[11:25:42] <kirk_wallace> The radio went out in my 92 Explorer. The metal enclosure is potted in solder so I have no motivation to try to fix it. I'm looking for a modern replacement. One problem is that I have a separate amp, so I need a radio with front and back preamp outputs, which is proving to be more difficult than I'd like, but I did come across this Linux radio which got me to thinking about the possibilities.

[15:05:13] <andypugh> 80s diesel would be a better bet. Noisy but efficient. (high MPG, low carbon, High NOx.)

[15:06:35] <mozmck> I drove an '82 mercedes diesel for years, and it still ran great when I sold it - although it leaked oil and needed a lot of other work.
[15:06:39] <andypugh> Aye, an old rotary-pump diesel is hard to stop. They use them on boats still, they work under water.
[15:06:40] <cradek> ok, the engine will keep running... it's the rest of the car you have to worry about

[15:44:21] <mozmck> Well, it does need work :-) It was full of water when I got it, and the folks needed to get it out of a backyard of a house they were trying to sell.

[15:47:37] <mozmck> Yeah, It looks pretty neat. I'm planning to replace all the wood (there's not a whole lot of it really), and re-paint it, rebuild the motor, and it shouldn't need much more.

It’s the only picture I have seen that shows how big the waves are.
