12:12 AM rifraf: Log!
12:26 AM rifraf: What's the magic word?
04:29 AM rifraf: thanks Tom_L i was complicating things
04:30 AM rifraf: rue_mohr i like your EASY comment, in no rush to get this thing going but interested in knowing more, where should i connect 240V for first test?
04:48 AM Tom_L: also
04:54 AM rifraf: nice, am sure you can but is there a way to search the logs?
04:55 AM rifraf: am so happy, got rid of youtube ads on phone, was wondering why adguard did not work on the phone
04:55 AM rifraf: trying to sleep listening and getting ads all night was really pissing me off
05:01 AM rifraf: got an aliexpress parcel with 20 of the choice $1 $2 crap. some real gems in there, some garbage
05:01 AM rifraf: best thing was it was late, so got $1 back on every item, and it arrived 1 day later :)
05:05 AM rifraf: oh the youtube secret on phone, just use browser to watch instead of stupid youtube app
07:12 AM aandrew: rue_mohr> aha, the laser measure cant be purchased from my location
07:13 AM aandrew: amazon can't ship that to your place? My default shipping address for amazon.ca is vancouver where my wife's apartment is and it didn't see any restriction there?
07:18 AM rifraf: if we can get an oven to 800C surely it can be used to melt aluminium??
07:20 AM rifraf: fuck yeah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMQmkJSP2sE
07:21 AM rifraf: just cannot see it happening on a 10A outlet
07:29 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
07:34 AM rifraf: heh , he did it in a normal oven with some mods https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMi1P-J-nmY
07:37 AM Tom_L: i did reflow in a normal toaster oven with some mods
07:38 AM rifraf: yep, i was there doing it as well tom, in my humble shed
07:39 AM rifraf: solder is a little different though
07:40 AM Tom_L: it all burns
07:40 AM Tom_L: just a bit hotter
07:41 AM Tom_L: i'd imagine a regular oven gets pretty hot on the 'clean' cycle
07:41 AM rifraf: yep, am excited to see what this new oven can do
07:41 AM rifraf: hard to get any standard oven above 250C though
07:41 AM Tom_L: it will increase your power bill :)
07:41 AM rifraf: have not seen a clean cycle, get i am too cheap
07:42 AM rifraf: well i figure i can only draw 2400w, and thats what the air cons use and they are on all summer here, not me, others
07:43 AM rifraf: but am thinking of using 2 outlet maybe
07:43 AM rifraf: yep will be alot
07:43 AM Tom_L: you might get raided. they may think you're using grow lights :D
07:43 AM rifraf: but with this kiln i can burnout 8 flasks at a time, so much more econanical than 1 tiny kiln thats fits a single flask
07:43 AM rifraf: heh everyone does that
07:44 AM rifraf: but most with led now, much less heat and power,
07:45 AM rifraf: gonna ask my boss for some oven space maybe if i need 3 phase, already have oven on all day at work to do the seats i make
07:46 AM rifraf: heating vinyl to wrap, about 30 minutes of heating a day but they are on for 8 hours
07:47 AM rifraf: and the cnc runs all day and the huge compressor
07:47 AM rifraf: but thats nothing compared to the last place with 6 welders and a plasma going 8 hours a day
07:47 AM rifraf: he had a massive solar setup that supplied all the welders though, like 50kw a day
07:48 AM Tom_L: screw compressor?
07:48 AM Tom_L: or regular
07:49 AM Tom_L: my bud had a screw compressor in a room by itself they're so noisy
07:51 AM rifraf: this compressor in router room, the temp in there gets to like 70C in summer i was told
07:51 AM rifraf: i advised putting in vents to save the router from an early death, in process now, not sure what type of compressor, its a big one with outlets all over factory
07:52 AM rifraf: will take a pic tomorrow, sits on 150 psi all day
07:52 AM Tom_L: yeah it's like 'on demand' air
07:52 AM Tom_L: no tank to speak of
07:53 AM Tom_L: same basic tech as blowers on funnycars etc
07:54 AM rifraf: ah ok, nah this one has a big tank
07:55 AM rifraf: all i know is i am not meant to turn it off it it says 'loading'
07:59 AM rifraf: i love being back on the cnc router, uphostery hard on my arms and fingers though
07:59 AM rifraf: hoping to get a young mule to do the hard parts soon, getting too old
08:02 AM Tom_L: close to rue's age?
