint0sh: :-) Pencils are old!
10:02 AM bjorkint0sh: I've got lots of them
10:02 AM bjorkint0sh: as long as it's functional.
10:02 AM Tom_dev: it's still in production but has changed hands a few times
10:02 AM Tom_dev: back then it was more popular than mastercam
10:03 AM bjorkint0sh: really?
10:03 AM Tom_dev: yes
10:03 AM bjorkint0sh: I've gotta learn mastercam sometime.
10:03 AM Tom_dev: but it kinda got lost in the dust when it got traded off
10:03 AM Tom_dev: https://www.smartcamcnc.com/
10:05 AM bjorkint0sh: looks good.
10:05 AM Tom_dev: https://www.smartcamcnc.com/Products/Milling/SmartCAM_FreeForm_Machining.php
10:05 AM Tom_dev: my first copy of it was DOS based
10:05 AM Tom_dev: and believe it or not it has a better iges conversion than the newer one
10:07 AM bjorkint0sh: a DOS based cam??
10:07 AM bjorkint0sh: I bet it also had very good autocad integration then.
10:08 AM Tom_dev: 2d yes
10:08 AM Tom_dev: dxf
10:08 AM Tom_dev: i mainly used iges then
10:29 AM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
10:34 AM rdtsc: Years ago I bought an inexpensive qcad-cam license. https://www.qcad.org/en/what-is-qcad-cam Renewed a few times, but never built machine. Now machine prints were drawn using it. Hear the FreeCAD guys are routinely working on LCNC post-processor though.
10:35 AM rdtsc: Unsure how the qcad-cam processor faires - likely really good
10:42 AM Tom_L: qcad looks like 2.5d
10:43 AM rdtsc: yep not real 3D. can do isometric projections nicely though
10:47 AM rdtsc: I've tried FreeCAD several times. Maybe one of these days I'll finally get the hang of it.
10:50 AM rdtsc: I like QCAD because it's more like a traditional CAD, dealing with arcs, endpoints, tangents, etc. Lots of keyboard hotkeys and shortcuts to make drawing easy and fast. Nothing paramettric about it - straight-up drawing.
10:59 AM rdtsc: Tom_L, any chance an up-to-date arm64.deb could be shared? Wanna try running it on my bench hardware 7C80 and lone Z drive + motor.
11:24 AM rdtsc: Example of QCAD: https://pasteboard.co/gWi4siGUExZF.png
11:24 AM rdtsc: And https://pasteboard.co/s8Y3U6MvIBO3.png
11:28 AM bjorkintosh: rdtsc: is qcad scriptable?
11:28 AM bjorkintosh: (and in what language?)
11:31 AM rdtsc: Believe so: https://qcad.io/en/qcad-scripting
11:31 AM rdtsc: multiple languages
11:32 AM bjorkintosh: oh I see. it's written in qt
11:39 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Column_Mill_VMC.jpg
11:39 AM Tom_L: i'll stick with catia
11:40 AM bjorkintosh: CATIA is a career track.
11:40 AM Tom_L: it is
11:41 AM bjorkintosh: my old company used PTC/Creo. I really wish they had chosen CATIA instead.
11:41 AM rdtsc: Nice X-Y design :)
11:41 AM bjorkintosh: much (much) easier to find documentation for catia in the first place.
11:42 AM Tom_L: they teach it here at the votech
11:42 AM Tom_L: i took a couple classes
11:42 AM Tom_L: just to see what it was about
11:44 AM bjorkintosh: what it's about? Designing air and space craft :-)
11:44 AM bjorkintosh: top to bottom.
11:44 AM bjorkintosh: ... among other things.
11:44 AM Tom_L: saved me alot of rework that's for sure
11:44 AM Tom_L: yeah it's widely used here
11:44 AM bjorkintosh: they own Solidworks as well.
11:45 AM Tom_L: dassault has a big office here as well
11:46 AM Tom_L: https://www.3ds.com/assets/invest/styles/banner_small/public/2020-08/general-wichita-network-video-aerospace-defense-1280x720.jpg.webp?itok=yOzNTuG9
11:46 AM bjorkintosh: Wichita? of course.
11:46 AM Tom_L: :)
11:46 AM bjorkintosh: all the aircraft manufacturers have a big presence in Kansas.
11:46 AM Tom_L: the building to the left is a makerspace
11:46 AM Tom_L: part of it
11:47 AM Tom_L: shared with the uni
11:47 AM bjorkintosh: wow.
