#linuxcnc Calendar

12:54 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> ffffrf you just need a wider range of couplings
01:07 AM Deejay: moin
01:07 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> they have probably been using the same supplier of steppers for many years
01:07 AM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> nema17 steppers are still widely available with 1/4 in. shafts
05:48 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:51 AM JT-Mobile: morning
06:25 AM Tom_L: morning
06:31 AM Tom_L: ffff, https://www.ebay.com/itm/252990695147
06:31 AM Tom_L: 1/4" shaft
06:31 AM Tom_L: i got mine with 3/8" shaft
06:31 AM Tom_L: they have both
06:36 AM Tom_L: JT-Mobile, i noticed a few things don't show up in dark mode like the status bar text at the bottom
06:36 AM Tom_L: 'Error'
06:37 AM JT-Mobile: yup the images don't show up too
06:38 AM Tom_L: i got mine mostly 'ok' but i dunno about some of it
06:41 AM Tom_L: i didn't use dark on QWidget but rather the one one step below that. i forget what it was called and the pc is off
06:41 AM Tom_L: but it opened up more control over color
06:41 AM Tom_L: a little more work
06:42 AM Tom_L: have fun today
07:03 AM JT-Mobile: weather is perfect today
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/xHfyGkTJnadMIZESynYJzqal/IMG_0065.jpg
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> hey guys thank you for helping me yesterday - i am getting some 1/4 steppers today along with basic drivers - can you guys confirm my wiring will work(from driver to mesa): I would do pul+ to step+, dir+ to dir+, and GND from driver to GND on stepper row, and enable+ to an output pin, and gnd to gnd of output pin, not gonna wire alarm. I set logic to 5V and rms current to match my stepper and set it to 200 pulses/rev
10:45 AM Tom_L: PUL must be pwm
10:45 AM Tom_L: alm must be alarm out signal?
10:46 AM Tom_L: i'm not as familiar with digital drivers
10:47 AM Tom_L: not sure what all the pulse per rev stuff is about
10:49 AM Tom_L: i set that up in each joint section with DIRSETUP DIRHOLD STEPLEN & STEPSPACE
10:49 AM Tom_L: on mine
10:50 AM Tom_L: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Stepper_Drive_Timing
10:52 AM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
10:56 AM rdtsc: Perhaps I'd wire the alarm, if I had free inputs. And wire them into the estop circuit, such that any motor alarm e-stopped the machine. But that can be done later (if it all)... just leave a few wires free for such things in the cabling.
10:59 AM Tom_L: RPI dark: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/rpi_mill_3/Screens/Dark/
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> ohh that makes sense
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> I like that idea
11:00 AM Tom_L: what idea?
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> wiring alarms to estop
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> chatgpt said t owire pul+ to step+
11:00 AM Tom_L: yeah i thought that was right
11:01 AM Tom_L: i don't trust UI
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> and said its rising edge for steps and stepper timing of Step Pulse Width (STEP_TIME): Minimum 1.5 microseconds
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: Step Space (STEP_SPACE): Minimum 1.5 microseconds
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: Direction Hold (DIR_HOLD): Minimum 5 microseconds
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: Direction Setup (DIR_SETUP): Minimum 5 microseconds
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: But that seems too fast
11:01 AM Tom_L: AI
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> Blindly believing it is bad
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> trust but verify
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> works well enough
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> 😛
11:02 AM Tom_L: pretty soon we won't have to think at all
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> I am still confused on when you wire both step+ and step-
11:03 AM Tom_L: differential wiring i think
11:07 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> ok it says dm542T accepts both diff and non diff so I will wire it as nondiff lol
11:07 AM Tom_L: yes
11:09 AM Tom_L: https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/stepper-motor-drivers/gecko-driver-g203v
11:09 AM Tom_L: i'm using those
11:10 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> Yeah I am planning on getting quality ones like the gecko drivers and automation tech steppers once I confirm I can actually use this machine lol
11:11 AM Tom_L: https://www.geckodrive.com/product/g203v-digital-step-drive/
11:11 AM Tom_L: digital version
11:11 AM Tom_L: 80v 7A
11:11 AM Tom_L: max
11:11 AM Tom_L: i'm running mine at 48V 3.5A
11:11 AM Tom_L: i think :)
11:12 AM Tom_L: is it a sherline lathe?
