01:03 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> I am having trouble installing, I pick graphic install and get all the way to install the system and it fails, I have tried re partitioning mulitple times keeps failing.
01:16 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> trying to install from usb, runs fine in live mode, but I cant get it to actually install.
01:16 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> installing to a laptop
01:50 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> what is your error?
01:50 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> can you take a picture or something?
01:52 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> i had the same issue when partitionning and this was due to the boot method.
01:53 AM lcnc-relay: <vibram> You have to select the UEFI boot if available. This solved my issue

04:24 AM Tom_L: morning
05:05 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:18 AM JT-Cave: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XZ_Utils_backdoor
05:18 AM JT-Cave: wow
05:34 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> Morning
05:35 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> <-- just woke up... again 🙂
06:29 AM Scopeuk: the XZ thing was really impressive technically but was an integration issue caught at integration test, the system sort of worked as it should
06:45 AM JT-Shop_ is now known as JT-Shop
06:45 AM * JT-Shop puts on his biker shorts and goes for a ride
08:21 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> kinda glad we don't have a LinuxCNC cycle team... i would be at the bottom of the barrel, as far as stats... 😉
08:28 AM bjorkintosh: pfft. hold my beer.
08:28 AM * bjorkintosh just sits there.
08:57 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Starlink went down for about 20 minutes last night.. world wide.
08:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (still better than the centurytel dsl)
08:58 AM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> (and hughesnet)
09:16 AM * JT-Cave did 9 miles this morning
09:17 AM JT-Cave: two tin cans and a string is better than hughesnet
09:20 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> <-- did zero miles, and could not care less anymore... gave up on hopes and dreams...
09:44 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> sorry for the rant... i'll see myself out...
09:45 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> travis_farmer: hey, don't fret about it....
10:08 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> Jeff Stepped down?
10:11 AM JT-Woodshop: quite a while back
10:12 AM lcnc-relay: <satiowadahc#0> interesting. I just seen the mailing list, he's put a lot of good code in.
10:22 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> hi everyone, new to linuxcnc
10:23 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> when I try to open a gcode file it doesnt show up in the folder, looks like its looking for a picture file?
10:24 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> it wont show any gcode files unless I make it show all files.. but default is .jpg ect
10:26 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> looks like the default file is .ngc ... Do i need to use a different post processor?>
10:27 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> redeye_joe: are you trying to open a file via linuxcnc? or a file manager?
10:27 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/config/ini-config.html#sub:ini:sec:filter
10:27 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> trying to open a file in linuxcnc
10:27 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> travis_farmer: right on
10:29 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> redeye_joe: some posts us .nc they aren't recognized unless you add the extension in the Filters section PROGRAM_EXTENSION = ....... whatever extensions you want
10:31 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> or change the post to use .ngc
10:31 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> oh, watch the case. upper and/or lower linux is case sensitive
10:33 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> PROGRAM_EXTENSION = .NGC,.ngc covers both
10:34 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> what travis said...
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> mine reads:
10:35 AM lcnc-relay: PROGRAM_EXTENSION = .ngc,.nc,.tap G-Code File (_.ngc,_.nc,*.tap)
10:38 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> <-- has to go see a colon surgeon in an hour, for some "issues"...
10:38 AM lcnc-relay: should be fun...
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> travis_farmer: hey, do not look around the office at the equipment....
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> trust me, i won't... lol
10:39 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> I helped design a semi-robotic colonoscope.....
10:40 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> drop your shorts and smile....