11:47 AM Tom_L: not all of it
11:47 AM bjorkintosh: is it cheap enough for personal use?
11:47 AM Tom_L: i dunno
11:47 AM Tom_L: i diy in my own shop
11:47 AM bjorkintosh: i meant Catia
11:47 AM Tom_L: no
11:48 AM Tom_L: you hear storries but one i heard was a 2 icon feature was like 10k
11:49 AM Tom_L: to wrap and unwrap solids
11:51 AM bjorkintosh: nuts.
11:51 AM Tom_L: i was trying to find a jpg
12:08 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:24 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
12:24 PM Tom_L: bjorkintosh, this might be it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfQdLPZBLIg
12:29 PM JT-Cave: nap time
01:12 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> sliptonic_bradcollette#0 how do I see what you're up to with CAM for FreeCAD, I've been out of the loop for a while
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> https://wiki.freecad.org/CAM_Workbench is this the latest info?
02:09 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:22 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, in the morning I'm going to delete the axis sims as I no longer think we need them to test with
02:22 PM JT-Shop: I also made a python file to build and install the deb to speed that up for me
02:35 PM rdtsc is now known as rdtsc_away
02:49 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, python file or a script?
02:50 PM Tom_L: bash script would be as easy
02:51 PM JT-Woodshop: python
02:51 PM Tom_L: how does it handle sudo?
02:52 PM Tom_L: you need that for gdebi
02:52 PM Tom_L: does it pull the changes from your git too?
02:53 PM JT-Shop: no but it could
02:53 PM JT-Shop: I'll copy you on the code when we get back
02:53 PM Tom_L: wanna see my bash script?
02:53 PM Tom_L: does all but gdebi i think
02:54 PM Tom_L: ok, i'll got take another nap :)
02:54 PM Tom_L: i think i finally got my 2 screens worked out
03:03 PM Tom_L: you can't use wildcards with gdebi :/
03:11 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> well crap... my servers kept overheating, so i had to shut everything down. so the backup-log is down until further notice. 😦
03:13 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> better to shut them down, then to further corrupt the FS and lose everything
03:16 PM xxcoder: thats why server rooms tend to have AC to keep air temperate controlled
03:44 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> yeah, i know that, but can't afford it either
03:45 PM Tom_L: mine is sitting on a shelf in the utility room along side the heater, water heater, dryer....
03:45 PM Tom_L: pulled it from a trash can quite a few years ago by now
03:46 PM Tom_L: i don't bother it and it doesn't bother me
03:48 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:48 PM Tom_dev: Linux itx-server 3.16.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.43-2+deb8u3 (2017-08-15) i686 GNU/Linux
03:48 PM Tom_dev: uptime
03:48 PM Tom_dev: 15:47:47 up 108 days, 20:51, 1 user, load average: 0.28, 0.17, 0.10
03:48 PM Tom_dev: last time i blew out the cobwebs
03:52 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> i was thinking of moving my VMs to independant servers, rather than an all-in-one server... i just can't afford the hardware right now
03:56 PM Tom_L: the bad thing about a shared monitor is keeping track of which keyboard you're using
03:57 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> i have a KVM switch
03:57 PM Tom_L: i tried that for a while and figured it was a pita for me
03:58 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> this whole thing is a PITA... i wish i didn't rely on the servers so much...
04:17 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:58 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Travis Farmer: try this: Synergy. IP based keyboard, mouse share.
04:58 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://symless.com/
04:59 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I use it to go between several computers.
05:07 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Tom_l: just fyi DeskProto only does indeed 5-axis CAM
05:08 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Heh indexed
05:09 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Discord on Android is clumsy
05:11 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Not bad for only $1k
05:13 PM xxcoder: yeah
05:13 PM Tom_L: that's good to know
05:14 PM xxcoder: forever too. unlike so many cams where you pay for each fart
05:19 PM Tom_L: oh index only...
05:20 PM xxcoder: its still not bad
05:20 PM Tom_L: you lose perpendicular tool movement
05:21 PM xxcoder: so it cant rotate while cutting?