11:12 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> yes
11:12 AM Tom_L: i had a mill and the only thing i kept was the spindle since i had so many holders for it
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> Yeah I really regret going with their overpriced steppers and driver box
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> its like ancient tech
11:13 AM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> they sell a 30+ year old desktop with linuxcnc installed for 800$
11:17 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Final/chip_guards/Chip_guard5.jpg
11:17 AM Tom_L: the only thing 'sherline' is the spindle
11:24 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: is JT around? I have question on MesaCT
11:28 AM Tom_L: he's in OK
11:28 AM Tom_L: having fun
11:28 AM Tom_L: probably will check in this evening
11:29 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> oh, ok. I was messing with it. trying to do a config for my 7i80. it wouldn't let me choose a daughter card....
11:29 AM Tom_L: he hasn't done some of the older cards
11:29 AM Tom_L: that would be one of them
11:30 AM Tom_L: 7i90 7i80 are the same with different interfaces
11:30 AM Tom_L: what daughter card?
11:33 AM Tom_L: his main focus to start was all the newer 'available' cards
11:33 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> 7i33 a servo card
11:34 AM Tom_L: maybe you could set the daughter card up with a different main and copy it over
11:34 AM Tom_L: that's the best i got fer ya
11:35 AM Tom_L: i'm not sure what 50 pin cards he has working
11:35 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok, i'll try that. what card would you suggest?
11:35 AM Tom_L: on that is in the list :)
11:35 AM Tom_L: one
11:35 AM Tom_L: it's been a while since i've looked at mesact
11:37 AM Tom_L: also he may not have all the servo stuff tuned yet since he was looking for a servo to test with
11:37 AM Tom_L: i dunno
11:38 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> there's no hurry, i'm actually trying to set up a test system with a servo drive and motor that i'll send to him if i get it going....
11:38 AM Tom_L: cool
11:39 AM Tom_L: did you see my 'dark' for the rpi?
11:39 AM Tom_L: been working on that
11:39 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> no havent
11:39 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/flexgui/rpi_mill_3/Screens/Dark/
11:40 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> looks nice.
11:40 AM Tom_L: seems GUIs are going with dark themes now i guess
11:41 AM Tom_L: mostly me learning what all the widget settings are for
11:43 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> 9:30 and it's already 90 outside
12:20 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Tom_L : did you get the RTAI debs to work?
12:20 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> if not I'll post them ALL later
12:21 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> along with instructions
12:22 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I did a few RTAI installs yesterday, from plain Debian 12 to upgrades from linuxcnc-uspace using the 2.9 Iso
12:22 PM Tom_L: no, i didn't persue it any more after that
12:24 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> if you are jumping from linuxcnc-uspace you have to be sure to COMPLETELY remove any trace of it before installing RTAI, it usually means using apt purge
12:24 PM Tom_L: no i started with a netinst plain vanilla debian 12
12:24 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/rwpBUpyfQEAWwNLtFOOTVYaG/20240706_103809.jpg
12:25 PM Tom_L: shiney
12:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> that way is easy, you just install the deb packages in any order and reboot and choose the RTAI kernel
12:25 PM Tom_L: that's what i did the first time
12:26 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I have all the debs on a drive 50 miles from me 😦
12:27 PM Tom_L: i'm in no rush anyway
12:27 PM Tom_L: JT i think i finished the dark gui
12:27 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> was getting <4uS jitter on old core 2 duo's
12:28 PM Tom_L: meh, that _might_ be acceptable :)
12:28 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> also i5's
12:28 PM Tom_L: mine will be on a D525
12:28 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> Tom_L: I don't think there is a 7i33 daughter card for anything......
12:29 PM Tom_L: roguish, he just popped in if you wanna ask him
12:29 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> nah, don't need to bug him now when he's away having fun
12:32 PM Tom_L: roguish, ^^ maybe that's why he want's the servo
12:36 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> using pncconf now to see what happens
12:43 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Tom_L cool
12:44 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> Group 6 is about to go to the cold box
01:09 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as unterhausen
01:09 PM unterhausen: shapeways disappeared.
01:16 PM Tom_L: witness protection program..
01:17 PM Tom_L: unterhausen, you mean these guys? https://www.shapeways.com/
01:18 PM unterhausen: yeah, they fired everyone so there is nobody to take down their website
01:18 PM Tom_L: huh
01:18 PM unterhausen: happens
01:18 PM Tom_L: there must be one left, the 'they'
01:19 PM unterhausen: I think all the employees left after the management team quit
01:20 PM unterhausen: I have seen that elsewhere recently. The entire management team took jobs with another company without telling anyone anything
01:20 PM Tom_L: that happened to an aircraft business here or they just went bankrupt
01:21 PM Tom_L: fortunately cessna came along and bought/took over them
01:21 PM Tom_L: around here there's always someone around to gobble up the assets
01:22 PM Tom_L: i heard Boeing is buying Spirit back too
01:22 PM unterhausen: the spirit purchase is because they were not competent though, right?
