01:07 PM rue_mohr: - fertilizer for raspberries! (still need to put it on)
01:20 PM rue_mohr: - strip down printers
01:20 PM rue_mohr: - assemble Y axis for cnc
02:20 PM rue_mohr: ok raspberries are good
02:20 PM rue_mohr: So the Y axis on the cnc isn't completely mounted yet
02:21 PM rue_mohr: The idea is that it kinda floats on its uprights so it can be adjusted
02:21 PM rue_mohr: and I just have it vise-gripped togethor in the approximate location
02:22 PM Tom_L: better get out the superglue
02:22 PM rue_mohr: the idea is to use hold-down clamps
02:22 PM rue_mohr: built in
02:23 PM Tom_L: what things are you going to cnc with this big cnc?
02:23 PM Tom_L: kid is getting 3 new cnc's at work
02:23 PM Tom_L: haas
02:24 PM Tom_L: but not for a couple months
02:24 PM Tom_L: one is a prototype
02:24 PM rue_mohr: ooo coool
02:24 PM rue_mohr: does a prototype means random "Hey, we made this new thing and here it is to try out!"
02:24 PM Tom_L: he's not that excited cause they're taking up his 'material' floor space
02:25 PM Tom_L: when they have another whole building they could be putting them in that is hvac'd but not used
02:25 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1310411.jpg
02:26 PM rue_mohr: the tabs forward are the tie points for the Y axis
02:26 PM rue_mohr: the horizontal bit their clamped to is the upright off the bed
02:26 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1310412.jpg
02:26 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1310413.jpg
02:26 PM rue_mohr: zoom outs for context
02:27 PM Tom_L: all i see it trees
02:27 PM Tom_L: :)
02:27 PM rue_mohr: so I need to make clampdowns for those tabs
02:28 PM rue_mohr: there is a top and bottom set
02:28 PM Tom_L: you are soon gonna run out of places to walk
02:29 PM rue_mohr: already there
02:29 PM rue_mohr: thats why stripdown pritners is on my list
02:29 PM rue_mohr: so, maybe before I work on the belt drive for Y, I should get the Y axis clamped down
02:29 PM Tom_L: are those tubes parallel within a mm?
02:30 PM rue_mohr: I dont remember what it came out to
02:30 PM rue_mohr: but they dont ahve to be parallel
02:30 PM rue_mohr: one of them is a ref, the other is a guide
02:30 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/tempimage/p1310412.jpg
02:31 PM Tom_L: gonna use wire channels for the wires?
02:31 PM rue_mohr: there is a 6 point grab on the "lower" one, the top is just a 2 bearing holder
02:31 PM Tom_L: gonna be some long noisy wires
02:31 PM rue_mohr: yea, I'm not sure yet
02:32 PM Tom_L: that stuff i used worked out good
02:32 PM rue_mohr: I saw a thing a few weeks ago where a bunch of cables broke in a cable chain
02:32 PM Tom_L: they shouldn't
02:33 PM rue_mohr: yea, I think they were bunching and compressing
02:33 PM Tom_L: unless they used the wrong kind of wire
02:33 PM Tom_L: sounds like the chain was too small
02:33 PM rue_mohr: the motors will be PWM DC too
02:33 PM rue_mohr: so that thing will be super electrical noisy
02:34 PM Tom_L: use shielded wire
02:34 PM Tom_L: and ground the frames
02:34 PM rue_mohr: yes, good points
02:34 PM Tom_L: i had to even on my sherline
02:34 PM Tom_L: star ground everything
02:34 PM rue_mohr: 170V PWM :]
02:34 PM Tom_L: that'll go good in a rain storm
02:35 PM rue_mohr: its under good cover
02:35 PM rue_mohr: only snow gets in with wind
02:35 PM Tom_L: you probably don't get alot of humidity up there or do you being near the coast?
02:35 PM rue_mohr: yes
02:36 PM Tom_L: salty air
02:36 PM rue_mohr: more than some places
02:36 PM rue_mohr: so, shall I just use some really thick steel strips for the clamps?