05:21 PM Tom_L: right
05:21 PM xxcoder: that'd make impeller impossible
05:22 PM Tom_L: restricted but maybe not impossible
05:22 PM xxcoder: ok
05:22 PM Tom_L: certainly a pita
05:22 PM xxcoder: not too bad but I wonder why
05:22 PM Tom_L: takes alot more math
05:23 PM xxcoder: I guess if they succeed, it'd be new tier of price
05:23 PM Tom_L: instead of 'move here cut this' 'move some more and cut some more'
05:24 PM Tom_L: pocket walls on aircraft parts are seldom straight up and down but follow a contour
05:25 PM xxcoder: not the ones I saw/made
05:26 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I'm in the ER, sorry, slow to respond
05:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Carbide_em2.jpg
05:26 PM Tom_L: the one on the left is handy for that
05:26 PM xxcoder: sphere endmill. not one I ever used
05:26 PM Tom_L: ballnose with relief
05:28 PM xxcoder: fun :)
05:28 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I'm going to get back on the 5-axis CAM project
05:28 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Even if it kills me
05:29 PM Tom_L: let's hope it doesn't
05:29 PM xxcoder: dont work too hard
05:29 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Nah I have to push myself
05:29 PM xxcoder: on unrelated note, I finally moved the avocodo seed growing to the water vase stage lol
05:30 PM xxcoder: best success I had so far
05:30 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Have pics?
05:30 PM xxcoder: sure in a min
05:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/MYEUmamNZbzTDeBnzaHrqgpD/PXL_20240803_222344670.jpg

05:32 PM xxcoder: some sort of tower attachment point?
05:32 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Tube notching with roughing end mill?
05:33 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/qnLIeflLgmdKPYXGFbQyCIMp/image.png
05:33 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> there you go
05:33 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> yoda is keeping eye on it.
05:34 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, did you plunge that or come in from the side?
05:35 PM Tom_L: probably side since that's not center cutting...
05:35 PM xxcoder: can plunge but more than once, to make notch then deeper to that
05:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Tom_l: side
05:36 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Lighter gin pole assembly
05:36 PM Tom_L: i've used hole saws for that before
05:37 PM Tom_L: not as much fun as running that beast though
05:37 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Me too.. this was less insane surprisingly . Needed to be 10ish degrees
05:37 PM Tom_L: oh
05:37 PM xxcoder: how did you angle for that?
05:37 PM Tom_L: turned the toumbstone
05:37 PM Tom_L: probably
05:38 PM xxcoder: oh yes its on tombstone. ez
05:40 PM Tom_L: i made a fixture for a guy to cut just the tip off a tube similar
05:40 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Tube_slots/Tube_fixture4.JPG
05:40 PM Tom_L: hole saw goes in the front face
05:40 PM Tom_L: and it's pinned from the top iirc
05:41 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Tube_slots/Tube_fixture2.JPG
05:41 PM Tom_L: if you can make sense of that
05:41 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Tube_slots/Tube_fixture1.JPG
05:42 PM xxcoder: interesting
05:43 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Yes . Rotated the table
05:44 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Right.. I didn't feel like making a jig for one setup
05:45 PM Tom_L: looks like it fits like a pro did it :)
05:46 PM xxcoder: yep
05:46 PM xxcoder: the part looks factory made
05:47 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Well.. I haven't welded it yet.. then it will look like crap.
05:47 PM Tom_L: nothing a bit of bondo and paint can't hide
05:48 PM xxcoder: oh thought first picture was completed part lol
05:48 PM xxcoder: yep bondo
05:48 PM xxcoder: you only fail if its over 50% bondo
05:48 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Lol. skunkworks8841
05:48 PM xxcoder: capt hope you enjoyed the picture lol
05:49 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> 👍
05:50 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Just build up more weld and grind
05:51 PM xxcoder: grinder and paint makes you an amazing welder you arent
05:54 PM lcnc-relay: <xxcodery> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/huxcgPtRLbfdeUlQBgvIYnmU/s-l1200.png
05:56 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well, down to 96. topped out at 99 today
06:08 PM Tom_L: any lower and you may need a sweater
06:11 PM xxcoder: 99k eh
06:12 PM xxcoder: 99k would be -281.47f. pretty cool. might grab that sweater
06:12 PM xxcoder: *want to
06:18 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> 82 currently
06:27 PM Tom_L: 94
06:29 PM xxcoder: dang those is cold
06:30 PM JT-Shop: roguish where do you get your tires
06:30 PM xxcoder: 299.261k here
06:31 PM JT-Shop: mine are starting to look a bit flat after 600 miles
06:31 PM xxcoder: tires?