08:02 AM rifraf: lol, am much old then him i think
08:03 AM rifraf: lol, look at the way i type
08:03 AM Tom_L: i really had no idea
08:03 AM rifraf: i will be 56 soon
08:03 AM Tom_L: ahh
08:03 AM Tom_L: you're still a pup
08:03 AM rifraf: lol, you are not much older i am sure
08:04 AM Tom_L: tack on another 12
08:04 AM rifraf: doin well then
08:12 AM rifraf: retired?
08:14 AM Tom_L: should be
08:19 AM rue_mohr: rifraf, it wasn't badly modified.
08:19 AM rue_mohr: the blue wire goes to that cap with the blue wire cut off
08:20 AM rue_mohr: the hint for the power is that middle switch on the panel. Whats it do? ;]
08:20 AM rue_mohr: but rifraf there is an important thing missing! it should have two fuses
08:21 AM rue_mohr: the red and yellow wire to the contactor, should have 1A fuses on them!!!!!!
08:21 AM rue_mohr: I dont really understnad why they took it apart
08:22 AM Tom_L: how do i list pp in linux?
08:22 AM Tom_L: cat /dev/??\
08:25 AM Tom_L: to find the 0x378, 0x278 etc..
08:29 AM rifraf: omg the brain cells will need to think
08:29 AM rifraf: ps ?
08:31 AM rifraf: rue will know
08:31 AM Tom_L: i'll figger it out
08:31 AM rifraf: rue a fuse is something i did not see either
08:32 AM rifraf: is weird how i don't see a hole for a power cable yet, need to have a good look around
08:33 AM rifraf: ls /dev/parport*
08:38 AM rue_mohr: Tom_L, ls /dev/lp*
08:41 AM rifraf: rue_mohr not sure why disconnecter either, will find out when i connect it up i guess, maybe just the to the control panel off to test colis
08:42 AM rifraf: omg, i am not making sense anymore, time to sleep
08:42 AM rue_mohr: rifraf, the red and yellow wire go to the -power switch- :]
08:42 AM rifraf: you think?
08:42 AM rue_mohr: if you have them reversed, it wont be abel to close the contactor, but nothing bad will happen
08:42 AM rue_mohr: but please add some fuses!
08:43 AM rifraf: is confusing, 4 devices that all seem to switch power on and of, contactor, timer, PID controller and simmerstat
08:43 AM rue_mohr: heh, I guess there was no operators manual either
08:44 AM rifraf: nope but have all the individual datasheet, need to listen to some more videos while i sleep
08:45 AM rifraf: looks like a custom made kiln, but he had several units the same, from a clearance auction, the coils are perfect though he said, barely any use, and can replace any part as required
08:46 AM rifraf: best part about this is when it works i will understand the operation and be able to fix as required for the future
08:47 AM rifraf: or upgrade with more modern controller, but i am happy to adjust the heat manually for now, at least can set timer to get it up to a temp before i wake up
08:48 AM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/docs/currentSources.pdf
08:48 AM rifraf: the dude was electrician as well, said he could wire it up excatly how i needed it, but was then double the price
08:48 AM rue_mohr: I got a multifunction thats able to scan to pdf for me, with sheet feeder
08:48 AM rue_mohr: I can scan my electronics books in a reasonable time now
08:48 AM rifraf: yes i saw, slowly but surely you will get your docs scanned :)
08:49 AM rue_mohr: huh, it only needs 5 connections, he was gonna charge you what for that?