02:36 PM Tom_L: the coolant affects the paint i used
02:37 PM rue_mohr: drill the upright and bolt them thru
02:37 PM Tom_L: but i wasn't gonna spend a bazillion on paint
02:37 PM rue_mohr: I think if I have about 1/2" of adjustment on these, I'm good
02:38 PM rue_mohr: ok
02:38 PM Tom_L: just so things don't vibrate loose
02:38 PM rue_mohr: - clamp Y axis
02:39 PM Tom_L: and if they can, they will
02:39 PM rue_mohr: - find motor for Y axis
02:39 PM rue_mohr: - mount Y axis gear box
02:39 PM rue_mohr: - mount Y axis idler
02:39 PM rue_mohr: - install belt clamp for Y axis
02:40 PM Tom_L: install belt covers for OSHA
02:40 PM rue_mohr: - heh
02:40 PM rue_mohr: that ones the Z axis
02:40 PM rue_mohr: I'm looking forward to making up a cover for that
02:40 PM rue_mohr: using the new tricks
02:41 PM Tom_L: i did one in cad and it came out as planned
02:41 PM rue_mohr: - make 4 Y axis holdowns
02:41 PM rue_mohr: 3/8"?
02:41 PM rue_mohr: larger than 1/4"
02:41 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Belt_Guard/Belt_Guard.jpg
02:41 PM rue_mohr: 5/16?"
02:42 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Belt_Guard/Belt_Guard1.jpg
02:42 PM Tom_L: for what?
02:42 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Belt_Guard/Belt_Guard3.jpg
02:42 PM rue_mohr: the bolts taht hold the clamps for the Y axis - Y axis to the uprights
02:43 PM Tom_L: 5/16 is a good compromise
02:43 PM Tom_L: 6mm
02:43 PM Tom_L: whatever
02:43 PM rue_mohr: its equiv to a pretty major holddown clamp
02:43 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, I want to do mine without welding
02:44 PM rue_mohr: (belt guard)
02:44 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Paint/Paint3.jpg
02:44 PM Tom_L: pretty :)
02:45 PM rue_mohr: yup, paint does a lot for a project
02:45 PM rue_mohr: its funny how much of a heap of junk that trike looked like till I painted it
02:45 PM Tom_L: haha yeah right?
02:45 PM Tom_L: the steel i used looked like crap when i got it
02:46 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Steel2.jpg
02:46 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/trike3/p1280837.jpg
02:46 PM rue_mohr: http://ruemohr.org/~ircjunk/projects/trike3/p1290136.jpg
02:46 PM Tom_L: it was good paint they used though
02:46 PM Tom_L: trike still working?
02:47 PM rue_mohr: I havnt' tried to move it :]
02:47 PM rue_mohr: I thnk there is a joint that needs a welder touchup
02:47 PM rue_mohr: and a flat tire, I have a new tube
02:48 PM rue_mohr: needs its electric motor!
02:48 PM Tom_L: i can only imagine if i had good tools to build, how the cnc would have come out
02:48 PM rue_mohr: yea, ditto if I had money
02:48 PM rue_mohr: I could have just bought those huge steppers
02:49 PM Tom_L: angle grinder and files
02:49 PM Tom_L: for the frame
02:49 PM rue_mohr: probably be done the whole thing
02:49 PM Tom_L: i'm surprised it's as accurate as it is
02:50 PM rue_mohr: I'm gonna be erally curious to see what I get out of this
02:50 PM Tom_L: not perfect by a long shot..