01:23 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Shapeways is gone!?
01:23 PM Tom_L: i'm sure they were alot of the same employees
01:23 PM unterhausen: the other company I'm thinking about also has a website
01:23 PM unterhausen: search for "shapeways out of business" Plenty of articles
01:24 PM Tom_L: nap time
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> huh, these co's are so full of crap
01:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> they live off their investors and never make a profit
01:25 PM Tom_L: capt, when you get to the files, scribble some basic directions and i'll give it another try
01:26 PM unterhausen: shapeways was smart enough to take payment up front
01:26 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> late tonight
01:26 PM Tom_L: ping me
01:26 PM unterhausen: funny thing is, at the bottom of the shapeways page it says, "trusted by businesses"
01:27 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> https://www.protolabs.com/services/3d-printing/locations/minneapolis-mn/ I have wondered about these guys as well
01:28 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> https://www.xometry.com/capabilities/3d-printing-service/minnesota/minneapolis/
01:35 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> 1:21
02:12 PM unterhausen: I have heard protolabs is good, but expensive
02:13 PM unterhausen: lots of suggestions on this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/1dwqygc/shapeways_is_bankrupt_what_now/
02:34 PM xxcoder: https://craftcloud3d.com seems good
02:34 PM xxcoder: testing it with disc of sabu, model I made while ago
02:34 PM xxcoder: scaled to 10% because 600mm is huge
02:35 PM xxcoder: stainless steel is $16 plus $23 shipping
02:41 PM xxcoder: ordered one disc of sabu for hell of it. mirrored stainless steel
02:56 PM Tom_L: JT compared to what?
03:02 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> oh joy, 99 now
03:02 PM Tom_L: hey, it ain't hot til it reaches triple digits!
03:03 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> just around the corner....
03:03 PM Tom_L: 72F here
03:03 PM Tom_L: but i'm inside :)
03:04 PM Tom_L: 89 actual
03:04 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/eGLSNKAmmplEMklTBwehMTzH/image.png
03:10 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> 1:19
03:10 PM Tom_L: JT whoz winnin?
03:10 PM xxcoder: will be 89f today. fun
03:10 PM Tom_L: that's 2 sec better
03:10 PM xxcoder: tues will be really bad though
03:10 PM xxcoder: its now predicted to be 97f
03:11 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> today is supporsed to be the hotest for the next week.
03:11 PM xxcoder: tacoma its this tues
03:11 PM Tom_L: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-e&q=wichita+weather
03:11 PM xxcoder: 92 tomorrow, 93f next day then tues 97f
03:12 PM Tom_L: i'll keep what i got thanks
03:12 PM xxcoder: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-lm&q=tacoma+weather
03:12 PM xxcoder: tom looks like you will have humidity bomb soon. rainy day then very hot days
03:12 PM Tom_L: haha they call that a heat advisory??
03:12 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> check this one. it's good. owned by IBM
03:12 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> https://www.wunderground.com/
03:13 PM xxcoder: it is, here it dont get that hot normally
03:13 PM xxcoder: peak in summers should be high 80s to very low 90s f
03:13 PM Tom_L: you guys don't have ac?
03:13 PM Tom_L: yeah i heard that tore up jamaca and cosumel
03:13 PM xxcoder: dunno about others but I do
03:13 PM Tom_L: been to both several times
03:15 PM Tom_L: https://www.caller.com/story/weather/hurricanes/2024/07/05/beryl-hurricane-update-tracker-texas-coast-map-path-rainfall-winds-storm-surge/74306896007/
03:17 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> hurricanes in the Gulf and East Coast are nothing new.......ya live there, eat em
03:18 PM Tom_L: :)
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> we get quakes. they
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> re fun
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> way too any whiners theses days....
03:18 PM Tom_L: we never used to but have in the last few years
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> may
03:18 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> many
03:19 PM Tom_L: ours were likely due to oil fracking
03:19 PM xxcoder: fracking should be illegal honestly
03:20 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> whining should be a capital crime
03:20 PM Tom_L: heh
03:20 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> just like stupidity
03:21 PM Tom_L: you can't fix that
03:21 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well, lunch time, then nap time......
03:21 PM Tom_L: hopefully they'll eliminate themselves
03:22 PM xxcoder: dont care unless pogroms or killing is planned
03:24 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> One more track session and I'm done for.
