09:12 AM jepler: seb_kuzminsky: thanks!
09:14 AM jepler: is this tracked by a debian bug somewhere? just in case you have that link ready
09:54 AM seb_kuzminsky: i looked for a debian bug and didn't see it
09:57 AM jepler: me too
09:57 AM jepler: do you think this is new in r11, or has been there all along but you tested on different hardware?
09:58 AM seb_kuzminsky: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=842422
09:58 AM seb_kuzminsky: i bet it's been there all along
10:00 AM jepler: thanks! please note that debian bug in a comment or something
10:00 AM seb_kuzminsky: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=835553
10:02 AM seb_kuzminsky: looks like there are three proposed workarounds:
10:03 AM seb_kuzminsky: a kernel command-line argument, the udev symlink, and a NM configuration tweak
10:03 AM seb_kuzminsky: i tested the udev rule file symlink and it Worked For Me
10:03 AM seb_kuzminsky: on the one usb wifi dongle i tried
10:13 AM seb_kuzminsky: testing it now, PR in a bit if it works
10:24 AM jepler: thanks for working on that
10:24 AM jepler: I wanted to build a new image due to a new kernel security update anyway
11:51 AM jepler: forum update & likely reboot..
11:51 AM jepler: yup there's a kernel in there
11:55 AM jepler: and we're (long since) back
12:40 PM skunkworks: jepler: you have run bumblebee on debian? did you follow a guide? (I can get it to work on ubuntu - not on debian yet)
01:05 PM jepler: skunkworks: I used to run it on a couple of my computers -- one desktop, one laptop. It doesn't seem to work anymore for me.
01:05 PM jepler: I just run nvidia full time on desktop and intel full time on my laptop
01:28 PM rene_dev_: Jepler is there a easy way of shipping a recent rt preempt kernel? It has much better latency, especially on older hardware
01:30 PM pcw_mesa: http://freeby.mesanet.com/8300-4.18.png
01:31 PM pcw_mesa: noticeably better on my old clunkers
02:03 PM skunkworks: jepler: thanks!
02:29 PM -!- #linuxcnc-devel mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:12 PM jepler: rene_dev_: I don't have enough time in the day to build kernels, but stretch has a 4.9-rt kernel, and sometimes debian testing and/or sid have newer options than that.
04:12 PM jepler: not to mention backports, but we've been bitten before by -rt kernels disappearing from backports
04:13 PM jepler: (when kernels without rt patches enter testing)
04:13 PM rene_dev_: building the kernel is easy, if you are a developer, and build kernels before... I just dont know what it takes to package them
04:14 PM rene_dev_: because you cant expect users to do that...
04:14 PM jepler: no, I absolutely don't expect users to do that
04:14 PM hazzy-m: Tom_L: worte a script that made it so even I could install the newest rt-preempt kernel with no trouble
04:14 PM jepler: I mean, I can't be bothered to do it, why should they?
04:14 PM jepler: but the one that ships with debian stretch ain't bad
04:14 PM rene_dev_: yeah :D
04:14 PM jepler: https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=linux-image-rt-amd64 4.18 is in backports, but we won't ship one from backports on our install media due to the aforementioned biting
04:16 PM rene_dev_: ah, ok
04:17 PM rene_dev_: so its not really difficult to install that
04:17 PM rene_dev_: if users run into problems
04:18 PM jepler: wellll it could disappear from backports at any moment, and installing from archive-of-backports is too much pain for anyone to endure
04:18 PM jepler: (it's likely to soon after 4.19 enters testing)
04:18 PM rene_dev_: yeah, I remember the jessie kernel dissapearing... why is that?
04:18 PM jepler: because that's how debian backports works. I can't tell you in any more detail than that.
04:19 PM jepler: ah not archive, but snapshot. https://emergent.unpythonic.net/01466682649
04:20 PM jepler: (I could try to tell you more, but I risk just being wrong ;-P)
05:02 PM jepler: Debian "Buster" freeze schedule announced. https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2018/09/msg00004.html
05:12 PM pcw_mesa: buster is 11?
06:22 PM seb_kuzminsky: stretch is 9, buster is 10
06:25 PM pcw_mesa: Ahh
06:30 PM KimK: I couldn't remember which toy Buster was, had to look it up. Guess he's not a toy: http://pixar.wikia.com/wiki/Buster
09:14 PM jepler: "-r2" has the interface naming fix from seb_kuzminsky and also has new "SUMS" files for checking the integrity of your download. http://www.linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/
09:14 PM jepler: er, "-r12"
09:14 PM jepler: and also the last security updates, including a kernel update (still 4.9.x)
09:16 PM Tom_L: you don't know who Small Shop Concepts is do you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjVQ_Go6Mxg
09:50 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
10:14 PM hazzy-m: Tom_L: I chat with Small Shop Concepts all the time, lol
10:14 PM hazzy-m: he's working on the GUI with me
10:14 PM Tom_L: lcvette?