10:40 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> rather not... lol
10:40 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> ok, I have lots of reading to do, my post processor I have been using for my other machines, post as .gcode
10:41 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> then:
10:41 AM lcnc-relay: PROGRAM_EXTENSION = .gcode
10:42 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> as long as the post is for LinuxCNC or EMC2, the extension does not really matter
10:54 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> ok, I got it to recognize the .gcode files, but it gives error when I open one, I need to find another pp for aspire and linuxcnc
11:00 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> thank you, I have got one that is working
11:01 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> good luck
11:02 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> thanks 🙂
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <redeye_joe> i had to do a colonoscopy about a month ago, the laxative "prep" was the worse part
11:03 AM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> had one of those... these are other "issues"
11:25 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, might take a peek in devel
12:12 PM JT-Shop: interesting
12:47 PM * Loetmichel is a bit crazy sometimes. Designing, milling, folding and (re-)assembling a Laptop PSU enclosure out of 1,5mm alu in 3.5 hours. I think thats a record. No documentation though. That will be fun for next monday. :-(
01:20 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, any more progress with flex?
01:21 PM JT-Shop: gave up... for now
01:23 PM Leeloo: Any ideas of the num_samples parameter to halscope? Does it do anything? I tried it and nothing changed pretty much - did not extend the capture time...
01:26 PM JT-Shop: number of samples will change the number of channels that can be watched
01:37 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: are there no mil-spec laptops made anymore?
01:38 PM CaptHindsight: you mentioned PSU, but doesn't that come with the laptop?
01:39 PM Leeloo: Hmm, when I tried it, I got 4000 samples for 4 channels with and without the parameter. I thought that maybe I will get a longer buffer longer time of capture, but that did not happen. To get longer time, I had to change the multiplier, but that decreases sample size from 1KHz down.
01:40 PM CaptHindsight: redeye_joe: just wait until they want to do an ultrasound guided prostate biopsy, your prep will of felt like a holiday :)
01:40 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: mil-spec isnt the problem. EMI-Shielded is.
01:40 PM CaptHindsight: the EMI shield is not part of the mil-spec?
01:40 PM * Loetmichel took a HP 17" notebook and made new enclosure for it. AND its PSU
01:40 PM CaptHindsight: interesting
01:41 PM Loetmichel: took 2 times 80h to mill the two halves of the base out of 20mm stock alu. And another 30h for the display frame out of a 10mm plate.
01:42 PM CaptHindsight: on a 6040 CNC mill?
01:42 PM Loetmichel: yep.
01:42 PM XXCoder: weight is never a problem, just get a private to carry it
01:42 PM Loetmichel: they are NOT made for rapid material removal ;)
01:43 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: did you company expand recently?
01:43 PM CaptHindsight: I lose track of time
01:43 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: that thing has now 5.5kg. We joked "its also good for batting the enemy with if you run out of ammo!"
01:43 PM XXCoder: lol
01:43 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: we got bought by Bechtle a bit more than a year ago.
01:45 PM CaptHindsight: ah ok
01:45 PM CaptHindsight: for the better? :) no need to reply
01:45 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: that was the lower half of the base when milling the plug holes in the back. For size comparsion: the 6040 has ~500mm gantry width:
01:45 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=18164&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
01:46 PM Loetmichel: Better? hmmm. Well at least i got a bit of a raise out of it. AND some semblance of "procedures" are slowly infused into the company :)
01:54 PM XXCoder: nice. some sanity in process is good also
01:55 PM CaptHindsight: I was looking into making laptops with metal enclosures, comparing machined from billet vs cast+machined vs 3D print etc etc
01:57 PM CaptHindsight: function over form but still having some style
01:58 PM XXCoder: it can be both metal milled and 3d printed parts. 3d printer would be perfect for adopting stuff inside enclosure
01:58 PM XXCoder: or spacers etc
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: but this seems to be all most people want https://frame.work/blog/mainboard-availability-and-open-source-release
01:59 PM XXCoder: wow expensive
01:59 PM CaptHindsight: they don't care much about open firmware or privacy
02:02 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: but you can upgrade all the features if the enclosure survives
02:03 PM XXCoder: lol
02:03 PM CaptHindsight: https://frame.work/products/laptop16-amd-7040 starting at $1400
02:03 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: i asked framwork if they would provide Notebooks/parts. Apparently we are not even worth an answer other than "order the ones you want, we will not send disassembled though" if your volume is <1000 a year.
