12:25 AM rifraf: yay found the boring bar, good being semi organised
01:01 AM rifraf: bit milder 32°C here but still hot
01:04 AM rue_mohr: my furnace is fighting to keep my house at 15c
01:04 AM rue_mohr: and its only -2c outside
01:04 AM rue_mohr: "Come, step into my fridge"
01:05 AM rifraf: house and shed have separate heating?
01:06 AM rue_mohr: yes
01:06 AM rue_mohr: the shop is heated by a 60w incadescent lamp on the table
01:06 AM rue_mohr: mostly
01:06 AM rifraf: is your house a shed too or you keep it like a pristine homestead?
01:06 AM rifraf: lol
01:07 AM rue_mohr: I dont do physical work in the house
01:07 AM rue_mohr: programming, modeling and 3d printing
01:07 AM rifraf: thought so, ah ok
01:07 AM rifraf: so no lathe in loungeroom?
01:07 AM rue_mohr: no
01:07 AM rifraf: next to a 6 foot fishtank
01:07 AM rue_mohr: but I want to build a new house
01:08 AM rue_mohr: partly so I can afford to heat it to 19c
01:08 AM rifraf: must be awesome to live somewhere affordable
01:08 AM rue_mohr: its "not"
01:08 AM rue_mohr: wont say it isn't closer
01:09 AM rue_mohr: saving like all hell to build a new house, 2400 square feet with 300 square foot living space and the rest shop
01:09 AM rifraf: you need well over a million dollars to look at a house around here now
01:09 AM rue_mohr: I'm getting old fast tho damnit
01:09 AM rifraf: how old?
01:09 AM rue_mohr: here too
01:09 AM rue_mohr: about 20 years older since I been over
01:09 AM rue_mohr: er, 26 years since
01:10 AM rifraf: not sure if you are older or younger than me
01:10 AM rifraf: i am old, ish, need to go fishin this week i think
01:10 AM rue_mohr: I worked for an electrical company for 15 years
01:10 AM rifraf: \yep, stable employee, unlike myself
01:11 AM rifraf: did you see what happened to me today
01:11 AM rue_mohr: ? no
01:11 AM rifraf: i went to work to quit
01:11 AM rifraf: but got laid off instead
01:11 AM rue_mohr: uh
01:11 AM rue_mohr: before you could say anything?
01:11 AM rifraf: suited me fine, cause can get benifits if i need em, and have a paid week to play
01:12 AM rue_mohr: or they did it as a layoff so you can get benifits
01:12 AM rifraf: yep, i had letter in my pocket, but he said his letter was backdated to when i was away sick last week
01:12 AM rifraf: no he did not know my plans, in this case i won
01:12 AM rue_mohr: oh
01:13 AM rifraf: yep, odd situation, but soo happy i do not have to be there
01:13 AM rifraf: has not been easy few months
01:13 AM rue_mohr: at the electrical company the managment changed
01:14 AM rifraf: lost your support?
01:14 AM rue_mohr: and they were turning away my long term customers and sending me home with no work
01:14 AM rue_mohr: I was losing 20% of my hours
01:14 AM rifraf: yeah sucks when you have ends to meet
01:14 AM rifraf: \we need to make our own multinational business rue
01:14 AM rue_mohr: then they started messing with customer safety, they did not want to check fire extinguishers before selling them to customers
01:15 AM rifraf: nearly have a machine that should be able to make moneyu
01:15 AM rue_mohr: at the same time, the book keeper had not being paying me for incodental parts (1-2 dollar stuff) I was claiming, turned out hadn't been doing it for YEARS
01:15 AM rue_mohr: I was 'giving' them ~$100/yr in random parts to get customers going again
01:16 AM rue_mohr: and the lastest helper was working against me
01:16 AM rue_mohr: any war was lost, I said I was out
01:16 AM rifraf: hospital a better place?
01:16 AM rue_mohr: YEA
01:17 AM rue_mohr: lower pay, on paper
01:17 AM rue_mohr: but lots of overtime so pays more
01:17 AM rue_mohr: AND
01:17 AM rue_mohr: every so often their throwing out something like a stainless steel sink, or a less than one year old dishwasher, or a minifirdge
01:17 AM rue_mohr: or a vfd, or a oxygen concentrator, or
01:17 AM rifraf: yep kinda the same for for, i was made to feel most unwelcome, but stuck it out, think new job will be much better
01:18 AM rue_mohr: the house is packed with the coolest stuff :/
01:18 AM rifraf: less money, better work conditions
01:18 AM rue_mohr: medical stuff is crazy
01:18 AM rifraf: ok, might have to pospone barfeeder till around midnight
01:19 AM rue_mohr: you know those cheap little pushbuttons in like vcr's and stuff?