03:25 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT: ya having fun?
03:27 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> ok, touched 101
04:04 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
04:13 PM lcnc-relay: <JT> 126
04:22 PM Tom_L: yeah you're dun for
04:23 PM Tom_L: when they start falling off...
04:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:02 PM JT-Mobile: whew
05:06 PM JT-Mobile: I got 7.9 MPG
05:11 PM Tom_L: on track?
05:11 PM JT-Mobile: yup
05:12 PM Tom_L: nice day for it
05:12 PM JT-Mobile: burned a 1/2 tank of gas
05:12 PM JT-Mobile: the weather was awesome
05:12 PM Tom_L: not bad
05:13 PM Tom_L: the alcohol funny car got about 5gal/mi
05:13 PM Tom_L: but who'z kepin track
05:16 PM JT-Mobile: I did 5 track sessions and was a bit tired after the 5th
05:16 PM Tom_L: i noticed your time went down on the last one
05:17 PM JT-Mobile: yup got to know the track a bit so running a better line
05:17 PM JT-Mobile: tire temperature said warm... first time I've seen that
05:18 PM Tom_L: notice any side wear?
05:19 PM JT-Mobile: nope
05:19 PM JT-Mobile: did drift a bit a few times but tried to not drift
05:19 PM Tom_L: those probably run alot cooler than slicks
05:20 PM Tom_L: those tend to ball and flake off rubber balls
05:20 PM JT-Mobile: wow
05:20 PM Tom_L: depending on how hard they are
05:20 PM Tom_L: one dirt track here would wear a set of hard tires out in an event
05:21 PM Tom_L: hard sandy
05:21 PM Tom_L: like sandpaper on the tires
05:21 PM JT-Mobile: sand is shart
05:21 PM JT-Mobile: p
05:21 PM Tom_L: it's a tradeoff of hard or stick to the track
05:22 PM JT-Mobile: brb
05:28 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> it should be fine to wire alarm signals from two of my drivers to a single input pin right?
05:28 PM Tom_L: dunno
05:28 PM Tom_L: what if one alarms and one doesn't?
05:28 PM Tom_L: seems like a bad idea
05:29 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> but I wire them to act as estop, so regardless of which motor alarms I would want the entire machine to stop
05:29 PM Tom_L: not sure what effect one would have on the other one
05:29 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> whether it be one or both
05:29 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> hmm okay
05:29 PM Tom_L: we've already been thru the 'shorting out' phase here
05:29 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> 🤣
05:30 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> separate it is
05:30 PM Tom_L: make a little circuit with an or gate chip
05:30 PM Tom_L: 3 input or
05:30 PM rdtsc: That can only be done if the output is an "open collector", meaning an open switch to ground. It may be - the only place that would state this is the driver module datasheet. "Totem-pole" or "push-pull" outputs cannot be wired together.
05:31 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VrG_0aTFVQ
05:31 PM rdtsc: (Well, they could, once, before failing.)
05:32 PM Tom_L: you could have a pretty little board made up n all...
05:32 PM Tom_L: wouldn't have to be any bigger than your thumbnail
05:37 PM pcw---home: Typical OPTO fault outputs can be connected in parallel or series (depending if they are NO or NC)
05:38 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:39 PM rdtsc: True, opto output is usually an open collector.
05:42 PM Tom_L: JT-Mobile, PR #40 has all 3 qss updated on the rpi
05:42 PM Tom_L: standard, light touch, dark touch
05:43 PM JT-Mobile: cool, I'll do that tomorrow
05:43 PM Tom_L: i still can't get the background for the tool selector figured out
05:43 PM Tom_L: the rest i think is done
05:44 PM Tom_L: readme included
05:59 PM JT-Mobile: ok
05:59 PM JT-Mobile: chow time
05:59 PM Tom_L: yup
06:27 PM roycroft: i think i sold my lathe
06:27 PM roycroft: i'll know for sure tomorrow if the guy shows up to get it
06:28 PM roycroft: there's a glut of machinery around here at the moment, and nobody wants to buy anything
06:28 PM roycroft: i have one guy who sells used machines who is willing to come get the lathe and not charge me to pick it up, and until today that was my best offer
06:29 PM roycroft: i looked at his website, and he's selling bridgeport class machines for $600
06:29 PM roycroft: that's how crazy it is here at the moment
06:29 PM roycroft: that's pretty much scrap prices
06:30 PM Tom_L: moving it would cost more unless you diy
06:30 PM roycroft: well, it's more than scrap - scrap cast iron is going for $250/ton here
06:30 PM roycroft: i could diy but it would cost a lot in time
06:30 PM roycroft: and i really would rather have a lathe that's in better condition, and smaller than that one
06:31 PM roycroft: the guy coming tomorrow agreed to pay $300 for it
06:31 PM roycroft: i'll take that if he has the cash and shows up
06:31 PM roycroft: it's better than nothing :)
06:31 PM Tom_L: barter with him :)
06:32 PM roycroft: i'm fine with the deal, if it goes through
06:32 PM Tom_L: wood or metal lathe?
