[06:45:57] <skunkworks> http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=120519&p=4
[06:52:16] <archivist> skunkworks, I have pointed him at other screens are available!!!!!! still spouts the same....
[06:55:56] <archivist> I have seen the problem of one noisy bugger on a public forum before, I really dont know what the best cure is
[07:20:25] <skunkworks> he complains about how threading doesn't work with x y and z and the system it does work on - he just doesn't like.
[07:21:01] <archivist> grumpy old f
[07:21:21] <skunkworks> and mainly - it doesn't look like mach.
[07:22:42] <archivist> it is the swiss army knife problem, too capable for simpletons
[07:26:36] <cradek> I hate choices. Unless you make the defaults match my preferences exactly, NOTHING WILL MOVE FORWARD!
[07:28:06] <skunkworks> exactly
[07:29:31] <cradek> also, going from "I personally choose not to use it because of my preferences or situation or feelings" to "the project is a failure and you are all failures is
[07:29:42] <jthornton> never argue with an idiot, they bring the conversation down to their level and beat you with experience
[07:29:43] <cradek> " silly
[07:30:03] <cradek> argh phone keyboard
[07:33:07] <archivist> but there is somebody wrong on the internet
[11:09:40] <kirk_wallace> I wonder if this might be handy for a DRO, PLC or some other LinuxCNC'y thing?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/302081376249
[11:13:53] <jepler_> I hate to ask, but what does the "MEN" button do?
[11:25:42] <kirk_wallace> The radio went out in my 92 Explorer. The metal enclosure is potted in solder so I have no motivation to try to fix it. I'm looking for a modern replacement. One problem is that I have a separate amp, so I need a radio with front and back preamp outputs, which is proving to be more difficult than I'd like, but I did come across this Linux radio which got me to thinking about the possibilities.
[11:37:10] <jepler_> clearly you should CNC your Explorer
[11:43:10] <kirk_wallace> I was thinking that Linux makes the radio much less of a radio and more of a box that could be handy for ... whatever.
[12:03:46] <cradek> kirk_wallace: you might be able to get the same radio at a junkyard for a few bucks and be done with it
[12:04:26] <archivist> with the fun of not knowing the security code
[12:04:37] <cradek> hm, was that a thing in 92?
[12:05:22] <archivist> cannot remember when it started, was a long while ago
[12:05:47] <archivist> usually costs a lot at a dealership to get the code
[12:11:31] <kirk_wallace> A code for the radio or CD player?
[12:12:54] <kirk_wallace> I think the original had a cassette player.
[12:29:56] <kirk_wallace> Hm... this looks like the easiest way to go, but not very interesting:

[13:04:53] <JT-Shop> is there an I/O card for the 5i25? or can you use the 7i78 as extra I/O?
[13:08:08] <pcw_home> You can use any standard parallel port breakout (or a 7I75 if you just need TTL level I/O)
[13:11:23] <JT-Shop> thanks
[13:34:42] <cradek> kirk_wallace:
http://catb.org/jargon/html/A/angry-fruit-salad.html
[13:42:15] <kirk_wallace> It's hard to avoid these days.
[14:48:07] <CaptHindsight> WOW, the price of those Linux in dash units has come down
[14:49:26] <CaptHindsight> ah, no more DVD drive, thats why
[14:54:19] <andypugh> I wouldn’t miss a DVD drive in a car. I have never even used a CD drive in a car
[14:58:21] <jepler> yeah with the availibility of AUX jack, USB, and memory card slots, the case for optical media is pretty slim for a technical person
[15:00:01] <andypugh> Wake up grandad! it’s all Wifi and Carplay now!
[15:00:46] <andypugh> (Our new test cars have CarPlay, I am looking forward to playing with it. :-)
[15:01:23] <andypugh> Hey! Maybe I can IRC as I drive :-)
[15:01:28] <cradek> I hope it's the same computer that runs the airbags
[15:01:43] <cradek> that makes it all more interesting
[15:02:34] <mozmck> Yeah, mis-type an IRC command it sets off your air-bag!
[15:02:35] <andypugh> I doubt it is even on the same physical network (to give a serious answer to a jocund statement)
[15:03:00] <cradek> yeah being networked together is enough
[15:03:52] <mozmck> I think I'm going to find me a 60's truck with no computer or airbags - and probably put a diesel in it.
[15:04:11] <cradek> sounds dirty, smelly, and inefficient
[15:04:41] <mozmck> heh, and reliable.
[15:05:03] <mozmck> and diesels are generally more efficient than gas
[15:05:13] <andypugh> 80s diesel would be a better bet. Noisy but efficient. (high MPG, low carbon, High NOx.)
[15:05:23] <cradek> reliability of old cars hasn't been my experience...
[15:05:43] <mozmck> reliability of old diesels is reknowned (sp?)
[15:06:35] <mozmck> I drove an '82 mercedes diesel for years, and it still ran great when I sold it - although it leaked oil and needed a lot of other work.
[15:06:39] <andypugh> Aye, an old rotary-pump diesel is hard to stop. They use them on boats still, they work under water.
[15:06:40] <cradek> ok, the engine will keep running... it's the rest of the car you have to worry about
[15:07:44] <cradek> oh wait - do you get rust down there? you may have a big advantage if not
[15:08:06] <mozmck> Well, not as bad I'm sure as up there :-) No salting of roads down here generally
[15:17:50] <skunkworks> just don't by the GM diesel from the early 80's (if you can even find one that doesn't have cracked blocks..
