[11:23:59] <cradek> the users list was too quiet so someone started talking about donald f. trump
[11:24:32] <seb_kuzminsky> how about that weather?
[11:25:38] <cradek> I was just reading about a wifi-connected battery-operated egg tray
[11:26:00] <seb_kuzminsky> the internet of eggs is coming!
[12:32:29] <CaptHindsight> I was surprised that Los Alamos National Laboratory had not heard of Linuxcnc

[12:54:27] <seb_kuzminsky> cradek: i was evangelizing to you about putting your dot-files in git a few weeks ago...
[12:54:47] <seb_kuzminsky> i just got a merge conflict in my .gitconfig, which struck me as funny
[12:54:48] <cradek> yes I recall
[12:54:52] <cradek> ha
[12:55:02] <seb_kuzminsky> git still ran fine, but it complained about the merge conflict markers, until i resolved it :-)
[12:55:11] <cradek> it's a rabbit hole
[13:14:49] <jepler> oh how bizarre
[13:15:10] <jepler> a non-root, failing chown(1) invocation can remove extended attributes, such as capabilities from a non-owned file
[13:15:14] <jepler> https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=770492
[13:16:07] <cradek> very old ext3 filesystem (originally created as ext2)
[13:16:11] <cradek> wow
[13:16:26] <jepler> affects the first system I tested it on, in the cloud(tm) but I assume it's got a modern filesystem type
[13:16:45] <jepler> /dev/vda1 / ext4 rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,data=ordered 0 0
[13:20:57] <jepler> as you might guess from the way the discussion petered out, it still affects kernel 4.4
[14:01:22] <PCW> I resent that terminology
[14:06:02] <skunkworks_> heh
[14:06:40] <jepler> :-P
[14:06:52] <jepler> but "sammed out" doesn't have the same ring toit
[14:10:48] <linuxcnc-build_> build #368 of 4017.5.deb-wheezy-armhf is complete: Failure [4failed shell_3] Build details are at
http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/buildbot/builders/4017.5.deb-wheezy-armhf/builds/368 blamelist: Sebastian Kuzminsky <seb@highlab.com>
[14:11:13] <cradek> the build is sammed out
[14:16:01] <skunkworks_> hmm. I not liking the direction this is taking...
[14:24:08] <jepler> skunkworks_: man up and peter it out. you don't want to get a reputation for samming.

[20:14:32] <skunkworks> re-assembly
[20:21:06] <andypugh> skunkworks: I may have a more robust encoder mount than you :-)
[20:21:42] <andypugh> (I reckon you are my only competition for that keenly-contested award)
[20:21:48] <skunkworks> heh
[20:22:18] <andypugh> 3 x 3/8” bolts to hold a 1.25” diameter resolver?
[20:22:59] <skunkworks> Nice! Pictures?
[20:23:44] <andypugh> https://picasaweb.google.com/108164504656404380542/Holbrook#6293941691898118434
[20:24:33] <skunkworks> did you hob the timing pullys too?
[20:25:16] <andypugh> It’s the lower pink casting. It used to hold the back-gears, so had real work to do. But even then most lathe manufacturers didnt hang their back-gears on 1.25” shafts with needle roller bearings.
[20:26:05] <andypugh> skunkworks: No, I bought them I don’t have a 3mm pitch XL hob, and they were only £10 each
[20:27:42] <skunkworks> very nice
[20:27:56] <skunkworks> again - the holbrook conversion is a work of art
[20:28:06] <andypugh> The resolver is nice. It has a splined and screwed shaft, and came with all the crimps and mounting screws and the speciall splined tab-washer and nut. it’s clearly an aircraft part, and says “£1450 firm” on the super-rugged packaging.
[20:28:50] <andypugh> Looking round the web, £1450 was actually quite cheap.
[20:28:57] <andypugh> I paid £20…
[20:31:58] <skunkworks> have you threaded with it yet?
[20:41:28] <andypugh> Not yet, in fact that resolver isn’t even wired in yet. I got it all mounted this evening and called it a night.
[20:41:59] <andypugh> And, err, looking at the time, I should have gone to bed then, not now..
[20:43:22] <skunkworks> night!