06:31 PM JT-Shop: road bike
06:32 PM xxcoder: ahh pretty good mileage :)
06:32 PM xxcoder: I want to have a tricycle dammit lol. need to do some stuff first
06:33 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i fixed up a script if you wanna try it
06:33 PM JT-Shop: I have no clue how many miles to expect from road bike tires
06:33 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/bash_script/
06:33 PM Tom_L: i guessed based on mine where you put things
06:33 PM xxcoder: dunno, never maxed mine either. my highest mileage bicycle I ever used was 1k miles
06:34 PM Tom_L: and i used dpkg -i instead of gdebi because it doesn't make you answer 'yes'
06:34 PM xxcoder: it was given away for free when I realized ill never use it again
06:34 PM JT-Shop: you just have to pass --n to gdebi to not have that prompt
06:34 PM Tom_L: you do have to do the password for sudo
06:34 PM Tom_L: oh
06:35 PM Tom_L: they both do the same job
06:35 PM JT-Shop: my python file you don't need to type in the password
06:35 PM Tom_L: i generally use gdebi
06:35 PM Tom_L: cool
06:39 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:49 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
07:39 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/saWARymGUIVwdwtIRsxMpJkp/Some-useful-tips-for-construction-workers-1717610090243.mp4
07:40 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I worked around people that work like this
07:40 PM xxcoder: lol
07:49 PM roycroft: i just got home, and the smoke is really bad today
07:49 PM roycroft: it was nice at the old house, and i got a lot of work done
07:49 PM roycroft: but the aqi is 313 here right now
07:49 PM roycroft: i'm not even going to unload my pickup for a while, possibly not tonight at all
07:51 PM bjorkintosh: that was funny, captainhindsight
07:52 PM roycroft: i just got a tetanus shot
07:52 PM roycroft: but i also was taught when i was a wee laddie to remove nails from boards as the boards are removed when doing deconstruction
07:52 PM roycroft: and i spent a lot of time today removing nails and screws
07:53 PM roycroft: it's one of those things that has stuck with me my whole life, which makes deconstruction go slower, but it's a lot safer
07:53 PM xxcoder: yep
07:53 PM xxcoder: once had nail go though my hand
07:53 PM xxcoder: and rip out sideways
07:53 PM xxcoder: fun!
07:53 PM roycroft: it's also a lot easier to stack boards if they don't have nails/screws sticking out of them
07:54 PM bjorkintosh: the french have really done a number on us.
07:54 PM bjorkintosh: the opposite of construction is destruction.
07:54 PM bjorkintosh: or dismantling.
07:54 PM roycroft: with their stinky swimming venue?
07:54 PM xxcoder: I have mirrored ingeration math symbol on side of my left hand since then
07:54 PM bjorkintosh: deconstruction was some bullshit the french philosophers kept vomiting all over their studies.
07:54 PM * roycroft has not caught up with the news of the day yet
07:55 PM bjorkintosh: oh it's all hot air, I'm sure.
07:55 PM bjorkintosh: I never watch the news. keeps me balanced and unpissed off.
07:55 PM xxcoder: smokey hot air
07:55 PM roycroft: i worked in hot air all day today
07:55 PM roycroft: and now i'm home, and yes, there is hot smokey air outside
07:55 PM roycroft: which is why i'm indoors
07:58 PM Tom_L: rethinking your move?
07:58 PM roycroft: looks like the same old same old
07:58 PM Tom_L: you never seemed to talk about smoke much before...
07:58 PM roycroft: no, it was the right thing to do
07:58 PM roycroft: this is an especially bad summer
07:59 PM roycroft: i knew there would be smoke up here
07:59 PM roycroft: my house is in the part of town that has the least fire danger, and usually the best air quality
07:59 PM roycroft: i would rather have moved somewhere down in the valley, closer to eugene, but this is what i could afford
08:00 PM roycroft: and i really like being in a small town
08:00 PM roycroft: we have over 120 active fires in oregon right now - that's a huge number
08:00 PM roycroft: and the smoke is almost all they way down to eugene right now
08:01 PM roycroft: the other day eugene had smoke but there was none up here
08:01 PM roycroft: i actually do talk about smoke a lot, every august
08:01 PM roycroft: as does everyone else in this part of the world
08:06 PM xxcoder: yeah only reason I dont say much this time is because theres no smoke this year so far
