[08:21:12] <jepler> good morning
[08:33:06] <JT-Shop> good morning
[09:53:47] <seb_kuzminsky> brr
[09:53:49] <seb_kuzminsky> good morning
[09:54:12] <archivist> afternoon tea time, someone is up late
[09:54:25] <cradek> you're from the future
[10:40:09] <lair82> Good morning guys, have a question about getting my atheros network card configured properly, while compiling a different preempt kernel that pcw gave me. I was having some latency issues, and he had me compile this new kernel, and it is working beautifully, except my wireless NIC is not working, and I just wanted to make sure I was selecting the right options in the xconfig for my wireless card.
[10:41:37] <cradek> I suspect nobody here is going to have that particular expertise, and you're going to end up googling and wading through web forums :-/
[10:43:32] <cradek> in addition to building the kernel, you might have to build firmware-linux-free and/or firmware-linux-nonfree
[10:43:56] <cradek> but if you're not building an actual debian package, I have no idea how you'd do that stuff
[10:45:37] <lair82> I was looking through the driver files for the card, and I see it is an Atheros AR5008 chip, and there are only about a dozen items regarding an atheros chip, here is a screenshot, http://postimg.org/image/pfnne4rb9/
[10:46:34] <cradek> sweet, maybe you're lucky and it's completely in-kernel
[10:46:42] <jepler> "5xxx"
[10:46:48] <jepler> ?
[10:46:53] <cradek> seems like you could turn all those on
[10:46:54] <lair82> cradek, I'm just looking for an educated guess honestly, I was just going to select all of the options regarding atheros, but figured I would ask first, and I haven't heard from pcw, he's MIA
[10:47:17] <pcw_home> Yeah just turn on Atheros in wireless section
[10:47:33] <pcw_home> (that worked on my laptop anyway)
[10:47:42] <mozmck> pcw is probably buried under piles of cards
[10:47:44] <lair82> theres pcw ;)
[10:47:47] <mozmck> oh, there he is!
[10:48:59] <lair82> I don't need to select anything in the options column ?
[10:49:24] <seb_kuzminsky> matt strassler is back to talk about the mysterious signal LHC is seeing at 750 GeV, http://profmattstrassler.com/2015/12/18/so-what-is-it/
[10:49:57] <pcw_home> yeah select the 5xxx cards
[10:51:01] <pcw_home> no harm turning them all on except compilation time
[10:51:15] <lair82> Ok, thank you guys, they just finally gave me the machine back to fix this and and a few other things
[10:52:30] <lair82> Machine has ran like a champ since I applied this new kernel though, not a single rt error since :)
[10:52:48] <pcw_home> avoid Broadcom like the plague needs kernel blobs that cause dreadful latency AFAICT
[10:53:34] <lair82> I like this little rosewill, and it is fairly cheap
[10:53:57] <pcw_home> newer Preemt-RT kernels are quite good (the stock linuxCNC 3.16 kernel is not good for some newer hardware)
[10:54:11] <lair82> worked right out of the box with ubuntu, and debian
[10:54:41] <pcw_home> wireless?
[10:54:42] <cradek> have either of you packaged it?
[10:54:58] <lair82> yes wireless,
[10:55:46] <pcw_home> I just have a build script
[10:57:56] <pcw_home> Linux pcw-G41M-Combo 4.1.13-rt15 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Sun Nov 22 11:31:28 PST 2015 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
[10:57:58] <pcw_home> other than the time it takes, building Preemt-RT kernels is trivial
[10:59:00] <pcw_home> I think by Linux 4.5 the Preempt-RT patch will be mainlined
[10:59:13] <jepler> that would be amazing news
[11:01:25] <pcw_home> just (maybe optimistically) reading between the lines of LKML
[14:36:14] <lair82> pcw_home That did the trick, wireless started up, and connected immediately. Thank You
[14:39:22] <seb_kuzminsky> yay
[20:30:21] <skunkworks> zlog