10:14 PM hazzy-m: hey, he stole my vidoe, LOLOLO
10:14 PM hazzy-m: yes
10:15 PM Tom_L: i kinda thought it might be
10:16 PM hazzy-m: he's done some really nice work
10:16 PM Tom_L: yeah
10:16 PM Tom_L: did he ever get his new mill going?
10:17 PM hazzy-m: no, he's waiting for the GUI
10:17 PM Tom_L: will it require hal changes?
10:17 PM Tom_L: it looks nice
10:17 PM Tom_L: i'd like to try it if i can convert things easy enough
10:18 PM hazzy-m: no, not for most things, but if you want the ATC to be animated and things like that yes
10:18 PM Tom_L: no atc here
10:19 PM hazzy-m: then it should be a direct replacment for axis/gmoccapy etc.
10:19 PM hazzy-m: it's not ready for prime time quite yet though
10:20 PM Tom_L: i know
10:20 PM hazzy-m: getting close though, I've been working on it since 6:30 this morening, trying to crunch and get it usable
10:21 PM hazzy-m: I have several machines I'd like to use it on
10:21 PM Tom_L: how will it install to a current working install?
10:22 PM hazzy-m: if you are running 2.8 then you just replace axis with probe_basic for DISPLAY
10:22 PM Tom_L: 2.7.14 iirc
10:23 PM Tom_L: on wheezy :)
10:23 PM hazzy-m: Ok. it only works with master running on newer distros like stretch and ubuntu
10:24 PM Tom_L: counts me out then. the hardware on the mill is too slow to run stretch
10:24 PM Tom_L: preempt-rt right?
10:24 PM hazzy-m: yes
10:25 PM hazzy-m: do you use the parport?
10:25 PM Tom_L: i've got it on my test machine but the mill has wheezy on it
10:25 PM Tom_L: parport to a mesa card
10:25 PM Tom_L: the test machine is ether
10:27 PM hazzy-m: iv'e been surprised how well preempt does on older hardware, but it realy depends on what you have
10:27 PM Tom_L: i tried it and it sucked
10:27 PM hazzy-m: runs fine on my old atom
10:28 PM Tom_L: i think that's what i've got out there
10:28 PM Tom_L: a D525
10:30 PM hazzy-m: yeah, that's what I have too. The machine runs just fine, but the latency numbers are not great, but I use mesa cards so not very critical
10:31 PM Tom_L: it was working good so i didn't really wanna screw it up
10:32 PM hazzy-m: yes, I entirety sympathize with that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
10:33 PM skunkworks: rt_preempt is pretty cool
10:33 PM hazzy-m: I have a newish ATX board for mine, but I just can't bring myself to take it appart to put it in
10:34 PM Tom_L: i've got a nice one in a box i could use but it's not a mini itx which i prefer out there
10:34 PM hazzy-m: skunkworks: It is, and is seems to be getting better and better
10:35 PM skunkworks: lot more exposure helps (now that it is at kernel.org)
10:36 PM Tom_L: i tried that last kernel patch and that made it worse on my test machine
10:36 PM hazzy-m: Yeah, I'm gonna have to rearrange my whole box to fit the ATX in place of the mini :(
10:36 PM Tom_L: i could put a tower out there but i don't have that much spare room
10:36 PM Tom_L: then i could run ethernet
10:37 PM skunkworks: pretty good luck with laptops too... (dont let that get out)
10:37 PM Tom_L: just swap ou the 7i90
10:37 PM Tom_L: heheh
10:37 PM Tom_L: yours seems to do fine
10:37 PM hazzy-m: skunkworks: some of the lowest latency I have seen is on some lenovo laptops, blew me away
10:38 PM skunkworks: yep.. that is what i currently run.
10:38 PM Tom_L: are those fairly new laptops?
10:38 PM skunkworks: https://youtu.be/vzDGVmo3BO4
10:39 PM Tom_L: watched that yesterday
10:39 PM Tom_L: nice
10:39 PM hazzy-m: I have been kinda thinking they were not any good for LCNC, but with ethernet now they are
10:39 PM skunkworks: 3rd gen iirc. i have a 4th gen msi that seems good. but have not tried the nic. think it is qualcomm or however you spell that
10:40 PM hazzy-m: I have a ThinkPad T43 with parport that has very usable latency, but unfortunately it is only 32bit. But fine for wheezy
10:40 PM skunkworks: i7 so overkill
10:41 PM Tom_L: pretty sure mine are both i5
10:41 PM skunkworks: boot the stretch livecd and check out the latency
10:41 PM Tom_L: i'm not even sure what board i have in the stretch test pc now
10:42 PM Tom_L: skylake
10:42 PM Tom_L: in the cad pc
10:43 PM skunkworks: i am so close to getting a working vm with video passthrough... but still not there..
10:44 PM skunkworks: (laptop with 2 video )
10:44 PM Tom_L: so how _do_ you find time to do anything else? :)
10:45 PM skunkworks: good question.
10:46 PM skunkworks: who needs sleep
