01:31 AM rue_mohr: hi rif
01:46 AM rue_mohr: to yea, our dollar tanked
01:46 AM rifraf: evening rue
01:46 AM rue_mohr: it is
01:46 AM rue_mohr: I designed a new pcb
01:46 AM rifraf: cool, wats it do
01:57 AM rue_mohr: its a serial 7 segment
01:58 AM rue_mohr: you just hook it up to 9600 baud serial
02:27 AM rifraf: if you need it good i guess
02:27 AM rifraf: a serial port for a 7seg led seems alot
02:42 AM rue_mohr: but you can chain them
02:42 AM rue_mohr: less pins than i2c
03:19 AM rifraf: thats something i guess, so you can have a row of them, what are you using it for
03:31 AM polprog: https://stooq.pl/c/?s=cadeur&c=3d&t=l&a=lg&r=cadusd
03:32 AM polprog: i think this link automatically updates
03:32 AM polprog: the previous one had 4th mar in the url
03:32 AM rue_mohr: it looks like anytime I want to so anything I need to buy a new computer, install the latest OS and get it done before its all obsolete
03:33 AM polprog: what do you mean?
03:33 AM rue_mohr: rifraf, its just for fun
03:33 AM rue_mohr: polprog, 80% thru my order of this board, it hung cause I dont have 3d thats new enough in my browser
03:33 AM polprog: :/
03:33 AM rue_mohr: it was SO much work to get this far
03:34 AM rue_mohr: I'm going to give up and go to bed sad
03:35 AM polprog: Aisler or JLC?
03:35 AM rue_mohr: jlc
03:35 AM polprog: firefox?
03:36 AM rue_mohr: no "chromium" the bastard child of chrome, adjusted to adhere to the debian "dont fuck the users" policies
03:36 AM polprog: woah
03:36 AM polprog: doesnt work on chromium?
03:36 AM polprog: thats something new
03:36 AM rue_mohr: its an older version
03:37 AM polprog: Version 131.0.6778.204 (Official Build) built on Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) (64-bit)
03:37 AM rue_mohr: again I'm locked because the world forgot what wysiwyg html editing is
03:37 AM polprog: this is what I have
03:37 AM polprog: it worked in JLC so far..
03:40 AM rue_mohr: there are no more wysiwyg html editors anymore, I have kompozer installed and everything I would need to install to update anything conflicts with it
03:40 AM rue_mohr: its a reason I want to blow up the world
03:41 AM rue_mohr: people say they use wysiwyg html editors, where you edit html in one window, then re-render it in another, obviously not wysiwyg
03:47 AM rifraf: yep is not as easy to make a website as it used to be, even though its easier now
03:47 AM rifraf: we need to adapt, i been trying as well
03:48 AM rifraf: good old wysiwyg
03:48 AM rifraf: ms frontpage
03:49 AM rue_mohr: just kompozer, done
03:49 AM rue_mohr: templates, sites, whatever, done
03:49 AM rifraf: you watchin runp rue?
03:49 AM rue_mohr: select the text, upside it will its right, change colour till its right
03:49 AM rue_mohr: I just went thru hell to try to do pcba on the pcb and now its 1:30am and I'm giving up and going to bed
03:49 AM rifraf: yep i remember, but nothing i knew means anything now
03:50 AM rifraf: cept an ftp connection
03:51 AM rifraf: hope the week off is successful, see ya later
10:35 AM aandrew: rue_mohr: where are you seeing CAD tanking? I get CAD-USD rate changes every day and it's been hovering around 1.44 (today is 1.43) for quite a while. It last changed semi-dramatically in January
11:02 AM VanUnamed_ is now known as VanUnamed
12:08 PM rue_mohr: their both tanking, they are tied
12:15 PM aandrew: gotcha
12:33 PM rue_mohr: "these taffifs are not even happening rue" Lots of people are playing the "none of this is happening" card, its kinda stressful....
