[10:29:32] <jepler> of course I had to do it: https://emergent.unpythonic.net/files/sandbox/linuxcnc-uspace+xenomai.png
[10:56:13] <JT-Shop> dang that looks good
[12:56:17] <seb_kuzminsky> wow jeff
[13:05:37] <jepler> > The problem with security experts is that they're always right when they say you shouldn't do something -- GvR
[13:22:05] <jepler> http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap160710.html my intuition just doesn't accept that the angular diameter of Jupiter from Earth could be in the range of 1% the moon's, but apparently it is.
[15:12:39] <jepler> whee, that PR updated with Xenomai support
[16:02:11] <jepler> .. xenomai realtime is fine with intel graphics but goes to hell when I use nvidia graphics via optirun
[16:04:27] <jepler> sometimes latency-histogram will print
[16:04:27] <jepler> msg=can't use non-numeric floating-point value as operand of "*"
[16:04:31] <jepler> I wonder why
[16:05:20] <seb_kuzminsky> boo, i bought 5 new disks for use in my backup server, and two have failed in the first month
[16:05:46] <seb_kuzminsky> uspace+jepler = awesome
[16:09:16] <jepler> seb_kuzminsky: ugh ugh ugh
[16:42:47] <pcw_home> jepler: does your latest work mean a single LinuxCNC binary can run on RTAI. Preemt-RT and Xenomai?
[17:39:23] <kwallace> Sorry if this is too far off topic. I'm in the market for a (dirt cheap) laptop. I don't expect to use it with LinuxCNC but it would be nice to do some minor development with it. Any thoughts? This one caught my eye: http://www.ebay.com/itm/152111793529
[17:40:23] <cradek> kwallace: no HDD caddy can be a big pain. it means someone pulled the drive, but didn't unscrew it and snap the case part back in
[17:41:11] <cradek> kwallace: do you have a goodwill nearby that has electronic stuff? we have one in lincoln that's just electronics. you can take a live-boot usb stick with you and try them out until you find one with working wifi etc.
[17:41:32] <kwallace> It looks like the drive is in the bay, but has no cover. I think I can fix that.
[17:42:11] <cradek> duct tape?
[17:42:20] <cradek> did you see that one usb port is destroyed
[17:42:56] <kwallace> The closest electronic anything is an hour and a half drive away.
[17:43:34] <cradek> did you ask nearby friends? I'm pretty sure I could find laptops for $0 by just asking for castoffs
[17:46:31] <kwallace> I think I can fix the USB port, and at $60 I can take a risk, it's just I've zero experience with LinuxCNC and laptops.
[17:47:07] <cradek> for development you can run linuxcnc (uspace build) on any linux with any kernel
[17:47:43] <cradek> the only problem you have with linux on oldish laptops like that one are possibly with the wifi drivers
[17:51:55] <kwallace> I have to take someone to chemo and I have a good chunk of hours to fill. I have been going to the library but their computers run Windows and are usually busy. At worst, I think a travel router might do the WiFi bit.
[17:53:04] <cradek> gosh, hope your chemo works out ok
[17:54:34] <kwallace> The chemo is for my mother, so far it's going pretty well.
[17:55:43] <cradek> oops, I misread
[17:55:48] <cradek> well best wishes anyway
[17:58:28] <kwallace> Oops, I pulled an Andy and "accidentally bought it".
[17:59:00] <JT-Shop> I have to stay off of fleabay for that reason
[18:00:52] <pcw_home> My Dell e6420 runs LInuxCNC pretty well but its more of a $200 Ebay thing
[18:07:02] <kwallace> Hmm this does look better: http://www.ebay.com/itm/172175640462 oh well.
[18:10:15] <pcw_home> Its likely the core duo laptop will run linux fine
[18:10:16] <pcw_home> (but you may have to get a caddy if its really missing)
[18:12:00] <pcw_home> the main thing wrong with the E6420 is its really heavy
[18:12:48] <andypugh> I had an E6420 at work. It was fine. Certainly a lot better in a whole heap of ays then the Panasonic Touchbook that replaced it
[18:14:09] <andypugh> ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-Toughbook-CF-31-i5-2-4GHz-8GB-320G-Gobi2000-GPS-BLK-Win7-touch-242-/322155532136?hash=item4b01f74f68:g:288AAOSwnNBXZEsK ) is one. They have a low resolution resistive touchscreen and the worst trackpad ever fitted to anything.
[18:15:53] <andypugh> I don’t understand the reasoning. We did break a lot of Dells on the job. But we would have had to break 5 each, every year, to make the Toughbook cheaper.
[18:18:35] <andypugh> We spend a lot of time looking at 4000 page pdf documents. The Toughbook touchpad has scrolly-edges that don’t stay turned-off. I think you can guess how annoying it is when after much searching you find the label you want and try to copy it to the clipboard, only to insted randomly scroll to another page in the document…
[18:19:13] <andypugh> (no, jeplet, vi isn’t an option here)
[18:20:22] <skunkworks> I am happy with my lenovo t520.. 2nd gen i7
[18:23:45] <skunkworks> although the onboard nic doesn't play well with uspace
[19:13:11] <jepler> pcw_home: yes in a nutshell
[19:14:45] <jepler> pcw: I expect all drivers but eth and spi to work.
[19:39:59] <cradek> jepler: that's really awesome
[20:54:56] <jepler> let's see what our buildbot thinks of this branch...

[21:56:25] <jepler> kaboom! kaboom! etc
[21:58:32] <jepler> drat, boost lockfree queue is too new to be in our older platforms
[22:20:38] <seb_kuzminsky> this is fun, right?
[22:20:42] <seb_kuzminsky> we're having fun?
[22:20:54] <jepler> how would you determine whether we're having fun?