06:32 PM roycroft: 12x36 metal lathe
06:33 PM roycroft: if i had the time and the space to store it i could probably get $1200 for it
06:33 PM Tom_L: he probably will
06:33 PM roycroft: i need my garage shop empty by tuesday - the foundation folks are arriving wednesday
06:33 PM roycroft: yeah, i think he will
06:34 PM * roycroft needs to get the old house sold asap so he's not paying on two mortgages
06:34 PM roycroft: i have two pickup loads of stuff in the old garage shop still, not counting the lathe and horizontal mill
06:35 PM roycroft: so i should be able to get it emptied for the foundation folks with no problem, assuming those two machines go away
06:35 PM roycroft: if they don't, i'll hook up the winch on my pickup and drag them out onto the driveway
06:35 PM roycroft: come hell or high water, the garage shop will be emptied by tuesday
06:36 PM roycroft: high water is not likely, but it's 40 degrees right now, so hell is a distinct possibility
06:36 PM roycroft: but even hell won't stop me
06:37 PM xxcoder: unless machine melts from heat lol
06:40 PM roycroft: i have a portable garage that i haven't used in about 20 years
06:40 PM roycroft: i dug it out of an outbuilding today and hauled it to the new house - hopefully it's in halfway decent shape still
06:40 PM roycroft: there is a slab in front of my shop that's just the right size for the portable garage
06:41 PM roycroft: so if it's in ok condition, it will be nice to just dump stuff into it for now while i'm moving, and move it into the shop later, as i can
06:41 PM roycroft: but now i have to set that thing up
06:41 PM roycroft: and since i haven't done so in 20 years or so, i'll have to figure it all out, but i don't think it will be that hard to get sorted
07:53 PM * JT-Mobile is FDAH
07:54 PM xxcoder: falling down at home?
07:55 PM infornography: pew pew pew
07:56 PM * xxcoder dies
07:56 PM infornography: You know that movie Falling Down?
07:57 PM infornography: JT must have the at home version X)
07:57 PM xxcoder: nah never watched that movie
07:57 PM * JT-Mobile is not at home
07:59 PM JT-Mobile: watched Enemy Mine the other day
08:00 PM xxcoder: that was definitely interesting movie
08:01 PM JT-Mobile: I cruse Turner Classic Movies for good ones
08:01 PM JT-Mobile: cruise
08:02 PM JT-Mobile: oh yea Fat Dumb And Happy
08:04 PM JT-Mobile: I'm glad tomorrow is a slow and easy day
08:24 PM roycroft: not
08:24 PM xxcoder: next 3 days for me is stay the heck inside.
08:24 PM roycroft: record high temps again, and i am hoping to make two trips to eugene tomorrow, with moving the lathe being part of one of them
08:25 PM roycroft: i got the portable garage frame set up, but four of the toggle bolts were broken, so i can't put the siding and top on until i get some more
08:25 PM roycroft: it went up pretty easy, other than being outside in the sun while doing it
08:26 PM roycroft: being able to come inside to cool off and rehydrate every few minutes definitely helps
08:26 PM xxcoder: yeah stay safe
08:27 PM roycroft: i've always been good about rehydrating, but i did not have a/c at the old place
08:27 PM roycroft: other than in my office and a little bit in the garage shop
08:27 PM JT-Mobile: even though it was not hot today I drank a lot of water and pissed a lot lol
08:28 PM xxcoder: latter is important part too lol
08:28 PM roycroft: i've drunk a lot of water today, but mostly sweated it off
08:28 PM xxcoder: as long as its not closed cycle
08:28 PM JT-Mobile: yup
08:30 PM roycroft: we broke the record high again today, for the second day in a row
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> well - I splurged and bought myself a birthday present.. Been playing with it for the last 2 days and it is pretty nice... bambu carbon x1
08:31 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> just don't tell capthindsight..