12:35 PM aandrew: yeah. I am betting people a donut that they'll be reversed before the end of the week (Sunday 23:59:59) but in such a way as to look like Canada capitulated
12:36 PM aandrew: personally I want them to stay in effect for a month. this "on/off/on/off/on/off" bullshit is just pretty obvious stock market manipulation
12:38 PM aandrew: I also think in the long run it's going to help Canada. We spend way too much time fighting amongst ourselves and letting the US do the hard work. Build both the pipelines (east and west) in Canada, restore and even grow our military funding, and really work on trade relationships with the rest of the world
12:38 PM aandrew: America is very very convenient to trade with but they're hardly the only game in town.
12:39 PM aandrew: not sure if I mentioned it here or not. my personal "red lines" are if the US actually leaves NATO (not just Trump talking about it) or they make a real move on Canada. Economic warfare is real, but not enough
12:41 PM aandrew: I believe Americans will "wake up" before it's too late. I have faith but either of those two lines are where my ability to keep the faith would be exceeded.
01:00 PM rue_mohr: well, it always has helped canada, we take our goods elsewheer
01:00 PM rue_mohr: everyone is moving their red lines, its really quite enabling
01:01 PM rue_mohr: I dont think anyone will wake up, every mechanism ever has failed at this point
01:01 PM rue_mohr: I dont even have any confidence he will get shot before he dies of old age as dictator of the usa
01:04 PM rue_mohr: https://stooq.pl/c/?s=cadeur&c=3d&t=l&a=lg&r=cadusd
01:04 PM rue_mohr: think I should have moved more than $20k into an eur account...
01:06 PM rue_mohr: they charge 4% to move the money in and out
01:07 PM rue_mohr: so there has to be an 8% diff before I'v done any successfully bailing
01:08 PM aandrew: I don't want him to get shot. You don't want to make a martyr out of him, and besides Vance wouldn't be any better for either country
01:08 PM rue_mohr: I wanted to see him shot back in like 2000
01:09 PM rue_mohr: he's one of those jerks you run into in highschool and avoid, but he ends up making your life hell anyhow
01:10 PM rue_mohr: ugh
01:10 PM rue_mohr: ------anyhow--------
01:10 PM rue_mohr: someone pointed out my 7 segment module should have the same pin arrangement as a WS8216 and it was a rather easy change
01:11 PM aandrew: that's a really interesting graph
01:11 PM rue_mohr: I'll regnerate everything AGAIN and try the jlc thing
01:11 PM aandrew: and yes it looks like both CAD and USD have fallen at roughly the same rate where EUR has stayed steady for the most part
01:11 PM rue_mohr: yea, the usd is tanking and the cad is tied to it
01:11 PM aandrew: that looks a lot like it was generated by MRTG
01:12 PM rue_mohr: oh yea, thats what rang a bell
01:12 PM rue_mohr: I think there is a command line graphing tool that does those
01:13 PM rue_mohr: ok, I will push-off the jlc pcb thing, cause it really burned me last night
01:13 PM rue_mohr: I wrote some code for the 8051 to run an hd44780 lcd I want to test
01:13 PM rue_mohr: I have another project going for a serial lcd
01:13 PM rue_mohr: which is SUPER handy when your debugging a microcontroller
01:14 PM aandrew: nice. I've been procrastinating/stalling on my projects for days now. It's bad
01:15 PM rue_mohr: I have the week off work
01:15 PM rue_mohr: wed today, not too bad
01:16 PM aandrew: nice, I could use a week off work
01:19 PM rue_mohr: O
01:19 PM rue_mohr: I'm trying to burn off a crazy number of banked hours I gathered up
01:20 PM rue_mohr: so, on this 7 segment module
01:20 PM rue_mohr: I only used 1 resistor on the common of the display
01:20 PM rue_mohr: which *normally* means each digit will have a different brightness
01:20 PM rue_mohr: *but* I wired the common to a pwm pin
01:21 PM rue_mohr: with the intention of using the count of segments on to balance the brightness
01:21 PM rue_mohr: but there is another way to do it wall,
01:21 PM rue_mohr: I can strobe thru the segments
01:22 PM rue_mohr: and always give each segment a 1/8 duty
01:22 PM rue_mohr: the IO is "limited" to 8ma, which I'v set the resistor to
01:23 PM rue_mohr: I think both methods would be the same, but am curious if one method would be brighter than the other
01:23 PM rue_mohr: well great wall of silence? what do you think?