08:49 AM rifraf: you know phones can take a photo and convert to pdf these days :)
08:49 AM rifraf: i dunno, he was selling them for $1000
08:49 AM rue_mohr: hundreds of pages
08:50 AM rifraf: but he said $500 in conversation for one he had not got to yet, so i said i want that one :(
08:50 AM rifraf: :)
08:51 AM rue_mohr: so, start by reconnecting the blue wire
08:51 AM rue_mohr: get some fuse holders, put them on the red and yellow wires
08:51 AM rifraf: $500 seems like nothing from the research i have done, crappy ones on marketplace for over $1000 that have all sorts of issues
08:51 AM rifraf: ok will do blue wire before work
08:51 AM rue_mohr: after work I can tell you for sure if you want, but the red and yellow wires go to the power switch spades
08:52 AM rifraf: i can burnout 8 flasks in a burning in this thing, 400x400x400
08:52 AM rifraf: ok, so it won't short everything out, i will try that as well
08:52 AM rue_mohr: the incomming power goes to the L connectors on the power contactor
08:52 AM rifraf: really? i am not so sure
08:53 AM rue_mohr: yes they do
08:53 AM aandrew: I picked up a junked kiln from the side of the road like 10 years ago. I only really wanted it for the shell and the firebrick, the coils and controls were shot which was why it was thrown out
08:53 AM rue_mohr: I can make you a schematic if you want
08:53 AM rifraf: the contactor switches with A1 A2
08:53 AM rifraf: thats seems to go to the PID controller
08:53 AM rue_mohr: those are the COIL contactrs
08:54 AM rifraf: ok yep
08:54 AM rue_mohr: the power goes in on L1 and L4 I think, I said it before and I cant find the image
08:55 AM rifraf: https://desire3d.com/images/public/kiln/contactor.jpg
08:55 AM rifraf: L! / L2 are bridged, and L# and 13
08:55 AM rifraf: L3*
08:55 AM rue_mohr: L1,L3 are power in
08:56 AM rue_mohr: the L stands for "Line" so its even wired right
08:56 AM rifraf: but that would then energise the elements directly
08:56 AM rifraf: when switched, i guess that makes some sense
08:56 AM rue_mohr: no its a contactor
08:56 AM rue_mohr: when its CLOSED L1->T1, L2->T2, etc
08:57 AM rifraf: ah ok, and the thinner red and yellow wires supply the PID controller
08:57 AM rue_mohr: yes, AND SHOULD HAVE FUSES
08:57 AM rifraf: ok
08:57 AM rue_mohr: its a thing that drives me crazy, low current control systems should have fuses
08:58 AM rifraf: still no idea why no sign of a power in being connected there
08:58 AM rue_mohr: I'v seen things blow up cause they didn't put freaking fuses on the control circuit
08:58 AM rue_mohr: cause they were taken out from under the lug
08:58 AM BloodMoon: Sounds like the tail end of something funny
08:58 AM rifraf: ok, so the blue wire drives the contactor switching
08:58 AM BloodMoon: current sources?
08:58 AM rue_mohr: hi moon
08:58 AM BloodMoon: hi
08:58 AM rue_mohr: yes, a chapter in my book
08:59 AM BloodMoon: POP!
08:59 AM BloodMoon: ch3....
08:59 AM BloodMoon: unknown elf?
08:59 AM BloodMoon: gcc
08:59 AM Tom_L: nothing like the smell of burnt flesh in the morning...
08:59 AM rifraf: tempted to try now
08:59 AM BloodMoon: gcc-riscv64-unknown-elf
08:59 AM rifraf: but its midnight and 1/2 of my tequila bottle is missing
09:00 AM BloodMoon: XD
09:00 AM Tom_L: hole in the bottom?
09:00 AM rifraf: tom must be
09:00 AM BloodMoon: off to work, PEACE.
09:00 AM rifraf: but there is an open hole on the top as well, maybe i bumped it
09:01 AM rue_mohr: BloodMoon, did you get the document?
09:02 AM rue_mohr: not the pdf, the thing I emailed you
09:02 AM rifraf: this little shot glass seems to be full every time i look at it, am sure i emptied it more than once
09:03 AM rifraf: night folks, enjoy the day
09:05 AM rifraf: found a source to make 10 vacuum cating flasks, old mate from my last job, he can weld em up to once i drill the holes
09:06 AM rifraf: and then i can machine flat afer the welding
09:06 AM rifraf: or even better after i temper them in the kiln
09:08 AM rifraf: gonna DIY the vacuum casting chamber, just need a bigger pipe and some laser cut plate
09:08 AM rue_mohr: aandrew, omg, that json library is brutal, it CANT be THIS complicated
09:08 AM rifraf: will pay visit to me old boss, he is a jerk but we departed on ok terms
09:09 AM rifraf: didn't burn the bridge thankfully
09:11 AM rue_mohr: off to work, bye!