01:19 AM rifraf: tequila been sitting too close
01:19 AM rifraf: yep
01:19 AM rue_mohr: well the medical ones are crazy, way more solid and like gold plated
01:19 AM rue_mohr: and all the medical stuff parts are like that
01:19 AM rue_mohr: not gold plated but crazy overengineering
01:19 AM rifraf: cool, but do you need it
01:20 AM rue_mohr: better than the stuff I have in stock now
01:20 AM rue_mohr: so, I got a bunch of these 8 character led matrix displays
01:20 AM rue_mohr: their really neat, and online their $70ea
01:20 AM rue_mohr: well I have 80 of them
01:20 AM rifraf: nice
01:21 AM rue_mohr: I'm gonna use 40 to make a really cool 'screen'
01:21 AM rifraf: if you have a project to sell them in
01:21 AM rue_mohr: na
01:21 AM rifraf: artworks can sell
01:21 AM rue_mohr: I feel like I shouldn't be turning money on the stuff, I'm getting it free
01:21 AM rue_mohr: oh and art doesn't sell here
01:22 AM rifraf: we have artshows here where they reassemble all sorts of junk and put a $20K price on them
01:22 AM rue_mohr: 1/4 houses is NOT an artist of some sort
01:22 AM rue_mohr: we got art everywhere
01:22 AM rifraf: rue_mohr which boring bar style? https://imgur.com/a/34QiSX3
01:23 AM rifraf: need to test the 4 sided one again, the triangle not doing good long cuts
01:23 AM rue_mohr: 40mm hole? heavy
01:23 AM rue_mohr: yea the 4 sided looks good
01:23 AM rifraf: boring from 32mm to 65mm
01:24 AM rifraf: for roughing
01:24 AM rue_mohr: yea, pull it short
01:24 AM rifraf: yep, it has an extra 2mm on the shaft as well
01:24 AM rue_mohr: I dont really like carbide cause I always screw it up
01:24 AM rifraf: i need that extension, gotta come in 72mm from each end
01:24 AM rue_mohr: I mostly use hss
01:25 AM rifraf: i mainly use carbide inserts now, for repeatability
01:25 AM rue_mohr: I broke my cutoff bit tho and cant find tapered blade at a good cost
01:25 AM rue_mohr: yup, repeatability would be a think
01:25 AM rue_mohr: thing
01:26 AM rifraf: hard to mount this block in 4 jaw with all the spacers
01:26 AM rifraf: was easier  with chuck off, i need to not be lazy
01:27 AM rue_mohr: space it off a plate
01:27 AM rifraf: maybe later, its a sign i am not fit for work
01:27 AM rifraf: i do have the face plate chuck
01:27 AM rue_mohr: I avoid taking the chuck off
01:27 AM rue_mohr: cause of the risk of crunching a finger
01:27 AM rifraf: but then i have to work out all the mounts, i like the 4 jaw
01:28 AM rifraf: \always changing here, so comes off easy
01:28 AM rue_mohr: yea fun puttin the hole where you want it
01:28 AM rue_mohr: so, you get any political news out there from this side?
01:28 AM rifraf: nope
01:28 AM rue_mohr: huh
01:29 AM rifraf: i watch no news cept for some russian news
01:29 AM rue_mohr: oh
01:29 AM rifraf: and canada not exciting enough to make a headline currently
01:29 AM rue_mohr: they mention their war with ukrane?
01:29 AM rifraf: yeah, i been living it for years, my partner was from there
01:29 AM rue_mohr: hmm
01:30 AM rue_mohr: think they lie much about the war status?
