[11:16:32] <cradek> arrgh, some sf user sent me an email, but when I reply it bounces. sourceforge is not improving with time.

[21:14:08] <jepler> hm not a lot of skylake-generation motherboards have the good old 33MHz PCI sot
[21:14:34] <Tom_itx> what's a good modern mb to get?
[21:15:28] <jepler> no idea, I haven't bought desktop PC hardware in a few years myself
[21:15:34] <Tom_itx> me either
[21:17:31] <jepler> it's amazing how BAD hardware can be that makes it to market. One particular MB I looked at got 40% 1-star ratings on newegg and 70% 1-star ratings on amazon. "stopped booting after a week" "powers off after 30 seconds without displaying anything" etc
[21:17:52] <jepler> and you can get a 3-star review for "under windows, continuously plays the headphone insertion sound but is OK other than that"
[21:17:59] <jepler> plays the sound continuously, that is
[21:18:10] <Tom_itx> last ones i got were those as rock 1900 boards
[21:18:35] <Tom_itx> kinda slow for a cad pc
[21:18:51] <Tom_itx> the ssd i just got did help
[21:19:46] <Tom_itx> those have sure come down in price
[21:20:48] <jepler> yeah, that is nice
[21:21:07] <jepler> not quite cheap enough to store 15 years of digital photos yet
[21:21:59] <Tom_itx> i didn't think 500G for ~150 was bad
[21:26:45] <jepler> the system I'm shopping for is for gaming first, building software like linuxcnc second. but if I don't get a traditional PCI slot, I can't test on the mesa 5i20 anymore, which is the only example I have of a card that needs a firmware loaded when linuxcnc starts.
[21:27:32] <Tom_itx> i'm not even sure what's out there nowdays.. too far outta the loop
[21:28:01] <jepler> my initial thought was that I could do worse than selecting Intel's current gen CPU, which is Skylake
[21:28:33] <jepler> and that for building software, the 4 core / 8 thread i7-series would be worth the price jump (vs the 4 core / 4 thread i5-series)
[21:29:37] <jepler> but then I started motherboard shopping. and there are just so many bad reviews of the skylake-compatible motherboards which seem to just barely work...
[21:33:55] <Tom_itx> is AMD worth looking at anymore?
[21:34:01] <jepler> e.g., this one:
http://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B012AQGKXC/ (oh it's only 67% 1-star reviews, not 70% as I had claimed)
[21:35:23] <Tom_itx> http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-intel-amd-motherboard,3902.html
[21:35:28] <Tom_itx> i was looking at that a bit
[21:35:34] <jepler> I haven't been looking at AMD this time around. My general impression is that their CPUs are fine for "value" segment but not "performance" segment. and while I hear people like pcw and skunksleep having good luck with intel chips for realtime, I don't hear much about AMDs. but that doesn't mean they aren't OK..
[21:36:01] <jepler> Yeah, that amazon link is to the second one on tom's list
[21:37:42] <Tom_itx> these last couple boards i got were fanless which is nice but i suppose when you get into the perfomance boards it's a requirement
[21:38:47] <jepler> there will be fans
[21:45:25] <skunkworks> it has been a while since I have tested amd motherboards
[21:45:42] <skunkworks> though that is what is running the k&t..
[22:05:47] <jepler> 'night
[22:24:01] <pcw_home> this looks decent though only 6 reviews:

[22:31:17] <Tom_itx> i wonder what jt just got recentl
