07:27 AM linuxcnc-build: build #24 of 1660.rip-buster-python3 is complete: Failure [4failed compile] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/1660.rip-buster-python3/builds/24 blamelist: Chris Morley <chrisinnanaimo@hotmail.com>
08:08 AM rene_dev_: TurBoss did you try qtpyvcp with python3? I can help making it 2/3 compatible
09:21 AM linuxcnc-build: build #6820 of 0000.checkin is complete: Failure [4failed] Build details are at http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/0000.checkin/builds/6820 blamelist: Chris Morley <chrisinnanaimo@hotmail.com>
09:54 AM rene_dev_: seb_kuzminsky when does the slave recompile? I fixed this: http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/1660.rip-buster-python3
10:50 AM highoctane: Anyone ever have linuxcnc freeze when you press the Ok button after choosing a configuration from the opening configuration screen?
10:51 AM highoctane: I'm trying to run the simulator after building from source on Ubuntu 14.04
10:52 AM rene_dev_: 14.04 is EOL
10:53 AM highoctane: What version of Ubuntu is linuxcnc up-to-date with these days?
10:56 AM rene_dev_: if you are compiling from source, you can use any modern version
10:56 AM rene_dev_: debian buster has official support
11:01 AM highoctane: Ok. Great. I'll try building for that
11:02 AM highoctane: just so I'll know for the future: In the case of a situation like I described, where the system hangs, but there are no errors in the terminal (I started from the terminal), are there logs I can review to look for the source of the problem?
11:04 AM rene_dev_: Rtai or rt preempt?
11:06 AM highoctane: That brings up a question: I'm new to the whole realtime thing, and since I am running the simulator, will the realtime kernel be part of the equation in my case?
11:18 AM rene_dev_: no, in that case you are running uspace, which works the same as rt preempt
11:18 AM rene_dev_: so all errors are printed to the terminal
11:18 AM rene_dev_: how do you get it to hang?
11:20 AM highoctane: I run linuxcnc from terminal, it opens the configuration chooser. After choosing one of the sim configurations I want to run, I click ok. That's when it locks up. The GUI of the config chooser stays present on-screen, but no UI elements respond and it never goes any further
11:20 AM highoctane: Is there a "verbose" mode that will print more info to the console?
11:21 AM Tom_L: if you run it from a terminal i think there is
11:22 AM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/user/starting-linuxcnc.html
11:22 AM highoctane: I found it.
11:22 AM rene_dev_: run linuxcnc and pass it a ini directly, bypassing the chooser
11:22 AM rene_dev_: linuxcnc conf/sim/axis.ini
11:23 AM Tom_L: -v
11:26 AM TurBoss: rene_dev_: thanks rene_dev_ I'll give a try in a while
11:26 AM TurBoss: so many thanks you are doing a great job!
11:27 AM highoctane: Thanks Tom_L for the tip on that verbose option. rene_dev_ passing the ini directly did the trick
11:31 AM highoctane: Strange, it even works now normally: `linuxcnc` with no additional parameters. I don't know what the problem was
11:32 AM highoctane: The worst kind of problem... when a problem seems to resolve but you don't know what fixed it
11:32 AM highoctane: :-)
11:37 AM highoctane: Another smaller issue: Any of you ever get errors running dmesg? Like this one: `dmesg: klogctl failed: Operation not permitted`
11:40 AM Tom_L: echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/dmesg_restrict
11:40 AM Tom_L: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/current-$dmesg-klogctl-operation-not-permitted-868186/
11:40 AM Tom_L: also on askubuntu
11:45 AM highoctane: When running that, even as root, I get `bash: /proc/sys/kernel/dmesg_restrict: Read-only file system`
11:45 AM highoctane: Looks like it might be a docker issue... looking into it
11:49 AM highoctane: Had to run my docker container in privileged mode, dmesg works now. Thanks for the help guys!
11:50 AM highoctane: Have a great afternoon
05:05 PM highoctane: What is the best version of python to use with linuxcnc on buster?
05:09 PM rene_dev_: python3 was just added a few days ago, and not everything works. so depends on what you need, and if you want to experiment and help to find bugs.
05:10 PM highoctane: Which version of python3 are you wanting to debug?
06:35 PM rene_dev_: Any