01:24 PM rue_mohr: oh, the *other* thing about putting the common on an IO pin is that I can use common anode OR common cathode displays
01:25 PM aandrew: ok, that is a slick idea
01:25 PM rue_mohr: ah :]
01:25 PM aandrew: (adjust PWM to maintain brightness)
01:25 PM rue_mohr: and get this
01:25 PM aandrew: yeah there are some really slick ideas in this tiny circuit board
01:25 PM rue_mohr: I THINK, the common is also an ADC pin, which means I *might* be able to tell if the display is common anode or cathode on a startup test
01:27 PM rue_mohr: pin 17...
01:27 PM rue_mohr: yea, its an ADC channel
01:31 PM rue_mohr: haha its designed for the old 7 segment and now everyone uses the breadboard friendly ones...
01:31 PM rue_mohr: dig dig
01:33 PM aandrew: ugh gotta reboot. I *hate* rebooting
01:33 PM rue_mohr: FS check!!!
01:33 PM rue_mohr: (1 horus later)
01:35 PM aandrew: thankfully not. haven't had to do that in *years*
01:36 PM aandrew: why are you still using a non-journalled filesystem?
01:36 PM rue_mohr: it is, it makes me do it anyhow :/
01:37 PM rue_mohr: what is the point of search engines that take all the words you give it, and combine the searches for each individual word?
01:40 PM rue_mohr: I dont even think the world knows what a man47 display is...
01:42 PM rue_mohr: I'm not gonna say the new pinout isn't better, but AAAARRRRRRGGGGG, this will be like the 5th major board redesign
01:44 PM rue_mohr: gone
01:44 PM rue_mohr: no trace
01:46 PM rue_mohr: a single 5x7 dot matrix for only $4.20
01:48 PM aandrew: I never figured you for a stoner
01:48 PM rue_mohr: well, I best count my displays, check the pinouts and figure out what I want to do
01:49 PM rue_mohr: man47 is completely forgotten
01:49 PM rue_mohr: there are just NONE on ali
01:49 PM aandrew: I don't know what a man47 is
01:49 PM aandrew: is that one of those oldschool 5x7 displays that people have been recreating?
01:49 PM rue_mohr: what
01:49 PM rue_mohr: no
01:49 PM rue_mohr: its an old school 7 segment
01:49 PM rue_mohr: with th DIP14 pin arrangement
01:50 PM aandrew: oh I think I've probably used them before
01:50 PM aandrew: sounds kind of familiar anyway
01:50 PM rue_mohr: 7 pins on each side, usually a bunch in the middle missing
01:50 PM rue_mohr: horrid to try to make an array of
01:50 PM rue_mohr: always sit sideways in a breadboard
01:51 PM aandrew: yeah that "always sit sideways in a breadboard" elicits an emotional response from me, hah
01:52 PM aandrew: mind you I haven't used a breadboad in any meaningful capacity in years now
01:52 PM aandrew: when I moved here I bought a few from microcenter and they are *shit*
01:52 PM aandrew: the little fingers that are supposed to grab the pins are just too wide so all the connections are iffy
01:53 PM aandrew: if I was just starting out in electronics this would have driven me to murder
01:54 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/MAN4710A_MAN4740A.jpg
02:02 PM aandrew: yep I know that one
02:02 PM aandrew: as soon as you said 14 pin and shitty to use in a breadboard I knew
02:08 PM rue_mohr: 0 on ali
03:49 PM rue_shop2: rue_mohr, dual socket
03:49 PM rue_shop2: DIP16
05:51 PM rue_mohr: wow, dollar losing 1%/day...