[15:18:36] <skunkworks> iirc they thought it was a good idea to take their 350 block and convert it to diesel..
[15:18:50] <cradek> totally want:
http://germancarsforsaleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/rabbit0001.jpg
[15:19:10] <cradek> (1980 diesel rabbit)
[15:19:24] <skunkworks> Shirley does too!!
[15:20:13] <cradek> http://germancarsforsaleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/rabbit0040.jpg
[15:20:30] <skunkworks> although it has to be a convertable...
[15:20:42] <cradek> no thank you!
[15:20:47] <cradek> those are a bad idea
[15:21:04] <andypugh> Steering wheel seems to be on the wrong side?
[15:22:07] <kirk_wallace> I have a rabbit diesel engine in my shop. Apparently the early engines were no good. Guess which one I have.
[15:36:40] <mozmck> I want a little 2 cyl diesel for my 23' sailboat!
[15:38:32] <andypugh> Irontopsails is cheating!
[15:39:11] <andypugh> Surely you can just row a 23’ :-)
[15:39:19] <mozmck> heh, I have never even sailed yet, but someone gave me a sailboat
[15:39:39] <andypugh> Nice! What is it?
[15:39:54] <mozmck> it has an OMC saildrive which you can't even get parts for now.
[15:40:03] <mozmck> Pandora 23 made in Argentina
[15:41:39] <andypugh> That actually looks quite a nice little boat
[15:42:07] <mozmck> It really seems to be - where did you find it? I found a few mentions online but not many.
[15:42:22] <mozmck> According to the paperwork it may be the only one in the US
[15:42:44] <andypugh> Generous present:
http://www.4sail.com.ar/aviso/venta-velero-pandora-23-18752
[15:43:17] <andypugh> I just did a Google images search
[15:44:21] <mozmck> Well, it does need work :-) It was full of water when I got it, and the folks needed to get it out of a backyard of a house they were trying to sell.
[15:46:41] <andypugh> Most boats in that class are little more than flating caravans. That one at least _looks_ like it is meant to sail.
[15:47:03] <jepler> wow that's a well-preserved specimen (the rabbit)
[15:47:37] <mozmck> Yeah, It looks pretty neat. I'm planning to replace all the wood (there's not a whole lot of it really), and re-paint it, rebuild the motor, and it shouldn't need much more.
[15:47:59] <mozmck> Apparently it was used for racing for a number of years.
[15:49:09] <mozmck> Then I guess I'll have to learn how to sail :-) I have Lake Texoma about 35 minutes away that is pretty good for that.
[15:50:04] <cradek> jepler: it's been lovingly restored, not preserved
[15:50:55] <jepler> cradek: I stand corrected
[15:51:15] <cradek> fwiw
http://germancarsforsaleblog.com/1980-volkswagen/
[15:51:35] <cradek> I wonder if it really sold for just $8k!
[15:52:21] <andypugh> mozmck: I learned to sail on one of these:
http://keyassets.timeincuk.net/inspirewp/live/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/2014/03/Screen_shot_2014_03_05_at_13.31.15.png Which rather set my expectations of what a Yacht should look and behave like
[15:53:14] <mozmck> Looks neat - a good bit larger than mine!
[15:53:55] <mozmck> what is it?
[15:59:54] <andypugh> It’s a Clipper 60. one of 10 boats custom-built for a round the world race
[16:01:47] <andypugh> I then sailed from China to the US on one of the next batch:
http://www.sail-world.com/photos/sail-world/photos_2012_2/Alt_Derry1.jpg
[16:01:56] <andypugh> (I am in that picture)
[16:02:13] <mozmck> neat!
[16:04:25] <andypugh> Much better than the last time the same boat made the same trip, the big stick fell off:
http://www.sail-world.com/photos/sail-world/photos_2010/Alt_California%20surf%20down%20a%20wave1.jpg That is the same boat. It’s the only picture I have seen that shows how big the waves are.
[16:04:55] <mozmck> big stick fell off - haha! I bet that was not fun!
[16:05:14] <mozmck> those are some waves.
[16:06:24] <andypugh> No, I understand that they had a truly miserable time, 2000 miles under diesel power, bobbing like a cork with no mast and sail to stabilise them and no bits of string to keep them busy.
[16:06:55] <mozmck> wow, that's a long way.
[16:07:01] <andypugh> Aye, it would be fin to photo-composite the two pics to get the wave compared to the Golden Gate Bridge.
[16:07:15] <mozmck> how many are in the crew?
[16:07:27] <andypugh> 18 to 22
[16:07:50] <mozmck> quite a few - I bet you're glad to get back to land!
[16:08:16] <andypugh> 12 is pretty much the bare minimum if running two watches. (6 on a short hop)
[16:08:39] <andypugh> But 12 isn’t enough for the big oceans
[16:09:01] <mozmck> interesting.
[16:09:17] <mozmck> This ship is on lake texoma near me - pretty neat ship:
http://www.sailcompassrose.com/
[16:09:52] <mozmck> they said one owner had it rigged with vacuum control and he sail around the world in it with his sheep dog
[16:12:13] <andypugh> vaccum control is just perverse :-)
[16:12:16] <mozmck> They have it back more original now and I think it takes a crew of 6
[16:13:05] <mozmck> nice chatting, but have to run for now.