08:32 PM JT-Mobile: lol
08:34 PM roycroft: it's too hot to even think about drinking any alcohol today, and it takes some serious heat for that to happen
08:38 PM JT-Mobile: night
08:56 PM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
09:17 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> the moment of truth, am about to retry my sherline lathe with new steppers/drivers/wires
09:25 PM * roycroft hopes the magic smoke does not make an escape
09:26 PM xxcoder: invent magic smoke injector/refiller
09:26 PM Tom_L: i think i would bring them online one at a time
09:32 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> woohoo nothing is happening
09:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> motor isnt even getting warm
09:33 PM Tom_L: do they move?
09:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> no
09:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> time to debug lol
09:34 PM Tom_L: you must live next door to the stepper store
09:34 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> amazon
09:34 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> maybe i should unscrew it and see if the motor is even locked up
09:34 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> since it doesnt have a double shaft
09:35 PM Tom_L: do those drivers have idle current shutdown?
09:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> one switch says if you flip it half current or full current, i assume that means half current with inactivity
09:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> actually its a little warm
09:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> im only putting in 24V
09:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> i confirmed the power supply is working
09:36 PM Tom_L: mine barely get warm
09:36 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> I checked the motor leads with a multimeter to find the wires aassociated to a shared coil
09:36 PM Tom_L: just don't plan a bbq
09:44 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> man how on earth do you even start to debug so many wires so many connections
09:44 PM Tom_L: one at a time
09:44 PM Tom_L: i personally would connect one drive and get it working
09:44 PM Tom_L: then move on
09:45 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> I do only have one drive right now
09:45 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> with the stepper
09:45 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> confirmed mesa pins working, stepper driver is powered on
09:45 PM Tom_L: you need to find the step space / step length for the driver
09:45 PM Tom_L: and get that right for the step signal
09:46 PM Tom_L: in the ini per joint section
09:46 PM Tom_L: make sure the step signal goes to step and direction to direction
09:46 PM Tom_L: and ground to signal ground
09:47 PM Tom_L: check the drive enable
09:47 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> when I was googling it people said you could start with some generic high numbers and it would at least work somewhat? or is that not true
09:47 PM Tom_L: it will sound angry but should so something
09:47 PM Tom_L: make sure the enable is enabled
09:50 PM xxcoder: wow stream trains might be back again https://hackaday.com/2024/07/06/british-trains-to-maybe-make-way-for-steam-once-more/
09:51 PM xxcoder: lot of changes though, like no coal
09:53 PM Tom_L: nuclear reactor
09:54 PM xxcoder: lol that would be insane but no
09:54 PM Tom_L: you caught the sarchasm ehh?
09:54 PM xxcoder: stream turboine
09:55 PM xxcoder: lol yeah. though nuclear ones would be interesting, in least till you try to get rid of spent stuff, or accient happens
09:56 PM Tom_L: the world must think it's safe to transport spent rods
09:56 PM Tom_L: look around? how many melt downs have there been?
09:56 PM Tom_L: and how many from coal?
10:02 PM xxcoder: this skips all of bckground https://youtu.be/7PZ4_Mk7wiw?t=754
10:05 PM xxcoder: so it burns hyrogen and oxygen, and it makes high pressure stream. interesting
10:07 PM Tom_L: so capture the steam and run it back thru the electrolysis to burn again
10:07 PM Tom_L: perpetual machine!
10:07 PM xxcoder: could be done yeah, if theres enough power source like fron solar panels
10:08 PM xxcoder: nice video, lists pros and cons
10:08 PM Tom_L: i didn't click
10:08 PM Tom_L: busy on the other pc
10:09 PM xxcoder: yeah didnt assume either way :D
10:09 PM xxcoder: well hope its good replacement for diesels but dunno if it will be
10:21 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> hmm my enable output pin is just showing like a static 0.12V
10:22 PM Tom_L: you just have one enable pin?
10:22 PM Tom_L: is it gnd active or 5v active?
10:22 PM Tom_L: tie the enable to gnd iirc
10:22 PM Tom_L: from the driver
10:23 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> actually it should e enough: i have ena+ from driver to output 1 and gnd to gnd
10:23 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> but on the manual
10:23 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> it says "Optically isolated, differential." for enable
10:24 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> so i wonder if that means I ahve to plug in enable-?
10:24 PM Tom_L: on the drive?
10:24 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> yes the manual for the drive is saying enable is differential
10:24 PM Tom_L: one sec
10:25 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/UtwcPfaRTIWdiUHEwGfXcYmF/image.png
10:25 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> oof I wonder if its the step thing with 200 khz frequency lol does that mean I need to like modify something else
10:26 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> my "pwm base frequency is 20000" and pdm is 6000000 hz
10:27 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> wait wtf do I have to connect enable to an input pin??