01:30 AM rifraf: not really
01:30 AM rifraf: its the usa and eu that lies
01:30 AM rue_mohr: mm
01:30 AM rue_mohr: yea, right now can cant tell whats real and whats not
01:31 AM rifraf: i have been watching this this way before it started, with relatives living in ukraine, we knew what it was really like
01:31 AM rifraf: still have contacts, people that go back and forth, its no good for sure
01:32 AM rue_mohr: I got the impression from one article that the border is really quite fuzzy, that it sort of dithers into being more and more russian as you get to te border
01:33 AM rifraf: my partner and her cousin both lost apartments in mariople
01:33 AM rue_mohr: I dont know the city names or locations
01:34 AM rifraf: yep you need to study a bit to know the geogrphy
01:35 AM rifraf: anyways trump is gonna fix it all in 24hrs, so nuthin to worry about
01:37 AM rifraf: ok gonna try hold in 4 spacers and this hunk of shiny againin 4jaw
02:08 AM rue_mohr: its gonna hit like -4c tonight
02:09 AM rue_mohr: must be a clear sky
02:09 AM rue_mohr: wonder if my taps are gonna be ok
02:09 AM rue_mohr: not a great time to go crawling 'around in the basement
02:30 AM rue_mohr: I have a storage shed with a squirrel vacuum pump in it
02:30 AM rue_mohr: it didn't fail
02:30 AM rue_mohr: regular changeout
02:31 AM rue_mohr: -2.5c
02:31 AM rifraf: 100% improvment with the new boring bar
02:32 AM rifraf: cuts twice as deep and cleaner
02:32 AM rifraf: would not recomment a triangl bit
02:45 AM polprog: morning
02:45 AM polprog: -5 here
02:48 AM rue_mohr: yea, ok
02:49 AM rue_mohr: not complaining now
03:07 AM rifraf: still 2.9kg of block left
03:13 AM rifraf: 1kg of hole over floor
03:15 AM rue_mohr: heh
03:15 AM rue_mohr: I have to go thru the pile on my cnc carefully
03:15 AM rue_mohr: I think I have a lot of cutting bits in it
03:43 AM rifraf: i found a good carbide scribe already while looking for the indicator parts
03:44 AM polprog: rue_mohr: i thought you got used to cold
03:44 AM rifraf: pilot hole done, enough for the day https://imgur.com/a/lDfvvoJ
03:45 AM rue_mohr: hah
03:45 AM polprog: but maybe the ocean evens out the temps a bit
03:45 AM polprog: do you get snow often?
03:49 AM rue_mohr: we epxect to every year
04:55 AM Tom_L: rifraf, i'd suggest the diamond cutter but it seems you figured that out already
11:28 AM vanmarco__ is now known as VanUnamed
01:33 PM rue_mohr: well
01:34 PM rue_mohr: I either want to build a silly robot I dont have space for...
01:34 PM rue_mohr: or I'm not sure
01:34 PM rue_mohr: I should get the slotting happening on the latches
01:34 PM rue_mohr: the old cnc is kinda burried
04:44 PM rue_shop2: ? <Idle,MPos:9.584,7.849,3.000,WPos:9.584,7.849,3.000>
04:44 PM rue_shop2: ok
04:44 PM rue_shop2: G10 L2 x0 y0 ok
04:44 PM rue_shop2: ? <Idle,MPos:9.584,7.849,3.000,WPos:9.584,7.849,3.000>
04:44 PM rue_shop2: it didn't work
04:44 PM rifraf: one side machined, bearing and oil seal seat
04:44 PM rifraf: within 0.01mm of center of stock
04:45 PM rifraf: how do you guys dial in a large square part in the 4 jaw
04:45 PM rue_shop2: takes me hours
04:45 PM rue_shop2: esp when I adjust the wrong way
04:45 PM rifraf: takes me more than a couple of minutes
04:45 PM rifraf: but what i am doing is working, and have not really seen it before
04:46 PM rifraf: i don't have extremly long indicator, so hard to do the flat and rotate part
04:46 PM rue_shop2: well I'm getting a bit more progress on parts for sprayers, but nothing I wanted to do
04:46 PM rue_shop2: yea, I kinda jab it sideways in to the hole
04:47 PM rifraf: cool, this taking me ages as well
04:47 PM rifraf: but no job offers yet :(
04:47 PM rifraf: so keepin busy
04:47 PM rue_shop2: oh I thought you had a great interview?