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: I have a thinkpad with similar Ryzen 7 and 40BG ram and paid <$400
02:04 PM Loetmichel: would have been better than disassembling mainstream Notebooks because of long term aviability/compability.
02:04 PM XXCoder: isnt there sites where you can order laptop parts?
02:05 PM Loetmichel: framework notebooks server a different clientele than "want a cheap throwaway NB" folks.
02:05 PM CaptHindsight: Loetmichel: you need someone like me to get you the assemblies that you need
02:05 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: point is that we dont want to redesign/recertify the notebooks every half a year when the old one is out of stock, so framework would have been nice. No dice though.
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: or visit Computex and find vendors
02:06 PM Loetmichel: problem is the small volume. We'll probably sell less than 100 a year.
02:06 PM Loetmichel: aka: not interesting for standard "mass producers"
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: it's worth a flight to Shenzhen, you can find it all there in any volume
02:07 PM XXCoder: loet yeah. thats what I meant on finding good hardware store, one that supplies same parts for long enough that it can last 2 years or whaever long you need it
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: if you can stand to be in China
02:09 PM Loetmichel: me being in china isnt the problem. Long term stability is.
02:09 PM XXCoder: I wobnder if can buy like 300
02:09 PM XXCoder: last 3 years
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: https://medium.com/chinafacture/huaqiangbei-the-biggest-electronics-market-in-the-world-shenzhen-china-3ec66e5d2df0
02:09 PM CaptHindsight: you just buy 3 years worth
02:10 PM XXCoder: that store area seems to be very much buyer beware
02:10 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: An Sdip LevelA cert takes our engineer 4-6 weeks, including about a week in the measurement chamber. Certifying a new model (and it IS a new model every time a screw changes from phillips to torx!) is a PITA.
02:11 PM Loetmichel: Sdip27
02:11 PM XXCoder: I bet. thats why I was wondering if stocking say 3 years is worth it
02:12 PM Loetmichel: it may be. but what if you suddenly get an order of a few extra 100?
02:12 PM Loetmichel: it has happened before.
02:12 PM Loetmichel: Having a "reliable" long term supplier would be preferable.
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: XXCoder: that is what "China" actually directly translates to English as
02:12 PM CaptHindsight: Buyer Beware
02:12 PM XXCoder: definitely better
02:12 PM XXCoder: hah
02:13 PM CaptHindsight: you get reliable parts by building up relationships with the sellers
02:13 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight: in my experience: China is only "buyer beware" if you want the cheapest of the cheap stuff. If you are willing to pay more you can get quality, too.
02:14 PM XXCoder: if I recall on china culture, if you pay too little they will cut stuff out rather than refuse to make
02:14 PM Loetmichel: They just have no "low quality honor cutoff". Still a high volume market though
02:14 PM CaptHindsight: it's more like, if you don't notice and complain then it was fine
02:14 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: exactly.
02:15 PM Loetmichel: "Yeah, i can make that for that price, no problem!" (thinking: "it'll be crap but thats not my problem")
02:15 PM CaptHindsight: noticing and complaining is the buyers job
02:15 PM Loetmichel: also true, CaptHindsight
03:33 PM Leeloo: Another way of looking at it is that they are very proud of optimizing cost of anything: it's not exactly malicious, it's just a sense of accomplishment if something does some job at the lowest price possible.
03:33 PM Leeloo: It may not check all the boxed for everyone, and they could make it check those boxes, but not at that price.
03:33 PM Leeloo: boxes*
04:06 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:14 PM * JT-Shop wished Kurt was still around... I know he could solve the problem
04:16 PM Tom_L: ?
04:33 PM JT-Shop: opengl
04:34 PM JT-Shop: Kurt wrote pyqtvcp
04:44 PM Connor: Anyone recommend a good spoilboard bit? Looking for one with inserts vs cemented carbide. 1.5" to 2" would be good. Will be used on a 4hp up to 24k RPM
04:44 PM Connor: Have a 4 tooth cemented one, but, it looks like it's more for hardwoods.