10:30 PM Tom_L: i think for differential the opto isn't connected to anything so if you need + enable, tie the gnd of the opto to gnd and the +enable to your enable pin on the db25
10:31 PM Tom_L: 2 wire enable on the driver?
10:31 PM Tom_L: or if you needed - enable just reverse it
10:32 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> I tried disconnecting enable and alarm from the driver and still no movement. your first sentence is what I originally had i think
10:33 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> waittttt i might know whats wrong
10:34 PM Tom_L: i was looking for my wiring chart
10:34 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> this might be a dumb question lol but do I need the dir- step- all connected to ground as well? I thought just connecting gnd on the driver to ground on mesa would be enough
10:35 PM Tom_L: leave them open
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/jQopMuiJFyoTTeiUYdghWqqh/IMG_0079.jpg
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> see
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> ih
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> oh ok
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> so dont have them connected to gnd?
10:35 PM Tom_L: take the ena- to gnd
10:35 PM Tom_L: i think
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> ok
10:35 PM Tom_L: leave the others open
10:37 PM xxcoder: interesting. I connected all - to ground on my royuter setup
10:38 PM Tom_L: ffff, look on the first page of my diagram and see how i wired the enables: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/configs/NEW_MILL/New_Mill_IO_Pinout.pdf
10:38 PM Tom_L: IO 16 etc
10:39 PM Tom_L: err 18
10:40 PM Tom_L: it was easier for me to make a chart because i tested quite a bit and made it easy to update the chart
10:40 PM xxcoder: yeah I should have done that for mine lol
10:40 PM xxcoder: its been few years since I put my cnc router away
10:40 PM Tom_L: IO 16 shows the wiring even though it's not enable its still an opto
10:41 PM Tom_L: so looking at that, you may need to gnd all of them
10:42 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> like ground all of the negatives
10:42 PM Tom_L: dir & ena
10:42 PM Tom_L: step doesn't need it
10:42 PM Tom_L: does the driver have ena leds etc?
10:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> i tried grounding enable+ but it did nothing
10:43 PM lcnc-relay: since i have shared ground between mesa driver i can connect it to any ground right
10:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> what do you mean? i plugged all of the wires myself
10:43 PM Tom_L: gnd to ena+ is backward
10:43 PM Tom_L: gnd to ena-
10:43 PM Tom_L: ena pin to ena+
10:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/kBJpoKvkDUrywNzmFenWVYKp/IMG_0080.jpg
10:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> sorry that’s what i meant
10:43 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> ena- to gnd
10:44 PM Tom_L: you may need to do that with dir as well
10:44 PM Tom_L: but likely not step
10:45 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Tom_L: https://onelaboratories.us/rtai_lcnc/ copy each and install using: sudo dpkg -i (place the deb file here)
10:45 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:45 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> reboot and choose the RTAI kernel
10:46 PM Tom_dev: ok thanks
10:46 PM Tom_dev: a not tonight project
10:46 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> this is when starting from a Debian 12 install without linuxcnc-uspace installed
10:46 PM Tom_L: right
10:46 PM Tom_L: that's what i did the first time
10:47 PM Tom_dev: you don't use gdebi?
10:47 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> IF linuxcnc-uspace is already installed then you need to run sudo apt purge linuxcnc*
10:48 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> this ^^ is what worked every time today
10:48 PM Tom_dev: ok
10:49 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> this assumes that you are already in the directory with the debs in your console
10:49 PM Tom_dev: yup, i get that
10:50 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> RTAI latency on i5's and core 2 duo's is <4uS until you load firefox and even worse when you play a video
10:51 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> after a few hours they ended up with the same latency jitter as any Ryzen or older AMD APU
10:52 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> they would sit for quite some time <4uS so you have to run the latency test longer
10:52 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> i don't own any Intel PC's , these are all at a makerspace
10:53 PM Tom_L: i have an i5 i _could_ try it on
10:54 PM Tom_L: but the D525 is the target
10:54 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> for the first few minutes it might even stay <2uS
10:54 PM Tom_L: and it runs the old/new RTAI
10:54 PM Tom_L: you in chicago?
