11:40 AM aandrew: hah, solved the mystery of why a lot of the outlets in my basement reno were not working - three outlets on three different branches had the little tab that shorts the top outlet and bottom outlet live together were snipped
11:55 AM aandrew: I must have been drunk when installing them, I didn't notice and after systematically going through every outlet and branch I noticed that the problematic branches had one outlet good and the other bad which clued me in
12:20 PM rue_mohr: hmm
12:21 PM rue_mohr: I was too asleep designing a 3d printed thing last night, I have a support right in the way
05:35 PM rue_shop2: rue_mohr, todo: replace caps in jukebox
05:46 PM aandrew: swapped out the zwave in-wall switches with zigbee ones. I dislike zwave and these were also shitty because they would occasionally fall off the network and needed to be power-cycled to get back on which meant flipping a breaker
05:46 PM aandrew: it's amazing how much I generally dislike working with 14/2 and house wiring in general
05:48 PM aandrew: actually maybe I'm just in a shitty mood I don't want to work on anything. I mean I've always had a dislike for residential wiring but lately I'm also just not wanting to work on anything at all
05:51 PM rue_shop2: interesting
05:51 PM rue_shop2: I have a whole box of zwave stuff a guy gave me
05:52 PM rue_shop2: I put it next to the box of X10 stuff
05:52 PM rue_shop2: I should consider some re-braining with esp8266
05:52 PM aandrew: and ESP32C6 can do native zigbee which I find appealing. fuck all these shitty proprietary devices with shit firmware, I can write my own bugs, thank you very fucking much
05:53 PM rue_shop2: why not go full wifi?
05:53 PM aandrew: ESP32 is about as small as I'd go, C6 has zigbee as I mentioned, and all the others (and C6) will do wifi
05:53 PM aandrew: because wifi sucks
05:54 PM rue_shop2: hmm 2m is thicker in person than in openscad
05:54 PM rue_shop2: oh? what makes the wifi suck?
05:54 PM aandrew: you saw the extent of what I have to go through to have a realistic expectation of stable connection, but more than that you've got to have a server working and I feel that's too much to go wrong
05:54 PM rue_shop2: heh, low power bluetooth
05:55 PM aandrew: DHCP down? mqtt down? telegraf down? switch didn't reboot correctly? too many points of failure
05:55 PM rue_shop2: heh, oops, I missed my dimentions by a mile
05:55 PM rue_shop2: hmm
05:55 PM aandrew: zigbee you can bond devices directly too so the mesh controllers' not necessary -- device A sees event, device B can react to it without any other infrastructure
05:55 PM aandrew: heh
05:56 PM rue_shop2: hahaha, its too big anyhow
05:56 PM rue_shop2: damnit
05:57 PM aandrew: I don't even want to work on my irrigation controller. it's just sheer dumb luck that the weather's been so wet that the lawn doesn't need to be watered
05:59 PM aandrew: maybe I'm suffering mild burnout. I don' want to go back to california on the 6th, I don't want to work on any of my contracts, don't want to work on my own shit, bleh.
05:59 PM aandrew: how's your sister cat doing? I'm afraid to ask
07:00 PM rue_shop2: alive, I'm going to check her over carefully tonight, try to give her some water and maybe food