06:31 PM rue_mohr: ooooh
06:32 PM rue_mohr: I didn't write the 8051 serial library so I'd have to completely refactor it
06:32 PM rue_mohr: but here I am
06:32 PM rue_mohr: its a good start I suppose
07:30 PM rue_shop2: I need to write a script that goes thru a list of machines on the network and NTP syncs them all
07:31 PM aandrew: ... just run ntpd on them?
07:32 PM rue_mohr: yea, log into all 11 and run ntp by hand
07:32 PM rue_mohr: or write a script
07:32 PM rue_mohr: 11?
07:32 PM rue_mohr: ok
07:32 PM rue_mohr: ----
07:32 PM rue_mohr: jukebox
07:33 PM rue_mohr: shop fileserver
07:33 PM rue_mohr: shop workstation 1
07:33 PM rue_mohr: shop workstation 2
07:33 PM rue_mohr: shop workstation 3
07:33 PM rue_mohr: bed laptop
07:33 PM rue_mohr: house workstation
07:33 PM rue_mohr: phone system
07:33 PM rue_mohr: home automation computer
07:34 PM rue_mohr: 3d printer rack station
07:34 PM rue_mohr: livingroom 3d printer station
07:34 PM rue_mohr: router
07:34 PM rue_mohr: oh, so there are 12 now, ok
07:35 PM rue_mohr: funny I still need a furnace
07:39 PM rue_mohr: cool, the 8051 library is comming along, I'm missing 7seg, hobbyservo, and keyboard
07:40 PM rue_mohr: most of the rest was gathered doing stuff today
07:40 PM rue_mohr: (lcd, serial, delay
07:40 PM rue_mohr: ...)
08:00 PM rue_mohr: polprog, can you play yet?
08:20 PM rue_shop2: I been waiting like 5 years now
08:38 PM rue_mohr: maybe enough time has gone by for me to search around locally again
08:38 PM rue_mohr: I need to think up some bait
08:39 PM rue_mohr: but how do I filter out people I already know
09:22 PM rue_mohr: https://stooq.pl/c/?s=cadeur&c=3d&t=l&a=lg&r=cadusd
09:22 PM rue_mohr: this is interesting
09:23 PM rue_mohr: ...and it hasn't even started
10:56 PM VanUnamed: rue_mohr: why when i have my earphone plugged in the laptop
10:56 PM VanUnamed: andnothing is playing
10:56 PM VanUnamed: it goes like
10:56 PM VanUnamed: toc, toc, toc, on the speakers
10:59 PM rue_shop2: power supply variations from the (mechanical hard drive?) or just DMA stuffs leaking thru to the audio amps
11:15 PM VanUnamed: what is a dma stuff
11:26 PM rue_mohr: heh
11:26 PM rue_mohr: your computer transferring bursts of information between systems in your computer
11:28 PM aandrew: I've been doing this almost 40 years and I still think DMA is magical
11:38 PM rue_mohr: as a kid I wanted to know how to get it to clear the PC graphics buffer for me
11:39 PM VanUnamed: and now its not making it anymore
11:39 PM VanUnamed: weird
11:41 PM rue_mohr: *sigh* twitter locked me out
11:41 PM rue_mohr: I think it was something about posting hex numbers
11:42 PM VanUnamed: yoi cannot hex ppl
11:42 PM VanUnamed: didnt they teach you that at hogwarts?
11:42 PM rue_mohr: :]
11:45 PM rue_mohr: since I was a kid I been trying to make a wireless remote for a robot
11:45 PM rue_mohr: with all the toys available today, its getting stupid
11:58 PM rifraf: yay got early mark and a day off work :0
11:58 PM rue_mohr: mmm
11:58 PM rue_mohr: made some ok progress on 8051 libraries
11:59 PM rue_mohr: jaw for a robot head is comming along ok