10:55 PM Tom_L: i bet that's a mess this weekend
10:56 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I'm an hour outside the city
10:56 PM Tom_L: ok i got the files & directions
10:56 PM Tom_L: nascar road course there this weekend
10:56 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> I'm half way between Chicago and Milwaukee
10:56 PM Tom_L: don't bother going in
10:57 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Celeron 847 has similar latency using preempt_rt
10:57 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/RTAI_TEST/RTAI_D525_bookworm.png
10:57 PM Tom_L: that was the first RTAI on the D525
10:58 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> https://www.newegg.com/asus-c8hm70-i-hdmi-mini-itx/p/N82E16813131948 tested a few of these before
10:58 PM Tom_L: on the DL page
10:58 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> use isolcpus=1, it did help
10:58 PM Tom_L: no pcie short slot
10:59 PM Tom_L: JT-Mobile, take notes!
10:59 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> i would drop an LPT card or Mesa into the PCIe, the boards were on sale for ~$25ea
11:00 PM Tom_L: yeah that's what i did here
11:00 PM Tom_L: or ethernet for mesa
11:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> IT FUCKING WORKS
11:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> IT FINALLY FUCKING SPINS
11:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> FUCK
11:01 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> i connected every fucking dir - step - enable - alarm negative to a shared ground
11:02 PM Tom_L: you're not excited are you?
11:02 PM Tom_L: so they're all on opto isolators
11:02 PM Tom_L: that's what i wasn't sure of on step
11:03 PM xxcoder: nice
11:03 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> my entire vacation
11:03 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> gone
11:03 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> but it finally works
11:03 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> now i will try Z axis and if that spins praise the lord
11:05 PM Tom_L: hallelujah!
11:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> it works
11:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> they both work
11:10 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:10 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> i have big plans for this lathe
11:11 PM Tom_shop: capn, uname -a
11:11 PM Tom_shop: Linux debian 6.1.0-22-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.94-1 (2024-06-21) x86_64 GNU/Linux
11:11 PM Tom_shop: starting fresh
11:11 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> limit switches, spindle control, flood cooling
11:11 PM xxcoder: way to go ffff
11:14 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> "so they're all on opto isolators" DM542T are, yes. says so in the datasheet. same as on my machine
11:14 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/BGKgtZGtyIWKcxtEtiXBbvts/lcnc-04Jul2024-744.png

11:20 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/NTULINUX/CAPN_FILES/I5_new_RTAI.png
11:20 PM Tom_L: after just a few min
11:20 PM Tom_L: on the i5 with no settings
11:20 PM Tom_L: but
11:20 PM Tom_L: it installed and runs
11:21 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> \0/
11:21 PM Tom_L: took under 3 min... but i had 12 on already
11:21 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> Debian 12 takes maybe 10 minutes to install
11:22 PM Tom_L: did the purge and installed the debs
11:22 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/RTAI_TEST/RTAI_I5_Histogram.png
11:22 PM xxcoder: I wonder how compitable LMDE would be
11:23 PM Tom_L: that was with the last RTAI
11:23 PM Tom_L: same pc
11:23 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> so you and I are the only ones with those debs, don't tell anyone
11:23 PM Tom_L: shhhh
11:23 PM Tom_L: i have them on my server as a backup
11:24 PM lcnc-relay: <Travis Farmer> i heard that
11:24 PM xxcoder: black project debs
11:24 PM Tom_L: i said SHHHH!
11:24 PM Tom_L: :)
11:24 PM Tom_L: i'll try flex on it on a fresh brain
11:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> can JT post them to the downloads page of linuxcnc.org https://linuxcnc.org/downloads/
11:25 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> or is that an Andy thing?
11:25 PM Tom_L: i don't know if he still has access or not
11:26 PM Tom_L: i can ask him in the AM
11:26 PM Tom_L: he's mobile right now
11:34 PM Tom_L: running flex on it locked up the pc though
11:36 PM Tom_L: axis sim works
11:37 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> xxcoder: " how compatible LMDE would be" with what?
11:37 PM Tom_L: wonder wtf is up with flex
11:37 PM xxcoder: setuo for lcnc, like with rt kernel and all
11:37 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/aZlHdFcyuprDsXhcEtGESBFo/IMG_0082.jpg
11:37 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> is there no way to get gmocappy to fit on my small monitor?
11:38 PM Tom_L: use axis silly
11:38 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> i was using that before but google said people like this one
11:38 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> what’s this one for?
11:38 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> some GUI's just have a minimum res that YOU need to support
11:39 PM Tom_L: cause google knows everything!
11:39 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> 🤣🤣
11:39 PM lcnc-relay: <captainhindsight_.> AXIS just about always works
11:39 PM Tom_L: are you running preempt-rt?
11:39 PM lcnc-relay: <ffffrf> ok i’ll go back to axis
11:40 PM Tom_L: kids these days...