04:47 PM rifraf: yeah i guess, they were sending contract yesterday, but i guess just busy
04:48 PM rifraf: man this headstock is better than the last one
04:48 PM rifraf: well so far touch wood
04:48 PM Tom_L: does the hole go all the way thru? if so center the hole
04:48 PM rifraf: can't believe i got it centered and trammed right
04:49 PM rifraf: my centre holes are rough, out by 1-2mm
04:50 PM rifraf: Tom_L i am using a digital level on top of block to get repeatable 90° steps, then using indicator on saddle so i can go right back down to the chuck
04:51 PM rifraf: in the center of the flat, keep rotating 180° and adjusting, having to bring out the indicATOR BEFORE TURNING EACH TIME
04:52 PM rifraf: didn't mean caps, once i get 0 an both sides of chuck, then use same setup to tram each side in, tapping the stock to adjust
04:52 PM rifraf: and repeat a few times time i get within 0.01mm each time, then machine
04:53 PM Tom_L: other way maybe not as accurate is mark an X point to point on the end
04:53 PM rifraf: without the digital level would be impossible, 1° out makes big difference
04:53 PM Tom_L: use the tailstock to find the mark
04:53 PM rifraf: yep started that way
04:53 PM rifraf: just to make sure center drill was close to center
04:54 PM rifraf: things move alot though
04:54 PM rifraf: so for roughing out my bad eyes are good enough
04:54 PM rifraf: its the final passes that you have to recheck everything for
04:54 PM rifraf: big block in little lathe
04:55 PM Tom_L: it's not easy
04:55 PM Tom_L: if it were, everybody could do it
04:55 PM rifraf: love taking it to its limits
04:55 PM rifraf: one drive belt snapped, but was on the way out for months
04:56 PM rifraf: made sure to have a few spares on hand
04:59 PM rifraf: we are at 2569 grams,  projected weight 2217, lets see how accurate it is
05:01 PM rue_shop2: on the cnc spindles I use two belts now
05:01 PM rue_shop2: have a chance of finishing a job on one belt
05:02 PM rue_shop2: I have to work out whats taking up on all the space in the shop
05:02 PM rifraf: wat belts rue? i been using HTD 3M in most places
05:02 PM rue_shop2: part of it I know, I have 5 milk crates of stepper motors
05:02 PM rue_shop2: yea, I have belts on my spindles
05:03 PM rifraf: but the lathe used a gates tiny V belt, have always been amazing how long they actually last for such a thin belt
05:05 PM rifraf: this link work better rue? https://i.imgur.com/lB8jhIr.jpeg
05:11 PM rifraf: better than when doing roughing hole https://i.imgur.com/8p7k58z_d.jpeg?maxwidth=520&shape=thumb&fidelity=high\
05:11 PM rifraf: is material left on each face to oil seal seat
05:14 PM Tom_L: another way to center would be to put a flat tool in the tool post and run it up beside the part and use some calipers between it and the part with a machinist square on the saddle & block
05:14 PM Tom_L: that way the tool post tool will remain where it is
05:14 PM Tom_L: as far as x
05:15 PM rifraf: is that to help keep 90 degree increments?
05:16 PM Tom_L: yes
05:16 PM Tom_L: so it's perp to the saddle
05:16 PM Tom_L: or parallel depending how you look at it
05:16 PM rifraf: ok, well the level working really well, gives me 0.01° increments
05:16 PM rifraf: yep
05:17 PM rifraf: i spent time to get the level level with the saddle/headstock
05:17 PM rifraf: again am blown away by the results, i never got within 0.01 on the previous headstock
05:18 PM rifraf: aim is to get back bearing seat and front bearing seat as inline as possible
05:19 PM rifraf: always adjusting the entire headstock on this machine every time its moved on my bed cause is not leveled yet, but having that inline means minimal vibration and smooth sailing
06:31 PM rue_mohr: :]
06:31 PM rue_mohr: I dug out my old cnc and got it going
06:31 PM rue_mohr: only one axis was frozen :]
09:48 PM rue_mohr: https://wiki.dfrobot.com/SKU_SEN0539-EN_Gravity_Voice_Recognition_Module_I2C_UART
09:48 PM rue_mohr: strange phrase selection
09:48 PM rue_mohr: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005493207168.html
09:48 PM rue_mohr: about $40
09:53 PM rue_mohr: intersting
09:54 PM rue_mohr: there are a number of voice recognition modules out now
09:54 PM rue_mohr: hmm, all rather cheap