04:45 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> on my way to my appointment, my truck told me "Service 4WD System" and made an intermittent grinding noise like putting an auto trans into park while rolling at high speed... not a sound you want to hear an hour from home...
04:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> https://jauriarts.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/aXNGGptwqIXPPDAtFQbvZkUh/PXL_20240529_210409967.jpg
04:45 PM lcnc-relay: <skunkworks8841> Need cheap brushing blades? 😉
04:50 PM roycroft: i don't think i've relayed my vehicle woes of late here
04:51 PM roycroft: last week i spent $1500 on a new catalytic converter and tune-up for my prius
04:51 PM roycroft: two days later i got a code indicating that the inverter water pump had failed
04:52 PM roycroft: after i paid $150 for diagnistics i was informed that i need another $1500 repair immediately, and like an additional $4k repair soon thereafter
04:52 PM roycroft: this on a vehicle with 250k miles
04:52 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> got my car smog checked today....every 2 years her in Cal
04:52 PM roycroft: so now i no longer own a prius
04:52 PM JT-Shop: you dumped it or sold it?
04:52 PM XXCoder: my car last had oil change in 2022, and mileages is still few k below oil change miles lol
04:52 PM roycroft: yesterday, when i should have been packing for my move, i spent the day buying a new car
04:52 PM roycroft: i traded it in
04:53 PM XXCoder: I should go do oil change soon though
04:53 PM XXCoder: my car is currently at 53k miles. bought it at 29k
04:53 PM roycroft: i now own a 2012 hyundai veloster
04:53 PM XXCoder: errm 19k
04:53 PM lcnc-relay: <travis_farmer> i can't afford whatever is wrong with my truck 😦
04:53 PM roycroft: which gets 39mpg on the highway
04:53 PM JT-Shop: car manufacturers recommend an oil change every year
04:53 PM roycroft: so almost as good as the prius was getting
04:53 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> My MBZ is down to minimum maintenance. next major problem, and it's gone
04:53 PM roycroft: every year or every x thousand miles, whichever comes first
04:54 PM JT-Shop: usually 5k or every year
04:54 PM roycroft: i don't drive my pickup much, and although i've owned it for a year and a half, i haven't changed the oil
04:54 PM XXCoder: I usually go for past date, and half of miles between oil change miles and due mileage
04:54 PM XXCoder: which is fine when its very low mileage
04:54 PM JT-Shop: I had an interesting conversation with a service advisor who told me I should get the free first service at 5k
04:55 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> shop rates around here are getting close to $200 / hour
04:55 PM roycroft: the pickup takes 15 quarts of synthetic oil
04:55 PM XXCoder: I do 2k miles a year nowdays
04:55 PM roycroft: i've put 3500 miles on it, the last 1000 miles in the past month or so
04:55 PM JT-Shop: I told him the recommended first oil change and trans flush must be done at 7.5k +-500
04:55 PM roycroft: and once i finish moving, i will put very few miles on the pickup
04:56 PM XXCoder: jt isnt it 100k miles for trans oil?
04:56 PM roycroft: engine technology has gotten a lot better in that regard
04:56 PM JT-Shop: oil change on the C8 is only $20 labor
04:56 PM roycroft: in The Olden Days(tm)
04:56 PM JT-Shop: the C8 has a Dual Clutch 8 speed transmission
04:56 PM roycroft: meaning as late as the '70s
04:56 PM JT-Shop: not an automatic
04:57 PM roycroft: a brand new car needed its first oil change on very few miles - usually 500-1500 miles
04:57 PM XXCoder: I doubt I will ever own a brand new car
04:57 PM roycroft: but these days that kind of break-in oil change is not needed
04:57 PM JT-Shop: my daughters rav4 was acting up and she had the trans oil changed and the filter cleaned and it runs as expected now
05:01 PM JT-Shop: the chevy tech does a special procedure to flush trans oil through the filter to collect any stuff, when the Chief designer was asked about that for DIY's he said they just do it because they can and DIY's don't need to worry about it
05:06 PM Tom_L: do they flush the converter too?
