[08:29:19] <jepler> Subject: [ANNOUNCE] 4.8-rt1
[08:29:24] <jepler> get on the treadmill again guys
[09:28:16] <seb_kuzminsky> stop! i wanna get off!
[10:01:21] <skunkworks_> 4.8-rt1! I know the lastest that I have doesn't seem to automatically build the kernel modules for virtualbox.
[10:01:59] <skunkworks_> so I boot to a non realtime kernel to run my virtual machines
[10:07:35] <mozmck> I read that 4.8 has some bad bugs
[10:09:46] <mozmck> http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/10/05/linus_torvalds_admits_buggy_crap_made_it_into_linux_48/
[10:12:05] <cradek> I read that linus abuses people who try to contribute to Linux
[10:20:55] <jepler> his behavior is bad and needs to change.
[10:21:21] <jepler> at best it's a relic of a different time in free software development
[10:25:08] <archivist> a good bug on the front page http://linuxcnc.org/ heading is not in h1 tags yet two subheadings are, seo phail
[10:25:42] <jepler> archivist: please consider chipping in, rather than just enumerating our failures.
[10:26:01] <jepler> afk
[10:26:55] <archivist> I just did !!!!!
[10:27:27] <cradek> archivist: if you're on github we can get you set up to edit the website directly
[10:27:34] <archivist> I am not
[10:27:47] <cradek> it would be great if you were
[10:28:13] <archivist> and like I said I dont know how long I am on the net for
[10:28:37] <cradek> even if it's just a few hours I bet you could accomplish some things
[10:29:19] <archivist> github complains about my browser each time I visit
[10:40:17] <seb_kuzminsky> archivist: do you mean the "LinuxCNC" at the top left is not in an H1? it's in a css class called site-title, which is defined in our main.css to look just like that
[10:40:36] <archivist> this line on the front page <a class="site-title" href="/">LinuxCNC</a> is a link to self (a bit silly)
[10:41:22] <archivist> main H1 tag is your page title as read by google
[10:41:44] <seb_kuzminsky> ah, i see what you're saying
[10:42:25] <seb_kuzminsky> having the top "LinuxCNC" be a link to the front page is silly when you're on the front page, but i think it makes sense when you're on one of the other pages (Search, Community, etc)
[10:42:37] <seb_kuzminsky> not having it show up correctly in google is silly no matter what page you're on
[10:42:39] <archivist> so also change news and showcases to h2 or 3
[10:43:31] <archivist> most sites have a home link for that
[10:44:12] <seb_kuzminsky> archivist: if i go to google and type "linuxcnc" into the search bar, the first hit is linuxcnc.org, and the title is "LinuxCNC", which is correct
[10:44:37] <seb_kuzminsky> so i don't see the problem you warned of
[10:44:47] <archivist> you might be lucky with some pages, but there are guides
[10:46:00] <archivist> as one site states "Always include a single H1 tag of the page's primary topic"
[10:46:17] <archivist> Add multiple H2, H3 etc if the page splits into other sub-topics
[10:46:52] <seb_kuzminsky> that does seem like a normal way to do things...
[10:47:20] <seb_kuzminsky> that's how asciidoc generates our docs, for example (when it works)
[11:03:48] <seb_kuzminsky> there was a little accident at work involving a server room, a welder, and a fire suppression system
[11:04:17] <seb_kuzminsky> long story short, i got a free super-beefy server, never been dropped and only soaked once
[11:08:51] <cradek> wow
[15:10:01] <andypugh> OK, so aluminium is an insulator. What is wrong with my multimeter?
[15:28:07] <JT-Shop> lol
[15:34:55] <mozmck> andypugh: that's why they use aluminum for all the power lines - since it's an insulator no one can get shocked if they touch it.
[15:35:38] <andypugh> I had always wondered why they chose aluminium over gold in that application.
[15:36:55] <mozmck> :-)
[15:37:14] <mozmck> gold might be a bit pricey
[15:52:05] <andypugh> I wish I could “approve” posts without “reading” them. ie, let the post appear on the forum, but still have it tagged as unread.
[21:31:41] <skunkworks_> gosh it is nice having a cnc... http://electronicsam.com/images/matsuura/20161007_202449.jpg
[22:59:13] <andypugh> Aye, that would be a challenge by hand
[22:59:58] <andypugh> Though possible with: http://www.lathes.co.uk/beichle/
[23:01:06] <andypugh> (I think that is a 7 axis manual machine)
[23:32:13] <skunksleep> andypugh: that would be painful
[23:33:23] <skunksleep> I mean.. challenging
[23:34:08] <andypugh> Actually, with the Beichle. I suspect the funny-shaped groove would be fairly routine.
[23:39:03] <skunksleep> I should have taken a picture of the other side. The oring Grove follows the other around the casting opening. A few more curves
[23:41:33] <skunksleep> 'the other' should not have been in that sentence...