10:58 AM aandrew: rue_mohr: what're you talking about, it's really straightforward and *can* handle complex nesting if needed but generally speaking it's not
11:36 AM aandrew: rue_mohr: https://github.com/akohlsmith/lasertape
11:36 AM aandrew: documented enough? :-)
01:13 PM aandrew: holy shit
01:13 PM aandrew: I just figured out the checksum algorithm and it's unbelievably fucking retarded
01:14 PM aandrew: you pair up the individual digits to form values between 0 and 99, sum the pairs as decimal numbers and %100
01:14 PM aandrew: 000221 23 00 + 02 + 21 = 23
01:14 PM aandrew: 000233 35 00 + 02 + 33 = 35
01:14 PM aandrew: 00032637 66 00 + 03 + 26 + 37 = 66
01:14 PM aandrew: 00032601 30 00 + 03 + 26 + 01 = 30
01:14 PM aandrew: 00062100000086 13 00 + 06 + 21 + 00 + 00 + 00 + 86 = 113 (% 100 = 13)
01:14 PM aandrew: 00062100000087 14 00 + 06 + 21 + 00 + 00 + 00 + 87 = 114 (% 100 = 14)
01:14 PM aandrew: 00062100000088 15 00 + 06 + 21 + 00 + 00 + 00 + 88 = 115 (% 100 = 15)
01:14 PM aandrew: may as well have no checksum whatsoever
02:26 PM BloodMoon: I thought that would just be a standard checksum that rolls over at 100 instead of 255?
02:27 PM BloodMoon: what other ways are there?
02:28 PM BloodMoon: I suppose just pick your poison hay? maybe some other formula to be crafty.
02:29 PM BloodMoon: rue_mohr: yes.
03:11 PM aandrew: there's no fucking point to implementing this kind of checksum. It detects only a small subset of issues. May as well have no checksum whatsoever
03:12 PM aandrew: 000221 has the same checksum as 020021 or even 000320 - there's no positional protection at all, and only minimal protection from bit flips
03:13 PM aandrew: this is hte kind of thing someone who's never debugged a serial comm issue would use, and usually argue loudly about how it's sufficient
04:31 PM rifraf: BANG! ZZZT!
04:32 PM rifraf: just kidding, controller on, temp reading 15C which it is currently, one red light and 200 on controller, must be preset value, only thing not connected is door switch
04:33 PM rifraf: time to study PID manual, should able to tell me thermocouple type which will give me an idea of temp range expected
04:36 PM rifraf: https://desire3d.com/images/public/kiln/XMT-9000.pdf
04:56 PM aandrew: aliexpress ordered on June 9, it's in my hands in Canada on the 17th. not bad
04:59 PM rifraf: aandrew they are very fast at times, was it cheap postage?
05:01 PM rifraf: for larger items with DHL postage i get them in under a week, generally orders 2 to 3 weeks
05:03 PM aandrew: it was free
05:03 PM rifraf: get oven temp reading 120C with heatgun, am sure it should have been hotter with the gun on the thermocouple
05:03 PM rifraf: nice
05:03 PM rifraf: but darn work time again
05:04 PM aandrew: er wait, I got only one of the three modules. It did say shipping in two packages. odd
05:04 PM aandrew: heh
05:05 PM aandrew: one of the packages went canada post and the other some new courier I'd never heard of
05:05 PM aandrew: (Dragonfly)
05:06 PM aandrew: the other item is still in transit
05:06 PM aandrew: I'll have to check the mail, the other half of this shipment might be there
06:07 PM rue_mohr: dragonfly is the canada delivery company china created for local deliveries
06:07 PM rue_mohr: they deliver up here, just rando joe blow driving around dropping off packages
06:08 PM rue_mohr: rifraf, FUSES PLEASE FUSES
07:02 PM aandrew: ah I see
07:02 PM aandrew: and yes 100% agree with rue_mohr: fuses FUSES **FUSES**
08:06 PM Tom_L: Tom_rpi5, test
08:15 PM rue_mohr: test
08:26 PM Tom_L: can't get spi working on it yet
08:47 PM aandrew: there's usually a device tree overlay you have to use which enables (one of) the chip select(s)
08:53 PM Tom_L: where do i get that?
08:54 PM Tom_L: it's got 3 spi ports i think
08:54 PM Tom_L: i'm trying to use /spidev0.0
08:54 PM Tom_L: i think that's what it's called
09:12 PM aandrew: oh um... it's usually right there in /boot/config.txt
09:13 PM aandrew: something like dtoverlay=spi0-1cs,cs0_pin=21
09:13 PM aandrew: that's what I've got on my rpi4 to enable spi0 cs0 and put it on pin 21