05:06 PM JT-Shop: the flux converter?
05:06 PM Tom_L: on the transmission
05:07 PM JT-Shop: there is no converter, it's a dual clutch transmission
05:07 PM Tom_L: oh
05:07 PM JT-Shop: odd gears on one shaft and even on the other
05:09 PM JT-Shop: gears are shifted ahead of time so only the clutches have to swap shafts simultaneously
05:09 PM JT-Shop: actually shifting is super fast and at no time is there no power to the wheels
05:11 PM JT-Shop: https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/a29758062/c8-corvette-dual-clutch-dct-tremec-technical-specs-analysis/
05:14 PM Tom_L: fancy
05:18 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:24 PM Tom_L: i bet that would cost a mint to rebuild
05:25 PM JT-Shop: they don't fix them, they just replace it
05:25 PM JT-Shop: about 10k for the tremec dct plus labor to change
05:26 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:26 PM Tom_L: since it's dual clutch i wonder if they use synchronizer rings too
05:26 PM Tom_L: i doubt it
05:27 PM Tom_L: like the old manual transmissions had
05:27 PM JT-Shop: I have no clue :)
05:27 PM JT-Shop: I'm hoping I never find out
05:27 PM Tom_L: i never will :)
05:28 PM JT-Shop: I used to rebuild the 3 speed cast iron tranny on my `80 C10 Custom Deluxe a few times
05:28 PM Tom_L: it must be a 3rd party part
05:28 PM Tom_L: https://www.tremec.com/anexos/TREMEC_TR-9070.pdf
05:28 PM JT-Shop: I had a collection of parts and would scatter them all out and pick the best ones lol
05:28 PM Tom_L: not the same tranny but the company
05:30 PM JT-Shop: interesting the C8.R doesn't use a tremec they use a UK 6 speed
05:30 PM Tom_L: huh
05:30 PM JT-Shop: the racing limit for lemans type racing is 6 speeds
05:31 PM JT-Shop: and with an air intake restricted the max hp is around 500
05:31 PM Tom_L: i'm sure they had that in mind when designing it
05:32 PM JT-Shop: racing has a lot of restrictions
05:32 PM Tom_L: getting to be too many nowdays imo
05:33 PM Tom_L: depending on the circuit
05:33 PM JT-Shop: they are designed to make the cars the same so the driver is the difference
05:34 PM JT-Shop: https://media.gm.com/media/intl/en/chevrolet/vehicles/c8r/2020.html
05:34 PM Tom_L: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-e&q=tremec+dct+exploded+view#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:e8c4198c,vid:_AjFadNxmy4,st:0
05:34 PM Tom_L: not the same tranny but dual clutch
05:35 PM Tom_L: triple cone synchronizers
05:39 PM JT-Shop: it's pretty amazing
05:48 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
06:53 PM rdtsc_away is now known as rdtsc
08:27 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as unterhausen
08:28 PM unterhausen: microsoft decided that they should change the desktop background on windows computers many times per day
08:35 PM Tom_L: why not?
08:42 PM XXCoder: can do same on linux xfce
09:09 PM unterhausen: it's just weird when you're sitting at your computer and the background changes. Seems like once a day would be more reasonable
09:09 PM bjorkintosh: you can turn that 'feature' off.
09:10 PM unterhausen: apparently, I have a microsoft streak
09:12 PM XXCoder: I loved it till I realized that I basically never see desktop
09:13 PM unterhausen: right, it's just a border around my open windows
09:13 PM unterhausen: almost totally lost on me, like the pictures in Alice's restaurant
09:14 PM unterhausen: case of blind justice
09:14 PM unterhausen: tbh, the button on the desktop that tells you what you are looking at is a nice touch
09:15 PM unterhausen: rn, it's the cotopaxi volcano, ecuador
09:23 PM roycroft: the 28 8x10 color glossy photos with circles and arrows and a a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was?
09:23 PM roycroft: er, 27, not 28