02:50 PM Tom_L: ok gotta go unload groceries
02:50 PM rue_mohr: maybe if I make the clamps from leaf spring
05:23 PM rue_mohr: ok I used some chunks of leaf spring and they seem to hold really well
05:23 PM rue_mohr: I can lightly jump on it and nothing slips in the clamps
05:24 PM rue_mohr: It all needs to be straightened but that and shiming can come later
05:24 PM rue_mohr: tramming it will be a lot of work
05:24 PM rue_mohr: - find motor for Y axis
05:24 PM rue_mohr: - mount Y axis gear box
05:24 PM rue_mohr: - mount Y axis idler
05:24 PM rue_mohr: - install belt clamp for Y axis
07:47 PM Tom_L: ok new washer & dryer
07:47 PM Tom_L: went industrial this time
07:48 PM Tom_L: tired of all the shit the box stores sell
07:53 PM aandrew: how old were the old ones?
07:54 PM aandrew: we are still using a chest freezer that my parents had before I was born, but the 6 year old dishwasher had to be replaced and the 6 year old range hood had to have its control board replaced twice, the last time with a PCB I made because I'd be fucked if I was gonna spend $500 on a control board that lasts a few years
07:56 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure the age of the last ones but it's the 3rd set since i replaced ones that had lasted me 25-30 yrs
07:57 PM Tom_L: these have a 5 yr parts & labor warranty
07:58 PM aandrew: crazy that consumer grade appliances don't have that
07:58 PM Tom_L: and i'd rebuilt the previous front loader & this one 2-3 times
07:59 PM Tom_L: i should have thought of this in the beginning but it really didn't cross my mind then
07:59 PM Tom_L: i believe in buy once and done
07:59 PM Tom_L: my mower is 35-40 yrs old
08:00 PM Tom_L: about to replace the bag finally
08:00 PM aandrew: I also believe in the same. I had a mower that was about 20y old and ran great
08:01 PM Tom_L: not briggs
08:01 PM Tom_L: although i recently looked for a replacement engine in case i ever need one and they're no longer available
08:01 PM Tom_L: kawasaki
08:05 PM aandrew: heh mine was a briggs engine. my snowblower is not but can't remember the name offhand. it's a poulan pro which is costco's label for husqvarna
08:06 PM aandrew: other than me popping a shear pin every few years, it's been 100% flawless. at least IME the single biggest thing you can do to keep the engine trouble free (besides oil changes) is at the end of hte season run the engine dry before storing it
08:07 PM aandrew: no buildup in the engine and no gas in the tank/lines means nothing to gum it up
08:24 PM Tom_L: right
08:24 PM Tom_L: i do the same with my backup gen
08:24 PM Tom_L: and once a year swap the tank of gas out
08:25 PM aandrew: same :-) I have a trifuel kit for it but haven't gotten around to installing it
08:26 PM aandrew: figure gas is easiest but the natgas hookup works for longer outages and if *their* pumps stop working then something's really very wrong
08:27 PM Tom_L: i went ~14 days once
08:29 PM aandrew: longest I had to use was under 24h but it was also a planned outage. normal outages are around 1-4h here
08:31 PM Tom_L: ice storm years ago
08:32 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/ice/12.jpg
08:32 PM Tom_L: lots of power lines down
08:32 PM Tom_L: that's all ice, not snow
08:40 PM rue_mohr: Tom_L, funny, just had that conversation in #cnc
08:42 PM rue_mohr: and the conclusion was that new front loading machine work just fine for ever
08:42 PM rue_mohr: I tried to sight your case and so many others
08:42 PM rue_mohr: nup, they wouldn't hear it
08:42 PM Tom_L: these weren't completely broke but the washer wouldn't spin right without faulting and i was getting very tired fo that
08:42 PM rue_mohr: must keep my old machines going!
08:43 PM Tom_L: so the washer is a top load industrial one this time
08:43 PM Tom_L: alot heavier for sure
08:43 PM rue_mohr: yea
08:43 PM Tom_L: they had these on the ship
08:44 PM rue_mohr: not in baltimore...
08:52 PM rue_mohr: well, I'm telling myself I got a lot done during my time out, but i'm not feeling it
08:52 PM rue_mohr: monday is going to be catchup hell
09:20 PM aandrew: yeah that's when I bought mine. our area came through it unscathed but next town over got hit harder
10:18 PM rue_mohr: ok had a bit of a rest
